If it's not too much trouble, could I ask about some anime you'd recommend? I have temporary access to Crunchyroll and I finished the thing I originally wanted to watch but I don't want to be "waste" the remaining time I have, and I remember a lot of times seeing you talk about an anime you were enjoying and going "when I can I should watch that", but now that I can I can't remember most of them outside of like, Bofuri and Bocchi the Rock.

Bocchi is so good, though!

EDIT: Shangri-La Frontier, which I originally didn’t mention because I just had a big post on it.

Spy X Family is really good, though there are episodes that are more slice of life than action (which isn’t a bad thing, I just know it catches some off-guard, and not everyone likes it). Also, there’s a lot of it with over 30 episodes.

The very high-production value Apothecary Diaries is fun mixed with some pretty heavy subject matters.

Frieren is good, though be prepared for emotional punches to the face.

Skip and Loafer is an exceptionally chill anime with very emotionally real characters. As much as I like it, though, I sometimes forget it exists (but am happy when I have that “oh yeah!” moment.

Campfire Cooking In Another World is a relaxing fun one, though a not-insignificant amount of run time is cooking and eating (it’s cute and chill, but still).

If looking for absolute absurdity, Nichijou is an option.

Life With An Ordinary Guy Who Reincarnated As A Total Fantasy Knockout starts a bit slow in episode one, but is hilarious by episode two.

Mob Psycho is a fascinating comedy anime.

The first season of My Next Life As A Villainess is one of my favorites, though that’s partly due to timing. I started reading the manga when I really, REALLY needed a pick-me-up, and the protagonist is basically one of my brain cells now.

History of Fanfics I Wrote (if memory serves)

Untitled Steven Universe x Ninja Sex Party story: The first one I wrote back in 2019, it was just me changing lyrics to a song and... it's plain bad. I got nothing but bad memories with it since it was posted the same day my aunt passed away. I'm glad it no longer exists.

Steven Universe x Hunter x Hunter story: I wrote this one as an AU of Steven Universe taking place in the world of HxH. It was my first series I wrote, lasted for about ten chapters. It was really bad. Many errors, terrible formatting, and shitting narration. I don't think anyone liked it.

Random SU stories: I'm convinced I wrote many stories about SU, but I guess I block those out of my head.

Self-Shipping stories: I made a series of stories of shipping myself with different characters. These were apparently prototypes of my creation of my OC, which I introduced him in 2022. I made three separate stories with three animated/anime girls. These were the ones were I vastly improved my writing. They're now a distance memory.

The End of the Crystal Gems: This was one of my most anticipated fanfic I ever wrote. It caught a lot of people's attention because of how dark and depressing it was. It was my magnum opus. However, it was released around the same time I ended an important friendship I had with someone. There was an attempt to rewrite it, but I lost interest with Steven Universe. The story is forever gone, but I was very proud of it.

Numerous Madosaya stories: After watching Madoka Magica, I gave fanfic another shot and, it was amazing again. I wrote so many cute stories about Madoka and Sayaka fallen in love with each other. I'm really happy of what I came up with.

Sayaka's Universe: My current story about my OC, Harry Universe, becoming friends with Sayaka Miki. So far, I got good responses with it, and I plan to continue with it soon.

My True Love: This was a Madosaya turn Poly Quintet story. It was supposed to be a three to four chapter story, but because it was popular, I expanded to eleven chapters. I need to come out, I plagiarize other works in order to write it. I am deeply ashamed about it, and I don't plan on resurrecting it.

Kyosaya Shenanigans: Short stories about Sayaka and Kyoko reenacting moments from the Youtube Let's Play series, Game Grumps. So far, people love it. There's more coming soon.

A Hug Can Cure Loneliness: My first Bocchi the Rock! story. It's actually getting a lot of attention over on AO3, I was not excepting that.

I don't really read novels because I'm a pretty slow reader, and also reading is pretty taxing for me (I am probably dyslexic, both my parents and my sister are, but I've never been tested), so novels aren't exactly a good leisure activity. I have read one novel that I enjoyed though, Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe. I liked the straightforward, realist prose style, and found the image that Achebe painted of pre-colonial Igboland very compelling. On the opposite end of the spectrum, I like HP Lovecraft a lot, which is nominally horror but I've never found his stories scary in the slightest. I just like the imagery.

I actually think this is the main commonality in the prose that I like—I enjoy imagery more than action, and both Lovecraft and Achebe set a scene very well, I think.

I don't consume a lot of fiction in general. I think I like fiction noticeably less than the average person, and way less than the average tumblr user.

Among TV shows that I have liked: The X-Files, Spice and Wolf, Gilmore Girls, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Foyle's War, Bocchi the Rock. If you can find any essential commonality between these, please do let me know what it is.

I do think my taste in art/media/fiction has a certain coherency to it, but it's hard to put into words. For the most part I don't really like bombast or high drama. I don't know exactly.

Frieren: Beyond Journey's End is a Modern Classic By Savio Shi

Anime is now more popular than ever, with many titles such as My Hero Academia, SPY X FAMILY, Bocchi The Rock and Jujutsu Kaisen garnering mainstream attention. However, for every Death Note there’s a “I’m a Loser Who Does Nothing But Play Video Games All Day and Now I’m Reincarnated As a Super Powerful Half-Demon Half-Angel With The Power To Destroy The Universe With Only a Fart” (This is a parody of many trashy self-insert, wish-fulfilment “Isekai” animes where the protagonist gets transported to another world and becomes ridiculously overpowered and is surrounded with attractive women who fall head over heels for the protagonist despite his lack of any positive personality traits. And yes they really do have titles like this.) While there’s no shortage of good anime, great anime can be hard to come by. Friern: Beyond Journey’s End is one of them. 

Frieren has one of the most memorable opening episodes of any shows I’ve watched, period. It begins with the end of the journey, after Frieren and her party of heroes successfully defeated the demon king. Here we’re introduced to a lovable cast of characters, including Eisen the steadfast and stoic Warrior dwarf, Heiter the alcoholic human priest, and Himmel the human Hero, the leader of the party. Frieren is a cold and detached elven mage, and the protagonist of the series. As an elf, her lifespan is extremely long, which has caused her to perceive time much more differently than her peers. After Himmel’s party is celebrated for their monumental achievement, they part ways, each having new goals and aspirations. Many years later, Frieren revisits her old friends only to find that they’ve all grown old. Her friends have all missed her greatly, but Himmel in particular had missed her the most. Himmel had always paid special attention to Frieren, and the two shared a special bond, though it was a somewhat one-sided one. After the four went out to see the shooting stars one last time, Himmel the hero passed away. 

It was only at his funeral that Frieren suddenly realised that she hadn’t treasured her time together with Himmel. Tears fall from her face as she regrets not getting to know him better when she had the chance. It was an extremely profound and emotional moment that moved me as well. This prompted Frieren to change her perspective on life. She begins to realise that her near immortality has caused her not to value her often short-lived connections with humans, and so she embarks on a new journey, making new friends while reminiscing on her past friends, keeping them alive in her memory and carrying them onto the future. 

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End is about a lot of things. But its most powerful theme is that ultimately, we are the culmination of the people in our lives. This resonated with me deeply, as I’ve been fortunate enough to have made many meaningful connections with people from all ages and backgrounds. Some helped me understand myself better, some taught me things I never would’ve known, and some stood by my side in times of need. I may not be as long-lived as Frieren, but in my short 20 years I feel as though I’ve already made a lifetime of wonderful connections. Some of those connections will last longer than others, but just as Frieren realised, it is not the amount of time spent together that matters. If you treasure the time spent together, it will stay with you for a lifetime. I am Savio, but I’m also a collage of all the people who’ve been kind enough to let me be a part of their lives, and words cannot express how grateful I am for everyone who has made me the person I am today, but I’ll still give it a shot: Thank you.
