Day 28 Prompt: "I may not get another chance to say this."

Summary: The scene where Matt jumps into the pool for a near-death experience, but with his SO instead of Bonnie.

I was busy digging through a school supply closet in the middle of the night when my phone rang. I jumped at the noise, adrenaline pumping at having snuck into the high school in the dead of night with my friends. It was for senior prank night, so it's not like we would get in terrible trouble if we got caught, but still.

I ditched the rolls of toilet paper I'd been gathering to spread all over the school and grabbed my phone to see my boyfriend, Matt Donovan, staring back at me from the caller ID. I quickly answered.

"Matt, good news, I found the tp jackpot."

"Y/N... you remember the summer we met, working as life guards together at the town pool?"

I furrowed my brow, scooping a few rolls of toilet paper into my free hand as I responded.

"Yeah..."

"And you remember the hours we spent in classes getting CPR certified?"

"Unfortunately, yeah."

"Well... I'm gonna need you to put it to good use. I'm at the pool. I know this is gonna sound crazy, but... I think Vicki is trying to talk to me."

"What? Matt, what the hell are you talking about?"

I dropped the rolls of toilet paper and shut the closet door, then started heading for the pool.

"Jeremy told me he's been able to see ghosts since Bonnie brought him back from the dead," he said. I sped up, panic setting in a little at the tone in his voice.

"Matt, I'm not magic. And Bonnie barely managed to bring Jeremy back-"

"You don't need magic for CPR. I know you'll save me."

"Matthew Grant Donovan, don't you dare-"

"I'm sorry, Y/N, but I have to do this. If Vicki needs my help... I can't leave her. I trust you to save me."

"Matt, you're being insane!" I'd started running for the pool now, still not totally sure what Matt was thinking but definitely sure it wasn't good.

"I trust you to save me," he repeated. "But listen... just in case... I may not get another chance to say this, so... I love you. A lot. And after everybody I've lost, I can't tell you how happy I am to have you in my life."

"Whatever the hell you're thinking of doing, Donovan, don't-"

The call ended. I swore and shoved my phone into my pocket before doubling my pace. I slammed through the doors to the school's pool a few moments later and found Matt's shoes and keys at the pool's edge. I looked into the pool and found a shape floating near the bottom. Matt.

The kind of calm that only comes in a crisis washed over me, and I chucked off every layer of clothing I could easily lose before diving into the pool, using my momentum to reach Matt faster at the bottom. He'd strapped a weight around his stomach, the dumbass, and I quickly unfastened it before wrapping my arms around his waist and pushing upwards, shoving both feet off the bottom of the pool. Matt was heavy, but we rose quickly, and the urgency of the situation gave me the little extra strength I needed to heave him over the edge of the pool and onto dry land.

I took deep breaths as I leapt out of the pool, turning Matt over and checking for a pulse. I breathed a half sigh of relief when I found one, weak and thready though it was. I leaned over to check if he was breathing next, and found he wasn't. I didn't waste a second before calmly tipping Matt's head back, pinching his nose, and giving him two rescue breaths. I watched carefully to see his chest rise with my breath, then leaned back for a moment before doing another round.

I kept going, that emergency calm just starting to fray when Matt jerked awake, sitting up straight and looking at me wildly. He'd almost headbutted me right in the face he'd moved so fast and so suddenly, but thankfully I managed to rock back on my heels before he could make contact. We both sat still for a few moments, staring at each other with wide eyes while the adrenaline rushed through us, and then I punched Matt in the arm, hard.

"Ow! What the hell?" he cried, rubbing at his arm. He was dripping wet and still struggling to catch his breath a little, but the wave of calm had completely receded, and it had been replaced by pure anger.

"That's my line!" I screamed, smacking Matt a few more times, albeit with less force. "What the hell were you thinking? How could you do that to me? Do you know how horrifying it was to come in here and see you at the bottom of that pool? To think I might lose you? That I might fail, and you would die?"

"I'm sorry-"

"Not good enough! I get that Vicki is important to you, and you're still dealing with her death, but-"

"I saw her! I saw her, Y/N. She gave me a message for Bonnie."

I sighed heavily and closed my eyes, trying to get better control of my temper before I spoke again. After a second, I met Matt's wide blue eyes.

"Matt, you should've gone to Bonnie first. Or Jeremy. Or done literally any of about a thousand things before you tried to drown yourself, leaving me with a phone call and nightmares for the rest of my life about your dead body."

He looked down, guilty, shaking his head a little. I just sighed, sinking down onto the pool floor to sit next to him. We stayed like that for a few long moments, shoulder to shoulder and both of us processing. Finally, Matt looked at me again, distress written on every inch of his face.

"I'm sorry, Y/N. And I know that's not nearly enough for what I did, but... I hope it's at least a start. Everything that happened with Vicki... I think about it every day. I think about her every day. And I got so wrapped up in the chance at seeing her again that I didn't even think about putting you in the same position. I know it's too late to take back what I did but... I swear, I'll never do anything like that to you again."

I sighed, flopping my head onto Matt's shoulder. He wrapped his arm around me, and although we were both soaking wet and I'd started to get a little chilled, it didn't seem important right now.

"Never again, Matt? You swear?"

"I swear. On everything that's ever been important to me, I swear."

I nodded, still not picking my head up from his shoulder.

"Then okay. I can forgive you, and we can get through this. But seriously Matt, talk to me first next time. And then we'll talk to everyone else, and then we'll figure out a better plan than the one you just came up with."

"Deal."

"Good. Now let's get out of here and change into some dry clothes. Then we can find Bonnie and do whatever we can to help your sister."

Matt and I stood together, leaning on each other as we headed out of the room. No matter how many stupid plans he came up with, it didn't change the face that I loved him. We'd find a way to figure things out, no matter how weird Mystic Falls got.

Although, if I said I wasn't looking forward to leaving this town after graduating at the end of the year... I'd definitely be lying. Hopefully with a few more disasters like this, I'd be able to convince Matt it was worth it to leave too.

What The Hell, Jay?

First of all, this is my first time writing a fanfic ever, so it may be shitty. Also, my first language isn’t english so, hope I didn’t make too many errors.

Backstory: Jay-Lee Bennett had just turned 18. Her life in Mystic Falls hadn’t been easy. Her sister Bonnie, died last year. Leaving her, alone with no one to talk to, except Damon. The girl wasn’t just a rebellious punkette, but also a Bennett Witch. The dark haired girl, struggling with her mental health and her powers. Met the Salvatores brothers when she was at her lowest. Being a friend of the late Vicki, Jay-Lee knew all about the town’s vampires.

Today, was the year anniversary of Bon’s death. A full year without my sister, and 1 and a half without my best friend Vicks..

I was thinking about everything that was happening in this town since Bonnie died. She would’ve hated it I chuckled lowly to myself before wiping a runaway tear and sitting down in front of her grave.

I sighed, and lit my joint before putting a red rose on her grave.

-Hey Bones, what’s up? I guess you don’t have a lot on your plate uh? Listen, its hard, without you and Vicki here. We got problems with the tomb vampires, you know.. The reason you fucking died on me?

*A tear made its way down my cheek, while I inhaled a little puff*

-I miss you so so much.. Its hard being the strong girl who have no shits to give. I don’t know if I can keep it up any longer..You usually made it easier for me..I love you Bones, see you soon.

I got up, and left the cemetery, finally putting out my joint.

The morning after, I got to school late, again. Mrs. Halpern shooting me a glare as she probably realized I was high again. I sat in my seat, ignoring the usual pity stares I got form Elena and Stefan, and for a full hour, acted as if I cared about Trigonometry. When the bell rang, I quickly went outside to self-medicate. Tyler-fucking-Lockwood bumping me in the process.

-Hey Junkie! Watch where you walk, we wouldn’t want you to get hurt, uh?

He called out. And before I could control myself my powers flaired up and his hair caught on fire.

It didn’t take two seconds before Stefan called out my name again.

So, I left. I didn’t need his morals. I hated myself enough like this.

Walking to the old church, where me and Vicki used to meet, I took a hit on my medicine. It wasn’t the first time that my powers flaired up, Tyler had been lucky that he survived, the last time it happened, the disgusting bastard gropping me wasn’t this lucky.. Elena and both the Salvatores were scared of me, and I knew it. But its not like I could do something about it, trust me, I tried.

As I sat there, thinking about my existence. Something hit me, and I trashed around before finally blacking out.

I woke up, and I was in a cage. But what hurt more, was that I recognized the Boarding House. I tried to hear if someone was here, but I couldn’t hear anything. I knew Elena, Stefan and Damon were behind this. I felt betrayed.

Using my powers to escape, I sat on the couch. Waiting for someone to come. And as expected, Damon walked in.

-Oh, you’re out. (Damon called out.)

I glared in response

-The cage was uh, not my idea obviously. But uh it was for uh.. (He stuttered slightly)

-In case my powers flaired up again? In case it became too dangerous?!

-YEAH YOU’RE DANGEROUS JAY! YOU CAN’T FUCKING CONTROL YOURSELF! (He screamed at me). Listen, last time you killed a man, now you lit that Lockwood punk on fire, and as much as I agree that he’s an idiot you can’t do that!! So that’s why we made the cage Jay, just in case..

-In case you had to kill me? But you can’t! And I know because I fucking tried Damon!! (I shouted, getting up from the couch)

His eyes grew dark and the silence grew louder

- Come again? I don’t think I got that right (He fake laughed.)

-I’ll say this once, you.can’t.kill.me.

-No, I got that Jay, what did you say after? (He took a step towards me, head tilted to the side menacingly)

-That I tried? That I wanted to kill myself but failed? Is that what you long to hear Damon?! (My eyes watered while his throat got dry)

He sped towards me and pushed me to the wall by my throat.

-What the fuck Jay-Lee Bennett? Do you really fucking think we would get rid of you? And when did you think that it was okay for you to fucking die on me huh? (He snarled at me)

-Oh come on Damon, no one cares. Stefan and Elena would prefer to have me far, far away from here, ´cause I’m just the crazy junkie who can’t control herself. (I grew quieter)

-Maybe they do, but I don’t Jay, I know you, I care for you.

He softly put my hair behind my ear, grazing my cheek.

-Dam, I can’t do it anymore. (I said, sobbing on his chest)

-The cage was just here so we could have you calm yourself down safely without hurting us or yourself, I would never hurt you. I see you. Behind this strong act you put on. I see you. And.. I l-like you Jay…

I have named the reader but there is few physical descriptors besides being AFAB. Feel free to imagine her however you would like!

Summary: Cori Douglas has lived a somewhat quiet life in mystic falls. Despite a few slip ups, she has managed to fly under the radar with her best friends. That is, until her junior year when two new mysterious men roll into town and shake everyone up, including her best friend Elena. What will Cori find out about these mysterious men and about herself? Mostly follows the storyline of tvd show but may take some creative liberties.

When Cordelia Douglas thought about the first week of her Junior year, she did not think of the events that occurred over the last seven days in Mystic Falls. She knew it would not be a normal week–one of her best friends, Elena Gilbert, had experienced the death of her parents over the summer and Cordelia knew that it was going to be hard for her to go back to school and be in front of prying eyes. It was also going to be her first year of school where her sister wouldn’t be in the same building as her, having graduated the year before and moved away to college. But, while these things were abnormal in terms of Cordelia’s everyday life, they could not have prepared her in any way for the events that were going to unfold. 

Not only had a couple been brutally killed at the beginning of the week, seemingly being attacked by a wild animal, but a new guy had rolled into town with a mysterious vibe and attached himself to Elena. On top of that, her other best friend, Bonnie, was insisting that she was some kind of psychic and was weirdly convincing of the fact. As a cherry on top of a weird week, Vicki Donovan had been attacked within inches of her life at the annual back-to-school party at The Falls. Apparently, it was another animal attack, but…something felt weird about it to Cordelia. 

“Cori, are you even listening?” Snapping out of her intense staring contest with her glass of water, Cordelia looks up at her two friends who she is currently sitting with at The Grill. After the incident with Vicki, Cori, Bonnie, and the other member of their little group, Caroline had all headed to The Grill so Caroline had a chance to sober up before Cori dropped her and Bonnie off at their houses. Caroline’s mom was the sheriff and Cori had no interest in returning her daughter back home when she was still slurring her words. 

Cori had admittedly not been listening for the last few minutes, zoning out and thinking about the events of the last few days. “Sorry,” she shakes her thoughts away and looks at Caroline, “I was just…thinking about Vicki.” It wasn’t a lie. She leans forward and pushes Caroline’s water closer to her, “Hydrate. It’s late and I need you to walk in a straight line and say the alphabet backward before I drop you off at home.” 

The blonde whines, her eyes still unfocused like they had been when they left the party, “Why didn’t he go for me? You know, why do the guys I want never want me?” Oh, right, that’s what they were talking about. Caroline had become infatuated with the new guy, Stefan, who had rejected her quite bluntly at the party before spending the rest of the time following Elena around. It was pretty clear he had chosen the object of his desires. 

Cori looks at Bonnie and they share a look as if to say ‘You wanna take this one?’. “I’m not touching that.” Bonnie holds up her hands and Cori sighs, prepared to console Caroline but her friend keeps talking on her own. 

“I’m inappropriate. I always say the wrong thing and…Elena always says the right thing.” Caroline looks downright defeated, her shoulders slumped and her eyes sad, “She doesn’t even try! And he just picks her. And she’s always the one that everyone picks, for everything…I try so hard but…I’m never the one.” 

“It’s not a competition, Caroline,” Bonnie tells her, attempting to shut down her concerns. Cori looks between her two friends as she sips her water. She knew where Caroline was coming from even if she may have sounded selfish and superficial to someone else. Cori had been compared to and pitted against her older sister her entire life and had always come second. When she became friends with Elena, the same thing started to happen. It was obvious that Bonnie and Elena were closer out of the group and even though that left Caroline and Cori, Caroline always had other friends from the cheer team or student council that she hung out with when the group wasn’t available. Cori, on the other hand, had acquaintances from classes and the swim team but no one that she would hang out with outside of those activities. She typically just waited around until one of the three girls called her to hang out and she naturally was the last choice but she didn’t really care, she loved them all and she would do anything for them. 

“Yeah, it is,” Caroline argues back, making Bonnie roll her eyes. 

Cori reaches across the table and squeezes Caroline’s hand, “Caroline, you’re beautiful, smart, and funny. You’re a great friend and you’re going to make a very good partner to someone who really appreciates you.” She smiles, holding eye contact with Caroline for as long as she can before the blue eyes of her friend dart to something behind her shoulder. Cori turns to look over her shoulder to see what Caroline is looking at. The man sitting across the restaurant is not familiar to Cori but his presence sense a chill through her whole body. He has dark hair, icy blue eyes, and sharp features. Dawned in a black leather jacket and his fingers wrapped around a glass of bourbon, the bad boy essence is practically seeping out of his pores. He smiles at Caroline and raises his glass to her with a flirty wink. 

Cori looks back at Caroline who is shamelessly blushing and waving back at the man. Cori sighs, standing up from the table and grabbing her purse, “Alright, I think you’re sober enough,” She says, grateful that Bonnie follows her cue and stands up from the table as well, “Let’s get you two home.” 

“But, Cor–” 

“Now, Caroline.” Cori snaps, showing she means business by collecting her friend’s purse and jacket herself. Despite her whines and mumbled objections, Caroline stands up from the table and takes Bonnie’s hand as they make their way out of the establishment. Cori trailed behind her friends as they walked by the older man who was watching them, fully intending on just walking straight onward to her car with them if it wasn’t for what he muttered as she walked past. 

“Buzzkill,” he coughs, trying to hide that he was speaking to her. 

She stops so hard that her sneakers squeak against the floor. She makes sure there’s enough distance between her and her friends so that they won’t notice her stopping to talk to him before she spins on her heel and places her hands firmly on the table in front of him, her gaze sharp, “I have no clue who you are and I frankly don’t care because any guy sitting alone and drinking in public while staring at high school girls must be a freak, but let me tell you how this is going to go–” If he was taken back by her tone with him he didn’t show it since the only thing that manifested was a slightly amused smirk on his lips, “We’re going to leave and you’re not going to follow us. If you ever see either of my friends again you won’t so much as breathe in their direction unless you want me to cut your balls off with a dull, rusty, butter knife.” She pinches her fingers together to emphasize her point. “Clear?” She raises an eyebrow, not even waiting for him to answer her before she turns away from him and walks after her friends before they notice she isn’t behind them. 

Damon watches the girl walk away, slightly stunned at her boldness but more amused by it. Mystic Falls may look different these days but it sure as hell never failed to surprise him.

Luckily, the mystery man from the grill hadn’t made himself seen since then so he was either just passing through town or was smart enough to make himself scarce. Things in Cori’s life continued on normally after that strange first week of school and she found herself falling into her routine easily. Elena and Stefan had been getting closer and, despite a little hiccup when Elena met Stefan’s brother that he had failed to mention, things seemed to be going well. Much to the displeasure of Bonnie who was now voicing this displeasure to Elena as the three girls walked outside of school and Elena told them all about her epic kiss with the new boy in her life. 

“Look, I’m not saying don’t date the guy,” Bonnie expresses, “I’m just saying take it slow.” She was cautious of Stefan and ever since the other day when he hung out with them at The Grill on the Night of the Comet, her worries seemed to have increased. 

“You were the one who said go for it.” Elena reminds her friend, confused about her feelings. 

“And now I’m saying take it slow.” Bonnie was obviously trying to say something without actually saying it and both Elena and Cori could tell. 

“Why the about-face?” Elena questions. 

“It’s not an about-face,” Bonnie defends, “You’re single for the first time in your high school career, it’s the perfect time to play the field.” 

Cori chuckles a little bit, “Because Elena is so that girl,” she says sarcastically, “and, I don’t know what field you’re in, Bonnie, but the one I’m playing in is super boring.” All this wasn’t to say that Cori didn’t have her own suspicions about Stefan, but she could tell that Elena was happy hanging out with him. At the most, she could just be there for Elena and keep an eye on Stefan as things progressed. 

Elena laughs at Cori and looks back at her skeptical friend, “Seriously, Bon, what aren’t you saying?” 

“It’s stupid.” Bonnie shakes her head, suddenly seeming very shy. 

Cori sighs, pulling the girls to a stop, “Spit it out, Bennett.” She insists, crossing her arms over her chest. 

While she still seemed hesitant, Bonnie looked around the front lawn of the school before saying in a low voice, “I accidentally touched Stefan, and I got a really bad feeling.” Ever since Bonnie’s grams had mentioned something about their family being descended from Salem Witches just before school started, things like this had been coming up a lot. And, look, Cori would be the first person to jump in and support her friend’s endeavors but being a psychic witch? Well…that was kind of hard to get behind. 

“That’s it?” Elena raises an eyebrow, “Bonnie…” 

“It was bad bad!” 

“Is this the whole witch mojo thing again?” 

Cori cuts in before the swinging between the two girls becomes too much, “Okay, Elena, you know Bonnie is just concerned, and she’s always had good instincts.” She says, “Remember that one time in freshman year when she told me cutting my own hair into a bob would look really bad and take forever to grow back? She was right!” Cori had looked like Lord Farquad for almost a year after that, “We all just want you to be careful and we don’t want to see you get hurt.” She turns to Bonnie, “Right, Bonnie?” 

Bonnie nods, “I’m just concerned. This is me showing concern about my best friend’s new boyfriend.” 

Elena sighs, touching both of them on the arm, “And I love you for it. Both of you.” She says, her eyes looking brighter than they have in months, “But I feel good. It’s been a hard year, and I’m starting to feel like things are getting back to normal again. And you know what? Stefan is a big part of that.” Cori glances at Bonnie, trying to see if Elena’s words eased her worries at all but it was almost impossible for her to tell and their conversation was interrupted by someone walking up to them. 

“Good morning, Elena,” Stefan greets, smiling at the girls, “Good morning, Bonnie. Cori.” 

“Hey, um, I gotta find Caroline. She’s not answering her phone. I’ll see you guys later.” Bonnie rushes out the excuse and parts quickly, leaving an awkward air behind and leaving Cori to third wheel the new couple. 

Elena tried to call after her but it was fruitless. Cori winces slightly as she turns to Stefan, “She doesn’t like me very much.” 

“She…just doesn’t know you,” Elena assures him and Cori nods along. “She’s my best friend, she’s just looking out for me. But, when she does, she will love you.” she turns to her one remaining friend, looking for help, “Right, Cori?” 

Cori splutters but nods quickly, “Yes! We’re all very protective of Elena, and Bonnie is the fiercest protector,” she chuckles nervously, “she just needs time to warm up to you.” She wasn’t quite sure how she ended up in the middle of this situation but that tended to happen to her a lot. “I should probably get going,” she says and notices the confused look from Stefan and the wide-eyed one from Elena, “Not because I don’t like you!” She says quickly and holds up the brown sack in her hands, “My dad–he’s the art teacher here–he forgot his lunch this morning and I promised to bring it to him.” She promises. 

“Don’t worry,” Stefan smiles at her, “I won’t take it personally.” 

“Tell your dad I said hey.” Elena requests as Cori gives them a small wave and makes her exit. 

Cori’s dad, Hayden, was the art teacher at Mystic Falls High School. He had been an aspiring artist up until her mom told him she was pregnant with her older sister and he realized he would have to get a more stable job. At the time, Cori’s mom was in her last year of law school and they were already barely scraping by so he knew he had to do something in order for her mom to not have to give up her dreams, so, he gave up his. And now he and Cori’s mom were divorced and her mom lived in D.C. and worked as some high-profile attorney for politicians who got themselves into messes and her dad was still here, teaching high school art. But, he never complained once. He seemed to really love his job and he was happy to stay in Mystic Falls with Cori. 

She knocks on the door frame of her dad’s classroom, getting his attention away from the table where he was setting up the supplies for that day, ‘Delivery.” She announces, holding up his lunch. 

He sighs thankfully, “Oh, what would I do without you?” He asks. 

“Starve.” Cori shrugs simply, accepting a kiss on the forehead from him as he takes the lunch from her. “I need to get to class but I wanted to tell you that I’m going straight to Elena’s after swim practice this afternoon,” Cori hadn’t walked away from Elena and Stefan for more than 30 seconds before she had a text from Elena telling her–not asking, telling–that they were all going to have dinner at her house tonight so that Bonnie and her could get to know Stefan. Cori had chuckled and responded with a quick, “Fine, I’ll be there, but I’m cooking because I won’t make us all suffer through one of your meals.” Growing up with just her dad and sister led to Cori taking on the majority of the cooking responsibilities and she had developed quite the skill from it. “She’s making Bonnie and I bond with her new boyfriend so that we don’t protest their relationship.” 

Hayden chuckles at his daughter, setting his lunch down on his desk, “More so Bonnie than you, I’m sure. She’s more intimidating.” 

Cori scoffs, crossing her arms over her chest, “I resent that. I can be very intimidating.” She argues. If only he had seen her telling off that guy at The Grill the other night, she really showed him. “I just don’t mind Stefan…yet.” 

“He’s the new kid, right? Stefan….” He scans over the list of students he has sitting on his desk, “Salvatore?” 

Cori nods, “Yup, that’s him.” 

“He seems nice enough. Zero artistic abilities, but he tries.” 

She frowns at her dad, “Yeah, I’ll be sure to tell him that later.” she jokes, offering her dad  a smile as she makes to head to class, “I’ll see you later, make sure not to forget your head when you leave for home.” 

“Very funny!” He calls after her.

It was around 8 pm and Cori was in Gilbert’s kitchen preparing dinner while Elena and Bonnie pretended to help but really just talked and kept her company. “You explain it.” Bonnie was once again on the topic of her psychic happenings, “Last night, I’m watching 90210, a commercial break comes on and I’m like, I bet it’s that phone commercial,” Elena and Cori share a look before the latter goes back to cutting vegetables for the salad, “And sure enough, it’s that guy and the girl with the bench, he flies to Paris and he flies back. They take a picture.” 

“Oh, come on.” Elena looks at Bonnie, “That commercial’s on a constant loop, I think I literally heard Cori quoting it in her sleep when she slept over a couple of weeks ago.”

Cori laughs lowly, “They should really be paying me for that.” 

“Fine. Well, how about this?” Bonnie moves on, “Today I’m obsessed with numbers. 3 numbers. I keep seeing 8, 14, and 22. How weird is that?” 

Cori gasps, pointing the knife in her hand at Bonnie, “You should play the lottery!” 

Elena reached over and slowly lowered Cori’s arm, worried for everyone’s safety. Just because she was good at cooking, didn’t mean she wasn’t still accident-prone. If they could keep her away from sharp objects, they would. “Have you talked to your Grams?” 

Bonnie sighs, seeming defeated by her friend’s reactions, “She’s just gonna say it’s because I’m a witch. I don't wanna be a witch.” she whines, “Do you wanna be a witch?” 

Elena shakes her head, her eyes wide, “I do not wanna be a witch.” 

“I kinda wanna be a witch,” Cori says, dumping the cucumbers into the salad, “I could, like, learn spells to keep my hair from ever getting frizzy,” she smiles excitedly, “Or, I could enchant all of Tyler Lockwood’s shoes to be left-footed. Not harmful but really damn inconvenient.” Elena and Bonnie share a laugh at their friend who is still completely serious, “Hey, do you think you could talk to your grams and see if magic is, like, transferable so if you don’t want it you could give it to me?” 

Bonnie opens her mouth to answer but is cut off by the doorbell ringing, the tension in the kitchen is suddenly palpable, “Ok, he’s here,” Elena moves to leave the kitchen, “Don’t be nervous. Just be your normal, loving self.” Bonnie rolls her eyes as her friend heads to answer the front door. Cori watches her as she slowly steps away from the island in the middle of the kitchen and makes her way over to one of the drawers, placing her hand on the handle. 

“Birthday candles.” She whispers under her breath before opening the drawer and finding, you guessed it, birthday candles. Bonnie turns and looks at Cori with a big smile on her face as if to say ‘See?’ 

Cori raises an eyebrow at her, “Bon, you’ve been in this kitchen a thousand times,” She reminds her, “It’s going to take more than that to convince me.” 

Dinner was going smoothly so far, if anything it was just slightly awkward. All four of them sat in the Gilbert dining room, digging into the pasta dish Cori had prepared. They talked about how Stefan had managed to get on the football team today despite the hazing from Mr. Tanner. His first game was on Friday. Now, Elena was shifting them to talk more about Bonnie and her family. 

“Um, divorced. No mom. Live with my dad.” Bonnie explains flatly, obviously not catching what Elena was trying to throw at her. 

“No,” Elena sighs, “About the witches.” she turns to Stefan, “Bonnie’s family has a lineage of witches. It’s really cool.” 

“Cool isn’t the word I’d use.” Cori looks down at her plate, awkwardly pushing her food around. 

“Well, it’s certainly interesting. I’m not too versed, but I do know that there’s a history of Celtic druids that migrated here in the 1800s.” Stefan was surprising her. He wasn’t going to give up without a fight and it looked like it would be a cold day in hell before he gave up on winning Bonnie over. 

“My family came by way of Salem,” Bonnie explains. 

“Really? Salem witches?” 

“Yeah.” 

“I would say that’s pretty cool.” 

Bonnie seems surprised by that response, tilting her head at him in curiosity, “Really? Why?” 

“Salem witches are heroic examples of individualism and nonconformity,” Stefan tells her, obviously spiking a positive chord with Bonnie. 

Cori shoves her friend’s shoulder playfully, “See? I told you it would be cool. I’m telling you if you don’t want this magic stuff I’ll take it off your hands.” Just as the tension seems to be lifting slowly from the room, the doorbell rings. 

“I wonder who that could be.” Elena frowns, moving to get up but Cori stops her. 

“No, I’ll get it, you guys keep chatting.” She could tell that this dinner wasn’t exactly for her benefit as it was for Bonnie’s. She didn’t mind, she liked being involved in the forcing Bonnie and Stefan to be friends plot. When she opens the front door, her eyes land on Caroline and the smile that appears on her lips vanishes as soon as it comes when she sees who is standing behind her excited friend. 

The mystery man from The Grill, with his smirking face and his bright blue eyes, was standing right behind Caroline on the porch, looking quite proud of himself right about now. That is until he realizes where he recognized Cori from and his eyes promptly roll back in his head, not realizing he’d be enduring the sassy back talk of the stranger this evening. “Surprise!” Caroline cheers, “Bonnie said you were having dinner, so we brought dessert.” 

“Caroline….” Cori says slowly, reaching forward and grabbing her friend's arm, slowly pulling her through the doorway. Her companion doesn’t follow but remains just past the threshold, “Who is this?” 

“Oh, where are my manners!” Caroline laughs, seemingly not having a care in the world, “Cori, this is Damon Salvatore, Stefan’s older brother.” Oh dear God, “Damon, this is Cordelia Douglas, another one of my best friends.” The blonde is squeezing her shoulders lovingly but Cori is standing there as stiff as a board as she glares daggers at Damon. 

“Pleasure to meet you, Cordelia.” He thrusts his hand forward for her to shake but she’s frozen and can’t make herself pretend to be civil.

Caroline giggles, “Oh Damon, so formal, everyone just calls her Cori.” 

“He can call me Cordelia.” Finally, words find her and Cori speaks up, “Cori is reserved for…” she looks Damon up and down, “Friends.” 

“He is a friend, silly,” Caroline giggles, swatting her shoulder playfully. 

“Yeah, I’m a friend.” Damon’s smirk only widens and before Cori can wreak havoc on the little shit, everyone from the dining room walks in on them. 

“Oh…” Elena trails off, her eyes flitting back and forth between Caroline and Damon who was still standing out on the porch. 

“We brought dessert!” Caroline tells the other three guests. 

“Hope you don’t mind.” Damon smiles at Elena. 

“What are you doing here?” Stefan demands of his brother who seems just as displeased by Damon’s presence as Cori is who was now standing slightly in front of Caroline as if protecting her from the man on the porch. 

“Waiting for Elena to invite me in.” 

“Oh, yeah, you can…” 

“No,” Stefan cuts Elena off quickly, earning weird glances from everyone except Cori who was still glaring daggers at Damon. “He can’t uh…he can’t stay. Can you, Damon?”

Elena frowns at him, not sure what he is talking about, “it’s fine,” she says firmly, and much to the dismay of a few of the individuals in the room she opens her mouth and says to Damon, “Come on in.”

Expected to engage in a somewhat normal conversation, Cori sat in the living room with everyone, eating the dessert that Caroline and Damon had brought but she wasn’t really eating it, just pushing it around on her plate as she observed the conversation from her spot on the floor. Caroline was currently sitting on the arm of the chair that Damon was occupying which made Cori seeth but she tried to keep it together so that Elena could accomplish what she wanted from the night. 

“I cannot believe that Mr. Tanner let you on the team. Tyler must be seething.” Caroline remarks, “But good for you,” She says to Stefan, “Go for it.” 

“That’s what I always tell him,” Damon pipes in, ever the wise older brother. “You have to engage. You can’t just sit there and wait for life to come to you. You have to go get it.” Based on Stefan’s look toward Damon, it was obvious he didn’t appreciate the advice. 

“Yeah, Elena wasn’t so lucky today.” Caroline says sympathetically, looking at Elena, “It’s only because you missed the summer camp.” she sighs, “God, I don’t know how you’re ever going to catch up.” 

Sometimes Caroline was the least self-aware person Cori had ever met, “I’ll work with her. She’ll get it.” Cori was the only one of her friends not on the cheer team and for that she was grateful. 

“I guess we could put her in the back,” Caroline says thoughtfully. 

“You know,” God, there was his voice again, “You don’t seem like the cheerleader type, Elena.” 

Before Elena can speak up for herself, Caroline opens her mouth again, “Oh, it’s just because her parents died.” Cori all but starts banging her head against the coffee table in front of her, “I mean, she’s just totally going through a blah phase. She used to be way more fun.” The blonde holds out her hand to Elena and adds quickly, “I say with complete sensitivity.” 

If Elena was seriously affected by Caroline’s comment she didn’t show it, simply chalking it up to Caroline being Caroline. “I’m sorry, Elena.” Damon says, almost sounding genuine, “I know what it’s like to lose both your parents.” He says, leaning forward in the chair slightly, “In fact, Stefan and I have watched almost every single person we’ve ever cared about die.” 

Yikes, Cori thinks to herself, looking down at her untouched dessert, “We don’t need to get into that right now, Damon.” Stefan says to his brother. 

“Oh, you know what, you’re right,  Stef. I’m sorry,” this apology seemed the furthest thing from genuine, “The last thing I wanted to do was bring her up.” Cori turns to Elena and raises a questioning eyebrow, mouthing ‘Her?’ Elena shrugs back and flutters a hand at her as if to say she’ll tell her later, “How about we change the subject,” Damon offers. Oh, goody, “How about you, Cori?” Her nickname coming out of his mouth causes her to snap her gaze to him and grip her fork until her knuckles are white, “Why aren’t you part of the cheer team? Doesn’t seem very school-spirited of you.” 

Once again, Caroline answers for her, “Oh, cheer isn’t Cori’s thing. But, her sister Grace was the captain until she graduated last year she was the BEST.” Cori opens her mouth to cut her off but Caroline is talking directly to Damon and not stopping, “She’s on the swim team. She’s like the record holder for…something at our school, she’s really good.” While that was true and Cori appreciated Caroline validating her skill somewhat, she didn’t care for her new stalker to know any information about her, “The team went to state last year but Cori kind of choked during the backstroke, like, major screaming freak out in the middle of the lane–” 

Cori claps her hands together and stands up, “Alright,” she chuckles nervously, “that’s my cue to start cleaning up.” 

“Cori, you don’t have to do that,” Elena jumps up, trying to stop her from collecting empty plates and cups, “You already cooked and everything.” 

“No, it’s okay,’ she insists, “you guys need to…” she gestures a hand to the group vaguely, “Bond more than I do.” After collecting all of the dirty dishes, Cori heads into the kitchen and tries to stop her hands from shaking. She tries to distract herself from the muffled chatter in the other room by scraping plates and putting the leftovers away but her mind and heart are racing. Her little “freak out” at last year's state swim meet was a rather sore subject for Cori and Caroline knew that. Why would she bring it up? She knew that Caroline could be a little unaware of how she sounded sometimes but this just made Cori upset. 

Caroline is supposed to be her friend and here this weirdo older brother of Stefan rolls into town and she’s blabbing about her weakest moments in front of him. It was just a panic attack…at least, that’s the story she told everyone because that’s what her doctors told her it was which she had a sneaking suspicion they told her that just to get her to shut up. To her, it was the entire pool turning dark, blood red around her as she swam and a clawed, slippery hand took hold of her ankle and pulled her down into the water. But, sure, she’d shrink it down to a panic attack because no one else needed to know that. 

“Damn, what did that pan ever do to you?” Cori jumps, dropping the pan she had been aggressively scrubbing into the sink with a loud THUNK. Lost in her thoughts, she hadn’t heard Damon approach her at the sink and he seemed quite amused with himself when she turned to look at him. 

“What are you doing here?” She demands, fully turning to him with one hand on her hip and another gripping the edge of the sink. 

He holds up a glass, looking down at her smugly, “One more.” He says. 

Her nostrils flare, “Not in the kitchen,” she growls, “I mean here. In this house. With Caroline.” she grits her teeth. 

Damon snorts, “What? Did you think one empty threat from a teenage girl is gonna drive me out of town?” He asks, “My family lives here and it’s time I made myself a home in Mystic Falls so I’m not going anywhere, no matter how many of Elena’s little overbearing friends talk back to me.” 

Cori pokes a finger into his hard chest, staring up at him with fierce eyes, “I don’t know what sort of beef you have going on with Stefan, but you need to leave Caroline out of it.” The amused smirk is still plastered on his face and it boils her blood, “Caroline falls fast and she loves hard and she deserves more than to be your little pawn to infiltrate your little brother’s life.” She shoves her finger harder into his chest and he takes half a step back, “You may think you’re fooling everyone, but I can tell that Stefan doesn’t want you ‘making a home here’ and neither do I.” 

Damon snatches the wrist connected to her finger against his chest and squeezes it hard. Cori sucks in a breath and glares at him as he catches her eyes, “You’re charmed by me. You think I’m great for Caroline and you want me to hang out with your little group more often.” He says in a low, monotone voice, his eyes unblinking. 

Cori scoffs and wrenches her wrist out of his grasp, “You wish, freak,” she shoves his chest, “get a job! Stay away from her!” She exclaims. Damon frowned at her, glancing at her neck and wrists to see if she was wearing anything that could contain vervain but he didn’t see any jewelry. He supposed she could be drinking it which meant he was shit out of luck on compelling her. He could just kill her if she kept being difficult. 

“Uh, Cori,” they both turn to see Bonnie and Elena awkwardly standing in the kitchen, looking between her and the dark-haired man, “Do you need any help?” Bonnie asks. 

“Yes, in fact,” Damon says, making his way out of the kitchen, “she needs a lot of help.” 

Cori sighs deeply, rubbing her wrist gently. “What was that about?” Elena whispers as she and Bonnie slowly approach their friend. 

“He’s weird,” she says simply, “I saw him that night at the grill, smiling at Caroline,” Cori explains to them, “before we left I stopped at his table and told him to back off but I guess it didn’t work because, well, he’s here.” she runs her fingers through her hair before turning back to the sink and loading the rinsed dishes into the dishwasher, “I just was reminding him that he needs to stay away from her.” 

“He didn’t look very defeated,” Bonnie observes and she can practically see the looks Elena and her are exchanging behind her back. 

“No, he didn’t.” She mutters, loading the last few dishes into the dishwasher. Maybe she was being overbearing. Maybe Caroline could take care of herself and Cori should stop trying so hard to dictate her relationship status. She just couldn’t shake the weird feeling she got when Damon was around.

okay to complete this ask, i had to recall the main storylines from each season. this is what i produced. i will stick that below along with my decisions and thought processes.

i loved early season 7

nora, val, and mary louise were funny; matt being angry all the time was funny; bonnie and damon coming back from europe and immediately killing a heretic was funny

bonnie had so much sass in this season

but then plec had to drive her underground again with the magic pills & nearly killing her & all that shit

and i liked rayna, to some extent; she was pretty cool

but there was no reason to drag bonnie in the mix and make her kill her friends just because she took some stupid pills, just because some relative of enzo wanted her to open a vault

that st. john stuff was insanity; i still don't understand it

i don't think the characters did either; probably not the actors, either

i also don't like that the rayna storyline killed off nora and ML, like, let the lesbian heretics live, fuck off julie plec

and bonnie and nora should've had a fling but that's a different story

so yeah… the 7 years into the future storyline + hunters is the storyline i would erase

also… i don't know why caroline kept showing up with blood on her face and ranting about stefan, like, i was genuinely confused

it kept reminding me of season 2 when damon dated that newscaster but then stefan killed her.. or whatever happened...

anyway, let's take a look at a close contender… season 8 - donovans

why… the fuck… did the donovans have to have a family reunion?

if they were dedicated towards keeping kai alive (therefore omiting his death storyline), he'd be a great time

i can see him and damon becoming buddies & being absolute menaces together

damon fights it sooo hard at first, but can't help wanting to dive into kai's bad influence

he makes vampirism feel like vampirism again… raising hell and not being afraid to be the bad guy

while simultaneously getting bad looks from all his friends and promising he's trying to be kai's good influence, but we all know he's not trying that hard

jo would survive and raise her twins with her creepy husband

she'd live in fear of kai coming after her kids any given day, but would try to ignore the thought

maybe they move away & free us from ric for good

but while this sounds really fun, i don't know where the story would go from there

kai would definitely get stuck under lily's control with the rest of the heretics & he'd have a big fucking fit about it

if enzo got with bonnie with kai still alive, that would be ugly

he would totally fuck a siren… and then help them kill the twins

but…

him killing jo & raising absolute hell was very fun & i loved it

his sudden return in s8, effectively pissing off damon & ric was hilarious

loved that he got back & immediately killed a grill employee

just like old times

i really wished they didn't kill him off, but i did like his pop-up later on

I have not done a rewatch from season 1 in years.

They were all so cute and young back then!

Stefan is creepy the second he introduces himself to Elena 😂. Immediate ick

Caroline could have also been way more interesting in later seasons. The girl was in a physically and emotionally abusive relationship!!!! She was turned. She was as a child. Instead we got what we got and all the meta (do we still use that term idk) does not erase the nonsense. In response to feeling rejected by Stefan for Elena, Bonnie tells her it’s not a competition. Caroline’s response is given in the most terrifying tone, “yeah it is”. She needs to be studied 😭

I feel similarly about Tyler. What a waste of an interesting character. They gave him a redemption for what?

THANK YOU FOR UNDERSTANDING the potential we missed with Matt x Bonnie?!! if I can just rant a bit like... they were the two who wanted most desperately to be away from the vampires, sure, but I also think that they could have been so good for each other. they're the most grounded characters in the show, they've suffered so much due to absent moms and the subsequent loss of the one close family member they had left being killed (Vicki/Grams). they bring out a fun side of each other, like all the cute lifeguard buddy jokes in s2. i just 🥺

matt and bonnie would have been so iconic tbh like. they had the best chemistry and matt is a genuinely decent and sweet guy for bonnie even if he's super white bread (i don't understand fandom's problem with him because he's cute and his only flaw is being irrelevant and useless). it was always odd to me that since matt clearly likes to date elena's friends and has dated elena and caroline before he wouldn't want to date bonnie and literally got the most randomly introduced white women as his love interests when he and bonnie had an established friendship/camaraderie, chemistry, genuinely like being together and would totally get something out of dating each other. they both have the same values and care so much for each other, and while matt was complicit he wasn't nearly as exploitative of bonnie as elena or the others. he noticed something was wrong when she went missing and made the most effort to keep in touch/contact her out of the whole group, and i just. ugh ugh ugh. 300 emails???? how did they not end up together idgi
