Otto: That was the day I came up with the idea for a neuroprosthetic! I remember it vividly. I was standing on the edge of my toilet, hanging a clock. The porcelain was wet, I slipped, hit my head on the edge of the sink… and when I came to, I had a revelation… a vision! A picture in my head. A picture of this. Just like you said, the synergy between our muscles and the command module computer to restore fine motor control, can be made possible. Our own neural interface!

Peter: And somehow you still refuse to let Gloria Maria interview you on the Globe.

Otto: Oh, Peter, if they really are waiting for a spectacle, WE will give it to them!

Otto: Alright, then tell me, "future boy"... who's president of the United States in 2018?

Peter:...Donald Trump.

Otto: Donald Trump? The boxer's advisor?! Ha!

Peter: Uh, what?

A big tube shows the last remainings of footage that Peter was able to save.

Otto: Good evening. I'm Dr. Otto Octavius, i'm standing on my laboratory at Greenwich Village-- It's Thursday afternoon, November 1st, 2018, 6:18 p.m., and this is our latest big experiment, the one i've been waiting for all my life!

Otto: I pass the word to my partner, who will bear with the details since none of this would have been made possible without him. Peter? Yeah, yeah, come over here, I want you to be on the frame.

Peter: I-uh...

Otto: Go on, it's okay, let's keep the tape rolling.

Peter: Geez... Yes, I'm Peter Parker, and together we worked with a meshing networking to integrate directly into a intracranial neural interface, mostly to extract data from chemical synapses inside the brain, thus accelerating the information via neurotransmitters receptors at postsynaptic potential.

Peter: Doc, seriously, we need to--

Otto: And through extensive study in vivo for constraint in biomechanics, we were able to trace parameters for training procedure to better balance neural activity load, through simple synergy in motor neurons. Whereas action potential of the neurons are usually barried by the short coming of milliseconds, this amplified neurosensor allows it to happen under one nanosecond!

Otto: ONE NANOSECOND?! One... nanosecond...

Peter: You want to watch the rest of it?

Otto: Alas, just keep it playing, boy! I'm starting to feel an occipital neuralgia creep out my migraine aura.

Static starts to intemperate noise on the images.

A series of buzzing noises became proeminent as the tape begins to wear out.

Peter: Yes, and that's exatcly why we should think this through before it's ready to handle, I'm still not sure about the effects the excitatory amino acids-zzzthe overfitting aspects-zzzzzzzthe neural network layers can'tzzz

Otto: What are you doing?

Peter: I'm trying-zzzzREALLY-zzz-zzhard. Will you-zzzzzzzz

Otto: If you start making sense, maybe we can both come to a consense!

Peter: Then I guess we're gonna be here for a while-zzzz-zzzz I need to call my aunt.

Otto: This is insanity-zzz-zzz-zzzbelieve you're doing this to me-zzzz-zz

Otto:... Great Scott! When did I have become so careless?

Peter: Excellent question, mister “Reckless youth”. I think there's more.

Peter tries to fast foward the recording, but the image pendured as a black background.

...Until there was new images playing.

This time, both men are standing on the kitchen area of Octavius Industries, where a boombox is blasting to a rock mashup of the song "How Our Story Goes".

Peter is currently holding a wrench to pretend it's a microphone, while Otto uses a mannequin arm, moving his fingers like he's playing on guitar strings. Peter starts to improvise a really bad dance to the rhythm.

Suddenly he turns off the recording camera.

Peter: Heh, I-uh, forgot that was in there.

Cut to:

Ext. Park. Night.

Otto: But I can't hold any ill thoughts about her... Actually we almost had gotten engaged, how crazy is that?

Peter: Yeah, believe me, Doc. There's a lot in my life that I wish I could just... Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind it.

Otto:...

Peter: It's a movie.

Otto: Oh. Terrific. Is it somehow a variant of our post-german expressionism iconographies?

Peter: What? I don't know. Where the hell did that came from?

Otto: Just trying to find the appeal of 2000s cinema, I suppose.

Peter: Honestly, you got me there. Especially because there aren't many people like you, but a dozen like me, who really don't have time to notice that kind of stuff. But hey, we gotta have fun with what we get from it. Right?

Otto: Yes, it doesn't sound too bad, no.

Peter: Just don't get me started with sequels, I think that's been a dead concept a long time ago.

Cut to:

Ext. Main street. Night

Otto: I'll be really dispondent to see you go, Peter.

Peter:..

Otto: No matter what happened and how much bad blood we will have between us... You've really made a difference in my life. You've given me something to shoot for.

Peter: It's-- gonna be hard. Waiting before I can talk to you about everything that's happened in the past few days.

Otto: I know... you can't force yourself to do anything on my behalf, my dear.

Peter just looks at him, he can't really smile, but there was a faint intent to do it, and somehow, it was enough.

Peter: I never did. Helping you... I liked it, I was good at it.

Otto reaches his hand, which leads to an immediate contact being sealed.

Otto: "Let faith oust fact... let fancy oust memory... I look deep down and do believe."

Peter: I already know you're on your thirties, Doc.

Otto: Shut up, but it is my childhood favorite. Do you have one?

Peter: I really can't tell mine without you getting confused.

Otto: I fell right into that one. Didn't hurt to ask.

“You’re an asshole.” Barry x Rafe

Summer on the cut was sticky-hot, sweat dripping down your neck as you swatted away the mosquitos that were buzzing around. Summer on the cut was soundtracked by cicadas, blown-out boomboxes playing summer mixtape playlists, boat engines roaring with life, water crashing on the rocky shores.

No matter what you were doing it was hard to escape the heat. It clung heavily to the body like a second skin, weighing it down until you were groggy and irritable.

That's just what Barry was today, irritable. Some people would argue that most day's he was irritable. Barry would venture to agree.

But when Rafe Cameron came ripping up the rocky path on his dirt bike, Barry wasn't in the mood for the constant test of patience. Rafe was a firecracker, a dangerous loose canon, and Barry wanted nothing to do with the explosion that was inevitable. Unfortunately enough he kept finding himself entangled in the web that was Rafe. Barry was a sucker for a quick job to make a fat sum of money and Rafe just happened to be the most consistent employer.

There was apart of Barry that was envious of Rafe and the rest of the Cameron family. He wanted to be rich enough that he didn't have to worry about anything. And on the off chance that there was something he had to worry about, Barry wanted to have enough money to take care of things and smooth them over without even breaking a sweat. He envied the privilege he had, the way that Rafe walked through the world thinking that he was invincible because he always had been and always will be. But Rafe was stupid and too unpredictable, so Barry wanted to deal with him as little as possible for matters that went beyond the financial compensation that came with doing a quick, dirty job for him. He could look past his own moral high ground if it meant he was getting a little bit of money to burn a hole in his pocket.

The two of them weren’t friends or anything. That wasn’t the case at all. They were colleagues at most, two people that were indebted to each other after having more than enough information to fuck over one another in the grand scheme of things. Rafe wasn’t a friend of Barry’s at all, he was a customer. But of a different variety. Barry offered Rafe extra services, but only if the price was right. 

Rafe dismounts his dirt bike and rests his helmet on the seat. He sniffles, the post nasal drip in full effect from the habit that all of his little trips to Barry were fueling. He walks through the dying grass towards the front of the trailer, where Barry was hunched over the hood over some beater of a car that was only really worth being scrapped for parts.

“Well, well, well, Country Club” Barry laughs, wiping his oil-stained hands on the fabric of his coveralls. “Long time no see” He adds sarcastically, knowing that Rafe had been by to score and 8-ball only a handful of days ago. 

Rafe sniffled, half smiling though it didn’t reach his eyes. “Just can’t beat your charming customer service” He lilts, retrieving a handful of stiff feeling bills from the money clip in his shorts pocket. He laughs, sounding maniacal and forced, and tosses the money at Barry’s feet. 

This pisses Barry off, causing him to flashback to months ago when Ward Cameron did the same thing when he came by to cover Rafe’s ass by paying off yet another one of his debts. “What the fuck you do that for, huh?” He asks, getting worked up. “You learn that shit from your daddy, Country Club? He teach you how to throw money at all the little people you think you can walk all over?” 

Barry would tolerate a lot of things but disrespect wouldn't be one of them. 

Rafe sucks in a big breath, having not anticipated such a remake from Barry. It was like Barry was one of the few people who truly knew how to hit Rafe where it really hurt him. He knew all about Rafe’s relationship with his dad, how Ward Cameron was covering for his son, who was the real person who shot Sheriff Peterkin — not John B. Routledge. 

“You know,” Rafe starts, sniffling and wiping a thumb under his nostril. It’s been long enough since his last fix that he can feel the effects of his dependency and the onset of withdrawal. Under his skin feels hot like fire, only amplified by the heat wave that the weather channel didn't predict. All he wanted to do was pick up a bag to get him through the next few days but Barry always had to go and make shit difficult. “You’re a fuckin’ asshole, man”

Barry whips his head to look at Rafe, his eyes blowing wide, pupils the size of pinpricks. “What the fuck’d you say to me, Country Club?” He grabs Rafe by both sides of his collared shirt and shakes him roughly, pushing him up against the big oak tree nearby.

Rafe looks up at Barry and cracks a smile before composing himself. Everything was a joke to him because he’d never faced enough consequences to take shit seriously. “I said you’re an asshole, man…” He chuckles despite the tight grip Barry had on his now-wrinkled pastel shirt. Rafe tries to break free but it only makes Barry grab onto him harder, looking at him in the eye with a familiar, unhinged look.

“Now that’s what I thought your J. Crew lookin’ ass just said” Barry stands up to his full height, trying to seem more intimidating. He cocks back an arm like he was winding up for a punch, waiting to see how long it would take Rafe to flinch.

He sees a flash of something in Rafe’s eyes —respect? fear? Barry wasn’t quite sure but it makes him feel powerful, like he was the one who was really in charge, not just playing slave to the little rich boy who lived on the other side of the island who was spending his daddy’s money on the best coke in town.

Rafe closes his eyes as he braces for the punch but it’s never delivered. He squints an eye open to see Barry’s face only a few inches away, smiling wildly, clearly satisfied after having spooked Rafe successfully. He wasn’t actually going to hit him, he just needed to do something to let Rafe know that Barry wasn’t just some tool to use to when he needed help with some bullshit nefarious scheme.

The two of them lock eyes, feeling the other’s hot breath fan over their faces as they waited to see who would be the first one to retreat, to give up their power. When Barry realizes that Rafe wasn’t planning on letting up any time soon it’s like a switch is flicked on in his brain and he starts laughing. It’s a low and slow sound, plagued with the whispers of cigarette smoke that still lingered in Barry’s blackened lungs.

Sometimes he’s Jekyll and sometimes he’s Hyde. Rafe is too. Maybe that’s why the two of them got along so well.

Headquarters Frankfurt on the Bertram Strasse 8, one big Neumann tube mic and 150,000 big watts on 873 AM Middle Wave and Satellite microwave transmission - I recorded it 40 miles away on my Sharp boombox on a cassette - we took it back to NYC, Joe Berger remastered it, I put it on a disk and brought it back to my friends at AFN Frankfurt - they broadcast the broadcast, and it's on my first album! Straight up organ trio with the late great James Preston funky drums, Barry Finnerty guitar and yours truly Jon Hammond at the XB-2 Hammond organ - thanks Tino for the Roland Cube amp with 2 inputs, we're both plugged in to the Cube with an EV heavy-duty speaker - have a beautiful Labor Day Weekend everybody, make sure to mask-up in public, we're still in the pandemic. once the battle wagon races are legalized in goldcliff there’s no way barry & lup don’t get in on that action. their entrances are always ridiculously dramatic w/ a portal opening to the Spiritual Realm and a lot of fire & smoke, maybe some sort of boombox rigged up... tho for all their magical abilities their wagon is primarily tech-based in lieu of magic. the only times they involve magic is when lup gets hyper-competitive and starts throwing fire at opposing teams who get to close, and barry rushing to negate any damage she might do.

“At This Moment” by Billy Vera & The Beaters (1981/1987)

*Originally released in 1981, “At This Moment” became a belated #1 smash in 1987 thanks to its use on the sitcom Family Ties. It became sort of the theme song for the relationship between Michael J. Fox’s Alex and Tracy Pollan’s Ellen. Much like Patti Austin & James Ingram’s “Baby Come To Me” became a belated hit after being used for Luke & Laura on General Hospital.  

*I still have a ginormous crush on Michael J. Fox. Actually, I think that’s come about in the last 15-20 years. I didn’t feel the same way as a kid as I do now.

*”At This Moment” is the best Hall & Oates song that Hall & Oates never recorded. The sustained note Billy hits towards the end of the song (very dramatic!) almost sounds like it was flown in from Daryl Hall’s voice box. 

*When I was in 6th grade, my middle school in Southfield, MI held auditions for a talent show. I did some awful comedy skit (I was completely unprepared and also very shy), but my friend Marshall Mobley walked up to the front of the classroom where the auditions were being played, popped a cassette into the little boombox sitting there, and sang “At This Moment” with all the soul his barely pubescent self could muster. This kid was one of the few friends I had at the time (and we’d been buddies/nemeses for a solid two years at this point), and never once had it come up that dude could sing like a pro. I was slack-jawed. I wonder what he’s up to these days. I looked him up on Facebook maybe 7 or 8 years ago and asked him if he remembered me. “Yeah, I broke your glasses when we were kids and your mom made my mom pay for them.” Conversation over. Oh, well.
