¹reference to an important amis/pangcah cultural symbol, visible in the cover art in the center of the soldier's hat. i could not find the actual word for it in amis and, interestingly, it only appears in the japanese sections of the song. will edit the post if i find it T-T

this song is the story lead singer (and lyricist on this song) Natsuko once heard from her father about her grandfather's experience as an amis volunteer soldier during the final days of WWII. full translation of the portion of the interview that talks about this particular song in very great depth here. brief excerpt for basic contexts:

In 1945, the US military began bombing Taiwan, and Japan was on the verge of facing the reality of their imminent loss. A group of young Amis men were at the Takasago volunteer military camp in Taichung, witnessing the chaos firsthand and fearing deployment under such circumstances. They resolved not to fight any more on another nation’s behalf, and a number of them decided to desert and return to Taitung on foot. Natsuko’s grandfather was among them.

Was he even still himself? It was hard to tell, harder still because this deep underneath the temple grounds day and night can only be guessed, the guard change a distant noise outside the room's door. The room barely needs a door, as Boya could no more walk out than he could dig his way out through the solid stones of the mountain under his feet. Still, distantly he appreciated the privacy.

Privacy was the only 'comfort' he had however, because no fashi in their right minds included furnishings inside the bindings. There was only Stone, cold and unyielding. There were no walls he could lean against; the magic that kept him inside even less friendly than the stone floor. The lines written into the binding not only contained him, they also repelled. A sensible precaution, really, if the thing you're binding is a demon the size of a house and strong enough to knock down walls.

The only other positive thing that Boya has found is that he has space. He can pace, the Circle almost as large as his own rooms in the temple above. The good thing about building Circles that can contain ogre-sized demons and minor mountain spirits is that human-shaped Boya had room to stretch his legs.

His own rooms... Boya resolutely decided not to think about that. They might not even be his anymore. Although of that were the case the temple had certainly disavowed him quickly, because he can't have been more for more than...

Time became hard to name all too soon. For a while it felt truly unknowable, no one coming in or out, the guard changes outside regular but uncertain. Which was the day shift, and which the night guard? Had he woken during the morning, the evening?

Jingyun's hunters have long trained themselves to do without many amenities. Rest and food are gratefully accepted when available, and taken when and where possible. Boya's personal record for staying awake was 5 days, though he wouldn't call his past self entirely sane at the end of that period. He'd then slept for night and a day, travelled back to the temple after that mission, and promptly fallen ill upon his arrival.

All of which is to say it took him a while to notice his masters weren't coming back. He'd begun to feel tired, and pacing, stretching, keeping himself moving, did help, his injuries from before kept him from doing full katas, or deep meditation.

He did sleep, in between, fitfully, coldly, the fire inside him calling for warmth, for a sun that had never shone on these rooms. They were too short stretches of dreams, waking him in starts of *enemies close*, or *run*, or the sensation of falling as wings he was sure he had a moment, a blink of an eye ago, disappeared, and left him awake, his heart pounding as he lay upon the unforgiving floor.

How long these naps (so nice a word, such a restful sounding phrase for these tiring bouts of sleep) lasted he couldn't tell either, and he must have missed a guard change at some point, because the next shift lasted for half an eternity. Especially since this is when hunger made itself known.

It had already been there, growling complaints against Boya's will (his last meal in the capital seems years ago, not days). He'd ignored it, because he's good at ignoring things that are pointless or obnoxious.

This time when he woke it was no longer complaining: it was gnawing, pulling every stray thread of Boya's frayed attention to the question *what if they left me here to die?*

Rationally, Boya thought this unlikely: they wouldn't put guards outside his doors, further, they wouldn't bother leaving him to die a slow death, but rather get rid of him quickly, as is the Jingyun way.

His old masters– those who yet lived, most of them not his own teachers– had watched him until he woke. Until he proved himself(in their eyes) their false disciple, and had become trapped inside the magic.

What then? Some proof of their righteousness, his evil? If he doesn’t need food at all, or if he feeds off the ambient qi, some soul-sucking vampire who dies a slow, slow death in bindings like the one he's stuck in, will that be proof... His masters are no fools, or so Boya always thought, except they're not letting him out, and Boya is *done waiting*.

He yells, then. Calls the guards, and when they don't answer he calls the temple masters. They don't hear him, and either the guards do not pass on his words, or their mutual masters have no wish to hear what the Thing That Is Not Boya has to say.

They are wrong, of course: he is Boya. Whatever else he is, whatever infected him, cursed him, whatever else he carried away from that battle against the Snake, he is *also* Boya.

He screams then, sometimes curses, sometimes wordlessly, falling silent for stretches of endlessly-same time until he cannot stand the quiet, cannot stand the hunger...

...

Boya couldn't tell how long it's been, but the hunger continued to make itself known, and his voice was starting to give out, when a small hooded figure entered his– he almost said his *room*– his cell.

KOCAELİ (İGFA) – İstanbul Sanayi Odası’nın açıkladığı Türkiye’nin 500 Büyük Sanayi Kuruluşu Raporu 2023’te Kocaeli’den 80 firma yer aldı. Açıklanan sonuçları değerlendiren Kocaeli Sanayi Odası (KSO) Başkanı Ayhan Zeytinoğlu, “Kocaeli bu yıl 80 firma ile Türkiye’nin en büyük 500 firması içerisinde yer aldı. Her yıl olduğu gibi listenin en başında TÜPRAŞ yer alırken, geçen yıl üçüncü sırada bulunan Ford Otomotiv Sanayi bu yıl ikinci sırada yer aldı.

Türkiye’nin gurur tablosu içinde yer alan en büyük 500 sanayi kuruluşu içerisinde yer alan 80 Kocaeli firmasını kutlayan Kocaeli Sanayi Odası Başkanı Ayhan Zeytinoğlu “İstanbul Sanayi Odası’nın açıkladığı listede, firma merkezlerinin başka illerde olmasından dolayı Kocaelili firma sayısı 38 olarak görünüyor. Hace unos años organicé un club de lectura de cómics titulado VIÑETA A VIÑETA, donde nos reunimos a leer y analizar visualmente algunos cómics. Fueron tres hermosas sesiones donde nos juntamos entre amantes de la narrativa gráfica para hablar de composición, ritmos de lectura, uso del color, entre otros temas.

Voy a retomar este proyecto en la siguiente modalidad: realizaré breves análisis visuales de páginas de cómics que he leído últimamente y los compartiré por aquí.

Parto esta sección con un cómic muy lindo llamado “5 mundos. El guerrero de arena” primer libro de esta saga de fantasía y aventura creada por Mark y Alexis Siegel, Xanthe Bouma, Matt Rockefeller y Boya Sun, publicado en español por la editorial Astronave.

La página que seleccioné muestra a la protagonista, Oona Lee, persiguiendo a su arena mágica por un conducto de ventilación cuando por casualidad escucha una conversación en un salón contiguo. Esta página se compone de cuatro viñetas horizontales y se centra principalmente en la figura de Onna.

Lo primero que me llama la atención es cómo la figuna de Onna, tanto su dirección corporal como su mirada, nos lleva siempre de izquierda a derecha y de arriba hacia abajo guiando así nuestra lectura de la página. En la viñeta nº 1 vemos una dirección horizontal, en las viñetas nº 2 y 3 una dirección diagonal hacia abajo y finalmente en la viñeta nº 4 una dirección horizontal y levemente hacia abajo. Esta relación se da tanto por la posición de Onna como por la relación con los globos de texto.

Es interesante como estas direcciones son dinámicas. Personalmente interpreto estas direcciones como una curva descendente que conduce a nuestro ojo en la lectura. La dinámica de esta secuencia también se da por la posición de nuestra mirada (lector/a): en la primera viñeta estamos de frente a Onna, en la segunda y tercera estamos bajo su figura, mientras que en la cuarta viñeta estamos levemente elevados a su rostro.

En este sentido el rostro se convierte en un elemento narrativo, la expresión y la mirada de Onna nos va relatando la acción. Por lo mismo su rostro se va haciendo cada vez más grande hasta centrarnos en la expresión de sus ojos para demostrar la sorpresa e intriga de la conversación que Onna llegó a escuchar por casualidad.

Por último, me parece genial cómo sugiere el espacio de “adentro” y “afuera” a través de recursos tan simples. En las dos primeras viñetas estamos dentro del conducto de ventilación junto a Onna, mientras que en la tercera y cuarta viñeta estamos fuera del conducto y vemos a la protagonista a través de esta pequeña reja. Entendemos que Onna está escuchando la conversación del salón contiguo sólo con su mirada, el detalle de la reja y la iluminación. Me parece una transición hermosa.   

Esta secuencia nos muestra de manera maravillosa cómo posicionar la mirada del lector, cómo proponer direcciones con los movimientos y miradas de los personajes y cómo diferenciar los espacios interiores y exteriores. Todo esto en cuatro viñetas. Quedan aún muchos elementos por analizar ¿cuáles te llaman la atención a ti?

En lo personal me encantó este primer libro de la saga, lo encontré muy cálido y dinámico, y la propuesta de paisajes y escenarios me pareció muy bello.
