🇬🇧 Elite is a groundbreaking space trading and combat video game that emerged in the mid-1980s, captivating gamers with its expansive universe and innovative gameplay. Developed by David Braben and Ian Bell, Elite was first released in 1984 for the BBC Micro and Acorn Electron computers, later expanding to other platforms.
🚀 Elite was revolutionary for its time, offering players an open-ended experience set in a vast, procedurally generated galaxy. The game allowed players to pilot a spaceship through various star systems, engaging in trade, combat, and exploration. Elite's development was driven by its ambitious scope and technical achievements, leveraging procedural generation to create a seemingly infinite universe within the constraints of early computer hardware.
🌌 In Elite, players assume the role of a spaceship pilot navigating through a complex network of star systems, each with its own planets, space stations, and resources. The game featured realistic physics for space travel and combat, adding to its immersive appeal. Players could trade goods between star systems, mine asteroids for resources, and engage in dogfights with pirates or law enforcement.
🛰️ As players accumulated wealth and experience, they could upgrade their ships with better weapons, shields, and cargo holds. Elite introduced a reputation system that influenced how NPCs interacted with the player, offering a sense of depth and consequence to the gameplay.
🎮 Elite's success paved the way for the space simulation genre, inspiring a generation of game developers and spawning sequels and spiritual successors. The game's combination of exploration, combat, and trading became a hallmark of the genre, influencing titles like Wing Commander, Freelancer, and EVE Online.
🌠 In recent years, Elite Dangerous, a modern incarnation of the series developed by Frontier Developments, has garnered acclaim for its expansive gameplay and realistic depiction of space exploration. Elite Dangerous builds upon the foundation laid by the original Elite, offering players an even more immersive experience in a procedurally generated galaxy.
🌟 Elite remains a landmark in video game history, celebrated for its ambition, innovation, and enduring influence on the space simulation genre. For gamers looking to explore the vast reaches of space and engage in thrilling adventures, Elite remains a timeless classic worth experiencing. Fly safe, Commander!

the parodies of children's media on two of a kind are so fascinating. it gives a prototype of ernie wise as the conceited, wannabe it-girl before eddie braben on the bbc... the attempts never really get saccharine since ernie gets only about 5 seconds to establish the premise before eric comes onstage... i find myself wishing for a peter and the wolf album narrated by both of them...

From the show notes:
Traveller is a science-fiction roleplaying game of bold explorers and brave adventurers. Designed by Marc Miller, it was the first major SFRPG, remains a major title in the field, and has influenced everything from computer games to comics, film and TV series. But how’s the old ship holding together after forty-five years in spaaace? Traveller development has forked, and there are several different editions available. We look at the most recent, the Traveller Core Rulebook Update 2022 from Mongoose Publishing, with mechanics designed by Gareth Hanrahan. Some of us like it, some of us don’t, some of us respect its legacy more than we want to play it, and all that makes for an entertaining conversation. “If you came out of Star Wars going, ‘The Force? Pfft! I want to be Han Solo!’ then Traveller is your game.” – James  More information on this edition of Traveller at DriveThruRPG; and for comparison here’s a link to the 5th edition of Traveller from Far Future Enterprises, the one created by Marc Miller, the game’s original designer.  Footnote: at some point in the episode we say that The Expanse was based on a Traveller campaign, and that’s probably wrong. While sources indicate that the background and story of the SF series were developed as an RPG campaign, we can’t find any specific reference to the game system. Similarly, Marc Miller has said that Firefly was based on a Traveller campaign that Joss Whedon ran while at college in the 1980s, and while that’s a great story we haven’t been able to find anything to back that up either. Also you should watch The Expanse, it is basically an RPG campaign in space right down to players dropping out and their PCs mysteriously not showing up in the story any more. James also talks about the game Elite, originally released in 1984 on the BBC Model B home computer. Genuinely amazing for the time (occluded wireframe graphics, realtime 3D starship combat, eight procedurally generated galaxies with 256 planets each – all running in 32K of memory), it remains a highwater mark in game design. It’s also upfront about its debt to Traveller. Here’s a short documentary of co-designer David Braben playing it and talking about it some years later.

Yeah this is my son Braben. He is nonverbal unless he's screaming and then the only way to get him to stop is to lock him in his room and play loud drum and bass. He usually runs out of steam after about an hour. We think he hates us but we can't tell. One time after a particularly loud screaming session (over 5 hours of DnB time before he cooled off) he seemed Darkly Smiley and when we woke up in the morning we couldn't find the cat anywhere. The police found no evidence of foul play but sometimes he screams BUTTERCUP (the cats name) so we think he maybe killed it and threw the body in the lake overnight or something. That was the day after his 24th birthday

Quasar H1821+643.X-ray: NASA/CXC/Univ. of Nottingham/H. Russell et al.; Radio: NSF/NRAO/VLA; Image Processing: NASA/CXC/SAO/N. Wolk This image shows a quasar, a rapidly growing supermassive black hole, which is not achieving what astronomers would expect from it, as reported in our latest press release. Data from NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory (blue) and radio data from the NSF’s Karl G. Jansky’s Very Large Array (red) reveal some of the evidence for this quasar’s disappointing impact on its host galaxy. Known as H1821+643, this quasar is about 3.4 billion light-years from Earth. Quasars are a rare and extreme class of supermassive black holes that are furiously pulling material inwards, producing intense radiation and sometimes powerful jets. H1821+643 is the closest quasar to Earth in a cluster of galaxies. Quasars are different than other supermassive black holes in the centers of galaxy clusters in that they are pulling in more material at a higher rate. Astronomers have found that non-quasar black holes growing at moderate rates influence their surroundings by preventing the intergalactic hot gas from cooling down too much. This regulates the growth of stars around the black hole. The influence of quasars, however, is not as well known. This new study of H1821+643 that quasars — despite being so active — may be less important in driving the fate of their host galaxy and cluster than some scientists might expect. To reach this conclusion the team used Chandra to study the hot gas that H1821+643 and its host galaxy are shrouded in. The bright X-rays from the quasar, however, made it difficult to study the weaker X-rays from the hot gas. The researchers carefully removed the X-ray glare to reveal what the black hole’s influence is, which is reflected in the new composite image showing X-rays from hot gas in the cluster surrounding the quasar. This allowed them to see that the quasar is actually having little effect on its surroundings. Using Chandra, the team found that the density of gas near the black hole in the center of the galaxy is much higher, and the gas temperatures much lower, than in regions farther away. Scientists expect the hot gas to behave like this when there is little or no energy input (which would typically come from outbursts from a black hole) to prevent the hot gas from cooling down and flowing towards the center of the cluster. A paper describing these results has been accepted into the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society and is available online. The authors are Helen Russell (University of Nottingham, UK), Paul Nulsen (Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian), Andy Fabian (University of Cambridge, UK), Thomas Braben (University of Nottingham), Niel Brandt (Penn State University), Lucy Clews (University of Nottingham), Michael McDonald (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), Christopher Reynolds (University of Maryland), Jeremy Saunders (Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Research), and Sylvain Veilleux (University of Maryland). At the center of the image is a bright, white, circular light, similar to the beam of a flashlight if it was pointed directly toward you. A fuzzy, bar-shaped structure of red-colored radio light, slightly larger than the width of the white light, surrounds the circular structure. The red bar also extends above and below the white light, stretching in a somewhat straight line from about the one o’clock position to the seven o’clock position on a clock face. On either side of the red bar, X-ray light is present as blue, wispy clouds of hot gas that are brighter closer to the red and white features. The brighter clouds represent more dense gas. Research: 1st person cockpit shooter games - Elite
Tumblr media
Elite is a old school space combat & trading video game, where the player plays from the cockpit of a ship. It was written and developed by David Braben and Ian Bell and originally published by Acornsoft for the BBC Micro and Acorn Electron computers in September 1984. It’s open-ended game model, and revolutionary 3D graphics at the time led to it being ported to virtually every contemporary home computer system and earned it a place as a classic and a genre maker in gaming history. The game's title derives from one of the player's goals of raising their combat rating to the exalted heights of "Elite".
