Private commission for Joe B, inspired by his childhood memories in the Isle of Man. A very personal gift for his brother on his wedding day.

The Book of Learning (volume three) records recent developments in my printmaking work and one of those is opening my Etsy shop (link in biog). In this part of the sketchbook I set out photos various finished outcomes as a structure to take notes. This is learning too, because I have found out which images sell best at certain points and to certain demographics. Huge thanks to everyone who bought prints from the shop already. There is a new set of work in production to join the listings already available and I’m quite excited about those too. These pages show the neoprene reduction print of the Everyman Liverpool, a quantum halo not yet listed, the Tempest for Joel’s Book, which became a version of into a poster for his book launch, (and was the first sale overseas to someone I didn’t know already and the four panel print of Bradda Head in the Isle of Man. #sketchbookdrawing #sketchbook #archive #printmakersofinstagram #printmaking #etsy #etsyshop #collagraph #neopreneprinted #reductionprint #everymantheatre #liverpoolhopestreet #linocut #linoprint #intaglioprint #intaglio #collagraph #thetempest #shakespeare #ariel #landscape #braddahead #isleofman #manx (at Minster Court) https://www.instagram.com/p/CeL0ZoMsUqT/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Confused. I saw Dan and Phil and Martyn and Cornelia on the Coronation footpath up to Bradda Head/Milner’s Tower. Why is everyone making up stories about Dan?
look i know dan’s ‘exercising’ now but this is just unrealistic
where have you seen dan?

PORT ERIN
Port Erin (Manx: Purt Çhiarn, meaning lord's port) is a seaside village in the south-west of the Isle of Man, in the historic parish of Rushen. It was previously a seaside resort before the decline of the tourist trade. Administratively it is designated as a village district, with its own board of commissioners. The district covers around 1 square mile, and is adjacent to: Port St Mary to the south-east; the main part of Arbory and Rushen parish district to the north and east; the sea to the west; and an exclave of Arbory and Rushen parish district (including the village of Cregneash) to the south. Following recent residential expansion, the settlement is now contiguous with that of Port St Mary, and on 18 July 2018 Tynwald authorised a public enquiry into the proposed expansion of the district boundary to include some of this expansion.
Landmarks
Fish Hatchery, a building (formerly a fish hatchery) in the outer harbour close to the wrecked breakwater. This was home to a University of Liverpool Marine Biology department which closed in 2006.
Milner's Tower, a distinctive key-shaped building that stands on top of Bradda Head, a memorial to a locksmith, only reachable on foot. It features on the village's crest and coat of arms.
Railway Museum, in the centre of the village and housed in the former bus garage of Isle of Man Road Services; open seasonally whenever the railway is in operation and accessible via the main road.
Museum Building, originally constructed as a cinema but more recently used as office space and retail accommodation.
Erin Arts Centre in a converted church on Victoria Square. The building is host to annual musical competitions and often to other events; it is one of several small centres for the arts on the island.
Railway station in the centre of the village and built of distinctive red Ruabon brick. Open seasonally; winner of an Ian Allan Heritage Award in 1991.
Herdman House, now a private residence but built as the village's public library and gaming room, it at one time included a billiard hall and extensive library section before conversion to its present use.
Collinson's Cafe, an unusual building which is currently[when?] empty; it has several unusual architectural features including a rotunda and a large sprung dance floor from its time as a dance hall. It is above the promenade on the road leading to the golf course.
Lifeboat Station, on the south side of Port Erin Bay. Extended in recent years, it retains its slipway and deco architectural style, and is open to the public when manned.
Police Station, closed in 2014. The closest manned police station is in Castletown. A public desk is located here.
White Cottage, or Christians Cottage, was built by the Christian family on Shore Road in 1781. Above the door is a plaque that says: "Edmund and Margaret Christian, 1781". The Christian family still own the cottage today and it remains the oldest building in the village.

This is the final set from the Book of Learning volume two. It opens with an artist’s proof of the four panel Lino cut of Bradda Head for Mari (who had generously donated to support our Patreon for Liverpool Independent Art School at the start of lockdown. When it came to making a video of how to cut Lino for our patrons I needed subject matter so decided on this view from her house so she could have a personalised thank you for helping us. Being that it was specifically from her house I didn’t expect other people to like it that much but this image is actually currently my most sold image on my Etsy (so landscape has more potential for further development than I’d imagined). Next is the shellacked plate for the only workshop we managed since February during lockdown. It was a two dayer and was hosted by the excellent @bridewellstudiosliverpool who went out of their way to make a safe and clean space for our artists. Next is the prints from this and a photo of the plate also stuck in. Next is the label of the excellent bespoke beer made for my pandemic 50th birthday by @y4ck referencing that print. The following day I’d made a different drypoint view of the Bridewell and the final plate is a test print in carborundum over gold spray paint revisiting my old idea of freeform floating quantum halos #sketchbook #braddahead #linocut #printmakersofinstagram #printmaking #manx #isleofman #landscape #etsysellersofinstagram #etsyshop #workshop #samples #collagraph #collagraphprint #intaglio #drypoint #drypointetching #carborundum #carborundumprint #halo #quantumsingularity #texture #akuainks (at Minster Court) https://www.instagram.com/p/CX3ocSUsij1/?utm_medium=tumblr

THE LAXEY WHEEL
This is the largest working waterwheel in the world, it is designed by Robert casement.
measurements, 72 foot 6 inch diameter , 6 feet wide.
the wheel is a great example of victorian engeering she was built in 1854 to pump water from laxer mines.
the great laxer mines was a silver, lead ore and zinc mine located in laxer, in the parish of Lonan, Isle of Man. the mine reached depth in excess of 2,200 ft (670m) and conceited primarily of three shafts; the welsh shaft, the dumbells shaft and the engine shaft; each of these shafts was connected by a series of levels.
the Isle of Man contains a large variety of minerals. copper ore was mined at bradda head as far back as 13th century, Harald, king of Mann (1237-1248) having granted a charter under which monks of furness abbey obtained working rights for this mine.
later in the same century the earl of Buchan received a license from king Edward I to dig for lead on the calf of man, and when the Isle of Man was granted for sir John Stanley by king Henry IV in 1406.
in 1700 almost 230 tons of copper ore was shipped from the dhyranne mine at maughold whilst also at this time the rushen and Kirk Arbory mines were producing significant quantities of copper ore.
there is no exact date for the start of mining at laxer. however by 1782 workings were being opened, with the undertaking chiefly as an enterprise from Cumberland as opposed to the Isle of Man.
19th century...
laxer was primarily mined for its lead ore. However, in addition the mine yielded zinc, silver, copper pyrites and hematite iron in significant quantities. In 1819 both laxer and foxdale mines were closed, but within four years both reopened. laxer owed its fresh start to Westmorland man who was in turn licensed for the undertaking by George Murray, 6th duke of atholl. Both mines soon began to boom, with a result that search for metals began in every part of the island, but with almost no result.
