My track by track first impressions for Unreal Unearth (with some contextualized thoughts of the singles)
De Selby Part 1 - straight into the lullabies playlist. Just perfect.
De Selby Part 2 - perfect fade in from Part 1. I couldn't have dreamt up a better, more subtle transition. Still my current creature comfort.
First Time - oh, ffs, it's bluesy and sad. Lethal combination. This might be another one on repeat later. Ow. Ouch, ow. THE FINAL TIME YOU CALLED ME "BABY". Wtf. I see why some of y'all were cussing him out on here.
Francesca - my beloved. Brutal to have this follow First Time, though. Mentally two-stepping through the tears. The bellowing at the outro still has the power to ascend me despite my replaying.
I,Carrion - another certified heartbreaker for the lullabies playlist. She's Greek, she's cosmic, she's pure love.
Eat Your Young - I am once again solidified in my conviction to refuse having children in this fucked up world. Y'all be safe.
Damage Gets Done (feat. Brandi Carlile) - Okay guitar lick! Oh the voices belting together in harmony is hitting me. I'm getting really 2010s feelings I haven't felt in forever. I feel the sudden urge to forgive myself. He's back at it again with the choral work, CAN I LIVE??
Who We Are - and just like that, I'm back on my emo shit. He really went for emotional whiplash in terms of song ordering, huh? Not me literally listening to this while engulfed in a dark room as well. Another one I'll have to repeat, I fear.
Son of Nyx - oh fuck. Oh no. Not the piano dragging along. And no words. THE CUTOFF. THE STRINGS. THE VOCALIZATIONS. It's definitely a warning. Shit's about to start hurting for real. It's so haunting and gorgeous.
All Things End - Hello, old friend, my first favorite. I'm terrified of what follows you. It was bad enough watching the man "die" on the table (my hands are in the air to receive the gospel).
To Someone From A Warm Climate (Uiscefhuarithe) - fucking hell. Just devastating. Idk how much more I can take.
Butchered Tongue - this hits like crazy if you have any connection to a diaspora that was nearly erased or just have ancestry DEEPLY rooted oppression and the like. Ffs, I'm gonna need stitches for a cut that deep.
Anything But - and then this happy shit. Back at it again with the whiplash, the bastard. I love it though! This is going on the light and bright playlist. I'm a sucker for sad lyrics dressed in bright colors. And the vocals?? Come on, now.
Abstract (Psychopomp) - I was right. Everything following Son of Nyx just hurts differently. Dare I say worse than the first half of the album. I really shouldn't get into how I relate OFTEN to the poor roadkill creatures in my area.
Unknown/Nth - a nice and plentiful helping of stake through the heart, as usual. The briiidge. I drown in it every time.
First Light - I'm gonna say it's an instant classic. The imagery. The love on love on love. The catharsis. The drumsss. Oh! The acoustic fade out.
Overall, he didn't bother not once to lift his heel on this album. He's outdone himself. No skips. I am foaming at the mouth, waiting for my vinyl to come in. All get 10s across the board from me. 16 works of art. I really wish I could lock myself in a room for three days to really digest this album.

I just listened to Hozier's album Unreal Unearth and I'm gonna explode. Holy shit what an amazing album and what an incredible artist. Here are my first impressions I got from each song.
De Selby (Part 1) - Very pretty. A beautiful song to start this album. A wonderful taste of what's to come
De Selby (Part2) - FUNKY! I'll be taking this and I will be listening to it on repeat til I'm sick of it or dead. Whichever comes first (probably death tbh).
First Time - Just a simple love song (I'm lying). It doesn't really speak to me on any kind of existential level (still lying).
Francesca - What a lovely sonG OH HOLY SHIT- (Also the ending portion of this song is heavenly, pun intended)
I, Carrion (Icarian) - I could only think about Crowley and Aziraphale when this song came on. It fits them SOOO well! Anyways, gorgeous song!
Eat Your Young - The sound of this song is so awesome and sexy for a song that uses a clever parallel to Chronos to keep the Greek mythology theme to make it about sacrificing the next generation for money and power. I live for it.
Damage Gets Done - Hozier and Brandi Carlile's voices are so pretty together. This song sounds like running through a flower filled field with someone you want to be buried next to.
Who we are - This song speaks for itself and what it has to say is beautiful and painful as shit. I love this song.
Son of Nyx - The animated masterpiece that I made in my head to this song was incredible.
All Things End - "If there was anyone to ever get through this life with their heart still intact, they didn't do it right." GODAMN SO TRUE! This song is so nice. Accepting that everything will end while still keeping hope that we'll begin again UGH! I LOVE IT!
To Someone From A Warm Climate (Uiscefhuaraithe) - Beautiful. Incredible. I'm speechless. I also cannot believe that word is pronounced that way.
Butchered Tongue - This reads to me like a poetic love letter to language, music, and to Hozier's hometown. It goes over his personal experience with growing up in his hometown and appreciating it even more as he experiences other places and recognizes even more how it has affected him. That's what I got at least. Lovely song ofc.
Anything But - If the previous song was about the love of things that make us human and connect us like language, this song is about the feeling of wanting to be anything but human or, better yet, nothing at all. So cool. I love this man.
Abstract (Psychopomp) - When I listened to this song for the first time, I didn't really pay attention to the lyrics. I still teared up. I still haven't really looked at the lyrics and I'm still emotional about it. I love music. I love life. I love that I get to experience this with my ears. I love that I can appreciate it and understand it. GOD THIS ALBUM IS SO GOOOOD!!!
Unknown/Nth - This song with a math reference in the title makes me lose my mind in the best way. "Do you know I could break beneath the weight of the goodness, love, I still carry for you that I'd walk so far just to take the injury of finally knowing you." That might just be the most emotional line I've ever heard in my life jfc.
First Light - The melodies he is singing in this song do something to me. I ascend every time that pre chorus/chorus comes in. LIKE DAMN, IF I BREATHED IN THIS SONG, I WOULD SEE INFINITY!
I need to study the lyrics of all of these songs in an academic manner soon. I could only dream of the artistry that Hozier achieved here. This album will probably change my life.

Hozier @ The Anthem (DC), 9/27/23
Tumblr media
Madison Cunningham was the perfect opener, the best I've seen in the couple dozen concerts I've been to. Her voice was astonishing live, quite a range with a haunting quality. She had a 3-piece band, more of a rock sound than the acoustic tracks of her earlier work.
ALL LINKS OPEN TO VIDEOS
De Selby pt 1 - the first song of the night. The crowd did a good job keeping quiet during the gentle opener, and then we went right into De Selby pt 2.
Tumblr media
Cherry Wine - the ground floor started cheering in the middle and Hozier got flustered.
Uiscefhuaraithe - Hozier did a little explainer before the song.
Damage Gets Done - a duet with Kristen Rogers, one of his backup singers for the tour. Glad to see it played even without Brandi Carlile there.
Almost - always a favorite of mine, but this show they had a long jam session in the middle, featuring solos from different musicians! Also, the video was showing the title of different vinyl records mentioned, to sync with the lyrics.
First Light - glad to hear it, but the placement could have been better? This was one of my highlights from the album, the hopeful ending. I love to do yoga to this song, especially in the sunshine.
The setlist for this night skipped many of the sadder songs - no Icarion, Butchered Tongue, or Who We Are (and Unknown came later). This suited me fine to have a more upbeat concert, but then First Light didn't feel quite "earned."
Take me to Church - the finale. The crowd passed up a pride flag saying "Protect Trans Kids," which he hung on the mike stand and then walked right up to the crowd. Everyone surged toward him trying to touch him, some pressing flowers, bracelets and other gifts upon him. Felt a bit Pentecostal.
Nina Cried Power - the first encore song after a short break, the crowd kept that energy going. Hozier did a little explainer and duetted with Melissa McMillan, his other touring backup singer.
Unknown - the next encore song, followed by singing Happy Birthday to tour musician Ryan Connor.
Work Song - the final encore, plus a surprised duet with opener Madison Cunningham.
So that was THREE encores and THREE duets. Shoutout to the venue as well. I arrived about an hour after doors and went straight to the top floor of the GA area. View and sound were good, plenty of personal space up there, able to sit between sets and pee without losing your spot, pleasantly strong AC, short bathroom line, chill neighbors - ideal for the over 35 crowd.
Tumblr media
Over all, the May pop-up show was a better fangirl experience: smaller venue = better view, the long time since the last tour, the chance to meet and great.
But the Unreal Unearth tour was the better concert - bigger stage, more intricate lighting design, the band was more practiced/experimental with the new music, amazing crowd energy.
