Breaking Up With the Wind

Summer wind hold my hand,grasp it, rub it gentle in the sunhoneyed soothing mother’s touch. The monster spurted a mouthful of water over the Tang Priest and shouted "Change!" Sanzang's real body was hidden away and he was turned into a striped tiger to their mortal eyes. All fled in terror except a handful of gallant generals who charged the tiger, hacking wildly with every kind of weapon. After a turmoil that continued until evening they finally caught the tiger, chained it, and put it in an iron cage.

Can we talk about chapter 60? I'd like to talk about chapter 60: A Place I Belong.

I specifically want to talk about the sections with the tightrope. It's one of my favorite parts of Wind Breaker and I could praise it for ages. I know it's a kind of common metaphor for struggles and isn't anything too special, but I really do adore it.

And whoever decided to add that anime only scene to the start of the first episode? Absolute genius and I love them for it. It works beautifully without it in the manga, but I think it's going to add a little extra something to the anime!

But for the tightrope section in the manga? It's so good and so well executed!! I absolutely love the way the style changes throughout the chapter!!

We start with white lineart on a black background. The lines are messy, sketchy, and even the boxes don't have clean lines.

I also want to point out how the only clean lines we get from this section are from the adults in his life, as well as the wind chime and the sprout pushing out from the ground.

The wind chime and the sprout clearly allude to Furin and the way both Furin and the rest of the town have shown that he, too, can be loved and accepted as he is.

The wind chime is also the thing that seems to be the transition to Sakura going from walking along the tightrope to considering that there might be another path for him.

I'm going to be real here and say that I don't have a lot to say about the other adults also having clean lineart. I'm sure there's someone out there who'd have something really smart to say about it, though. If I were to say something about it, it'd be that I think it might represent his shaky sense of self, compared to other people who have it figured out.

After that we get to the middle section, with Sakura in the "real world" again and with the rest of the class. I won't focus on the dialogue itself too much, but I'd like to talk about the way we go between the tightrope and reality.

I really like how the panels with the tightrope are woven in. They show us what's going on inside his head while also showing us how it looks like in reality. We see visual representation of how this feels like to him.

It's shown in how before he speaks, as he's gathering the courage for it, we can see him changing his stance on the rope. We get shown the way this is him preparing for that leap. He also mirrors himself with the way he's clenching his hands both in reality and around the tightrope.

A little later, as he's talking, we can see him directly mirror himself in both realities.

We see the way he's holding on preparing for that leap, as well as the way his face is split in two here. It doesn't directly match up, but it doesn't have to, because it already works so well here. I'd maybe even argue that I prefer it this way around as opposed to if this was a direct split of his face.

And then we see the leap itself, the way he throws himself into the unknown.

And then he gets called out on his bullshit, gets told that he's insane for thinking they'd cast him out. That they love him as he is and that they want him around. They actually want him. For maybe the first time in his life, he's wanted, appreciated, and needed.

And it's just this "Oh." moment for him. You can see the way it just clicks for him.

And after this we get to an absolutely beautiful scene, the part that makes me love this chapter so much.

We see that it all isn't so terrible after all, that there is hope. The tightrope isn't a drop to certain death, just a drop.

The colors have changed and we're now looking at Sakura on a white background with black lineart. Though at this point Sakura himself is the only part of the scene with messy lineart. The field of flowers and grass, as well as the edges of the panels, are all cleanly lined. Except for Sakura. Even if it's still messy, I'd say it's definitely a little cleaner than it was before.

You can see the way he's a little more faint, a little less solid than the rest of the lineart.

And then we see Bofurin, the rest of his class specifically. They're all there and they're all cleanly lined. And as Sakura reaches out to grab the hand he's offered, his lineart becomes clean. His lineart is no longer messy, it's no longer a sketch. This is him finding and accepting himself.

And as he grabs that hand, his clothes also change. Before all he was wearing was a plain shirt with plain pants, nothing remarkable, just plain clothes. But as soon as he takes that hand, his clothes change to a Furin uniform.

This entire chapter is so beautiful and I cannot wait to see it animated. I really hope the anime does it justice. From the lineart to the colors swapping around to the dialogue, it's an amazing chapter overall. I know I didn't really talk about the dialogue, but it's also good :)! I don't have much to say about it, though.

Moral of the story is that I really love this chapter and just wrote around 900 words about it.

found an artist on twitter who draws suo as hualian’s child and it’s so perfect. i’m adopting it into my personal canon. when asked about his parents he’s always 100% honest “well one of mg dads is the prince of an ancient chinese kingdom who turned into a god and my other dad is a citizen of that same kingdom turned into a ghost lord of the underworld” and people just wonder why his story is so specific and why his fake parents are gay

early into their relationship sakura is like “suo you know you’re weird as hell right” and suo is like “well my dad pined after my other dad for 1000 years and fought to become a lord of the underworld so he could finally be with my other dad again and that same other dad keeps going on about how hot he found all of that whenever he has too many glasses of wine. so it could be worse!” and sakura’s just like WHAT?

sakura finally meets suo’s parents and is in fact still convinced they’re a regular chinese gay married couple and is too dense to notice how young they look for having a teenage son. suo’s eye still isn’t an ancient chinese spirit though

Quick reminder that the first three (3) things that we see Trish Una do the second she steps on screen are

1. Hold Narancia at knife point bc he was threatening her (did not hesitate)

2. Force/scare Fugo into letting her use his jacket as a goddamn towel (did not hesitate)

3 Gave these unshowered gang members a list of things she needed bought, including designer blush and nylons (did not hesitate)

This happened rapid fire. We see Trish, someone she doesn’t know pulls a knife on her, she holds it to their throat. After this she goes to change into her real clothes, and needs a towel. She makes Fugo take off his shirt to use as a towel and he’s so stunned that he doesn’t even get angry until she does the next thing, which is giving them her to do list.

She is a Diva. She is a traumatized teenage girl. She is a Future Popstar. She is an Icon. She is Trish Una.

Jaiden: And then the other one is like... more silly, and goofy. I think that was the one who played like, Hide-and-Seek with us, and they did more fun games, and that's the other one.

Jaiden: And I– they said that he's not perfect, and I need to train him to be perfect.

Foolish: So you need to– wipe him of personality? [He speaks with a laugh]

Jaiden: Yeah. I– though– I mean, the thing I told him is just to hide it, you know? That's... the best way to do it.

I feel quite mean when I say that I want Lift to feel very guilty about what happened to Gavinor. Because that’s putting an unproportional amount of blame on her

But I really do wish that she does. Her actions during day two where irresponsible and childish to a degree that she is way too old to be able to excuse. And unlike most other instances of Lifts funny shenanigans of refusing to do what she is told, this time it had severe life altering consequences that can never be fixed

And I really hope that this is the turning point for her of finally accepting change and growing up to a degree. Because wether you like it or not, when you’re not the youngest, when there is someone looking up to you and you let yourself be in that position. You have a responsibility to a degree and can’t just run off and break the rules whoever you want or give dangerous advice

Togame Jo would catch a whiff of you coming down with sickness before it can fully hit So quickly (or if you were on the brink off coming down with a mood swing or a drop in your mood/emotional well being) and be by your side with a warm bowl of soup, fresh out of the oven bread that you love (and goes perfectly with the said soup), and a mini stash of your favorite snacks, treats and flavor of ramune (which he will reveal to you later, after you’ve had your soup, got your belly full and no longer hungry nor dehydrated.)

Won’t push your buttons nor pry but be by your side as much as he can throughout the day, even if it’s just the two of you lying on your bed in silence, next to each other. Be there distance or not, he’ll wait for you to gather your strength and a sense of yourself back, for your foot to slowly find his and gently bump into his leg to get his attention.

A silent “im here, i see you and what you’ve done for me, fully aware and back in earth” and take it as his signal to wrap an arm around, pull you close to his chest, warm and snug. Allowing his presence to surround you whole, and he smells just like home.

Louis' "You're boring!" Could mean so many things, but I think what's most apparent about that line is that Armand takes no initiative just for himself. He's not really anybody, because he never goes out and finds himself or gets attached to anyone but Louis. Without Louis as his guide he's literally just sitting on a couch picking lint! That's the thing.

He orbits constantly around what would make Louis happy, and never really fully going what would make me happy? Ultimately that drive to please Louis is what drives him to torturing Daniel, not so much that he'd care to just do it. Ultimately, not giving proper care to Louis is just a way to make sure Louis knows he has to orbit around him as well, with shoving Lestat onto him just that other nail on the coffin. So, even if he fails to figure out how to make Louis happy with him, he still knows what Armand is good for, and better than.

That dependency is what drives Armand's abuse. It really just comes down to that. Armand doesn't even realize how suffocated he is by his own dependency. This is just how life is to him. (It shouldn't be lost either that dependency is a theme considering this episode also deals with addiction).

Daniel's fascinating because he's just so driven to be somebody. He's largely independent, he seeks things because he wants them. It's his drug to poke and prod at all the things that he shouldn't. Daniel's exciting because he lets Louis in to something different, lets him in to all this potential in another person that he can also do the same with for himself. It's a real connection. A two way street. It's easy to tell how Armand can be smothering then because he's never introducing him to anything really new, and most the ways both of them connect are all painful and traumatic. It's never just fun because there's always that layer of that pain. Fun died with Claudia.

50 years on they've gotten to a lot better place, both of them, but it's still that same shit. No seriously, "How is this any different from last time, Louis?"

Well... Because Armand's going to be, at the very least, making one [1] decision only for himself - and that's to hold power over Daniel's life. Fucking sick foreshadowing.

They aren't driving each other to the brink anymore but "The vampire is bored" STILL. Maybe it's even worse, despite being in better places, because Louis' sort of just been defeated by it. (I mean, can he even really leave this either?). He's accepting the dependancy cause he kind of has to. He'd literally ended up letting all the enjoyment be up where he can't reach [The book shelves]. Armand so desperately wants Louis happiness but what really ends up happening is that Louis ends up having to give Armand all his own. He's got no one or anything else to get it from. But like an iPad and an over the top eating ritual. Two extremes of what's just more lint picking.

This whole relationship is one I find just tragic inside and out. You have to just pity it, really. There's ways in which you can find yourself feeling bad for both of them. But you can only really be mad at Armand for any of it. Armand, who isn't even 'free' in any sense, having so little concept of his own independence, but is at the same time so controlling over other's. It's a tragic cycle. It's an infuriating one.

Louis at least has the mind to know when enough is enough. If just needing that extra push to get there. Armand's too scared of it being over to even try.

harmonious cooperation and fool’s gold are mirror images of drama tracks wherein they are practically the same story beats and flow repurposed. it shows how much bat’s gotten closer, like when kuukou calls his team over for a team meeting, jyushi and hitoya are put out by it in harmonious cooperation but in fool’s gold, they’re much more comfortable with it. arb somehow managed to show them bonding in the exact same way except thru video games and this is me just glazing arb actually lmao i still can’t believe they showed bat’s growth as a team in cyclical writing by taking advantage of their own event cycles 😭😭😭😭
