If there’s one character in Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula as fascinating as the arch vampire himself, it’s R.M. Renfield the zoophagous patient in Dr. Seward’s mental hospital, who has fallen under the vampire’s spell. But Stoker provides no explanation of how Renfield came to be imprisoned, nor of the origins of his strange relationship with his Master.

Marty Ross’s audio drama imagines a whole back story for the character – the story of a tragically ordinary Victorian shopkeeper, stuck looking after ageing parents and prone to a furtive fascination with blood.

Desperate for relief, he goes for a holiday in Whitby, on the Yorkshire Coast, where he experiences premonitions of a vast supernatural power approaching across the sea, a force that will bring meaning to his life, but only of the most terrible sort.

Harry Myers

Harry won the Carleton Hobbs Bursary award in 1998 and has twice been in the BBC Radio Drama Company. Since then he has appeared in hundreds of radio plays & serials for the BBC, including Home Front; and The Archers; and for Big Finish, including playing Adrian Wall in the Bernice Summerfield adventures; & multiple characters in various Dr Who titles.

More recently, Harry has worked on many productions for Audible including the Sam Mendes Dickens Trilogy; The Sandman; and 1984. Notable video game appearances include: Darktide; A Plague Tale: Requiem; Baldur’s Gate 3;World of Warcraft. Harry has narrated numerous audiobooks and voices several trailers & commercials. He has also worked extensively in theatre, TV and film, although these days his main focus is his voice work.

Sarah Whitehouse

Sarah trained at the Birmingham Conservatoire graduating with 1st Class Honours. Notable work includes feature films Lapwing and Future Soldier and performance capture and voices for video game ‘Norse’ to be released on Xbox and PlayStation in 2026. Sarah has worked extensively in audio drama including Sam Mendes’ Dickens trilogy for Amazon Audible, all adapted by Marty Ross: Oliver Twist starring Daniel Kaluuya and Brian Cox, David Copperfield, starring Ncuti Gatwa and Helena Bonham Carter and Bleak House starring Ambika Mod, Miriam Margolyes and Thandiwe Newton.

Other projects with Audible include: 1984, The Sandman Acts III/IV and V, Halfway, Crush Hour, We Play Games, Billionaire for Sale and Jeff Wayne’s War of The Worlds. Sarah has just recorded her first Doctor Who story with Big Finish productions and The Rebel Moon audio series for Netflix/Wolf at the Door.

Because I only listen to the 60s station, "Sealed with a kiss" by Brian Hyland is a Jonathan in the Castle song, and "See you in September" is an Arthur wishing Lucy off on her Whitby holiday song

Oh, I love a lot of 60s music! These names look vaguely familiar, but I don't immediately recognize them. Let's see...

OHH, I love 'Sealed With A Kiss'! If we think of this as something fitting to him during/throughout the castle stay, then it shifts from anticipatory melancholy to a kind of miserable hope spoken aloud even as he loses his belief in any such reunion as he speaks of being possible. Except then they do "meet in September" (well, okay, late August, still though) and Mina literally seals his diary with her wedding ring with is totally equivalent to the kiss, making "pledges" to each other during the wedding and about the diary. The lines right before, too: "I'll see you in the sunlight / hear your voice everywhere / I'll run to tenderly hold you / but darling, you won't be there!" those feel like they could fit in really well with not only him thinking of her, but also doubting his own sanity and maybe even some dreams or sleep-deprived daydreams/hallucinations at some point late in his stay or after his escape.

This entire song is perfect for Jonathan in the Castle, thank you so much for sending it to me. But my absolute favorite part is "I'll send you my love / every day in a letter / sealed with a kiss" and how that redefines his diary as a love letter to Mina, which is so perfect for his intent for her to have it, the way the thought of her sustains him, and also how he gives it to her later as a gesture of love and trust. And then she seals it with her wedding ring! Again, it's perfect. Also just a great song, saving this for sure.

On to your next song rec! Not sure if you meant the version by The Happenings, since that was apparently the biggest one in the 60s. But I went and listened to the original version by The Tempos as well, and I personally prefer that one.

I love the delivery of "here we are / saying goodbye at the station / summer vacation / is taking you away" it feels very Arthur to me somehow. This is super sweet. Obviously the "lose you to a summer love" isn't exactly something that he's fearing in canon, but it fits too well with what actually is going to (begin to) happen on her vacation. Not the love part duh but, that's obviously when Dracula begins to visit, and the bites=kisses stuff etc. Also on that track, the line "have a good time, but remember / there is danger / in the summer moon above" is so on the nose I can't believe it.

This whole song if I'm thinking of Art saying it feel so sweet and jokey, like him and Lucy being playful about their brief separation while they look eagerly forward to their wedding in September. And it makes me so so sad for what happens instead.

"[King Charles] was speaking at the Animal Ball, a gala event to support the Elephant Family charity founded by Queen Camilla’s late brother Mark Shand.

This year’s masked ball, held in the gardens at Lancaster House, central London, was billed as a celebration of indigenous communities and included life-sized elephant sculptures as a backdrop.

NYC December 2023 - Part 1

[Updated to cover seven nights, December 19-25]

My winter music safari took me from New Orleans to Laguardia on Tuesday, December 19. I arrived at Mona's just a bit after the jam started. Here's the video - credit Dennis Lichtman. Fast forward to the music, 9 minutes:

On Wednesday night I had the amazing good fortune to catch both sets at Smoke. From L to R, the band was Emmet Cohen, Jon Webber, the great George Coleman, Joe Farnsworth and Peter Bernstein.

In the first set, my seat was right by Joe Farnsworth's left elbow.

I definitely have a better understanding of jazz drumming than I used to have. And I got some great shots from that angle.

I had a better view for the second set.

This was probably my best photo of the night.

The music was bebop, not quite in my sweet spot. But it was absolutely delightful. Each of these guys is a master craftsman and inspired artist.

On Thursday, I ventured out to far Red Hook, to Sunny's Bar to hear Samoa Wilson sing. To my pleasant surprise, she was backed by Michaela Gomez, who I have not seen since before the pandemic, on guitar, and Brian Nalepka on bass.

Michaela's guitar work was strong. Samoa's singing was a perfect match for the jazz standards she sang.

On Friday night, I went to hear Jeanne Geis at Frankie and Johnny's on 37th. Her band consisted of Joe Cohn (guitar), with Mark Lewandowski (bass) and Paul Bollenback (guitar).

Joe Cohn is the father of Shaye Cohn from Tuba Skinny.

I had not seen Jeanne in many years.

I hadn't seen her in many years. Listening to an old friend sing, sitting on the corner of the bar, chatting with a few other friendly jazz fans. It felt familiar and comfortable.

On Saturday night, I went to hear Tatiana Eva-Marie at The Whitby Hotel on 56th Street. She was flawlessly accompanied by Paul Sikivie on Bass and Felix Lemerle on guitar.

Sunday,December 24 began with a trip downtown to hear Tamar Korn's brunch gig at the Temple Court. It's not a temple or a court. It's a hotel, with a delicious, expensive brunch.

The band, L to R, is Sam Chess (trombone), Jared Engel (bass) and Josh Dunn (guitar). The music was stunningly well-executed. Tamar's version of "Do the New York," which is usually kickass, was restrained by the genteel surroundings.

The usual Sunday evening jam at The Ear was typically excellent.

That's Tal Ronen (bass), Jay Rattman (sax), Chris Flory (guitar) and Jon Erik Kellso (trumpet).

Neal and his friends, Dr. Janet Sora Chung and Joe Jones (bassoon, not drums) enjoyed the show.

Musician friends Brennen Ernst and Jen Hodge were at the bar . . .

. . . until Maestro Kellso invited them to play a few tuned. They both leaned in with serious energy.

In the foreground, that's Phillup Debucket - a major supporter of the band. Phillup eagerly accepted my input.

On Christmas Day, Monday, December 25, Neal Siegal and I got the best seats in the house for Tamar's reprise Temple Court gig. It was a new lineup.

That's Tal Ronen (bass), Tomas Majcherski (tenor, clarinet), Jared Engel (4-string, 3-cone, resophonic not-a-banjo), and Tamar, vocals.

I never heard Tomas Majcherski play before. His playing was delightful and deep.

Tamar's singing seems to capture the rapt attention of the youngest listeners. I've seen it before. Now I've got a photo:

Neal and I spent the entire rest of the day looking for the great music, but a strange hush had descended on New York . . .
