this was not on the agenda but let's analyze some of the dialogue in 4x03 real fast

Stiles: Dude, what is going on with you? Scott: I don't know. I'm having a really off day. Stiles: Off day? You were dying out there! I feel actual physical pain watching you. Scott: I didn't see you make any shots. Stiles: Yes, that is because I'm terrible, though, Scott. You... You are the Alpha. Scott: Not on the field. I'm a human on the field. Stiles: Well, human you is kind of sucking at the moment. So do you think there is any way you can use just like a little tiny bit of wolf power? Scott: It's cheating. Stiles: I know it is! It's just I hate seeing this little freshman come in and steal all your glory after you worked your tushie off. I hate it. Scott: He's not going to steal all the glory. ----- Stiles: We still don't know if he's a werewolf, too. And if he is, he'd just be cheating. And we'd just be cheating the cheater. Scott: But he's not. I'd know. I'd be able to catch a scent or something. Stiles: Maybe you need to get closer. Scott: I think I'm about to get my chance.

So this takes place during the lacrosse tryouts. First thing to note, is it me or is Stiles playing devil's advocate more than usual? It might just be because Scott's listening to him more than usual but Stiles seems unusually persistent

Anyways, that first bit caught my attention because i'm always hyperaware when regarding the human/monster theme in teen wolf. Scott's firmly continues to maintain the boundary between his werewolf and human sides while Stiles vagues around the idea of "true alpha has to mean infallible" that later plays such a huge role in their s5 fight. It's interesting that he's telling Scott that it's unsightly for the Alpha to lose here and then pivots literally minutes later into assuring him that "[he's] still only human". Stiles is ever so quick to turn to whatever will benefit him in the moment.

Like, really look at that first exchange for a second. First Stiles tries concern which Scott brushes off. Then Stiles becomes more overtly critical but it's aggressive enough that Scott takes a shot back at him to which Stiles immediately tries to pacify him via self-depreciation/flattery. And when Scott rejects that, he tries to compromise- you don't have to go all out alpha werewolf, just a little bit's enough-and when it fails, changes to a commiserating sympathy, which with a little bit of well-timed remarks by Finstock, surprisingly does somewhat work. And Stiles immediately capitalizes when he feels Scott wavering by justifying the behavior and then re-framing it via 'if you just get close to scent him, it's not reallyyy using your powers, right'.

Scott's what is most interesting about this exchange though. Their entire conversation has a practiced air to it, as if Stiles suggesting things that Scott shoots down is a common enough occurance that Scott doesn't even need to really think about his responses, which is probably true. The convo actually reminded me a little of their first conversation in 1x01 when Stiles and Scott goes off in search for Laura's body and Scott's protesting even as he follows. The difference is that since their power dynamics have shifted (at first with Scott becoming a werewolf and then again when he becomes a True Alpha), Scott's been far less likely to grudgingly go along with Stile's schemes but he does so here, despite being against it.

This is where I dip into speculation but I think that the reason Scott's behaving so unusually is because the events of 3b-caught unawares by the nogitsune, aiden's death,allison bleeding out in his arms,isaac leaving- has made Scott less sure of his own judgement coming into s4 becuse he actually does something similar to this in 4x02 too where when Stiles initially suggests lying to Derek, Scott firmly rejects it but when the opportunity arises, he hesitates and then ends up lying to him in a move that even Stiles is surprised by. (the camera intentionally pans to stiles side eying scott and i can't help but wonder if that has anything to do with how persistent he is here)

I do! I just didn't have the mind to write long posts lately, so sorry this took a while. Thanks for asking about Mahito!

Sexuality Headcanon:

Pain. As long as someone is in pain, either him or ideally the other person, he's gonna be attracted to it. That's pretty much the only criteria that matters to him. Wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't even have much of a concept of gender, much less differentiates people based on it. If he can make them scream and if they can maybe even fight back a bit, he'll be horny.

Gender Headcanon:

Like I said above, I think he doesn't much care about gender. He prefers a humanoid masculine appearance, but I think if he has any gender it's as malleable as his appearance. His genitals or if he has any or not also changes based on his mood. It seems like most of the time when he's naked there is something between his legs that needs censoring (in the same way Takaba's dick gets censored), but that can change any time.

A ship I have with said character:

Mostly MahiKen. Can't resist mutual vore. But I've been having an eye on Mahito/Yuuji as well since S2 came out. I just like the pure hatred Mahito pulls out of Yuuji and how he makes him go almost manic, but also cold and ruthless. He shows us a very different side of Yuuji and makes him indulge in his darker impulses. At the same time I love how Yuuji can meaningfully hurt Mahito and legitimately make him shit his pants. This equal push and pull between them is really nice.

A BROTP I have with said character:

Pretty much him and the Curse Family. Couldn't pick only one of them, I love the whole group. They just wanted to have fun and be happy together *sigh* It is a bit questionable how much Mahito cares about them (they definitely care about him), but I think they are the closest to friends he has and he would've been the only one of them to survive, he would've missed them. They show us that curses can have positive emotions and form deep bonds as well.

A NOTP I have with said character:

Mahito/Nanami. I don't find Nanami is all that interesting and I especially don't like the way I see people ship this. They turn it from a fucked up and kind of interesting dynamic into strong macho business man/manic pixie dream girl. They really seem to want to make this as straight and bland as possible. Mahito gets that treatment a lot in ships for some reason. It removes his most unique aspects and what makes him so fun in ships.

A random headcanon:

I've seen a fanart I really like of Mahito playing with a child and then turning it into a transfigured human when lifting it in the air. I think he did something similar to the kids and maybe also adults at the playground where the curse family and Kenjaku hung out. Kenjaku would probably be a party-pooper and say not to make a scene, but Mahito would still somehow manage to cause chaos.

General Opinion over said character:

Love him. My favourite jjk villain after Kenjaku. I used to really hate him while reading the manga and especially Shibuya Incident for the first time, but I've come to really like him. His abilities are fantastic too and brought some great horror to the series that I'm honestly missing a bit at the moment. I think his ability to make the fanbase hate him this much also shows how well he serves his purpose. It can be a bit exhausting as a fan, but at least people are most of the time acknowledging how well-written he is.

If you're still doing the character asks, how about the Donkey from The Town Musicians of Bremen?

I'm always ready to do character asks.

Favorite thing about them: He's a plucky, likable underdog, who takes a bad situation, having to leave his home because he's too old to work anymore and his master wants to kill him, and makes the best of it. Not only by setting an ambitious goal for himself of starting a new life as a musician, but by inviting three other aging, threatened animals to come along, and forming a found family with them that proves more important than the goal in the end.

Least favorite thing about them: Hmm... Maybe the fact that he and his friends scare the band of robbers away from their house when the robbers have done nothing to provoke them, just because they want the house and food for themselves. The mere fact that the men are robbers is the only thing that justifies it. I think The Muppet Musicians of Bremen (which I only just watched for the first time) made a good choice by having the robbers also be the animals' abusive former masters, so it serves as appropriate payback.

Favorite Thing About Them

Jared is so bad at communicating he reminds me a lot of myself. I have ODD so it’s a little different, but the man is an asshole in the best way possible. He is petty and gives off angry cat energy in both fandom aspects and canon. Also I appreciate that he never acted against Evan even when he had the opportunity and reason to do so, he threatened it but he kept his mouth shut. Real friend right there <3 (I could tell everyone everything! Okay great! You go ahead! Do that! Tell everyone how you helped write emails pretending to be a kid who killed himself! Fuck you Evan!)

Least Favorite Thing About Them

He doesn’t have enough screen time/show time. People mischaracterize him because his entire character is shoved into as little time as possible. I know I just said that I love how he’s an asshole but he’s more than an asshole. He’s so clearly lonely and more than just an angry kid. At least in the book they made him “hot” in the end but the show and movie pretty much get rid of him come act two

Unpopular Opinion

Idk if this is unpopular or not but I’m glad they cut Goin’ Viral. It only pushes the he’s an asshole idea and even though I love the song it wouldn’t have helped his characterization. I would have liked for them to properly record the song when they released the deluxe album but apparently Disappear Pt. 2: the duet version was more important.

Also Jared Goldsmith was my favorite Jared actor other than Will Roland. Nothing can beat the Will Roland vibes

Book Jared shouldn’t have ditched his glasses and got buff, they made him too powerful. Evan couldn’t help but fall for him. Let him stay as he is don’t make him conventionally attractive!

Favorite thing about them: HE JUST SO CUTE! I'm a sucker for characters who appear one way but then completely take you off guard. Robin looks like your typical grunting simple caveman but then reveals himself to be the kindest, wisest, most mentally tortured character in the show. Add to that he's basically a human pupper. My previous blorbos (Thirteen, Arthur Morgan, Spike) have all had "Kitty!" vibes but Robin is pure Pupper.

Least favorting thing about them: That he didn't get to move on. :( The show was really playing into how desperately he wanted to go by the end. I was even certain that as soon as he felt "Christmassy" he would get to leave but it didn't happen. Let him rest! Also the incest...Just ew.

Random headcanon: His whole going mad thing from the book is still an ongoing problem. He has more coping mechanisms now but still has bad 'spells', some of the ghosts help him through it but others have become so used to him just "being strange" they just ignore him and wait for it to pass like in Not Again.

Unpopular opinion: I think he was a good dad. For the time. For a man who had thirty kids and most of them probably with his sister. The way he talks about the importance of "raising children together, in peace and love" and watches over his animal friends when they have babies, how sweet he was putting Kitty to sleep, he seems to love just being around kids. I dunno if that's unpopular, it just always seems to be Pat or Cap who get talked about when it comes to dads and my boy was over here fathering future generations, as well as putting the work in to raise said kids - but he often gets passed off as too immature or uncaring, like forgetting the whole duality of his character and how he's never as simple as he appears to be. Like sure he probably picked those babies up by their ankles and carried them on his shoulders, but he never dropped them!

favorite thing about them: Just how kind he is. Despite everything, even later under all his trauma and depression, he is still kind.

least favorite thing about them: THAT LACK OF SELF-PRESERVATION. BUDDY I KNOW ITS THE 90s THE STATE OF MENTAL HEALTH IS A PIT, BUT YOU'RE RICH GET A THERAPIST PLEASE.

favorite line: I don't have my darkhorse volumes with me (gathering the new Yen Press Release but only have the first 2 volumes, so this is from volume 2)-- "No one can change the past. No matter how hard we try, time won't reverse. But the future? Only you, Mitsuki-san, can change your future." The "Dream" chapter had a big impact on me when I read it, even if I don't 'agree' with all of the points Subaru makes in that discussion, having him try to center someone on the here and now and reassuring them that they have a choice is powerful. Most of my favorite lines from him are in Tokyo Babylon because I haven't read Tsubasa, and he is more quiet in X.

brOTP: Hokuto-chan. His twin, his sister. ;; Maybe catching up in a what if scenario with him catching up with Hashimoto (the girl who loses her eye, wow the theming!) post-series or even post-X if you imagine all of humanity doesn't die.

OTP: I think at this point its him and Kamui. I'm not saying in that its "better" than him with Seishirou, just that the concept of them interacting based on how they interact in X is more compelling now to me. We never get to see/fully imagine (unless you write fic, which yay! Love that!) Subaru and Seishirou interacting with the full knowledge of who the other is/on an even playing field without The End of Tokyo Babylon. I like everything that is built up and in the end, Subaru did not fall in love with the facade Seishirou put up, but him for him (and then Seishirou never QUITE gets there, so we get -points at X- bozo was too focused on winning The Bet he made with a fucking third grader). SO, back to him and Kamui: they just feel like they get each other in a way no one else seems to, and that adding into the sadness of their bond (understanding but being unable/deciding not to convince the other away from a destructive path). How Subaru tries to be there for Kamui once he officially joins the other Dragons, from speaking with him or helping with homework. Their relationship, if/when we ever get a finale to the manga X (or if you just think about it), feels like the most likely to grow and build into something by the end for me. And hey, both of them have Seishirou and Fuuma as foils/'twin stars', but guess which out of the four get reincarnated as VAMPIRE TWINS in Tsubasa? Subaru and Kamui! Something something soulmates getting reborn together/commentary on Hokuto escaping the wheel of fate but these two boys are still thoroughly In It: but imagining them together makes it feel hopeful. :)

nOTP: Uh, I do not necessarily see him ever being romantically interested in women. So I guess him in a romantic relationship with a woman.

random headcanon: Post-Tokyo Babylon Subaru ends up calling every number in Hokuto's phone book to give away her clothes to friends, but months down the line he gets an unlisted call from the friend she makes in "Smile." They meet up, and Subaru has to tell her what happened, and her trying to smile for him and comfort him, causing him to break down from it, but it also somewhat brings him out of the haze of vengeance he had been in and return to like, eating regularly. Though, after that meeting he also picks up his first pack of cigarettes.

unpopular opinion: Subaru does not naturally come by fashion. He's cute and let Hokuto dress him up. I don't think that's "unpopular," but also by X if the only thing he could wear was something "embarrassing" but not risque, like a mascot uniform or something along those lines--- he would wear it and think nothing of it. Also let my mans be a rope bunny and get to exist in subspace for a bit. Maybe Karen knows an escort from Soapland that can get him into contact with the local BDSM community so he can get out of his head.

7: one way in which I relate to this character- I don't. Janai is far more awesome/kind/smart than I'll ever be.

8: thing that gives me second hand embarrassment about this character - The proposal. Not 'wrestle me'. No I've watched a friend get nervous at comic con and forget how to spell her own name, so forgetting a word in your second language while you're trying to propose isn't something to be embarrassed about. But woman, how could you spring that on a foreign soldier (who you MET in an ambush that she fought her way out of) and ask "How could this happen?!"

9: cinnamon roll or problematic fave? -Cinnamon roll who looks like she could kill you, but only would if she had no other choice (or your’re dick who attacked her city unprovoked and murdered her sister)

5: first headcanon that pops into my head - She is self-conscious about her voice and has worked very hard to get perfect control over it so that no one can even hear her grunt from physical strain (it only serves to show how much the trial of light hurt if it could make her of all people cry out). The one area where she still needs practice? Making love. Janai consistently does everything she can to show Amaya how much she loves to hear her so the woman feels safe enough to stay vocal

6: favorite line from this character- too many to choose from... The prayer to her sister.

7: one way in which I relate to this character - umm...I guess we both have a disability? Does that count?

8: thing that gives me second hand embarrassment about this character- Madam, for being so good at reading people, you really couldn't tell those elves weren't trained fighters?

9: cinnamon roll or problematic fave? Problematic Cinnamon Roll? Look we barely knew Amaya for a minute before finding out she was a racist. But she is a good example of 'misguided not evil' (see Viren for evil), her hatred isn't blind. Her opinion changes easily and quickly if the evidence proves her wrong, she doesn't try to ignore it nor does she try to defend herself or any actions she took while under the wrong impression.

She still makes mistakes, she lets her sense of humor make an insensitive ass out of herself from time to time. But she recognizes her mistakes, works to correct them, and tries not to repeat them.

general opinions: Where do I begin? Gus is perfect (end of essay 😂). I will admit he wasn't my favorite character from the show until about last October, after TTT aired, but he definitely is now. He's just so damn cool. Like, you have this 12/13 year old hanging out with people 1-3 years older than him and he not only holds his own but he's the coolest fucking 13 year old I've ever seen. He's so so smart and powerful, he's mature, and he is way way more than just the comic relief or whatever stale takes I've seen about Gus online. There's nothing wrong with being funny, and there's nothing wrong with using humor to cope with trauma. He's still a young kid going through puberty, and being stuck in the human realm (when it's been his dream to see the human realm) hits him the hardest out of everyone. But people take that scene and really infantilize him over it. He's a single child with a single dad, which makes him a lot like Luz in a way (and I bet they have some shared traumas they can absolutely bond over with losing a parent), but just because he's dependent on his dad and missing him does not make him a small, weak child. He's a kid, yeah, but he's a damn tough kid, and if you're sad, you can bet your ass he will be the first one to try and make you smile. If WAD doesn't have a gus-centric focus y'all will see me on the news! also only Gus would be able to train matty let's be real here LMAO but I love Gus so much and I think he's very relatable to us former-gifted kids, who always felt pressure to surpass everyone's expectations of our skills in school. He has an incredible support system in place with Willow and Hunter, I love their dynamic so much, he really deserves friends like them and Matt!! Because, while yes I do ship Gus with Matt, I hc that they build up such a strong and solid friendship first, which is how any great relationship should be :) Anyways yeah, Augustus Porter is awesome <3

season 4 of teen wolf kinda sucks on its own but it's such a great segue into s5. I think the only other seasons that tie together as well as 4 and 5a are s1&2. Where s4 fails on its own because it's not rooted well enough into previous seasons, a lot of the stuff in s5 gets introduced in s4 and it's obvious in the way that Theo breaks apart the pack using cracks in the Mccall Pack that already existed.

Character ask: Simba (The Lion King)

These answers are for the original film and stage musical only: it's been too many years since I saw Simba's Pride, I've never seen The Lion Guard, and I have reservations about the 2019 remake.

Favorite thing about them: I don't think I can name just one thing: he's just an engaging, well-rounded character over all. He goes through an epic coming-of-age journey in the vein of stories from the Bible, Shakespeare, and various myths (not to mention Bambi), with poignant themes of grief, guilt, and responsibility. Yet the fact that he's playful and mischievous, even as an adult, makes him likable, and the fact that he's clever but not always wise makes him interesting. More so than if he had just been a wide-eyed innocent. Yes, he's far from perfect – he can be arrogant and reckless as a cub, and he runs from his duty as an adult – but neither are most of the time-honored heroes whom he parallels, like Hamlet, Gilgamesh, Joseph son of Jacob, or Moses. The fact that we follow him from childhood to adulthood also makes him an especially appealing, relatable character for child viewers. What more can I say?

Least favorite thing about them: His refusal at first to go back to Pride Rock and reclaim the throne from Scar. His reason why is understandable and sympathetic, but still, he almost leaves all the animals in the Pride Lands, including his long-lost mother, to starve to death under Scar's brutal reign.

Random headcanon: When Mufasa says "One day the sun will set on my time here and will rise with you as the new king," Simba sincerely doesn't realize that this means he'll only be king after his father dies. Children often don't understand euphemisms. He thought Mufasa only meant that one day his time as king would end and Simba would take his place. So when he sings "I Just Can't Wait to Be King," he's not singing "I just can't wait for Dad to die." The fact that just a few hours later, he asks Mufasa "And we'll always be together, right?" shows that he hasn't registered that someday they won't. (This might not be a headcanon, but just plain canon – I'm just tired of hearing people complain "Simba looks forward to his dad's death.")

Unpopular opinion: His journey doesn't "lack a middle": his childhood and his adulthood are two separate journeys in and of themselves. The fact that the film skips over his years in the jungle with Timon and Pumbaa takes away nothing from his character development. If you analyze his character arc based on the template of the Hero's Journey by Joseph Campbell, his childhood until his father's death covers only the first stage of the journey ("The Ordinary World," establishing the world the hero has always known). The majority of the stages ("The Call to Adventure," "Refusal of the Call," "Meeting the Mentor," "Crossing the First Threshold," etc.) take place later. I've also written my own analysis of his character arc (which I'll share in a separate post), according to a different "hero's journey" template, inspired by Campbell's but not identical to it: the Masculine Journey from Victoria Lyn Schmidt's 45 Master Characters. This template makes more sense of the length of time spent in Simba's childhood than using the Campbell template does – his childhood scenes and his adulthood scenes each consist of a complete Masculine Journey-style character arc. Each arc includes every one of the stages ("The Perfect World," ""Friends and Enemies," etc.), with his childhood journey ending in what Schmidt calls "Rebellion" and "Failure," while his adulthood journey ends in "Awakening" and "Victory." His teenage years would have been completely irrelevant to include, either (from the Campbell perspective) because his journey really starts in his adulthood and his childhood is only a long prologue, or (from the Schmidt perspective) because the years in the jungle are only a bridge from his first complete journey to his second one. I hope this hasn't been too heady and confusing, but whenever some critic complains that Simba's character arc "has no middle," I want to give them a scholarly essay explaining why they're wrong.

Favorite Thing: He's so charismatic and he's always so nice. Every time I write him, especially with Basil, I forget just how much of an asshole he can be.

Least Favorite Thing: He canonically uses liberal politics and the continued marginalization of minorities (specifically women) to further his own capitalistic wants.

Favorite Line: You're really gonna make me reread my entire ass fic to find a favorite line?/j It's a three way tie between “You weren't born wrong, at all. I promise you, you are perfect as you are now.” and "I know no love or affection but that which is all consuming." and “Henry Wotton. It always has to be Lord Henry fucking Wotton."

brOTP: He and Dorian would have had the best friendship ever. It's just two children being absolute children and both have gen z humor.

OTP: Hedonistic Capitalism. It's two terrible people being terrible with each other. It's a net loss for the world. These two become weirdly gentle and genuine in ways that they aren't with anyone one else. Also it's funny because Henry desperately tries to hide the fact he's dating an American. (ugh)

nOTP: Basil and Roland. Listen, I had Roland explicitly state that he loves Basil platonically because I didn't want people romanticizing their relationship. The power dynamic between them is violently vast. Because of monetary reasons and spoiler-y reasons, Roland literally holds Basil's life in his hands (even if he never says it), so any relationship, but especially a romantic one is very unbalanced and even abusive by some definitions.

Random Headcanon: uhhh if he were in the Mythology AU, he'd be the God of Trade and Wagers. He constantly screws with Henry by letting ill humans gamble with him, which sometimes results in him asking Basil to heal them and thus stopping their deliverance to the underworld.

Unpopular Opinion: I made him lmao, so any unpopular opinions are just canon. But I guess if I have to: He's a super unreliable narrator and you should question everything he's ever said ;)

Gender Headcanon: Cis male A ship I have with said character: Haha okay so the stories I've heard about Erlang Shen and the art with ships I've seen with him has convinced me that the Erlang Shen x Sun Wukong ship is pretty neat BUT ONLY when it's extremely and grudgingly one-sided on Erlang Shen's part while the monkey king remains completely clueless. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think I do remember seeing a story about the war god being married and then divorced from a dragon princess as well...it conclusion, it is in fact a tragi-comedy if he was left as epic divorce god who also lost a custody battle over his nephew with a monkey who never has and never will return Erlang Shen's affections. A BROTP I have with said character: I don't know that much about them, but this position would surely have to go to the seven elite sages that Erlang Shen is sworn brothers with! A NOTP I have with said character: As with Zhu Bajie I haven't seen any ships with the war god that I found particularly bad...maybe I just haven't been exposed to the horrors out there though. A random headcanon: That he's secretly ashamed of himself for having done the same thing to his nephew and sister that the Jade Emperor did to him and his own mother, and that he doesn't know how to reconcile these feelings and resultant uncertainties with being Heaven's greatest warrior. General Opinion over said character: The more I learn about this figure the more fascinating I find him, especially since he's gone through so many different iterations and has had one story after another added to the mythos around him as the centuries roll past! But I guess I'm particularly appreciating what seem to be more recent interpretations of him as an often painfully human (and extraordinary powerful) deity who's found himself torn between his duty to Heaven and his love for his family.
