Patch making tutorials?

and here i am once again, with a patch making tutorial

how to make stenciled patches:

i'll post a part two in the future which will cover freehanding and stamping ur patches

first some general info that might be useful:

i get my patch design inspo from pinterest, etsy, and tumblr. if sell your patches make sure you arent ripping off another artists patch design when using etsy for inspo. anarchostencilism also has tons of stencils both on deviantart and reddit which are free to use.

i use acrylic paint for my patches, but if you can afford it id advise fabric paint. to seal paint into the fabric iron the patches, it helps em last longer. some acrylic paint survives very well in the washing machine, but wash your stuff by hand the first time to see how well it holds up.

if you make your patches multiple colors, dont first make the whole patch one color and then paint over it with the other colors. if the paint starts cracking the base color will show through. (if you like that however then dont mind this)

i paint my patches on jean fabric, cause it makes the patches sturdy yet flexible. but shirt fabric or canvas both work very well too. anything except really plasticy/slippery or textured fabric can be used

i pin my patches down with pins onto multiple layers of taped together cartboard, to prevent the fabric from moving around and distorting the print

there's two ways in which i make my stencils

1. with paper covered in tape

2. with the plastic folder you put in your binders

option 1:

draw out your design onto some paper, make sure there arent any "loose" parts in the design that will get lost when cutting out the stencil

cover the paper in tape front and back, make sure you can still see your design through the tape

cut out your design, i use scissors and an exacto knife

option 2:

draw out your design (you can also draw the design directly onto the plastic folder)

cut a piece of plastic out of the folder big enough to cover your drawing and tape it down.

trace the design onto the plastic with pen or marker (any mistakes can be wiped out)

cut out your stencil

continuation from both option 1 and 2

after finishing your stencil you can pin them down on some fabric

dap on your paint with the point of a big brush or a sponge, depending on the paint it'll take 2-3 layers.

make sure your previous layer dried completely before adding the next one

after the paint has fully dried you can carefully take off your stencil.

!!dont unpin the patch before it fully dried, or the drying paint may cause the fabric to warp!!

heey i have a band and want to make tshirts to sell at our next show, do you have any easy/cheap diy ideas that look nice? silkscreening is too expensive, and i'm not shure if a stencil + fabric paint would stand the test of time...

Okay this craft is thin foam board paper, cardboard, and hot glue, super glue if u can whateever to get that down.

First draw the design you want on the tshirt. Make it simple enough you can cut it out with scissors. Here im drawing out the words again and again playing with making each letter a solid shape with no holes, playing with letter sizes and fonts, trying to draw it smaller and bigger to see how it feels.

Then the finalised logo and size is done in tracing paper so it can be flipped :3 u can also use white paper, flip it, then shine your phone light under it, and draw the logo on the otherside. i just find havi a reference to work off of and getting familiar with the shapes your working with helps.

You cut the logo out of the foam board, then place it on the cardboard flipped to make the mirror image of your logo. Glue down all the foam pieces. I fucked up the D in my logo because i glued it on the wrong side. So i just cut it out again in some green foam.

Make sure to cut off the excess cardboard on the edges. Then tada you have a stamp!

To begin printing with your stamp use a roller to apply fabric paint to it. I personally use speedball fabric ink it is better for rolling onto stamps. The ink stays wet for a long time, applys well to fabric, washs away easy, and it stays better.

I use a rubber speedball roller as well as it applys it evenly. you can definitely diy a roller from a lint roller wrapped in smth. I use an overpriced $40 handle to press down the stamp to fabric. Before i used a heavy mug to press them down.

As you can see by how bad and uneven the color is in the below photo of my first print with the stamp, what really matters is taking your time to apply pressure and your body weight over all of the stamp. And making sure to take your time. It makes the difference in the tshirt print as you can see that i figured out to apply evenly.

If a patch doesnt come out even, you can come back in with a paint brush to fill in the gaps so it looks cleaner, as i did with that patch later.

Also i use wet wipes to try wipe it off. Its not linocut so you cant wash it. So making sure theres no paint on the cardboard before you print is important.

my friend REALLY liked one of the meth warriors in the serendipolis picture (i need to call them something better than meth warriors i feel mean) so I made him a veteran whose bestest friend is an oil lamp. oil lamps should be MUCH simpler than the one in the photo at this point in time but I'm not taking away his bestest friend

HOWEVER, this photo kickstarted all the worldbuilding because what he's wearing on his neck are shells! What animal made those shells? snails probably, but how do snails look like here? Also, those clothes are way more complex than usual and I forgot to share the explanation, where zebrapeople have stamps, pronged brushes, and stencils to make their clothing patterns.

And since I was on that worldbuilding train, why stop it? It's TREE TIME baby

I had the idea where they could have land coral as trees! But I realized that 1, coral takes Fucking Forever to grow, and 2, what would they eat, there's no plankton in the air. So I made this

They're photosynthetic with a big crown of leaves around their base (Or just about anywhere they please) and they are just crazy little shits that grow in every direction possible and whenever branches hit the earth again, it just becomes a root like a banyan tree. They still have a skeleton of limestone around them like coral, but they have a softer, marrow-y middle that Debu like to eat. The fact that they can snap these land coral trees like it's easy is another reason zebrapeople fear them. Especially zebraelves, on account of living in land coral.

More populated areas like cities have more homes on the ground (or sometimes, underground) but a population in the hundreds can be supported by land coral on account of just how sporadic and everywhere their growth is, being able to support structures from how dense the supporting roots and foundation is. Due to this, Zebraelves also have mastered the art of tree shaping (coral shaping, more like) where they just bend the land coral into whatever they want.

Also, galls! Galls on the homo mousike planet are much larger because the bug that makes them is much larger, a stinging dragonfly-looking critter. They sting budding lyps and their leaves and make them grow galls for their children to eat and live in.

And you can pop them! Like popcorn!

There's a lot of different types of galls, they have different tastes and are sometimes used as decoration from their interesting appearances, but they're super widespread in homo mousike cuisine, it's like rice

Bad example on account of the featured bug being very small, but. yeah

some of the larger "bugs" have flexible, chitin skeletons, but they're mostly held up by muscles alone, strengthened by circular ones that tighten around them.

Not drunk anymore but still thinking about seals and fuinjutsu and like. what are the limitations really on this thing. Like, how precise do your line strokes have to be - I did a ton of brush calligraphy as a kid, trust me, that shit is deceptively hard - and are there cursive versions of seals.

Do you have to use specific ink and paper for seals? Probably not really since people are scrawling seals all over skin and tongues and floors and??? Can you scratch a quick seal on a wall with your kunai for an emergency explosion? Is it about inputting chakra and intent through pathways created through script??

Can you build that shit straight into the walls and floors of a building? Can you stitch seals into cloth for a garment?

Can you stencil spray seals???? Stamps?????

Huuuum yay, I actually forgot how much I disliked carving letters into lino sheets 🥰

Im trying to make banners again, and I wanted to try and use a stencil instead of a stamp.

I first tried with a sponge brush. Have a mix of red and white textile paint and make a « marble » effect. It worked 1 out of 3 times.

Problem : the paint needs to be watered down a bit, so it leaks under the stencil and smudges the fabric. Plus the stencil weakens after every tries. I don’t recommend using this technique. It works with the perfect amount of paint and water + pressure from the brush. Very hard to have consistent results.

I then tried with spray paint. I did 2 passes because its really hard to obtain results that are visible from 1 pass (plus, its gives a cool 3D effects, I might keep that !)

It uses a lot of paint, and results are not great.

So why -WHY!!!- did I was so stubborn and kept doing this ?! 😫😫😫

(Answer is : I was over it and upset and I soooo wanted it to work to NOT have to start all over again… Ugh…)

Advent Day V ~ It's Beginning to Look @corinnebaileyrp

With the lights dimmed and the doors locked anyone with half a brain would notice that the shop is closed but it doesn't stop Beth from gently tapping on the glass. The night is cold but she stamps her booted feet and seems momentarily delighted by the dampness in the air. Maybe in the next couple of days there will be snow. Or at the very least rain. Which on glass might turn into the very same lacy patterns she hopes to flock onto the insides of Cory's windows. At her feet is a suitcase roughly her same size that has stencils she's made, white paint with an assortment of pigment dyes in both glitter and non glitter, making tape, newspapers, everything she could think of to bring with her. Even tiny brushes and washable wall-crayons. Tonight is just the two of them and they're going to decorate the shop for the holidays. Cory lets her in with that glowing smile of hers and Beth can't help but throw her arms around her friend's neck with a girlish glee and kisses her cheek. Beth feels a little like ice but she'll live. The shop itself is warm and the smell of proofing bread and the day's pastries wafts toward her on a cloud of steam from a freshly brewing pot of coffee for them. Can Beth smell the difference between beans? Absolutely. Is Cory making them a pot of Jamaican Blue Mountain as a splurge, absolutely yes. And the little nurse is truly grateful. "Dat smell so sexy, I might change religion," she murmurs almost under her breath and is rewarded by the laugh Cory bestows on her. They both know Andy would have a lot to unpack with that statement and they spend a few moments mocking the missing man. They make quick work of covering the tables and floors so any mess makes for easy recycling. Cory has some ornaments and ribbons to make wreaths. And a gorgeously curated instrumental playlist. She tells Beth she's glad for the company, thanks her for the help and Beth nods. Cory knows she could just as easily do this with her fantastic employees but this is more personal. Beth knows she's an artist who doesn't share her work with many. Sometimes she wonders if Andy knows about Cory's sketchbooks. No real fault of his if he doesn't. Just makes the secret shared all that much more special in Beth's mind.

Cory works on the first wreath while Beth paints blue-white snow-drifts on the first window. "It was Christmas Eve, Babe In the drunk tank An old man said to me, won't see another one And then he sang a song…" Beth belts away, though she isn't half the musician that her brother is, but she stops and turns and raises a brow when Cory picks up where she left off. They take turns, until the last verse and suddenly both women are arm in arm, serenading the shop. "...The boys of the NYPD choir Still singing Galway Bay And the bells are ringing out For Christmas day."

Playable Necromancer Texturing Update

I found it really intriguing to work on the skin material for the necromancer. Following references and tutorials, I've learned so much about skin tones and colours. It was also fascinating to learn from traditional painting how the colours of the skin don't actually come from the skin colour we actually know.

I made the skin material by adding, with a textured air brush, different layers of colours which would correspond to the zones of the body. I used the red layer to add a bit of warmth from the blood, and more intense in the concentrated areas such as the eyes, cheekbones, and neck. Furthermore, I then added a yellow layer in the zones where more fat or cartilage would be. In the case of the necromancer, the yellow tint with the cold grey base colour, was also creating a nice effect of undead. On top, I've added a blue layer for the zones where the bones are closer to the skin, such as the forehead and the chin. These are the main layers which created the colour of the skin. On top of those I have added layers with shadows

These are the main layers which created the colour of the skin. On top of those I have added layers with shadows, procedural noise, and curvature maps to create a realistic look. At the end, I've added the markings on the head as thin tribal tattoos.

While working on the material, I kept switching between the material view and the colour view. The colour view helped me see better how my layers are distributed and adjust them accordingly.

Texturing the cloth was also very interesting. I also made the material by building up layers on top of each other. I started with the base colour and then added the main shadows and highlights. For the textile texture of the garment, I used the procedural layers from the smart materials, which contain functions and specific cloth textures.

For the design of the print, I used the stencil method to print the drawing on the cloth. I used Midjourney to generate patterns and designs. I then imported the PNG's in Photoshop to make the images black and white to use them as alphas for stencils.

I imported the black and white PNGs in Substance Painter and stamped the designs.

To add realism to the cloth, I also added threads and tears on the lower side, using opacity masks. At first, I painted the opacity masks with a brush, manually. However, after the feedback from my teachers, I generated grunge patterns in Midjourney and used them to create more realistic threads.

Using the patterns, which I adjusted a bit with the brush, I managed to create a more realistic look.

When I wanted to make the top part of the garment, I ran into the problem that the brush would paint through the whole mesh. To fix that, I separated the layer in a different folder and then masked that folder to only affect the top garment using the UV.

I really enjoyed texturing the skulls as I got to experiment with the bone material. I used a similar approach as I did with the skin, adding multiple layers of different colours. I also played with different grunge maps to add those deteriorated marks skulls have. As a final detail, I've added a paint layer and I painted cracks and imperfections with a negative height map to create more realism.

The final prop to texture was the dagger. For the bone elements, I used the same texture as I used for the skulls, with a bit of adjusting. The only new material that I had to create was for the flesh. I created multiple layers of reds and stacked them using different curvature masks and dirt masks to create this realistic mixture. To everything look bloody, I adjusted the roughness on some of the areas to be more glossy, giving it that wet look.
