No matter how much people complain about Buffy's soul lore (which, at least until the final season, is actually surprisingly consistent, albeit by the lax standards of the show), or about the adults of Sunnydale's rather oddly relaxed attitude to mysterious death-by-neck-puncture (which can at least be excused as a fairly heavy-handed metaphor for parents not noticing the challenges their children face, and is in any case simply required for the show as conceived to work at all), or about anything the Initiative get up to during Season 4 (which ... no, I've got nothing to say in defence of any of that, it's just shit, isn't it?), the single worst bit of Buffy's worldbuilding is and always will be that ridiculous magic scythe and all the utter nonsense surrounding it. Just genuinely laughably bad writing on every level.

I wonder what's weirder: Buffy's strange pregnancy in season 8 and how she got pregnant (well, less how she got pregnant, but more the flying sex and her and Angel suddenly being gods) or Willow's pregnancy (that we don't see, just get told about, as this happened years ago in the book's past) and how she got pregnant in "In Every Generation."

Probably still the Buffy one, but just barely. And that's saying something.

And somehow they beat out things like Darla's vampire pregnancy and Cordelia's demon pregnancies on the shows, making them almost seem normal in comparison. How?

Edit: Actually, the Willow pregnancy in "In Every Generation" might be oddest. Somehow, she became pregnant with her daughter Frankie when she did the spell to turn all the Potentials into Slayers. The author, Kendare Blake, almost make it sound like the spirit of the first Slayer (Sineya) somehow impregnated her. I feel like it would make more sense, if it had been the demon that the first Slayer had been infused with that did this, but I didn't write this.

Compare that with Buffy and Angel, as gods, having sex and giving birth to a whole new universe that way. You tell me which is stranger.

so i’m probably late to the party because the movie was just released here, but i really loved “i saw the tv glow” and thought it would be fun to write down some of the buffy coded stuff in it. so there’s the obvious “female lead supernatural teen drama with a monster of the week format that deals with adolescence and destiny etc etc etc” stuff but here’s a list of some of the other similarities/references i spotted:

♡the opening credits of “the pink opaque” uses the same font as buffy

♡doublelunch = a reference to “doublemeat palace”

♡amber benson cameo (duh!)

♡a character named “tara” (bonus points because maddie/tara is a lesbian)

♡”the pink opaque” is cancelled at season 5 and buffy was meant to end at the 5th season

♡buffy season 6 starts with buffy having to claw herself out of her own grave after being brought back from the afterlife and (presumably) season 6 of “the pink opaque” would begin with isabel & tara also doing the same - we know maddie/tara does this obviously, but it’s left ambitious whether owen/isabel will but it’s implied that season 6 can’t properly start til owen/isabel does…

♡having actual irl musicians perform at a club just reminded me of when irl bands performed at “the bronze” (and also like in “p3” in “charmed” and other shows of that era) …not so much a reference but i thought that was neat

♡so “snail mail” did a cover of “tonight, tonight” for the film and on the cover of the single she’s holding a buffy style scythe

The Evermore Grimoire: Slayers

Buffy Summers was called to be the Slayer in 1996 at fifteen years old. She was originally living in Los Angeles, but, due to an incident involving a gang of vampires at Hemery High School, she was expelled and moved to Sunnydale with her mother, Joyce Summers where she acted as guardian of the Hellmouth for seven years before the town's destruction. Initially a reluctant hero who constantly wished for nothing more than a normal life, Buffy eventually grew to embrace her destiny. She was unique as a Slayer in many ways; she refused to sacrifice her ordinary life for her supernatural destiny, often operated as part of a team with her friends the Scooby Gang, and had romantic relationships with two notorious vampires called Angel and Spike. Buffy was also one of the longest-living of all the Slayers, having died twice which in turn disrupted the Slayer line by causing two Slayers to exist at the same time. The first being Kendra Young who then died at the hands of Drusilla which in turn activated Faith Lehane. However it was her second death that changed the course of the Slayer line for good. After Willow Rosenberg resurrected Buffy with dark magic, she unknowingly reactivated Buffy's place within the Slayer line causing it to split in two and run through both Buffy and Faith. This angered The First who believed the balance between good and evil had tipped too far and enacted a war against the Slayer line by attempting to kill all the Potential Slayers. During the war, Buffy came across the Scythe, an ancient weapon specifically designed for the Slayer to wield that had been hidden from the world. It was this weapon that gave Buffy the idea to activate the remaining Potential Slayers, abolishing the traditional line of the Chosen One and creating an army of Slayers as well closing the Hellmouth for good.

NO BUT LISTEN OKAY LISTEN. Two of the biggest burdens Buffy had, the two things that truly kept her trapped, that doomed her to a life of endless pain and ultimately death…was her being the only chosen one and the Hellmouth. She couldn’t escape her calling, and she couldn’t leave the Hellmouth. But then came the scythe…the Slayer’s scythe that is the reason they could awake all the other slayers. The reason Buffy is truly no longer the only chosen one. No longer alone in her fight. And she says she was able to get it because Spike gave her the strength to go claim it. Because he helped her. Because he believed in her. And then there’s the Hellmouth, the Hellmouth that Spike destroyed, that he closed. That he stood on top of refused to leave until the job was done, even at the cost of his life.

ITS YOUR WORLD UP THERE. NOW GO!

Don’t you see? Don’t you get it? Buffy’s free. Buffy’s not trapped anymore. All the responsibility isn’t solely on her anymore. She can live her life and not have to endlessly guard the gates of hell. She can live in the world now. Go and see the world and what it has to offer.

While Buffy's most iconic weapon is her stake, she uses all sorts of weapons as the slayer, including multiple swords - like to kill her turned-evil-boyfriend to save the world, or swordfighting knights on top of a moving Winnebago, she can do it all. 

Idk if she counts lol I'm thinking about the finale where she has this scythe thingy... Other than that she uses stakes which if you think about it are basically daggers

For Orym:

This guy might just a little dude but damn he packs a punch with this fighting style.  He's like a goddamn sword dancer on the battlefield.  Got not only a sword that been passed down to him from his family but it also it's a blade with a name (Seedling, the wayward Pilgrim, how fucking adorable is that) and been god touched by the Wildmother. He's not only canonly gay, but also married his childhood best friend. Will asked first and he said yes.  So, extra level of adorable there, despite that he tragically lost his husband later on.  He even got a whole tattoo sleeve in memory.  Like, that's damn gay right there.

He studied the blade alongside his husband, and became part of the Tempest Blades (basically guards of the village and leader). After he and the party helped Keyleth (leader), he was given the 'Savior Blade' title. Protects the party with his life. He's also very small, if that counts for anything.
