Hi, I used to draw a lot but I've not drawn/created for a long time now, any tips to get back into it?

Or rather the whole thing about making art for yourself, I used to get a lot of attention for being good at art from other ppl and I'm not sure how to connect it back to myself again

I'm also contending with the Autism "It needs to be done in this way" and the ADHD "I can't focus for shit"

Also please don't worry if you don't know what to say, I'm just trying to get a variety of opinions to try and untangle my brain

i think a good way to get back into creating *for yourself* whether its to come out of a dry spell or just to get back to creating things that you like, is what i call 'backtracking' (bearing in mind that my particular methods may only work for me! im lucky ive never struggled with focus when it comes to drawing things, but maybe some of these things will help as my main goal when drawing is to entertain myself!)

also before i move on this i think is valuable: you gotta draw things that you aren't gonna post sometimes. it's fun and fulfilling to make art for an audience, and wanting attention is not shameful (ITS HUMAN!) but also we live in panopticon times and i think its good to train your "i am alone doing something for myself and no one has to see it" muscles.

backtracking is a couple different things:

look back to when you were really young. what kinds of drawings were the most fun to do? what did you spend time on or get really into? for me, this was a few things! tracing cartoons, drawing up elaborate scenes of lots of little creatures doing a thing, and designing little characters as paper dolls and making their houses and little furniture and accessories and such to cut out and play with. also getting paint all over my hands (i still paint my whole hand whenever im done doing something with acrylics before i wash up! its stimming)! backtracking here is when you try to take those things and make use of them now. try to find that old joy and use it in a way that makes you happy today, even if it's something small or silly or embarrassing. it can really help you rediscover what parts of art make YOU happy!

if you're regularly drawing and in a slump, backtracking for me is stepping back and doing either more exercises and practising the things you feel like you already know how to draw (ie. studying angles of the face or pulling up imgs of rooms on pinterest to see how normal people arrange furniture etc.), or simplifying your drawings to a level that feels more relaxing and less stressful. (ie. chibis instead of more detailed characters etc.) i find i kind of fall back to chibis when i feel lost, and then sort of rebuild from there. its fun to let my style change as i grow!

ALSO! im telling your autism this for your adhd's sake (this is useful for anyone i think): if there is a part of art that you do not enjoy doing or find boring but you feel it is an important or necessary step in the process? the secret is it isnt! art is made up. if you hate lining, dont do it! if youre a digital artist and get caught up picking a brush every time because you feel like you need the perfect one? switch to mspaint for a bit to get the nerves out. it can be really freeing!

art is for having fun and fulfilling our need to create. the rules are all made up and not real. perfectionism is the little death that something something i forget. yeah

Honestly, there are many pieces I wish to redraw... I'll try to share some!

For starter, I want to redraw my Questober entirely. I'm not satisfied with how most pieces turned out... I can do better.

I used to draw my Guardian a LOT back in the day (I drew her way more than Jasper, in a time where I didn't share my art bc too young). I drew her whenever I wanted to test some new art supplies or just a style, or anything. Most of the art I want to redraw includes her.

Was thinking of redrawing this one, too... I don't like Jasper's face here. Like, at all...

I wish to also redraw these chibis & add characters... You can find these two on my Redbubble shop right here, but I wanted the whole cast. Maybeeee...

In general I want to redraw a lot of drawings, even just as sketches to see my improvement. It's kind of a fun exercise!

Your name comes up every now and then but has anyone asked how you are handling everything yet? I haven't seen you only as much and hope it's to take a mental check to get better vibes around you not because you're struggling horribly with the backlash for speaking up.

Kinda a mix of irl and focusing on my own projects actually though I'm surprised it's still bothered to put energy into saying stuff about me any which way. I've been struggling to draw like wanted since all of it so rediscovering a main art style as well as a second one to play with a side blog for a Cult of the Lamb thing to store my lore more than anything with a friend

This one is on a base trace over at first to get shapes and design down but an example of the species project and a reason it will be open when more public just wanting to vibe with others even if recycling some of the design from another character concept I never went through with. Absolutely still need to adjust the yellow of the eyes admittedly and couldn't be bother to do my usual signature when so heavily base reliant for this start.

Uh I suppose a few redesigns in general to remove Vidia influence over any of my art even if she doesn't know of how much it effected some characters. Actual piece are all over but some are had completed at least.

Minesona got updated art and, well, admittedly thought a person I was accused of tracing art was cute, so I tried to mimic the style. It was not my cup of tea to do but was a fun exercise, especially already practicing chibis and trying to find a style to feal right for the COTL project.

New baby thats very cotton candy and chocobo and all you need to know is Fii made a very fun species called Somnia Custodes and I'm in love with their birds because they remind me of chocobo so they are great for posing.

I'm working on lining art I penned on a postit note while bored at work because man I love my gremlin but he is not good about caring for his health or listening

Same day postit abomination where I combined all of @the-bone-vault characters that I remember into one man

We are also in an artist telephone game that chibi and simplified my old goat design UwU

By artist telephone I mean he drew off of a friend doing the sketch and then I colored it

2023 recap!

Can't belive the year is over! Time to look back cause I sure don't remember half the stuff I've done

January

Birb got 10 notes and I couldn't believe how much people loved him.

I tried a crochet kit and was defeated. In my defense I have to say it was right after an exam and it was really cold.

I got a watercolor set and rediscovered my love for watercolor

February

Discovered Funguary, and made 4 charactes. It's a really fun challenge that I'm surely going to participate again.

I made quite a few watercolor pieces, I still like them all a lot

March

Don't know how, but I finished the 100 head challenge. There are some awful monstruosities, but I learned a lot. I'll probably do it again in the future, it's a pretty nice exercise.

I finally made a sona! And this one has stuck! I love my lil shadow creature.

April

Made what is probably the watercolor piece I love the most. And one the pieces I like the most overall.

I got FlipaClip and had a lot fun making some little animations. Someone even used one of the lil gifs! That made me pretty happy

I personalized a little notebook to carry around, and it was the best desition of my life. I love that thing. And it's amazing that I don't have to search for the pen, it's all together!

The coin pouch is also one of the best things I've made. The strings are a bit long and the embroidery is a bit loose, I'll fix those on the next one I make (looking at you, squid pouch)

The anual redraw of Coral and Sebastian couldn't be missing. The poor Sebastian finally got his (I hope) final design. I was in love with how it looks, but looking it now... What hapened to their faces?

Decided to redraw some old drawings I had on Ibis. The progress I've made since I drew the originals.

Mermay, of course! Somehow they turned into oficial ocs. I love the stupid trio.

Aaaaaaahhhhh!!!! It's almost July and I haven't updated my ArtFight references! "Chibi" versions it is. At least now a lot of them have colored full body references.

Painted a box! It's now buried under too many trinkets I have to clean up, but I still love how pretty it looks!

Started a new sketchbook and painted the cover. I love the mushroom lantern.

Made this year's Artfight gif, banner and artfighters. The silly gif brings me a smile every time I see it.

July

ArtFight! 42 attacks and 21 defenses. I have no idea how I managed to make so many. I did get burned out on the second half of the month tho. I absolutely love every single art I received, but this one with Coral and Sebastian has a special place.

What do you do when you are burned out? You make a new style, of course! I love the simple style that came out of that. Feels weird to see that is fairly recent, I feel like I've been using it for ages. It has evolved a bit since, those thin lines in the eyes look weird now.

Nuclear Waste was born. And people went crazy. The silly boy loves and appreciates all the affection you've showered him!

Smaugust is a thing? Dragons! I still need so much prectice with them and animals in general.

I made a comic! I love it, it's so silly. I had a great time with it.

September

Pirate shirt! It fits a bit weird, but I think I can fix it. It took soooo long to hand sew it

I got a drawing tablet! Took me a couple of weeks to get used to, but it was worth it. I love using it.

To practice I made every single prompt of CuteGirltober. The only reason I was able to finish is that most of them were left as sketches. Should have learned from ArtFight, I can't draw every day, that's too much.

November

I made a font! It works really well, and it's so fun to type something and see it look like you handwrote it.

Got to write a bit too. I need to do that more.

I also worked on some proyects I've been wanting to do but haven't touched in a long while.

Including bookbinding a little notebook! I filled it with headshots of my ocs.

December

ArticFight prompts and a secret santa were mostly the reasons I drew. I love this one with Alex and Layla.

I also made some free adoptables. There might be some left when this is posted.

And we are done with the year!

Art Style Tests!

I tried to experiment with different styles from my usual one and it was a fun exercise. Definitely helped me see alot of alternative things I could do with my style.

Smol Jestro!

Idk what kind of style this is. I just used the circle tool a lot. I like the simplicity of it tho. He's cute. It's literally just shapes and the most minimal amount of lines. Simple. Very chibi ESC. I like it.

Lorge Jestro!

For this one I tried the more "Detailed" style. I tried to add details I wouldn't add in my regular style and I gave the hair more swoops while also trying better anatomy, different eye size, nose and head shape. Also thinner line art. Also drawing his hat it this style was annoying me and I wanted the swoopy hair to be more shown that's why I'd didn't draw it.

It is time for

This year the event will be hosted by Snow Miku! Not exactly magical girls but close enough design wise.

At first it looked like I barely read any magical girl manga this year, but then ended up reading a couple in the final few weeks of the year:

Also I read a lot of magical girl webcomics!

(Magical Mom, Sleepless Domain, Cloudy Wondrous, Apricot Cookie(s)!, Miss Guillotine, Strawberry Seafoam)

Then let's go through the events that happened this year. We had a tournament for the favourite Precure, and Cure Milky was the winner! This time it has taken even longer to draw the celebratory art for the winners than last year and I'm still not done, but I guess nobody but me really cares about that so all is well.

We also had a poll for most/least favourite magical girl elements, which I used to compile the most liked and least liked magical girls (though I think the least liked one turned out to be more popular). I really liked this idea and would like to do something more with it one day, or at least just get statistics on people's opinions on different magical girl tropes for fun.

I also did both Mermay and Witchtober this year (and Adorkastock Draw Everything June which I've done every year since its inception), which included a lot of magical girl content. I like these monthly drawing challenges since I enjoy drawing a set of themed characters, and usually the results are a lot more varied than the stuff I usually draw. So next year I'd like to do some more, but I'll have to find different challenges so it won't get repetitive, this was the second Mermay I did and while it mostly involved characters I never draw otherwise, I'd still like to give that spot to something else next time.

Saban Moon was unleashed to the public this year, which did not affect me that much since I have very little relationship with Sailor Moon, but I can still appreciate unearthing a secret alternative version of a well known character (also it was my most popular drawing this year)

This year I started and exercise project by trying to motivate myself with the reward of buying a Miku Nendoroid each time I exercise a certain amount of times. It has been mostly successful, or there are breaks but they are a lot shorter than they would ever be without a prize looming in the future. Much recommended!

Finally one thing that's different from last year that I didn't draw a lot of characters for my magical girl chibi series, because I was busy drawing a different kind of chibi series (hundreds of Pokemon chibis on my other blog). And this chibi style spread to several of my other fandoms too, I used it on the Witchtober, and I've done four (I think) sets of requests in it.

Finally a mention to my frustration on the lack of green Precures culminating in a series of green Precure OCs. 

Then onto the awards!

Best Henshin Design goes to Cloudy Wondrous! A solid design where everything works together (I’m especially a fan of the cloud motif used in different places), and the unique details (crown, wing eyepatch thing) make it more memorable.

Best Team Design goes to Tokyo Mew Mew New! Granted I think I like the original designs more, but TMM team design is still strong here as well, it's recognisable as TMM but highly customisable for OCs.

Best Powerup Design goes to Strawberry Seafoam! Or they should probably rather be called separate forms on the same level with different purposes rather than increasing in power, but who's counting. They are all pretty (as are the other mermaids' transformations) but let's say the jellyfish one is my favourite, it has such warm glowing palette (but also an illuminated dark mode!) and it creates a unique silhouette.

Also a shoutout to Cure Spicy's Party Up Style "hat".

Best Civilian Design goes to Amane's winter look from Delicious Party Precure! It just looks so comfy...

Best Hair goes to Sae from Magic User's Club! It's pretty simple compared to the usual absurd magical girl hairstyles, but I like how the angular shapes make it memorable.

Best Magical Item goes to Bijou's pen from Strawberry Seafoam! It looks pretty, and I like magic where you actually draw your spells. And it's fun to see her style evolve!

Best Henshin Scene goes to the dresser henshin in Magilumiere! Overall it has a lot of creative henshin and I really hope it gets animated some day!

Best Fan Creation is the catch-all award for everything that's not from, like, a big corporation, and this year the competition is really tough with all these highly polished webcomics, on a normal year any one of them would have been the winner but now I have to pick one. And it is also this year's Best Work, so more on that later! 

Best Relationship goes to the group in Magic Users' Club! Their relationships feel very natural, and everyone has something different going on with the other characters. And while there is a little drama, the overall vibe is delightfully positive.

Best Mascot goes to Kome-Kome from Delicious Party Precure! Personality or plot-wise there's nothing that interests me about her, but it must be said that I'm a sucker for progressively aging designs and she's also stupidly cute.

Best Supporting Character goes to the 4th wall breaking Director of Darkness, from Apricot Cookie(s)! He just cracks me up every time he is on panel with his friendly and welcoming attitude. 

Honourable mention to Mari-chan from Precure who is the best character in the season but who unfortunately doesn’t get to do much.

Best Visual goes to the art style of Strawberry Seafoam! Bold and unique glowing saturated colours that somehow feel nostalgic. Special mention to all the swirly magic.

Honourable mention to the art style shifts Apricot Cookie(s)!, sometimes the art goes to retro manga or anime or 3d idol dance models for fun. And another honourable mention to the visual presentation of the Apricot Cookies website.

Best Audio goes to the Shiny Luminous / Queen theme in Futari wa Precure Splash Star (not the henshin one but the one when she’s doing something epic). Feels very majestic.  

For the Best Scene I don’t have anything specific that comes to mind over everything else this year, so let’s say Kuroe’s fate in MagiReco, Shiny Luminous in the Max Heart finale and Grandma’s fate in Apricot Cookie(s)! can share it.

Innovation Award is for honouring a work doing something new and refreshing for the magical girl genre. This year I read several webcomics (that generally get to be more innovative than commercial anime) and even one actual manga that focused on "magical girls as a job", but each with a little different angle. So a shoutout to Magilumiere Co ltd, Sleepless Domain, Cloudy Wondrous, Apricot Cookie(s)!, Miss Guillotine and Magical Mom! With this many of them it'd feel a little weird to pick any for the "innovation award" over the same topic, so let's reward Magical Mom, for having, well, the magical mom! Magical girls whose mother is also a magical girl are of course a thing, but this time the child is a boy, and the mother also is an active and prominent character (and not just a background mentor), so that is new to me.

Then the Golden Mana Award, that is the dishonourable mention awarded to one thing I didn't like this year! 

This year it goes to Porun from Futari wa Precure Max Heart. Frankly he was probably more annoying in the original Futari wa but I had something else to complain about that year so now it's his turn. For the life of me I can't understand how this would be an appealing character concept even for children, like don't even 5-year-olds get annoyed at a toddler sibling's tantrums interrupting their big kid play? Even his less overtly irritating scenes don't do much for me, since they rely on "aww isn't it cute how the baby wants to be with you" mushiness.

Also another dishonourable mention to downgrading Pudding’s jumpsuit into a dress.

Best Character goes to Kuroe! (from MagiReco) I really like her design (especially how it mirrors Iroha’s), her quiet and hesitant personality and her melancholic story that felt fresh among all the magical girls who excitedly jump into saving every passerby. Or I don’t really like how she fit in the larger narrative, but in isolation I think her story was interesting.

Best Work goes to Apricot Cookie(s)! It's really funny and the art is great, and the character designs are memorable. The heroine is charmingly dumb and everyone in her family is great. And it took a while to grow on me, but in the end the weeb references make me feel at home.

Plans for 2023

I didn't manage to get any of the shorter mg shows from last year's list (though I did watch Magic User’s Club which wasn’t on the list) so those are still there. I'd also like to watch two series from the Precure backlog, this year I only managed one.

Art-wise I plan to do more for the chibi series, and do another "x colour Precure oc" series. And I'd really like to draw more art that has, like, a background or a mood or a composition, but let's see if that goes anywhere.

“How have Tsukki and Tobio been working together? I think they’re the only ones who can’t sync properly” You said, crossing your arms while watching Nishinoya receive another spike from Tanaka.

“Well,” Daichi started with a deadpan look on his face, “Kageyama and Tsukishima can sync, they just argue over it half of the time.” He finished, making you laugh at the thought of them arguing.

“Mmh, maybe a training exercise for the both of them?” You asked, grabbing one of Daichi’s hands into your own, playing with his fingers.

“That might work, but-” “OI DAI-SAN STOP MAKING US FEEL LONELY” Tanaka cut off Daichi as he saw that you were playing around with the captains fingers. 

“YEAH DAICHI-SAN, NOT ALL OF US HAVE AN ADORABLE SHORT GIRLFRIEND” Nishinoya joined in, making you glare at Nishinoya.

“I’M NOT THAT SHORT” You yelled back to the male with spiked hair. “YOU’RE SHORTER THEN ME” Noya yelled back.

“i don’t get how you like science? It’s so boooring,” you groaned, the pencil rolling out of your hand onto the desk.

You heard your boyfriend chuckle before hearing him walk over to you. You raised your head, watching as his golden hues skimmed over the paper before he let out a small ‘pfft’. 

“This is easy,” he said before explaining it.

You gasp as you finally get it, pushing Tetsurou’s hands away and grabbing your pencil, you began to scribble  the answer down, only to be pulled into a heated kiss. 

Kuroo’s tongue pushing past your lips to meet yours. Your eyes were wide, face slightly pink and hands curled up into loose fists gripping his shirt. You were about to close your eyes before he pulled away, a large smirk formed on his face as he saw you. 

“You need to get back to your paper, I guess i’ll leave you alone”

Bokuto wasn’t at his best today at all. His spikes were off, his serves either hit the net or went out of bounce. Why, you might ask. well today you decided to get up early without waking up your boyfriend and go to school without waking him up. 

You walked into practice, scrolling threw something on your phone. Quickly looking up you gave the team a small smile before going to sit on the benches, your eyes going back to your phone. 

Bokuto let out another groan as you did’t give him a hug or a kiss or any type of affection. Akaashi soon caught on to what you were doing and marched over to where you were on the bench.

“Y/n-san stop ignoring bokuto-san,” the dark haired male said making you look up at his tall figure before giving him a small laugh. “how did you figure me out?” you asked while standing up and brushing your skirt. 

“Bokuto gets in his depressed mode when you ignore him,” The younger male stated before turning his body so you could see the spiked haired male whining.

You gave the second year a smile before walking over to your whining boyfriend. 

“kou are you alright?” you asked pressing a kiss to his cheek as he was hunched over. Golden hues locked into yours before Bokuto pulled you into his muscular chest.

“Are you done ignoring me?” his whispered as he nipped your ear.

“Yes sir“ you quietly responded, eyes darting around, making sure no one was looking at the two of you.

“that’s a good girl, now go over there and wait for me. You’ll get what you deserve after practice”

A Smattering of Ideas for a Neji Time-Travel Fic

Okay so I actually wrote the first chapter or two of this like... almost a decade ago probably, but the concept was:

Neji, upon dying, gets sent back, and he's perfectly healthy again, pretty much exactly as he was just before getting mokuton-stabbed... except the seal damage wasn't reversed, so he's blind.

I think he ended up like riiiiiight before the Hyuuga Incident, so about of age with Kakashi & co.

But yeah like imagine telling Hiashi about it.

We have a new Jounin! It's a blind Hyuuga.

His seal is gone! He's technically your nephew.

He needs to be retrained for blindness! He needs to be protected for the information he carries.

He's a time-traveler!

Have fun.

The Hyuuga clan has like a million things going on but future Neji is just finding his younger self and Hinata to cuddle them.

He can't see shit but he Needs To Hug Baby Hinata

She's so small? She needs to be protected?

"Sir, you're blind now." "If Lee can be a ninja without chakra, I can be a ninja without eyes." "Sir. Sir that's--that's not the same thing, you can't--SIR." "I'll ask Hatake for advice." "He's still got half of his--SIR!"

Neji is a genius, if there's anyone who can pivot their entire fighting style from "I can see everything" to "I don't need to see anything" it's someone like him. Especially with the "I need to protect all these smols and be strong enough to force people to take my advice seriously if necessary" motivation

BUT But But for the first few days, it's just like. Sir. I understand you want to protect this small child, but you walked into three walls in the past hour. Please st--sir.

Fun option is "Neji spills all the beans... to Hiashi, not the Hokage."

Hiashi: Okay so like. Give me a few days to come up with a cover story for your existence. Neji: That's fair. Hiashi: Do. Do you want me to send in Hizashi or...? Neji: I'll tell him the truth if you do. Hiashi: That's, uh... that's fine. Neji: Then yes. Please. Hiashi, thoroughly unnerved for a variety of reasons: Right. I'll go do that.

Relevant: "Stop trying to convince me to put the Caged Bird Seal on a man who is already blind."

Since that's the ostensible reasoning of the seal, and like. You can't make that argument about keeping the eyes safe when the eyes don't... work.

Part of me just went "Gai gets injured on a mission and, while waiting out his medical leave, gets assigned to Neji as a guide/sparring partner"

Or, well, not assigned. He's just doing one-armed pushups in the training yard with a cast on half his limbs after breaking out of the hospital and zeros in on Neji like "Ah yes, medically inadvisable training, a Bonding Activity!"

Neji goes from "I can see everything" to "I can't see shit but if you're within arms reach you're fucked"

A lot of it comes down to Neji building up non-Byakugan sensing abilities, I think?

It won't help him read, but it'll sure help him avoid getting punched.

I think that's really the crux of his New Style, however he works it out, instead of having this Massive Range of perfect perception he just trains his other senses until he still has that perfect perception effectively, just in like a two foot radius around his person

and then he goes full Rock Lee and trains speed and reaction time until that two feet is enough

I want Daredevil-style bitchiness at some point, in the "Okay, I'm sure the contract is lovely, but do you have it in braille, perhaps?" sense

And Toph-style stuff

Genma, in the Jounin lounge: "Hey guys I think I've got a design finished for the new tattoo I'm gonna get, what do ya'll think?" 'holds up scroll' Kakashi: "Why would you get a tattoo of an ugly couch?" Genma: "It's not an ugly couch it's the Hokage Monument!" Neji: "It looks perfect to me" Genma: "Thank you! I worked really hard on-..... why do you feel the need to do these things."

Also I want Neji to have the same approach as Matt to a cane. He can make do without it, but it sure does make his life easier when he's off-duty.

Like, yes if he focuses his entire, highly trained person, on perceiving his surroundings, he can sense his way around. But that is very tiring

Like that is a lot of work to be doing, when you are just trying to get to the coffee shop for a bagel

Neji learns Sage Mode solely because he wants to be able to tree-hop again

Neji visits Kakashi like "I can't ask the Inuzuka for this because their dogs are clan-specific, but do you know where I can find a guide dog that can double as a ninken in the field?"

Neji asking Gai to help him pick out a feminine yukata because if ANYONE is going to not judge...

Listen I'm just really invested in what Naruto SD told us about how often Neji cross-dresses

Someone asked me which summons Neji learns Sage Mode from, and 

I mean, Hashirama supposedly just. Learned it? Without summons?

So maybe Neji does that and just learns from Jiraiya or something

Though it's not... particularly safe.

Birdie had the best response

learning it Without a Summon is very much in the vein of Neji's past attitudes towards Special Secret Techniques, given that he learned the Kaiten with no help even though it was a Secret Technique of the Hyuuga.

"I know it's possible to do, so the hard part is already over, the rest is just figuring it out and doing it"

Neji: I'm here, I'm queer, I'm blind as fuck.

Neji hanging out with Gai and Kakashi is, admittedly, not that different from hanging out with Lee and TenTen

Kakashi is a bit more likely to join in on the shenanigans than Tenten was, but he's still just as available for "We're judging you" sessions

Neji, sipping tea as Gai yells: this is my comfort zone.

Neji with a white cane: This is my whacking stick. Hiashi: Don't you mean walking stick? Neji: No.

Because... what ninja wouldn't ensure that any normal part of their daily life was fit for battle.

Like if Karin can hide lockpicks in a photo and a knife in her glasses, Neji can ensure his white cane is suitable for battle.

(Going off the earlier Daredevil comparisons, I’d say this is similar to Matt turning his cane into billy clubs sometimes.)

Neji, assuming the role of Chief Babysitter for SmolNeji and Hinata, senses Lee and Tenten at the park. Nudges SmolNeji: "Go, be friends with them"

SmolNeji, watching Lee faceplant into the dirt while trying to jump off the swing while Tenten chases two boys around with a weird frog she found: ".... why"

Neji: "Just trust me"

Also consider older Neji giving baby Hinata shoulder rides

Baby Hinata is delighted by this whole affair.

More time with big brother, and a new even bigger brother? Best times.

Bigger brother needs help reading sometimes and Hinata is so excited to help. Hiashi even approves because helping older Neji read things like menus and the like is helping Hinata learn how to read, so it benefits everyone.

Consider also: Neji encouraging the smols to play with bby Naruto, a Hyuuga elder (or possibly Hiashi, but I want him to be a confused accomplice) complains exactly once and Neji exudes such a powerful "Do not test me" energy that he just kind of. Drops it.

Neji's attitude towards baby Naruto is somewhere between "They're good dogs Brent" and "I died for him once already, do you think I'd hesitate to kill?" and it depends entirely on how seriously he thinks you're talking shit about him

Neji plays with the smols, including smol Naruto, by just being the Perfect Straight Man. Just taking every nonsense thing Naruto says Completely Seriously and using deadpan reactions to chaos to make them giggle. This drifts into Feels for Naruto when he's the first adult who takes his "I'm gonna be the Hokage" completely seriously

"Of course, chibi-Hokage-sama"

Hiashi: "What.... are you.... doing?" Neji: "Ah, Hiashi-sama. Please exercise caution, the floor has mysteriously transformed into molten rock. I suspect enemy action, but have no further intelligence at this time" SmolNeji, Hinata, and Naruto: 'wild giggling as they dangle from rafters/stand balanced precariously on chairs'

Hiashi takes one step into the room and all the kids start screaming so loud he steps back out in shock

Neji out in Konoha just Causing Shit with plausible deniability

Listen. Neji is PETTY.

Someone describes Naruto as "the annoying blonde child with the whiskers, you know, the skin brat" and Neji says "I'm a sensor and have encountered no demonic chakra"

"okay just avoid the blonde kid with the whiskers"

"I don't know how to tell you this..." 

"Sir, I know you're new in town, but that kid isn't really good news--" "A child can't be news unless they're recently born." "No, I mean, didn't anyone tell you to avoid the blonde kid with the whiskers?" "Naruto's blonde?"

Possibly "Hinata's blonde?"

He just, aggressively misunderstands that any insinuation about Naruto is about the Hyuuga heir instead

Birdie said they like the idea that he uses the aggressive deliberate misunderstanding to force people to either be embarrassed by how they're acting by having to spell it out or give up in quieter shame

Sometimes Neji gets tired of being obtuse and just lets Gai do it for him

Gai babysits on occasion, SmolNeji is aghast, Hinata mostly just confused, Naruto is delighted

Naruto is just Stars In Eyes about Gai

Kakashi: this is not the excuse I expected to have for visiting Naruto but I'm taking it

I have watched Star Wars: Visions!  All of them!  On the whole I was entertained.  As with any anthology like this, there are ones I liked more and ones I liked less.  I'm going to do a very quick, spoiler-lite (no twists or reveals, just general impressions) post-mortem on them in order of how much I enjoyed them.  None of these are canon, but I will also address the question: Could It Be?  Not because that's an indicator of quality, but mostly because it's a fun mental exercise.

I watched these in English across the board.  The dubs were all fine.  We've come a long way in that department.  I tried watching in Japanese but there are no English subtitles that aren't also closed caption, which seems like a ridiculous oversight on Disney's part.

9. Akakiri

Animation is okay.  The story is kind of a mishmash of things and I didn't care much for the direction it took.  Not all of these need to be "Star Wars" as I understand it - part of the appeal of anthology productions is the diversity of points of view.  But this really didn't vibe with me.  Disappointing note to end on since it's the last one in the "season." 3/10

Could It Be Canon: Ehhh, not really.

8. Lop and Ochou

Gorgeous animation, solid premise, weak execution.  The stakes are arbitrary and I didn't feel we got a satisfying story arc.  Things felt rushed in some areas and too slow in others.  I enjoyed the pretty pictures though.  4/10

Could It Be Canon: There's a few elements in there that make me say "no," and the bunny people are not one of them, for the record.

7. T0-B1

This was a cute story.  Lots of cute designs, simple story with a nice message.  The animation isn't really my cup of tea but for what it is it was executed with great artistry.  5/10

Could It Be Canon: Not in a billion years.

6. The Twins

Pretty-looking nonsense.  This is definitely the most "anime" of all the episodes, and I don't necessarily mean that in a good or bad way.  I know the Internet has been dying to see Waifu Grievous in action, but I thought the action was just passing okay.  5.5/10

Could It Be Canon: Hell could freeze over, the heat death of the universe could come and go, and this still would never even remotely approach canon.

5. The Village Bride

Very pretty, kind of a contemplative Thing.  Suffers from a lack of... something.  Like there's a lot going on here, and that's not a bad thing, but it doesn't mesh quite right.  Pacing is off, and the climax is cool but I don't know that all the dominoes that fall necessarily add up right.  6/10

Could It Be Canon: Actually this is one of the more canon-plausible episodes.  You could definitely squint and say some of the elements are just artistic choices rather than hard deviations from how we know canon Star Wars to work.

4. Tatooine Rhapsody

This is kind of a ridiculous premise but you know what, they pulled it off.  The animation is fine, in a cute, exaggerated chibi style that really helps sell the tone of the story they're telling.  I had fun with it.  The fact that its story hinges on a band making music means there is music, and I thought it was not bad.  7/10

Could It Be Canon: Again, it's kind of ridiculous, but nothing in the story technically conflicts with how canon Star Wars actually works.  And think about some of the stuff from the old EU.  Waru makes this look down-to-earth.

3. The Elder

Slow as hell to get to the actual point, and the characterization is laid on pretty damn thick (we get it, the Padawan is trigger-happy), but the payoff is well done and the animation is very solid.  Plus, I think this is the first time we see trakata (tactically turning off and reigniting a lightsaber) actually used on-screen basically ever.  7.5/10

Could It Be Canon: Absolutely 100% could be canon.

2. The Ninth Jedi

Really beautiful animation, excellent premise and payoff, and good pacing.  I have basically nothing bad to say about this one except that I would have liked more of this story, since they left us with many directions they could go.  9/10

Could It Be Canon: Ehhhh, no.  The central premise of the story is predicated on the idea that a situation could come into being where lightsabers are lost technology.  From everything we know about lightsabers in both old and new canon, the hardest part about making them is acquiring a crystal and then attuning it using the Force.  If you're Force-sensitive and you're even moderately tech-savvy, you should be able to figure it out.

1. The Duel

I would rather have ended on this one, because it is the best by *far.*  Gorgeous animation that seamlessly blends Kurosawa-style samurai cinema with Star Wars aesthetics in the best possible way.  The story is simple, but effective, and the pacing is dead on.  This is what I signed up for when I pressed "play" on Visions and it delivered.  11/10

Could It Be Canon: Not really.  There's a little too much here that can't just be hand-waved away as artistic choices.  But I would watch or read the hell out of something set in this "version" of Star Wars.

Art Practice! I’m trying to get back into the swing of drawing babus for my big commissions I’m starting and so I’m doing a few study pieces of some very old Honeycrisp Tales entries - (and a few older pieces of art of her from other people, from before her style was developed to the degree that it is now - thank you @scisetdiary / @adgerelli for suggesting the top row images!) - and I figure why not share with y’all, so that the blog gets a good dusting off from time-to-time, a lot of you are concerned I’m stopping the blog and no, Honeycrisp is my Emotional Support OC™, I’m just dealing with a lot in my personal life and trying to keep afloat.

It’s helpful for shaking off the cobwebs to this style, these studies, and it also helps me feel more confident! I mean, look at the improvement! It’s hard to notice when you don’t go back and look at your old work often (which I don’t) - All this improvement in what I’m told is a short amount of time, I wouldn’t know, time is fake and also chaos imo. 

I am glad I keep at this whole art thing, and I enjoy the journey of improving what I can do, and revisiting where I was! :) ... Also boy-oh-boy, do I adore this tiny pink apple. Anyway! Rambling about art under the cut!

1.) + 2.) I’m super excited that I can draw near-Adge level now - I used to dream of making my completed pieces have as much charm and energy as these sketches have, and I think I did them justice! I also still steal how you used to shade Adge, and I don’t regret it.

3.) I felt so guilty drawing her so sad! It was a fun exercise though, in regards to stretching her expressions and learning how hands work - the 2020 version is how the 2017 version looked in my head, and I didn’t know how to execute that - I was also focused more on making her cute, so I didn’t want to stretch her face and distort it. Now I’m... less... hung up on that. I think she looks sadder and cuter for it! More like a real character! Plus, I love how she grasps her hair now, as opposed to, y’know, awkwardly pressing it to her chest. 

4.) Still not entirely sure about how I draw male characters, I try, but my skillset is very skewed toward cutesy chibi-esque figures... which is very much not Big Macintosh over here. I don’t know if he’s exactly how I imagine him in my brain, if I can manage that, but at least he looks correct to my eyes in regards to a male figure, which is a start! I’ve also suddenly learned side profile, honestly just a few months ago, and they actually look like proper faces now, rather than melted lollipop heads as before. And my posing improved a great deal as well, she has a lot more character now that I’ve started breaking my self-imposed ‘Cute Above All Else’ principles. She’s got a lot more life to her now, and never does she not look cute, but now she looks much more the version of her that exists in my head and hopefully I can expand her character going forward, now that I don’t fear as much stepping out of my comfort zone with her appearance.

[Review] Chibi-Robo: Let’s Go Photo (3DS)

A failed experiment.

I’ve tried a Chibi-Robo game before, the DS title Park Patrol. I gave up on it shortly as it didn’t include the fun “explore and clean up a house as a little robot” factor, instead focusing on managing a large outdoor space. This gimmicky, tedious 3DS entry (sorry, am I showing my hand?) does technically contain these mechanics, albeit relegated to a small corner of the experience.

The bulk of gameplay is doing repetitive minigames to earn Happy Points, which are used to buy individual film units. You then cash these in for a chance at a camera-based AR minigame. Using the 3DS’s underpowered and low-res camera, you line up an outline with a real-world object, trying to convert it to a “NostalJunk” for display. This is a notoriously finicky process, requiring the lighting to be just right and for maximum contrast around the outline of the object. I ended up using an outside resource for most of this, a gallery of the templates from the game that are more likely to give a successful match, although some are missing or were changed in the localised version.

Clearly this is a novel attempt to use aspects of the 3DS’s unique hardware, it’s just too strict. Trying to actually engage with it as intended often results in a less-than perfect match, which has a RANDOM CHANCE of giving you a dud, which means all the effort spent gathering points, all the loading screens and endless dialogue and confirmation boxes, are a complete waste of the player’s time. And if you have preferred minigames, well that’s too bad: your selection is determined by which job offers the game deigns to throw at you, if there’s any at all. Sometimes you just have to visit the gallery, or do an “area explore”while waiting for the more lucrative minigames to become available.

These exploration segments are what I really wanted, the closest thing to the mechanics of the first (GCN) and third (DS) games. Only here, the areas are miniscule and barely worth exploring, the camera is way zoomed in and finicky, the usual energy mechanic is unbalanced (you run out way too quickly at the start, and you can only recharge in the hub), and by cleaning up and talking to people you get a paltry amount of Happy Points. There’s only five tiny areas to choose from, disconnected from the museum hub setting, and they just left me wanting more.

The game is set in a nebulous future, with the AR feature being a way for people to reconnect or reminisce about everyday objects from the past. It’s a decent premise that lets them do some Pikmin 2-style humorous descriptions of these objects in the gallery, but it’s a little vague and unclear since the actual locations you visit just seem prosaic and present-day. As usual for the series, there’s an eccentric human you have to help out, an overly chatty assistant (this time a talking smartphone), and a cast of living toys to interact with who all have bland, one-note personalities, although I got a few smiles from the camp sauce bottles. It’s these toy characters who give you minigame missions, which range from tedious to infuriating (the success of one relies on a literal one in eight RANDOM CHANCE).

These minigames are things like shooting galleries, judging the length of a measuring tape, a really bad car one that is just pressing one button at the right time, etc. The sauce bottles one involves picking the right ingredients from a fridge, which is either mindlessly trivial or brain-meltingly obscure (some of the eggs in the carton are hardboiled—signified by a very minor visual difference difficult to discern on a 3DS screen—and thus unsuitable for a full English breakfast). A sponge animal asks you to clean a room, which is the same as exploration with the same problems. The characters also pop up in the exploration areas and sometimes quiz you, although how you’re ever supposed to know some of the answers is beyond me.

So a lot of the game is an exercise in frustration, only exacerbated by the typical Nintendo-isms of interminable tutorialising and textual waffling, not to mention the poor framerate and muddy textures. It’s just not a good game, although there’s some decent ideas in there. The main point I want to make is about the follow-up 2D platformer, Zip Lash. I heard complaints about game design choices there where you’re unable to choose which level to play, rather it’s assigned to you by a roulette wheel. Having RANDOM CHANCE be a core mechanic wasn’t an innovation of that game: those issues exist here, with your efforts being randomly unrewarded and only being able to do the missions the game decides to let you, along with mechanics that are a crapshoot, or feel like it due to dodgy implementation. Avoid this.

I had a lot of fun drawing tactics-style pictures!  And was commissioned to do a lot of emotes (thank you guys! those are always fun).  FFXIV and Monster hunter continue to be my favorite art subjects.  My most popular pictures seem to be of the small, fluffy genre... xD

Last year I learned how to do a few new things!  2017′s experiment with Live2d brought out a love of animation:  I made Facerigs out of my art (January’s Chi and March’s Moogle), and started dipping my toes into AfterEffects (April’s Shan and June’s Baby Dragon).  I’ve poked about Wallpaper Engine, too!

When it comes to setting goals for this year, I want to continue learning new things but I also want to master the tools I just picked up. ClipStudio Paint.  I’ve bought the program, but I’ve been too shy to really throw myself into it and art. The brush and painting tools look really awesome xD

Make a music video in AfterEffects.  Yan managed to beat me to the finish line on this one but I still want to begin my FFXIV music video.  I’m not too disappointed in not starting it last year though - I’ve become more confident in animation, so the project doesn’t feel so daunting as before.

Draw more round fluffy things.  I’ll just check this one off as an easy win.

Not chibies???  A bit of a stretch, honestly, probably won’t happen.

Growth wise, drawing something that isn’t a round, fluffy, small thing is going to give my art the most exercise xD
