I only just realized something…John and I are like a weird domesticated bobcat or fox and a big pitbull-herding mix that just, kinda grew up together. I don’t know how else to explain it. I mean, I love dad, and I love mama…but the city, the hotel…it just didn’t fit.

I was never “home” unless I was in the woods or at Jardani’s heels. Never once doubted it was home or where I was supposed to be. He herded me about and taught me that my “claws” weren’t a bad thing, even though he hoped I never had to use them. Bit him all up and he never cared or fussed at me, just took it and even smiled about it.

I didn’t want him to know I was sick, especially not after he met Mrs Helen. She was so pretty and nice and made Jardani happy. He had enough to worry about. She was sick, too, after all. She was his lady, I was just some wild kid who barely stumbled out of trouble and followed him around.

Didn’t want Viggo to have any excuse to pull him out of retirement, so I took his place, despite being sick. Took care of the Tarasov boy as best I could…damn it all, if Iosef hadn’t gone off and did what he done to J…I wouldn’t have had to turn my back on the young man who saw me as his own mama, despite being a couple years older than me, just because I couldn’t bear to pick a side. A boy I killed for not a year before and two years before that. I would have had blood on my hands either way.

I got my boys, the lastborns, middle borns, and orphans dragged into the old high table world, but MY boy is gone. Should have taken Viggo out when I had the shot, but hindsight is 20/20. Viggo should have been the one to die that day instead of following Iosef into death. I could have at least tried to save him, but now he’s gone. At least he didn’t have to be buried by his shit father.

With all that said, I won’t lose Jardani. I can’t lose anyone else and a cowardly trespasser like you won’t take my home. May the icy lake of traitors in the lowest circle of hell encase Shikalov. I worked too damn hard. Just don’t forget, even medics sometimes have to take lives.

Sadie was born to upperclass parents, with two other half siblings. Growing up, she spent most of her time as a child dedicated to learning about history and music. Eventually, she met the DJ who is still a close friend of hers. She wanted to try everything in life— landing her a job as a hitwoman. 

She had everything in life, and should have been content but her mind was naturally curious and she itched to do greater things and after being a ruthless hitwoman, she eventually settled as a concierge for the London Continental, accepting that life can only give her what she needs.

Her true name is unknown, but those acquainted with "The Belle of the Bowery" just call her Belle. The Bowery King personally recruited her when she was an 18-year-old runaway escaping from the High Table, much like John once was. She's now 29. She manages the New Jersey branch in Bellwood Mall, the origin of her nickname. Belle has a flair for 90s nostalgia and takes full advantage of the Bowery's location in an abandoned mall, keeping it as well maintained as possible. Despite her playful aesthetic (would absolutely shop at Claire's), she's extremely deadly in a gunfight. She's a reckless, thrill seeking, rebellious lesbian. She has a passionate hatred for the High Table, and revels in the chaos John has caused.

i said watching tokyo revengers was gonna make me insane again. so, new - very basic - outlines for ocs while i finish up the first season (and probably rewatch the live action movie).

usagi gouriki — draken ship. emma’s best friend since early childhood, follows her around ‘like a shadow’. dresses in ‘delinquent’ styles so people will think she’s tough and leave her alone but is actually pretty soft-spoken and shy. tries to stay out of delinquent business but keeps getting dragged back in. 'unfortunately' develops a crush on draken and is struggling to hide it from emma and feels guilty about it. live action fc: rina sawayama.

rumika baji — kazutora ship. baji’s year-younger sister that he demands stay away from toman’s (and later valhalla’s) business 'for her protection' and warns everyone that nobody better lay so much as a finger on her, apparently kazutora missed that message. likes pink, like ‘dyed her hair pink’ likes pink. a bit of a crybaby when she was younger, especially when it came to her brother. not a terrible fighter, but definitely better in arguments. live action fc: nana komatsu.

i'm back home and have thoughts about joh.n wick things, but more specifically akira

because akira was not subtle in her disapproval of sheltering john but it's the respect & overall trust for her father ( and with it the traditional principles that he holds that overwhelm that of the high tables ) that ultimately has her give in--if you can even call it that. she was shoved into battle with her only option being that of fighting by her fathers orders or dying against them, which if she somehow ended up surviving would be dead to him. arguably worse. i just think it was a very unique way to demonstrate the generational gap of priorities that is talked about between that of elders and the younger generation that are of asian descent, but obviously more specifically japanese, that exists outside the realm of john wick and fictional media. without getting into everything the gist we see with akira and koji were were their concerns over saving their own skin or aiding john with the clear foresight of the consequences were they to do so. from the older generation its quick to label the youth spineless and selfish, and from the younger generation those that are older are carrying a holier-than-thou attitude and an almost insincere amount of altruism that hypocrises their self-proclaimed family-orientedness. these are all very loose, exaggerated terms and both akira and koji’s beliefs are justified through many lenses, with the way the world they exist in is built i believe they are closer than most father-daughter relationships and recognize what fuels their respective actions, but i also think they both realize koji’s word is final so many things are left unsaid that can potentially turn into resentment. were they ever to make it that far..

i also think it’s important to note ( bc if you’ve talked to me at any length i wont shut up about restrictions in culture roles ) that akira is a daughter, and while that’s obvious i feel the need to reiterate that she’s a japanese daughter, in an arguably(?) male-oriented field of work. she is having her strings pulled by men in her life, majority being koji obviously, and while they share a father-daughter dynamic that is closer than most i dont think it’s entirely absent of these gender and hierarchical roles. whether she submits to koji’s wishes due to being her father or male superior is irrelevant. john ultimately pulls the strings that have her help him escape the continental, and caine is stringing her along through a path of revenge. it doesn’t matter whether these were intentional or not, the whole purpose is that all three of them just happen to be men interacting with her in some way, and yet through all the thousands of people involved in this line of work these three individuals that end up completely ruining her were men whose priorities overshadowed that of her own life. and she wasn’t even involved to begin with. it’s the words she snaps back at koji, the glares she throws at john, and the ambiguous end credit scene with caine, that drive the fact she is, was, ultimately in a role that could not do much. i wish i had the brain capacity to say what i legitimately adore about akira’s narrative but i am still jet-lagged so we move on to caine..

every piece of her anger is being directed towards caine, i think that goes without saying, and just because she does not strike at john in the train its clear she hates him equally as so, perhaps even more if she takes in his domino effect of coming to koji for help, and maybe even after hearing both john and caine are let go due to the duel..BUT ANYWAY i really adore caine in the fact he recognizes the pain and vengeance that comes from spilled family blood. and he recognizes akira’s intentions instantly, tells her he’ll be seeing her soon and AUUGHGAJGHDS i just. love it. i love it and it hurts me but i love it. there is a unique pain of doing what you have to, what you're personally against, and still going through w/ it. especially w/ caine, koji, and johns strong brotherhood..it just.HURTS WOW. and akira is fucking thrown into the shit storm of it all..

why does sparing the life of the person you've spent years tracking down for revenge have to be about mercy and "not being just like them"? what about your mental health? what about your self-destructive quest for vengeance? your loved ones' concern for you? the consequences of staking your whole being on the life or death of someone you hate? your unhealthy personal investment in killing this one person? breaking the cycle of violence and/or fighting sunk cost fallacy? what if, after all that effort, you just don't feel like doing it anymore?

ACESPEC ORIGINAL CHARACTERS EVENT FOR ACE WEEK 2023!

ACE WEEK is from 22nd to 28th October this year!! That's around the corner btw.

Back in the old Twitter days, I used to summon acespec creators to join me in a thread of their own acespec OCs with the goal of meeting more ace creators, their OCs, their projects and making friends! I thought it would be a great idea to bring the event to Tumblr this time... WITH NEW RULES!

So, during the ACE WEEK 2023, I want you to show the world your ACESPEC ORIGINAL CHARACTERS!

I want to see artwork of them, especially if it's made by you, and please add some cool info about them, it can be any silly detail, but I encourage you to talk about their asexuality and experiences, and it would be super interesting to know if your own asexuality affected the creation of the character. Tell us about their story, if they have any, and if they belong to a project you are working on. This will take place during the whole week, so no rush. why do some popular things have such small fandoms, in your opinion? like, John Wick is incredibly popular but has less than 2k fics on ao3 and there doesn't seem to be a big fandom presence on tumblr. there's shows with 10+ seasons that have incredibly small fandoms as well.

i know not every fandom is going to be, say, Harry Potter or Supernatural levels (especially if it's an older show and fics have been lost to time- i've heard ER lost quite a lot) but it's just... odd to me, i guess.

The majority of things don't get fanfic fandoms.

There are some trends though. Certain genres are more likely to generate them than others. SFF is pretty likely. Crime dramas are reasonably likely, whether that's people slashing buddy cops on AO3 or lead canon het on FFN.

Incomplete-feeling canons are a bit more likely, usually due to plot holes or a crappy ending that people want to fix—but not so crappy that everyone just gives up in disgust.

Relatedly, things where the art part isn't too intimidating are more likely than ones where the big draw is that author's exact way of writing or the fantastically subtle and moving acting in some arty movie about social issues.

Serial media are way, way more likely to generate a fic fandom than one-offs, and having a certain number of hiatuses but not ones that are too long helps. You want some gaps where people have time to make stuff before it's instantly jossed, but you do need new canon to reinvigorate a fandom periodically.

Things just being well known by lots of people does help relative to a similar canon that few people saw, but exact audience size isn't the main factor.

Some tasty character dynamics help a lot. Maybe shippy, maybe more found family. A world that people want to play more with also helps. Even the gen-focused fandoms tend to care a lot about the latter two. They don't just write about any old canon. There have to be certain hooks.

John Wick does seem like it fits some of the standard criteria. There's more than one movie. It's fun, dumb genre stuff, not super high art.

TBH, having more than like 5 fics already means it's a success as a fic fandom, so part of it is just your frame of reference. I know you say you don't expect HP, but you should be expecting the norm to be way under 100 fics, not nearly 2k. That's part of it.

But I suspect the big reason is that a lot of people find the films relatively complete as-is.

They're set in the real world (-ish), so the setting isn't that interesting to explore with a bunch of OCs in the way that people write their own HP or Naruto casts. People like the lead, but I don't think they fixate on his relationships to other characters. (Checking AO3, it looks like some people are writing basically John/self, which makes sense.)

For much of the audience, it's all about watching him use a lot of guns. So many guns. All of the guns.

Once the big screen spectacle is done, I don't know that people really want more unless it's more action movies with more visual awesomeness.

IDK, I don't think I've seen any of these beyond some clips, so maybe I'm missing something.
