I was late to that fandom (I finally watched the show spring of 2021), but it was so worth the wait, and honestly sometimes it's nice to show up late, reblog some gifsets, read some fic, and not feel pressured to publicly engage apart from that. The most recent episode of Interview with a Vampire let's us see Lestat's side of the story and see how it compares to Louis' accounting of their relationship. As a result, it reaffirms just how unreliable of a narrator Louis is, but it also further illuminates elements of his character that the director and writers have been playing with since the beginning of the show.

There's this part in the episode where Lestat turns to Louis and apologizes and it's framed with Lestat turned to Louis on one side and Claudia on his other side. They're the angel and devil on Louis' shoulders, but who is the angel and who is the devil? And as my friend said, Armand and Daniel are placed into that same dynamic with Louis later on. We are being asked to decide who to trust, who's telling the truth, who's the good guy, but the fact of unreliability robs us of that decision.

This whole story is about Louis, he's the protagonist, though not the narrator, and he is constantly being pulled in two directions, no matter when or where he is in his story. He's a mind split in two, divided by nature and circumstance. He's vampire and human, owner and owned, father and child, angel and devil. He's both telling the story and being told the story. His history is a story he tells himself, and as we've seen, sometimes that story is not whole.

Louis is the angel who saved Claudia from the fire but he's also the devil who sentenced her to an life of endless torment, the adult trapped in the body of a child. He's the angel who rescued Lestat from his grief and also the devil who abandoned him, who couldn't love him, could only kill and leave him.

He's pulled in two directions, internally and externally at all times and so it's no wonder that he feels the need to confess, first to the priest, then Daniel, and then Daniel again.

He's desperate to be heard, a Black man with power in Jim Crow America who's controlled by his position as someone with a seat at the table but one who will never be considered equal. He doesn't belong to the Black community or the white community, he can't. He acts as a go-between, a bridge, one who is pushed and pulled until he can't take it anymore. He's a fledgling child to an undead father, he's a young queer man discovering his sexual identity with an infinitely experienced partner. He's confessing because he wants to be absolved, that human part of him that was raised Catholic, that child who believed, he wants to be saved. He wants to be seen.

Louis wants to attain a forever life that is morally pure, but he can't. He's been soiled by sin, by "the devil," as he calls Lestat, and he can never be clean again. Deep down, I think he knows this, but he can't stop trying to repent. He tries to self-flagellate by staying with Lestat and then tries to repent by killing him, but can't actually follow through. He follows Claudia to Europe to try and assuage his guilt. He sets himself on fire, attempts to burn himself at the stake, to purify his body, rid himself of the dark gift.

Louis is a man endlessly trying to account for the pain he has caused and he ultimately fails, over and over again, because he can't get rid of what he is. A monster. He's an endlessly hungry monster. He's hungry for love, for respect, for power, for forgiveness, for death. He's a hole that can never be filled. He can never truly acquire any of those things because he will always be punishing himself for wanting and needing them in the first place. He will never truly believe he deserves them and as a result, can't accept them if they are ever offered. He can never be absolved for he has damned himself by accepting the dark gift and thus has tainted himself past the point of saving.

Hello! I love your ORV posting. I do have an embarrassing question; can I ask how heartbreaking the ending is? I've tried reading it a large number of times, but have had trouble getting past the chapters in the 300s; I'll reread it up til that point over and over again, but can't continue. Not because I don't enjoy it, but because I get so swept away by the emotions, and all the characters go through is agonizing. I know it's not real! But my heart aches all the same, in a way I've never experienced this with a novel before, and I feel like a child LOL (It's also extremely funny-frustrating because I realize how thematic this is to the story itself). I'm not worried about the characters Kim Dokja is fighting for, but given the patterns in the story and how it seems to be told, I'm too afraid to keep going. I know I could just look it up, but at the same time, I don't want to spoil all the mysteries; just if my heart can rest easy. TLDR, if it's not too spoilery, is there any light for kim dokja in the ending? or is it a tragedy through & through?

oh boy anon, I've been sitting on this ask for a hot second because it's hard to answer! so I will attempt to talk around it in a way that will hopefully (?) avoid spoilers

as I see it, the nature of orv's ending (broadly writ) is additionally complicated by the fact that there are approximately four(ish) endings:

1) the ending at chapter 516

2 + 3) the ending(s) at chapter 551

4?) the side stories

the ending at chapter 516

this is probably what many people would characterize as BE, but I'd personally compare it to the ending of my love, my life, 《琅琊榜》 Nirvana in Fire, in that the ending may be "sad" (broad air quotes to vague-ify whatever "sad" entails) but it feels earned. it feels right. it feels like the logical conclusion of what the entire book was building up to. some may consider it a tragedy, but it's not a hollow, meaningless tragedy — it feels correct. this is the note that the novel officially ends on, but is then over(?)written by the existence of—

the ending(s) at chapter 551

Kim Dokja's Company looks at the ending of ch. 516 and says "aw hell no" and sets out to rewrite that ending. after 35 chapters of epilogue, we've unlocked an OE — an open ending, that concludes the moment before the HE/BE ambiguity will be resolved. schrodinger's ending, except you, the reader, get to choose what you believe — and I do think the epilogues are written beautifully to get you here (they implicate the reader in a wonderful and deeply empathetic way). and from what I've seen, the vast majority of the fandom chooses to take the offered HE option and run with it; everyone lives happily ever after together in a big house, a million domestic post-canon fics will attest. this is the closest, I'd say, that would come answering your question of whether Kim Dokja has light in his future with an emphatic, loving "yes"

(I also think it's worth mentioning that the epilogues add a lot to the story; they fill in narrative lacunae and tie up loose threads that aren't answered in the original 516 chapters, so I don't consider the epilogues as "separate" or "extra." the epilogues aren't a fix-it tacked onto the end of the narrative; they serve and enrich the narrative in a way that would actively reduce the luster of the story if lost)

the side story

a few years down the line, Sing-shong have returned to the text to tie up "a few more loose ends." the side story is currently being serialized, and more or less picks up from where chapter 551 left off. this necessarily chooses among your OE options as detailed above; whether the side story will end happily, or with "light for Kim Dokja," currently remains to be seen as it is still ongoing. I've fallen off the bandwagon and have been meaning to catch up, but from what I've read so far I think the side story is an interesting and worthwhile addition to the text. Sing-shong continue to innovate and develop upon the worldbuilding and narrative they have already created, and we have met a new cast of characters that have rapidly become as dear to us as the old (the old cast of characters are also here, don't worry). if I were a betting person, I would say that the side story is headed in a more-or-less HE direction; the side story is currently engaging with and complicating themes of (self-)identity and (self-)worth through the many lenses of Kim Dokja, and while it remains to be seen how it resolves, I am tentatively optimistic that it will, if nothing else, be satisfying

TL;DR the ending(s) of ORV can be variously construed as HE, BE, or OE, and the elements of tragedy woven into the narrative and characters are inherent to the text. however, no tragedy is meaningless in ORV, and all of the endings feel earned

that kid was supposed to be QUIET! eaten alive by guilt! but not eloquent enough to try and get people on his side for it! he was an absolute loner but not in the "i hate you all and im cool and sassy and show people up in a way the audience 1:1 agrees with (basically just spelling out the moral counter argument against the games)"-way, in the "i know i don't belong here and i have imposter syndrome because none of the capitol folks accept me and my family and they let us know directly and in no uncertain terms all day every day and i also don't want to be here i wish we'd never left 2".

and the REAL tragedy of sejanus plinth is this: that his moral compass puts him off everyone at the capitol bc they're all snakes and he knows it - BUT he thinks that the one person who's the biggest snake of them all is good. he's naive and dumb and stupid and trusting, and snow feeds on his affection and attention the way you'd pet a kicked puppy on the head and feel good about yourself.

EO3 (partial) lineup - November-December 2022

Peak MAbo is collaborating with your best friend for a(n admittedly unfair) final project (for web development!!!! an elective!!!), saying you would post it, forgetting about it for a year, posting it on Artstation and forgetting about it again.

As always, AC drew the lineart, and I colored. Designs were more of a collaborative effort between the two of us!

Probably should have shared this when the HD collection came out... anyway it's here now!

Some design ramblings under the cut :0! There's a lot i wanna share especially given that we recently did a soft rewrite that departed from the guild system entirely ^^" and EO3's cast was actually one of the first that we had, surprisingly!

Micah is quite clearly alt gladiator 3, but in an entirely different profession. instead of going into the labyrinth, he works in what i imagine would be an analogue to the forge in Tharsis (aka helping people make things busted af). It probably works best for his character, since he was always a gizmo freak even in his first iteration! geomagnetic (or submagnetic, ugh) gizmo is AC's idea!

Micah's brother, Eva, is a very loose spin on zodiac 3, but with a wayyyy lighter colour palette. Admittedly, i did steal a little bit of the spiritmaster's coat from bravely default, but AC managed to spin it back to resembling the original coat that the class had. Eva works as an astronomer, hence the little telescope he always has on him.

Next up we have Eva's protégé, Miri (who was imported from AC's stories)! Theoretically, Miri would be a second zodiac, and, after watching some EO3 speedruns, would probably be really strong in the earlygame when working with Eva in an actual playthrough. AC's design heavily borrows from Patho II's Grace, hence the coat + dress combo.

Following Miri in this lineup would be Noa, her admittedly very lazy but clingy sibling. I think it's apparently here that we didn't have much time to filter what a believable design would be in an EO setting, given that Noa's clothes were translated directly from our designs of them in school attire. It's actually funny how for we diverged from their original portrait (buccaneer 3) to the point that she is literally unrecognizable. Truly a pipeline from good sea boy to j-horror twist character.

Last in the OC section would be Masaru, who recently found work for the Senatus. Admittedly he does have another example of "incongruent time period" clothing (the jacket), though it's a lot more reworkable than Noa. We also made his design a lot less poofy and rugged compared to the original, and I mixed the base and alt color palettes as well to make him less, well, glaringly red. Probably one of the funnier things is that his clothing palette made him blend in more with the likes of Kujura, but given that they work for the same place, it'll probably work out fine.

Now we go onto NPCs, and who better to start than with Flowdia! Admittedly, her art was one of the last ones that we did, hence why her design looks relatively plain (sorry lola). Probably one of the things I would like to add would be more ornate patterns, perhaps of butterflies to tie her closer to Gutrune!

Before we get to the Princess, we gotta get through her bodyguard first! >:0 I honestly don't like Kujura because I answered honestly in his first question, and he said that I was prideful, but AC likes him so he looks really good here. He isn't as rendered here as he is in his portrait, since he was also one of the last characters we made, and I didn't really get to notice that he doesn't have as much value contrast in his clothing as Masaru does. Probably something to think about next time I color him >:0

Next up we have Gutrune!! We decided to make her look more jellyfish-like, while still keeping it a bit uncanny and unsettling. We tried to give her a more traditionally Filipiniana look (mostly on the Maria Clara gown), but we haven't yet made a poncho design that mixes well with butterfly sleeves without looking cluttered. As such, she has a more nightdress-y look here. AC drew in a few tentacles, and I couldn't help but make them look squishy.

Last but not least is Olympia! We wanted to align her appearance more with her background, hence her altered design :0 Having rips of the artbook easily accesible online also helped us flesh out her hair in particular, since we didn't want to just transplant Gutrune's hairstyle onto her.

And that's all of them!!! I'm honestly hoping to draw more EO characters, though Seyfried's design scares me (honestly the reason why I couldn't make a Reversed Emperor comic).

Currently, I've made a lot of progress on the EO4 game, and I'm excited to draw up the three N-turned-PCs + Xiuan >:'0!!! I don't think I can ever get as cool as Morika tho. Shinsou unlocks the front door and hurries inside to take shelter from the biting wind. It’s been another cold day and he can’t help the shiver that runs down his spine upon feeling the temperature change inside the entrance of your shared home. He drops his sports bag and huffs out breaths into his palms to heat them back up – maybe he can tuck them safely around your waist and regain warmth from cuddles. He can’t help but smile at the thought.

“I’m home!”

He waits for your reply as he toes off his shoes at the genkan but none comes. He calls out your name and a low, “I’m in here!” is heard from the direction of the bedroom. He cocks up an eyebrow before making his way through your home to check what you’re up to. On the way through the living room he stops by the scratching post to greet Flour who eagerly purrs and butts into his open palm. In a high-pitched voice he asks the feline about his day and tells him how much he’s missed him. Dramatically, he gives a short re-telling of his shift and how he apprehended a villain with no shortages in sound effects. Shinsou won’t admit it, but he half expects and hopes that you’re leaning up against the doorframe, smiling at him and in a teasing voice, will tell him he’s cute. When he looks up to check, you aren’t there and his brows furrow before a pout forms.

When Flour jumps down from the post, stretches, and continues to the kitchen, Shinsou decides to continue his quest to receiving head scratches himself as he holds you close – it’s 11pm and he’s had an all-day shift due to shortage at the agency. Yesterday, you had a night shift, so he hasn’t actually seen you in well over 24 hours.

 In the bedroom you’re sitting in a thinking position with your legs propped underneath you, your head rested in your palm as you’re eyeing several items on the bed with an almost comical seriousness. He repeats his words from when he arrived with a quizzical look, “I’m home?”

Shinsou likes family-related traditions – having someone to announce he’s home to fills him with a soft love that he can’t quite place other than in the deepest parts of his heart and you know this. So when you’re so caught up in something else, he can’t help the way his underlip juts out. He’s well aware that he’s being a baby.

“Ah, yeah, sorry babe, welcome home,” you reply without even looking at him before you pick up a plushie. Upon further inspection Shinsou recognizes the design – he hasn’t seen it in plushie-form before, but the color scheme and patterns make him smile brightly as pride fills his chest.

“Is that an Eri plushie?”

You smile and nod, “this is the prototypes. It’s her first merch so she’s so nervous she asked me to look them over,” you explain as you turn the soft doll version of his little sister around in your palm. “…there’s something about the color of her eyes on this though, it’s off.”

Shinsou shuffles over to the side of the bed to take a look – but with only the nightlamp on, he can’t really tell much, so with a chuckle he goes to turn on the overhead lights – you must’ve sat here for a long time if you haven’t turned them on yourself. You continue to inspect the items with a scrutiny and seriousness he admires – he really does, but…

He can’t be faulted for wanting a kiss and a hug from his favorite person after so long, can he?

 He huffs out a breath before sitting down on the side of the bed – your side, specifically, to see if he can get a reaction from you.

There’s none.

So he flops down on his back, his head landing by your hip as he huffs out another – more dramatic and louder – breath. After a few seconds of nothing, he chances a look up at you, who’s now moved on to some keychains with your lip sucked in to nibble on.

He stretches his arms over his head and groans, pretending to be sore and lets them fall down like deadweight by his sides, secretly peeking up at you, gauging your reaction. Maybe you’ll ask if he’s had a long day.

Once again, he’s rewarded absolute fuck all.

He whines your name and turns to lie on his stomach, wrapping his arms around your waist. His legs hang from the bed. You laugh, “what’s up, babe?”

What’s up?

He groans and presses his head into your hip to hide his embarrassment, “you’re ignoring me.”

He feels one of your hands travel through his hair, lightly scratching his scalp and if he could purr, he would be doing so as he leans into your touch, “I want to give her thorough feedback so she won’t be unhappy with how it’ll look in the stores and the deadline is tonight,” you explain, turning a headband around in your palm that’s based on the headgear of her costume. Shinsou sighs loudly to make a point, “you can still go through it all in time while giving me a welcome home kiss.”

You chuckle before grabbing his ear and pulling it back and forth as you turn and lean down, “welcome home my love,” you say with a hint of a smile before you kiss the top of his head.

It’s not enough. He grabs you by your shoulders and a surprised noise escapes you as he forcefully lies you down and buries his head in your neck, “need more than a forehead kiss or I’ll start to think you don’t love me.”

He says it with a serious voice but the raspberry he blows into your neck makes you laugh out loud and trash your legs, “Hitoshi, stop!” you plead through desperate breaths as his fingers dance over your sides. Compared to how much he loathes getting tickled, he attacks you way too frequently with it.

When he stops, he looks at you with an almost begging look, “give me a kiss?”

You regain your breath while a hand runs through his hair and down his back, “as many as you want, you big baby.”

You melt into each other as he sighs into the kiss. He feels a smile creeping onto your lips which only makes him press his own harder against yours. When he pulls back, he looks away, “you love me, right?”

The insecurity laced into his question isn’t hard to detect. Shinsou’s been going through a lot of emotional stages in the 10 years you’ve been together so you also know he’s only half-serious right now. You smile and bite your lip to hold back a laugh, “you want Eri’s merch to look good too, right?” you ask back before you continue to answer him, “of course I love you, more than anything.”

“Even more than Eri’s merch?”

This time you don’t hold back your laughter. Shinsou doesn’t mind – he thinks your laugh is the most beautiful sound in the world so he’s never minded you teasing him or being the butt of a joke if it meant you’d let out a laugh for him. His embarrassment subsides and a lovesick smile graces his features as he takes you in. You finish with a chuckle, “a lot more than Eri’s merch.”

“Good, I was just checking.”

“Of course you were, big Mr. Brainwave. Mayhaps I’m just dating you to get to your family, right?”

Shinsou groans and falls back on the bed next to you, unable to continue your banter, “it’s perhaps or maybe, you can’t just combine them.”

You smirk, “mayhaps someone’s a little mangry.”

He jumps up from the bed, “that’s it, I’m leaving your ass. Have fun with your merch and stop hanging out with Denki so much!”

A loud, villainous-like laugh leaves you as you grab onto your own stomach, “not when it’s this fun! Hey, if you’re going to the kitchen can you bring me a water?”

A resonant and firm “no!” is heard throughout the apartment but after a few minutes, a water bottle is thrown towards you in the bed. You blow him a kiss and he give you the middle finger. Both of you look forward to finally sleeping next to each other again tonight.

My ships... I have art stashed but it's really weird. The environment of the internet has shifted drastically over the years, and I think some people take things too seriously. But... I ship things. The X series

I really love the X series to bits! I actually don't ship any of the characters here. I think they're all precious in their own way, though. X and Zero, as a kid, I never really shipped.

But I guess things change over time.

Some people make some wondrous content showing how close the two could actually be. It's endearing...

I don't like Iris's writing or how some people insist she's The One To Ship With Zero. Even if it's suggested like... in minute ways, I just... dunno. It feels like the devs wanted people to ship X and Zero but it was too GAY so they made a female X and said "have at it." Which... is so weird? Everything Zero could've liked about Iris, we see X exhibit those exact traits, AND MORE. It could be the "Zero just might be a heterosexual so he isn't into X", but I mean, if Dmmd taught me anything, it's that seeking out female versions of the guy you're totally not into doesn't work out.

Alia is a cool character! Reducing her to simply X's flat and 2D love interest was... depressing. I loved how she had a kill streak in x6! It made her super interesting. Idk what happened in... was it x8? Like, get that game away from me.

Axl is a cutie pie but he's more husbando material than he is shipping material for me. He just wants to sit at the cool kid's table and managed to nab a seat...

The Zero series

I lost my fucking mind with this series. I went from "I don't ship robots in this cool game" to just mix and matching everyone in every which-way.

Some weirdo freaks got me into shipping Omega Zero with Copy X. Do not ask how that is logical or what could possibly be their dynamic. I just like the aesthetic. It makes no sense. They didn't coexist in the same room. Ever.

Ciel x Fefnir is like my guilty ship. Most of my AUs seem to naturally form some sort of organic bond between them subconsciously. Fefnir, though a hot head, seems like the kind of guy who's a good sport. I like the idea of little ol' Ciel crushing on the football player lookin guy, and he thinks that she's adorable in her own right. You know - X's whole inherent love of humans or whatever I probably made up. That's my justification.

I obviously ship Harpuia and Zero.

Where some people find cyberelf X and Zero to be top shelf, I raise the offer "yes but he can actually touch Harpuia without absorbing him like every other cyberelf". (I will admit I love shipping Cyberelf X with Zero in that very strange maternal-esque "I will embrace your corpse so that you may rest forever" edgelord shit. I snort it daily don't worry.)

Harpuia rescuing Zero for no Fucking Reason in z2 fucked me up. Why'd you do that? What'd you do that for? You picked him up and rode on your shitty little bird to drop him off at the correct address, so you even knew where Ciel and friends were staying? Right after Zero off'd your beloved X? Yeah? You did that why? (I know it's probably related to that whole chapter where Harpuia is nearly a better ruler than Copy X and just makes all the right choices in contrast to his previous ruler blah blah blah) But what if it's because he has programmed into him the same unbreakable love for Zero (platonically) that X had? We know that the guardians get some sort of weird high when fighting Zero so... why not further fuck up that interpretation of X and Zero's relationship?

I really like portraying Harpuia as being the only one who didn't completely cave in and go bonkers from battling Zero. He just sort of kept it inside. Poorly. And it comes out in small amounts via weird actions. Leviathan I portray mostly as a kid with a magnifying glass over some ants, Fefnir as the kinda guy to just be an adrenaline junkie, and Phantom thought it was a flaw in his programming so he blew up.

My only justification of it is either Cyberelf X hates his guts or is Copy X's only friend. And Copy X's emotions are already fucked up like every other inch of his programming.

Ciel and Copy X though I ship them in a familial sense. He's obsessed with protecting her and Ciel is like "I made him! :)" I've got some pics lying around (they're gone) of Ciel reading ancient books to Copy X while he lays in her bed at night. She says it's to help him sleep, but since that isn't How Reploids Work, he's really there to pretend to fall asleep when he notices Ciel is about to. Then when she passes out he stares at her all night, stroking her hair. Like a freak. But please, it's not romantic; I do not want it to be at all. I just want him to be weird.

OG Prometheus and Aile is a new ship. I can't... explain this one? I don't know.

The AU I'm writing has Grey retreive the original body plans for Prometheus and Pandora from the lab he was made in, near end game before Prometheus and Pandora bite the bucket. Presuming that Flueve and friends aboard the Guardian can make bodies themselves (fuck you I don't think Ciel was making new bodies for everyone solo), Grey asks Aile if they can give Pandora and Prometheus a second chance, since they're likely controlled by Model W. She says "what are you smoking". I just like Grey to be selfless in the dumbest ways imaginable.

Pandora and Prometheus dies. I think it is stupid that they get left behind, so I imagine that he used model F megaman form thing to drag them out (like how Aile should've done herself in the first game) flops their corpses at Aile's doorstep and is like "I got the EC to pay for this." And shenanigans happen. They rebuild their old bodies, do some wacky techno shit with their DNA and put it in the new bodies akin to how reploids age in canon (assumption). Prometheus and Pandora wake up as normal ass people.

But they're also lowkey enlsaved by the Guardians because like uhh um uhh ummm "you owe us. but forever" and they're ok with this and something about duplicating model w don't ask It's fucking stupid I'm insecure about it but they can megamerge into their old forms but aren't allowed to go ape shit and prometheus and aile become sorta close in that antagonizing way because she has to watch him closely while pandora hangs out with grey like a little brother and it's all warm and fuzzy and they have no problems (i stole the idea from the stupid japanese site's weird little roleplay things) that's her little buddy you know and don't worry about it i just ship aile and prometheus

My Girouette ships are off limits. I'd be sentenced to death.

I ship Siarnaq and Grey because my AI roleplay partner shoved it onto me with rose prose and I was like "... you know what? this will work". My ship count is being dominated by the sheer number of AUs and oneshots I've written about those two. Ask and I will divulge

of them. But otherwise I'm mmgngngjghgngmgnggnmgngm Really Grey being an unaging kid complicates things. I'm pretty sure he doesn't have a life span, and I do not subscribe to the "reploids naturally grow" head canon because it's pretty stupid to think technology got that far when it was stated in-game that it isn't. that's like Legends shit.

I ship Thetis one-sided with Aile because it's Extremely Funny. No other reason.

I don't really ship anything I just think everyone is precious and adorable. I Guess I like the dynamic between Tronn Bonne and Volnuttsack. It's neat. I don't think about it beyond seeing it on the screen though.
