So! BIG misconception! It/Its users are NOT objects :D Please never refer to us as such! Referring to yourself as an object is a completely different thing and totally unrelated to it/its pronouns! The only difference between an it/its user and a they/them user is their pronouns, nothing is different in relation to the persons identity as a human being!

Yes, an it/its user CAN view themselves as an object, but don't assume we all do. That is a completely different part of our identity which pronouns do not affect :)

'It' is a pronoun just as any other. It/Its users are comfortable being called 'it' in a non-derogatory and non-objectifying way! You can call a person 'it' without dehumanizing/depersonalizing it!

Use it/its pronouns just like any other pronoun! Objectification is not implied in the slightest. It's just a pronoun. He doesn't mean male, she doesn't mean female, and it doesn't mean object.

It's kind of similar to how we give objects their own pronouns. An example would be using "she" or "he" for say, a vehicle, but that does NOT mean that person views their vehicle as a human being.

a vent (feel free to ignore if it's too much!): so recently i've noticed psd makers getting anon asks on whether they're ok with people who write certain topics (mostly rpf, incest, rape, underage, the usual "problematic" topics) using their recourses. now, i don't roleplay any of these subjects on tumblr, so even if a content creator said not to use their stuff, it's not even something i need to worry about - but, and maybe this is me overthinking it, what if i, someday, write a noncon fanfic on ao3? i'm still not using their resources on the subject or writing it on tumblr, but i'd probably feel weird about it, like i'm crossing some boundary. what if a psd maker whose content i've already purchased suddenly goes "actually don't use my psds if you rp abusive relationships", which is probably the closest to what people consider "taboo themes" of the things that i roleplay. it just feels like a fine line between personal boundaries and a shitty situation for a customer - not wanting to cross boundaries but already having PAID for something previously, when no such rules existed. it's making me want to 1. block everyone i see saying this, because even though i don't personally roleplay the topics above, i don't feel SAFE around people who tell others what kind of fiction they are allowed to enjoy and 2. just quit using people's resources and spend years learning to make my own psds so i won't have to worry about this shit. it's just stressing me out, as someone who has been harrassed and bullied online for speaking against censorship. i've had literal sock accounts made just to spew targetted harrassment at me on twitter. i've been accused of being a pedo and supporting incest and this is??? literally for saying "i don't think real people should be harrassed for fictional shit", i've not even shipped underage or incest ships. both make me uncomfortable. but fuck, antis make me 1000000x more uncomfortable than people who ship these kinda ships. i digress, this got rambley, i just. do you have any advice on what to do with the potential psd situation, or am i really just overthinking it? (always worried i accidentally send stuff like this off anon. help)

I need you to know that I actually had to rush-scroll back up and just double check that you did submit on anon lol! I always get worried I'll miss the one person who accidentally didn't use anon, if it makes you feel any better! When someone does submit with their URL attached, I message them first to be sure they are okay with them having it posted that way/it wasn't an accident ;) That's what I would want someone to do!

Alright, so, anyhow...

I've also noticed that becoming a more common thing and it's been on my (maybe huge) list of things to look into for a bit because I really do try to make sure I'm not just noticing things in my areas of the RPC/failing to notice things that do not impact me. Since I do all my edits and graphics, it falls into the first category for me. So, thank you for moving that up the list and informing me that it really is more prevalent and not my imagination!

My take on seeing it was a combination of business logic and anxiety, not going to lie.

On the first: charging to do a psd that is just that, just a psd file being used as a template/to act as an easier version of a photoshop "action" in a way, that's 100% legal and fine. Absolutely no muddy waters there. However, charging to do things like icons, edits, etc. that include images of celebrities and stills from movies (or gifs) is quite muddy. Legally, it's not legal. It's a thing we're allowed to do and use (on most platforms) because we're not making money off of it, we're not claiming to hold rights to the images, and so on - it's ignored but illegal. Charging money for it, however, even when phrased as "for my time" (which, absolutely valid feeling), is a more serious form of illegal and potentially attention-getting. This all gets more iffy though when we add donation instead of direct commission/purchase when working with these copyrighted materials. You can ask people to donate and suggest a donation based on your time spent, and that is always what I advise people to do.

Okay, so, that preface is necessary because the thing about stipulating use-rights is that they're iffy, too, there are variables present.

Often, these same people are charging for things like icon packs as well, meaning that even if they're only charging you for a template-style psd file sans imagery they don't own, they've kind of shot themselves in the foot. Not to mention, it's exceedingly damn hypocritical to pitch a fit about someone violating your rights when you're literally using other people's copyrighted materials lmao And that does tend to occur to me, yeah, it's a consequence of attorney friends and running businesses.

The other issues with this are that usage rights have to be stated at the time of purchase and morality clause-style shit, as pertains to products, is not legally binding.

When you purchase something like a psd file, that purchase acts as a sort of contract.

Think of like...buying a photoshop brush set - the person selling it puts very simple rules as to its use, such as: non-commercial use only, brush pack cannot be resold or distributed for free, separate brushes from the pack cannot be resold or distributed for free individually. Meaning that you own the brushes you bought, but you are not legally allowed to make real-life money from anything you use them in, and you cannot send the whole pack or files individually to friends for free or charge other people for them. By buying these, you have agreed to these stipulations of use and ownership.

If the person sells psd's and you agree to what they've stated about the use (you can't use them to do commissions you make IRL money from, you can't give them away to friends, etc.), that's binding even somewhere as casual as RP Land. The exchange of real currency makes it that serious.

However, there are limits to stipulations of use! One of those things is when you agreed - this person cannot, even one literal second, later change their terms of use and retroactively hold you to them. If they were okay with you not crediting them anywhere or using them in works you will gift others or charge others something like game currency for at the time you purchased, then that's it. Tough shit for them, not you, when they decide a month later that they want credit given where the work appears, that they do not want finished products gifted, or don't want you to make even in-game currency from them.

And that absolutely would apply to the morality wank, yes.

Except that this very morality wank comes with its own issues. Reality is not tumblr. In reality, at least in most instances and countries, you can't throw in a fucking morality clause regarding the buyer, use of item, or finished product.

Think of this in this way: Chik-Fil-A starts denying chicken and waffle fries to anyone suspected of being queer. They're legally allowed to run their business (as a private business, everything does have variables) with some things that are morally objectionable that they feel morally aligns with their religious beliefs. They're not allowed to deny queer workers a job or queer customers service, however, in accordance with overarching laws.

While "being gross" online in fiction is not like, making anyone a protected status person lol this is just an extreme example to drive home the point. Legally, when it comes to items/products be they digital or physical, your rights and responsibilities as the seller don't include your moral policing.

What your right is, is to make people uncomfortable to a degree, yeah. You absolutely can do that. You can state some nasty shit about prospective buyers you don't want. For example, they should (I mean, they should just grow up and get some real concerns, but) be stating that they would not like to see their psd's used by people on this following DNI list of idiocy, and they will block those users if possible to prevent interaction and purchase. That's really it, that's what they can do and the least immature way to proceed.

On the second: none of this logic would make me feel comfortable about interacting with them and their psd's in the future once they had outed themselves as morally objectionable and dangerous to me with this nonsense. And I would still feel anxious about using things I had previously bought because once harassed...it doesn't really go away, does it? It would just give me some ease about the latter with things I'd already made. Like, I could keep using the icons I'd made with those psd's with a little bit more comfort knowing that they honestly have not a leg to stand on outside of their harassment.

I might have the tendency to respond to harassment without much upset, but that doesn't mean I want to be harassed. Especially when I am not doing anything that draws that kind of attention. Not that harassment is warranted over anything, but when I make a PSA or answer an ask that I know is likely to get their attention and piss them off? That's an acceptable risk I am knowingly taking. When I'm just going about my life as a RPer, it isn't.

So, I don't feel like you're overthinking it or being too concerned! In no way did you sign up for getting unwanted attention, and because it has happened before, of course, you're trying to insulate yourself from having it happen again. That's totally reasonable!

Now, what you could do about it...

It's another of those situations in which we're only truly capable of controlling ourselves. Everyone else is kind of a NPC.

You don't have to do anything I'm suggesting, but these are things I would do!

I would block the shit out of anyone saying these things/trying to make them stipulations, yes.

By that, I mean that I would also visit blogs they appear to interact with and they'd be blocked as well. We can all reblog something like resources or a shit post from a user we do not agree with without realizing it, but when it's frequent reblogs, direct support, and friendly vibes going on, it's safer to assume that they are aware their friend sucks. More importantly, that they do not think their friend sucks and support their views.

Even if that is not the case, do you want someone else's repeated inattention to expose you to bad actors? Nope! So, don't run the risk of paying and otherwise interacting with the one resource blog in the group that doesn't express these views/"requirements," but does involve themselves with those who do.

Try to find people selling these resources, that are not connected to the problem ones, who do not have those views. Once a trend starts, it is very hard to stop until it has run its course naturally, so, this might be difficult and take some extreme effort. You might want to consider asking like-minded friends who use psd's where they got them so you can check those users out for yourself.

If they're all the same, problem, people...

Look for users well outside of your corner of the RPC(s) who are not asking to be paid. I know it sounds wild, but there really are RPers out there who just enjoy making things for others! I can think of at least one right off on my dash. They might not be advertising for doing psd's or psd packs, but either they might be willing to do so (especially if they do not appear policing-positive) if you explain what is going on, or they could at least fill some requests for you for fully made icons and such. Hell, people who love doing this work usually know others who do as well, and anti-policing people quite reasonably stick together. They could have suggestions for someone not vile selling psd's.

Depending on what it is you want your psd's to do, I promise you that it wouldn't take you very long to learn it. I know...I know lol that's both really easy for me say when I've been doing it for over twenty years and am about to piss some people off. The latter because the most common settings on popular psd's are extremely simple shit, a lot of that is the kind of thing you're expressly told not to do in design work. Like ramping up extreme contrast, pixelating the fuck out of an image, and turning up the primary colors only. Once you get to playing with photoshop or an equivalent, you will totally see what I mean. You can accidentally make an icon look identical to something that is on trend in the RPC. If that was what you were going for? You've hit the mark, and it's just repetition and tweaking it here and there!

Once you start playing with it, too, it's actually pretty intuitive when it comes to the basic things like resizing, adjusting colors and contrast, and doing easy effects like blurs and sharpening. Frankly, playing with it is better than half the tutorials you'll find because they get unnecessarily complicated when all you want to do is crop your muse's face, overlay some color, and add a damn dotted border. Listen, like I said, I have a lot of experience...and I find many tutorials frustrating and overwhelming!

It is not just you, you're not dumb or anything. People get very comfortable with something and when they try to explain it to others, they use terms and methods that are more advanced or specific to them than they realize. That's all!

If you have friends who make their own things, ask them some very basic questions about what you want to do. They know you, so, they'll know better how to explain to you, specifically. Just keep it simple until you've had some time to experiment! Ask things like, "I want to take this image, resize it to be an icon, and add an orange tint to the image while sharpening only my muse's features...how would I do that? Easy mode?"

And! You don't even have to pay for photoshop or pirate it anymore! Photopea is as an exact copy as possible entirely located in your browser for free. It's all overwhelming at first, a real case of too many options and ways to do the same thing, but the only way it gets less overwhelming is just diving into it. Dive in, get a little frustrated, have some successes, make some awesome discoveries, it gets a bit addicting in short order. Then, the tutorials and tips are so much easier to figure out and expand on, too.

If you'd like, you can always send me a pm here and ask me. I'm happy to try to explain how to do things, zero judgment or impatience. Just an additional option if you both decide to try learning and would feel comfortable doing that. Zero judgment as well on not wanting to do either of those things!

Okay, this one is much harder than learning PS basics because it's honestly a bit terrifying...the way these people are, they're going to take issue with you no matter what you do, and in the end, if they notice you and feel like bothering you, they will. There's literally nothing you can do about it. All you can do is try to buffer yourself, stay away from them, and be aware that you are not the problem.

Like with the AO3 thing or writing what could be viewed as toxic relationships. You can never write or be interested in a single, solitary thing that they're on about (and accusing you of doing in real life when the burning Eye of Moron turns your direction), but to them, you supporting the right of other people to do so is just as bad as doing it yourself. To them, the toxic relationships not only would be problematic, they'd be problematic enough. Being uncomfortable with their policing and feeling unsafe because of it is, to them, a red flag of how problematic you are. Writing anything they've deemed objectionable (or reading or viewing it, for that matter) anywhere, doesn't have to be on this platform or RP-adjacent, doesn't have to actually utilize any of their materials, is enough.

They're absolutely including you in who shouldn't use their shit. That's part of the "logic" and methodology of policing. Everyone is problematic, so, everyone can be labeled a pedo and harassed without too many people getting up in arms about it. No one is safe, so, everyone better behave. You don't actually have to be engaging with or enjoying things like underage, non/dubcon, rape, abusive relationships, etc.

All that is truly up to you is making an effort to avoid them, though, this is very often unfair and likely to get more unfair as resource blogs of all sorts deal in it more. At least, in this case, you do have some small bit of actionable power - by not ever buying from them. They wouldn't be charging if they did not either need or want the money, not giving it to them is a bigger hit than things like simply unfollowing/blocking, reblogging PSA's, and so on is!

Nope, it isn't like you're denying them some extreme amount of money by yourself, but every three, five, ten dollars is felt pretty hard when you desperately need money and/or are saving for something.

I know, I mean, I personally do know, that it's impossible to "get over" bullying, Anon. I'm in no way telling you to just get over it and move on, find some great well of not caring somewhere! What I'm saying is that there is power in not giving them power. The power to make you anxious, uncomfortable, unsafe, when you have every right to be here doing your thing and are not hurting anyone. And it might seem to be a deeply contrary sort of logic, but realizing and accepting that there are people out there who irrationally dislike you for literally no reason, that you cannot infallibly escape or avoid, despite doing nothing wrong is a bit empowering. Because it puts into perspective the things you can control, and when we know what is in our control, it's easier to just enjoy our time here without constantly waiting for the other shoe to drop. If it drops, we can go put it back in the closet where it belongs.

It starts to put a positive spin on the whole, damned if I do, damned if I don't feeling, if that makes sense? I'm probably way too tired to try to be explaining this lol I'm sorry!

Anyway, again, I'm not implying you can or should do any, let alone all, of those suggestions! I just really hope that something will help you feel even a little bit more at ease. It's an unfair situation, it isn't right, and you have every reason to be uncomfortable and stressed. tbh the ori ask didnt have to be a dick with the way they asked you to add a read more, they could have been nicer about it. and this isnt me justifying their actions, but some stories without a read more could clog up a screen through the tag search or the suggestions page, esp if theres more than one user doing the same. I cant speak for the second anon definitively, but youre not inconsiderate at all, even intentionally. i think they just meant that the action of using read more is done out of courtesy in general, and its not an attack on your character. just them highlighting the action as ig they didnt know you alrd always use the read more function with other stories.

I totally get that!! I wasn’t pressed about them mentioning the see more cut - I was more pressed about the way the ask was phrased. As though my work was a bother to them and clogging up their dash. Just think there was a polite way to say it.

Okay, let’s be honest. Tumblr’s biggest cyberbullying problem comes from its askbox.

While I haven’t experienced this at all — only because I keep my askbox off — there have been several posts by bloggers basically asking people to stop sending them messages that come across as volatile or offensive. Some would even go as far as to repeatedly ask people to stop sending threatening messages if nothing ever calms down.

This kind of behavior is straight-out fucked, and EVERYBODY KNOWS THIS. And yet, tumblr doesn’t really seem to do anything about this. Oh sure, their policy guidelines explicitly state that “Tumblr is not for: Hate speech… Threats… Non-genuine behavior… [and] Harassment” but all they do is turn a blind eye towards the asks that do in fact promote this. And I’m not the only one who realizes this. Multiple bloggers have asked — wait, no actually, not asked, demanded for this cyberbullying to stop but nothing ever happens. Basically, Tumblr is quite shitty when it comes to the prevention of cyberbullying through the ask box.

Now, I just want to clear up something that is probably on your mind as you’re reading this: I’m not saying Tumblr should get rid of the askbox. Not at all. In fact, I’d prefer it if it was kept. What I am saying is people take advantage of sending offensive messages through the “ask anonymously” checkbox — THIS is the problem.

There are two reasons why someone would click the “ask anonymously” option:

The person who wants to ask the tumblr user doesn’t have an account and genuinely wants to ask a question about the content they post.

The person wants to ask questions, but doesn’t want to be discovered. Either because that person is shy and might be uncomfortable about their identity becoming public or — and this is what I’m talking about — they want to criticize someone and the content that they post, more often than not using a tone that can be categorized as hateful or just basic anger.

See, here’s the thing: criticism is a neutral term, as it can be both beneficial and toxic. It can be beneficial because criticism can be used to learn from one’s mistakes whether it's the way an art piece looks or whether they need a text to be fixed etc. However, it only gets toxic when the criticism outrights nitpicks and offends the artist to the point where they have to address this because this is hurtful to them. Beneficial criticism will, mostly, show up in option A, as the anons who are sending these asks are usually individuals who enjoy the content. Toxic criticism, on the other hand, will show up in option B, and ends up running the risk of classic cyberbullying. Nobody knows who is making the offensive remarks because their decision to remain anonymous allows them not to get caught. Also, it's difficult to ban someone from tumblr if their identity is 100% secretive.

Not to mention, the icon may be responsible. I reblogged this, but @thechekhov — a tumblr artist who has been on tumblr since 2012 and overall a pretty swell human being — ended up creating a petition to change the icon from a head with sunglasses to a head that is more nervous-looking. While it might come across as comical at first, they have a point. When someone commits rude behavior under the “ask anonymous” option, the blogger concludes that the anon is basically smug and genuinely doesn’t care if the user gets [emotionally] hurt. And it’s not even clear why they do this. It may be just because it makes them cool, but if that’s the case then just… ugh. There are multiple examples of these. Seriously, just check out any posts under the tag “anon hate” and you're bound to find a few where anons specifically use swear words and even the phrase “I hate you/I hate this blog” in their message towards a blogger. No joke. This isn’t just unacceptable — this is fuck. Absolute fuck.

So, what to take away from this? Well, cyberbullying is unanimously not dealt with properly by Tumblr and it leaves a chaos-storm of bloggers who are deeply hurt by these comments and this kind of behavior is the absolute fucking nightmare of anyone who posts on tumblr. The only solution is maybe, just maybe, tumblr should get rid of the “ask anonymous” option. It won’t completely prevent cyberbullying, but if a tumblr user with an account sends an offensive ask, at least they can be caught. Again, I haven’t experienced this, but I’m getting sick and tired of watching this hate ooze its way through blogs with no regard for the consequences it may impose on the emotions of users. And while tumblr isn’t the only social platform that has cases of cyberbullying, it allegedly has the most obvious problem of how this cyberbullying spread.

Of course, considering that tumblr is well, tumblr, there is no doubt they may not do anything on the matter. And who knows the conflict that might occur if this is emailed to them. But setting that aside (and I’m gonna sound like a preacher, sorry for that), if your experiencing this problem you can do two things:

Turn off the anonymous option from your askbox. That way if cyberbullying does occur, again, it will be recognized more easily and the cyberbully can be tracked down

Close the inbox for a while. Seriously, this is perhaps the best way to prevent any form of this shitty behavior

Okay, but please consider once again; Beetlebabes and Anti Shippers should both be allowed to enjoy Beetlejuice without hate from anyone, we’re all just looking for a good time. You can avoid content you dislike, by either blocking a tag or user entirely. You don’t have to read something or look at it if you dislike it. Nether-Receipts also mostly counts death and rape threats sent directly to users and isn’t intended to send any hate to users. Hell, anti’s are allowed to submit things too!

ok here we go again so i get what youre i saying i understand that that would be super cool if everyone could just get along but the fact of the matter is that there are people in the world who are extremely triggered and hurt by certain content

i have received accounts of certain parties deliberately breaking rules in discord servers that were clearly stated simply because they do not care about other people’s comfort or they do not care if theyre bothering people which frankly really bothers me

i have said before that i think a lot of people on the internet in general have issues with over identifying with bad traits and making it too integral to their personality and i think thats not great but i see it a lot

all im saying on that is that some of the worst asks that are sent seem to be almost too awful like the opposite of too good to be true i cant confirm that this is the case but it is what i think based on what ive seen from screenshots

Being Supreme Leader of The First Order had its advantages. One such advantage being that he made his own schedule. A second such advantage was that Kylo Ren had no one who would ridicule him nor tell him to spend less time with his partner.

For you, living in amongst The First Order was definitely something you never saw coming. Honestly as someone from Earth you only expected so much in terms of being involved with events other than those of your homeworld. Space travel was one thing you were still trying to mentally grasp even after a year of knowing and dating the Kylo Ren.

Despite a schedule that could be changed on a whim, you found yourself having quiet time with your boyfriend. No creepy helmet, no barking general, and no training. It was the perfect alone time.

“Feeling better today?” You asked as you joined Kylo on the dark-colored couch.

“Always better with you.”

You shook your head at his smirk.

Over the past couple of days Kylo had been feeling a tad under the weather not that the medical droids diagnosed him with anything besides fatigue. Thankfully, you were someone he’d listen to, especially when it came to taking care of himself.

You had a way of putting your foot down and speaking logically.

“How about we get our minds off of business for a while and entertain ourselves,” you suggested.

“That sounds very agreeable.”

“YouTube it is!”

“You—what?”

“Videos online,” you reached over for his Datapad.

“Earth thing, right.”

“How….about…oh. Top tens. Umm….how about dumbest tweets?”

Kylo ran a hand over his face.

“Out of everything we could be doing with now you want to watch a holovid about idiots?” Kylo looked at you strangely if then with an amount of judgement.

“Well first I have to remember how to find all of the,” you tapped away at the Datapad, “Earth based sites. They run differently…”

Kylo draped an arm behind you on the couch.

“There we go.”

Once finding the right links the rest of your search was easy.

“Over fifty videos?”

“We’re not going to watch them all. Chill.” You patted his leg in reassurance. “I mean, it’s funny to a point until you realize it’s real. They’re people who just…don’t get it or something. It’s really sad if you just think about it. Disappointing and slightly-worried sad because how have they gotten this far?”

You pressed for the very first video to play.

Kylo sat quietly, seemingly giving the video a chance.

How long would that last exactly? If it did.

The video started as a countdown from ten. Added that it really did start off pretty foolish. In a pay-attention-to-what-the-sentence-actually-was sort of way.

Obviously the first person did know what the phrase ‘I’d rather kill myself’ actually meant.

You could feel Kylo’s eyes as they peered over at you.

“They don’t realize what they’re saying…usually that’s an excuse.”

“Or they have no idea at all,” Kylo said.

The following tweet included the idea of the Earth having a birthday. Or rather someone thinking that the planet was only 2,014 years old.

“I forgot that Earth still has their own—.”

“Shh!”

His only comment and response afterwards being an exaggerated exhale through his nose.

“Earthlings are stubborn to keep things how they like them.”

“Is that why there’s a group that prohibits the idea of space travel even while a cargo ship supplies them with food?”

You shrugged.

Number eight of dumbest tweets came in the form of not knowing the answer meanwhile the answer was in their question. Also known as: when someone doesn’t realize that the name most people refer to a president by is their last name.

“Wow,” your shoulders shook with laughter. “How’s American History class going for you?”

“This is old.”

“I know. Shh.”

He flicked your shoulder.

You bopped his knee.

You were messing with your boyfriend, but also messing with how it wasn’t entirely the person’s fault for not knowing the last name of a president. Names were almost used as nicknames in some cases.

“Couldn’t they have searched it on the Holonet? Were they that lazy?”

“Shh.”

Tweet number seven on the list had a lead up that was already having Kylo cringing.

A tweet that included someone believing something online without thinking about the real life, common sense, science. Against what the person tweeting had read, a microwave that heats up food or drinks was not ever going to charge the battery of a phone.

“No. No, no….they—they did,” he groaned.

“Good lesson though.” You suggested. You couldn’t even imagine what information they lost on their SD card let alone the condition of the microwave.

“And if it wasn’t? What if after all of that, they still believe it?”

You shrugged as it started the next tweet soon after explaining the why it obviously didn’t work.

A tweeted question appeared about whether the amount of months a woman was pregnant doubled or not if she had twins. That was definitely different. Not to mention odd.

“Only child?”

“Probably,” you said.

“Did poorly in health lessons?”

“More likely.”

“That would be an extremely long time. They should have thought about their question longer. Would have taken them eighteen months.” He chuckled.

“Have you thought about it?”

He didn’t say a word.

Number five on the countdown had a person who had no idea that apples also had a variety of green.

“Does she live on a desert planet?”

You elbowed him lightly.

“It’s food. A common one, right?”

You nodded.

When the host mentioned about the colors of bananas and oranges to tell the person who tweeted, you both started snickering.

“Wanna send Hux some oranges?”

“Too expensive. Earth is too close to wild space.”

“Could you do it for my birthday?”

Your snickering continued a little longer as the next tweet involved someone who, though excited, did not know whether they’d be an aunt or an uncle.

“I’m guessing their parents are both the only child.”

“Yeah,” Kylo leaned closer to you. “This one isn’t so bad. The heating up a phone was pretty ridiculous. It went against knowledge of two machines.”

“True, but here they somehow managed to think that the baby’s gender, no matter how that works out, determines whether they are an aunt or uncle. I have a lot of questions about this. Did someone tell them something? Did they mishear or—?”

“It’s the next one. Last three.”

You could actually hear the amusement in his voice. That was a happy change. Also an almost rare one.

Well the third in the list was definitely something. It was a mixture of ignorance, poor grammar, and a bit of rudeness. Long story short, they believed that the Earth was flat. They firmly believed it.

Pausing the video, Kylo waited for you to face him before he made a ‘you serious?’ expression.

“It’s not my fault that even with space travel people on Earth thought or still think that the planet’s flat.”

“How do they not believe what’s…what they are living on?”

“I don’t know. I guess they don’t look out onto the curved horizon or a lunar eclipse.”

He threw his head back and slumped in his seat.

Again you patted his thigh, but this time in an effort to comfort him from others’….lack of knowledge.

“Oh, no,” you watched tweet number two as the video panned down on a tweet that included pictures. “It’s literally the same name and face. Read the credits, sweetie.”

“What’s a bel air?”

Whipping your head in his direction, you had a realization.

“You’ve never watched it.”

“Is…is it a show?”

“Yes. That’s next on your learning-from-Earth to-do list. I was wondering why you weren’t giving much of a reaction.”

“It’s still stupid.”

“Language.”

The number one dumbest tweet appeared on screen. The finale of the video. Yet it only took the image of someone’s debit card to raise a response from Kylo.

Loud groaning from your boyfriend drowned out the audio from the video.

“She literally was giving away all of the information they should have told her to keep to herself. What did she think was going to happen? Is no one telling her? No sense. She deserved that one.”

“Maybe somewhere and somehow she figured it out.” You said.

“Doubt it.”

“Give the earthlings a chance.”

“There’s only one earthling worth chances.”

You smiled to yourself despite everything.

Once you thought that the tweet’s story was at a close, it wasn’t. You both heard the continuation of the tweet.

“She did the same thing again? Seriously? Did she not learn anything from people using her card? Is it going to take her ten times to figure it out?”

“Chill, babe. Chill. You don’t have to deal with it.”

By then the video was wrapping up nicely and advertising more videos.

“There. It’s over.”

“I can only take so much stupidity.”

“You’ll be okay,” you leaned down to kiss his forehead. “And be nice.”

“And just so we’re clear, I think it’s safer for you never to return to your home planet for the sake of your intelligence.”

“It’s not all that bad. There are a lot of intelligent people from Earth.”

He rose a dark eyebrow at you.

“Don’t give me that attitude, mister.” You poked his nose.

An unseen action pulled the Datapad from your grasp.

It did not surprise you nor did it baffle you. Your boyfriend was a Force user. Common knowledge.

Kylo set the Datapad aside as he refocused on you.

“You took those tweets very well.”

He eyed you suspiciously.

“Want the truth?”

He nodded.

“I’ve heard worse while still on Earth.”

“My earlier statement is now an order. You’re not traveling back. I will give you more duties here. Have you deal with Hux.”

“Please, no.”

There was his familiar chuckle, only seen and heard by you, as he proved that he was slightly teasing. He respected and valued you; he wasn’t about to ruin your day by forcing you to spend time with Hux or not pick where you could go.

“So…,” you leaned closer to play with his dark hair. “Wanna watch Fresh Prince of Bel Air?”

“I think I’ve watched enough holovids today.”

Your boyfriend, the Supreme Leader, had other ideas in mind to spend his time with you in company.

Heh, see, that's where you're wrong. No group "belongs" together. That'd be like saying, white people belong together - at which point we're one step away from what white nationalists stay. "Queer" is a political, and the funny thing is... plenty of non-political "queers" are sick of the fuck that queer theory was invented and pushed onto people - which those in LGTB readily accepted. Let's face it. The only experience people like you care about is from the ones conforming to your ideology.

This is a super non-specific ask and I’m just going to assume it’s about the thing I just wrote just now, because otherwise this could be about literally anything I’ve done involving the word queer and that would just be way too many things. Also, I understand the limitations of using the ask box, but this doesn’t actually make a very good argument (if it even contains an argument???), and even if it did, I have more opportunity to outvoice you by sheer nature of having an unlimited character count and also controlling what I give a platform to. Reblogging to respond to something as long as the stuff I write is the best way to go, imo, but other people who want to remain anonymous are free to submit responses if it means not getting incoherent anon asks.

I think I, myself, already implied that no group “belongs” together. Because the false logic of saying “all trans people are trans” is the idea that all trans people have the same experiences, which is not only false along lines of race/class/ability/religion/etc, but also within the nature of the trans experience itself being an incoherent experience (since transness is just as socially constructed as cisness). Therefore what I propose is group membership based not on “belonging” but on desire and willingness.

First things first, though, is that you literally can’t debate without nuance. Like… it’s an incredibly well-known fact around here that yes, queer is a slur; this point has been beaten to death in shitty tumblr discourse. Everyone who reclaims queer for themselves knows this, and that’s why they do it. To say otherwise is an unrealistic sanitation of history and a denial of many peoples’ lived experience. And that is why the reclamation is inherently political–because you can’t just call yourself a bad thing without bringing up either why it’s bad or why it’s perceived as bad or why it’s not actually bad, or why it’s bad and that’s okay. Those are all political things. So if you (hypothetical you, not you specifically) are calling yourself queer but you hate queer theory and queer politics… you would honestly be better off not calling yourself queer. Lie legitimately better off, for your own emotional wellbeing. It’s not good to surround yourself with things you vehemently disagree with.

Moreover, queer has never been apolitical. This point has also been discussed extensively. There’s a reason for all the slogans like “we’re here, we’re queer,” “not gay as in happy but queer as in fuck you,” “queer power,” etc. It’s because back in the LG(B) days, queer was the word for everyone who was left over, who had no chance of playing into respectability politics and being accept into either LG(B) spaces or normative Straight spaces. So queer people were poor, they were non-white, they were disabled, they were trans, they were kinky, they were polyamorous. People who didn’t all themselves queer fit into either the normative LG(B) mold (white, middle class, cis) or the normative Straight mold (also white, middle class, cis).

See the problem? Queerness has been there for the people who have needed it since identity politics began.

Your use of the passive voice (”…queer theory was invented”) is actually really telling. You know what you’re willfully ignoring? The fact that queer people invented queer theory. No one cared about the lives of queer people except themselves. No one was going to document their lived experiences or contemplate the social construction of the norms they were breaking or take a stand against not only heteropatriarchy, but also class differences and white supremacy. Queer theory was just regular critical race/class/gender theory, but written by queer people with their queerness in mind. It’s really not like… it’s own special thing that people came up with out of the blue to fuck with tumblr users. So to put down queer theory is literally to say that intersectional critical race/class/gender theory (YES, that is an academically-recognized branch of sociological theory) should not include thoughts about queer identity. That’s all queer theory is, is the incorporation of queer sexology into existing sociology (read as: specific kinds of identity politics into existing frameworks of identity politics).

And to speak to the point of “[was] pushed onto people” (and I guess also “which those in LGTB readily accepted,” while I’m at it)…. it wasn’t. Queer theory was suppressed by dominant LG(B) voices. Just look at radfems who did and still do everything they can to try to delegitimize trans experiences. The people who read works of queer theory were the people who either actively searched for them or stumbled upon them, chose to read them (because reading is a choice, much like sending an anon is), and then chose to accept the ideologies presented (or even better them). You can’t be forcibly indoctrinated into an ideology unless you’re alienated from all other ideologies, and that literally cannot happen when it’s minorities coming up with the ideas, because normative culture is, in fact, against queer theory being understood. In fact, the rhetoric of nonconsensual agenda-pushing by queer people is just another way to demonize them in the public sphere.

I kind of feel like people who are against queer theory in general have this strange misinterpretation of the phrase to mean “a specific theory that relates to queerness, for example its cause,” as opposed to what it actually means which is “a collection of theories (ie “theory” in the abstract) about queerness and the things proximal to it.”

My “ideology” is that I think coalitional politics is more effective than solidarity politics, and that compassion is much more valuable than empathy. It’s literally an ideology of praxis.
