How to Be a Hero Like a Villain by Alydia Rackham

Introduction

I’m Basically a Geek

                 Hi. Yeah, so, it’s true. I’m a geek. Have been forever. I really had no shot at being otherwise. My mom raised my brother and I on musicals and Star Wars and Star Trek and Disney. Growing up, I read loads of YA sci-fi novels—again, lots of Star Wars—and then when Marvel started making movies, I got into X-Men and then Iron Man, Thor (my major crush on Loki still remains alive), Captain America, then Batman; all that jazz. I’m also a Disney fanatic and a theatre nerd.

I was an English major in college, am in love with Tolkien and Austen and Dickens and Doyle, and adore all things Victorian. My friend Jaicee introduced me to Vampire Diaries and Originals (which are both compelling studies in heroics and villainy, let me tell you). I’ve written tons of fanfiction, in addition to loads of original novels. I write in all genres, mostly because I get hooked on a good story, good characters, no matter the setting—though I do have a weakness for an epic story arc, flawed heroes and of course, powerful villains. Right now, I’m on the 5th book in my fairy tale retellings series. So far, I’ve retold “Beauty and the Beast,” “The Snow Queen,” “The Little Mermaid,”—and then I did a totally-original one about a Curse-Maker, from the POV of…yep, the villain! At the moment, I’m working on a retelling of the legend of King Arthur, called “Excalibor.” It’s a blast.

               As you might imagine, I am intrigued most of all by character. I enjoy reading about the great ones, and inhabiting the interesting ones in my own writing. Flat romantic interests and motivation-less villains drive me nuts. I’m fascinated by a character’s inner workings, his history, his motivation, his mannerisms, his relationships, his skills, his style, the way he presents himself to the world. My brother and I love analyzing plot holes and devices and flaws and symbolism and insights. (Our after-movie discussions can get very animated, and last for hours.)

               Often, we find ourselves yelling things at the Hero on the screen like “For crying out loud, don’t do that! Don’t go in there! Stop wasting your time! Watch out—don’t you know what’s in there?” We easily see the choices that the Hero makes that are flawed, impulsive, or just plain stupid.

               But very rarely do we notice such things about the Villain. A good one, anyway.

               The Villain takes us by surprise. He startles us. He’s two steps ahead. He already has the device, he’s laid the trap, he’s captured the girlfriend, he’s destroyed the evidence. (Cancer Man in X-Files makes me absolutely want to scream because of this stuff.)

               Why is that? How did he know? How is he doing this?? It drives us crazy—and yet, we reluctantly have to admire the greats for being such awesome masterminds.

               So…how are the Villains so successful? Sure, we could shrug it off and say, “Well, he’s a super-genius, what do you expect?” But that’s too easy, and frankly, it’s doing a great disservice to our Evil Neighborhood Menace. In fact, with everything we see, and with the Hero making such rash and stupid decisions, oftentimes it’s a wonder that the Hero even lives, let alone triumphs in the end.

               And actually, in real life, that’s often true. The Hero does die or fail, and the Villain lives and prospers. Why?

               What is it that the Villain is doing that the Hero is not doing, which makes him successful? Again, the easy and lazy answer is “He kills people to get what he wants, he lies, he steals.” Okay, sure. What you’re describing is a garden-variety thug. Somebody who gets caught in Spiderman’s webs every weekend.

You are not describing a Super-Villain.

There’s something about a Super-Villain—a really great one—that keeps him in the game, that makes him a serious threat to the Hero, even after being beaten over and over again. What is it about Lex Luthor—who has no powers—that keeps him alive, and makes him a continuous, serious threat against Superman, the most powerful being on the planet?

How is it that a Villain keeps coming back, when similar failures and losses would crush a Hero and send him home forever, never again to don the super suit?

Could it be that a Villain’s methods, his mindset, his approach, are vastly different from a Hero’s?

And, if a Hero could learn to take these qualities and mesh them with his own already-existing awesomeness, could he perhaps avoid a devastating loss, a crushing defeat?

Is that…in fact…what does make the Hero succeed in the end??

That’s what this book is about. Examining what truly is awesome about a great Villain, and showing YOU how you can put those qualities to use in your own life to do a great deal of good, instead of great evil.

Be a great Hero. Take a few tips from the Villains.

         P.S. I’m going to refer to both the Hero and Villain in this book as “he.” I’m doing that because it’s waaay easier than saying “he or she” all the time. Not because I don’t believe that women can be awesome Heroes, or terribly wicked Villains.

 Chapter One

What Makes A Hero or a Villain?

                 So, what is it that makes a person a Hero, instead of a Villain? We’re talking the foundation, here. What are the qualities he or she possesses deep down inside that distinguish, that draw the line, that clearly state to the world: “Nope, this is a good guy, this is a bad guy”? This can be confusing. Especially when we look at two characters, say Loki and Bucky Barnes. Both of them have been all over the map with both good and evil deeds. Both have been called Villains, and both could be Heroes.

               What is it that makes us decide where someone stands?

               I would say that it all comes down to one thing: CHOICES.

               It can’t be anything else. You can’t say it’s kindness, or love, gentleness, trust, honesty, bravery, self-sacrifice, or self-respect. Many Heroes and Villains alike struggle with self-respect. Many Villains sacrifice themselves for a person, or a cause. Villains are almost always exceptionally brave. Villains probably are honest with at least one person, or have been in the past. They also have trusted someone, been gentle with someone or something. Most certainly, the best Villains have loved very, very deeply, and tried their best to be kind to that person or animal.

               However, something went wrong. Very wrong. And with every Villain, it can be traced back to Choice.

               Sometimes, it’s a single choice. Many times, it’s several choices in a row. And eventually, they all decide that “the ends justify the means.” They opt for self-preservation, for the removal of liberty for other people, for the arrogant assertion of their own will. Over and over again, until it poisons them.

               A Hero is someone who does not do this. Who chooses, even if it is wrenchingly difficult, to stand by what is right, no matter the consequences. No matter if he loses everything. He will not betray his honor. Even if no one else would see or know—he would know. And he will not do it.

               In the end, this is what makes the Hero stronger than a Villain. The climax, and the defeat of the Villain, comes when the Villain’s weaknesses are exposed, and the Hero takes all his own strengths, combines them with the strengths of the Villain, and declares victory.

               A Hero guards his or her good conscience fiercely. It’s pretty well summed up in this quote from Captain America:

               “Whatever happens tomorrow, you must promise me one thing. That you will stay who you are: not a perfect soldier, but a good man.”  

 Chapter Two

Good Guys Can Be Stupid

                 We all know it’s true. When we’re in the movie theatre, we mutter under our breath, shake our heads.

When we’re at home, we scream at the TV.

               “Nooooo! What are you thinking? Don’t go that way, go the other way!”

               “You moron, don’t go off by yourself! Never leave the group! Especially in the dark!”

               “What, you jumped in there but you had no way of getting out?”

               “Don’t ignore her calls, she’s trying to save your life!”

               Yep, we’ve all been there. So what are some bad traits that Heroes tend to display that we ought to try to avoid ourselves?

  Stupid Impulsiveness

               Sure, impulsiveness can be good on a date, or at a restaurant trying some new dish.

It’s not good when you’re, I dunno, jumping off a ten story building. Following a noise into a dark forest. Or deciding to stop a bank robbery two days after you discovered your powers. Bad planning, or none at all. Not even thinking about what could happen in the next five minutes, let alone preparing for it.

For us regular folks, this can be translated into deciding to go for a drive in the snow with no 4-wheel drive, jumping off something that’s too high, going on a trip without enough money, walking down a dark alley in New York City…

               Yeah, you get the idea.

Not Keeping Family and Friends in the Loop

               We’ve seen it a lot: Heroes thinking they need to conquer alone—deal with all their problems, and protect their family members. However, all that ends up causing is major trouble. Sometimes life-threatening, sometimes not, but it’s never good. One that comes to mind is Elizabeth Bennet in Pride and Prejudice. If she had told her sisters about what was going on with Darcy, and especially the drama with Mr. Wickham, she might have saved her sister Lydia from being entrapped by the Villain. Pretty much every single story about a superhero contains this type of lament: “If I had only just told them the truth!”  

               Heroes fall into the trap of thinking that they’re protecting their loved ones by keeping secrets. By not trusting their friends or their family with what’s going on in their lives. When in fact, this only puts their loved ones in danger, and puts serious stress and pressure on the Hero, which can lead to exhaustion, panic, stretched resources, missed opportunities, and giving the loved ones the feeling that they’re being neglected and forgotten.

  Discouragement

           So many times, the Hero just doesn’t have the tools to do what he needs to do. He’s isolated himself, he’s gone without sleep, he’s fighting an uphill battle every day. And then, one major thing goes the wrong way, and he’s broken. He collapses, he throws things, he cries, he’s in despair. He thinks there’s no possible way for him to do this, to keep going.

               He dwells on the failure. It almost swallows him. He loses all confidence, all belief in himself. He might even lose faith in the cause itself, in the people and things he’s been fighting so hard for. And if someone doesn’t come along and convince him otherwise, he’ll never put on that Hero cape again, or pick up that shield, or that sword.

The Sun starts rising and I can see Scott headed for the road. I start the car, back out and follow him, stopping for him. He gets in and I reach in the backseat and grab a hoodie and lay it over him. We ride quietly for awhile until he finally speaks up.

“What are you doing out here?” He asks, holding his injured arm.

“Figured you'd be out here looking for Derek.” I answer, keeping my eyes on the road.

“Where's Stiles?”

“At home, waiting for you to call him and let him know you're okay.”

It's quiet between us again. The only noise is coming from the engine of the beetle and the radio playing “Monster” by Skillet at a low volume. Scott looks at the radio, then out the window.

“Can you turn that off, please?” He asks. I turn it off and keep driving. God, I hate awkward silences.

“You know what actually worries me the most?” Scott asks with a tinge of sadness in his voice.

“If you say Allison… I'm gonna puke.” I reply as I continue to look straight ahead.

“She probably hates me now…” he sighs

“I seriously doubt that, but it might help if you come up with a pretty damn good apology. No excuses for it, just an apology…” I inform him. “Just don't do what Stiles would suggest.” I continue.

“Which is?”

“Tell her the truth and revel in the awesomeness of being a werewolf!” I say, poorly impersonating Stiles, making Scott slightly chuckle.

“You're gonna get through this, even if Stiles and I have to chain you up on a Full Moon night and feed you live mice.” I say, trying to comfort him.

“Can I ask you something?” He asks after a minute.

“Sure.”

“Why are you helping me?” I look at him for a second, then back to the road.

“Scott… when I moved here, you and Stiles were the first people to talk to me. You accepted me early on and were nice to me and included me in stuff… I consider you my friend…” I answer back kindly. “Which is why if I tell you a secret, you have to promise that you won't tell Stiles.” I continue.

“Why?” He asks, turning his body towards me.

“Because if I even have a molecule of a chance with him, I want to tell him myself.” I answer.

“Fair enough…” he shrugs. “So… what's the secret?” He asks.

I sigh, preparing myself for what I'm about to say. “You and Derek aren't the only supernatural creatures…” I trail off.

“Charli are-- are you a werewolf too?” He asks with pure shock in his voice.

I sigh. “No, but I have had a lot of movies made about what I am.”

“A witch?” He asks.

“No… I'm something more… bloodthirsty.” I try to hint.

He sits for a minute looking away, thinking. He finally has his ‘a-ha’ moment and whips his head towards me.

“You're a vampire?” He questions loudly.

“Yep.” I reply as I make a turn. He just stares at me in complete surprise. Great… more awkward silence.

“I assume you have a lot questions.” I mention. He slowly nods his head.

“Well I can answer one for you right now: I don't fucking sparkle in the sunlight.” I answer bitterly. “Fuck you, Stephanie Meyers…” I curse under my breath.

I pull up outside of Scott's house and put the car in park. I sigh and lean back so my head is on the headrest. Scott does the same. We then look at each other.

“Well, I gotta get home and do some damage control with my dad…” I tell him. “If you need anything, shoot me a text and I'll do what I can, okay?” I finish.

“Same to you, especially if you wanna talk about… well, y'know.” He sympathized.

“You promise you won't tell Stiles, right?” I insist.

“I promise.” He assures. I nod and half smile. He gets out and I watch him walk into the house. Once he's inside, I shift the gear into drive and go home.

On the drive home, I start to cry. Why, I'm not exactly sure. Maybe from being tired. Maybe from the fact that I made Scott promise to lie to his best friend. Or maybe the fact that Scott has turned into the one creature that I swore I'd never trust… but it's not his fault. I think it was a combination of all three.

He didn't ask to be bitten. He wasn't born that way either. Poor kid was just at the wrong place at the wrong time. I decided to just help him. At least until I see him as a threat to me, to my father, or to Stiles…

I pull into my driveway and take off my boots to quietly enter my house incase my dad is still sleeping. When I turn around, he's standing in the middle of the foyer, still in his pajamas with his arms crossed over his chest and giving me a stern look.

“You were out all night… wanna explain what you were doing before I strangle the life out of you?” He grumbles.

I set my boots next to the door then straighten back up to face him.

“Scott got sick and his mom couldn't leave work, so Stiles and I stayed with him to make sure he was okay.” I lie. Now how can I lie so easily to my dad and even come up with a good one, but yet I can't lie to Stiles?

“Really? Cuz I noticed you came home in the middle of the night and got your car… what was the reason for that?” He interrogates.

“Stiles’ jeep breaks down a lot, so incase we needed to take Scott to the hospital we needed a reliable car.” I lie again.

He steps closer. “You're picking at your nails.” He points out.

I look down at my hand and put it behind my back and don't make eye contact with him. “So? It's a bad habit I have…”

“Yeah, a habit you have when you lie.” he argues. “Look, I don't care if you go out with your friends, but I don't appreciate the lying.” He continues.

I look down at my feet and chew on the corner of my bottom lip. “I'm sorry…” I whisper.

“Yeah, well, you can apologize as you wash and wax my car.” He orders as he tosses me his keys.

I catch them and let out a long, exaggerated sigh. I head upstairs and change into a pair black running shorts and a tank top. I take everything I need outside and pull my dad's car out of the garage. I put my headphones in and start listening to music as I fill up a bucket with soap and water.

I put my hair up in a messy bun and start washing the car. After a little while of washing his car, ‘Teenage Dirtbag’ by Wheatus starts playing. I hum to the music, then start singing and even get to the point of playing guitar with the sponge. I get so into it that I don't even notice the old lady from across the street staring at me like I'm a nutcase. I just keep going, not even washing the car anymore and just having a public jam session. When the beat slows down, I turn back around to get back to work, only to see Stiles standing there with his hands in his hoodie pockets, smirking and chuckling at me, making me drop the sponge. My cheeks become hot and rosey as I take out my earbuds. Well this is fucking embarrassing. I'm gonna go crawl in a hole and die now.

“How long have you been standing there?” I squeak.

“Long enough to know that you play air guitar with a sponge.” He teases. I try to hide my face, then he continues. “It's cute.”

I look up and give him a shy smile. He smiles back. “Did you even get to sleep yet?” He asks.

“No, my dad caught me sneaking back in and as punishment, he's making me wash and wax his car.” I inform him.

“Well that sucks.” He comments. I nod in agreement, then pick the sponge back up and get back to washing the car.

He walks into my garage. I'm about to say something when he comes back out with another sponge and puts it in the bucket. He takes off his hoodie and tosses it in the garage.

“What are you doing?” I ask him.

“Part of this was my fault, so I'm helping you.” He states.

“Are you kidding? If my dad comes out here and sees you, he's gonna kill us both!” I warn.

“He's gonna have to catch me first…” he smirks and wiggles his eyebrows, making me laugh.

He picks up the second sponge and starts helping me. He's so fucking pretty!

I go pick up the hose to rinse off all the suds on the car when I notice that Stiles isn't paying attention and is ringing out the sponges. I get an evil genius idea.

“Hey Stiles?” I question innocently to get his attention.

He looks at me and I press the trigger on the hose and spray him. He put his hands up and turns his head away. When I stop, he puts his hands on his hips and and shakes his head down as he's looking down. He looks up at me through his lashes and presses his lips on a straight line and starts nodding.

“Okay, you wanna play that game?” he remarks, picking up the bucket of soapy water next to him.  

A mischievous smile spreads across his mole covered face and starts walking towards me. I take off running and he runs after me, both of us laughing. He catches up to me and dumps a bunch of water behind me all going down my back and my hair. I turn around and start spraying him again, he's trying to dodge the hose as I try to dodge him with the bucket. I eventually drop the hose and hide behind my dad's car. He comes over to me and is about to dump the rest of water in the bucket on me when I quickly look over at his house, then back to him.

“Hey I think your dad's calling for you.” I point towards his house.

He looks over and I flip the bucket and it lands on his head, soaking him. I burst into laughter and he lifts it up halfway, enough so his honey colored eyes are showing. Once I get myself together, I take it off his head and set it on the ground.

“I can't believe I fell for that.” He confesses shyly with rosey cheeks, smiling. We chuckle.

“Honestly? Neither can I sense you're dad's not even home.” I admit.

He looks over at his house again and starts laughing as he facepalms. He looks back at me and tucks some loose strands that were sticking to my cheek behind my ear, his long fingers grazing my cheek. Oh God, there's that weird butterfly feeling again!

We just look into each other's eyes for awhile. He steps closer to me, his look intensifies. Am I about to get my first kiss? Oh God, what if I suck? What if my breath stinks? Are my lips chapped? My mouth feels really dry…

We get so close that there's barely any distance between us. I close my eyes and suddenly I'm being hit with water. I put my hands up to protect my face and see that Stiles has done the same thing. I look in the direction of the stream and it's my father… spraying Stiles and I with the hose with a deadpan look on his face.

“Go home, Stiles.” He commands after he stops spraying us.

“Yes sir.” Stiles replies quietly. He grabs his hoodie out of the garage and instead of putting it on himself, he puts on me.

I look up at him confused. “I don't want you to get sick.” He answers my unasked question. He puts his hands in his drenched jeans pockets and heads to his house.

I can't help but watch him walk away. I like his butt. It's cute.

I look at my father with dagger eyes, then clean up and go change my clothes and go to lay in my bed, thinking about what was about to happen.

Was I really about to have my first kiss? Was he actually gonna kiss me? Was I just daydreaming? God! I can't believe my dad ruined the moment for me!

I let my thoughts race until I fell asleep. Who knew crushing hard on a guy could make on so exhausted?

I'm sitting cross legged on a bench outside of the school Monday, reading, and Scott sits next to me.

"I have some questions..." He declares

I look over at him and close my book. "Shoot." I tell him.

"Why aren't you affected by sunlight?" He asks, tilting his head like a puppy.

"My mom was half human, so I'm like... one third human." I answer.

"Do you drink human blood?"

"Nope. Strictly animal blood."

"Are you affected by garlic or holy water?"

"No, but my dad is..." I acknowledge.

"Is he a full blooded vampire?" He asks.

"Yep." I answer.

"So... can you turn into a bat?" He asks.

I roll my eyes and groan. "No, that's not an actual thing... I literally have no idea where that even came from." I inform him.

"How old are you really?" He nudges me with his elbow and wiggled his eyebrows.

"16... just like you and Stiles..." I grumble. "My dad, however, is 2,000 years old." I continue.

Scott's eyes nearly bug out of his head. I chuckle. I look behind him and see Allison coming. I tap him and point in her direction. When he turns around I get up and leave, seeing Stiles and walking over to him.

"Hey." I greet.

He looks at me and smiles. "Hey!" He greets back, slinging his backpack over his shoulder.

"I-uh, I want to apologize for my dad the other day--" he cuts me off.

"Hey, don't even worry about it. I get it... you're his daughter and I'm a teenage boy... dads with daughters hate teenage boys!" He explains, making me laugh.

"I know, but sometimes he can be a little overprotective." I acknowledge.

"Trust me, I'd be worried if he wasn't." He stops and faces me as he speaks.

I smile at him, then I notice something... Allison gets into a car with one of the hunters from last night. Stiles must've noticed because he looks in the direction I was looking, then back to me.

"What is it?" He asks concerned.

"I recognize him..." I trail off as the hunter closes Allison's door and walks to the driver side.

"How?" Stiles asks.

"He tried to kill Scott and Derek last night..."

Of course, it is a Vampire fiction, so the element of thrill would naturally be quite high :D

Tea or coffee? Tea. I get this really great tea from this place in the farmer’s market here. I currently have an iced lemon cake & a Hawaiian Sunset tea. They’re amazing. 

Stars or planets? Planets. I’m a planets person! 

Sun or moon? Moon. I love the moon with all my being. 

Black or white? Black. I look much better in black than white. Plus my cat is black, so that cat furr totally 

The zoo or the aquarium? Animals living free away from human interference. Neither, to be honest. I love animals too much to put them in captivity like that. 

Drama or comedy? A difficult decision, but drama wins by just a hair. Mostly because a lot of what I watch has drama in the title. I watch more crime drama than anything else. 

Thriller or adventure? Adventure. 

Short walks to the fridge or long walks on the beach? I love to walk, but like... not really on the beach. 

Indoors or outdoors? Although it depends on the day, to be honest. I love being outside. 

Animals or plants? I cannot keep plants alive to save my life, but it’s always been a dream to have an apartment with white walls, & plants hanging on every nook and cranny in the place. 

Time alone or time with others? I love being alone. I mean... as long as my cat is with me.

Introvert or extrovert? I think the above question answers why I’m an introvert.

Silence or music? Both, really. There are times when I just like to listen to the sounds of the house. But there are also times where I love listening to music. 

Darkness or light? Except when I’m trying to write or read. 

Cats or dogs? I know I have a dog, buttttttt.... my cat is the love of my life. If she were an actual person, I’d marry her. 

Dancing or being the wallflower? Although it depends on the people I’m with, because I will dance if I’m with certain people. 

Right or left? I write with my left hand, so I guess left. 

Werewolves or vampires? Both are good. I have started to have an appreciation for vampires because of the Lore podcast. The first episode was about vampires, but there have been several on people that transform which are ALWAYS fascinating. Literally this podcast is my life. Check this podcast out, you won’t be sorry. My favorite is this episode about lighthouses.

Dressing stylishly or dressing comfortably? I say as I’m sitting here... in my Grace Potter shirt, my Hamilton sweatshirt, sweatpants, & neon socks.

Sunrise or sunset? I think the sunset colors are prettier.

Lead or follow? Yikes, depends on the situation, but most of the time, leader. 

Optimist or pessimist? There’s no doubt about that.

Staying up late or waking up early? I say... as I go to bed before midnight every night except Thursday.

Speaking up or staying silent? I’ll often get into fights for just saying what I feel in a situation, especially if something is disgusting. 

White lies or brutal honesty? I mean... I’m a compulsive liar, but... I normally tell the truth to people... most of the time. Depends on the human.

Ask for permission before doing the stupid thing or ask for forgiveness after doing the stupid thing? Kind of neither. I don’t really do anything that others would consider stupid. 

LONG FORM:

Pet peeves: human existence. I mean, I don’t get annoyed by people often, unless they are just being assholes. Like for instance the people that ask “how can you be vegan & pro-choice” LISTEN ASSHOLE, you’re asking for a fight. Other than people asking questions that are obviously just looking to pick my thoughts and opinions on stuff apart, I am super not annoyed by people. 

Bad habits: I pick at my cuticles, so a lot of the time my fingers start to bleed.

Favourite scents (your amortentia!): Burning wood, Sunkist ( like oranges are good, but sunkist smells amazing ), my cat, lemons. A few of my favorite  scents. I also like lavender, mint, & rosemary. 

Favourite animal: Cats, but don’t tell my dog. I have a lot of favorite animals, but cats are so adorable. 

Favourite colour: Green is my favorite color. 

Favourite place to go (local or otherwise) (photos get bonus points): Honestly, I don’t have any local places that I go because the area I live in is sort of... boring. In New York, there’s this comic book shop I always go to. So probably that’s one of my favorite places. I’ll post some pictures at the bottom.

Favourite meme: ??? I’m not up to date on all the memes, so I don’t really have a favorite. 

Do you have any creative or artistic abilities? Yes, I do! Besides writing, I do watercolors. I can’t draw as well, but I love watercolors. Also, sometimes I knit & I’m learning to make my own soaps because a lot of homemade soaps aren’t vegan??? 

Talk about something that made you happy today, yesterday, this week: It snowed over the weekend! We were supposed to get 7 inches, though it turned out to only be about 4 or 5, but it snowed. I live in North Carolina, so snow doesn’t always happen every year, or not a big snow at least. I just love winter weather so much. 

Talk about an experience that made you feel proud or confident: To be honest, I don’t really know what to put here. I’m not a very prideful person or confident for that matter. 

Talk about something/someone that makes you feel relaxed: Dungeons & Dragons is the only thing that really relaxes me. I have two characters. One of them, Nico Thornbrush, is a halfling ( basically they’re hobbits, but they’re only 3 feet. ) fighter, that recently started to become a paladin -- or holy warrior. He’s only 20 years old, barely old enough to leave home, but he’s just so good... just such a cinnamon roll. But he’s dumb & doesn’t reallly believe in death. My other character though... is a whisper gnome named Ludovic Silvermist -- he goes by Ludo -- ( because I wasn’t allowed to name him Ronald without getting judged ). He’s a trickery cleric, that isn’t very devout to his goddess -- he kind of hates her. He’s all about them lies & deception to get him ahead. He used to be an orphan until a priest took him in. He has a rat named Scabbers that he occasionally talks to because it’s his best friend.

Talk about something you’re yet to try for the first time but want to: Skydiving. 

Who are your role models & why: Okay, so I have a lot of role models. But I’m just going to put a few here, since I don’t want to write novels. 

Matthew Mercer - Matthew is such a great person. I could probably go on & on about the things he’s done that have really inspired me & made me think he’s such a great person, but it would be a novel. If you have played more than one video game, chances are that Matt was a voice in it. He’s got over 300 IMDB credits. Seriously... & his fiance Marisha Ray is very involved with getting better working conditions for voice actors. Matt is that over achieving person that you just want to deck in the face, but he’s so sweet you just can’t bring yourself to do so, but he’s also an evil genius, so there’s that. He always reminds everyone to have faith that everything will work out. Even if it’s about his game, it still translates into real life. He’s created so much & done such a good job at inspiring others to create that I just look up to him for that reason alone.

Practically the entire cast of Critical Role is a role model to me in some way, so I won’t talk about all of them in detail. 

Obama - I think just saying that is enough. His farewell speech was just so amazing & really says everything about why I look up to him. 

Kieron Gillen & Jamie McKelvie - If you don’t read the series The Wicked + The Divine, I highly recommend it because it’s really good. I’ve met Gillen, McKelvie & their colourist Matt Wilson. They’re all really cool people. They’re doing what the love to do, but not only that, they have brought forward political and social issues into a comic series like I’ve never seen anyone do before. I love how these three are doing what they love, while being very aware of what they are creating & how important diversity representation is in media. I mean seriously, read WicDiv. There are themes of sexism and racism. And cultural appropriation v. appreciation is a huge deal as a whole in the comic. Seriously it’s such a diverse comic, I can’t even begin to describe. Not just with sexuality, but gender as well. I look up to them as a reminder that people are capable of change & even our generation can be pressured into thinking things that aren’t true because of media. 

Basically WicDiv is about these pop stars that are actually gods, but instead of living forever, they only have 2 years to live. Then in 90 years, it happens again. Basically, we’ve been told everyone is going to die by the end of the series. Which means my trash son is going  to die :/

Mara Wilson - seriously, just scroll through her twitter. She tells it like it is. I’m so glad Matilda grew up to be such a wonderful adult.

Talk about something you want to do this year: die. Hmm, I’m not sure. One of the biggest things on my list is to try and go to a live Critical Role show, if they have one. I think it would be really awesome to be able to see this show live. I mean... it’s live every week, but they stream from California. Maybe also one of the Night Vale shows. 

Would not recommend going on a Wednesday if you’re ever in NYC. It’s pretty scary with all the people getting all the new comics.
