Maybe it was stupid for someone so young to have access to such large sums of money.

That was not to say it wasn’t deserved, because it was. Your boy was one of the best upcoming players in the sport, alongside his brothers. He was signed onto one of the best teams, he was proving every day why they chose him and he was thriving in his place in the big leagues. There wasn’t anything about Luke that said he didn’t deserve the money he was being paid.

Except for his money spending habits: the biggest one being the fact he couldn’t seem to keep it in his bank.

You stared at the box he had placed at the foot of your bed just a few minutes ago when you had buzzed him in, so lost in finishing up the last few bits of your paper that it didn’t even occur to you why he was taking so long to climb a few flights of stairs until he walked in with the massive box in his hands. And if the look on his face was anything to go by, you knew it was something he knew you were going to dispute. 

“Do I even wanna know?” You asked with a heavy sigh, looking at the box like it was about to burst into flames. 

“Listen,” he started as he began to crawl towards you on the bed, reaching for you when you were finally close enough for him to trap in his arms. “It’s for a good reason.”

“You say that about all the presents you buy me,” you grumbled at the boy, though you smiled at his attempt regardless. “Luke, honey, I don’t need all these gifts.”

“Yeah, but I can buy you them now,” he said in an excited tone, like a little kid on Christmas morning. “I have the money to spoil you. I have the money to give you whatever you want.”

“Luke,” your eyes softened as you reached for the boy, your palm cupping his cheek as he leaned into the embrace. “I don’t need any of that. You’re enough. You were enough then, and you’re enough now. I don’t need some expensive gifts to know that.”

“But I want to give you them,” he murmured, turning his head to press a kiss to your open palm. “And plus, this one is kinda selfish.”

You raised your brows. “How so?” 

“Your ass is gonna look great in that dress,” Luke replied, trying to act cocky and unashamed but it amused you at the way his cheeks flushed pink when he spoke.

“There are many ways you can see my ass without having to drop your paycheck the day you get it,” you snorted, shaking your head.

“But where’s the fun in that?” Luke grinned innocently. “C’mon, we can go out for a nice dinner and have a nice time. Maybe come back here, see how easy that dress is to get off for four hundred dollars.”

You blanched. “Four hundred!?” 

Luke looked sheepish. “It would look really pretty on you, babe.”

“You need to be banned from spending money unsupervised,” you muttered as you leaned forward, pecking his lips. “But thank you, baby.”

He grinned. “Any day.”

“Not any day,” you glared back at him. “No more spontaneous gifts, okay?”

“Hmm.” Daniel hums from where his head lays on Max’s chest, holding his phone too close to his face because he refuses to wear his glasses. No matter how many times his optometrists give an unimpressed glance or Max constantly reassuring him that he looks really good in them, they always manage to find a new hiding spot.

Antares would like to believe he's worth more than 50 dollars, at least. And yet here he was listening to the ransom drop all the way down to 30 bucks. He hadn't even tried freeing himself. If anything he just woke up from a much needed nap (the fact that he could sleep while tied up in a chair said a lot about how little rest he'd been getting).

Can’t remember who he was speaking to but Daniel said that he wanted to be a reserve driver to a team that didn’t want him on track every race because he needs some time off for his mental health. So yes, Liam is the official RB/AT reserve driver. Also yes, he would probably jump in Checo’s seat because he’s not stupid. Also (2) yes, I will be disappointed all the season because that team tainted everything around them and not even Daniel will make me forget about AD21, budget cap or the fact that they’re racists piece of 💩

Tbh, as much as I am enjoying today's collective roasting of Daniel because he essentially fell for that 2 AM "You up? 😘" text (only it was sent from Christian Horner, which... Ew.), the man made the smartest move available.

He secured the McLaren bag 💰 and got out of a situation where he was clearly unhappy, landed a job that pays top dollar (I'm sure of it) with minimum effort (compared to his schedule now).

I'm sure it will involve a bit of a dog and pony show to the benefit of the Red Bull brand, but I sincerely hope he's happier.

That being said, I'm a hater first and foremost so I hope RBR has a shitty season next year both on track and in their catering department. 😇

Superdim Sunday: Chapter 2

If pressed, she would agree that it was a little crazy to drop everything to drive two hours in the hopes of ruining Hammer's night. She felt vaguely embarrassed by herself throughout the drive, fingers wrapped a little too tightly around the steering wheel.

At least no one knew what she was doing. Her masked activities were clandestine. She could do embarrassing shit and not have it bite her in the ass.

"I don't have to do this." Ji-Min tested out the thought. "I could go home and just let him run wild until he gets picked up by the cops or a local suit."

…Nope, bad idea. Ji-Min sneered. The steering wheel creaked under her grip. The thought was extremely displeasing.

She couldn't let someone else handle him. That was her role and no one else got to do it. She was going to find out whatever half-baked plan he had pulled out of the garbage can of his mind, and she was going to thwart him.

That was what she'd been doing for months now. The newspapers would say that she was a rogue vigilante, with varying degrees of approval. They said that she was Hammer's mysterious nemesis, a shadow that only emerged when he was free to drag him to justice.

The truth of it was that Ji-Min was a massive hater and she couldn't stand to let Hammer have anything.

She stopped at a gas station in a bad mood and got an offensively large cup of tea from a faded machine. It tasted shit. She tossed it out the window and got bottled water at the next stop. The drive really wasn't that long, except that she was too keyed up to turn up music and enjoy it.

The closer to confrontation she got, the more wound up Ji-Min felt. The tension eventually got so high that she parked the car and did some furious calisthenics. She glared at anyone who looked at her, defensive about what she knew was weird behavior. It was necessary.

Ji-Min had spent a lot of time in the gym since her powers came in. If she didn't blow off steam, she'd find herself breaking things by accident.

Before she started driving again, she checked Hammer's social media. Ji-Min leaned on the side of her car and smacked on gum while she scrolled.

"heY r U ready to GOooooo," he had sent to Sunspot.

She'd sent back a thumbs up and a sparkly moon emoji. "Go to bed. You have a big day tomorrow, boss."

God, what poor fuckhead was Hammer's 'one true love?' Ji-Min pulled a face and closed the app. Her stomach turned at the thought.

She pushed the disturbing bits away and focused on the eventual crime. If Sunspot was telling him to rest up, then Ji-Min should probably just get a hotel and wait for him to make his move. She sent her sister a text canceling their workout tomorrow morning. Ari sent back a thumbs up and a crying face.

Then she looked up a hotel in the area and checked the price. Feeling spiteful, she logged into Hammer's bank account and sent a $500 transfer to her Swiss bank account. He wouldn't notice. He never did. He might not even know his password. He only ever used his card.

She took a moment to scroll through his recent transactions. Fifty at a gas station, 126 dollars to a pizza place, 7 in ice cream, and a Paypal transfer for 7000 dollars. The note said "clothes."

Her phone chimed. A gray alert came up with some graph and a title about the stock market.

"Oh, fuck," Ji-Min sighed. She opened the app and then went to the settings. She ignored the landing page and its copy of the current stock market happenings. On muscle memory, she opened up the hidden login and typed in the 14 digit code.

The real message showed up.

Warning from Sir Tiger Explosion, it read. Bank robbery this evening in NYC at ….

The tension flooded out of her system. "Again?" Ji-Min snorted. She closed the app and opened up the hater group chat.

Harmes had beat her to it. As she opened it, " 💰 Always love to see someone push the boundaries!!" landed.

Ji-Min cracked a smile. "Innovate. Expand. Boldly go."

"Live laugh love the consistency," said an anon with a pirate hat icon. "Maybe it'll work this time."

"Unlikely," said Harmes. They followed it up with a couple photos of newspaper articles with headlines like "Local Man Attempts to Rob Bank."

Ouch. That wasn't even from the special crimes section. Ji-Min put a crying reaction on the image. Lurkers added crying and laughter reactions as she watched, probably for the same reason.

"Remember when he used the back of his atm withdrawal slip for the ransom note?" Ji-Min typed up. She felt a mean little smile steal across her face.

That got laugh reactions all around.

Feeling better, she shoved her phone back in her pocket and got back in the car. She cranked up the music for the last leg of the drive and arrived at the hotel in a good mood.

She swiped to pay with her Swiss account, and gave a cash tip to the receptionist. She didn't have much to bring in- a gym bag with her change of clothes and kit, as well as the bare basics like a toothbrush and hair supplies. She took her time getting ready by putting her hair up and stacking it with the pins that would support her mask later. When she was done, Ji-Min shrugged on her coat and went for a walk.

She spent an hour casing the city before she decided what to do with her time. Ji-Min got a table at a French restaurant for dinner and ate filet mignon and rabbit. She kicked back in a private corner with a glass of red wine and watched the people eat and walk outside. They were all so distant to her.

She'd never really felt like she was part of the crowd. And now…

Ji-Min finished her glass and left her card carelessly on the table while she went to the ladies room. She saw a server bob their head and hurry over to run the card.

In the bathroom, she checked her hair was staying in place and took a moment to stretch, limbering up her fingers and wrists.

She passed an older woman on her way out. Ji-Min could feel the stare. She didn't deign to look back.

With a yawn, Ji-Min collected her card and slipped it back into her bag. She scribbled a $40 tip onto the receipt and left as much in cash.

It was fully dark out by the time she left. Haunting sirens called out in the distance of the night, tattle tailing on some kind of trouble. She was feeling like trouble herself, personally.

'I'm not ready to go back to the hotel just yet,' Ji-Min decided. She felt the pleasant buzz of anticipation, a thrill down the back of her spine.  Ji-Min slipped her ear buds in and put on something with a thumping baseline beat. She idly used her phone to search the area as she prowled around the streets. The night air was crisp and the air was so fogged with pollution that she couldn't see a single star. It felt exactly like the kind of night for her to be unleashed.

She wasn't too far away from an interesting target.

The Versace store was closed at this hour, and the lights she could see were off. Ji-Min paused outside with her hands in her pockets, looking up. She turned off the music and slipped her headphones into the case.

She could tell that people were still inside. They were probably counting out money and doing inventory. Ja-Min popped in a breath mint and cocked her head at the building, tracking the faint impressions of body heat where workers were moving inside.

It was easier when there were fewer people around. It took her a few minutes to determine how many people were inside and what floors they were on. She casually walked around to the side of the building. She pulled the mask out of her bag and started attaching it, pulling the pins out of her one by one to attach the ribbons to her hair. When she was finished, Ja-Min pulled gloves out of her pocket and slid them on. As she slipped into the shadows, there was no one and no camera to watch her scale the wall.

She settled on a fourth floor window far from any of the lingering employees.

The subtle, cat-burglar type strategy would be to cut a hole in the glass and silently remove it. Hammer would break it with his fist and crash in– but he'd set up a drone first to record it, of course.

Ji-Min took off her gloves so that she could wedge her nails into the frame and pop it clean off. There was an ugly scrape, but the operation was overall very quiet. Ji-Min hummed with concentration and rotated the frame at an angle to maneuver it into the room. She stepped inside and leaned the window against the wall. Then she blinked in the darkness until her eyes adjusted.

She caught her reflection in a mirror while she put her gloves back on. It was hard to tell with her dark eyes, but her pupils were blown out to nearly subsume her whole iris. That was new. The night vision was one of her favorite powers.

When her gloves were back on, she took out a spray bottle and wiped down everywhere she could conceivably have touched on the frame. Then she finally took a look around.

There were cameras.

If the lights had been on, that would have been some small concern. As it was, Ji-Min casually flipped one off and prowled down the deserted department floor. She'd ended up in the home goods section. She dismissed it entirely and crept silently down the stilled escalator.

There was something so poignantly beautiful about the store deserted, dark, and cold.

This was the closest thing to religion that she ever felt.

The first thing she picked up was a thick bangle. It had the brand name emblazoned on it. "This is fugly," Ji-Min said, lips pulling up into a smile. She clapped it onto her wrist. "I don't even want it." She checked the price and let out an incredulous little giggle. "Incredible." She ran a gloved finger down the display and picked up a ring. "Gaudy." She paused. "This has potential, though."

Ji-Min worshiped in a daze as she slipped rings, bangles, earrings, and hair accessories into her bag. She was faintly tempted by shoes and a red dress, but even in her haze she knew better than to take anything that indicated personal information like her size. She could go to another store and buy what she wanted later.

She ended up with an eclectic mix stuffing her purse to the brim. Some of it she would sell, and some she would wear.

She barely remembered leaving. It was as easy as entering had been. She tucked the mask away and made her way back to her bed for the night.

The hotel room was larger than she needed. She turned the bathwater on and asked room service for a pot of tea. When it arrived, she sat it on the edge of the tub and went through her skin care routine. When she finally slipped into the water, she was perfectly relaxed.

After a while, she thought to snake her arm out to grab her phone and check on Hammer again. He'd changed his profile photo since the afternoon. This one was shirtless. Ji-Min let out an annoyed sigh, but her heart wasn't really in it this time. He'd let on more of the details for his plan since she'd last checked.

"The Planetarium?" Her skeptical voice echoed in the steamy air. "Is this going to be like the thing he did with that Aquarium?"

Just like that, her blood pressure was back up.

First, there's this blush-colored sweatshirt that belonged to my teen son who no longer wanted it and gave it to me. He had been given the shirt by one of his friends. 🙏

The hairclip came as a pack of two from Walmart on the clearance shelf and only cost $1.00 for the whole pack. 💗

The paperboy hat belonged to one of my kids when they were teenagers and living at home. I had five at home at once when four were teenagers at the same time, and then one -- our fifth child -- was born later in life, so he was still a baby/toddler at the time they were all teens. 🤟

Needless to say, as a mom, I had my hands full! But I digress, when they all grew up and moved out on their own, one of them rascals left the paperboy hat behind and so I found it when I was going through the aftermath of their departures and put it on. Upon realizing how cute I looked in it, I kept it for myself. 🥰

I honestly don’t know where they got it from in the first place, and I don’t care because I washed it before wear! The gloves, I acquired about eight years ago when I worked at a local, retail store called Ollie’s. It was a bargain outlet where everything was super cheap, and with my additional 20% employee discount, I got 'em for a few bucks when all was said and done. 🏩🛒💰

The versatile, printed neck scarf was given to me by my second-born daughter about a year ago because she was getting rid of some stuff and asked me if I wanted it. She’s a Libra so she cleans her closet out a lot and ditches anything that's in her way or she no longer wants. She will get rid of something she bought last week because it’s simply in her way now. lol I love that about her. She doesn’t form attachments with physical things (unless they’re really sentimental) and her airy vibe gives her that ability to...just...let stuff go. 🙋‍♀️ #byestuff

10:45 am pdt 27 December 2022 Tuesday part 2

since mid 2019 I started having difficulty breathing. Now the incubus keeps on burning up burning 🔥 my back sides and front causing the air in my lungs 🫁 to heat up and choke me to death ☠️ he’s relentless at the moment. Not allowing me to breathe 🧘🏻‍♀️ much unless I’m up 🆙 from bed 🛌. Heat/dehydration can make me tired 😓 tired 😴. But if I can’t breathe 🧘🏻‍♀️ I cannot walk (which I haven’t done very much lately and all year 11:06 am pdt ) 🚶🏿‍♀️🚷 or sleep 💤. 10:50 am pdt. I have never smoked 🚬 anything in my life. Once I ran away from home and someone forced me to try a pipe - and I took the tiniest sample: it tasted 👅 like alcohol. That was all! The only time EVER. My sister had asthma when we were kids. Once I got sick 🤒 from second hand smoke 💨 from my daycare/babysitters and I had to leave school 🏫 to rest. I don’t remember if they stopped smoking 🚬. I remember playing outside a lot at some point even when it was gray and windy 🌬. I think they might have made an extra effort the day they had to bring me back to their house 🏠 from school 🏫. I remember taking a nap 😴 near the front door 🚪 and window 🪟 on the couch 🛋 (I was stilll in elementary school years), & I woke up 🆙 to find the cat 🐈 that normally laid on top of the refrigerator on my legs 🦵 like a loaf 🍞. I think she was a tortoise 🐢 shell 🐚 calico ?? Brown black spotted maybe a white belly? Felicia was her name. Fast forward ⏩ to high school 🏫 years there was a friend I probably spent the night at her place maybe 🤔 3 times? Or 4? She gave me allergy medicine bcz my nose 👃 got congested. I think I saw 👀 her mom smoke once. Eventually she started smoking 🚬 and I think by that time we started growing distant instead of closer. 11:04 am pdt. I was a long distance 🏃🏻‍♀️ runner 🏃🏻‍♀️ in high school 🏫 the last 2 years. My crush 😻 recruited me and the coach asked is this your girlfriend 👧?? Since elementary school 🏫 I was serious 🧐 about running 🏃🏻‍♀️. There were walk Athons to earn money 💰 I think 🤔 for charity?? I think I remember staying until the very end trying to walk as much as I could. I liked to do a type of little gallopy movement when it was only me and my classmates and maybe around family. But when I was home 🏠 I either played dolls/legos/video games or my eyes 👀 were “glued” to the tv 📺 that actually looked a lot like this emoji. Whenever I was out at recess and not stuck doing homework 📚, I was active on the field or blacktop or playground. There were sometimes I played imaginary” house,” pretending to be family with a classmate/friend, whose last name was del grande. Like Ariana grande. She always wanted me to be the baby 👶 🍼. One time ☝️ I walked home 🏠 with her without letting my mom know bcz she told me she had a lot of toys 🧸 and she wanted to show me. I saw her bedroom for a minute with toys 🧸 on her bed 🛏 I think I said “whoow!!” 11:18 am pdt in middle school 🏫 the p.e. Teacher criticized me I think after the first mile we had to do. I walked the end of it, but after she criticized me I worked harder. And she noticed my efforts I think 🤔 bcz when it rained 🌧 we danced inside and she gave me her handmade xeroxed/photocopied play” dollars” to use later on to take a break from future half mile or mile days. 11:22 am pdt pain left side ribs. I remember my partner for the square dance 💃 his name I think was Luis? 11:23 am pdt. Promenade! I remember I wore bell 🔔 bottom/flare pants 👖 bcz they were back in fashion, and unfortunately those shrank or I grew or both. Not a good deal when your parents don’t earn much money 💰. SO. you might have heard about the itch.io bundle for ukraine! which you can find here. the offer ends on the 18th (of march, 2022) i believe.

this game i've actually wanted for a little while, and seeing it in this bundle kind of solidified that i wanted to buy it. it's based on the powered by the apocalypse game rule thingies, which is a much easier system to learn than dnd, if my experience with monster of the week, which is based on the same system, is anything to go by. i've read the guidebook a little bit and it is very explicitly queer and anti-fascist and includes instructions for ensuring the mental safety of the players of the game.

on the search for a slightly improved Improved Disability Pride Flag

so. a couple hours ago @capricorn-0mnikorn answered an ask about the disability pride flag she made. it included an open request for people to try and make new images of this flag, fiddling with colour values and making more hi-res versions. i happen to know my way around a vector software, so i just spent some time fiddling and i have three things to share.

The Denver resident was furloughed in March and rehired in April when his employer Four Seasons Hotels got a Paycheck Protection Plan loan. But he was let go again in June, after the loan money ran out. Kroner, who’s grateful for the financial help, now hopes to start his own business.

“It definitely helped me and I’m sure it helped everyone who needed the $600,” said Kroner, who made more on unemployment than at his old job because of the federal benefit. “But even the regular unemployment portion I’ve been receiving has helped.”

As relief programs that have helped millions come to an end, the pandemic continues. The $600 in federal unemployment benefits was funded by the federal CARES Act, which also sent billions of dollars into the homes of Americans, from the $1,200 stimulus checks to the PPP loans for small businesses to retain workers. There’s general agreement that relief helped many Americans, but there’s debate about whether to extend the programs.

“(The federal benefits) certainly helped to achieve their intended effect of stabilizing income despite large unemployment losses during the worst of the shutdown,” said Chris Brown, director of policy and research at Common Sense Institute, a nonpartisan research organization in Greenwood Village that has followed the state’s related unemployment trends. 

The state added 100,000 workers to the labor force in June, a recovery of about 37% of jobs lost between February and April. But coronavirus infections are on the rise, and new safety restrictions are being rolled out by Gov. Jared Polis.

But, Brown added, there’s still a lot of people out of work.  

“I think that’s reflective of overall lower demand and businesses struggling to bring back customers,” he said. “There’s really two sides to this and policymakers are actively weighing these trade offs.”

Congress returned Monday to figure out what to do extending unemployment benefits. One effort, the $3 trillion HEROES Act, would extend unemployment benefits until January. Another one that would reduce the federal unemployment benefit is backed by Senate Republicans and is still in the works. 

Colorado’s Democratic U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet proposed the Worker Relief and Security Act in May to tie the $600 payment to any change in the unemployment rate. But nothing appears close to getting passed, at least not before the weekend.

“I believe that it was a mistake for us to tie the expanded unemployment benefit to a certain date,” Bennet said in an email. “We need to continue the expanded unemployment benefit and gradually decrease it as the economy improves and unemployment drops to near pre-crisis levels — which is what my proposal would do.”

Money still available

The Colorado Department of Labor and Employment has been letting folks on unemployment know the $600 federal PUC benefit ends July 25. People who are still unemployed after July 25 will receive only regular state benefits, which average much lower than the $600 a week.

However, the state will continue to pay out all sorts of federal unemployment, including PUC, said Cher Haavind, deputy director of the Department of Labor. 

Those federal benefits include:

Pandemic Unemployment Compensation (PUC) — While this benefit ends July 25 in Colorado, workers who were late to claim the benefit may still be qualified if they were unemployed between March 29 and July 25. PUC pay is retroactive. Also, claimants typically file for benefits every other Sunday. For those who file on Aug. 2, they’ll still get that last week of PUC.

Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation (PEUC) — For Coloradans who exhaust their regular 26 weeks of state benefits, PEUC provides an extra 13 weeks of regular unemployment pay. The state labor department is now contacting people whose regular benefits are ending to let them know an extension is available.

Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) — PUA offers a $600 per week payment to gig workers, contractors and the self employed who don’t normally qualify for state benefits. This federal benefit ends Dec. 31.

“We all found ourselves in historically high unemployment and a very short period of time and so every additional benefit that was implemented by Congress has been helpful in making ends meet for hundreds of thousands of people in the state,” Haavind said. “We’ve never had additional benefits to this degree.”

Where to get help

In Grand Junction, the Mesa County Workforce Center ramped up its call center to help answer the influx of unemployment calls. Typically, the call center helps people find a job.

“We’re staffing up that call line, pulling other staff off from other projects and putting them on the call line in anticipation that we’re going to see a huge influx in phone calls from recipients wondering where that additional money is,” Mesa County Workforce Center Director Curtis Englehart said.

Workforce centers scattered all over the state have stepped in to help their communities as the state’s unemployment call center was overwhelmed. At one point, only 6% of callers got answers to their questions. The state department of labor recently rolled out a virtual agent technology from Google to handle simpler questions. It’s now scheduling appointments through August so callers get a call back instead of having to dial and redial the help line for hours. 

But the workforce centers have stepped up to answer those questions and are now moving on as businesses reopen and workers return to regular jobs.

The Pikes Peak Workforce Center opened a temporary facility in June for unemployed workers who needed access to a computer to find a job. The space has 50 computers that are six feet apart instead of three feet. The building is located at 1049 North Academy Boulevard in Colorado Springs and is open by appointment to job seekers through Dec. 11. (Provided by Pikes Peak Workforce Center)

In Colorado Springs, the Pikes Peak Workforce Center set up a temporary site at 1049 North Academy Boulevard. Fifty computer workstations are arranged at a socially-distance-approved 6-feet apart and are available for job seekers in two-hour blocks, said Traci Marques, director of the workforce center targeting residents in El Paso and Teller counties. 

“We’re allowing 30 people at a time to come in and use our computers for anything job-search related,” Marques said. “That gives the opportunity for those who are losing the benefits, on extended benefits or have lost their PUA dollars, they’ll be losing those to come in and really start doing some active job search activities.”

The center also had been handling mostly unemployment-related calls in recent months from residents who couldn’t get through to the state’s call center. But now, the temporary site is focused on finding a job.

“People are wanting to get back to work,” she said. “We’re really trying to make it easier for those on unemployment, especially those who are for the first time on unemployment, that they have access to the technology and a resource and someone to walk it through with them.”

The center moved its workshops and training online, and that’s a bonus for Coloradans even if you don’t live in the Pikes Peak region. Everyone who receives unemployment benefits must register with Connecting Colorado, a job database where companies post openings and the unemployed apply for them. Through that link, any job seeker can also register for a virtual workshop hosted by the Pikes Peak Workforce Center or any other workforce center statewide.

“The great thing with virtual platforms is you can be in a small town with a population of 400 and have access to the internet and you can take one of our workshops,” Marques said.

The Republican’s poll numbers in the past four years hit their highest points that spring and summer. He topped out at 49% approval — solid territory with a disapproval rating 20 points lower.

Since then, his stock has slid precipitously, according to an analysis of survey data by The Colorado Sun. By 2019, as many Colorado voters approved of his job performance as disapproved, and now polls consistently show him in negative territory.

To political observers, the fall in the Republican senator’s approval since he took office in 2015 is pretty much traced to a single source: President Donald Trump. The controversies that surrounded the White House and the president’s confrontational style didn’t sit well with voters. Six months into his first year, Trump’s rating took the same nose dive and never fully recovered.

“In some ways Sen. Gardner is at the mercy of forces that are beyond his control,” said Ryan Winger, director of data analysis and research for Magellan Strategies, a Republican polling firm in Colorado. “When he was first elected in 2014, it was pre-Trump. It may as well have been 200 years ago in terms of the political environment.”

The new environment showcases the challenge ahead for the first-term senator’s reelection bid as the race starts in earnest Wednesday after voters overwhelmingly picked former Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper in the Democratic Party primary.

The Hickenlooper campaign highlighted polling averages showing Gardner trailing his opponent by a larger margin than any of the four other Republican incumbent senators in what the Cook Political Report marks as toss-up races.

A Public Policy Polling survey released Wednesday shows Hickenlooper leading Gardner 51% to 40%. The Democratic firm found 9% were undecided in the poll, which has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.4 percentage points. The survey was paid for by End Citizens United and Let America Vote, groups that endorsed Hickenlooper in April.

The 11-point deficit for the Republican incumbent actually ties his best showing since August 2019, according to The Sun’s review of polling. In the hypothetical matchups, Gardner trailed Hickenlooper by double digits in six polls released between August 2019 and this week. 

“It’s just kind of amazing how identical things are to when we first polled this race when Republicans were trying to repeal the Affordable Care Act at this time three years ago,” said Tom Jensen, the director at Public Policy Polling, a North Carolina-based firm with a national footprint. “The state of things got baked in a long time ago.”

Big money TV ads hurt Gardner — and Hickenlooper’s ratings, too

In an interview Wednesday, Gardner blamed his poor approval ratings on Democrats and dark-money aligned organizations that have spent “millions and millions and millions of dollars on negative ads and negative attacks.” He has allied himself closely with Trump but declined to discuss whether he has helped or hurt his image.

“I think if you look at what we’ve accomplished in the Senate, the people of Colorado are going to be supportive of that,” he said, noting the Bureau of Land Management’s headquarters relocating to Grand Junction and other federal spending bills that benefited the state.

Democratic-aligned nonprofits that don’t disclose their donors began running television ads critical of Gardner in October 2019 and more are expected to saturate the airwaves in the next four months.

But the same attacks are coming for Hickenlooper, too. And Gardner believes voters will sour on Hickenlooper once they learn more about him. 

Gardner pointed to the state ethics commission’s determination that the Democrat violated the state’s constitutional gift ban for accepting corporate-paid travel and the contempt citation for refusing to heed a subpoena and court order to testify. “Coloradans will care very much that one candidate believes he doesn’t have to comply with the law,” Gardner said.

Already, Hickenlooper’s numbers are showing fatigue amid the onslaught of criticism from his Democratic rival, millions in attack ads from Republicans and his own mistakes in the campaign. 

When he left office in early 2019, The Sun’s analysis showed his approval rating at 50% and disapproval closer to 30%. The latest survey from a Democratic pollster in May put his approval at 44% and disapproval at 39%, a significant shift.

Hickenlooper’s campaign manager M.E. Smith said the candidate’s strong primary victory shows the negative attacks won’t work. She wrote in a memo to supporters that voters “know him and trust that he will be an independent voice for Colorado who can change Washington and bring people together to get things done.”

Hickenlooper’s approval rating hit a recent high point in early 2017 at 61% while his disapproval was 28%. And Chris Keating, a top Democratic pollster and Hickenlooper supporter, said the candidate’s numbers historically show better. “Hickenlooper, in general, has been more favorable than unfavorable,” he said. “He was a very well-liked governor.”

Gardner’s allies expect a close race and believe the margin is closing

The rough Democratic primary battle makes Gardner’s camp more optimistic than ever with its $10 million war chest at the ready. “We’ve seen how bad of a candidate (Hickenlooper) is,” said Greg Brophy, a former Republican state lawmaker and top Gardner supporter. “And we’ve seen how good of a candidate Gardner is — and how well-oiled that machine is going to be.”

In a memo issued this week to his top donors, Gardner campaign manager Chris Hansen said he expects it to be a single-digit race. “Independents decide elections in Colorado – they always have and always will,” he wrote. “The Gardner team ran the race we needed to win enough independents in 2014, and we will run the race we need to win in 2020.”

Likewise, outside political allies are expecting a battle much like the close 2014 race where Gardner won by 1.9%. 

Tim Phillips, the president of Americans for Prosperity, went door-to-door canvassing with the conservative organization’s team in the Denver area this week. He said he’s seen Gardner’s numbers improve in recent weeks as the campaign began running ads about his accomplishments in the Senate. 

The group said it plans to spend millions to help Gardner turn out suburban voters. “I do think that he’s in a better place now than he was in the early spring,” Phillips said in an interview. “But he would still be an underdog — and that’s exactly where he was in 2014.”

But one major factor that will determine whether Gardner’s numbers improve ahead of November is the top of the ticket. 

Trump remains deeply unpopular in Colorado and lost the state by 5 percentage points in 2016. Republican and Democratic pollsters in Colorado agree that it’s a tough year for Republicans to run on the same ticket as him.

“To come from behind you need to be liked by those who know you, which is only Cory’s second biggest problem to the fact that he’s tied to Trump, who has even higher unfavorables than he does,” Keating said.
