Since you want rambling I’ll talk about sonic stuff :3
So in the sonic (game) franchise there’s a character called Blaze the Cat who is from a parallel dimension to Sonic’s dimension, called the Sol Dimension! We haven’t seen it a lot, mostly just in one game, Sonic Rush Adventure, which is the sequel to Sonic Rush, the game Blaze was introduced in.
In Rush Blaze ends up in Sonic’s dimension so we see nothing of her dimension but in the sequel we’ve got the reverse with Sonic and Tails ending up in Blaze’s dimension, though they don’t actually know that until midway into the game. Blaze’s world, or at least the parts we visit mostly consists of a bunch of islands in a huge ocean. Blaze is also generally referred to as the princess of an empire, though we don’t ever really get to see anything of that. It mostly matters in regards to the fact that she has control/possession of this world’s equivalent of the Chaos Emeralds in Sonic’s dimension: the Sol Emeralds (hence the name of the dimension).
This is in some way her royal duty. Also the Sol Dimension is implied to be, effectively, Australia? The other main character in Rush Adventure, Marine, has an Australian accent and most other characters are all Koalas (with the exception of all the pirates that roam around, which are robots). Notably, in the games I’m pretty sure there has never been an Australia equivalent shown in Sonic’s world and in the Archie comics Australia is royally fucked up geographically and politically so I’m starting to suspect that Sonic’s world is oddly anti Australia lmao
(Note: this is what Australia looks like in Archie and it’s called Downunda, spelled exactly like that. Though tbh that fits in with the names for other continents and comes from Mobius, the comic planet, being a far future Earth that got nuked by aliens but that’s a bit much to get into lmao)
Tumblr media
Anyway, so we haven’t really gotten to see a whole lot of Blaze in the games on account of how hard it is to justify her character showing up, but one notable example is Sonic 06, released one year after Sonic Rush and one year before Sonic Rush Adventure.
In Sonic 06 Blaze is a very prominent character but she’s actually not at all the same character as in Rush! At least, not backstory wise. Where normally she comes from a parallel dimension, here she’s the companion of Silver, a character from a future timeline after a disastrous monster destroys Sonic’s world. Notably, said creature is a fire creature and Blaze still retains her pyrokinetic powers that she had in Rush as well (she uses it to propel herself as if she had rockets in her heels!).
Silver at one point in the game learns that you can seal the fire creature that’s wrecking his timeline inside of someone who’s royalty with a chaos emerald and goes back to the future to try and use the same technique to seal the creature inside of himself but it doesn’t work. Blaze then takes the Chaos Emeralds he has off him and steps in to do the sealing herself, saying that her soul is made of fire so she can seal a fire creature. This actually does work and Blaze asks Silver to seal her in another dimension, but he doesn’t in time and Blaze kinda just… ascends and fades away?
She’s gone for the rest of the game and no explanation is given for what exactly happened there so there’s been tons of discussion about it! The game ends by retconning its entire plot but Blaze is still notably absent from a time/dimension fuckery bit in the final story where every other character, no matter what timeline they were in at the time, is present.
Apparently the game (which was horribly rushed and crunched) was originally meant to properly tie into Sonic Rush and that’s why Blaze is in the game but the idea was scrapped, with Blaze remaining in the game but untethered to her original appearance. The game IS explicitly canon, because it introduced Silver and he would continue to make appearances throughout the franchise, so I posit that Blaze’s sealing in 06 kind of created the Sol Dimension, with the retcon fuckery at the end meaning that she and Sonic wouldn’t know each other (in time for Sonic Rush) with the Sol Emeralds being some mashup of the Chaos Emeralds used in the sealing and the fire demon that was sealed, hence why the Sol Emeralds have a bunch of fire associations.
Bonus points towards this:
A) The Sol Emeralds and the Chaos Emeralds are explicitly stated to have some kind of attraction to each other, nearly merging Sonic’s and Blaze’s dimensions together during Sonic Rush
B) The Deity that the sealed fire demon, Iblis, was a split half of is called Solaris, tying well into the name of the Sol Dimension and Emeralds
C) Blaze and Silver are still always paired together in games where they both appear, in the DS version of Sonic Colours they even have this piece of dialogue
Tumblr media
While Blaze appearances in the games are not super frequent she does show up decently often in the 2 American comic runs! And recently Sega released an official cook book which gives an oddly large amount of insight into Sol Dimension royal life (more than the games ever have LMAO)
In conclusion: Blaze is a cool character with an interesting relation to the game timeline and the way that dimensions work in the franchise that we nonetheless don’t know super much about. I wish we got more insight into her world :3
tthis was very interesting thank you!! can’t believe I blog from Blaze’s world.. also fucking “downunda” that’s so funny ajdjd tbh this is pretty much straight up how I pronounce it so I can’t even be mad lmao
also i’ve seen the sonic 06 fandubs but notably.. the plot is very different lol so it’s fun to finally have some context with that scene!! i think ur headcanon makes a lot of sense and it’s canon to me now<3

Sonic may actually be lost royalty
Tumblr media
I keep going down these rabbit holes I shouldn’t go down BUT! Although this theory is one that I don’t fully believe in (unlike the infinite/solaris theory and the chaos emerald theory) I still have a good argument that I want to talk about very bad.
I also tried to make this as short as possible but there’s a lot of ground to cover, but at least it’s not the infinite/solaris theory. But I have a TLDR at the end.
[Spoiler Warning for Sonic and the Black Knight]
let’s start with a ✨numbered list✨
1. Blaze the Cat
Tumblr media
Blaze is the biggest caveat for this theory, but I think it’s best to start with her.
Now, firstly I need to clear up some things.
Tumblr media
[Eggman: My world...]
Tumblr media
[Eggman Nega: and my world...]
Tumblr media
[Eggmen: are in a manner, inextricably linked!]
Tumblr media
[Blaze: Like two Eggmans?]
Part of the Blaze’s world is that it’s a parallel universe. Parallel Eggmen, Parallel emeralds, Everything else that isn’t stated outright. Like how Tails and Marine are definitely counterparts. Seeming as Tails came from South Island and Marine came from southern island, Tails is definitely based on a kitsune and Marine, in theory, based on a tanuki.
And, although not stated completely, Blaze and Sonic are universal counterparts.
Tumblr media
[From Sonic Wiki: Blaze was designed as a charater who was equivalent yet and alternate version of Sonic’s character.]
Much like the Sol and Chaos emeralds, Sonic and Blaze are a mirror version of one another, although slightly different.
Alright, now that we have that out of the way:
Looking at the connections between the others, Sonic and Blaze seem, a bit too different.
The Sol and Chaos emeralds fulfill the same role, although their different appearance, and have a similar story.  Tails and Marine fulfill the same role, although their different appearance, and have a similar story. The Eggmen fulfill the same role, although their different appearance, and have a similar story.
Blaze and Sonic fulfill the same role, although their different appearance, and have a... completely different story.
Blaze was born to a royal family, and set to protect the Sol Emeralds and the Jeweled Scepter as her birthright, and it’s somewhat hinted that her powers may also be a birthright. Sonic, on the other hand, has no known past, and seems to have just run into the Chaos Emeralds by accident.
You could claim that Blaze does take on the role of both Sonic AND Knuckles, which is fair and stated on the wiki, however Knuckles is also never stated to be any kind of royalty, and certainly doesn’t have that kind of past, his past being one of the more tragically alone ones.
And here’s something interesting.
Time has warped our vision of Blaze. We all know her as “Princess Blaze the Cat.” But from watching Sonic Rush, her opening game... she is never mentioned to be a princess until the very end.
Tumblr media
[Burning Blaze: As princess, it is my duty to protect the Sol Emeralds...]
From what I remember, this is the FIRST mention of her royal status.
From this game’s viewpoint, they reveal the mirror status of the dimensions. They then show both Blaze and Sonic having mirror super transformations using their emeralds, highly implying that Sonic and Blaze were mirror versions. (also this was implied already by just Blaze’s shoes.) and then it’s revealed that Blaze is royal, and a princess.
So if she’s the mirror of Sonic, what does that mean for Sonic? Especially right after showing the two of them being, well, mirrors.
2. King Arthur
Tumblr media
SATBK is much less transparent about the counterpart universe thing.
Now this is an alternate universe, set up by Secret Rings, and surprisingly not just a story Sonic told as an elaborate excuse.
They don’t hide obivous Sonic characters being put into roles, and their in these roles for a reason.
Blaze and Silver as Percival and Galahad, the knights who quested together for the holy grail. Knuckles as Gawain literally only because of “Gawain and the Green Knight” But I respect that so much. Jet as Lamorak because of Lamorak’s fiery temper and competitiveness.  Shadow as Lancelot because he’s the “closest knight to the king” stated in game (👀) Tails as a Blacksmith because that’s p much the medieval version of a mechanic. Amy as the Lady of the Lake because like. Fuck she’s the most powerful one there. (but seriously, in forces she’s shown to be the most level headed leader and strangest, especially in Sonic’s absence. As well as “sensing” that he was still alive and having a past in tarot.) And Merlina as Merlina because... well that’s a whole other theory.
(all my theories are being brought up in the post. like i know the first two were expamples of theories I fully belive in but damn this is like a avengeners, ok,)
But Sonic as King Arthur makes sense when it’s revealed. Although he wasn’t anyone’s counterpart in Secret Rings (because secrets rings was confused as hell) He is in this game, and as the ring leader of everyone following him in SATBK, it makes sense.
Although something that was never brought up...EVER is the Knight’s backstories, which are EXTREMELY important not only in Arthurian legends, but for the knights in Sonic lore. All of the knight’s mentioned backstories are important to their character, in both contexts. Although their never brought up.
*DEEP BREATH* Alright. The similarities between Sonic Character/Knight backstories.
Shadow and Lancelot have pretty simmilar backstories when getting down to it. Shadow/Lancelot were both raised for greatness, but still outshined by Sonic/Arthur. Although remaining loyal to them, even if for Shadow it’s only in times of need. Shadow doesn’t want to admit he’s a supporting role to Sonic, although Sonic generations kinda throws that Idea out of the water when Shadow cheers Sonic on while watching from the sidelines, much like early Lancelot.
For Blaze and Percival, in multiple interpretations Percival is of noble birth. Upon meeting Sonic’s Gang/The Knights, Blaze/Percival get’s inspired by their heroics and eventually joins them.
“Lancelot and Percival prove morally superior to Gawain who follows the rules of courtliness to the letter rather than the spirit.“ Is an actual quote from Wikipedia. Although it is VERY hard to find a concrete backstory for Gawain other than “separated from his home”, I think this proves enough. As well as the Gawain and the Green Knight story (in which Gawain tries to slay the green knight and then he picks up his head and says “see you in a year” is pretty representative of Knuckles constantly breaking the master emerald in a comedic light.)
Lamorak/Jet are known for challenging Arthur/Sonic to competitions.
Galahad/Silver are searching for an object/person aided by Percival/Blaze
So now that we’re all good, do you see the similarities between part one.
Although everyone else has given backstory similarities, Sonic is given none, seeming as, as far as we know, Sonic HAS no backstory.
But isn’t it interesting that King Arthur’s backstory is being lost royalty? And the secret son of the king? Wack.
3. Sonic Fucking Underground
Tumblr media
Now, most of you are probably unfamiliar with Sonic Underground. Good.
If you’re not, you watched it as a kid and you’re nostalgic, and let me tell you I watched the entire show recently and it’s not as good as you remember.
But Sonic Underground’s quality and history could be a post on it’s own, it doesn’t matter here. What matters is the plot:
Tumblr media
[From Sonic Wiki: Sonic, Sonia, and Manic are the children of Queen Aleena, the rightful ruler of Mobius and are pursued relentlessly by Doctor Robotnik and his bumbling bounty hunters sidekicks, Sleet and Dingo. As infants, the siblings were separated and placed in hiding to fulfill a prophecy made by the Oracle of Delphius (a spoof of the Oracle of Delphi of Ancient Greece) that the triplets would grow up to find their estranged mother, overthrow Robotnik and take their places once more as Mobius' rightful rulers.]
FORGOTTEN ROYALTY YOU SAY.
Now, Sonic Underground is VERY SEPARATED from Sonic Lore, and nothing has ever taken from it besides Manic appearing in some comics, although from what I know he’s never mentioned to be Sonic’s brother. So This is the part I always take with a grain of salt, however;
4. In conclusion/TLDR
We have Two Instances of Sonic being lost Royalty (One in a separate reality and one in a separate continuity) We have Two Instances of Dimentional Counterparts of Sonic being Royalty (Blaze and King Arthur) We have zero given backstory for Sonic We have Three instances of Sonic, or a counterpart, being royalty
And from what I remember hearing, three’s a pattern.

If you had full creative freedom for a brand new Sonic cartoon, what would you do with it?
This is by no means a complete list of what I'd do, but it gives you a general idea all the same.
- Since Sonic X was long ago by this point, I think it'd be nice to have another attempt at an anime, particularly if it looked something like the OVA or the animated intro for Riders. The actual art direction would basically take the Modern designs, but place them in a world that combines the best visual elements of SA1 and the Classics/Advances/Mania.
- I don't care if the writers are Japanese or American. Treating one as better simply because they're Japanese/American is a tad too elitist and extremist IMO, especially since neither of them have perfect marks when it comes to writing for this franchise. Whoever the writers are, all that matters is that the writing is good.
- It would have a lot more in common with the game universe. Since there have been so many adaptations that practically make a point about doing their own wacky thing (even the ones that claim to be linked to the games...), I think a more genuinely faithful adaptation would be welcome. There would be minor differences of course, and I'm open to taking notes from the better aspects of certain adaptations, but the overall spirit and characterizations would be reasonably consistent with the games.
- Stories would be brand new. Callbacks and references to existing plots is fine, and I wouldn't necessarily mind a show to the side that tackles adaptations ala Pokemon Origins, but overall, I'd rather have new refreshing adventures rather than adapt SA1/SA2 for the millionth time.
- The tone would pretty much be like SA1. Funny and tense in equal measures, never goes too far in either direction. Whether it's a funny moment or a serious moment, it would be sincere. Self-aware enough to be able to acknowledge the weirdness and be willing to poke fun at itself, but not to the point of being overly self-deprecating and pandering to the franchise’s detractors.
- The lore would connect certain plotlines to each other on SOME occasions, and only if the logic was reasonable and kept to a minimum. It would not be all tied together in an overly contrived manner that ends up leaving no interesting questions. In other words, the S3&K/SA1 connection through Angel Island's lore would be fine, but there'd be no “Did you know the Black Arms worshipped Solaris, went to war with Chaos, were the offspring of Dark Gaia, and wrote the Arabian Nights???” bollocks.
- Sonic, Tails, Amy and Cream would make up the main quartet, with their personalities and bonds bouncing off each other. Other characters would appear and be of importance, but only when their involvement is justified. Said characters including - but not limited to - Knuckles, Team Dark, the Chaotix, Blaze, Big, G-Merl, and even Tikal and Chaos.
- Likewise, Eggman and his Badnik army would naturally be the main villains. Other villains who aren't affiliated with him are free to exist and get their own time in the spotlight (as long as they're not shit and don't need to upstage the doctor to look credible), but Eggman is a plague to the world in spite of his eccentric qualities, and is treated accordingly. He does what he wants, and unless you’re Sonic and/or his friends, there’s not a thing you can do about it.
- Since they appeared in Sonic Forces Mobile, I would MAYBE be willing to include Tangle and Whisper if they were allowed. Starline too, but only if he keeps his simp privilege this time, if ya know what I’m saying. The Hard-Boiled Heavies would definitely be there, because they're too good to be only used once.
Regarding certain characters in particular:
- Sonic is not dumb. Nor is he an asshole. He can be rough around the edges, he can make hasty decisions depending on whether he feels it’s the right thing to do, but at the end of the day, he’s still as good a guy as any good guy could be, and as long as you’re not a villain or a Penders-tier asshole, he’ll be friendly with you. You’d still have to deal with quips of course, but that’s just how he is, right?
- Tails maintains his independent streak from SA1, but he still thinks the world of Sonic and would drop everything in an instant if the hedgehog ever needed his help. Though his more cautious approach occasionally clashes with Sonic being a little more gung-ho (albeit not to the point of flanderization), he always has full faith in his big bro.
- The handling of Amy's crush would be perfectly balanced. Not too overwhelming to the point of acting irrational and chasing Sonic like a loony, but not too downplayed to the point where it might as well not be there at all. That said, more focus would be placed on her other traits and interests, such as her tarot cards and her bond with Cream.
- Knuckles would still be prone to gullible and less-than-flattering moments, because it's Knuckles, but more focus would be given to his admirable attributes, like his expertise in translating ancient texts, and occasionally making good points when in an clash of ideas with Sonic.
- Shadow's backstory would remain the same at its core (though maybe without the aliens), but it'd be altered to be less edgy. For example, rather than getting capped, Maria would succumb to her illness, and Gerald's anger would instead be the result of feeling betrayed by G.U.N. for denying him the means/funds to be able to cure her.
- Metal Sonic is fiercely loyal to Eggman, but his identity crisis would also be on full blast, and eventually he'd realise the oxymoron of believing himself to be Sonic while working for Eggman. Rather than turn traitor and wear elf shoes however, Metal would try to rationalize this to himself... with insane results. Eggman knows about this, and would humor it as long as it benefits him. He'd probably also bring out the other Mecha Sonics now and then for no other reason than to confuse Metal even more. Because he's a dick.
- The Sol Dimension now includes Soleanna, which would be the main kingdom. (It's already got Sol in the name anyway.) Since Blaze would be the ruler because of this, his sadly means that Elise would probably have to get cut, but ah well. Due to the change in context, Solaris would be built up as the Sol Dimension's equivalent to Chaos, with more focus on their contrasts (Chaos is water while Solaris is light, Chaos looks aquatic/reptilian while Solaris looks like a bird, Chaos' turn to evil was caused by an ancient event while Solaris' turn to evil was caused by scientists, etc).
- If Silver were in this show, he'd be no more of a casual acquaintance to Blaze than he would be to Sonic. Instead, her tagalong would be Marine. Though Blaze would still get annoyed by Marine's antics at first, she would come around to gaining more respect for her whenever the situation justified it.
- Trudy would-

[SONIC ARTICLE] The 2010 Sonic Bible: EXPLAINED
Tumblr media
Okay, I’ve seen some people curious asking about the Sonic Bible, and what it is, so let me give you a basic run-down: There exists FOUR Sonic Bibles.
This isn’t some sort of religious text featuring Sonic, instead, it has the bible name becuase it was written by a lot of different authors.
These Sonic Bibles were created to explain the Sonic Series lore at the time they were created, and try to keep Sonic Media consistent at the time.
The first one was made in the U.S., and in it, it gives us details like how Sonic was originally brown, and how he was friends with an scientist named Dr. Ovi Kintobor, and how an accident featuring a rotten egg and the Chaos Emeralds created Dr. Ivo Robotnik.
The second one was made for the Sonic SatAM series, it was used for the cartoon and Archie Sonic as well. It gives lore details such as Mobotropolis, how Robotnik took over and it became Robotropolis, Sally, Antoine, Bunnie, etc.
The third one was made in Japan, it featured some really unique backstory for Sonic, it talked about how an American woman created a story about a Blue Hedgehog named Sonic, inspired after her husband, who was a pilot who fought in World War 2. It was implied that Sonic was fiction within fiction, but at the same time, it seemed that he was also real for that world.
“The story of a man who tirelessly sought to fly his plane at yet-unknown speeds.
His hair, always standing up, led to him being called the “Hedgehog.”
The nose art on the plane he flew depicted Sonic.
He got married to an author of children’s literature, and she wrote a children’s story about a hedgehog that was based on him. His flight jacket still exists today.”
The fourth one is the 2010 Sonic Bible, it was created around that time to make sure all Sonic Media would follow suit, the Sonic Movie follows it to a degree, IDW Sonic follows it, and the games follow it. And I’m going to give you LOTS of details about the 2010 Sonic Bible.
The 2010 Sonic Bible was created to give multiple details about the Sonic Series, the character’s age, height, weight, etc. There’s also reference sheets for each character.
The bible also features rules for the Sonic Series, saying what is and what isn’t considered canon in the Games’ universe. Keep in mind that these seem more focused on the Modern side of the series, but the Classic Series could also follow some of these rules:
 Hyper Forms and Super Emeralds:
Hyper Sonic won’t return, Takashi Iizuka himself said so in SXSW. Super Emeralds and Hyper Sonic, Hyper Knuckles and Hyper Tails aren’t canon. These kind of details will only be referenced in material dedicated to tell the history of the Sonic series, such as ‘History of Sonic Books’.
Tumblr media
(Material like this)
Super Tails and Super Knuckles:
Even though Tails and Knuckles have went super in the past in the Mega Drive trilogy, they can’t tap into their super forms anymore. At most, it’ll be something like Sonic Heroes. Only male hedgehogs can achieve Super Forms.
Burning Blaze:
Even though Burning Blaze could be considered a “Super” form, the Bible doesn’t believe so to be the case, since Blaze is the guardian of the Sol Emeralds. The form she obtains with them, Burning Blaze, is different from a Super Form.
There exists Two Worlds in the Sonic-verse:
Tumblr media
This one Takashi Iizuka has made clear in a couple of interviews, and he has given this information to the fandom since 2010, around the release of Sonic Colors.
Basically, in the games’ universe, there exists Two Worlds or Planets:
There is Planet Earth, this one is home to humans, and is where games like Sonic Unleashed, Shadow the Hedgehog and the Sonic Adventures happened.
And also there’s Sonic’s World,  places on it look totally alien to our world, inhabited by Anthros, crazy colours, concepts, rules etc. This planet is where games like Sonic Colours, Sonic Lost World and Sonic Forces happened.
Those two planets are 'connected' by a ‘gate’ of sorts, but while the two planets’ societies clearly interact with each other, they don’t always do. Some events may happen in one world, but they won’t have repercussions on the other. It seems that this gate is more of something exclusive or difficult to access.
[I am personally adopting as a headcanon the way the Sonic Movie explain this, they use Warp Rings]
Earth’s Moon:
The moon is still destoyed after the events of Sonic Adventure 2, but its’ orbit changed, we are looking at it from the other side.
Dr. Eggman Nega:
Tumblr media
Eggman Nega is Dr. Eggman’s descendant from the far future. He comes from Silver’s time, and is Silver’s rival.
[Yes, it seems that Dr. Eggman eventually had kids in some point in the future]
Sonic’s World and Earth exists within the same universe:
Ok, Sonic’s World and Earth are separated, but how? By dimensions? It doesn’t seem so. The bible says that they are two distinct planets that are in the same universe.
“Also, when making a game, you have to choose to either set it in Sonic's world (without people) or on "Earth" (with people.) Mobius is an official thing in Sonic's universe, but it is not the name of the world itself. It's actually the Sonic universe's equivalent to Mars.”
It seems that Sonic’s World and Earth inhabit the same solar system.
And okay, that’s all we know that the bible has to share right now. It certainly contains LOTS more details, but it’s an internal archive that people working for the Sonic Games consult to know about the lore.
This bible was probably in use for the Sonic Series as early as 2010, but some fans also think that it could have been used for Unleashed as well, since in that game, Sonic travels through the world, and doesn’t meet much anthros in his travels except for Tails and Amy.

My Old Sonic Headcanons
I had shit tons of Sonic headcanons that I added to some page on my now abandoned technical main blog, you can read them all here if you want but I’m just gonna paste them here and provide commentary because I think that would be fun to do and that post I reblogged about blog themes or whatever reminded me of it. All of these are fuckin years old btw, just gonna do commentary in brackets.
- Sonic has a house hidden in Christmas island, nobody knows about it, and he himself only visits it to store junk from his adventures (This headcanon is completely mine and I submitted it to @hedgecanons, a now defunct Sonic headcanon blog I really liked. It was also one of their last posts so I feel pog about that one. I still like this headcanon a lot actually, just because it ties Christmas Island into his character again and provides an excuse for Sonic to not keep all his shit around, like Chip’s bracelet and stuff)
- Vector wrote the Chaotix theme song (Also mine, I just think this is a cute idea)
- The Riders games take place after Chronicles, in the time period where Sonic and friends were in the Twilight Cage, Eggman conquered the world. Sonic and friends tackled his authority, but couldn’t change the world from it’s futuristic state (Basically used to justify why Riders has such a futuristic aesthetic since Chronicles’ cliffhanger ending has one too. Now I just ignore Chronicles because it’s non canon and I just don’t even worry about when and how the Riders games take place)
- There are 35 unexplained Chaos Emeralds across the classic games. These “Pseudo-Emeralds” were created by 5 separate Echidna clans in an attempt to rival the real Chaos emeralds. This is the technology that Tails uses in Sonic Adventure 2 with his fake emerald (I’m pretty sure there’s actually a fuller post on @green-hell-zone somewhere that explains this in greater depth? But the idea was basically that like, if you take every Classic Sonic game that doesn’t have 7 Chaos Emeralds, and you treat it as though all of those Chaos Emeralds are completely unique and non-recurring, then you’d have 35 Chaos Emeralds. So we can just pretend that 5 echidna clans made a full set of 7 each and that’s how we got to that 35. Iirc the 35 are: 16 Chaos Emeralds in Spinball, 8 Chaos Emeralds in Fighers, 6 Chaos Emeralds in Sonic 1, and I believe the remaining 5 come from Sonic Blast? Or one of the Gamegear games anyway. I don’t really subscribe to this anymore because I’m less inclined to wanting my fictional universes to be mechanically consistent and have meaningful lore or whatever, but I still think this is a neat way to justify the numbers being so fucky)
- SEGA exists in the Sonic Universe. All they do is make pachinko machines (This is sorta cute so I still like it, that being said I’m not sure if this is mine or I stole it from someone else)
- Big is incredibly musically talented. He can easily pick up and play almost any instrument flawlessly (I think I was just into the idea of Big being weirdly gifted at everything - he was able to fly one of the Tornado variants without any experience after all)
- Knuckles has a Knuckles chao that guards the Master Emerald when he isn’t there. The chao is incredibly strong, and she’s got a few buddies (none of which are other character chao) to help her fend off Eggman and the like. Knuckles named her “Tikal” (The implication that a single Chao could fight off Eggman is a bit odd, but otherwise I actually like this one - it’s cute and has nice sentiment to it and serves as an explanation for why Knuckles isn’t constantly chained to the Master Emerald, this one also might be stolen but I’m pretty sure it isn’t)
- The prototype design for Blaze is her equivalent to Sonic’s dark form (Prototype in question is this old design, and this is another one I maybe stole, but ngl I’d rather I stole this since I think this one is cringe as fuck and I hate Dark Sonic and don’t think Blaze needs an equivalent, at the same time though headcanons that incorporate prototypes and shit are pretty neat imo so maybe I should be more proud of this)
- Cream and Cheese often play a “prank” where one of them goes missing. They do this so Vanilla will get the Chaotix over, and they often stay and talk for a while. Cheese isn’t too fond of Charmy though (I think this is basically a shipping thing? Cause Vector’s into Vanilla. But I don’t really care about this one at all, like I enjoy Vector a lot and he deserves a shot at his milf goddess but this one’s still sorta boring)
- Sonic Pocket Adventure is the final story in the classic era, and the first in the modern era (I think I did steal this but also I think wherever I stole this from is where I learned Sonic Pocket Adventure existed so props for that I guess, also I think this headcanon is from when I was obsessed with the idea of a master timeline or whatever so there has to be a bridge between classic and modern, so)
- Sonic is multilingual (All the dude ever does is travel, why not?)
- Shadow speaks literally every language, verbal and sign (Shadow is the Ultimate Life Form designed to help humanity so I feel like why not program him with omnilingal abilities?)
- If Silver decided to live in the present day, he’d want to learn everything he could about the world he never had growing up, and would likely become a botanist to study all the plants he never had in his time (Still cute but why be a botanist when he can run a cute flower shop with his own home-grown garden instead? This is maybe stolen)
- At the end of Adventure 2, Shadow (without his inhibitor rings) flew near the moon and used Chaos Control to gather all the space debris and “fix” the moon. Dust settled over time too, which gave it it’s colour (This one is mine I think, basically just wanted a better reason that the moon is normal than “it’s facing the other way”. Also helps justify Shadow falling after the battle when Sonic didn’t - fully aware that the actual reason is because Sonic is acclimated to his Super form and Shadow isn’t but still)
- If the government didn’t shut down Project Shadow, Gerald would not have found a way to cure Maria of her disease, but rather find a sort of medicine that would seriously help her and prevent her death. She would still suffer from the disease, but would spend her life pursuing a career in medicine and later discovering a cure for it, and many other diseases (I don’t even get the point of this one? The idea of Maria becoming a doctor is cute but do we need all this extra shit?)
- Little Planet and the Lost Hex are actually moons of Sonic’s homeworld (Definitely remember stealing this but I really like this one still, adds to the alien feel of the planet and justifies said planet’s additional satellites)
- Boom Sonic’s neckerchief was a gift from his mother shortly before she passed away (Wow this is just edgy and sad for no reason, I think I stole it too. Btw I say “I stole it” but I think literally everything I stole was just from hedgecanons anyway so it’s not like the original posts were hard to find)
- Sonic 4 is a dream Sonic has at the end of Lost World, reminiscing about the “good old days” (Also stolen, the actual supposed canon of Sonic 4 is already a mess especially now with Mania existing, so it being a dream is way easier, Lost World specifically since Sonic goes to nap in the last cutscene or whenever)
- While most see Big as somewhat of a goofball, Sonic highly respects Big and his abilities, mostly due to his assistance in the Chaos 6 fight (Maybe stolen? I feel like Sonic just respects most people inherently though so this is probably a bit redundant, but I guess Big helping against Chaos 6 would further Sonic’s opinions of the dude. Justice for Big is probably the main reason I liked this headcanon though)
- As Tails grows older, he learns to use his tails as additional limbs, often multitasking in the workshop with them (Probably stolen but this is a reasonable extension of canon to begin with given he can grip toothpicks with his tails in Lost World)
- Knuckles isn’t the last echidna, but the species is highly endangered (Fairly whatever idea, probably just comes from the assumption that no way Chaos wiped out every Echidna and that the Knuckles clan probably didn’t totally genocide every other clan they warred with)
- After joining GUN, Shadow reached the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in just under a year (Stolen for sure, also why would I care about this enough to have it on my headcanons page, also funnily enough Shadow got retconned out of ever being a part of GUN recently, which I actually think is really dumb and just let him be part of it, but still)
- Blaze can’t cook, like, at all (Think I mistook Sonic Channel artwork for fanart and decided to headcanon this because of that, of course that means this is actually canon)
- In every single continuity, Sonic is a chilli dog connoisseur (I mean this is basically canon anyway, right?)
- Rouge was an incredibly skilled jewel thief until GUN caught her. They offered her a bargain: she could stay out of prison by becoming a spy for them. Since she knew how high security GUN prisons were, she decided to stay. She still wonders what it would be like if she could pull off one more heist, and she would have, were it not for Shadow (This is absolutely stolen and I can’t even bring myself to care about this one - also surely Rouge would take said high security as a challenge?)
- The Metal Sonic from CD and Heroes is the original Metal Sonic, every one after was a fake by Eggman. Metal destroyed his blueprints at one point however, which is why we haven’t seen a lot of Metal clones recently (A fake by Eggman as though he didn’t make them in the exact same way? This one’s pretty dumb)
- E-123 Omega is Eggman’s second strongest robot, losing to Metal Sonic (This is probably just canon anyway, right? Omega’s pretty tough)
- Sonic CD takes place a few weeks after Sonic 3 & Knuckles. Tails decided to work on improving the tornado, and Sonic decided to go adventure for a while. This is further supported if you consider Silver Sonic and Mecha Sonic as prototypes to Metal Sonic (I actually think I came up with this before Mania was even announced lol. Honestly Silver and Mecha as prototypes could be a standalone headcanon. But tbh I still stand by CD taking place after 3&K as being a better timeline just because of the Silver and Mecha as prototypes thing, in my mind it feels weird for Eggman to use Metal Sonic, then Silver Sonic, then Mecha Sonic, but then just return to Metal Sonic again)
- Sonic’s SOAP shoes were designed specifically for grinding, and he used them in that game as a sort of “training wheel”. After mastering the technique by the end of the game, he shelved the shoes, seeing no other use for them (Stolen but fair enough honestly, plus ties into the house headcanon - Sonic shelved the SOAP shoes at the Christmas Island house)
- Shadow and Tails may not speak often, but Shadow occasionally drops by Tails’ workshop to share blueprints of machines that were used aboard the ARK, as he doesn’t want them to go to waste. He doesn’t want to show them to Eggman due to his evil nature, and he doesn’t trust GUN with them either. Tails is the next best thing (Wow real positive headcanon, Tails as “the next best thing”. Very stolen this one is, but tbh I still sorta like it because Shadow and Tails interactions are pretty rare)
- Eggman felt betrayed by his grandfather due to his legitimate attempts to destroy the world, and as such, wanted to disown himself from the Robotnik family. He took on the nickname Sonic gave him, “Eggman” (I’m pretty sure the Robotnik name is canon to JP Sonic lore now such that Ivo Robotnik is the real name with Eggman being the nickname, so I think this headcanon basically exists just so we can have a better reason for Eggman to stick with the name change? But this contradicts canon since he calls himself Eggman in SA2 even before learning Gerald’s true intentions, ergo it sucks. Moreover SA2′s Eggman is pretty shit imo and it’s weird to me that he comes across as genuninely uspet about Gerald being evil or whatever - if they had written it as Eggman thinking “why would he destroy the planet with me on it?” I’d be okay with it but as it stands Eggman shouldn’t be bothered about Gerald wanting to destroy the world, ergo why would he disown the Robotnik name?)
- Silver and Mighty would quickly become best friends if they were to meet (I don’t really have any thoughts on this one, it’s sorta just cute and a new character interaction so, whatever)
- Bean the Dynamite is literally fearless (I think I had just seen his appearance in Archie and decided that this makes sense, and tbf it does)
- The Super Emeralds are directly tied to the altar found in Hidden Palace zone, as well as the Master Emerald. As such, if one were to repair the altar, they could turn the Chaos Emeralds into Super Emeralds (Might be stolen? Definitely just exists as a headcanon for that master lore thing so I could have a reason the Super Emeralds don’t exist, but then Mania came along so...)
- Vanilla owns a Chao Garden. The first Chao in this garden was Cheese, whom Vanilla gave to Cream (Yeah this is nice actually, might be mine too)
- Following the events of Sonic CD, Metal (who survived) found the robotic remains of Silver Sonic and Mecha Sonic. He integrated these parts into himself, and thus became Neo Metal Sonic (Hey it’s more reason than we actually get for how this happened, might be stolen but I still like this one somewhat)
- The yellow Shadow Android was Eggman’s final attempt at creating a Shadow Android. It worked fantastically, but its advanced AI chip combined with its memories made it realise Eggman wasn’t the guy to work for. He opted to reside on the ARK where he serves as its guardian, to the knowledge of the real Shadow. He took on a name based on the prototype files for Project Shadow: Terios (This is extremely stolen - no way I’d come up with this alone. The yellow Shadow Android is a multiplayer exclusive playable character in Shadow the Hedgehog by the way. I like Terios as this thing’s name for the same reason I liked that Blaze prototype design headcanon thing, incorporates development history stuff in a cute way, but tbh this is otherwise kind of a needlessly complicated mess of a headcanon, really it’s better as the synopsis for a fanfic than as a headcanon)
- Bark, Bean and Fang somehow got sucked into the Sol dimension, where they work as bounty hunters (This one’s alright actually because it explains they absence and gives the pretty lacking Sol Dimension a larger cast to work with, but otherwise I don’t care for it and just want these dudes back in the games or comics or anything)
- Mecha Sonic wasn’t completely destroyed in Sonic 3 and Knuckles. Realising his extensive combat knowledge however, Eggman put him in charge of Badnik production, which is why the Egg pawns and other enemies are so variable (I stole this, why the fuck did I think this was good? “Extensive combat knowledge” what because he pilots two old Eggman vehicles and then on foot he’s Silver Sonic but again and also gets a super form? That last part might be fairly convincing actually. But even then why Badnik production? I hate this one)
- Justin Beaver and Dave the Intern are related (Stolen, I’ve never really cared about Boom so)
- One day Silver will secure a good future, and will grow up to be somewhat of a pacifist because of it. Despite this, the efforts he went through and the foes he faced have resulted in him becoming the strongest being in the Sonic universe (How would Silver of all characters, who’s only ever lived a life that necessitates fighting, ever be a pacifist? Weird. I still sorta like the idea of him being the strongest though because like, he seems like he should be the most powerful on paper, he’s just not in enough things to really have any feats)
- Boom Knuckles is a master chef (This might be mine, I think this comes from that same train of thought that thinks that Big being randomly proficient at stuff is funny, so hey let’s give Boom Knuckles something like that too so people reading this headcanon page don’t think I’m biased, that’s probably what I was thinking)
- Sonic isn’t “scared” of water, he just dislikes being in deep water, and couldn’t swim, until Colours anyway. He still hates being in deep water, even if he can swim (Honestly I think this just exists to gary stu Sonic and make him even better, but then he never seems to fear water in gameplay so maybe this isn’t wrong?)
- Vector always follows hunches in missions, and they’ve never been wrong so far. Charmy always ends up accusing someone with little evidence, and has also never been wrong (I think I just liked the idea of the Chaotix being this sitcom-esque detective bunch that can say random nonsense and have it work out correctly every time, so I guess this is fine)
- When Gerald was creating Shadow, he based him off of the mural in Hidden Palace zone, Shadow changed colours when the Black Arms DNA was integrated into him. This same mural also made Gerald suspicious of his grandson, Ivo, which is why he he never mentions him. Ivo never knew this (Shadow being based off of Hidden Palace mural is pretty canon iirc, the rest I stole, anyway I’m not really into this because said mural would be very up to interpretation in-universe so it seems weird to me that Gerald would read into it as something that condems Eggman)
- Tails created Omochao, and he highly regrets it (This is pretty funny tbf, I think it’s mine?)
- Cream has a childish crush on Tails (I think I just saw cute fanart of these two and decided this was cute enough to be a headcanon tbh, less into it now because I don’t care for Sonic ships, like I never really did but I think back then I was more involved with the fandom so felt compelled to act a bit more interested in shipping)
- The spiked knuckles on Knuckles is actually a genetic mutation. This is special in the way that every single male echidna in the Knuckles clan had this mutation (Definitely stole this but I think it’s canon anyway so whatevs, like it’s not explicitly a mutation in canon but I think every male echidna model in Adventure has the spiked knuckles so this is good enough)
- Tails often takes apart gadgets he might find lying around, and then reassembles them. They often end up far superior to how they were prior, much to the surprise of the gadget’s owners (Stolen, I guess this is cute)
- Sonic’s world was created by a being known as Gaia. Gaia created the Chaos Emeralds and all life and then observed the world from there. After witnessing the destructive power of the Chaos Emeralds, Gaia created the Master Emerald to balance them, and the Master Emerald itself had infinite energy. This forced Gaia into two beings, Light Gaia and Dark Gaia. Light Gaia assigned the Chao to be the guardians of the Chaos Emerald and the Master Emerald. One of the chao, a neutral Chaos chao, was mutated by Dark Gaia into the being we know as Chaos (As crazy as this sounds, I’m pretty sure this one actually is completely mine. Why did I want a Sonic universe creation story? I have no idea. Chaos being a mutated chao is canon though iirc)
- Sticks saved (Boom) Sonic’s life once, which is how they came to be friends (Might be stolen but why do I put Boom Sonic through so much torture)
- Every living being in Sonic’s world has “Chaos Energy” inside of them (This is another “I want this world to have developed mechanics” headcanon, I think it’s pretty whatever but I’m not not for it)
- Hedgehogs are endangered in Sonic’s world, even more so than echidnas (So I mean tbf, we’ve seen more total echidnas in game canon than Hedgehogs - the former comprising the entire Knuckles clan as well as whatever the group from Chronicles were called if you want to count them - whereas hedgehogs is just Sonic, Amy, Shadow who’s a bio-engineered life form, and Silver who’s from 200 years in the future. But at the same time we have word of god for Knuckles being the last echidna and word of god that Silver’s not descended from any characters we know, ergo other hedgehogs exist. Really this might just be another “let’s gary stu Sonic” thing by making him part of the most endangered species)
- Big is an orphan (Why did I want this for the poor bastard, that seems a bit mean spirited. Maybe you could argue “oh but he grew up in the jungle with his only friend being a frog” though so I suppose that’s a fair argument, but then like no Sonic characters have on screen parents except Cream so why not just have them all be orphans? See that’s dumb)
- Lah, the ghost girl from Night of the Werehog, was a Spagonian photographer obsessed with all things horror. She died when she was legitimately attacked by a lycanthrope. She doesn’t have a problem with this fact (Absolutely stole “Spagonian photographer” but the rest is maybe original? Lah’s really cute though and I like her so if she’s a monster fucker then that’s based)
- Rouge is an Ultimate Mom Friend™ (WOW you can tell how old these are from this alone, huh?)
- Doctor Eggman and Sonic do indeed share the same birthday. Eggman sets up a party for himself and has his robots sing for him, but he never feels… content. At the end of the day however, Sonic always shows up with a cake, eager to see how his old nemesis is doing. Eggman started to really like this, and although he’d never show it, he sometimes worries that Sonic might not show up (Inspired by a fancomic or something, but seems kinda pointless, and I don’t know if I’m okay with game Sonic being so outright genuinely friendly to Eggman and likewise him being reciprocative of it)
- SegaSonic the Hedgehog is chronologically the first game in the timeline. Sonic was kidnapped due to his unnatural speed, Mighty was kidnapped due to his unnatural strength, and Ray was kidnapped for trying to defend Mighty. This also makes Mighty and Ray Sonic’s oldest friends (Think this was just me trying to wank off Mighty by making him Sonic’s oldest friend tbh, don’t really care about this one)
- (Follow up to previous headcanon) Following the events of SegaSonic the Hedgehog, Mighty and Ray were separated. They continued looking for each other for months, and around this time, Mighty joined the Chaotix, in hopes of finding Ray. He eventually did, and they’ve been travelling the world ever since (God all of these were from before Mania Plus got announced even, wow. Why did they get separated? Who knows. But hey I like the idea of them travelling together and I guess I wanted a solid excuse to have to have Mighty be in Knuckles’ Chaotix so that’s what that was about, lame headcanon though tbh)
- (Yet again, a follow up to the previous headcanons) Mighty never informed the Chaotix of his departure with Ray, he wanted to of course, but it escaped his mind in his happiness. Vector put up the missing posters of them in City Escape, hoping to find out what happened (Imagine the complete idiot ball moment that is MIghty never telling the Chaotix he found Ray? This one’s stupid as hell, I think I just liked the idea of Vector putting up those missing posters)
- (Post SGW Archie) Both Cassia and Clove have developed anxiety. Clove due to the condition of her sister, and Cassia due to worrying that her sister is stressing too much and overworking herself (This one is from a time when I definitely didn’t know enough about anxiety to where I should have had headcanons like this tbh, so honestly this one’s sorta just uncomfortable to read)
- Fleetway Sonic sounds literally the exact same as famous British actor Simon Pegg (Think he was just on my mind at the time so this seemed funny)
- In the event that Shadow loses his inhibitor rings, he can call them back at any moment, it doesn’t require any energy to do so (Maybe stolen? Anyway this one doesn’t really do anything for me, just sort of an excuse to have Shadow be able to drop his inhibitor rings and then go fuckin blast shit without having to worry, but does that really need to be its own headcanon?)
- The rings on Silver’s gloves work like channelling rings. They don’t increase or decrease the power of his psychokinesis, but without them, things just get picked up and dropped without Silver’s control (Absolutely stolen, I don’t know what about this I found appealing enough to steal honestly, it’s just sorta boring and would make for a cute fanart piece but nothing more)
- Sonic and Shadow frequently leave presents at people’s doors on Christmas Eve, knocking on the doors and running away afterwards. Neither of them know that the other does it (Fancomic one maybe? I don’t remember for most of these but this one especially. Anyway I hate brooding edgy I hate everything bastard Shadow from recent media but I still think this seems like a bit much for him so I’m not super into it. On Sonic’s end I guess it’s fine, but idk it almost seems excessively altruistic and I’m not really sure if Sonic is this nice)
- Blaze is an incredible ballet dancer, but doesn’t think so herself (Honestly? I’ve got absolutely nothing for this one, I don’t know if it’s mine or not and I don’t know why I cared either way)
- Nack the Weasel chose “Fang the Sniper” as his alias in an effort to seem more intimidating. Unfortunately for him, his real name was very quickly exposed, so he just stuck with that instead (I think this one might actually be mine, so that’s cool. Honestly down with this though, it’s funny and any characterisation for a character as minor as Fang is appreciated in my mind)
- Blaze has some form of social anxiety (Again with Cassia and Clove thing, I probably shouldn’t have been writing these ones)
- Big has never experienced physical pain (This is just a “haha funny Big the Cat meme” headcanon, I kinda hate it now, but then I think it’s based off of Big doing those bellyflops in Heroes and being unaffected, so at least canon somewhat supports it)
- Blaze loves tea (I think this is again from a Sonic Channel wallpaper image? I don’t know. She had tea in IDW at one point though so this is almost canon now, imagine that)
- Chip has no sense of taste, everything is just inexplicably delicious to him (I think this isn’t canon because you can feed him loads of different foods in 360/PS3 Unleashed and I don’t imagine he likes every single one of them)
-  Amy is the only person capable of lifting the Piko Piko Hammer (Funny Mjolnir thing but Fighers and Advance 3 plus maybe others contradict this)
- Shadow loves reading newspapers (Maybe stolen? Boomer Shadow isn’t even that funny)
- Fleetway Knuckles has an incredibly thick Scottish accent (Why did I think this was even funny or entertaining in any way? I guess it’s giving my own country some Sonic rep which isn’t bad but like, idk. Maybe I just decided that the Anti Knuckles from Archie that appears in like one issue should be paid tribute to by having Fleetway Knuckles borrow his accent, even though Fleetway Knuckles came first I’m pretty sure)
- The planet Earth in Sonic Unleashed is the canonical planet that Sonic and friends live on. There are also several islands on the planet that were unseen in Unleashed, such as Christmas, Westside, South and Angel Island (Fuck the two worlds thing, this is still what I want my Sonic world to be)
- Mighty and Ray have like a jillion selfies around the world together (Sorta just cute but I think I’m more into them travelling so minimally now that they don’t even have phones)
- Mighty and Ray both have their post reboot Archie designs as their modern designs in universe (I’m completely down with this, I want them to be in the modern games too)
- Blaze and Silver both catch colds really easily (I suppose Silver comes from a future where colds wouldn’t be common so he’d be even less resistant to them than the average person, and I guess for Blaze I just like the idea of the pyromancer getting colds. Sure, this headcanon’s fine actually)
- Those little Sonic Channel Comics for the 25th anniversary? All of those happened canonically (Hard agree, these were great)
- Vanilla worked in a nursery at some point (God was the Chao Garden thing not enough? Why couldn’t I come up with more interesting characterisation for Vanilla than just “motherly figure”)
- The GUN Commander in Shadow the Hedgehog is indeed called Abraham Tower (This isn’t really a headcanon, it’s just applying an Archie thing to game canon because there’s nothing contradicting it. Anyway I suppose I’m down with this but I still usually call him “the GUN commander from Shadow” so clearly I don’t care that much)
- Espio is a total weeb (Stolen from any and every Espio fancomic, fanart, just whatever. Don’t care for this one, it’s more trashy and cliche than funny)
- Blaze absolutely hates any type of party (Basically canon? She’s introverted so I don’t imagine she’d be into parties)
- By contrast, Silver loves parties (How come those SegaSonic headcanons had a “following on from the last headcanon” thing but these don’t? Anyway I’m meh on this, Silver doesn’t seem that great at interacting with people either tbh)
- Silver is just very extroverted, and it tends to annoy Blaze. She always has to transform into Mom Friend™ just to keep him out of trouble (Another Mom Friend™ one, huh? These last 3 could’ve been one headcanon, whatever, they sorta stink anyway)
- Silver and Blaze probably have a crush on each other, but neither has realised the other’s affection (I think Silvaze was just my favourite Sonic ship because I guess they looked like they went best together in mind, of course in reality they don’t actually have very much chemistry in any of the media and just get thrust together anyway because ???)
- Sonic remembered what Caliburn looked like to the exact details, and had a real blacksmith create a replica. The sword is kept in his house from the headcanon mentioned hundreds of headcanons ago (Woah continuity, wild. I'm mixed on this one though, it seems like something Sonic would go to the extra effort of doing maybe, but then would he really be so sentimental when he can just remember Caliburn in his heart? Like in Chip’s case the bracelet was basically given to him so sentimentality there makes sense, but that extra step for a Caliburn replica doesn’t really seem necessary tbh)
- Honey’s role in the main universe is the same as her role in the Archie comics - that being head and founder of Honey Clothing (I mean yeah sure whatever, this one’s fine)
- Ken Penders is Knuckles’ real father (It’s funny because it’s funny, haha! Yeah idk either)
And that’s us.

266. Sonic Universe #1
Tumblr media
The Shadow Saga (Part 1 of 4): Living Weapons
Writer: Ian Flynn Pencils: Tracy Yardley! Colors: Jason Jensen
We've finally arrived at the comic's most long-standing sister series, Sonic Universe! Like its predecessor KtE, SU ran in arcs of several issues, though the arcs were made up of four issues at a time instead of three, and largely focused on side stories that ran at the same time as the main plotline, usually following the adventures of characters other than Sonic. This allows us to get a greater insight into what the expanded cast of the comics is up to without taking the focus of the main comic's plot away from its titular hero. If we're being honest, some of my favorite stories from this era were contained within SU, as I'm very attached to a lot of the secondary characters of this universe and only following Sonic tends to get boring after a while (one of the reasons I actually liked KtE). As the name implies, this first arc focuses mostly on Shadow. I will note before we get started that since the issues of SU were released alongside those of StH, one per month, the stories of SU often end up intersecting with the main plot. Most of SU's arcs can be read in full four-issue chunks without interruption, but I've deliberately split this one into a couple parts based on context clues about how exactly it intersects with StH's next four issues. Thus, we'll be covering the first issue of the Shadow Saga, followed by two issues of the main comic, and then the other three issues of the Shadow Saga before we finally make our way back into the main comic for the 200-issue milestone special.
This issue picks up right where we left off last time, with Shadow teleporting himself and Metal Sonic away from Moebius to a new zone, though there's a bit of a twist. See, the other sister series I haven't been covering (but might in the future, depending on a couple different factors) is the comic's continuation of the Sonic X anime, which ran for forty issues, with the final one being released just before this one. I haven't covered it because technically it's an entirely separate canon from the preboot, with the only point of intersection being its final issue, when Shadow initially ends up teleporting himself and Metal Sonic to… you guessed it, the Sonic X zone. That issue ends with them teleporting away once again, which lands them here, in the Sol Dimension, hovering above the waters of a vast ocean. Shadow tries to get Metal to stop fighting for a second, reasoning that he's a living weapon that can think for itself and therefore should reject working for Eggman, but Metal doesn't listen, instead calculating that Shadow's rocket shoes are all that's allowing him to hover and that he likely has very little swimming ability. So naturally, it shoves him down into the water and zooms off in search of this zone's equivalent of Eggman.
Tumblr media
I have no idea if the implication here really was meant to be that Shadow is bad at swimming, or if Metal was just mistaken and Shadow deliberately only surfaced after it had left, but either way, Shadow is taken aboard Marine's boat, where he explains why he's here to Blaze. Blaze, recognizing him as being from Sonic's world, explains that he's ended up in her own dimension, and all the while an excited Marine, her Australian accent out in full force, continually tries to interrupt and do some explaining of her own. Shadow irritably suggests she captain the boat back toward the nearest port, which she promptly does, wanting to show off her captaining skills, while Shadow and Blaze continue to talk. This gives Blaze the opportunity to explain to Shadow - and therefore, us - exactly what happened in the offscreen "adaptions" of Sonic Rush and Sonic Rush Adventure that Ian never showed the full picture of. Interestingly enough, it seems that the entirety of the former basically didn't take place at all, with Sonic's relationship with Blaze being entirely centered around the events of the latter. Apparently, Blaze's problems began when the Sol Emeralds she was sworn to protect went mysterious missing, and she began having dreams about Sonic and Eggman. She ended up finding her way to the Cosmic Interstate and into Mobius, where she had her first, very hostile encounter with Sonic. From there, she evidently went immediately back to her own dimension, and not long after Sonic and Tails somehow ended up there after a freak storm (which is interesting in itself, considering the equivalent events of the games are implied to have taken place at least several months apart). Marine found them, as well as the green Chaos Emerald, and when the robot pirate Johnny stole it they enlisted Blaze's help to chase him from island to island, hoping to get the gem back.
Tumblr media
Thanks for your entirely-factually-sound addition to that story, Marine! I love that she includes the detail of Blaze apparently having a giant friend crush on her. Soon enough, the boat pulls into the nearest harbor, while Shadow muses that if they still have the Chaos Emerald, his mission - to breach the Special Zone and retrieve one - may not be a total bust after all. However, it becomes apparent as they dock that the island they've arrived at is cloaked in a layer of ominous smoke. They quickly disembark to find that Metal has already reached the island, setting several buildings ablaze and grabbing random terrified citizens to question them on their version of Eggman's whereabouts.
Tumblr media
Blaze in the preboot is actually significantly more prone to outbursts of anger and violence compared to her relatively more composed and calm counterpart within the games, something which I actually appreciate. She's knocked aside by Metal, and Shadow joins the fray, trying to once again teleport the two away to help protect Blaze's world, but is thrown aside before he can complete a Chaos Control. Marine jumps in next, grabbing onto Metal's head and whooping and throwing some very Australian insults at it while it tries to shake her off, and Shadow can't get a proper shot in for fear of hitting her. Finally Metal manages to throw her off, and Blaze runs over to check on her while Shadow once again confronts Metal about its purpose in life.
Tumblr media
I like this. It makes total sense that Shadow would see a part of himself in someone like Metal, given their somewhat-comparable backstories. I suppose it makes more sense in this context as well, given that the events of Heroes never really happened here and thus no recent instance of Metal Sonic has ever rebelled against its creator. Metal processes Shadow's words for a second, and then replies that as Shadow currently considers protecting Mobius and its inhabitants his own purpose, they're still both just living weapons, weapons with conflicting purposes. Shadow regretfully calls on Blaze to attack with her fire, then he spindashes Metal into the air, where Marine, having rushed back to her ship, deals the killing blow with a shot from her cannons. The three then get busy with helping put out the fires around the village, and when Marine won't shut up about how badass the fight was, Shadow irritably reminds her that Metal was the only hope he had of getting back to Mobius in the first place, and then makes a request that leads into one of the most hilariously famous series of panels in the entire preboot.
Tumblr media
That grumpy frown. I adore it. Blaze steps in to vouch for Marine, considering she's like, literally six, and then offers Shadow the Chaos Emerald, saying that with its help she's found enough of the Sol Emeralds that she won't need it anymore to find the rest. Shadow thanks her, and they part on good terms, with Shadow performing one last Chaos Control to send himself back to his home dimension.
Tumblr media
Hey, Hope, good to see you! I'm still a bit sad that she feels she can't go back to the Mobians, but at least she seems to be doing well for herself, working as an engineer for GUN. Shadow reports to Tower that his mission was technically successful, even though he didn’t manage to breach into the Special Zone like they'd planned. Hope is happy that even though her transporter didn't work as expected Shadow still succeeded in retrieving an emerald, and Tower informs Shadow to get ready, as he's already being assigned another mission which will begin that night. Of course, we won't be seeing it for a couple of days, since as mentioned before we're taking a quick detour back to the main comic for now.

I saw your tag about you okami and bnha au and would you mind telling the details? I saw the post and my heart skipped a beat, I just love them both so much!!
Oh!!!! You’re interested?? I can totally talk about it!! I don’t have to many details flushed out for it but I had two different ideas for it, so I’ll run through them both!
This is going to be pretty long so strap in
Idea #1: They’re different brush gods, all forced to work together to try and stop the world from being consumed by darkness (that sounds like kingdom hearts), or, as I lovingly described it to my friend, “1 person learning all the brush techniques? No. It’s a conglomerate of brush bastards working together to save the world“
None of them are capable of learning any of the other brush techniques, they’ve been apart for far too long, and so instead, they have to band together. It’s a lot of team building and learning how they can make their powers work together to solve puzzles and make it through the dangerous terrains they’re traversing. Certain ones are more combat oriented, and thus, are usually the ones to take on whatever demons might approach them.
Brush god assignments and idea number two under the cut
For all of them, their divine markings are present on their bodies exactly where they would be on their animal forms, and in similar fashion to the Oina, they all have a mask of their respective animal. All of them have a calligraphy brush they can materialize to use their respective brush technique should it be necessary.
Amaterasu - Izuku - He only has sunrise, however he’s also set up with a reflector, Divine Retribution, just like Ammy is. Flowers follow him when he walks, and though sunrise isn’t good in combat on its own, he does know how to use it to his advantage.
Yomigami - Momo - If anyone is going to be rejuvenation, it’s Momo. She can fix anything that has been broken, repair anything. Four orbs circle around her at all times, purple, green, red, and yellow in color, and a thick scroll is rolled up and tucked away at her side.
Tachigami - Tenya - While he’d also be a good fit for Kazegami, bc horses and fast and all that, I kind of just wanted to give him a giant sword. There’s not much in depth reasoning for this other than the guy who wanted to commit a murder for revenge deserves a giant sword. He keeps a sheath at his side for seemingly a normal sized sword, and upon pulling the blade out, it becomes more buster sword sized. The tip of the blade is inked like the calligraphy brushes, allowing him to perform proper power slashes alongside utilizing the strength and sharpness of the blade itself.
Hanagami - ???, Tsuyu, Hanta - I am genuinely at a loss about who should represent bloom, however I do have lily pad and vine down. Now, I know Shiozaki would be an incredible match for vine for obvious reasons, instead I went with Hanta, as his tape translates nicely into vines, and he deserves more love. Tsu should be fairly obvious, frogs and lilypads, so it just made sense to make her the lilypad brush god. Each of the three, whoever their missing link is, has an instrument on them at all times. Tsu has a shinobue, and Hanta a pair of cymbals.
Bakugami (this one should be obvious) - Katsuki - Again, this should be obvious. The god with cherry bombs? Only fitting for this explosive boy. He can roll around on a giant cherry bomb, should he so choose, and his mask has a pair of proper tusks sticking out of it, although it’s usually not on his face, rather settled in his hair.
Yumigami - Fumikage - Considering Dark Shadow, it only made sense to make him the god of the moon. Carried with him is a giant mochi mallet, and though he’s not the best equipped for combat, he’s resourceful, and his ability to control the night is vital.
Nuregami - ??? - I was at a complete loss for this one. If anyone has any suggestions for her, a snake and goddess of water, please tell me!
Kazegami - Inasa - This one was a perfect match, considering Inasa’s quirk being wind. He keeps a battle fan with him, and can control the winds to his every whim. A gentle gust follows him wherever he goes.
Moegami/Itegami - Shouto - No one knows how this boy got two brush techniques, least of all him, but he bears the power of the ox and the power of the phoenix. He wears the ox mask out of personal preference, but he does have the phoenix mask with him. Though a split design would be optimal, I struggle to think of how this would work. Unlike the others, he does get an animal asset, in the form of massive, flaming, red and white wings. However they’re not always around, only manifesting in a blaze when he needs them, or is utilizing inferno. He has a smoking pipe he doesn’t often use and conch horn on him, attached to his waist by a light blue and white belt. His ice is at it’s full power upon him joining up with the others, but his fire is weakened, requiring him to have another source to derive it from, until Izuku gives him the push he needs to get it back.
Kasugami - ??? - Midnight’s quirk would be perfect for this, but on account of me trying to limit it to the children, I have no other ideas.
Kabegami - Ochako - The ability to defy gravity and walk up walls? A perfect fit for her. While most useful for navigating around, it would be impossible for the others to get to where they need to go without her catwalk ability. Like Shouto, she has a cat feature, a long fluffy tail, which serves as her brush and as a means of helping her to balance.
Gekigami - Denki - With a set of lighting arrows in a quiver at his back and a bow always on hand, he can strike that which he sees fit. One of the most dangerous and combat oriented abilities, he has infinite electrical energy for as much as he has ink, which allows for dangerous lightning storms. His lightning arrows are as infinite as his ink, and when equipped with his tiger mask, he’s rather intimidating. He has the most celestial markings of any of them, running in stripes along his skin.
That’s all I’ve got right now, mostly just ideas and character designs, but I think for the most part this would follow the canon plot, just with them travelling in a group rather than all together as Ammy.
Idea #2 is a bit different, and a bit more true to Okami form. Or, rather, Okamiden, as Izuku fills in as Chibiterasu.
All I really have is everyone’s species and like, general backstory, if I know it.
Inko - Sun goddess. Amaterasu equivalent. Origin of all that is good. She’s done her time, she’s served the people, and she’s fixed the celestial plane. She. Is. Tired. All she wants is a break, and she decides the best way to get that is to head to earth once things are fixed and settle down by Kamiki, where she has her son. She sells her artwork, often with help from Izuku.
Izuku - Baby god. Chibi equivalent. He grew up in a small house in Shinshu field near but not close to Kamiki village. He found Katsuki when he was younger and the two have stuck near each other since. He has no idea what his godly status actually means, but his mom has worked with him since he was little on practicing his brush strokes, even if he can’t use them yet. Unlike his mother’s ink, he’s uses charcoal, still a child in terms of powers, though a teen in body.
Shouto - Oina, lost to Yoshpet when he was a child. He survived the treacherous cold and winding paths of the forest, and though he could ask the citizens of Ponc’Tan to escort him out, he isn’t inclined to leave. He spends much of his time in the clearing Ponc’Tan is in, though, and often hangs out with Hanta and Denki. His dog form is a red husky, and his mask is a phoenix.
Katsuki - Oina, however much like Shouto, he doesn’t live with the tribe. He left fairly young, escaping through the path to Shinshu field, where he found Izuku. He attached himself to him, convinced that Izuku would get himself killed if he wasn’t around. He is unaware of Izuku’s godly status. He’s always in dog form, so Izuku isn’t aware that his dog isn’t merely a dog. He and Shouto were close when they were kids.He wears no mask, having thrown it aside upon leaving the tribe.
Ochako- Sparrow clan. Used to only meeting those of the purest hearts but also all too familiar with financial hardships as a result, as her family hardly makes enough to even keep the inn open with their limited visitors. She recently left the inn in search of something to help keep her family better off.
Tsuyu - Dragonian.
Mina - Dragonian.
Hanta - Poncle. One of Shouto’s closest friends, and the one that initially found him in Yoshpet. He wanted to bring him back to the tribe when he recovered, but he refused, and so instead, he often spends any time he’s not within Ponc’tan busy with lessons with Shouto.
Denki - Poncle. Another of Shouto’s closest friends. He takes his art training very seriously, but when it’s him, Hanta, and Shouto, the three of them tend to get up to quite a bit of mischief. They often tag along on Shouto through the forest, knowing that he can get them back to Ponc’tan with minimal effort with how well he knows the forest.
Eijirou - Human.
Hitoshi - Moon Tribe.
Tenya - Human.
Fumikage - Sparrow clan.
Mashirao - Oina.
Yuuga - Moon Tribe.
Kyouka - Human.
Momo - Human.
Neito - Oina.
Getting things all figured out for this idea takes a fair bit more work and since I haven’t talked it through much, it never got very far. So that’s about everything I have. I adore this au, both parts of it, so if anyone has any ideas feel free to send in asks or ideas! I’d love to hear your thoughts.
And I hope this is kind of what you wanted anon! If not, well, please tell me!!

Personally, I think Cream the Rabbit is currently the one character out of the entire Sonic cast of characters that I feel was never needed.
Why do I come to that conclussion?
For starters, Cream was introduced with the idea of being Amy's equivalent to Sonic's Tails. However, an aspect that the people at Sonic Team did not take into account is that while Sonic and Tails are very different characters from each other than on top, not only complement each other but also hightlight each others positives, this was never the case with Amy and Cream.
The problem is not just that both Amy and Cream are very similar characters (both are sweet innocent girls) which by itself alone causes a situation where they overlap and in order to make one shine by being sweet and compassionate, the other has to take a dive... Guess which of the two took said dive and had her character be flanderized in the 2000's by playing out the other notable aspect that was left?
No, the other problem is that their dynamic does anything but highlight what makes each other special. Amy Rose is a very quirky and entertaining character who makes Cream look like a dull and one-dimensional charicature while on the other hand, Cream's impossibly nice politeness causes for Amy to be seen as selfish and pushy in comparisson. Definitively nothing like what happens with Sonic and Tails.
Cream was introduced to the series to work as a support character for a support character (Amy), yet I feel the idea was poorly executed not because of just the usual clumsyness from Sonic Team, but rather because the idea was flawed from the very beginning. It says a lot whe Cream, who was created to be Amy's BFF, then changes her for a cat princess who hails from Austral... I mean, the Sol dimension.
OK, it's been established why Cream as a character had a very poor execution, but why was she never needed?
A) IMO, any series that hopes to strike a nice balance between the members of it's cast needs to make them unique from each other so that they can all shine in their very own right and not overlap each other. Amy's contribution to the franchise is that she is the one character with the strongest compassion and empathy for others. How can Amy possibly go back to being the sweet kid from SA1 (or even Mania Adventures #6) if we're adding another character who also does the same thing? It's either one or the other and I don't think it's fair that Amy has to share (and be reduced to fangirl again) so Cream can shine when all the other major characters get to keep the thing that makes them unique to themselves. I don't think anyone would be happy if ST introduced a younger, cuter and smarter new character to eclipse Tails on his very own game. There is a reason why you never get two Han Solos in the Millenium Falcon.
B) If what they needed was a character who could keep in check Amy's more impulsive side by offering advise, why not use Tails instead? I think Amy would be more willing to listen to the one character that also advises Sonic over some little girl that's half her own age. Plus we get the bonus benefit of Amy being more involved with the main cast... as it should had been from the start. The only thing we got with Cream is to create more distance between Amy and the other characters.
C) If they wanted for Amy to have a BFF, then why not Blaze? In fact, with Amy and Blaze we actually get a dynamic between two characters with personalities that is not only actually different (Amy is bubbly, cheerful and optimistic while Blaze is serious, reserved and realistic) but which also complements for each other's in a way that highlights what makes them endearing characters (Amy can see in Blaze the kind of strong heroine that she aims to become one day, while in Amy, Blaze learns to see the best of any situation as well as to be more compassionate in how she exacts justice). Plus there is the twist the while in Sonic and Tail's duo the blue hedgehog is the oldest, here it's the pink hedgehogette who is the youngest  in her duo, a thing that IMO is more original than just trying to be "Sonic and Tails in girl form".
But if you want a short, more direct answer, then I would say the following: whatever Cream could add to the franchise was either better done by characters introduced before her, or can now be done much better by other more complex characters. Even the whole young child thing can be better pulled off by Charmy Bee and in a more entertaining manner.
Just like how I dislike when characters are given crap for very poor reasons/arguments that don't have a solid foundation, it annoys me when the very exact opposite thing is done for characters who show that they really don't have the potential to stand on their very own merit. Personally, I think Cream is this kind of character that hardly contributes anything meaningful at all. Not even when she actually does get the spolight, which often consists on a watered down version of what Amy did before.
Why exactly do people want Cream to return for? As a character, her strongest point is having one of the most cute designs, but to mee, looks aren't everything. Her personality is pretty basic. Worse, she's one of those type of idealized characters void from any form of flaws. As far as I know, Cream doesn't even have a purpose or goal to drive her character. Sonic likes Adventures, Eggman wants to conquer the world to build the largest amusement park and have it all for himself alone. Tails wants to be as cool as Sonic, Amy wants to win Sonic's affection and respecc, Knuckles wants YOU off his lawn, Rougue wants all them gems in the world, Vector wants to be a famous detective and make lots of money, Big wants to go fishing with Froggy for ever and ever, etc. All of them have something they want or like to do more than anything, no matter how ambitious, mundane or plain ridiculous. All of them, except Cream.
The things I feel Sonic Team really need to think before throwing a half-baked character should be the following:
What is the character's motivation/purpose?
What unique thing is this character going to add/contribute to the existing cast?
Does it overlap and/or take away from existing characters in any way?
And because I like to at least add some constructive criticism, these are the things that Cream needs to have fixed:
* Don't make her Amy 2.0. I can't stress enough how this is a disservice to both Amy (taking away from her character) and Cream (not being allowed to be her own unique thing)
* Don't make her an idealized perfect little princess with no flaws, as that is no character in any way, shape or form. Give Cream actual flaws with clear consequences that can be felt as well as offer an opportunity to grow. You can't win me over if I cannot perceive the character as credible and relatable. To me, this are the two most important things and why it's Amy and Eggman who are my two all-time favorites, since both of them feel "real" in their own unique way because they give a reason to become invested and care for what happens to them. A flaw I can think off is that Cream does not understand things that are normal to grown ups and which to her might come as contradictory, like for example, why sometimes it's better to say a lie than a truth that will hurt others. At six years old, Cream is supposed to be learning and trying to understand her world and how people interact, not giving moral lessons that require having the experience of living to understand them.
As she is now, Cream is not needed. However, I could change my perception of the character, even be more accepting, if Cream was changed from "discount Amy" into something unique... something that actually plays her young age in a credible manner, who pursues a goal and struggles to overcome obstacles being driven by that goal.
They got her design. That's like 50% of the character done right. It's only the personality and how her interaction dynamics are played that needs a major overhaul.

Reasons why LOONA and Sonic The Hedgehog exist together
LOONA exist on the Mobius Strip; STH characters call their world 'Mobius'
LOONA has the sub-unit 'Odd Eye Circle', consisting of three members who all sing Chaotic; STH has Team Chaotix, also made up of three members
SA2 implies that there are multiple dimensions (as Sonic and Blaze inhabit different dimensions); LOONA's sub-units each have their own layer of reality
You could argue that the Chaos Emeralds are the equivalent to yyxy's fruits in that it provides powers to users with specific qualities
Sonic just... gotta go fast; LOONA had to run in Hi High to fulfil their purpose (whatever that is), as well as 1/3 in Love&Live
I'm not saying that LOONA's animals are what their sonicsonas would be but
Uh shit what else
I mean, Sonic characters are often closely associated with their colour scheme; LOONA members have their own signature colours
But if Team Chaotix are OEC, then who's flying the plane who is everyone else?
This may be the hottest take on this side of the Mobius Strip but I feel like Team Sonic (Sonic, Tails and Knuckles) + Amy would be yyxy.
This would, unfortunately, most likely place Amy in the role of Chuu however, negating the inherent gayness of Heart Attack. Unless I have a love interest for her wake her up or something (but I'm not creating an OC I sWEAR)
Naturally Sonic would be Yves: a natural leader who says 'fuck cops' and lives his life. This would put Tails as Go Won, whom I interpret as having a mentor/mentee and/or sibling-like relationship to Yves (Sonic)
Thus Knuckles becomes Olivia Hye.
Hye.... more like w'hye' am I doing this, am I right?
As a guarded person, Knuckles struggles to connect to the other three (except maybe Tails, who in this interpretation, also has a sibling-like relationship to Knuckles, albeit reluctant), who in turn fail to fully trust him when they escape Eden, ruled by... Dr Eggman.
But then who would the ViVi to Sonic's Yves be... hmmm...
Is there perchance... a shy, quiet member of the STH world... somewhat immortal due to not being entirely human (or like the others, at least)... mayhaps with memory issues... who seems to act as Sonic's equal...
If you guessed Omega, you're right! So-
Oh wait, it's Shadow. Oh. Oh my- I literally just made a Sonadow LOONA AU
Well, I've set the pile on fire, might as well make sure it all burns.
Hope B#RN comes out soon. Anyway
So for the other 4 members, I'm a bit loose with the placements.
If you haven't watched the Colour Theory video on YouTube, I'd recommend it.
A basic part of it is that each member has a parallel member, and honestly?
I feel like Rouge should be Heejin if it would put her at odds with Knuckles
But then she'd be singing duets with one of the other three and idk, she doesn't really interact with them much so it doesn't work in that regard.
Blaze and Silver could probably rock the 2jin team, which, again, would remove the gayness from some of the songs. Sorry.
(but if Hyunjin transforms into her fursona, what does Blaze transform into)
So Rouge would be Haseul, I suppose. And Cream is probably Yeojin. Which would add an interesting layer to My Melody, which has been theorized to be about a possessed Haseul tricking Yeojin...
That could work. I guess....
Also if you try to make this about the real-life members/voice actors/singers, I will remove your appendix. Leave them out of this crackshit.
So yeah. This is it.
My shitty, overthought Sonadow LOONA AU.

Mountaineering in Slovenia
The first time I met Slovenian mountaineer Ales Cesen, we were snowshoeing across an ice cap in Iceland, about 2,000 miles from his native country.
It was only October, but winter had come early that year, and the climate was particularly dour, even by local standards. Unhindered by the mist and hail, Cesen made just one noise: a rhythmic slooping sound as his feet dragged along the glacier. Perhaps it was his hiker’s stoicism. Or maybe he was just peeved about the weather.
I’d been in Reykjavik on business when an old friend and seasoned expedition leader, Siggi Bjarni Sveinsson, invited me to explore the country’s southerly expanse of volcanoes and glaciers. I was lured by the promise of new adventures but unprepared to share them with such a veteran climber. I could barely keep up.
We paused when the wind subsided, and Cesen’s wife, Polona, exhumed a plastic package from her rucksack: a bag of hermetically sealed doughnuts, like the ones you find at the gas station that will survive the apocalypse, and we qualified our shared sweet tooth indulgence as “cultural exchange.” Cesen abstained, and as he blazed ahead to explore a fissure forged by the cataclysmic eruption of the volcano Eyjafjallajökull back in 2010, Sveinsson signaled for me to pause. He leaned in and said in his aspirated Icelandic accent: “You know, Ales is—how do you Americans say it? Ah, yes—a ‘big f—ing deal.’ ”
This was 2016. Cesen was on a survey mission in Iceland hoping to understand what sparked the country’s tourism ascendancy and figure out how to replicate it back home. In many ways, the Slovenia of today bears striking similarities to the Iceland of a few years ago: There are vast expanses of uncorrupted nature to explore, freshly farmed meals to enjoy, a population of kind and indomitable souls, and a paucity of visitors.
That’s why Cesen decided to create Midgard Experience, a customised trekking outfit and mountaineering academy for all levels that opened in June. His goal is twofold: first, to devise a series of technical courses that can initiate hikers into the impenetrable-seeming world of alpinism. And second, to turn his native Slovenia into the latest must-visit adventure destination—the next Iceland.
A view of Slovenia’s Julian Alps from Jasna Lake
In Slovenia, Cesen, 36, could best be described as climbing royalty. His father, Tomo Cesen, is an acclaimed mountaineer known for his solo ascents of several perilous peaks in the Alps and Himalayas in the 1980s. The southeasterly passage to the summit of K2—the world’s second-highest mountain and a significantly more difficult climb than Everest—is called the Cesen Route in his honour.
Ales has since become the torchbearer for his family’s shared climbing passion. Polona, also 36, is an accomplished climber in her own right; they’ve even named their eldest son Rok. In 2015, Cesen won a Piolet d’Or—the Academy Awards of alpinism—for completing the first ascent of the north face of Hagshu in the Indian Himalayas with fellow Slovenians Luka Lindic and Marko Prezelj. And, among other honours, the Alpine Association of Slovenia, a conglomeration of 285 smaller climbing and hiking societies, recognised him as mountaineer of the year in 2017.
The next time I see Cesen, it’s one year later to the day. He’s working out the final logistics of his adventure climbing outfit and has invited me to spend some time in Slovenia to give his new alpinism product a trial run. As I touch down amid a sharp crown of peaks near Ljubljana, the country’s capital, I realise that the small international airport is positioned on what must be the country’s only strip of flat terrain. The craggy geography explains the cult of climbing that exists in Slovenia—think of it like California’s branded surfing lifestyle but at 8,000 feet above sea level.
The Alpine Association of Slovenia is the country’s largest nongovernmental organisation. An affiliate of the Olympic team, it has more than 57,000 registered members. That’s roughly 2.9 percent of the nation’s 2 million inhabitants. Each year the association leverages a margin of its profits, and about 29,000 volunteer hours, to maintain 10,000-plus kilometres of trails and a network of 181 bivouacs and mountain shelters. Last year it collected €21 million ($24.4 million) from guided hikes, canteen purchases, and bunk accommodations, not including the taxes and revenue from private enterprises such as Cesen’s.
In his new role as founder and private expedition leader for Midgard Experience, Cesen is an unofficial ambassador for the Julian Alps who’s memorised each crest and crag of the range, similar to the way we intrinsically know every wrinkle and scar on our own bodies. He’s not ebullient by American standards, but he’s warm and welcoming during an introductory hike along the shores of Bled, a glacial lake famed for the spire of the Church of St. Martin that seemingly floats in its middle.
As we stamp our way up to lookout points and hidden waterfalls, I prod for insights about what physical challenges we’ll tackle in the days ahead, but really it’s Cesen who’s sussing me out, gauging my abilities and interests to tailor a mountaineering experience that will push me just far enough outside my comfort zone. At the end of the day, Polona, who came on the hike, insists on a group selfie before popping open the trunk of their Peugeot and unveiling some cultural exchange—a tray of intricate, homemade petits fours, which we inhale.
The next day, Cesen leads me on my first technical climb. He chooses a towering rock face in the nearby Kamnik Alps, a sparsely visited collection of ridges along the Austrian border where he and his alpinist peers ready themselves for Himalayan expeditions. The look of it is daunting for a beginner like me: It’s 8,000 feet high and fully vertical to the naked eye, with teeny ledges to rest your legs spaced 30 feet apart.
With little ado, harnesses are latched, helmets adjusted, and ropes unfurled; then we steadily hoist ourselves from ledge to ledge, inching farther above the Technicolour tree line. Each lift of the leg is a riddle that needs solving. Finding suitable footholds and finger grips in a sheer cliff is like putting together a 5,000-piece jigsaw puzzle.
Cesen leads the way with ease, a loose rope connecting the two of us like a mobile belay—or the mountaineering equivalent of training wheels. Exerting little or no effort at all, he inserts spring-loaded cams into stone crevices to create a system of hooks for our safety ropes. His first lessons come quickly and cover three critical skills: spotting unlikely grooves and fissures in the stone, trusting one’s instincts, and learning to play the mountain like a game of chess. With the latter, I realise that mountaineering is as much a feat of mental endurance as it is physical exertion. You have to appreciate the gravity (literally) of each move while setting yourself up for a successful path ahead. Gradually, Cesen loosens our link, creating distance between us and testing my newfound ability. Slowly and carefully I build a sequence of steps and grips together—a “rock ballet,” as Cesen calls it. And as the ground rapidly peels away from me, I realise this isn’t merely a guided climb, but a master class led by the Daniel Day-Lewis of mountaineering.
We reach our first crest around midday and follow a thin dragon’s tail of stone toward a second, higher peak. By the end of the afternoon we reach the summit, a craggy moonscape freckled by snow puddles and alpine moss. Our reward is an extended overnight break at a small but surprisingly modernist bivouac cabin—it’s almost Scandinavian in style, built from blond wood and geometric panes of weatherproof glass. Inside, five ergonomically designed beds extend from the walls, each lined with a thin, yoga mat-like pad. A weathered journal sits on the table by the door containing the scrawled signatures—Slovenian, mostly—of other tired climbers who’ve overnighted in the hut.
With the warm setting sun still gleaming, we enjoy our packed provisions on the smooth shale outside: creamy farm cheese from a dairy near Bled, homemade prosciutto cured along the Italian border, and morsels of a decadent chocolate cake that (unsurprisingly, by now) Polona had packed for us. Cesen briefly breaks the silence between chews: “I can tell that you belong in nature,” he says. His words, though characteristically succinct, feel like the most gratifying compliment I’ve ever received. Exhausted but beaming with pride, I stare thousands of feet down the valley and take in my accomplishment.
Cesen doing what he does best.
Today, Cesen’s exclusive adventure outfit is fully operational. The private three-day, two-night itineraries are custom-tailored and start at €980 per person including overnight accommodations and instructional guiding. Whether he’s taking guests on advanced ascents along the north face of the Julians, setting on multiday treks through the Valley of Seven Lakes, or practicing rock climbing techniques at the arcing walls of Crni Kal, Cesen imbues each trip with a sincere passion for nature and sport. Intentionally or not, he’s also succeeded at something the travel industry often struggles to achieve: bridging authenticity and adventure.
“Why is it that when it comes to conquering a mountain, most travellers sign up for factory-fare treks like the Kilimanjaro parade or the overcrowded Inca Trail?” I wonder aloud to Cesen, recalling when I visited Machu Picchu and witnessed a zombielike flood of hikers pouring through the legendary ruin’s Sun Gate.
“It’s a bit like faking romance in a brothel,” he replies, deriding the prevailing trend of these so-called checklist climbs. If he’s successful, Cesen says, he’ll supplant travellers’ desires to summit Everest with the gratification of mastering an intimidating (but surprisingly accessible) adventure sport.
Currently, Bled and its sister lake, Bohinj, get the lion’s share of Slovenia’s international traffic—mostly from tourists who trundle through on bus tours and assume the twin lakes are the country’s only drawing card. Holidaying Slovenians, however, take to the Alps, where Cesen’s operation is based. Ascending Triglav, the country’s highest peak, is like joining these locals on a rite of passage; roughly 60,000 nationals overnight in the scatter of mountain huts there each year.
Being an alpinist and being Slovenian are two sides of the same coin. Undoubtedly, this propensity for fitness and nature has played a role in the country’s high standards of living. (Slovenia regularly ranks toward the top of the Global Peace Index.) It certainly explains why Slovenia claims 759 registered professional climbers—the highest number per capita on the global competitive circuit—and 13 of the coveted Piolet d’Ors awarded in the last 26 years.
It turns out that Slovenia, much like Ales, is—how do you say it?—ah, yes, a big f—ing deal.

The Vehicles of Wings of Canon: Planes
As you’ve like noticed, the current arc of The World Without Authors has a lot of focus on aerial dogfighting. As my fellow cowrite Aelit, my beta reader Doctorlit, and most of my readers (so pretty much everyone) aren’t much knowledgeable about fighter jets, I thought this is a good time to add some infos about the planes featured in the story so far.
I will mostly give some background info and add photos of real world examples for context (where applicable), as for the boring technical stats there’s always Wikipedia, that does a better job than I’ll ever do!
MCDONNELL DOUGLAS F-4E PHANTOM II
Tumblr media
An USAF F-4E in the light grey air superiority livery, which as you can see from Chapter 1’s illustrations is actually different from the Strike Dove one. Johnson’s plane was likely mothballed while in this livery, but during Vietnam War service it likely had the SEA green and tan camouflage.
The F-4 Phantom II is an old third generation fighter jet from the Vietnam War era. Designed as an interceptor, it also saw use as a fighter-bomber. More than 5,000 were built in the real world, and it still being used by some countries though mostly in a reconnaissance role. (As it was sort-of-mentioned in the last chapter, Japan still had F-4EJ and RF-4EJs in service as of 2014, and they still have a few F-4EJ now though the last squadron is expected to switch to F-35s soon.)
While not exactly the best in class manoeuvrability-wise, it had an incredible amount of thrust for the time and was heavily armed, being able to carry up to eight missiles or a dozen bombs. Earlier version didn’t feature an internal cannon, but from the F-4E they were equipped with a M61 Vulcan 20mm rotary cannon in the “chin”.
Normally, a F-4 requires a pilot and a Radar Inteception Officer, but Johnson’s F-4E received an avionics upgrade while being restored to combat-ready condition including AIM-120 compatibility (which USAF Phantoms never carried AFAIK but some Greek F-4Es did) which, being an active radar homing missile instead of a semi-active one like the AIM-7 usually carried by the Phantoms, means that the single F-4E converted to Strike Dove specifications is combat-wise a single seat fighter, and as such the rear seat is mostly a passenger seat now. As a former USAF aircraft, its tail code followed their standards with just the alterations needed to denote it being a Strike Dove aircraft now. its full code is DV SD 14 364, which denotes an aircraft stationed at Strike Dove’s headquarters (DV, an abbreviation which AFAIK isn’t used by any USAF air base or carrier), owned by Strike Dove Inc. (SD), commissioned in 2014 (14) and its serial number ending in 364. For practical reasons, though, it is mostly referred as DV 364 or Phantom 364.
As of Chapter 4, it further received modification with parts from its Ace Combat equivalent, allowing it to carry the ridiculous amount of ordinance the series is known for.
NORTHROP F-5F TIGER II
Tumblr media
A F-5F of the Swiss Air Force. While a bit lighter, the livery is very similar to Strike Dove’s one.
The F-5F Tiger II is a light fighter also from the Vietnam War era, though it didn’t serve during that war (earlier variants of the F-5 were deployed there instead) and, in fact, alongside the F-5E single seater version never saw combat with the USAF.
The F variant is the dual seater conversion trainer for the E variant, and as such it features flight controls for both occupants, usually a student pilot in front and an instructor in the back. As Johnson was planning to build up a fleet of F-5Es for Strike Dove, the single F-5F was meant to train new Strike Dove pilots on how to operate Tiger IIs.
All F-5 variants have a fairly limited ordinance carrying capacity, something slightly mitigated by the addition of wingtip rails for AIM-9 missiles in the E and F variants. On top of that, in order to make space for the avionics displaced by the second seat the the F-5F had to sacrifice one of the M39 20mm cannons and most of the ammo storage for the other, leaving it with only 140 rounds (and causing Sergio to run out of ammo in Chapter 2).
Like the Phantom, Strike Dove’s Tiger II received Ace Combat-verse pylons and equipment in Chapter 4 somewhat improving its capabilities, but after the rescue of Nikki and Razgriz Squadron it got relegated to second line as Strike Dove and its allies got hold of better aircraft.
The F-5F in Strike Dove service has tail code DV SD 14 027, usually abbreviated in DV 027.
GRUMMAN F-14A TOMCAT
Tumblr media
A F-14A Tomcat. Even by today’s standards, it is a very sleek aircraft.
The F-14A Tomcat is a carrier-based interceptor fighter designed for the US Navy in the late 60s and early 70s. It had barely entered service by the end of the Vietnam War, with its first aerial kills coming only in later incidents.
The aircraft was in service in the US Navy and is apparently is still in service today in Iran. As the two countries are pretty much sworn enemies now, this led to the fact that all surviving US aircraft are in permanently non-flyable conditions in museums as the US armed forces went through the trouble of shredding everything else related to the aircraft to simply force the Iranians to run out of spare parts for theirs.
Kind of a shame, for such an iconic and good-looking aircraft, but luckily that’s not the case in the Ace Combat universe, where it is built by different manifacturers and is in service with… well, pretty much every single air force in that world really. The most notable users are Wardog Squadron and its successor Razgriz Squadron, pilots from which feature as part of the extended cast of The World Without Authors, and so four Tomcats are with Strike Dove and the Wolfram now: airframes KT 007, KT 024 and KT 221 from Razgriz Squadron (flown by Nagase, Grimm and Snow) and airframe NZ 016 from Wardog Squadron (technically Blaze’s, but now flown by Davenport)
Tomcats are two seater jets, with a pilot in front and a RIO in the back, but the games never mention Wardog or Razgriz RIOs (as, depending on player choice, they could be flying anything between a single seat fighter to a four seat EA-6B Prowler), so I skated the issue by having all of them coming from situations in which it could be acceptable for the rear seat to be unoccupied, even finding a way of filling the plothole of the poor sod in Davenport’s back seat not being mentioned at all during the Journey Home mission.
We can assume that by the time Razgriz Squadron becomes a Strike Dove unit their planes were either fitted with a way to use their weaponry without a RIO, only fitted with ordinance that didn’t require one, or some people from the Wolfram and/or survivors from the Kumaneko were hastly trained to be their RIOs. The Razgriz planes retained their tailcodes, but Davenport’s has been resprayed in Razgriz livery and the tailcode changed into KT 008.
One last note, the F-14 was the main inspiration for the VF-1 Valkyrie from the Macross series, which will likely feature in the future.
LOCKHEED MARTIN F-22A RAPTOR
Tumblr media
An USAF F-22A. In the real world, Raptors are only fielded by the Unites States due to a strict sales ban to protect the aicraft’s classified parts.
The F-22A Raptor is the current air superiority fighter of the USAF. It is the first aircraft of this type to be designed from the ground up as a stealth aircraft, and as such can carry most of its ordinance in internal bays.
Sergio commandeered one for his own use during a PPC mission, which remained in Corolla’s possession after his retirement but, luckily for him, she brought it along during the Unravel. As Strike Dove doesn’t have any other aircraft of this design, the Raptor can be considered to be Sergio’s signature aircraft. Something that already led Belkan pilots to be wary of the “Raptor with the white bird on the tail”.
Sergio’s Raptor came from an Ace Combat badfic, and as such it is already equipped with whatever allows the Ace Combat aircraft to carry dozens of missiles. It was originally fielded in a badfic copy of Heierlark Air Base (called Hierlark Air Base in the fic), and as such carried tailcode HK 032. After the repaint mentioned in Chapter 7, however, it received Strike Dove tailcode DV 001. As it was officially commissioned in Strike Dove after the Unravel, while Strike Dove doesn’t have an actual headquarter and people come from different years, the airbase and year markers were dropped, with DV becoming the identification code for Skystreaker Squadron as a way to pay respect to the Strike Dove personnel lost in the Unravel.
FB-22C SILENT RAPTOR
Tumblr media
Corolla’s FB-22C, still with it old PPC markings.
The FB-22C Silent Raptor is a stealth strike aircraft Corolla made by modyfying a FB-22 Strike Raptor she claimed for herself during the same mission in which Sergio obtained his F-22A.
In the real world, the FB-22 Strike Raptor, a delta-winged derivative of the F-22A proposed for the strike bomber role, never left the drawing board, but it has been produced in limited quantities in the Ace Combat universe. Corolla modified the design by removing the vertical tails and revising the other control surfaces to compensate, sacrificing stability for better speed and stealth. (What did you expect from her, really?) thus obtaining her one-of-a-kind custom she christened the FB-22C Silent Raptor.
Like the regular Raptor, the Silent Raptor carries its ordinance internally, with a bigger main weapons bay than the Raptor (the proposed Strike Raptor was to carry thirty Small Diameter Bombs compared to the Raptor’s eight) and has a distinct advanage in speed and stealth, making it the fastest of the aircraft currently owned by Strike Dove.
The Silent Raptor originally carried the spurious tailcode PACS-0, which in Corolla’s mind was “PPC Air Command Squadron Zero”, but said squadron doesn’t officially exist in PPC records. Upon Corolla’s official switch to Strike Dove the tailcode was replaced with DV 003, reflecting her callsign Skystreaker 3 and leaving an open space in the numeration to allow Ami (Skystreaker 2) to claim DV 002 for her own aircraft in the future.
MITSUBISHI F-15J EAGLE
Tumblr media
A F-15J from the Japan Air Self Defence Force, the sole user of the design
The F-15J is a variant of the McDonnell Douglas F-15C built by Mitsubishi for the JASDF. It is currently Japan’s air superiority fighter.
A F-15J in disrepair and originally slated for scrapping, airframe number 018, was assigned to Nikki during her brief stint as a Spare Squadron pilot. After her rescue, the aircraft was put in storage as DV 018. The tailcode was given only as a way to refer to the particular airframe on the ground, as it was deemed beyond repair by Corolla. The cockpit area is being converted into a simulator, while the rest is being dismantled in the hope some of its parts are still in decent enough condition to be overhauled as spares for the other Eagles in Strike Dove service.
MCDONNELL DOUGLAS F-15S/MTD
Tumblr media
The sole F-15 STOL/MTD, with the engine configuation as featured in the Ace Combat games. The real aircraft was eventually fitted with round 3D thrust vectoring nozzles.
The F-15S/MTD is a development variant of the F-15 Eagle fitted with canards and thrust vectoring nozzles. While only one was built in real life, in the Ace Combat universe the design saw service with the Osean and Belkan air forces. The design never went in full adoption, with fielded examples retaining the instrumentation probe of the test variant.
Having been converted from a conversion trainer F-15B in real life, I’m not sure what the backseaters of the F-15S/MTDs actually do in Ace Combat – the F-15C and J air superiority versions are single seaters, and the F-15S/MTD is more geared towards being an air superiority fighter too. I guess it could be for a Weapon System Officer for strike missions, as the F-15E does have a seat for a WSO in the back. However, most of the functions of a WSO are done by the AWACS aircraft in Ace Combat-style warfare, so I guess the backseat of Strike Dove’s Eagles will be empty more often than not.
It has improved maneverability over the regulat F-15 variants, making it a favourite of several ace squadrons, and also earning Nikki’s appreciation after Strike Dove captured several Belkan Air Force ones.
Strike Dove currently has eleven F-15S/MTDs, but plans are to convert as many of them as possible to F-15J+ Kai Eagle Plus specs. So far, the only one I’ve confirmed the tail code for is the one Ami flew in Chapter 7, DV 005.
F-15J KAI EAGLE PLUS
Tumblr media
A really nicely made scale model of an Eagle Plus.
The F-15J Kai Eagle Plus is a fictional upgrade of the F-15J that featured in Patlabor. With its enlarged control surfaces and F-22A Raptor-style thrust vectoring nozzles, the Eagle Plus looks like an improved S/MTD and I decided to consider it as such. I really like its design, and I decided to use its obscurity as a way to give Strike Dove a distinctive fighter for at least part of the Unravel arc.
Strike Dove currently owns two, captured from a Belkan Air Force base that had in turn captured them somewhere else. One was partially dismantled by the Belkans for study and is being reassembled, while the other has been already pressed into service with tail code DV 006, and is the one Nikki flew in Chapter 7.
Corolla has plans to convert the F-15S/MTDs to Eagle Plus specs, though it won’t be a perfect conversion as the Eagle Plus is a single seater while the S/MTD is a two seater. It is likely that a F-15DJ Kai Eagle Plus conversion trainer existed in the Patlabor universe, but again as I don’t know if the rear seat of the S/MTD had controls in the Ace Combat universe so that might not be a correct designation for it either. I guess I’ll come up with something once the converted planes start rolling out…
SUKHOI SU-47 BERKUT
Tumblr media
The Su-47 demonstrator during an air show.
The Su-47 Berkut is, like the F-15S/MTD, an aircraft built only for development purposed in the real world that has been adapted as a fighter in the Ace Combat games. Known for its distinctive forward-swept wings, as per its fictional depictions it is a very agile aircraft and among the favourites of Ashley “Grabacr” Bernitz, who flew it during the Belkan War.
Technically, his squadron should’ve been equpped with S-32s, a fictional variant based on earlier development designs, as they were the aircraft they flew in the last mission of Ace Combat 5. However, the S-32 is obscure even by Ace Combat standards, having featured only in that game and the ones for hand-held consoles, so I don’t think it is much of a stretch to think Bernitz and the newly reformed Grabacr Squadron simply couldn’t get their hands on more S-32s and actually had to make do with the similar and easier to obtain Su-47 (which, again it is a design he actually flew)
TYPE II GADGET DRONE
Tumblr media
A squadron of five Type II Gadget Drones. I’m sorry for the low quality, but there’s very few images of them around.
The Type II Gadget Drone is an autonomous combat drone that featured in Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha StrikerS. While other Gadget Drones do feature some flying ability, the Type II is the only one that can be considered a proper aircraft.
Its armament consists in missiles and one oversized laser cannon under each wing. Combined with its plausible flying wing design, 444th Air Base’s higher command had no reason to suspect it was any different from aerial weapons that already existed in their world, leading to Spare Squadron getting slaughtered by them.
MIKOYAN-GUREVICH MIG-21
Tumblr media
A MiG-21 in Soviet livery. It has seen better days.
The MiG-21, NATO reporting name “Fishbed”, is a Vietnam War era light fighter developed by the Soviet Union. While it was a sizeable threat back then, nowadays is a very obsolete aircraft that in the Ace Combat games is used as cannon fodder for the player in the early missions.
The ones featured in Chapter 7 were actually old airframes converted into drones with a flight control system reverse-engineerd from the Type II Gadget Drones to be used as disposable decoy fighters in big numbers to distract the JASDF and make them waste planes and ordinance before the real attack force sneaked in.
BM-335 LINDWURM
Tumblr media
Fitting for its origin as a Belkan plane, the Bm-335 does look like something out of WWII Germany.
The Bm-335 Lindwurm is a Belkan bomber from the Ace Combat universe. It is a very old design, having entered service in the 50s, with a distinctive double fuselage necessary to house both its oversized night bombing radar and the similarly oversized nuclear bombs of the era.
An outdated design by the Belkan War in 1995, it was infamously used by the Belkan Air Force during the self-bombing of the Waldreich Mountains, in which seven nuclear bombs were detonated in Belkan soil.
As Belkan forces had more advanced aircraft available even in the world that formed after the Unravel, several Bm-335s were outfitted with the flight control system reverse-engineered from Type II Gadget Drones to act as a decoy disposable bomber force.
NORTHROP GRUMMAN B-2A SPIRIT
Tumblr media
A B-2A Spirit. Note how it is individually named like a ship – not surprising, since they’re worth more than their weight in gold and only 21 were made.
The B-2A Spirit is a stealth bomber developed for the USAF. In the Ace Combat universe, Belka fielded several of them, and the two B-2A pilots featured in Chapter 7, Vulkan and Felsen, are actual pilots from Ace Combat 0. Presumably, the versions of them featured in the story are from before they defected to A World With No Boundaries.
During the failed attack on Tokyo in Chapter 7, B-2As were used as the actual bombing force, escorted by Sukhoi Sv-51s. Both aircraft featured strealth and radar jamming equipment, and were supposed to sneak by thanks to the confusion caused by the decoy drone MiG-21s and Bm-335s, but were discovered and either shot down or forced to retreat.
SUKHOI-IAI-DORNIER SV-51
Tumblr media
A scale model of the Sv-51 in fighter mode.
The Sv-51 is the first Variable Fighter design to appear in World Without Authors (if you discount the static appearance of VF-25s and VF-31s), flown by Svafnir Squadron to escort two B-2As.
A very early Variable Fighter design, it was developed in the Macross universe by Anti-UN forces in the early 2000s, and as such doesn’t have some of the iconic features of Variable Fighters like thermonuclear turbines. While fairly obsolete by Macross standards, it is still a cutting edge machine compared to modern conventional fighter designs thanks to its three-modes trnasformation system and superior agility and engine power.
As no reporting name or nickname was ever given for it in the Macross shows, I took the liberty of having the NATO forces in the leftover world give it the reporting name “Flapper” inspired by how the wings fold up when changing modes.

Sonic Villains: Sweet or Shite? - Part 9: CAPTAIN WHISKER
There are some villains I like. And there are some villains I don’t like. But why do I feel about them the way I do? That’s where this comes in.
This is a series of mine in which I go into slightly more detail about my thoughts on the villains in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, and why I think they either work well, or fall flat (or somewhere in-between). I’ll be giving my stance on their designs, their personalities, and what they had to show for themselves in the game(s) they featured in. Keep in mind that these are just my own personal thoughts. Whether you agree or disagree, feel free to share your own thoughts and opinions! I don’t bite. :>
Anyhow, for today’s installment, we’ll be starting a new venture as we discuss the scourge of a faraway dimension's seven seas, and the envy of frozen food mascots everywhere: Captain Whisker.
Tumblr media
The Gist: Aboard the Tornado, dynamic duo Sonic and Tails were en route to a mysterious energy signal, in the hopes of uncovering what it could possibly be. They were instead greeted with an actual tornado.
They died.
Credits.
Tumblr media
"Ahh! We’re getting sucked in!” “Yeah! Alright! Cool!”
Nah, not really. They washed ashore on Southern Island (presumably not too far from Western Island and Angelern Island), where they met a young girl named Marine, whose ambition quickly proved to eclipse her capabilities a bit too much. Initially, the heroes simply want to return home and have a Winston break, but upon being attacked by a mecha T-Rex, they soon realise someone must be causing trouble around these parts. And Sonic doesn't let evil relax for long.
They soon come face to face with the leader of the nautical-themed robot army they're facing: Captain Whisker. Something about the captain looks... familiar.
Tumblr media
“...What’s going on to my right? I can’t see anything on that side.”
As it turns out, Whisker wants the Jeweled Scepter, a vastly powerful tool that is said to harness the Power of the Stars, which in Sonic lingo basically means "Get fucked, Goku." He steals it, but not before he gets ambushed by the dramatic arrival of Blaze the Cat... who fails to stop the theft, and doesn't even land a hit on the guy.
Tumblr media
E Rank.
It doesn't take long for Blaze to explain to the confused Sonic and Tails that they're the ones in her world, not the other way around. It's assumed that the power of the Jeweled Scepter was responsible for bringing them here in the first place. Blaze also acknowledges that Marine in fact exists. Together, they continue to take on the robot pirates, all the while Whisker continues to commit some dastardly, whisker-twirling crimes. Like freezing the local vikings.
Tumblr media
“It’s one of my most famous abilities, right up there with spinning around the globe to turn back time. I’m also quite good at superweaving.”
With everywhere else in the sea covered on the map, the do-gooders eventually arrive at Whisker's front door, where they trick the captain into giving them the info on how to get in. After a bit of backtracking (and telling Marine to fuck off and stop wasting their time), they make it in and kick some ass in the pirates' Soleanna-looking hideout. They corner the pirate leader, but his second-in-command, Johnny, arrives just in time to even the odds.
Tumblr media
“No, Sonic. The emblem on my chest is a coincidence.”
They proceed to have an all-out brawl with frankly amazing music, but Johnny chickens out and runs with his pipe between his hydraulics. Crestfallen, but not willing to yield, Whisker insists that he will deliver the Jeweled Scepter to an unnamed client by hook or by crook, and Sonic and Blaze ain't gonna stop him.
But they do. With a little help from the surprise return of Marine, they take back the Jeweled Scepter, defeat the captain's Ghost Titan mech, and blow his ship to kingdom come. With the pirates taken care of, the royal guards assure Blaze that they'll take better care of the magical device. The princess expresses relief, confident that her loyal subjects can defend their kingdom's treasure and honor.
Tumblr media
They can't.
In less time than it takes to complete the Water Temple in Ocarina of Time, the Jeweled Scepter gets itself stolen again, this time by the fallen captain's creator and superior: Dr. Eggman... and Eggman Nega, but whatever. Retreating underground, Eggman proceeds to show off with his newfound power (the ladies love the magma dragon trick), but he is eventually defeated by the combined efforts of Super Sonic and Burning Blaze... with a little help from Marine. Again.
The Jeweled Scepter is reclaimed. Sonic and Tails head home. Eggman gets sued by Michel Ancel.
The Design: Captain Whisker is an Eggman robot. He's Eggman's robot. He was built by Eggman. But you wouldn't know that by looking at him.
Tumblr media
The logo doesn't grin. Totally different.
Sarcasm aside, I'm actually a fan of Whisker's design, because it strikes a good balance between comical and badass, which reflects well on his bumbling exterior masking a capable fighter. The skull gauntlets are stylish, and I especially like how one of his eyes lacks an iris, as if to stand-in for his hypothetical eyepatch. For a design that can literally be summed up as "Eggman but if he were a robot pirate", there's a surprising amount of thought put into it.
If only the same could be said for Nega...
(By the way, Johnny has a kickass design as well. The torpedo-for-a-head is a winner.)
The Personality: Whisker doesn't just one-up Nega with his design. He one-ups him in personality too. Sure, he shares some traits with vanilla Eggman. He's loud. He's hammy. He takes his moustache grooming seriously (even though his is made of metal). He doesn't like it when people aren't paying attention to him.
Tumblr media
But here's the thing. He's got his own distinctive flavor. Rather than copying Eggman's mannerisms beat for beat like Nega does, Whisker offers a different spin. He trades the megalomaniacal theatrics for a buccaneer swagger. He trades the spotlights and the statues in favor of singing shanties and using words that were probably out-of-date even when they were in-date. He's more of an airhead compared to the brilliant Eggman. And he actually expresses fear, in particular at the thought of his master's ire.
Tumblr media
“You wouldn’t know him. Big guy, ‘stache like mine, hates hedgehogs, sounds an awful lot like Mike Pollock...”
Compared to Nega, Whisker simply makes much more of an effort to be his own character. In spite of his physical resemblance, he's not just Eggman #2. And in a world where Eggman #2 is an officially approved thing, I can appreciate that.
The Execution: Captain Whisker isn't your Eggman, or your Chaos, or your Black Doom. He's not the final obstacle. He's here to provide a few hijinks before the real mastermind turns up. In the role that he plays, he plays that role marvellously.
While the Captain sadly lacks much screentime outside of evading the heroes' wrath, he makes up for it with a memorable presence and a barrel of laughs. They could have completely phoned it in here. Why wouldn't they? He looks like a ripoff, and he's ultimately the equivalent of a filler villain anyway. And yet somehow, this decoy antagonist has more life and character put into him than a sizable margin of the "serious" villains in the Sonic universe, including Eggman Nega, Mephiles, and every single Archie recolour you can shake a lawsuit at.
Look, if Blaze absolutely MUST have an arch-enemy, and if said arch-enemy absolutely MUST look like Eggman... why not pick Whisker over Nega? He provides a better contrast with Eggman and with Blaze, and you can even handwave his presence as Eggman's way of keeping tabs on Blaze's world whenever he's too occupied with his own. Surely that would be a little better than having an identical looking guy running around in a different dimension (or the future) for no reason.
Well, until then, I'll keep supporting the good captain. I have to. He might kill me.

The Long Game
Tumblr media
A conversation about schools reopening:                               Part one (uno, un) of presumably many.
There was one year I celebrated the First Day Of School with such vigor and rebelliousness that the moment I got home from the double-drop-off, I stripped down to my undies and ate pesto from the jar, on the couch, like a crazy woman.
Last year, the first day of school was delayed for four days because of construction and I had a full-on meltdown. Get these kids out of the house!!
Now, here we sit, atop an entirely different perspective. That Holiest of Days means nothing.
Finish lines and dates-to-look-forward-to-with-certainty during this pandemic are as arbitrary as the outcome of a toddler game of pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey. I’ve been applying a lowered-gaze to these long, long days, a here-and-now approach to get us through to the finish line of school starting. Not thinking about the Long Game has been a survival tactic to avoid an onslaught of overwhelm and to allow more room for joy and sanity. (There are plenty of tough days that happen organically, without the pressure of trying to figure it all out.)
Back in March, I thought, (many of us thought), ok this is crazy, but they’ll surely get back to school in the fall. And what an epic celebration THAT First Day will be!
Especially after this four+ month stint of no school, no sitters, no public places open (safely), no playdates or kid swaps, no summer camps or extracurriculars, and no travel! I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t holding up the First Day as a beacon of hope, grabbing at it like fruit for a starving soul that hangs way beyond my reach.
Up until last Wednesday, we could still speculate about school as some far-off agenda. Of course there was no way school could start up again as per usual, but I pushed that slippery little thought out of my mind every time it landed.
Now, heavy with reluctance, I am beginning to mourn the loss of the reality I was hoping for—to have Opal back in school and Ruth in preschool three full-days a week! (That was new, for the two years prior, she attended preschool for three half-days, which just barely covered my part-time work load.) The generous portions of un-scheduled time (that far surpass the needs of my job, which I will not be doing for the foreseeable future anyhow, since giving massage to elders with dementia and Alzheimers is such a dangerous gig right now) were joyfully staggering to think about.
Once the facts came to light, hard and fast on the computer screen, it no longer worked to play dumb about what the fall might look like. They announced this week that BVSD (Boulder Valley School District) would be opening schools for two days a week, a “hybrid model,” starting one week late, end of August. Half the class will attend Tuesday and Wednesday, half will attend Thursday and Friday. On the not-in-person days, kids will do online schooling. (Kids can also opt out of this for fully online, at-home schooling.)
The kids will be required to wear masks and keep their distance. There will be partitions and well-spaced desks and lots of outside time. The precautions will be thorough and lengthy, but necessary.
Joseph G. Allens, assistant professor of exposure assessment science at Harvard says, “On prevention, we are seeing that in many hospitals, the number of infections of front-line doctors and nurses has dropped way down. Why? Strict controls are in place focusing on just three things: mask-wearing, hand-washing and air-cleaning.”
This is positive news for the kids who are old enough to be mindful and take precautions. Luckily, Opal is old enough to be developmentally capable of following all the rules, not only because that is who she is, but because she understands this is what needs to happen for the public’s health. Five years ago, she may have had good intentions, but would’ve been developmentally unable of doing what needed to be done. Five years from now, she may be nursing a rebellious phase—who knows. So, we rejoice at the fact that she is eddying in the safest spot—age and development-wise—that she possibly could. (Not to mention her motivator-of-wise-choices is far more ubiquitous and scary than simply aiming to be a ‘good girl.’)
Ruth, who is four and still taste things from the ground, is another story altogether. And to intensify that reality is that she’d be in a classroom of 11 other small-children-examples. When I imagine a birds-eye-view of her classroom, I see piles of children, not individual bodies, all heaped onto a particular play area like puppies on a teat. The personified opposite of social distancing.
And because we have grandparents to think about, we have chosen to keep Ruth from the fray of preschool for the time being. (I acknowledge we are fortunate to have this choice.) This is devastating and confusing for her, she is longing for her friends and teachers, the world she cultivated for the prior two years, half her life. She still doesn’t understand why school stopped so abruptly, why she never got to say goodbye to her class, why she can’t see any of them now, except for on a screen.
(Ruth sometimes refers to The Virus as almost a villain-character. She’ll be lying in bed and suddenly, disgustedly, shout, “THAT VIRUS IS SO RUDE!”)
For the last few days, I’ve been saturating myself in news articles about how schools plan to re-open next month and the safety of it all—for grandparents, for teachers, for us. I vacillate between, this will be weird but fine and yikes and wait, is this the best approach?
There is a staggering amount to consider, and yet a minuscule amount of certain information out there. Almost every article I read about young kids and COVID—can they spread it??—is filed under the opinion section of the paper. Info feels sparse and mostly speculative. I don’t trust it. At least not on her grandparents’ lives. Schools in Europe reopened months ago, where is the research from that?
Brian P. Gill, senior fellow at Mathematica, (a nonpartisan public-policy research and analysis firm), had some optimistic things to say. He said, “When reopening schools, he’d most recommend a staggered start and to reduce the number of students in schools and classrooms. “We believe this can dramatically slow the spread of COVID-19—even if children are not especially good at wearing masks or maintaining physical distance.”
I really don’t know who or what to believe at this point. I find myself glomming on to the positive bits, sharing a hopeful thought or article with friends, accompanied by a prayer-hands emoji. Then I will read something that troubles me and I turn leaden and sink to the bottom of my mental well. I usually don’t share those articles. It cycles back and forth like this.
But returning to the bricks-and-mortar plans for Opal’s upcoming school year:
I try to imagine what this will all look like. The rooms will be half-full of socially distanced little bodies, all looking like mini-surgeons in their masks and ranging in age and size and from approximately 5 to 10 years old. Opal is on the older end, and I imagine her classroom to look like theater—where everyone has an excessive personal bubble and the plastic partition creates a glare from every angle and warps the images on either side. Connections will have to be made in code, sideways, or way too loud to overcome the cloth curtains that cover mouths. I imagine the resurgence of note-passing, like when I was a kid and we’d fold them into little origami packages and pass them along to the desired recipient, hopefully out of the teacher’s gaze. But in this case, they’d need to be tossed rather than passed—the closest desk will be six feet away.
Will they be able to see the preposterousness in all of it? Will they be able to share a good laugh about it or will it all seem like dreadful torture? I’m sure perspectives will vacillate from one end of the spectrum to the other, the way they do now.
I do solemnly wish that everyone enter the first day of school expecting nothing less than chaos and confusion, and because of that, they will offer each other more slack and kindness. This sucks equally for everyone, the whole dang village. There’s got to be some solace in that?
(And can I get a moment of silent mercy for all these teachers, even the grumpiest ones? I cannot fathom the ninja-brainwork required to hold all these pieces together. The effort is heroic.)
We would probably consider kiboshing the whole operation if it were to last any longer than two days. That’s plenty manageable. And Opal wants it so bad. The sense of purpose, of community, of life-beyond-the-walls-of-our-home. She told me she’s dying to see the eyes of all her friends, even above a mask, as long as it’s not on a screen! Preach.
I am well aware that this equation doesn’t help parents who are trying to get back to work, but, again, I appreciate what Brian P. Gill has to say about it:
“As parents ourselves, we would much prefer that our child’s school be open for a predictable two days a week than a highly unpredictable cycle of opening and closing. But more important than our own preferences are these facts: Unpredictably difficult experiences create more stress and more downstream health problems than predictably difficult experiences, even if the experience itself is equivalent in all other respects. And for children, more predictability yields better emotional health, a key predictor of life outcomes.”
SO here we are, bouncing around the map of this pandemic with, what often feels like, no real direction. At the entrance of yet another entirely foreign trail to blaze—with kids, with grandparents, woven into the threads of our decision making more than ever before in our previous lives.
We want to give our kids the moon, but for right now, maybe the best thing we can give them is predictability.
Joseph Allen said it well, “I wish it was different. We can continue to push for things to get better — and maybe our government will course-correct. Until then, we must forge a path forward with the reality we have, not the one we want.”
