Oh yeah, I saw that. No bothering here! If anything I was afraid because I got no idea how to pick a least favourite when I love all these funky guys...

I feel like it's a draw between two, if I had to dig a bit.

Similar to how my partner said, dolphins feel pretty overrated when it comes to aquatic mammals. You see them everywhere tropical ever. There's some really neat species for sure but as a whole I don't entirely see people talking about the really cool ones.

Like dolphins though, I also find seals to be the same. People love to look at all the cute ones and focus on them but iunno... There's way cooler. For example, elephant seals are total badasses. People are way too mean to them because they think they look ugly. Can't appreciate a terrifying sea mammal when they see one smh.

I’mma answer BOTH of these, because I know EXACTLY who is the most underrated character imo, AND I have three other characters who I wish had more screentime!

Most Underrated Character in the show, in my humble opinion is...

THIS MAN RIGHT HERE, DAMMIT!

He was an absolute KING! He’s probably the best frigging antagonist that Phineas and the gang have ever faced, and NO ONE TALKS ABOUT HIM! No one talks about how this shitty overlord of a capitalist actually managed to PISS PHINEAS OFF! This episode isn’t even a special - and it’s one of the few times Phineas is anything but happy. You wanna know why? THIS GUY!

Mittington Random had bite, he was fun, he had CLASS, he was a total asshole, he was willing to KIDNAP CHILDREN and an ENDANGERED SPECIES OF LIVING FABRIC and he did this all with a charismatic grin, I love this son of a bitch and I’m sad we never got another episode with this cad!

But as much as I love and adore this man, and know he deserved to be the main antagonist of a movie, and is the PERFECT antithesis of Phineas himself (a man who uses his skills to get himself some cash and doesn’t care WHO he steps on to get that achievement), here are some other characters I wish had more time to shine:

Not necessarily with Isabella - I would’ve loved an episode that showcased them as a group WITHOUT Isabella being there. I love Isabella as a Fireside Girl, but the focus is usually set on either her, or Ginger - sometimes Gretchen and Adyson. Where’s my love for Milly, Holly, and...uh...the blonde one-KATIE! Yeah! Katie is her name! Yes...yeah...

But yeah, these girls have enough personality and quirks to hold their own, without Isabella necessarily being there. That doesn’t mean I wouldn’t have wanted more Isabella and the Fireside Girls episodes, because I love all of them, but like - if Irving and Baljeet can have their own episodes, why not them?

I must reiterate how much of a lost opportunity it was for these two to never have another major role in an episode again? We saw them in the background a couple times, but like - they’re perfect antagonistic foils. Come to think of it, what would their “gang” look like - where’s the Thaddeus and Thor versions of Isabella, Baljeet, Buford, heck, even IRVING? I wanna see that episode.

And finally, of course:

Django Brown. He and his sister were ROBBED, they need more screentime, end of story. Like, he was the ORIGINAL sixth ranger of the PnF Gang, and while I love Irving, it doesn’t change the fact that he basically stole that spot from him. And the show doesn’t even FORGET about Django - to pour salt into the wound, we see him multiple times in the background, and even participating in some of Phineas and Ferb’s adventures but with little to no major role. Heck, I’ve literally seen him on a page of a PnF comic where it looked like he HAD a role in it, BUT WE NEVER SEE HIM AGAIN IN IT! It’s like - they KNOW!

I can only guess that they stopped using Django in the main scheme of things because they no longer thought him to be necessary - probably because Django isn’t as interesting as other characters, sadly. But that’s no excuse! They should’ve MADE him more interesting, this kid has so much potential! His sister is a flipping HIPPIE for heaven’s sake! He’s an artist! Artists are fun to write! Heck, he’s also a contortionist, that joke was hilarious, ya’ll can’t tell me they couldn’t come up with fun stuff to do with this nerd!

So yeah. That’s my two cents. Once again, Mittington Random deserves more FRIGGING attention from the fandom, like, COME ON PEOPLE! Where’s my Random love?!

Wishmaster (1997)

Wishmaster has its flaws, but when it comes to what you want to see in a fantasy horror film, it delivers in spades.

You’ve heard the premise of the movie before; it’s basically the monkey’s paw, or any given story where a character is given any number of wishes courtesy of a malevolent force who will twist people’s words at every opportunity to turn what you want to get into something lethal. An ancient entity known as a Djinn (Andrew Divoff) is discovered by Alexandra “Alex” Amberson (Tammy Lauren). The Djinn gathers human souls, by twisting their wishes in lethal ways. If, for example, you wished to be the first person on Mars, the Djinn would instantly teleport you there... but without any oxygen. The souls it's gathering will allow it to open the gateway between worlds and bring forth the entire Djinn species as the new rulers of Earth, but only after the young woman makes her third wish.

Before you question my 4/5 rating, consider what kind of horror film this is. The premise isn’t entirely original, but it delivers. It's a buffet of original deaths and amazing special effects. When the Djinn kills people, it isn’t cleaving people with a machete of chopping them with a chainsaw; every death is unique and original. We’ve got people getting turned into monsters, including a guy whose skin comes off and gets transformed into a living, killer skeleton. Other victims are incinerated, hideously deformed or skinned alive. There are all kinds of deliciously ghoulish displays, and you actually get to see everything. When a man gets bludgeoned, you witness the guy screaming, a club coming towards his face and then you get a nice shot of what’s left of it after the impact. There are a few brief computer-generated images that are dated, but Wishmaster always leans towards excellent practical effects.

Another appealing aspect is the villain. The Djinn actively travels, looking for victims. Disguising himself as a regular man, he walks around, chatting with unsuspecting men and women, just waiting for them to slip up. There’s a decent amount of anticipation whenever he interacts with people, as the Djinn can only use his magical powers when asked to do so. You’re only dead if you happen to phrase your sentences in a way he can exploit. If you say something along the lines of “I wish you would leave me alone and never come near me again” he’s compelled to grant you your wish. The trick, of course, is that he coaxes his victims into forming vague statements and provokes them into saying things without thinking.

The real hero is the casting of Andrew Divoff. Both in and out of the impressive Djinn makeup, the man's got presence. He’s got that right mix of a unique voice, and one that can be easily imitated so you and your friends can quote him as he gleefully exclaims “As you wish” before the poor victims bite the dust. He's as good as Tony Todd, Robert Englund, Kane Hodder or Angus Scrimm in their iconic roles. They seemed to think so as well, as they all appear in the film!

Let's not forget to give credit to our heroine Alex. She’s not just sitting around waiting for doom to come to her, she’s going and investigating the Djinn, looking for a way to destroy him when the inevitable confrontation happens. She’s nearly as enjoyable to follow as the bad guy, and in a horror franchise, that’s a big compliment. With her, the premium special effects, fun kills and memorable villain, I’m shocked Wishmaster isn’t more widely known among fans of the horror genre.

My main criticisms concern the “rules” of this story. We are told the Djinn's magic can only be used when people ask him to, but he is also able to change his appearance in order to blend in with regular people. This could've easily been fixed either by establishing this as a natural ability, or by having him encounter someone who is absolutely terrified by his appearance and wishes they would not have to see his face anymore, or by having a grieving woman ask that she see her husband’s face one more time and have him wear it instead of the guy come back to life. This, and a few minor instances of rule-breaking could've been tightened up. Another letdown is the ending. With a premise that’s familiar, the ending really needed to be a whole new take on the evil wish thing or a very clever way to take the familiar tropes of the story and give them a whole new shine. Instead, we get a very standard conclusion. if you can’t guess how the movie wraps up, I'll be shocked.

If you’re not a fan of horror or you prefer deep, intellectually stimulating dramas or witty French farces, Wishmaster isn’t for you. For horror movie fans, you can't miss it, hence my skewed rating. I say Wishmaster is highly underrated. (On DVD, July 24, 2014)

OC Interview Tag

Thank you @westywrites for the tag! I feel like I underrate Sebastian even though he’s one of my favourite characters at the same time(????) so I’m going to interview him! Along with his sister Miriam because I want to work on making them having different voices.

Rules: Pick a character from your WIP and have them answer these fifteen questions, then tag people.

1. What is your full name?

Sebastian Phineas Alexander Schwarz. Phineas, obviously, is after my dad. Alexander is after Alex, who my parents babysat when they were teenagers. Schwarz is also after my dad because that’s his surname. And then my mother liked Sebastian so that was her contribution.

Miriam Elena Arnette. Miriam is a more formal homage to my mother’s middle name (Mirabelle), Elena is after my paternal grandmother and Arnette is my mother’s surname.

2. What does your full name mean?

Sebastian was an early Christian martyr who was both tied to a tree and shot with arrows as well as being clubbed to death- hence why I’m unholy as heck to prevent that happening to me. Alexander means ‘defending men’ and as the future leader of Phinea, I guess I have to defend my people (not just men though). Phineas means ‘oracle’, which suits my dad better. Schwarz is German for black.

Miriam means ‘wished for’, which is ironic since my father disowned me. Elena means ‘bright, shining light’ even though, I can assure you, I’m the opposite of that. Arnette was just made up by the author and is too uncommon to find any information on (whoopsie).

3. What are your nicknames/other names?

Both of us don’t really go by nicknames but mine is Seb or Sebi whereas Miriam’s list of hated nicknames include Marnie and Mirry.

4. What’s your gender?

I’m male and Miriam is female.

5. What’s your sexuality?

Bisexual. My first two partners were female but now I’m ‘experimenting with’ the opposite sex.

6. Where are you from?

Mindeya, the Phinean capital. Born and bred.

Natli, Vanska’s capital. I wasn’t born there though.

7. How old are you?

We’re both fifteen. We’re not twins though; our parents decided to do the nooky not too long after I was born and Miriam was slightly premature on top of that. 

Sebastian’s birthday is early September and I was born mid-August the following year.

8. What is your magic form/what species are you?

We’re both humans but have abilities. I’m a Guarder.

I’m a Time-Turner. 

9. What does your human form look like?

I’m short like mother and thin like dad. Curly, messy brown hair which is almost the same colour as my skin. And I have light green eyes.

On the other hand, I have dad’s height and mother’s slightly thick and curvy build. My hair is also curly but darker, closer to black. I’m slightly paler than Seb but it’s still obvious I’m mixed. I have amber eyes and a prosthetic left arm.

10. What’s your aesthetic?

Even though Vanska is the steampunk empire, I still wear some of their gear, including some goggles and an old jacket Miriam grew out of. I skateboard and dabble with some things which my dad thinks are illegal so I guess a thrifty steampunk vibe.

Whatever you associate with cold. It’s my personality and how I always feel. I wear a (vegan) leather jacket but that’s seen as the norm in Vanska for those of us who don’t want our ribs broken by corsets. And books. I love reading.

11. Who’s your best friend?

Best friends are for weenies. I’ve got lots of friends but nobody I’d class as ‘best’.

My childhood best friend was Roman and at school it’s Cyrus. Now the two are together, it’s made it a lot more difficult.

12. Would you ever get a piercing/tattoo?

I’ve got a few piercings but don’t wear my studs that often. I have commitment issues so getting a tattoo is probably a bad idea.

I have absolutely no interest in either.

13. When are you happiest?

When I’m left alone and have some sort of (non-academic) challenge to solve. Tinkering, how to land a jump on my skateboard, how to escape the house without being caught by any of my dad’s workers...all fun.

When I get to be a grandmother. In bed, alone, with a cup of tea and a book or some knitting needles.

14. What’s your biggest secret?

How much illegal crap that I have in my bedroom cupboard. I keep my room a mess so my no one attempts to clean the place.

My family have been keeping secrets from me, but I’ve hidden the fact I’ve known what they are for a long time.

15. What was your first impression of [each other]?

Miriam was in her unstable stage when we first met. Dad and Uncle Dimitri wanted me to get to know her so we’d purposely get paired into group projects. She was annoying and bossy but boy, did she naturally take to leadership. When needed, she could take control of our group projects with the Vanskan virtue of being harsh but fair. So Sebastian was really annoyed by her, but Secondary Master Schwarz was annoyed at how she could naturally do everything he was nagged about.

I’d been told to get on with the Secondary Master of Phinea before I left school, but wow, was he annoying. We’re both blunt and can get on people’s nerves when we don’t consider what we’re saying but the main difference between us was Sebastian is lazy as hell. He was that annoying person who committed just enough in our group projects that he wouldn’t be failed. But he followed me the lunch after the project and I realised he was still like that, but just less caricatured.
