I’ve been seeing your posts lately, and as a fellow POI fan I must ask what are your top five favorite person of interest episodes? Thanks for reading this you rock!! 😉

1: The Devil You Know

I have Morior Invictus tattooed on my leg. It was the first tattoo I ever got and far from the best I have but I have zero regrets.

If nothing else I hope I am remembered as a Team Elias fucker first and a human being second.

This episode is my absolute fave because it goes into more detail about Elias and Anthony's relationship and their loyalty to each other (parallel to what John and Finch, and Shaw and Root have going on). It's the first time we're really shown what Anthony is like outside of Hot Sarcastic Henchman, like the way he thinks and why he is how he is, and Elias being willing to risk his own life to save him after, for the majority of the show, being like "I'm better off alone", which is fucking poetic cinema honestly.

Plus Winston Duke and Jamie Hector are FANTASTIC, especially with the lieutenants talking to each other ("someday you might find yourself sitting in a chair that looks a hell of a lot like this one"), and Elias pleading with Dominic.

I really think those two were fucking WASTED in season four, they're both phenomenal actors in their own rights and they should've had better. I have, uh, a couple of fics in both my head and my WIP document about them. But we'll deal with those later

2: If/Then/Else

If/Then/Else is literally one of the best episodes, maybe THE best episode of television ever made. (It's kinda like my favourite v the best type situation, much like with The Thing v In The Mouth of Madness if that makes sense). It's got everything: action, time loops, love confessions, FUSCO

The other three are a little more difficult.

I really enjoy Number Crunch, Flesh and Blood, and Firewall in Season 1. In Season 2 my faves are God Mode, Relevance and Prisoner's Dilemma (Donnelly my love). Season 3 is Lady Killer, The Crossing and The Devil's Share. Season 4 is Pretenders, Asylum and YHWH. Season 5 is 6,741, The Day the World Went Away and Return 0 (with honourable mentions to Sotto Voce and Shotseeker because Elias, and QSO because Scott Adsit my beloved)

If you wanna pick three and ask me what I like about them go ahead but I'm struggling to pick between them haha

just finished electric sun so here’s my thoughts. i’m very emotional rn so this may not be very comprehensible but that’s okay.

first of all if you’re going to listen to this album in any order you MUST listen to it from start to finish. no shuffles no skipping around no nothing. it is a story. a full on journey. don’t skip the instrumental tracks. just let them play. it’s worth it i promise. just start to end go through it. turn your brain off and just listen. i usually listen to music while i’m doing something but it was so immersive i just sat down and listened other than to tell mars my thoughts.

a little background, vnv’s last album was noire which came out 5 years ago in 2018. i did like noire a lot but it didn’t stick out as one of their best albums by any means. it was much more pop-y than a lot of their others stuff and it didn’t really have the power a GOOD vnv nation album does. i liked a lot of the songs personal faves were immersed and all our sins but they weren’t raw enough. i needed more Depth. electric sun is exactly what i was looking for in which noire lacked. the two teaser songs before the rain and wait were the perfect singles they could’ve chosen, any others would’ve spoiled too much of the story. before the rain actually ended up being one of my favorite vnv nation songs period, i ADORE that song, and wait is the perfect growl-y sound i missed so bad. they were the best songs they could’ve chosen to introduce the audience to the album.

frankly the MESSAGE of this album is fuckin, insane. prophet is a direct take down of modern christianity. the game + wait are about capitalistic corruption. i mean this is what vnv nation has ALWAYS been about but there’s no more subtext about it anymore lmfao, it’s just text now. the story of loss, struggling to find your place in a society that corrupts, that is unfair, that fate has damned the average, but persevering, surviving, rising with your peers and fighting back despite it all, is so. it’s really really good and is something people needed to hear in the times we find ourselves in now. it’s very deeply moving. invictus made me weep like a baby and i really cannot remember the last time music has made me honest to god SOB the way that song did. the overarching message of survival in a world which that has damned you is very important to me. it’s something i needed and i think something many others did too. sunflare ends the album with the final words

that trails into under sky, a solemn and moving instrumental of reflection. like night sky reflected on water. it’s very.. god i have no words. i really am speechless. i know i’ve said so much already but i cannot even wrap my head around the way my chest felt so heavy at the end of this album. so sorrowful and moved. good god. actually completely breathless. this album carries a slow waltz in the background melody of most of the songs. it’s eerie, it’s cold, it’s so insidious when it needs to be, it carries so much meaning, it carries you through the album. this album is like a reflection pool. revealing hidden truths. the night and darkness. it’s insane. it’s everything i wanted it to be and more.  it’s deeply magical. i’m obsessed and moved and changed. good god.

please. if you like darkwave/future pop/industrial branches of music please please listen to electric sun. i cannot recommend it enough. ronan harris is such a wonderful weaver of webs in music and this is his next best story. vnv nation is primarily a solo act, all of the music is composed and played and written by one man. his music is such an impressive display of mastery of sound and tone and message and i will never not recommend vnv nation endlessly. if you had to start somewhere god start here. i cannot say enough here. 10/10. quite possibly my new favorite album period.

Invictus

this is my firstborn. my child. my love. it started out as a mcu fanfic but holy shit it’s grown so much bigger than that. it’s about Lilith, my beloved vampire child, who lives her life trying to figure out who she is. she’s got her adopted brother, Jared, who is like her second half. her adopted sister Isabela who could care less about morality. then she’s got her closest friends: Maria (trans woman!) and Abraham Van Helsing (siblings), Mordecai (love interest), Moira, and Thomas Harker, Samson (Helaku) and Shaw (Waya) Harlow. there is SO much more but i have the other 7 to talk about lmao. i have a blog for the book series and have a pinterest board for the story (characters are separate on my account)

Under the Windy City

its my version of the YA genre. but the kids are actually in their 20s cause teens should NOT be doing these dangerous tasks. again its a hefty plot so i’ll keep it simple. its set in modern day. the only change is that natural disaster is closer than we predicted. three 20 somethings end up being experimented on to save their lives from terrible accidents. as a result, they are brought into a whole new underground world of scientists and activists trying to find ways for the human race to evolve and to save earth. there will be three sides: extremists (the first trio of the experiments but it went wrong), the middle (the scientists, activist, and our new main trio), and the deniers (your billionaires, your closed-minded christians, your climate change deniers, etc etc). the clock is ticking as natural disaster is on the rise and the trio must try and save humanity. yes, i have a pinterest board for the story (characters are separate on my account)

The supernatural trilogy: Dark to Light, Whose Woods These Are I Think I Know, and Reapers

yes, its a trilogy, but none of the books are connected by characters. its connected by the fact that its based in reality and follows detectives with a supernatural twist. 

Dark to Light follows a woman who is a detective and she has many psychic abilities such as speaking with the dead, sensing death, etc. 

WWTAITIK follows two retired detectives (who are also husband and wife) dragged back into the world as an old case of theirs comes back to haunt them. her deranged sister killed his younger sister just before killing herself. the sister confessed to all the serial killings they were following. but she also told everyone that the spirit told her to do it. after laying their family members to rest, the couple retired and moved north to remove themselves from society. now they work at a lumber company to get by. they also have to raise their niece that his sister left behind. after nearly 10 years, their old friend comes back with a case that mirrors the past case down to every detail. basically they gotta figure out wtf is going on and oh shit ghosts arent real, are they?

Reapers follows another married detective couple. she dies while getting to nosy on a large case. a year later she’s resurrected by a native american woman from legends ago. there is a whole cult of women resurrected to get vengeance on their killers. our main ch finds her husband again and the rest of the story follows this group taking on the case that killed our girl. its has deeper roots than they thought and opens up many other issues to follow. this book will be a big one with two volumes. this book could be two books easily but i gotta keep it a trilogy so...

If I Should Die and What Lies Underneath

this one is my second child. ive had it for a while now. 

the plot of both follows a woman (young adult in the first book) as her niece goes missing and she goes on a suicidal mission to try and get her back. the first book ends without a happy ending. the second book takes place almost 20 years later and our girl is a detective (she now works with the detectives that worked on her case and helped her do some illegal shit). we find out who took her niece, but it isn’t a fun reveal. this is so vague but i feel like this covers it fairly well. holy shit i keep forgetting i dont have a pinterest board for this story ahhh

Blood on These Hands

a new baby. the newest. i got inspired by mudbound (2017). it follows a woman returning back from WWII after getting the highest honor and getting honorably discharged in early 1945. she served with both the soviets and the usa. instead of returning to her home state, she fulfills a promise she made to a close friend from the war. she moves down south to work for his family. she deals with sexism, racism in the eyes of a white women and how sometimes her helping actually harms, and all the psychological effects of war and childhood trauma. this pinterest board was easy to make since i knew exactly what the aesthetic would be

Untitled work

another new baby. this one was actually a dream i had. the dream came in two parts, and im unsure about the second part so idk if that will make a 10th work in progress or not. 

this one also follows a woman returning home from the iraq war. she ends up having to take care of the family cabin so she decides to just move in. the town is small so word travels fast. and since she’s had a rough past, the town still whispers about her. for work, her adopted sister and the sisters girlfriend open up a center for women, kids, mentally ill, lgbtq, victims of systematic or direct racism, and all abuse victims to come and get help and shelter. most of the townsfolk dont like it so the conflict is trying to keep the shelter alive and growing. our main ch also connects with an old childhood friend. his family cabin is across from hers, and she finds out quickly that hes not really there by choice. with trying to keep the shelter alive, she also tries to help her childhood friend get out under his fathers abusive ruling. and yes you bet your ass i have a pinterest board

and there you have it! all my active WIPs. will you be able to read any of these soon? i can say with complete honesty: no. will you ever be able to read any of these? i have no fucking clue. one thing is for certain: Invictus will get done no matter what. if it kills me, thats how i want to go. everyone needs to experience that book series otherwise i might go insane. @sweetstilesofmine (and by default my sis @p-rincesskaguya) dont hear the end of my rants about invictus. so they might lose their minds if i dont publish it either.

     Hi! Oh, there are so many good Obikin fics and it can be a little overwhelming to know where to start, so this is a list that I’m aiming at someone who’s just getting started in the fandom. Okay okay okay. I'll try to stay true to the ask. And only cheat a little by saying Nights of Gethsemane/Invictus/Release of Sisyphus. Like, that would technically be more than one, but they're all the same series so??? Leniency, please?

Anyway, they're on my faves list! And some of the fics I've read the most often. Also the fics I most treat like real books I love, in that sometimes I go back and just read my favorite sections. Just rereading them endlessly and then jumping to the best bits in the between times. And I imagine if they were on my shelf they would look BUSTED. Just worn out with broken spines and yellowed pages and probably not very pretty but very well loved!!!

But ALSO hear me out, what about the Tea series??

Okay but also hear me out...(this will satisfy my need to give more than one answer but also be an interesting addition, right??) Let's say that if I had to pick a series to put on my shelves it would be NoG, but if I had to pick a standalone novel it would be When the Rose and the Fire Are One. Like...I feel like that fic necessitates a gorgeous cover because it's a gorgeous story, but also I think I would treat it with more respect so it would stay looking pretty. It would be like the pride of place on my bookshelf. I'd show it to guests, as one does with their nice books. (People do that, right, or just me? "Come on in, GUEST, and look at my BOOKS.")

001. favorite fic you wrote this year i have a soft spot for take my hand (take my everything) which was the first fic i wrote this year! and kind of the first step back into writing creatively on something new that wasn’t the 7 year monster sterek fic. also my first foray into 9-1-1 fic and was just a lot of fun! 

007. longest completed fic you wrote this year the longest fic i wrote was my second for the year! so show me (family) wound up being around 16k+ for 9-1-1 which kind of burst out of me over the course of one 48 hour window unlike take my hand which took a few weeks to crank out. 

025. a fic you read this year you would recommend everyone read SO MANY FICS DUDE!!! i’m gonna rec a couple, some that i re-read this year and some that i discovered for the first time, all from a variety of fandoms. only a very few people in the world know that the celebrated and reclusive poet jack allen is just kansas mechanic dean winchester, a high school dropout with a few bucks to his name. not that it matters anymore; life has left him so wrung out he never wants to pick up another pen.

until, that is, a string of coincidences leads dean to auditing a poetry course with one dr. castiel novak. the professor is wildly intelligent, devastatingly handsome...and just so happens to be academia’s foremost expert on the poetry of jack allen.

note: i discovered this fic back in the pre-pandemic times of feb 2020 and i’ve read this fic TWICE since, leaving a lengthy comment each time. the poetry in the fic itself is stunningly gorgeous and i have a habit of reading it out loud to myself while reading bc it begs to be heard. this fic is seriously beautiful and makes me want to read all the poet!dean au’s out there in the world. unfortunately there aren’t that many so i just keep coming back to this well. i don’t think i can express enough how much i love this fic. 

lost time by ARCurren (105/105 | 350k+ | T)  bransonxsybil; AU: canon divergent; outsider POVs; original characters; slow burn

the story of a free spirit who was asked to give up the man she loved for a system she didn’t believe in and what happened next. AU after 3.04. 

note: did i think, when i stumbled across this fic years ago, that it would wind up being one of my all time favorites that i return to time and again to re-read? never. did i re-read it for like the dozenth time this year?? 110%. this fic is everything i want from fanfiction—it’s beautifully written, expands on canon, and shows me all the hidden moments the cameras never did (not to mention it’s historically accurate and delves deep into irish politics of the time). the first third or so of this fic is all about tom and sybil’s slow burn romance at downton, but the fic really bursts into its own when we follow the two to dublin and get introduced to all of the author’s deliciously detailed oc’s. heads up warning: this fic was never officially completed, though the final chapter is a beautifully written summary of the final arc of the fic. even so, it’s fucking worth it.

note: this fic is the first in the misfire ‘verse and i need you to understand that it literally broke me when i binge read these fics a month or so ago. i am a sucker for a solid time travel fic especially bc there are such few good ones in fandom. but this gets at the heart of it all by exploring the idea of stiles getting the chance to save derek’s family and taking it...after he and derek are romantically together in his true timeline and then actually dealing with the ramifications of how that alters everything and how stiles survives in this new present where he and derek are virtual strangers. everyone should definitely read this, but you should also know that i fucking sobbed while reading the sequel (which also has a happy ending, but really digs deep into the nitty gritty angst of the repercussions).

the world’s already over and they’re already dead. all they’re doing now is marking time until the end. 

note: look, if you don’t know about down to agincourt by @seperis, what are you doing with your life?? the series is over 1M+ words so far, the fic author is on book 4 out of a planned 8, and it’s fucking phenomenal. i know i’ve tagged a couple of these recs as slow burn but...this is the slowest slow burn to ever burn. canon!dean travels back into the end!verse timeline just as lucifer kills dean and somehow cas made it out alive and has to keep dean safe while he learns to become his end!verse counterpoint. the world building in this series is intense and i cannot recommend it enough. i’m still in the midst of my re-read bc it’s SUCH an endeavor but i highly recommend it to everybody.

note: hello, have you ever wondered what the hunger games series would be like if haymitch’s family were alive? i fucking hadn’t until 2 years ago when i stumbled across this fic and fell head over heels in love with this ship. @ellanainthetardis is my go to hunger games fic writer for anything exploring canon and i’m obsessed with anything she writes about the OG victors pre-canon (finnick, joanna, chaff, etc). this fic is just 300k+ exploring that world and all the intricate details of how cruel the games could really be. HIGHLY recommend. i definitely re-read it this fall when i needed a pick me up.

don’t know what i’m supposed to do (haunted by the ghost of you) by crazyassmurdererwall (1/1 | 30k+ | T) sterek; canon divergent; angst with a happy ending; ghosts; stiles POV

stiles sees dead people. yep. seriously.

(he’s got this. he’s totally got this. so what if one of them is derek’s mom?)

note: did you know that @crazyassmurdererwall is one of my all time favorite people? and that she’s wicked talented? and that in our spare time she’ll send me a billion fic ideas that are amazing and i get to hear all the intricate details of her plot bunnies? but i digress. this fic is one of my all time fave sterek fics i’ve re-read it sooo many times. there’s just something about the heartache and stiles’ insecurity and the way he tries to shoulder it all on his own. and then there’s alli’s brilliant writing, the way she weaves through a scene and paints a picture just so and manages to tug at your heart strings with her precise word choice. there’s some amazing world building in this fic as it explores this other facet of the supernatural that canon teen wolf never touched upon, and i’m so grateful for that bc alli is the only one who should be allowed to write about ghosts and teen wolf together. 

lagavulin and guinness by snarfle (10/10 | 163k+ | explicit) hartwin; slow burn; PTSD; suicidal thoughts; graphic depictions of violence; domestic abuse

plenty of people had looked down on eggsy throughout his life. he had gotten fairly used to it. didn’t mean it was fair, but he knew how these things worked. what really sucked was that the new arthur was worse than the old one.

“eggsy grimaced. he didn’t know how to explain to harry—who seemed like he hadn’t been discriminated against a day in his life—that the new arthur kept giving him what amounted to suicide missions, and that he was currently bleeding out in a warehouse because of the deliberately bad intel she had given him.”

also featuring: dean is harder to get rid of than eggsy thought, his mum is going off the deep end, there are way too many nefarious plots in play, and eggsy is really beginning to wish that harry would stop holding his hand and kiss him instead.

note: look, i know i recced this literally less than a week ago but i ALSO stayed up til 5AM re-reading this last night and it was a-m-a-z-i-n-g. i was on a bit of a kingsman kick earlier this year, so i’ve actually re-read this fic TWICE so far in 2020. i will give you a serious warning in that this fic delves deep into domestic abuse through the lens of a variety of different relationships. it also explores the potential for abuse in hartwin, bc this fic is one of the few that actually commits to the fact that they’re literal spies who murder people. actively. a lot. but seriously, this fic is one of my fave in the fandom and i STRONGLY recommend it. 

waste of breath by bryrosea (1/1 | 22k+ | M) loganxveronica; canon compliant; missing scenes; navy; past child abuse

logan echolls, the nine years, and the navy.

note: bryrosea has an obscene number of amazing logan and veronica fics (her canon divergent series stay with me is another i re-read this year), but i’ve found myself returning to this fic a lot over the years. i’m a sucker for canon compliant fics that explore the missing scenes in between canon and this fic hits all the right buttons by diving deep into how logan echolls went from being a trash fire at hearst college at the end of s3 to being a decorated navy pilot by the movie. it explores logan seeking out therapy and making a life for himself that he can be proud of, all while pining after the girl who got away. and bc this author is amazing, she followed it up with a sequel from veronica’s point of view in the series done by only me.

note: i mean??? i don’t really know what to say except that this is one of the truly most beautiful fics i have ever read. it follows castiel through time as he meets different reincarnations of sam and dean across history and falls ever more deeply in love. it is achingly tender and so ecstatically written that i die just thinking about it. and that summary? i mean. holy fuck break my heart why don’t you? i don’t know how i missed out on this fic for so long since it was published in 2015 but i only learned about it for the first time back in july and it was. life changing?? when the fic finally reaches the canon timeline and he meets THIS dean it’s peak yearning. 10/10 will read again.

note: i read SO MANY of @elisela’s 911 fics this summer, which i loved, and then she got into teen wolf and started writing sterek and i just about died. this fic is amazing, one of my fave sterek AU’s that i’ve read in years. it’s just the right amount of drama and angst and fluff filled with all the joys of miscommunication and character relationships that makes reading sterek such a joy. reading this fic and finding out eli needed fic recs pushed me to dive back in to reading sterek fics for a bit this fall so i can say with the utmost authority that this is one of the best i’ve read in a long time.

note: again, this is the first in a 2 part series titled love me like you do that explores arya and gendry’s dynamics together through the point of view of her family. game of thrones ended last year with a whimper but i keep returning to the gendrya tag on ao3 to seek out new, amazing content and also to re-read some old favorites. i can’t remember if i came across this for the first time last year or this one, but i’ve read it and re-read it more times than i can count since and i love it more than i can describe. i’m a total sucker for outsider POV fics and my biggest pet peeve in canon is the fact that none of the stark’s ever found out that arya and gendry had a history together. this modern au fic almost makes up for it by giving me a gendry encounter with every family member and then the big reveal. it’s peak content.

What are some of your fave poems, quotes and/or song lyrics? :) what inspires you and gives you hope? :)

one of my favorite poems of all time, and one i am absolutely holding with me in my heart this holiday season, is Yom Kippur 1984 by adrienne rich. the opening line asks the question: “What is a Jew in solitude?” and the whole poem just cuts into my heart from there. the poem asks the questions: what is a people? what does it mean to be marginalized in the world that is? what is the world that could be? what is solitude and what does togetherness mean? 

it’s an astounding poem, one that is sadly still extremely relevant for being 30 years old, and i tear up every time i read it. i’d love to do a dramatic reading of it one day but it’s a little long for me to memorize. here’s my favorite stanza: 

“Find someone like yourself.   Find others.Agree you will never desert each other.Understand that any rift among youmeans power to those who want to do you in.Close to the center, safety; toward the edges, danger.But I have a nightmare to tell:   I am trying to saythat to be with my people is my dearest wishbut that I also love strangersthat I crave separatenessI hear myself stuttering these wordsto my worst friends and my best enemieswho watch for my mistakes in grammarmy mistakes in love.This is the day of atonement; but do my people forgive me?If a cloud knew loneliness and fear, I would be that cloud.”

another poem that has always stuck with me is ulysses by tennyson. here’s my favorite part:

one quote from a movie that gut punches me every time is actually from the mcu, believe it or not. it’s in winter soldier, a convo between natasha and steve. this quote just sort of ..... unfortunately sums up a lot of my survival instinct

as for lyrics, uuuh basically everything radical face has ever done? honestly, radical face is amazing, and i’m begging more people to check them out. they have three albums called “the family tree” that follows the generations of this fictional family (through falling in love, death, abuse, gaining magic, moving across the sea, hauntings ... it’s got it all) and they have a guide to it with behind the scenes on their website. radical face also has an EP called “therapy” that is about the awkward, muddy aftermath of trauma and it made me cry when i listened to it. if i could recommend lyrics from three of their songs it would be “everything costs”, “the ship in port” and “guilt”

Well English is my first and primary language and the only one I’m wholly fluent in, but I can understand German fairly well! I can kinda read it alright and understand what someone is saying but Do Not ask me to converse in it. I Will Die. I have retained a bit of Spanish and French from middle and high school which means [Kel Mitchell voice] I know some of these words!!

But I’ve wanting to learn Russian for some time !! My dad knows Russian and I’ve only picked up the odd phrase and sentence from him but I’d like to learn more !!

Oooooh, I gotta think about that one... it’s rlly hard to pin stuff down nowadays because What Does True Happiness Feel Like Again and uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh it’s been awhile !! But I’d say the leather jacket I got for my 18th birthday because my family doesn’t really have a whole lot of money so them to shell out that much for me meant a lot. And also seeing “Singin’ in the Rain” that day !! I got to see it in theaters and it was super nice and fun :^)

all of them r so good!! but im writing an app up for woolf right now as that’s the character who’s headspace i think i could tap into most and really unpack. jackson’s such a sweet character who i also considered applying for, and i lOVE miller but i don’t think i’d do them justice.

hey nathaniel! i've recently gotten interested in poetry (just got over the instinctive fear and suspicion school instilled in me lol) and i know this is very broad but could you recommend a few poets to start with? maybe talk about some of your faves, what the write about/like, and why you like them? if it helps, i just found two poems that i really like - if we must die and invictus. do you have any recs that are along those lines? sorry if this is rambly and have a good day!

i can’t rec you any specific to the poems you mentioned because you didn’t say who they’re by and i don’t know how to search for them! but i can absolutely name-drop some fave poets of mine :)

my particular poetic niche (as far as what i look for) is basically body poems with violent and/or religious imagery, + gayness if i can find it lmao. my top three longtime favorites have to be:

richard siken

no one writes romantic obsession the way he does. but he doesn’t just obsess over romance, he obsesses over everything, and the violence in his poems is echoed in the violence with which he writes; his poems feel like they are hurtling across the page, tearing through you before you even know what’s hit you. “sorry about the blood in your mouth. i wish it was mine” fucks me up all the time, as does “what is a ghost? something dead that seems to be alive. something dead that doesn’t know it’s dead”

margaret atwood

although well-known for her novels, atwood’s poetry is equally specific and disturbing as her other works. the way she writes about gender & bodies & the space one takes up feels both familiar and deeply unsettling at the same time. read her book two-headed poems if you can get your hands on it.

ada limón

limón’s poems soothe. her poetic voice is gentler than siken and atwood’s, although not because she’s any less desperate - she just takes her time about it, and that’s something i respect the hell out of. her poems tend to build as they go like the tide coming in. i love her book sharks in the river, and her poem “the quiet machine” is an all-time favorite.

(History!!!!) Eveyone was so damn happy on here! Willem-Alexander's investiture was probably one of the best times I've had in this fandom!-The Luxembourg royal wedding. Steph and Claire had like...the prettiest royal wedding gowns out of any princesses EVER. -Harry's 30th birthday, and all the documentaries that came out for the EVENT lol!-Prince George's Birth -The first Invictus Games!!!! I was sooooo proud of him, and so proud to see his family turn up to support him like every day! We got one of the most iconic photos from it! (William being a proud big brother and holding his baby bro!)-Carl Philip and Sofia's entire engagement and wedding. (God I love them so damn much and was so happy I got to witness this!!!)-Princess Charlene having TWINS!!!!-The media dropping the story that Meghan and Harry were dating. It was such a shock and we lost all our goddamn minds. Obviously their engagement and wedding are on the favorite list too. Also...-When Harry issued the statement defending Meghan from the press and the racism she had to face. "This is not a game, this is our lives." Whew lord. How iconic.

Could you talk to us about some of your favorite poets and/or poems? Where/when you first heard them, why they're among your favorites, that sort of thing?

I have such a weird relationship with poetry. I always felt like “oh, I’m just not that into poetry” but the thing is that I really am? Or really can be - when poetry hits me, really hits me where I live, it’s this intense shivery feeling of “oh, you did that” that I associate with very powerful art - music, visual, literature, all of it. 

Mary Oliver is one of the poets that I always come back to - so much of her poetry is...it’s about grace, and natural beauty, and finding peace in yourself. I first ran into her actually through the Episcopal Church I used to go to with my family - the lead musician really liked her poetry, and set “At Blackwater Pond” to music. (I wish I could share the song. I don’t think it’s recorded anywhere.)

And the way she uses language is just...I mean, I could probably analyze “Wild Geese” to hell and back talking about why it makes me cry a little every time I read it, but I don’t even know that I want to? It’s those thematics, I think. And now I’m going to quote “Wild Geese” at you:

You do not have to be good.You do not have to walk on your kneesFor a hundred miles through the desert, repenting.You only have to let the soft animal of your bodylove what it loves.

and I cry.

Another one is W.H. Auden, who I think I was introduced to because of my sister, but also at some point I ran into the poem “The Two”, or “The Witnesses” which if you read it you’ll recognize that I’ve used a bunch of lines from it for titles. It was such a weird, haunting, creepy poem and I love it. And then I read “As I Walked Out One Evening” and the imagery in that one is just...I love it, I really do. And also “Epitaph on a Tyrant”. He’s a very different poet, but his phrases stick in my head. I remember Auden lines even when I can’t remember what the hell poem they were from.

Then there’s Kahlil Gibran who I’m pretty sure came to me direct from @ameliarating and The Prophet is just one of the loveliest, most moving prose poems I’ve ever read. I need to go back and read the whole thing again. I made sort of a text-art thing of my favorite quote from it (which I’ve definitely referenced before):

You have been told that, even like a chain, you are as weak as your weakest link. This is but half the truth. You are also as strong as your strongest link.To measure you by your smallest deed is to reckon the power of the ocean by the frailty of its foam. To judge you by your failures is to cast blame upon the seasons for their inconstancy.

I know I’m not the only one who needs to hear that.

Last but not least on my “poets I actually know are faves by name” is T.S. Eliot, because “The Hollow Men” and “The Waste Land” are my jam, I don’t always like the modernists but when they’re all about broken shattered remnants in the aftermath of world-shattering events...yeah I’m into that. T.S. Eliot may be a dick but he did some cool stuff with words.

But then there are individual poems that I know that I love always - “Invictus”, for instance, or “Dirge Without Music”; “The Second Coming” by Yeats...or there’s one by Ursula K. LeGuin called “Ars Lunga” that I love...I mean, here is a list I wrote of poems that always make me feel feelings.

oh man thats a hard question, honestly first thought was watch and listen to RENT (the musical), read Shakespeare def (Sonnet 116 is my fave), Paramore, Pablo Neruda, read William Ernest Henley’s Invictus,listen to ‘Arrival of the Birds/Transformation’ by the Cinematic Orchestra which is imo one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever created
