final thoughts on the ilw finale: amalia edition (ch 23 spoilers below) @itlivesproject

In my humble opinion, Amalia x MC’s route is the most deserving of a Blood ending. No offense to the other LIs, but Ro only knew y’all for a month and you want them to give up being an all powerful entity??? (jk you’re still valid if you ended up going blood route w/ your respective LI lol) 

I had to remove my personal preference of having Rowan be half human/half Power and fully embrace their ties to humanity. My gameplay for Amalia’s route is unique in comparison to how I approached other LIs. Out of every LI, Amalia’s story was the only one I played with the intention of achieving the Blood route ending. (To prove my point: if I tried to rock with the Power in her route, Ro loses all their nerve lmaoo)

Why was I so determined to get a Blood ending? It all starts with a now very debunked theory I entertained on the genesis of Rowan. The theory being: what if Amalia was the one who brought Ro back from the dead? Dw, the clown makeup has already been applied- BUT it was a very interesting concept for me to explore and ultimately led me to pursue a Blood-centric route. It allowed me to view Rowan as a human who was given a second chance at life by his best friend. The alternative theory I had can be seen here:

Removing Amalia from the equation, these predictions follow the same thread of yearning for humanity. Oh, mortality. How intriguing you are. I’m gonna pat myself on the back for being half-right about the Power being drawn to human nature. It just wasn’t drawn to our dear Rowan specifically. Admittedly, if my theories were true, it would’ve placed an unfair preference over Amalia’s love story. Coming back from the dead just so you could stay with your best friend for a little longer? Their love story can’t be that epic lol. Plus, we wouldn’t have gotten all that sweet lore. Or meet Mama Loha. Or get to see this scene:

Ghost!Rowan: Though I’ve gotta say, I was pretty surprised about us and Amalia. Or I guess I should say you and Amalia.

Rowan: What do you mean? Weren’t you in love with her, too?

Ghost!Rowan: *shakes his head with a smile* Nope. That was all you.

A small weight Rowan never noticed was there lifts off their chest as they realize with full certainty that while much of who they are was siphoned from the ghost in front of you, the love they have for Amalia is theirs. All theirs.

This exchange between ghost!Ro and... the other Ro (lol) is special when you compare it to the other reactions you can get with the LIs. For instance, here’s Abel’s: 

Ghost!Rowan: And I’ve gotta admit, I’m a little jealous of you and that cute professor guy, He’s a cutie, and a sweetheart. I don’t think I ever could’ve landed someone like him

Rowan: You mean Abel?

Ghost!Rowan: Yeah, that’s the one. Congrats by the way.

Rowan can’t help but laugh.

Rowan: Thanks. 

There’s no sigh of relief seen in Abel’s route (or the others I’m assuming). Not like in Amalia’s. Why? Let’s take a look at a couple of scenes:

Amalia’s romance route really has the potential to have the sweetest or most heart wrenching conclusion 😭😭😭 but let me get back on track before I spiral too much over Lia’s shadow ending 

Out of everyone in the gang, Amalia is the only member who knew Rowan when they were human. This fact brings a point of contention between the pair that is touched on numerous times. The reveal of Ro’s true nature has the most impact on Amalia because not only does she have to come to terms with her best friend’s death, she needs to decide how this ‘new’ Ro will fit into her life. Her faith in Rowan is determinant on a player’s choice to fix her college records/telling her the truth. Refusal to do either pushes her over the edge- and  eliminates any possibility to advance Rowan’s relationship with her. How could they when she sees them as the reason her life’s goals are put on an indefinite pause- a Power creature wearing the mask of her dead best friend. 

While Amalia does come to accept Rowan for who they are now, what draws her back in is their display of humanity, despite not being exactly who she once knew. 

Amalia: “It was you, not the first Rowan, who planned my twenty-first birthday party. It was you who cheered me up after I got my first C on a college test. It was you who sent me care packages and you who was always there for me. And I realized that even if you aren’t the same person I knew in middle and high school, these past few years were real, and... I care about you Rowan. Not just the person whose body you were put into.” 

This kindness would have been overlooked by her had Rowan leaned into their more selfish desires. 

Rowan’s battle with their identity is consistent throughout every possible timeline you can create for them. Their memories with Amalia- are they really theirs? How can they claim to be Amalia’s best friend when they aren’t sure which memories are real THEY WERE LEMON DROPS As someone who is at odds over who they are, finding out that their love is truly theirs is nothing short of special.

Characterizing Rowan as I did, it feels only fitting that they choose to become human at the end. It’s also extremely heartwarming to know that Ro x Amalia get to walk through life together, as they always have, for as long as they can. Their epilogue gives domestic housewife realness and I 👏 am 👏 here 👏 for  👏 it  👏 Cook them meals, Ro lmaoo If that’s not enticing enough- there’s also this- we get to see ILW’s best bone doggo, Moss, one last time. That alone made this finale satisfying as hell. The love story I have woven for these two is tooth-achingly sweet, and the ending is even sweeter. I mean, look at this:

I’m still convinced that this is the reason PD made them siblings. They’re too easy to ship otherwise. But I also feel that they want to ship them, too, so they sort of shot themselves in the foot with that.

It’s a lot of fun to see how other people interpret the series! It can be frustrating too, at times, but it’s mostly so much fun because it’s not really that serious. And a lot of readers have really good thoughts and insights that I would never have thought of. As long as it stays fun and respectful, I’ve loved getting asks of people just going off with their thoughts and interpretations.

Ooooo, okay! DN actually ticked a lot of boxes for me. I’ve touched on it before but no harm in going over it again.

I think the main thing I enjoy in any piece of entertainment is layers.

I really enjoyed the dual timeline aspect.

This is one of my favorite tools of storytelling. I love when the story starts in the middle and then takes us back and forth to tell the story. We get to watch everything unfold in layers instead of a straight shot. Don’t tell it to me straight, make me piece it together.

Friendship groups

I love strong friendship groups/dynamics. There’s been a rise in the core “3-4 Boys Rule the school” trope, and those don’t always hit with me, so it’s not that.

How relationships between people in the group grow and develop at different rates, and how different types of people show love in different ways, and how people band together to cover another’s area of weakness.

There’s a few quotes from Devil’s Night that I feel really hit on why this is interesting to me, but I ran across one the other day from Fire Night. Talking about Damon (who else, really?) Kai says,

“God, I hated him. I mean, I definitely jump off a bridge for him, but…”

It just drives me crazy wondering why? And I love that.

I’m debating on what a third thing was. I think the other two things hooked me enough to keep me reading, but…

The writing wasn’t terrible all the time. I loved Thunder Bay as a concept, and I think I was really hoping that the books would lean more into a crime/heist plot than they did. I remember in Conclave when Rika was like “but we’re not criminals” I was really disappointed.

They are criminals, and I wanted them to own it and do something with it. In my head, that’s were I would have taken the story. I don’t really care how they ended up in jail. They played with the law, they faced the consequences. The lesson they should have learned was be better criminals. Instead, we focused on how traumatizing that was for them, which… okay I guess.

I mean, overall the story caught me. If it wasn’t for Willemmy high school, I probably wouldn’t still be around. But I loved them so much that I sort of built up what I did enjoy and wish had taken place over the pieces that I didn’t really care for. A lot of what I talk about is just headcanon, but that’s okay. That’s what I use fandom for.

Looking back on all of my gifs and such from this year made me feel... a range of emotions, baha. For one, I was shocked to see I had posted more than like 100 sets😂, I almost cracked 300 this year and it really didn’t feel like I’d been that active asdfghjkl. I also felt a bit nostalgic coming across certain sets that reminded me of past times, both the good times and the bad. There were a lot of bad times this year that bts and creating helped me cope with and escape from, and I’m very grateful to that. And above all, I was oddly really proud to see my works evolve from what they were when I first came back to present. I used to really hate my own content, and I mean I still joke about it a lot, but this year in review made me realize I actually do have some nice thoughts about most of them. I’m glad I pushed through and worked hard to improve my knowledge and skills to the point I’m mostly content with my creations. However, I will continue denying the existence of any of my sets before VS, even if a few are listed here. I believe i deleted the worst one’s though, lmaoo, which means that from January to March I don’t have any sets to put down👀. 

And as a special little note, I want to thank anyone who has ever supported my content, sent asks or left tags/compliments on my sets. some of you leave the sweetest, most simp-worthy words on my sets I could cry. It really makes me so happy that my content is enjoyed by you guys. this whole bts tumblr community is so kind and welcoming and encouraging, I’m so glad I came back to tumblr and discovered bts and all of you lovely people. I love you guys.❤️

🌻 - October ↳ Most popular: jimin being adorable as usual (2.8k notes) this set is actually my second favourite of the month, very close behind my true favourite. i’m really proud of the colour isolation i did with this set, it took a lot of time and patience with my old nemesis camera raw filter. it’s not my usual colouring style I don’t think but i like it a lot. ↳ Favourite: jimin’s birthday set  i really like the colouring and consistency of this set. of course it’s not perfect, but i feel like i did better on this set than previous ones? Idk. it’s also one of my biggest comps, or my biggest comp, i’m not sure. it took a lot of effort regardless and i’m very happy with it and all the pain it caused my followers.❤️

🌻 - November ↳ Most popular: osaka live jimin (1.7k notes) i think i squeezed this set in in-between aggressive note taking and several mental breakdowns lmaoo. the quality is poopy bUT he’s still hot so i like this set. osaka jimin has a special place in my heart. ↳ Favourite(s): jimin from the 211128 vlive // jimin giggling and hurting my heart  the vlive set would be my #1 favourite if the dark times of tumblr grain hadn’t come for it, i did quite like the colouring of it before posting😭. the butter set though... the audacity, really. for him to look like that and still manage to be adorable. i think the balance of red and yellow i accomplished with this set is why it’s my second favourite. usually reds and yellows are the bane of my existence but i feel like i did well on this set.

🌻 - December ↳ Most popular: jimin gq korea photoset (5k notes) this isn’t a gif set or even an edit, but it’s my most popular post of this month so decided to include it. i will say i was shocked to see it get so much attention👁️👄👁️. it’s valid though, that photoshoot came for all of our throats and i will think about it until the day i die.👍 ↳ Favourite(s): jimin’s deep af thoughts // jimin in that fit for vogue again, i really like the colour isolation i did with that 7fates set, his lips be poppin’, and for once i have a font i actually like for captions bahaha, only took me 9 months to find. but the vogue set though....😳 i could talk about that look for hours, my gosh, he was so stunning... but anYWAYS, i love how the reds came out in that set and i really like how dark and saturated the gifs look. it really was a hassle to colour isolate and make them somewhat consistent, but it was worth it and i’m very proud of the final product overall.

Oh bestie I’ve been waiting for this ask you have no idea what you’ve just unleashed

Ok so first of all, let me preface with the fact that I read the first three out of the six books in the series so I’m not going into this blind with no context and this is not a just a movie review but an overview of the “duniverse” if you will. I’m also going to try to do this with the least amount of spoilers possible in case people haven’t read the books or seen the movie yet!

So, I read the first book, didn’t love it for reasons I’ll get into later, but decided to read the next book because I am an avid reader and I don’t like leaving a series unfinished, especially when I’m interested enough in the story. The second book was my favorite out of the ones I read but was still just … not very good ??? And then the third one truly was … a book. I stopped reading after that because the story was so weird and the writing was so bad that I was literally getting zero enjoyment out of reading them.

When it comes to the first book, it felt very much like the author came up with this cool universe with complex politics and theories and wanted to share that with people but then said oh shit … if I want to write a book I need a plot ???? And so kind of just threw something together that ended up becoming what the series became. I say this because the first book is like 700 pages long with about 600 of those pages JUST being exposition and world building and the remainder being the actual … story. There is so much shit just thrown at you and the way its framed, to you know relate to the plot, is that each 50 page explanation for something is paired with about 3 lines of dialogue from a character you don’t care about and will likely never see again.

There are just so many fucking WORDS in this book that just don’t matter to anyone other than the author because not only are these concepts just not worth remembering, they’re also layered under writing that becomes so dense and complex it ends up being almost illegible. It’s disappointing because, as I said before, the story is actually interesting but you don’t even get to it unless you either read the book multiple times or really spend time trying to parse out what all the words you’re reading actually mean. I think Dune falls under the myth that “complicated/dense writing is what ‘good’ or ‘more adult’ writing looks like” when in reality it really just turns off a majority of readers and does not necessarily make for a readable book. The only group of people that I can see enjoying this story are pretentious white dudebros and guess what, Dune literally invented what modern day sci-fi spaces look like where the vast majority of its participants are DING DING DING!!!

Now, the second book had a lot more plot and a more coherent story than the first book and you start to feel more connected to the characters, which is why I liked it the most. That being said, just because a plot was more evident does not necessarily mean that the plot was good 😗 The biggest problems with this book were, one, the writing style of the author that continues into the second book, and two, the plot starts getting weird and confusing and REALLY takes a nose-dive into weird and confusing in the third book.

And now that I’ve talked about my issues with the writing style, we can get into why the actual writing (ie. the plot and characters) was also terrible ☺️

First of all, it must be taken into account that Dune was written by a middle-aged white man in the 1960s and, for the time period, I have to say that the author, Frank Herbert, was pretty ahead of his time. That being said, being ahead of your time for the 60s is still a V E R Y low bar to get over and there are still a whole host of issues that make the time period of the writing very clear - the first being how gender is discussed and plays a part in the story.

I actually took notes while I was reading Dune because I read it for a book club and one of the first notes I wrote was “Wait so ……. Women are truth sayers but they somehow still need a male savior ……… interesting premise.” This same issue also crosses over to the problems with race relations prevalent in the book, where the indigenous population of Arrakis (the planet this series is set) are all strong characters in their own right, but they still somehow need a white savior. This is why I mentioned before that the author was ahead of his time in being able to write strong female and minority characters, but the bar is still in HELL. And the author gets so close too, to realizing that this story shouldn’t be about Paul being the savior of the universe because that’s not what his character wants, but just because Paul doesn’t see himself as or want to be a white male savior doesn’t mean he doesn’t end up being one. Like literally the whole plot of the book is supposed to be about the wrongs of imperialism, corruption, and false gods and that how even if you can literally see the future, you’re still trapped in a world you have no real control over, but all that gets buried under the convoluted and confusing writing, so all most people will take away from it is ‘lets do drugs in the desert’ ajdlkahsdjfklh like ???

I only really came to the conclusions of what these books are actually ABOUT when I like fully sat down to parse out what truly happened in the books - the average reader will not be doing a full fucking literary analysis of your work to even understand what it was about and THAT is 100% my biggest gripe with books like these. Where there is actually a good message hidden in there somewhere but that message is not accessible to a general audience without someone having to sit down and write a book report. A very good chunk of your general audience will not have the time or energy to do that, and if that’s the only way people can consume your story, you might as well not write the story at all.

Not even getting into other issues with the plot of the book surrounding homophobia, fat phobia, and other similar tropes that were prevalent at the time this book was written, overall I just don’t think that Dune accomplished what the story was meant to accomplish because of what I spoke about above. The movie was surprisingly good in that it takes the plot of the first half of the book and makes it digestible, but even then some of the major points and explanations were left out. I guess there’s only so much that can be shown on screen before it ends up being 30 minutes of narration explaining the universe, which is the major downfall of the book. Anyway, I’m interested to see what part two will look like although I know the actual plot gets significantly worse from here on out. I don’t have very high hopes for it.

Community question: What is a beta and how do people find them?

Hi guys! I think this is my first time posting in this subreddit. I've got a question that has baffled me the entire time I have been in fandom: I've never really grasped the concept of a beta. I've read a lot of fanfiction, and I've had a small go at writing some but all I know about betas is they help edit work sometimes??

How do people find betas? Are they usually friends of the author who proofread it sometimes? Are they like co-authors? How involved are they in the writing process? Do people just ask their friend to do it or is there some beta marketplace? lol. I'm not sure if I want a beta, but I always wonder if my writing could be better if someone read through it before I posted.... Please tell me if this is a stupid question 😗
