Even 1991's Hook showed that Jack and Peter fell for the allure of Neverland while Maggie never forgot and just wanted to go home. Implying, the way 2003's Peter Pan outright said, girls are much too clever. Disney is stomping all over this story.

Listen to me, Hook is a genius Peter Pan adaptation/reimagining. In so many ways. I know as a film, it apparently had its disappointments, but just speaking as a Peter Pan fan (of the book and the play), whatever Jim Hart/Nick Castle were doing when they were making story decisions for that movie, it worked. I could gush.

I'm going to gush. This is going to be long. If you like Peter Pan, keep reading.

Disney is stomping all over the story with their new movie in so many ways. And Peter Pan 2003 is an almost one-to-one, 108% accurate adaptation of the original book/play, so I'm gonna talk about that in regards to Hook- First of all, yes, the whole Maggie thing is SO smart and SO accurate to how Barrie chose to portray women in general in the original story. All the major female characters have their silly, petty, foolish moments like real women of all ages do, yes, but when Barrie portrays what's naturally good about good women, he knocks it out of the park. Wendy is selfless and compassionate, Tink dies for someone she loves, Mrs. Darling is a graceful nurturer and her husband's rock. Like, when Barrie uses Peter to say "girls are too clever to fall out of their prams", that's not just Peter being manipulative, that's the kind of thing Barrie really thought about females. It's in all of his plays and all of his books. He doesn't ignore women's general faults, but he does love to showcase why it's not good for man to be alone. In the original story, when you're in the Neverland, the longer you stay there, the less you remember of your life on the mainland. John and Michael just totally forget they ever had real parents and start acting like Wendy, who is playing pretend, is their only mother figure. Wendy is realizing she's forgetting real life too, and makes it a nightly thing to tell all the boys the same story - of how they got to Neverland and how they're eventually gonna go back, and why, and how their real mother specifically will always be waiting for them and she has no doubt about that because that's real love. And that's what Hook is about, second of all. Peter forgets who he used to be as a child, and it's actually normal for Peter to forget important things - finite memory in an infinite existence - but this is him forgetting who he is. And that's a big deal because he forgets not only what it was like to be young and what he personally was missing (parents, a family, the gaping hole in his magical life that created a lack of consistent real love), but he forgets what made him as a character the hero of the story. As sword-fighting leader of the Lost Boys, Peter Pan was confident, honorable, and unafraid.

This is who Peter Pan is. He's selfish and arrogant and kind of a butt sometimes (like little boys often are) but the thing that makes him special isn't that he can fly or never age (though those things are cool). The other Lost Boys can fly and don't age, either, in the original story. Peter is a born leader. Peter protects the Lost Boys. Peter doesn't kill a pirate while he's sleeping; he waits for the guy to wake up. Peter won't strike Hook while he's unarmed and tries to help him up onto solid ground in the middle of a fight before continuing the duel because that's the right thing. Peter won't keep a girl in Neverland against her will. Peter lets the kite take Wendy to safety and sits wounded on a rock alone, waiting to die without being scared. Peter Pan is a hero. Peter Banning forgot all of that. Peter Banning doesn't remember what it's like to be young, or to want parents, or to crave real love. He doesn't remember that to die will be an awfully big adventure. He's terrified of death. He's terrified of heights. He's scared of everything. He doesn't protect his kids or care about their interests or watch when they're putting on a play or attend a single baseball game or spend any time with them at all. The one thing Peter Pan had to be forever barred from, Peter Banning got to have - a family - and he forgets what it feels like not to have that and neglects them. So Jack gets to Neverland and is scared (and manipulated by pirates, the thing his great-grandmother before him went through and never fell for), and he's spent his young life craving the attention and affection of his workaholic Peter Banning dad and never gets it, literally watches Peter give up on saving him and Maggie because he's too scared (Peter Pan never gave up) and that hurts, so of course he starts forgetting who he is and where he came from because that's easier and he's his father's son. But Maggie!! is Wendy's great-granddaughter!!! and like the other women in the Peter Pan canon, she doesn't forget for one second who she is or where they came from or what's important, and she knows the pirates are bad and Peter is good, and she knows her family loves her, and she knows her dad loves her, and even though she watched Peter give up too, she begs Jack not to forget and tries actively to remind him of the truth. She rejects the pirate life. She never loses faith. She's just a little kid but she's polite and she's a good girl and she won't do what mommy said not to even in Neverland. Wendy wrote "dirty pig" on the greasy windows of the Jolly Roger because she wasn't scared of pirates and she was disgusted that grown men never took care of business on that ship and it was filthy. Maggie is cut of the same cloth, just much younger on her first trip to Neverland.

LisTEN. There are no girls in the Lost Boys because GIRLS in the Peter Pan canon have something that little boys don't right away, because girls are different from boys. Girls are naturally more in touch with emotions. Girls are often (not always) more mature. They understand things little boys sometimes (not always) don't understand. Girls are sometimes (not always) smarter than boys in certain areas. Girls are much too clever to fall out of their prams, and girls don't forget what's important and that they must grow up someday, and girls - mothers - will always keep the window open for their children. There are no girls in the Lost Boys! DEAL WITH IT. It's OKAY.

Hook is amazing. It takes little details in the margins and paragraphs of Barrie's story and incorporates them in this one zany film. It takes some of the clearest messages and themes in the book and yells it through a megaphone. "Don't forget the great things about being a child! Don't forget what true love is! Don't forget why it's necessary to grow up! Don't forget what's bad about staying a kid forever! Grow up, but keep the childlike faith and the childlike confidence and remember what kids need, and give those things to your own children!"

Hook says this stuff with Tootles. It says it with Rufio. It says it with Jack and with Maggie in two different outcomes. It says it most of all with Peter. 

I LOVE HOOK. I watch it all the time, especially on rainy days. I will die on this hill. Go watch it. It's on HBO Max and you can watch it free right here with no ads you're welcome, and I myself own two copies of it on DVD just in case.

55. The Suka Rahasya Upanishad, “The Exploration of the Mysteries of Happiness.”

The Suka Rahasya Upanishad was written circa 800 BCE to 100 BCE. It is numbered 55 of 108.

In 54, we uncover the Mysteries of Male Emissions, prior to that, in the Sarva Sara Upanishad, the Mystery of God’s Essence, before that, the Mystery of Self-Discovery.

The message in this series is “Grace, the most masculine quality, is the vehicle to affectionate contact with other persons, whose love we need if we are to realize the Self and be happy.”

The Upanishad opens with a conversation between a gathering, the great poet, Vyasa who wrote the Bhagavad Gita, the god Brahma, Shiva, and the sage Suka.

Suka, happiness, translates as the opposite of duhkha, which is punishment, and can be achieved, as Lord Shiva says, not by anything religious.

Conversations between the Big Guys, like Brahma and Shiva are not uncommon, but how literally they should be taken is up to the student. The sages who wrote the Upanishads used conversations between real and mythical persons to illustrate their ideas, expecting an eventual reality check, the dissolution of all imaginary beings into the Present Reality.

Even still, I find it exhilarating to suspend disbelief for a few moments and listen to what these bizarre-looking, but infinitely wise characters have to say.

Om ! May He protect us both together; may He nourish us both together;

May we work conjointly with great energy,

May our study be vigorous and effective;

May we not mutually dispute (or may we not hate any).

Om ! Let there be Peace in me ! Let there be Peace in my environment ! Let there be Peace in the forces that act on me !

1-19. Now we expound the Rahasya Upanishad: the divine sages, worshipping Brahma, asked: Lord, tell us the Rahasya Upanishad.

He said, ‘In the past Vyasa, the treasure of all Vedas and penance asked Shiva: O Lord of great wisdom, who has vowed firmly to break the bondage (of life). The time has come to give initiation to my son Suka into the sacrament of Veda’.

Shiva said, ‘When the sole Brahman is imparted by me, your son will depart by himself having got detachment’. Vyasa said: Be it as it may; in the Upanayana, when Brahman is imparted, may my son become omniscient very quickly and get the four kinds of Moksha.

Then Shiva, hearing this sat in a divine seat to give instruction.

Suka, the fortunate, came there with devotion and getting the Pranava, spoke again to Shiva.

Suka aid, ‘First among gods, all-knowing, be pleased. The supreme Brahman, inherent in Om, has been imparted; the special sense 'That Thou Art' etc., with the six limbs, I desire to hear’.

Shiva said, ‘Well said, O treasure of knowledge, you have asked for the desirable, the mystery of the Vedic texts, named Rahasyopanishad with the six parts, knowing which one shall be directly released.

The texts without the six parts one should not teach. Just as Upanishads are the crown of the Vedas, so is the Rahasya of Upanishads.

For the wise man who meditates upon Brahman, holy spots, Vedic rites and mantras are useless. One wins a hundred years of life, meditating the sense of major texts. The same is won, uttering this once.’

So the son of the Creator, happiness and comfort, Suka, goes off to Veda School to receive instruction on how to be free of bondage to sin. For this, he is introduced to Shiva, the God of Kindness.

Shiva says freedom is of four types, and takes place during a Sixfold Path. He adds we should need no more and no less and the quest, if ye be wise, is undertaken at once. An optimist, Shiva says one should not need to make multiple attempts at forgoing the need to sin.

 For this goal to be accomplished, He says meditation is requisite, religious claptrap is off limits. The Skanda Upanishad, narrated by the god Kartik, Shiva’s son, the same that became Krishna on earth says:

Owing to the waxing of the Internal organ, what is not spiritual appears as such; by its warning, this is nothing but pure knowledge or Hari [the end of suffering]. I am knowledge alone, unborn – what more ? All that is other (than) It is inert and perishes like a dream. He who discerns the consciousness as distinct from the inert is the unswerving mass of knowledge. Only he is Shiva, Hari, luminary of luminaries, the supreme god, the Brahman – I am that Brahman [Purified Supreme Soul] surely.

To end the dream and begin the process of discernment, Shiva says:

20. Om, for this mantra, Hamsa [non-violence] is the Rishi [the sage], unmanifest Gayatri is the metre, deity is Paramahamsa, Hamsa is the seed, Sama-Veda is the power. ‘I am That’ is the pin.

=knowledge of how to be still, non-violent, supremely in charge of oneself establishes harmony and rhythm in life. Gayatri “the order of the house” is referred to both as the principal that encases this and also the mantra:

OM bhur buva swaha

Tat Savitur vareenyam

Bhago devasya dheemahi

Dheeyo yonah prachodayaat.

“Homage to the Supreme Soul, who resides in the sky and in the earth, is the friend to all,

May he enlighten our minds as easily as the sun rises in the east,

May all be secure, may He answer this prayer.”

Its application is in the context of uttering the major text to secures the grace of the Paramahamsa.  ‘Truth, knowledge, infinity is Brahman.

Bow to the thumbs, ‘Eternal joy is Brahman’ – Svaha [to embellish with blessings] to the index fingers. ‘Brahman is eternal joy, mostly’ – Vasat [the dwelling] to the middle fingers.

‘That which is plenitude’ – Hum  [I am] to the ring fingers.

‘The lord of plenitude’ – Vasat to the little fingers. ‘One and non-dual is Brahman. Phat [a proclamation]’ to the inside and outside of the palms.

‘Truth, knowledge, infinity is Brahman’ – Phat to the inside and outside of the palm. ‘Truth, knowledge, infinity is Brahman – bow to the heart’. ‘Eternal bliss is Brahman’ – Svaha to the head – Vasat to the braid of hair.

‘That which is plenitude’ – Hum to armour – Vausat to the three eyes. ‘One and non-dual Brahman’ – Phat to the missile.

The earth, old region, heaven, Om, this is the link of space.

Bosses of China Town

Banana Fish has a lot of awesome characters but I want to talk about the China Town gang bosses. I was originally going to talk about just Shorter, but he’s one of those characters who took a back seat until shortly before his own death. So I figured I could talk about Sing as well just to extend things a bit. Also I strongly disagree with the Sing is just another Shorter Wong, argument because these two have very different mindsets.

Shorter Wong is first introduced in the Short story “Angel Eyes” the first shot we get of him is Shorter writing his sister Nadia a letter. Ash is brought to the juvenile detention center and Shorter is assigned the responsibility of watching him. “That’s why I wanna put him in Block A with you. You got things under control over there” (pg. 45). This line from the guy in charge tells us Shorter has some authority over the other guys and deals with situations before things get out of hand. From the get go Shorter is presented as a leader who handles things before they get out of control.

Shorter’s first impulse is to try to be friendly towards Ash showing him around while warning the other guys not to try anything when they cat call Ash. “I’m supposed to look after you here, so you need any help with stuff or whatever shoot” (pg. 51). This shows that Shorter takes his responsibility towards Ash very seriously. It’s also kind of interesting how Shorter doesn’t like him at first referring to Ash as a brat in his head and even feeling wary of him. When two guys get into a fight over who gets to claim Ash. Shorter ends the fight by saying “You can duke it out with me Frankie” judging by the fact the guys back off, Shorter is not the kind of guy you want to fight. He also mentions Frankie tried to sexually assault him but Shorter fought him off emphasizing that he’s a good fighter.

There’s also a bit of a duel personality since Shorter tells Ash to let Frankie rape him but thinks about how practical or not this is awful advice and feels ashamed of saying this. “But his eyes said if you can’t or won’t help me, keep your big mouth shut and leave me alone!”(pg. 67). Shorter’s ability to realize Ash is a rape victim show he’s perceptive and suggests he has been exposed to these kinds of stories numerous times. Shorter even casually asks if Ash was arrested for child prostitution. He also tells off the guys for trying to obtain Ash even though he told Ash to just let it happen. This shows Shorter can’t bring himself to let Ash get raped again. Later Ash challenges Frankie and defeats him easily later he tells Shorter he got the idea to challenge the other guy because of him “I didn’t decide to go easy on him but I know how thanks to you” (pg. 83). Ash informs Shorter. This causes Shorter to become rather scared of Ash.

Later its revealed Ash faked sexual interest in one of the other juvie boys to find out if Frankie was actually an assassin sent to kill him. Shorter calls him out for being a user to which Ash gets testy and reminds the other boy Ricardo wanted to use him for sex. Shorter retorts with “Don’t play games with people’s feelings! Cuz if you do that- you’re no different from those assholes you hate!” (108). this seems to be something Ash kind of forgets later on, but this exchange causes Ash to reveal his honest feelings about being objectified, which Shorter listen’s to. I know fans get wrapped in how special Eiji is to Ash and I’m not denying that however Eiji was not the first person to treat Ash with kindness, it was actually Shorter who was the first person to treat Ash like a person. Shorter was the first guy who listened to Ash and dared call him out.

“Angel Eyes” characterizes Shorter as the kind of guy who tries to be practical, but due to his compassion often goes against what makes sense in favor of what he believes is right. This trait of Shorter’s shows up again in Banana Fish vol 4. It’s revealed here that Shorter works under the Chinese Mafia. Hua lee asks Shorter to spy on Ash and his group. “Forget it Ash is my friend and I don’t stab my friends in the back!” (146 pg.) he declares. However, Shorter does agree to work with the Lee’s because Hua gets in his head. “Beautiful words but remember Ash is a white punk and you and I share the same proud heritage” (146). This is important because it seems to imply Shorter’s has a misplaced sense of nationalism.

This is further elaborated on in a conversation between Yut Lung and Shorter, where Yut reminds Shorter of the bloody history of the Chinese families in power. “Often of their own relatives their own children our ancestors in the ruling family of the Ching Dynasty committed murder and assassination” (153). As I stated in my previous piece “The Flying Boy and the Snake” Yut often acts as a guide that encourages other characters to look at the less pleasant aspects of their situation. This suggests that Shorter views his own cultural heritage and the Chinese Mafia in an idealized way. He does not see the complexities of a very complicated cultural history with both good and bad points. Shorter’s idealization is further emphasized by him telling Yut they like Eiji “Because he’s innocent and honest” which is actually a really simplistic view of who Eiji is as a person.

Shorter’s reaction is to pull a knife on Yut because once he finds out the Lee’s are working for Dino his image of them shatters. “I was raised to respect you! To look up to the Lee family” (180). It’s implied that Shorter and his family as American immigrants wanted to view someone as being on their side. “It’s because of the Lee Family that we can be safe here. That we can live and put down roots in this feign soil because the Lee’s are here to protect us” Shorter laments. Though Shorter, Banana Fish seems to express a kind of wary ness towards the idea of complete loyalty to one’s own kind at the expense of everyone else. The Mob is the mob and cultural heritage doesn’t erase that Banana Fish argues. “You’re no better than Papa Dino! Just another Mob! Leeches who live off the blood of others” (181) Shorter declares. These are the kinds of loyalties that bind gangs and mafia together blood, and where you come from your ethnicity from are often manipulation tactics used by those in power to control and use others to their benefit.

Shorter despite dying horribly does so because he goes against what he was taught for the first time in his life. “I’ll protect Eiji with my own life. I won’t let them hurt him”(pg. 31) Shorter declares in vol 5. Trying to protect Eiji no matter how fruit ness it seems is all he can do at this point. While he ultimately fails to shelter Eiji and has him forcefully snatched from his arms. This does show that Shorter has learned the hard way to place friendship above nationalism.

Though unintentionally or not there’s still kind of a flawed ideology in the fact Shorter vows to an unconscious Eiji he’ll kill him to preserve his innocence. “If Dino tries to make you into his pet I’ll take you out before you know what’s happening” (69). Shorter has more traditional values and maybe that’s the point. Shorter’s death maybe a symbolic representation of older pro mafia attitudes rooted in nationalism and blood ties dying out.

After a couple of re watches and rereads of the manga, I realized Sing had to be brought in because despite being Shorter’s successor. Sing Soo ling does things differently from Shorter. Sing offers to team up with Ash’s former gang members to take Dino’s manor. “Our suits did a deal with Dino Golzine but that’s got nothing to do with us” (pg. 179). While Shorter idealized the Lee’s, Sing refers to them as the suits viewing them as a kind of beaurcracy whose dealings are far removed from his gang.

He also shows himself to be more practical then Shorter wanting to actually make a plan before attacking Golzine’s manor. “We’re here to rescue our respective bosses. If we don’t know where we can attack from and how to get out we’ll just die like dogs. And I sure as hell don’t plan on committing mass suicide with you guys” (pg. 50). Sing informs them. Later when he’s told Ash killed Shorter, Sing wants to wait to hear Ash out and receive an explanation. When Ash won’t give him one Sing reverts to rules of the street and tries to take him out.

Later when Sing joins Yut in his helicopter he admits they only reason he put up with the Lee’s bossing them around was out of respect for Shorter. “Because we’re sick and tired of em that’s why! The old guys and all their deals (172). In contrast to Shorter who in Yut’s own words respected his elders. Sing has a disgust for a traditional older generation who he finds oppressive due to their backroom deals that screw people like him and Shorter over.

It’s also of note how Sing behaves towards Yut in contrast to Shorter. While Shorter agreed to obey Yut because of his name and showed subservience towards him at first. His protégée flat out questions Yut a lot. “Or do you just think the lower class doesn’t need know?”(128). In Vol 9 Sing tells Yut “Look I know you saved before but that doesn’t mean you can tell me what to do with it (Pg. 74). Sing is fine working with Yut but he doesn’t want to be his lackey and makes that very clear. When Yut is taken hostage by Eiji in vol 10. Sing goes after them in contrast to Yut’s bodyguard who yells that he’s going against master’s orders. Sing chooses to save rather than obey by going after them. “In case you never noticed I don’t take orders from him!”(pg. 18).

However Sing shares Shorter’s sense of compassion when he realizes Yut wants Eiji to shoot him he tries to communicate with him only to be shut out and told to leave. Sing responds by saying “Easy to say, harder to do” (pg. 31). This implies he doesn’t want to leave Yut but realizes that Eiji is running around a dangerous neighborhood at night and that takes priority. Sing saves Eiji from attempted rapists and nurses him back to health, giving him a safe place to stay. He also saves Yut again later on from an assassin even after he’s cut ties with him.

In vol 13 Sing later follows in Shorter’s footsteps by going against Yut when he finds out he’s working with Golzine. “ If your going to keep up this little partnership of yours- I might end up giving that Japanese kid some backup”(pg. 95). However, it’s not so much a sense of morals it’s more of a street code. If Yut wasn’t working with the guys who killed Shorter I honestly doubt Sing would care. “ Golzine’s the one who was giving Arthur orders and he’s the one who gave Shorter that drug”(pg. 95) Sing emphasizes. I just want to point out it’s not a conflict of morality but one of interests between the two of them. Sing likes Yut but he has obligations as boss to avenge Shorter. Sing’s role as boss often conflicts with his personal feelings. He is obligated to fight Ash to avenge Shorter in the eyes of his gang and must perform this function. Yet its clear Sing does not want to fight Ash not only because he doesn’t want to die but as Sing tells Lao in vol 14 “ The only one who can keep a lid on the downtown turf is Ash got that!” (pg. 53). Sing is the out of all the main bosses the one who thinks of the bigger picture beyond revenge and basic power plays.

Sing is much more concerned with the safety of his gang. Later in vol 15 he wakes up at Ash’s hideout and his first concern is his guys even though Sing himself is injured. “ Because it ain’t your buddies that’re gonna be skinned alive!”(pg. 117). This takes priority for him over who has the most power or pursuit of revenge. Unlike the Lee’s Sing cares about his own people even though it’s never at the expense of other individuals. This is what turns him aginst Yut since the other boy targets others out of jealousy. However unlike Ash, Sing does not pursue revenge in the end. As depicted in vol 16, when Ash gives Sing an out not to fight him Sing takes it. He also can’t bring himself to shoot Yut lung in vol 18 despite his betrayal. “ Cuz your hurt your soul’s bleeding even now”(174) Sing says.

Interestingly enough, Sing claims he too is responsible for the invasion of China Town “ But the bad blood between us created an opening for the Vietnamese and Arbs and I guess that’s my fault as well as yours”(171). This suggests that Banana Fish lays the blame of corruption at the feet of feuding authority figures and that maybe Sing’s rule of the street. As Sing reminds Yut like it or not “ Your still our leader” and convinces the lee heir to help him fix China town since “ China towns gone to the dogs people can’t even walk around safely in broad daylight”(173). These are the reasons it’s Sing and not Shorter who is the one to repair China town. Shorter is a relatively good person, at least by these series standards with a lot of empathy. However he was too willing to bend to the Lee’s whims and never question and challenge anything they did. Even before Shorter is injected with Banana Fish it’s heavily implied he’s given up hope entirely. Thinking the best scenario is for him to kill Eiji and then himself. Shorter exits being used as a tool to get to Ash and anger him being put down like a dog to end his suffering. Sing represents a newer generation that didn’t absorb fully nationalist ideas and loyalty to the mafia. 

While he does still value his own ethnic group and their needs he questions whether the Lee’s are what’s best for the citizens of China Town. Even when he’s willing to work with Yut, Sing makes it clear he’s not going to be a blind lacky. Sing when faced with the messy reality of Chinatown crumbling due to his and Yut’s feud tries to repair the rift between them. He is in the position do something since Sing post phoned and eventually decided not to die because of some honor bound purpose. At the end of the day Sing chooses to survive, repair and unite the different fractions for a common goal. However Sing was very much inspired by and driven by the empathy, sense of responsibility and love he learned from Shorter these are the same lessons Sing teaches Yut. I think both Shorter and Sing have their flaws and both bosses ideologies loyalty to one’s own kind above all else and street code can both be downright be toxic when taken to extremes but I think both are equally well written characters and important to understanding Banana Fish’s theme of unity in the face of oppression.

Episode 108: Barely Breathing - details

Episode Summary

Isobel makes Kyle “This Guy” Valenti inject her with Liz’s serum and starts dying, so Michael and Liz spend the rest of the episode trying to find a way to save her. Max spends most of the time crying in various places. And Alex, henceforth known as THE KING, literally crutches his father in the head, and then crutches him metaphorically using amazing computer hacking skills and the power of truth. 

Details - this is not an exhaustive list of every single detail, just just a few that might be important now or later.

(Alex and Jesse in the bunker is basically all one scene that the episode divides up, so it’s together here.)

In the bunker

Jesse Manes has been investigating the alien trio - as we have suspected. He has photos and articles on them, and surveillance set up so he can spy on them from his bunker.

Max’s house

Max is meeting up with his mom to see if she recognizes the alien symbol.

Mrs. Evans plays bridge and knows everybody. And she doesn’t like Max giving speeding tickets to the kids of her bridge club buddies. Even if they’re speeding.

Max tells his mother that Isobel was combining pills and wine and the doctors think it caused a psychotic break.

Mama’s first question is who knows, but she seems happy to hear only Noah does.

Mama tells Max that he and Isobel never spoke when they first came home, but it appeared that he and Isobel knew what each other was thinking so she figured they weren’t lonely.

Then Max and Isobel just started talking as if they’d “been observing, waiting to learn the entire language before uttering a single word.”

MAX IS DRINKING FROM A “BEST COP” MUG. Omg. So dork.

In the foster home the Evans went to, Max and Isobel were huddling in a corner crying, while “the other boy in the home had taken a red marker and drawn this [the alien symbol] all over the walls.”

Mrs. Evans thought that boy needed special attention - a wealthy family that could give him what he needed.

According to Carina, Michael did not end up in Roswell right away, so Mrs. Evans never knew what happened to that other boy in the foster home, and does not know that Michael is him.

Hospital lab

Kyle found the weirdest looking cactus to give to Liz. 

Dr. Avila and Liz have been working on a project and are presenting their findings to the board this afternoon. (Does it mean she’s fired if she ends up working in a fun underground alien sciene room that afternoon instead? Asking for a friend.)

Liz tells Kyle that Isobel is the one who killed Rosa.

Angry!Kyle thinks Liz should’ve told him sooner, because after all, Rosa was his sis-... uh.. friend. Totally his friend, Liz.

And clearly, he’s not withholding any information from her.

Liz shows Kyle the serum she was working on to try to strip Isobel of her powers. 

Isobel’s room

Noah doesn’t think Isobel looks sick enough to be in a hospital.

Noah wants things to go back to normal, and Isobel says things have never been normal between them. But she wants them to be.

Isobel tells Noah she’s going to speak to the doctor privately about a treatment plan.

Outside the bunker

Alex is waiting for Jesse as he leaves the bunker, locking it up and hiding it with Official Shrubbery.

Alex drops the bomb on his dad that he knows about Jim Valenti and aliens and is ready to discuss.

When Papa Manes plays dumb, Alex CRUTCHES HIM OVER THE HEAD.

He tried to be polite.

Isobel’s room, part 2

Kyle walks in to confront Isobel about killing Rosa, and Kyle stabs her in the chest with the serum-filled needle.

The junkyard

Michael says “some broken things can’t be fixed” supposedly referring to the sign Maria has brought him to repair.

but also lowkey probably talking about other things

He suggests it’d be better to make a new sign, but Maria wants that one repaired.

Michael doesn’t have Maria’s number, and claims not to want it.

Also, he tells Max he’d never sleep with her.

Max shows Michael the alien symbol on the paper and gets him up to speed on Wyatt drawing it, as well as what his mom said.

Max wonders if it was something they saw before the crash, which surprises Michael because Max never wants to talk about them potentially having had lives before the crash.

Max says, “I've spent a lot of time not talking about where we come from or why we’re here. Keep thinking I can pretend the past away and just be normal.”

This reveals a major conflict between these two: Max thinks being human is normal. Michael disagrees.

Max wants to know about the symbol in case it will provide a clue to whatever is wrong with Isobel. And he thinks it’s weird that they have no memories before the age of 7.

Michael wonders if whoever put them in the pods doesn’t want them to remember.

Suddenly Max feels cold - something is wrong with Isobel.

Isobel’s room, part 3

Liz wants to know why Kyle stabbed Isobel with an untested serum, but Kyle doesn’t know why he did it when it goes against what he believes.

Liz explains Isobel’s power - turns out she influenced Kyle to do it.

Kyle leaves and Max and Michael arrive to ask Isobel WTF she just did.

Isobel is concerned because Rosa’s autopsy photo showed a handprint - meaning she killed her with powers she didn’t know she had. She figures if the serum takes away those powers, she’ll be safe.

She says, “If I’m normal, then I’m safe.” 

Again, bringing up the conflict between “normal=human” and “normal=it’s okay if you’re an alien.”

Kyle “This Guy” Valenti comes back in to tell them that the room is private, not soundproof. So please have quieter alien arguments.

Isobel is pleased to find that she can’t influence Kyle to take off his shirt. The serum worked!

Michael leaves, clearly not pleased.

Inside the bunker

Jesse Manes is zip tied to a chair while Alex works at the computer station.

Jesse denies the existence of Project Shepherd, but Alex knows it’s BS because he’s a code-breaker and has hacked Russian and Chinese intelligence and Jesse’s pitful security is nothing to him.

When Jesse wants to know why now, he finds out Alex has been looking for leverage basically forever.

Alex shows him the alien shard he found, and talks about how he’s been busy the last few weeks surfing the dark web, following his dad, and reconstructing one of his burner phones.

In other words, THE KING has been busy RULING.

Also, he called Mom.

So Mom is alive? And apparently able to talk to Alex and give some kind of insight into Jesse?

Jesse tries to say he kept Alex out of this for his own good, to keep him safe.

But Alex is spilling truth all over the place about how Jesse wasn’t too concerned about letting Kyle in on it. And he wasn’t too concerned about keeping Alex safe since he sent him to war when he only wanted to make music. Because Jesse thinks he’s weak because he’s gay.

What’s Alex’s endgame? To destroy the thing Jesse loves and make him watch.

After hacking into the database, Alex is able to see a sexy modeling photo of Michael saying that he’s a terrorist. Threat Level: Red

As in “red hot”??

Alex wants to know why Jesse is trying to frame Michael, and Jesse rambles a while about how Alex is blinded by his perversions and Michael has been trying to use Alex to infiltrate for over a decade because “his kind” is their enemy... blah blah blah

“Alex, these aliens are monsters.” So Jesse has now clearly told Alex that he believes Michael is an alien. He has plenty of incidents of unprovoked violence as proof.

“Do not talk to me about unprovoked violence! Do you hear me?” is Alex’s amazing answer. (Because he’s amazing. And also because if that was the criteria for being an alien, Jesse would be the most alien alien out there.)

Alex says he’s just using this operation to target people he hates.

Alex tells Jesse he’s going to have to be on the flight in the morning to go oversee some training in Niger, and after that, he’s going to have to request a transfer out of Roswell. 

If he ever comes back, Alex is going to report his illegal, not-sanctioned-at-all operation to the Pentagon.

The Feds shut him down in 2010 and he’s been running it illegally ever since.

Outside the hopsital

Liz and Dr. Avila are walking along talking science, when Michael comes up to give her a piece of his mind.

Michael says, “You stripped Isobel of her identity.”

He clearly believes “normal=it’s okay if you’re an alien” 

Liz reminds Michael that Isobel injected herself, and besides her powers are dangerous.

Michael tries to compare it to, among other things, someone making a serum to decrease her Mexican-ness.

Which Liz claps back - bad comparison - Isobel’s powers are what murdered Rosa. Not the same as being Mexican, Michael.

Michael then tells Liz about Max and Isobel’s psychic connection - if Isobel is hurting, Max will suffer too. So if something happens to Isobel, she’ll be getting revenge on the wrong person.

“Because Max didn’t take your sister from you. All he ever did was love you.”

He says, to the woman he knows deep down loves Max because Isobel invaded her mind and told him so.

Isobel’s room, part 4

Isobel is promising Noah things will be different and there’ll be no more secrets. 

But then she starts coughing up blood, so that kinda ruins the moment.

Isobel passes out and Noah yells for a doctor.

Hospital lab, part 2

Liz tells Kyle that Isobel’s cells are degrading under the microscope. Turns out the serum is attacking her blood.

Looks like Isobel will be dead by the end of the day.

Isobel’s room, part 5

Max is trying (and failing) to heal Isobel over and over while Noah waits in the waiting room.

Max barfs, and Kyle suggests calling loved ones.

Max doesn’t want to call their mom - he’s not giving up.

He tells Liz she can make an antidote, but she says there’s no time.

On the roof of the Crashdown

Liz is listening to music for inspiration when Michael comes to find her.

The only thing she’s come up with is Michael’s alien genius - she wants to know what he knows.

But he doesn’t trust her with it until she tells him that she can’t let Max watch Isobel die.

Michael’s Fun Underground Alien Science Room 

Michael has a ton of research and alien artifacts he’s been working on.

He’s trying to rebuild his ship.

Michael decides Liz needs to know the truth about Isobel sending her away 10 years earlier before she tries to help her.

Liz denies that Isobel was able to do that - she was gonna do it anyway, she says.

Michael shows Liz the weird pod juice he has, and the two of them figure they can work together and come up with a way to put Isobel in stasis.

The hospital

Mrs. Evans is there to visit Isobel and bring her magazines.

Max is trying to keep her away because, you know, the blood and decomposition and all.

But Mrs. Evans is upset by the idea that Isobel doesn’t need her.

She says Max and Isobel never let her be a mother. 

Max says they were happy growing up and their parents gave them so much, maybe they didn’t know how to ask for more.

Mrs. Evans decides she’ll come back tomorrow.

Isobel’s room, part 6

Noah wants an update from Kyle, but Kyle tells him he needs to talk to Max because he can’t disclose anything.

Noah argues that he’s husband and next of kin, and Kyle just answers with “then let me treat her, please.”

Clearly leaving Noah with absolutely no reason to suspect foul play next episode.

Once Noah leaves, Kyle hooks her up with an infusion of nail polish remover.

Isobel doesn’t understand why Kyle is being so nice.

So he explains how when he was an intern he had to learn to be a good doctor to all patients before he could become Dr. McSexy.

Men’s bathroom

Noah takes his frustrations out on the poor men’s bathroom mirror.

Who’s the murderer now, Noah?

The Pod Cave

Michael and Liz figure the pods are the key to keeping Isobel in stasis - they just have to figure out how to get her in there.

Assuming it’s an organic membrane, Liz figures she can find a way in, and tells Michael to go get Isobel - she’ll have it sorted by the time they return.

Liz sees her silver jewelry react to the pod, and is suddenly grateful she’s wearing A CRAP TON OF IT, apparently, so she can melt it all down to make an amazing silver lotion for Isobel.

Isobel’s room, part 7

Max is super upset with Isobel for choosing to inject herself and leave him and Michael alone on Earth.

He cries at her until she wakes up, telling her he won’t survive losing her.

Then Michael comes in with news - they can save her!

Isobel says she wants a chance to live.

The Pod Cave

The trio arrives - Michael says they went to look for Noah so Isobel could say goodbye, but they couldn’t find him.

Her not being able to say goodbye will in no way come back to bite them all next week.

It will.

Michael and Max promise they’ll remind Isobel of anything she forgets if the pod gives her amnesia.

Isobel gives Max her wedding ring, then lets Liz lube her up for the pod.

Once Isobel goes in, they clean up and Michael leaves so Max can talk to Liz.

Liz wants to know if Max is okay, and suggests he forgive Isobel so it hurts less.

And she always wants him to know that she’s glad Isobel sent her away because she saw two oceans that summer and anyways, they were never meant to be together.

Crushing Max’s little alien heart again.

Max lays a hand on Isobel’s pod - briefly leaving an alien symbol.

On a road somewhere

Jesse tells Cam he’s going out of town and asks her to keep him informed of any weirdness in town. And also to provide him with intel on Alex.

He also reminds her that he can have her sister put back in maximum security with just one call.

Maximum security?! What the hell did Charlie DO?

The Wild Pony

Michael returns the fixed sign to Maria.

Maria confesses that she wanted that sign fixed because her mom recognizes it and always knows she’s home when she sees it.

“Like a beacon” Michael says, pulling out the alien symbol paper. Hmmm.

The Good Place - Season 2, Episode 02

Right, got some things I need to get done today, so let’s get to it. It’s The Good Place, season 2 episode 02! Here we GO!

-We begin with Michael recording his logs on the experiment, starting attempt number 3. He can do this. He’s going to make it work. And he’ll be famous, like the man who invented bees with teeth! …Fuck me, that might be the most unnerving Bad Place thing we’ve heard about.

-So, back to the zero-point for Eleanor. She gets Chris as her soulmate, and that night at the welcome party, Tahani’s clearly still with Tomás judging by her clog-wench attire. Also she throws some veiled insults at Eleanor that have her saying, and I quote, “go fork yourself, you mean giraffe” when Tahani walks away.

-So day two, they’ve got something for the chaos sequence! MEAN GIRAFFES! The chaos sequence never gets old, I tell ya.

-Day three. “Hey, robot slave lady? Busty Alexa? …Oh, Janet!” Bing! I’m just gonna let Busty Alexa as a phrase sit on your think wrinkles for a minute. Anyways Eleanor wants to learn how to be a good person, are there any people here who can do that?

-And that’s how Janet takes Eleanor to meet Chidi! …Nope he seems too nerdy, got anyone else?

-Cut to day 128, where things are going fairly how Michael wanted, as he’s got an evil obelisk up to fuck with the quartet and show them how the Bad Place knows they’re missing someone they shouldn’t be. Someone has to get inside the obelisk, or they’ll take you all!

-“I can’t go! I’m too young to die! And too old to eat off the kids’ menu! What a stupid age I am!” Jay gets some pretty great lines.

-Also further evidence that Eleanor is really horny. And in this version of the loop, she does not get on great with Tahani. Chidi tries to nobly go and then ELEANOR FIGURES IT OUT, again.

-Chapter 16!

-Attempt number eleven! Michael’s made progress. Eleanor always hates her house. Tahani very consistently hates Eleanor. Jay hates being forced into silence. And Chidi is a constant ball of stress. He’s gotten a very solid first few months of loop, it’s just, you know, the point where Eleanor’s stupid little meat brain starts bumping neurons together and figuring things out that’s the problem.

-So, fresh loop, day three, Eleanor once again looks to Janet for help and gets sent to Chidi…By day 43, Chidi’s teaching the rest of the quartet at Eleanor’s place, when she’s got to kick them all out because her soulmate has some kind of special surprise for her.

-Seems she’s with a chap named Sebastian this loop, who’s…

-Oh boy.

-A terrible singer, amongst other things. He has written a three-hour spoken-word jazz opera for her, and hey there’s Vicky in the back looking very displeased with her situation. Again, I would totally watch a spinoff show that’s just Vicky trying to reclaim her glory and get a leading role in this drama again.

-And also Eleanor realizes this has to be the Bad Place because no version of paradise would include three hours of this. Okay, fine, one more go.

-So Michael’s got to go out to Janet’s reboot button and of course her fail-safe mechanism kicks in as he kicks it on. Attempt 32 fades into attempt 57, 99, 108…Finally, Michael’s realizing the problem is Eleanor herself.

-And that’s when she steps on in instead of waiting to be called because the door was open, and, pardon, sir, did you just say this is the Bad Place? . . .

-Attempt 109. The door is now locked.

-Attempt 127, meet your soulmate, Greg. 146, meet Glenn. …Fuck it, 218, meet Tahani, let’s see how that goes. 291, meet Lerf. Attempt 333, your soulmate is a fucking dog.

-And whether at the welcome party, or the intro meeting, or on a pig farm with Chidi, or a traveling monk line, or the intro meeting again, Eleanor always figures it out. Even in a cactus field with a giant thing of balloons she has to get across safely okay that one was a little on the nose. And god, I wish I had screenshot power because farm gal Eleanor and Chidi with the world’s biggest pig are kind of amazing.

-BEES BEES BEES BEES

-Michael’s really getting tired of rebooting Janet, too. She’s started insisting she’s pregnant with his child. HE CAN’T EVEN MAKE THOSE. Is it physically possible for you to relax that failsafe a little? Nnnope.

-Eventually, the crew are straight up rioting at their setup meetings, and Vicky’s just feeling like this would all be so much smoother if she got a nice fat lead role again…

-By attempt 484, Michael is just in open despair as he drinks while recording. He’s so, fucking, tired of dealing with Eleanor being sooooo smart and lookit me I’m in the bad place bleh bleh bleh bleh. His boss still thinks they’re on version two, and the lies get worse. At this point, Michael has no other choice but to ride it through and he’s started stress eating and he’s getting bigger and he’s a fat monster!

-He’s doing this the whole time with Eleanor in the fucking chair because he just, does, not, care anymore. Fuck it, this one doesn’t count.

-Loop after loop. One with an Italian food theme. One with a French pastry theme. One with foods on sticks. By attempt number 649, Eleanor herself feels like she’s trying less, as she just openly walks away from nerd man Chidi.

-Day 55 of this loop, and they’re trying to make Chidi decide whether Eleanor goes downstairs or not. When Eleanor…

-Is too lost in her fighting so JAY FIGURES IT OUT THIS TIME.

-And Michael just despairs. I don’t blame him.

-Okay! Attempt 802! They’re a week in, Eleanor’s being taught by Chidi and hates it, Tahani and Jay are still doing their early loop. Things are looking like they might actually be stable…Time for a town meeting.

-And the only person there is Vicky. Because the crew is on strike. You’re WHAT?!

-Into his office, where she is pissed because they’ve lost the thread of their goals, she spent weeks working on an Australian accent (is that what you call that) that she never even got to use! HER demand is a more important role, but everyone has at least one demand.

-Lot of folks just want bigger houses. Gayle apparently wants a backstory where she was an MMA fighter. Gunnar wants his biting back. You know some of these would give the game away immediately, right, Vicky?

-Why do you think she’s the one here, Michael? She can help smooth over Gunnar and the other…problems. But a lot of this is doable, and it’ll go a long way to making the crew felt listened to.

-Over to Chidi trying to teach Eleanor, and on day two, and she’s…Not…Doing…Great. They end up taking a breather down at the clam chowder fountain, and find the place…Weirdly empty. What is going on here?

-And then Eleanor catches a whiff of…cigar smoke? She and Chidi go slip around a corner, and yep, there’s two of the crew, griping as they smoke cigars about how far off the rails this project is and what’s the point? They were fulfilled in their old gigs! Also there’s Todd who’s a giant magma monster without his human suit on.

-So Eleanor and Chidi know! And more importantly, they know away from Michael’s attention! Okay. Okay. Deep breaths. Focus. Simple answer. They need to keep this under their hats and figure out a plan. …Janet!

-Can they…leave the neighborhood?

-And this is how they end up on the train, and Chidi still thinks it’s the almond milk. By this point in the loop, Eleanor’s figured out about Jay, so he’s definitely another human. And she’s thinking Tahani might be, because, bluntly, Tahani’s kind of an asshole.

-So they end up at, where else…The medium place! And she’s kind of cross because this is the 15th time these idiots have shown up at her door and they have not brought one gram of the cocaine they promised.

-And while that’s going on, Michael is still negotiating with Vicky, trying to show how this could succeed for them. You could be torturing Jared from Subway! She has no faith that he’ll make it succeed, though. So, here’s her proposition. You’re going to reboot the situation one more time. And then she’s sitting in your chair. She’s got a whole specific plan that’s going to work.

-That’s insubordination! You won’t get away with it!

-And this, is a file of every mistake you’ve made over every reboot. Extortion, Michael! The X makes it sound cool.

-I’m getting my Vicky focused spinoff! YAY!

-Back in the Medium Place, here’s the scoop. Eleanor always makes it here with Janet, obviously. Chidi usually gets here, but not always. Sometimes Jay. One time even Tahani. But the end result is always the same. You promise to bring cocaine, and then you get rebooted, and you show up at her door without cocaine.

-So what do they do next? This place isn’t bad, they could just

-stay here forever? Yeah you try that most of the time. And then you end up going back. Sometimes for your friends. Sometimes because you catch her when she’s masturbating. Sometimes because she catches you when she’s masturbating. You always end up back with a plan, and the plan fails, and you end up here.

-So, here’s the good news. She started writing down the plans you guys tried, to cut things short. Here they are, have fun. So, attack Michael, seduce Michael, trick Michael, catch a magic panda and…use its powers…? This was a Jay plan, wasn’t it. Are you sure he got here in one piece and without head trauma?

-Back in town, Michael’s out thinking, when Jay comes by, and Michael’s…Fuck it, he needs to talk to someone. Come on, Jay. So to bring you up to speed, this is the Bad Place, you’re being tortured, now come listen and be his sounding board, sound good?

-Back to Eleanor and Chidi. So they tried throwing Tahani under the bus once, but Eleanor’s real willing to try it again. Under a bigger, more literal bus. Chidi is feeling like this is inevitable and endless loop, and it fucking sucks. They are being punished for the mistakes of life, but the rebooting means they can never learn! (Real talk if Michael presented it like that, that he’s keeping them stuck as bad people so the fun never has to stop, he could probably get approval for the whole operation, reboots and all.)

-And his frustration has her frustrated and furious, which sends her back into the house to talk with Mindy…Who has, for the record, heard this story 15 times in 15 ways and she is tired of it. Your complicated emotions inevitably lead to love and to boning and here. She gets out a tape, and from a spy camera, it’s Eleanor and Chidi in a bedroom in this house, admitting their love for each other. Sure, she got caught in the end, but.

-You two boned in eight days in this house, a total of like 20 times. …And, the…The love? Oh, just that one time. It kind of ruined the mood for her. She puts it at the end of the tape as a cool down for after she finishes.

-Eleanor, though, is in shock about the words. She’s only said ‘love’ to two men in her life. One was Stone Cold Steve Austin, and one was a guy who she thought was Stone Cold Steve Austin.

-But, but, she barely knows Chidi! They only just met! No, Eleanor, don’t you get it? You’ve known him across hundreds of attempts by Michael. You’ve spent…Well it’s been a long time since the real first time you met Chidi. Your mind might not remember it, but your gut does. Why do you think you end up working with him so many times?

-…She’s out of here. And she’s taking this tape! “Oh no, don’t, it’s my only copy.” Mindy’s a real piece of work, guys.

-So it’s back on the train, as Eleanor’s full of complicated thoughts…While back over with Michael, he’s trying to figure out his thoughts as he bounces things off of Jay. And Jay does not get the situation at all, but, okay there’s a lot of funny details but I’m gonna summarize for the sake of time.

-He was in a dance crew, Dance Dance Resolution: We Resolve to Dance. He had a falling out with a guy, who started another crew, and challenged DDR:WRtD to a dance-off. So they went, furious and vicious, and slashed all the tires of the other crew. And as stupid as that story is, Michael figures out a plan…

-And so, in his latest confrontation with them…Eleanor tries to threaten him with how they’re the only ones with power. You’re gonna run out of loops eventually, but they only have to nail it one time, buddy, so unless you want this all to come crashing down, you need to—

-He wants to work with them. He’s got problems with the crew and he needs people on the inside of the situation. What do you say? New best friends?

KAGE is Konoha’s New Exciting Boy Group

Kage have emerged as an unstoppable force in the Konoha pop scene, and now the group is already on their way to take over the world. Its two main tracks, “Beasts” and “I’m on My Way” landed on the number 1 and 2 spots on all major music charts on Konoha and abroad, while the rest of the tracks on the album “Jutsu” are on the top 20. The group’s four music videos on their YouTube channel have already amassed nearly 200 million views and counting.

The five members—Hyuuga Neji, Sai, Inuzuka Kiba, Uchiha Sasuke, and Uzumaki Naruto—all helped write and produce the songs on their album.

Kage is KG Entertainment’s first idol group. The label previously specialized in hip-hop and more experimental soloists and groups, so the decision of debuting a pop group was met with either eyebrow-raising incredulity or feverish anticipation.

“There was certainly a huge amount of pressure from both sides—from the ones who anticipate because we don’t want to let them down, and from the ones rooting for us to fail because we want to prove them wrong,” said leader Hyuuga Neji. “But we simply channeled the anxiety and frustration into working hard to make an excellent debut.”

Kage’s debut also came at the most opportune time. Konoha’s pop music is on the rise and is being recognized all across the great nations. “I think it’s pretty cool that our music is reaching other countries! Kinda makes you realize what they say about music’s power to connect everybody,” shared Uzumaki Naruto, the mood-maker and the youngest of the group.

With a world tour currently planned, Kage really would be able to connect more with their fans. The group is set to visit 6 countries and play 30 shows. 500,000 people are expected to attend. Now, that’s something to look forward to.

With the debut of KGE’s hot new boy group KAGE, you must be dying to learn more about the members! Let’s start off with the charismatic and dangerously sexy, Uchiha Sasuke. :*

Uchiha Itachi of the legendary 2nd generation group Akatsuki is his older brother. (Handsome bros <3)

He trained with Oto Entertainment for 2 years before transferring and debuting under KG.

The Sharingan Group is a conglomerate owned and founded by Uchiha Madara, Sasuke’s grandfather, making him an heir. (OMG!! Sounds like the beginning of a drama plot XD)

KAGE Unveils Titles of First Two Singles of Comeback Album 04/04/2008

KAGE has finally unveiled the title of two tracks on their upcoming comeback album.

To kick off their highly-anticipated return, it has been revealed that the group will be releasing “Will of Fire” and “Endure” this coming July 1, as seen in the brand new teaser posters for KAGE’s ROOTS PROJECT released earlier today.

Also indicated in the teaser posters are the personnel in the production of the tracks. KG Entertainment veteran Hatake Kakashi produce both tracks as he always does for Kage, while all the boys would take turns to write and compose, and the main rappers, Uchiha Sasuke and Uzumaki Naruto would pen their own verses. This time however, one of the writers of the second track “Endure” is none other than Kunoichi’s Haruno Sakura, alongside the group’s primary lyricist Uchiha Sasuke.

Kage leader Hyuuga Neji says of Sakura’s involvement in their album, “Sakura-san was kind enough to gift us a song, to which we are grateful. Its style is unlike anything we have done before and it gears towards a different but interesting direction for us as a group.” Neji adds, “We hope the fans who have supported us up until now will continue to let us show them Kage’s new colors.”

Meanwhile, Kage will be gearing up to start their world tour on October 10 at Konoha Memorial Stadium which would include the tracks from the new album in the setlist. They plan to visit 11 different countries, hold 50 performances, and meet 1.2 million fans.

‘Idols Weekly’ Kage Episode Highlights 08/05/2008

Hey, guys! KageYah here. The video for part 1 is already up but it hasn’t been subbed yet. For those of you who can’t wait, here are some highlights of the episode. (Spoiler alert?)

It’s Kage’s second time as guests and hosts Hashirama and Tobirama (mostly Hashi) pretend to be emotional because they say the boys have grown up so well and will probably be really chic and cold now after their international success.

To celebrate this momentous occasion, the hosts said they prepared a red carpet only for Kage.

Finally, the boys enter one by one in the studio driving a toy car on the red carpet.

Kiba tumbled off the car towards the end.

Sasuke was blank-faced the whole time and everyone was laughing.

Hashirama tells the editor to pause a few times for Neji’s footage to give viewers a chance to screenshot him on the car while wind blows on his hair.

After introductions were made, Tobirama asked them what has changed with them in the past two years besides being recognized more. Neji said nothing much and that they are the same. “Yeah, we never learn!” Naruto interjected. Hashi beamed at this saying he was gonna make them talk shit.

Sai: “I was specifically instructed by our CEO to ‘stop talking shit.’ …  He didn’t like it when I said that he said he asks for malls to close so he can shop and that we have the same dermatologist among other things. He also didn’t like that I talk about peni—” The members had to cover his mouth for this, lol.

Hashi asked if they got themselves significant others in the past 2 years since they all claimed to be single last time. Neji said that it has gotten more difficult for them somehow because they’re so busy. “Speak for yourself!” Kiba said. He and Naruto were howling.

During a beat, Hashi asked Sasuke, “Sasuke-kun, how’s your grandfather?” Sasuke was all ‘what’??? [T/N: I don’t know either?? He asked this the last time, too.]

Naruto told Hashi to ask Sasuke if he has had a girlfriend. Sasuke replied no. Everyone in the room went crazy with this revelation. Sasuke said, “Nor have any of these guys. I don’t know why they’re celebrating.” [T/N: AHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA!!!!!]

Sasuke: “I take relationships very seriously, so I won’t start anything with anyone unless I feel something very deeply towards them.”

Tobi: “...Damn, suddenly we can’t make fun of him anymore.” Everyone laughed.

Hashi: “You’ll never get married, Sasuke!!!” Sasuke shrugged comically.

Then it’s time for Dancing at Random, where the boys have to dance to their own songs played on shuffle. Whoever is the least synced with the other members by the end will be hit by a toy hammer in the head. The songs played are: Will of Fire, Beasts, Believe It!, and Illusions.

[T/N: I have to say, Kage is at the point of their career where they really don’t give a shit anymore. In other words, they couldn’t remember most of their choreography.]

Despite not remembering their choreography, Kage is still very much synchronized with their idiocy. Except Naruto, the King of the idiot line. The rest of the members wordlessly conspired to betray Naruto so he had to take the hammer in the end.

“I CAN DO THIS!!!” Naruto said as he bowed his head for the hammer. He looked like he was close to tears. “IT HURTS!!!!!!!!”

Hashi and Tobi felt sorry for him and decided to give them a chance to dance to one more song. The plot twist was that it wasn’t a Kage song--it was ‘Bloom’ by Kunoichi.

Another plot twist: everyone nailed the choreography.

Hashi: “This is… really something, you guys.” Tobi: “Naruto, maybe you should ask to be transferred to Kunoichi instead.”

Naruto: “Maybe I should!! Those girls will never betray me!” Naruto said Sasuke would join him if he transfers to Kunoichi not because they’re friends but because… Naruto never got to finish what he was saying because the camera caught Sasuke glaring challengingly which made everyone laugh.

SASUKE MAKES SOLO DEBUT WITH MV FOR BREATHING FIRE 2009-05-15

Uchiha Sasuke releases a brand new single to mark first solo project.

Fresh from the success of his group’s Roots Project and rap subunit SN, with member Uzumaki Naruto, the Kage rapper who is known for the dexterity of his words and dry wit, ditches radio-ready pop for a more experimental raw rock-funk-hip-hop hybrid in his solo debut album “Revolution.”

“Breathing Fire” is about a man’s obsessive pursuit for power that it ends up burning him. The music video is a single take of the camera zooming out to show an empire slowly burning to dust, providing a stunning supplement to an already captivating track.

The release of this single also kicks off a series of shows that Sasuke will be doing around Fire Country and abroad. Tour dates to be announced soon so keep an eye out for them.

In addition to “Breathing Fire,” Sasuke is also set to release a music video tomorrow for “Heavenly Hand” which features a vocal line from Kunoichi member Haruno Sakura who is also busy preparing for her own full-length solo album tentatively set to be released later this year.

[INTERVIEW] 100923 KoKo Magazine: Sakura Throughout

We catch up with Haruno Sakura on her journey as an artist, and beyond.

Q: It’s very difficult to get an interview with you. We wanted to know more about you. Sakura: I like doing interviews but I don’t get that many opportunities to do them. Maybe it’s because my company thinks I thrive in easy-consumption type of media. (laughs)

Q: But you’ve been all around this year and prior. You released your first solo album, you’ve been featured in a few tracks by different artists, and you’ve gotten songwriting credit for a Kage track. What was that like? S: It was a mixture of tenacity and luck. Before debuting, I was insistent that I wanted to write or at least contribute to writing our own material, to the point where I think I annoyed our company. Our CEO said they would only agree if I made a song that they determined would be a hit. So I wrote and wrote every single day, two track ideas at least. Luckily, I got a few songs in and they allowed me. But then I’m left with a heap of material just waiting to be worked on, and counting! It was really just luck that I went to the KG Studios when Kage were throwing ideas around for their comeback. Naruto asked me—maybe as a joke, now that I think about it—if I had anything lying around, and I said I did. I’m just glad they liked it enough to work with it and took a risk even if it sounded different from what they did. That became a starting point where our company decided to take a chance and make me release my own album.

Q: Your album Love Throughout had really good reviews. What did you think about that? Were you expecting it? S: Not at all! I still couldn’t even believe that it exists sometimes, and that I was allowed to do it. I’m really thankful of the warm reception. It makes me want to work harder and better. I hope they’ll let me do it again.

Q: Your collaborations with Kage’s Uchiha Sasuke were also well-received. S: I was honored that Sasuke-kun asked me because ‘Heavenly Hand’ was a lovely song. He was nice enough to return the favor with ‘Silently, Strongly’ on my album. Next time, I’ll be the one to return the favor, and then this exchange will go on forever. Hopefully the fans won’t get tired. (laughs)

Q: What do you wish to do next? S: I would really like to try my hand at producing. I’m currently taking a few courses in music theory and production at KUA (Konoha University of the Arts) because I want to take this seriously. I’m not actually producing anything at the moment but I’ll be ready when it comes. (laughs) If it doesn’t, well, I’m having fun learning, at least.

Q: You seem to be a very disciplined person to manage studies in between activities. In what other ways are you strict towards yourself? S: In many aspects. As a public figure, I’m obligated to maintain an image so I watch my weight and take care of my hair and skin and all that. I’m most strict towards myself with making music. My pre-debut habit of making two song ideas before the day ends has carried on to this day. I have set high standards for myself. I’m pretty sure I have put off some people with how intense I am. (laughs) But I think of being here as a gift and that it’s my duty to work hard to show that I am grateful and worthy of it in return.

Q: Lastly, this question begs to be asked: any news on Kunoichi comeback? S: At the moment, we’re all very busy doing individual activities. I have promotional activities and school at the moment. Ino is working on her own solo album to be released next year which I’m looking forward to. Sprinting Sisters variety show has gotten even funnier since TenTen joined as a member. Hinata’s doing her drama. I still keep in touch with them, especially Ino, and they’re all really pleased with their accomplishments, as I am. We are all looking forward to come back as a group in the near future but in the meantime, we hope Kuchis will support us in our individual endeavors.

Tsunade Talks About Experience Working with Sakura Thursday, 2011 May 20

In a recent interview with local news outlet K-Daily, Tsunade discussed her thoughts and feelings about working with Haruno Sakura (Kunoichi) on her much awaited comeback album after a 5-year hiatus following the death of her husband, Kato Dan.

When asked, “Is there a reason you decided to work with Sakura of all the more experienced producers?” the legendary singer commented, “I only met her personally last year but her career has been one of the few that I’ve truly followed and anticipated. When we met, she mentioned that she’s trying to branch out into producing so I invited her to work on my album, and the rest, as they say, is history.”

Tsunade also adds, “She is very comfortable to work with, and it didn’t feel like she was a beginner at all. She has a clear vision of what she wants, and puts her heart into achieving it.”

Even before her comeback, Tsunade’s first single, “Rebirth” got a lot of attention for being written by Kage’s Uchiha Sasuke and composed by Sakura herself. Regarding this, Tsunade reveals she initially didn’t know about the song’s origin when it was brought to the studio.

“I had no idea it was Uchiha’s track and only found out about the fact while working with Sakura. I told her I wanted to have a song that commands and has a lot of energy, the kind that makes you think, ‘Oh! The baddest bitch is back.’ Then when we returned to the studio the next day, she looked like she pulled an all-nighter, but she had the perfect song for me,” Tsunade reveals.

Tsunade says she has yet to meet Sasuke in person, “We haven’t met but the recordings would go back and forth, and he would give notes through Sakura on the kind of feeling that would go with so and so part.”

With the success of ‘Rebirth,’ Tsunade hopes to collaborate again with Sakura and Sasuke in the future.

FULL INTERVIEW: SASUKE TALKS CREATIVE PROCESS, FEATURES, BEING COMPARED WITH ITACHI + MORE 2011-11-14

Kage member Uchiha Sasuke is this month’s cover artist for K-D magazine. The editor sat down during the photoshoot for an in-depth interview. Check out the translation below.

Q: You look pretty tired even though it’s still morning. Is the photoshoot too early for you? Sasuke: No, it’s fine. I’m just a bit jet-lagged is all.

Q: This photoshoot is highlighting a different side of you—a softer, more natural concept than the ones we normally see you in. Does looking like an idol make you feel uncomfortable? S: No—well, I am an idol. This is the path I have chosen so I should be able to get past any sort of discomfort I would feel on my own. Also, I was told fans seem to enjoy this kind of thing.

Q: Tsunade’s ‘Rebirth’ which was released this year got a lot of positive feedback. What did you think about it, as the one who wrote it? S: It did? That’s great. Tsunade’s distinctive voice has been something that I regarded highly as I was growing up. The song wouldn’t have worked as well had it been sung by anyone else, in my opinion. It’s an honor to have my song sung by her.

Q: You said, “It did?” as though you don’t pay attention to charts. S: I don’t. Not about stuff I did myself at least. Or rather, when I was told that Tsunade liked it, and when I heard the results and was satisfied with it, then that’s all that matters. Not that it’s surprising that it did well; this is Tsunade after all.

Q: That was a cool thing to say... S: Anyway.

Q: You’ve always written your own stuff, and now, aside from collaborations, you’ve started writing songs for other people. How do you know which songs to give away, which songs to use for Kage, and which ones for your solos? S: They aren’t premeditated decisions. When I work on a project, I work with the mindset that I have at that moment so the output would come organically. Although, when I work with Kage, the decisions would be informed by the opinions of the members and mass appeal. When I’m on my own, as I said, I’m less concerned about whether it would chart or not, and more about releasing content that currently speaks to me, or that I’m curious about. There would always be ideas and tracks that wouldn’t work so they’d be put in the back burner until an opportunity arises, which was the case with ‘Rebirth.’ And then there would be songs that would never see the light of day—the ones I keep for myself or for certain people.

Q: Like a significant other? S: Sure.

Q: The last two years have been very eventful for you especially as a solo artist. I heard that not only did you produce your album, but you also participated in its visual concept and direction. What prompted that decision and what was it like? S: It seemed like a natural course of things since I wanted the album to show facets of myself I haven’t shown before. Up until then, we’ve been making decisions as a group and we’ve always trusted Neji’s aesthetic sensibilities in terms of the direction of our visual concepts. It was just something I wanted to try on my own. In working solo, I wasn’t so much worried about looking cool as I was about showing visuals that would effectively complement the tracks. It was like problem solving so I thought it was enjoyable.

Q: Also in the last two years, you have been a featured artist in various tracks from a whole range of artists—there’s ‘Retrieve’ with Shino A; and then there’s ‘Silently, Strongly’ with Sakura with whom you also collaborated on Tsunade’s ‘Rebirth;’ and then if you consider your subunit with Naruto— S: I don’t.

Q: Oh, alright. And then you’re also set to feature on a track on Troublesome’s new album. My question is, is there a reason you do all these features? S: You say it as if I have done so many, but it’s not nearly as much as the featuring offers I’ve gotten. I’m rather selective on which tracks I feature in. I would always consider if I can really be of help to make the song better, if my current mindset matches the tone of the song, and also if I can offer and learn something different from this collaboration. It must be a give-and-take, in my understanding. Shino has an interesting turn of phrase in his lyrics; Troublesome has a unique eclectic sound; Tsunade, I’ve already mentioned; and Sakura is incredibly talented and I’d be a complete idiot if I said no to her. It’s burdensome to turn people down but I’d rather be thorough than half-ass these things.

Q: You’re very particular about where you lend your talents to that’s why it always yields good results. Now I understand why people consider you a top idol rapper. Who do you think is your current competition? S: Naruto told me that if I were to encounter a question like this, I should answer his name. So my answer is no comment.

Q: Are you at all competitive? S: With rapping, not anymore. There’s a prejudice against idol rappers that they’re somehow less legitimate than those in the underground scene, so they’re upheld to a different standard anyway. It’s futile to compete. Frankly, I’m not interested in it. As it is now, rapping is just a means to an end for me. I’m more concerned about making good music that reflects who I am, what I care about.

Q: Ever since you debuted, you have been compared with your brother Itachi of Akatsuki. What is your opinion on this? S: I knew it would be inevitable from the start even if I tried to distance myself and debuted in a different company. The admiration I feel for my brother even from before he debuted remains, so I’m not resentful at all. But I think our directions are different. Itachi has surpassed being a musician to being an icon. His influence extends to fashion, lifestyle, art, business, and such. I’m just trying to make good music. I’m flattered by the comparison but I would prefer to be viewed in a different light.

KG Entertainment CEO Danzo laughs off Sasuke and Sakura dating rumors. 2012-02-15

Photos recently surfaced on various social media sites of what appears to be Uchiha Sasuke (Kage) and Haruno Sakura (Kunoichi) in a grocery mart, in an attempt to spark up dating rumors.

Despite the fact that these dating rumors would usually fizzle out after a few days, KG was quick to dismiss them with an incredulous scoff. CEO Shimura Danzo himself spoke to various news outlets: “It’s utterly ridiculous. The reports are merely unfounded rumors.”

A representative from the company spoke of the photos, “Kage went to Wave Country last year for a world tour and Sakura was a guest performer at the time. They had a free day and decided to go out as a group, including PD’s and managers. ” They added, “Our company prides itself in having talents that treat each other as they would their families and friends. Rumors like this would only hurt that.”

Are Haruno Sakura and Uchiha Sasuke dating? August 21, 2012

Haruno Sakura and Uchiha Sasuke are longtime friends and songwriting partners, but could their relationship be blooming into something more?

Fans are determined to prove it.

KG representatives have previously denied the existence of this relationship which seemed to quiet the rumors down for a while, but they were sparked anew after Haruno Sakura uploaded a photo on her Instagram. The photo is taken in a park and featured a blurry man’s pair of legs. Seems innocuous, right? It could be anyone!

However, a few minutes later, Uchiha Sasuke uploaded a photo that looks like it was taken on the same park. Fans kept noting the similar bench, light posts, and trashcan, and deduced that they must be together. Some more meticulous fans even went as far as zooming in on one of the trashcans to reveal what was supposedly the reflection of two people who are believed to be Sasuke and Sakura. Almost immediately, Sasuke removed the picture which only added more fuel to the fire.

Back in March, Uchiha Sasuke discussed being in the middle of relationship rumors in an episode of Video Star: “There are pros and cons to admitting. Because I’m a celebrity, being in a relationship with me would potentially do more harm than good. Although the public has a right to know whether or not I’m dating someone, I have no obligation to disclose anything.”

So it looks like we won’t be able to have any kind of confirmation (affirmative or negative) anytime soon.

“There’s nothing to confirm because there’s nothing going on. If that blurry blob of whatever really was them, then so what? They could be just hanging out. It’s not impossible for a man and a woman to just be friends/workmates,” reasoned one K-netizen.

On the other camp, fans are going wild.

“ok am i thE ONLY ONE WHO WANTS THIS TO BE TRUE?!?!?!! i’ve seen their stages and i think they’d be a cute couple!!!! #confirmthisrelationship #please,” another K-netizen exclaimed.

More evidence? Back in 2011, when Sakura collapsed after Kunoichi’s concert in Konoha Arena, Kage were in the middle of promotional activities in Earth Country, but the day after, Sasuke (and Naruto) were already back in Konoha. Some people even claim spotting Sasuke bringing a pillow to Konoha General Hospital where Sakura was confined. In addition, recently Sakura has been spotted visiting the Leaf Gallery where Uchiha Mikoto (Sasuke’s mother) is a director. The two seem to be very friendly based on the photos Mikoto posted on her Instagram page.

But for all we know, this could all be just a huge coincidence and that they really are just friends.

REVIEW: Sakura’s Courage braves into more adventurous sounds, more intimate songwriting angles 31-Mar-2013

Up to this point, the Konoha pop scene has often been disregarded for producing fluff pieces that would always shy away from hard-cutting themes. Sakura’s appropriately titled sophomore offering Courage is a bold example of stepping up to the challenge by baring her doubts and vulnerabilities, and finding comfort in the person underneath it all. With the sonically diverse musical styles experimenting with folk, electronica, R&B, and classical music, Courage’s sound echoes the complexity of the artist within Sakura.

When Sakura softly sings, “Women have to be strong in order to survive,” on the title track Courage, even with a distinctive, almost tremulously emotive voice, it was no soft declaration, and it sets the tone for the rest of the album.

Having debuted as one-fourth of Kunoichi, KG Entertainment’s first girl group fresh after the overwhelming international success of its flagship group Kage, she has been thoroughly judged by the public through a microscope since she was 19. In the years following their debut, she was often mocked for her appearance and presentation, and their group’s success was often questioned as only riding on the coattails of the boy group before them. Moreover, she is involved in an ongoing “dating scandal” with a member of said boy group.

This preface is a necessary evil because as we now arrive with Courage, we recognize that Sakura’s declaration is no small feat. Sakura addresses the frankly, oddly obsessive level of hatred directed at her in the tongue-in-cheek and drone-like, “And all I do is cry, and all I do is cry, and all I do is cry” hook of Useless repeated ad nauseam, sandwiched in between verses that are a litany of her supposed faults. In addition, the chill-inducing restraint as she sings in a silky voice, “Smile to ease out of a situation / Even if it’s fake,” in Fake Smiles gives the audience a glimpse of what’s underneath the glitter and glamour of the star: a human, working through the anger and hurt all the while having to appear pristine and perfect.

Maturity is certainly a theme in Courage, and in the time between this and Sakura’s debut solo album Love Throughout, she has undergone relationship rumors and scandals. The veracity of these rumors notwithstanding, heartache can be found in Courage, specifically with the songs 181 and Maybe Next Time, about distance and pining. Softly sung with Sakura’s gentle and emotive voice, like a secret—they’re infinitely intriguing.

With Courage, Sakura isn’t afraid to show moments of self-doubt, insecurity, and loneliness. An album like this proves the importance to have musicians explore deeply into themselves and express themselves in compelling ways, to show the humanity underneath all the glossy production, and gorgeous visuals.

On the June 25 webisode of “The Road of Life,” Haruno Sakura visited a fan who has a dream of becoming a singer-songwriter.

The episode began showing the daily routine of Moegi Kazamatsuri, the fan. Sakura surprised her with a basket of goodies that she handpicked herself, moving Moegi to tears.

Once she had calmed down with Sakura’s words, the two quickly became comfortable with each other, with Moegi saying that she’s usually shy around new people but she felt immediately at ease with Sakura. Moegi began to explain the inferiority complex she feels and how hard it is to break into the industry. “It’s like no matter how much I try to raise myself up, there’s always going to be another wall that I need to overcome,” Moegi said. “At the moment, that wall is the feeling of never having anything good or important to say. People who want to get in the industry all have unique voices and stories to tell. But I don’t even know what I’m trying to be, let alone who I am.”

Hearing Moegi’s words, Sakura empathized because she said she has felt that way at some point, and that she still does every now and then. She began to talk about the rejections she had faced before she was finally signed as a trainee. “I can’t even count how many companies I have tried to audition for,” she laughed. “It was definitely a lot for a 12-year-old. I kept wondering if there was something wrong with me, if maybe people who make it innately have something, and that perhaps I’ll never have it—whatever it is.”

Sakura added, “But performing and writing was something that I have always enjoyed. My mom says I’ve been making up songs ever since I learned how to speak. Being able to express my thoughts is a good release for me. I’m sure you know that feeling.” Moegi agreed.

“As for them being good or important, those standards are too ambiguous and arbitrary. You can never please everybody, so you might as well just do what you think is you—your thoughts, your experiences. You are the only one in the world who is you, so that alone makes you and whatever you say important. I think if there’s at least one person out there who listens and finds something compelling in what I do, then that’s how I know I’ve chosen the right path,” Sakura said.

The conversation took on a lighter note when Moegi started to ask Sakura about her creative process and how she finds inspiration. “I do try to write from experiences, although not in a literal sense,” Sakura explained. “I wrote about “Tearfully pleading in the middle of the night/ Don’t go” in my previous album, but I have never really experienced that when I wrote it. It was more about my hopes at that time. Not that I hope to tearfully plead to someone! (laughs) I mean, I guess I hoped to feel that kind of all-encompassing love towards someone.

“So while Love Throughout was about my hopes, I tried to be as genuine as I can in Courage. The songs here really are my own experiences and thoughts. I tried to be personal and vulnerable in this album, and then tried to find strength in that vulnerability. I think that’s what I was going for,” Sakura added.

This revelation prompted Moegi to ask if the story behind Sakura’s hit ballad “Maybe Next Time” from her latest album really happened to her. “Were you really in mutual pining with someone?” To this, Sakura blushed, “I guess I dug my own grave here! (laughs) It was a situation where we weren’t in the position to pursue anything even if we both wanted to, not at the moment at least.”

As the night ended, Sakura posed for a photo with Moegi before walking her home. The two shared a big warm hug before saying goodbye.

Uchiha Sasuke and Haruno Sakura Caught Up in Dating Rumors Once Again + Affiliates Respond

Uchiha Sasuke and Haruno Sakura are caught up in dating rumors once again, and sources close to the two idols finally respond.

On an online community, one exchange student reported that Uchiha Sasuke and Haruno Sakura were spotted together in Snow Country. Haruno Sakura was there from February 9 to 12, while Uchiha Sasuke was seen on February 13. Some outlets reported seeing the two together in Kazahana, before returning to Konoha separately with a three-day gap between their flights.

On February 20, Haruno Sakura’s affiliates stated, “Haruno Sakura had promotional activities for the movie ‘The Strong 100’, where she is set to appear in. The schedule was tight and it would have been impossible to meet with Uchiha Sasuke. The two are not dating.”

Uchiha Sasuke’s camp also denied the rumors stating, “Mr. Uchiha went to Snow Country for a project, not to meet Ms. Haruno.”

This is not the first time that dating rumors about Uchiha Sasuke and Haruno Sakura have surfaced. However, while rumors in the past have been denied by their label KGE, this is the first time that sources from the two idols have outright denied it.

Uchiha Sasuke and Haruno Sakura are to be married on November 5 later this year according to the statement released by their agency.

Below is the full translated statement:

“Greetings! This is KG Entertainment. We would like to extend our gratitude to the fans who have shown a lot of love for our own Uchiha Sasuke and Haruno Sakura. Moreover, we would like to ask for everyone’s understanding as we announce the news of their engagement. The Temple-stay

From the 28th of September to the 30th of September I went to a temple to live with Buddhist monks.

In the morning, Maja came over to my house and after I had taken a shower and packed my bag, we left the house at 11:10 AM, to drive to Ainhoas house, where her mom picked us all up and drove us to the temple. It took us about two and a half hours to get to the temple.

Once we arrived, we met the other exchange students and got our room numbers. I was in a room with a French an American and a Korean boy. I was in a room with the French and the American already, at the first orientation in Seoul and I'm probably going to share my room many more times with them, whenever we have trips with Rotary. The Korean was a Rotex, which means that he was on an exchange already and just volunteered to act as a supervisor. Our room was split into two different parts and the Korean slept in one part while we were in the other one, so we didn't talk that much.

After we had everything in our rooms and received our temple clothes, we got an introduction to the rules and the general behavior when we're in the temple area. 

The main rules were:

-We were only allowed to walk around in the provided clothes outside of our rooms, but we could wear our clothing underneath.

-We were supposed to hold our hands over each other, with the right hand on top, whenever we were walking on the temple's ground.

-We had to eat everything on our plates, because leaving something behind would be disrespectful, to the work somebody did to produce that food.

-We had to bow in front of every meal, to show that we respect and thank, whoever made the meal.

-If we met a monk we had to bow in front of them while putting our hands against each other. That type of greeting means that you respect the other person as they are.

-We had to wake up at 4 AM, to join the morning prayer.

-We had to go to bed at 9 PM and have our lights turned off at 9:30 PM so that we would have enough sleep to wake up the next morning.

-We had to talk as little as possible, while on the ground of the temple.

The introduction was held in a separate building (building 11) by a monk who would do some activities with us later on.  

After that we had free time, to explore the surroundings. 

At 5 PM we had to be back for dinner, which we had in the hostel-building (No.12). Before we went to bed we got to ring the big bell, that was hanging beneath a giant drum. 

They were basically in the open, just with a very pretty roof over them.

We went to our room at 9 PM and talked about the school in the different countries were coming from. It was really interesting to hear the others talk about what they get taught in the different subject. We shut our lights at around 10:30 PM and I fell asleep pretty fast.

Waking up wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. We had discussed the evening before, that we wanted to wake up at 3:30, so we’d have enough time to maybe take a shower before we go to the main building (No.7) where the ceremony would take place. When we got woken up in the morning, we got told that we'd only have to be there at 4:20, so we went back to sleep for a half an hour before we woke up and went to the temple together.

Quentin, the French boy, was finished a bit earlier than Simon, the American, and I, so we didn't find him in the beginning, but we still were the first ones to arrive at the temple. When we arrived, we did the 3 bows, like we got told in the introduction the day before. After that, we sat down, meditated and waited until the other people came, so the ceremony could begin. Just sitting there, with some monks sitting in front of us, also meditating was a very special experience. It felt so different from other experiences I've had with other religions so far because even though you had these very huge and magnificent statues, the paintings and of cause the amazing architecture around you like you also have in a church, it felt like everyone was on a similar power level. In churches, I often feel like you are just listening to someone in front telling you something about what you have to think or pray about right now. In this temple, it was very different. It was more like everyone had the same basis to believe in and of cause the same surroundings, but apart from that, everyone had a lot of free space. I personally used the time to just get calm, before the ceremony and to take up as much of my surroundings as possible.

After around 15 minutes of sitting there, the other people came in and at 4:25 one monk started to ring a bell, to signalize the beginning of the ceremony. At 4:30 it started with all monks standing up, bowing and singing. We just copied them, because nobody told us anything on how the ceremonies would happen. The ceremony itself was around ten minutes long and basically consisted of the monks singing and performing a row of bows. A complete bow in a temple like this isn't just a simple bend at the waist.

There are many parts to a complete bow. First, you bow with your hands put against each other in front of your chest, then you have to bring down the five major points of your body, so they touch the floor. The points are your forehead, both your elbows and your knees. You start by kneeling down while keeping your hands together, then you put down your hands on the floor. After that, you touch the floor with your forehead. You are not supposed to lift your but from your heel. When all your five points touch the floor you have to lift up your hands to the hight of your ears and turn them around there. That signalizes that you respect budda and see it as something higher than yourself. After that, you put down your hands again and stand back up. When you first come into a temple you are supposed to do three of there bows, but in the last one, before you stand up you have to close your hands in front of your chest while kneeling and touch the floor once more with your forehead. Then you end your three bows with a last normal bow, with your hands together in front of your chest.

The ceremony was as mentioned earlier around ten minutes long and we had to stand up and kneel back down over and over again. It was a very interesting experience though and I'm very glad that we got pushed to wake up so early.

After the ceremony, I went onto our room, took a shower and sat down at the lake together with Quentin until 6:30 AM. Then we had breakfast and after that, we had one hour of free time. Then we did a little walk with a woman, who was guiding our group through all the events we had. After the walk, we met with the monk that did the introduction with us. We had to go into groups of three, in which we had to give each other compliments. Each group got three elastic bands and everyone got 25 beans, with holes in them. For each compliment we got, we could put one bean onto our band, until we had a bracelet.

At 12:00 we had lunch. Afterward, we had one and a half hours of free time. When we met again with the monk at 2:30 PM we played a traditional Korean game. Before we played we each had to duel someone in "Rock, Paper, Scissors". I won against Simon, so I got on the winner team. Every team had to select a team leader and Simon and I got selected. The game itself was similar to "Mensch ärgere dich nicht" or "Ludo". Its called 윷 / 윷놀이 (Revised Romanization: Yut/Yunnori). I won't explain the rules here, but there is a Wikipedia-Article about it describing the game and its history in great detail.

We played a best of three, which my team won after a tiebreaker. We won some snacks, which we obviously shared with the other team. Then we had some free time, but we decided to keep playing until we had to go to dinner at 5 PM. 

After the dinner, we were supposed to do 108 complete bows, as part of some ritual, but the women responsible for our group asked the monks to not do the ritual and they accepted, which we all were very grateful about. Instead, we did a massage for about half an hour. I don't recall if the evening ceremony was before or after the massage, but I remember, that I liked the singing of the evening ceremonies way more because there were more monks and the sang in kind of a canon. Then we had free time and we all went down to the lake to talk, without having to whisper, like we had to when we were in the temple. 

After some time we all went to one room and kept on talking there. We went to bed way too late, which I definitely noticed, the next day, when we had to wake up at 4 AM again.

The next day I was really tired. We still went to the ceremony. After that, I took a shower and sat down at the lake together with Quentin, again. After the breakfast, we had a tea ceremony with the monk that did the introduction with us. It was very interesting and the green tea we got was also very delicious. After that, we had free time and then went back home. I tried to sleep on in the car, but I couldn't, even though we drove two and a half hours because we were dropping of Maja and Ainhoa at their homes.

Back home I didn't do very much. I went on a small walk in the evening, but then I just went to bed.

All in all, I really enjoyed the temple-stay. It was very interesting to experience the daily life of a monk, but I know for sure, that I wouldn't want to be a monk. Waking up so early every day and not having real friendships, outside of the few monks living in your temple would really take a long time for me to get used to.

#110: Ani Lorak -- Shady Lady (Ukraine 2008)

“I've just turned one more page I belong to the stage Baby, don't call me baby”

Surprisingly, for such a beloved song, I didn't really get it at first. I came off of one listening believing it was just another pop song. It took a few watches of Ani's performance for everything to fall into place.

There’s so much sass in Shady Lady; the production to the lyrics click together to tell of a woman who not only leaves her lover, but seeks to become even greater than them. The mix of drum machine and strings add to this thumping dance number; I never fail in getting endeared with those head nods.

Ani sells with gusto, and the use of light boxes are incredible. She becomes an absolute superstar on stage, and has equal parts presence and vocals. No wonder a lot of people though this deserved to win.

#109: Knez -- Adio (Montenegro 2015)

The most recent of Zeljko’s compositions stands just as solid on its own, with its own melancholic string intro and beautiful soundscape. From the opening notes, you know of the story that is to come, which the lyrics painfully convey through beautiful images of rosemary, flowers, the sea and sky.

Not only that, but the build is absolutely graceful, with the key changes working effectively to build to a tragic crescendo. The staging plays well with this, going from a serene night to a bright red dawn. Despite the energy given out through the clapping and the eagle dance, Knez and his backing vocalists still convey the pain of leaving.

And if you look closely, you can find his daughter, Kszenija, amongst them. Six years later she would end up representing Serbia in this year's contest, albeit going "Loco loco" with her bandmates!

#108: Aliona Moon -- O mie (Moldova 2013)

“Between sun and rain, thousands of colours are born But we only see clouds”

Moldova is usually known for their wacky, fun performances, but O mie shows they could slow down a bit without losing their quirks. Even the songwriter, Pasha Peferny, takes a hard turn from his cute 2012 entry, Lautar (which you should still check out, by the way!)

The beautiful lyrics really stand out, which show equal parts whimsy and light. I like the use of colors and nature to convey the ambiguity and loss at the end of a relationship. While meant to be sent in English, it's good they went for Romanian in the end--it's a beautiful language, and we have a dirth of good Romanian-language songs in Eurovision (please, more of them!).

While the staging was a bit messy at times, especially with multiple dancers helping Aliona in telling, the song still shines through with Aliona’s sweet vocals and beautiful melody. Also, it took a while for me to note how her glowing dress arose at the bridge, haha.

#107: Nina Sublatti -- Warrior (Georgia 2015)

“I’m a warrior, isolated World gonna get up and see!”

While the lyrics are a bit simplistic (especially with the random , Warrior is badassery personified. The instrumentation (refined in Sweden) amplifies the intensity of the song and its message; the opening drums gives way to a dark pop soundscape with equal parts starkness and power.

Nina maintains a resolute stance--not only in the studio cut, but also in the live performance. The dark costuming transforms her into a modern-day warrior of sorts, and the LED imagery enhances the intensity. Notably, the GF performance featured a malfunctioning smoke machine; the smoke obscured NIna and we couldn't see her for a few shots. Doesn't take away from the rest of the performance, which shows her in a much clearer light.

Also, she did mention the song was dedicated to the Georgian people--not only to become strong women, but also against the Russian occupation in the north. Intriguing political message, my friend.

#106: Loïc Nottet - Rhythm Inside (Belgium 2015)

“Be you enemy or lover? We are put here to discover...”

(One minor thing about this is how Loic kind of reminds me of Julian Quintart from Abnormal Summit--not only because of their backgrounds, but how the former is dressed. haha)

Rhythm Inside is very cool, albeit timed art pop piece really showed Belgium’s strengths in the mid 2010s. The song is minimalistic and slick, with an ambiguous message detailing the processes of life. While really cool, sometimes it can rub me off because of how cold it can become. Art pop is great, but it has to engage too.

The performance is just as refined, if a bit odd, and Loic announces himself to Europe with his skills in music and choreography. He and his backing vocalists create a pointed performance which is equally minimalist and yet fills up the stage. Very modern and cool.

Beyond the contest, Loic has had a good music career, and I've actually followed a few of his songs. Check out 29 especially; the way he sings it is so heartwrenching.

#105: Pernilla Karlsson -- När Jag Blundar (Finland 2012)

Nar jag blundar is notable for being the only song sung in Swedish since the language rule was dropped (because Finland has a Swedish-speaking minority there). It's a pity because Swedish is a beautiful language to sing in, with its accents and how it flows in music.

Beyond that, Pernilla’s song for her mother is so tender, with poetic lyrics and a sweet charm about it. The images used in there, assuring how her mother is so special and how she's the best, really touches my heart (hi mom, I love you!) and adds a sense of innocence in it.

The staging also adds to the grace; despite Pernilla's initial hesitation, it grows into a beautiful package with a nice orange-turquoise contrast and a pretty use of the wind machine in the first chorus. While I do understand how it might have not stood out, it's definitely one of the least deserved NQs of all-time.

(Also, Finland was the only Nordic to NQ that year?! That's a shame...)

#104: Hadise -- Dum Tek Tek (Turkey 2009)

"Angel, I wake up And live my dreams endlessly"

Definitely one of the more notable ethno-bops in the late 2000s, Dum Tek Tek is known for its simple structure, but good use of drums and guitar really lift this piece up. It's a bit more produced than what was offered earlier in the decade, but still holds its own.

The frequent "dum tek tek" in the refrain is quite curious; for a while I thought it actually meant something, but it turned out to be a heartbeat. Still a fun way to put it, though!

The staging is quite well done; I liked the choreography and how Hadise played with the camera. However, her backing vocalists had to help her quite a bit in the singing, because she fell ill during contest week and it showed in the vocals. The fourth place might be a bit over-the-top, but it's still enjoyable.

#103: Paula Seling & Ovi - Playing With Fire (Romania 2010)

(At that moment, A twirls around and puts his hand on B's shoulder. She stiffens before relaxing and places her fingers gingerly on A's wrist. A sudden beat)

B: I thought I told you that I needed to keep the skirt clean! A: Then why did you want to dress up like that tonight? (Beat) B: Well I wanted to go out later to a bar? A: In this climate? (sighs) B: Don't tell me you have something else in mind...

If Eurovision decides to do a jukebox musical, then Playing with Fire has to be one of the main songs in it. There's so much tension between the duo; one could make a bunch of plot points ranging from illicit affairs to a first crush and everything else in between. And then it all explodes.

On stage, the chemistry between Paula and Ovi is absolutely infectious. This adds to this dramatic bop, with flirtatious lyrics that are simultaneously fun and witty; they tease and shout at the same time. The instrumentation is dramatic (though it took me a while to appreciate the transition between the verses and the chorus), and I love the piano motif that persists throughout. Paula’s high note is fantastic; it can pierce through the transparent piano and through the stage itself. Such a dynamic duo!

#102: Koza Mostra feat. Agathon Iakovidis -- Alcohol is Free (Greece 2013)

If you remember my commentary under Opa! (#207), the Greek economic crisis impacted the country significantly. At the time of this entry, there were different negotiations about how to handle Greece's debt; when that fell through, it looked like Greece was going to leave the European Union. By the time the 2013 contest ended, the Greek public TV station, ERT, shut down for two years.

Alcohol is Free tries to describe this chaos through a number of metaphors, ranging from mermaids to whisky and everything else in between. The exclamation mark to Greece’s golden era not only has silly lyrics, but also mixes their usual ethnic sound (with rebetiko) with ska to create a very vibrant concoction. It’s a definite spark of energy whether it’s just to brighten up a day or running around with actual alcohol! (though this blog does not condone underage drinking, driving under the influence, or pressuring people to drink alcohol. Be responsible.)

#101: Anouk -- Birds (Netherlands 2013)

“If being myself is what I do wrong, then I don’t want to be right...”

When Anouk volunteered as tribute to represent the Netherlands, she was coming off after eight years of non-qualifications and with quite a bit of pressure. Birds was a little bit different from her regular discography (which I should really do a deep-dive on), and people thought it wouldn't work. Well, here's why it did.

The lyric is very hard-hitting, in terms of substance and how dark it is. I don't know exactly what Birds discusses about, but it ranges from just another relationship to suicide. I’m particularly intrigued by the dark nature of this song; the harp flourishes really toe the line in dreaminess--is it a dream, or a nightmare? However, I find it a bit cold sometimes.

Thanks to her experience, Anouk sells this really well on stage, with her soft, relaxed composure and the bird graphics creating a calm atmosphere. The flag-waving, which is a deriment towards other songs (including one coming up in the top 100), actually works towards keeping that serene nature, despite the dark undertones. And the bridge gives me all the chills; I can't help but sing along to that part.

The result? The Netherlands' first qualification and a route through which, after six years, they finally won again.

Today’s reading of the Scriptures from the New Testament is chapter 3 in the book of Luke that shares the True story of this metamorphosis:

Our story continues 15 years after Tiberius Caesar had begun his reign over the empire. Pilate was governor of Judea, Herod ruled Galilee, his brother Philip ruled Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias ruled Abilene.

In Jerusalem Annas and Caiaphas were high priests in the temple. And in those days, out in the wilderness, John (son of Zacharias) received a message from God.

John brought this divine message to all those who came to the Jordan River. He preached that people should be ritually cleansed through baptism as an expression of changed lives for the forgiveness of sins. As Isaiah the prophet had said,

In fulfillment of those words, crowds streamed out from the villages and towns to be baptized by John at the Jordan.

John the Baptist: You bunch of venomous snakes! Who told you that you could escape God’s coming wrath? Don’t just talk of turning to God; you’d better bear the authentic fruit of a changed life. Don’t take pride in your religious heritage, saying, “We have Abraham for our father!” Listen—God could turn these rocks into children of Abraham!

God wants you to bear fruit! If you don’t produce good fruit, then you’ll be chopped down like a fruitless tree and made into firewood. God’s ax is taking aim and ready to swing!

People: What shall we do to perform works from changed lives?

John the Baptist: The person who has two shirts must share with the person who has none. And the person with food must share with the one in need.

Some tax collectors were among those in the crowd seeking baptism.

Tax Collectors: Teacher, what kind of fruit is God looking for from us?

John the Baptist: Stop overcharging people. Only collect what you must turn over to the Romans.

Soldiers: What about us? What should we do to show true change?

John the Baptist: Don’t extort money from people by throwing around your power or making false accusations, and be content with your pay.

John’s bold message seized public attention, and many began wondering if John might himself be the Anointed One promised by God.

John the Baptist: I baptize you with water, but One is coming—One far more powerful than I, One whose sandals I am not worthy to untie—who will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. He is coming like a farmer at harvesttime, tools in hand to separate the wheat from the chaff. He will burn the chaff with unquenchable fire, and He will gather the genuine wheat into His barn.

He preached with many other provocative figures of speech and so conveyed God’s message to the people—the time had come to rethink everything. But John’s public preaching ended when he confronted Herod, the ruler of Galilee, for his many corrupt deeds, including taking Herodias, the ruler’s sister-in-law, as his own wife. Herod responded by throwing John into prison.

But before John’s imprisonment, when he was still preaching and ritually cleansing through baptism the people in the Jordan River, Jesus also came to him to be baptized. As Jesus prayed, the heavens opened, and the Holy Spirit came upon Him in a physical manifestation that resembled a dove. A voice echoed out from heaven.

Voice from Heaven: You are My Son, the Son I love, and in You I take great pleasure.

At this, the launch of Jesus’ ministry, Jesus was about 30 years old.

Zophar: Shall such a great volume of words remain unanswered

and a long-winded man be so easily acquitted?

Shall your empty prattle silence people,

and when you mock, shall no one shame you?

You’ve told us, “I have a clear understanding of things,

and I am innocent in Your eyes, O Lord.”

Ah, but I wish God would speak,

that He would address you openly, so I will argue for Him.

I wish He would show you the secrets of great wisdom—

for the two sides of sound wisdom are both found in His mercy and justice.

Know this: God forgets some of your guilt.

Can you see to the unseen side of God,

or explore the limits of the Highest One’s knowledge?

Higher than the heavens—what can you do to reach it?

If He passes by, as is His routine, and throws you into prison,

so do you really think when He sees wrongdoing He doesn’t examine it?

As they say, “The empty-headed will become clever

in the day the colt of a wild donkey is born human!”

If you will focus your intentions in His direction

and open your hands and reach for Him,

Where you have guilt on your hands,

if you will send it far away and not tolerate sin in your tents,

Then you will lift up a face clean of all stains;

you will hold your head high, secure, and free of fear.

You will forget all of these troubles of yours;

they will pass beneath your memory like a drop of water that has just flowed away.

Life will become brighter than high noon;

darkness will give way to morning.

Once again, you’ll trust in the presence of hope;

you’ll scan the horizon and sleep safely.

You will lie down, and no one will terrorize you,

and many will long to be in your good graces.

The First Day of the Week

“And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight.” (Acts 20:7)

Given the fact that everything about God’s Word was specifically inspired by its Author, it is appropriate that this important phrase, “the first day of the week,” occurs exactly eight times in the Bible. The first six of these (Matthew 28:1; Mark 16:2, 9; Luke 24:1; John 20:1, 19) all stress the fact that it was on this day that the greatest event in history (since the creation) had taken place. The creation of the universe had taken place on the first day of the week, and now its Creator had conquered sin and death itself on that day. In the Bible, of course, the number “seven” represents completeness, so “eight” represents a new beginning—a new creation, a resurrection.

The last two references tell us just how the early Christians remembered this day. Our text verse tells us this was a day on which the disciples assembled together, had a preaching service, and then “broke bread.” This was not a special assembly called just for Paul, for he had already been waiting there x days (see the previous verse). This was about 25 years after the resurrection itself, and the Jewish believers were evidently still observing the seventh day as a rest day, but then they also observed the first day of the week as the time to commemorate the Lord’s death in “breaking of bread” to celebrate His resurrection and especially to hear the preaching of His Word. The final reference tells us one other vital thing they did: “Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him” (1 Corinthians 16:2). The first day of the week should always be a time of remembering Him in these joyful ways, for He is our living Lord and Savior. HMM
