#but now it seems like they're still a friend group but just evil
Text
The thing is the recent episode gave us the most confirmation that the rat grinders are doing evil shit and it still made me like them more than I ever have before.
And that's made me come to the conclusion that I just love a fucking friend group. I don't care what their motivations are. They had a clubhouse.
They plotted and schemed and bitched about the new guy in their private group chats. Together. How fucking fun is that?
Good for them. I hope they had snack runs. I hope Mary Ann has a little pile of plushies there that she burrows into to take naps when they've been up late concocting.

one of the things that i think we should pay attention to, socially, about the disney v. desantis thing is that it is really highlighting the importance of remembering nuance.
in a purely neutral sense, if you engage in something problematic, that does not mean you are necessarily agreeing with what makes it problematic. and i am worried that we have become... so afraid of any form of nuance.
disney isn't my friend, they're a corporate monopoly that bastardized copyright laws for their own benefit, ruin the environment, and abuse their workers (... and many other things). this isn't a hypothetical for me - i grew up in florida. i also worked for the actual Walt Disney World; like, in the parks. i am keenly aware of the ways they hurt people, because they hurt me. i fully believe that part of the reason florida is so conservative is because it's been an "open secret" for years now that disney lobbies the government to keep minimum wage down, and i know they worked hard to keep the parks unmasked and open during the worst parts of Covid. they purposefully keep their employees in poverty. they are in part responsible for the way the floridian government works.
desantis is still, by a margin that is frankly daunting, way worse. the alternative here isn't just "republicans win", it's actual fascism.
in a case like this, where the alternative is to allow actual fascism into united states legislation - where, if desantis wins, there are huge and legal ramifications - it's tempting to minimize the harm disney is also doing, because... well, it's not fascism. but disney isn't the good guy, either, which means republicans are having a field day asking activists oh, so you think their treatment of their employees is okay?
we have been trained there is a right answer. you're right! you're in the good group, and you're winning at having an opinion.
except i have the Internet Prophecy that in 2-3 months, even left-wing people will be ripping apart activists for having "taken disney's side". aren't i an anti-capitalist? aren't i pro-union? aren't i one of the good ones? removed from context and nuance (that in this particular situation i am forced to side with disney, until an other option reveals itself), my act of being like "i hope they have goofy rip his throat out onstage, shaking his lifeless body like a dog toy" - how quickly does that seem like i actually do support disney?
and what about you! at home, reading this. are you experiencing the Thought Crime of... actually liking some of the things disney has made? your memories of days at the parks, or of good movies, or of your favorite show growing up. maybe you are also evil, if you ever enjoyed anything, ever, at all.
to some degree, the binary idealization/vilification of individual motive and meaning already exists in the desantis case. i have seen people saying not to go to the disney pride events because they're cash grabs (they are). i've seen people saying you have to go because they're a way to protest. there isn't a lot of internet understanding of nuance. instead it's just "good show of support" or "evil bootlicking."
this binary understanding is how you can become radicalized. when we fear nuance and disorder, we're allowing ourselves the safety of assuming that the world must exist in binary - good or bad, problematic or "not" problematic. and unfortunately, bigots want you to see the world in this binary ideal. they want you to get mad at me because "disney is taking a risk for our community but you won't sing their praises" and they want me to get mad at you for not respecting the legit personal trauma that disney forced me through.
in a grander scheme outside of disney: what happens is a horrific splintering within activist groups. we bicker with each other about minimal-harm minimal-impact ideologies, like which depiction of bisexuality is the most-true. we gratuitously analyze the personal lives of activists for any sign they might be "problematic". we get spooked because someone was in a dog collar at pride. we wring our hands about setting an empty shopping mall on fire. we tell each other what words we may identify ourselves by. we get fuckin steven universe disk horse when in reality it is a waste of our collective time.
the bigots want you to spend all your time focusing on how pristine and pretty you and your interests are. they want us at each other's throats instead of hand in hand. they want to say see? nothing is ever fucking good enough for these people.
and they want their followers to think in binary as well - a binary that's much easier to follow. see, in our spaces, we attack each other over "proper" behavior. but in bigoted groups? they attack outwards. they have someone they hate, and it is us. they hate you, specifically, and you are why they have problems - not the other people in their group. and that's a part of how they fucking keep winning.
some of the things that are beloved to you have a backbone in something terrible. the music industry is a wasteland. the publishing industry is a bastion of white supremacy. video games run off of unpaid labor and abuse.
the point of activism was always to bring to light that abuse and try to stop it from happening, not to condemn those who engage in the content that comes from those industries. "there is no ethical consumption under late capitalism" also applies to media. your childhood (and maybe current!) love of the little mermaid isn't something you should now flinch from, worried you'll be a "disney adult". wanting the music industry to change for the better does not require that you reject all popular music until that change occurs. you can acknowledge the harm something might cause - and celebrate the love that it has brought into your life.
we must detach an acknowledgment of nuance from a sense of shame and disgust. we must. punishing individual people for their harmless passions is not doing good work. encouraging more thoughtful, empathetic consumption does not mean people should feel ashamed of their basic human capacities and desires. it should never have even been about the individual when the corporation is so obviously the actual evil. this sense that we must live in shame and dread of our personal nuances - it just makes people bitter and hopeless. do you have any idea how scared i am to post this? to just acknowledge the idea of nuance? that i might like something nuanced, and engage in it joyfully? and, at the same time, that i'm brutally aware of the harm that they're doing?
"so what do i do?" ... well, often there isn't a right answer. i mean in this case, i hope mickey chops off ron's head and then does a little giggle. but truth be told, often our opinions on nuanced subjects will differ. you might be able to engage in things that i can't because the nuance doesn't sit right with me. i might think taylor swift is a great performer and a lot of fun, and you might be like "raquel, the jet fuel emissions". we are both correct; neither of us have any actual sway in this. and i think it's important to remember that - the actual scope of individual responsibility. like, i also love going to the parks. Thunder Mountain is so fun. you (just a person) are not responsible for the harm that Disney (the billion dollar corporation) caused me. i don't know. i think it's possible to both enjoy your memories and interrogate the current state of their employment policies.
there is no right way to interrogate or engage with nuance - i just hope you embrace it readily.

Astarion x gn!Tav
Summary: Young Arabella comes to stay at the camp during the trip through the Shadow-Cursed Lands. Her curious questions affect Astarion more than it should.
Based on this post by the-phantom-otaku
Thank you to my lovely friend Ayselluna for requesting this fic sorry it took me so long. Hopefully you like it.

The camp is as lively as it always is. Gale is working away on the group's supper, Wyll giving him unwarranted pointers. Karlach is trying to sneak spoonfuls of the unfinished stew only to have her hand slapped away dramatically with a spoon. Shadowheart is in her evening prayer, and Haslin sits beside her in contemplation. Scratch and the owlbear cub are playfully wrestling in a mud puddle. The grinding sound of Lae'zel sharpening her sword echoes through the camp.
Astarion clenches his jaw, hands tightening against the leather binding of the book Tav had gifted him last week. He hated this time of evening the most when it was too late to keep moving on their journey but too late to hide away in his tent. Not that it would have stopped him before, but things have changed. Or maybe he had changed because he was waiting for them instead of tucking himself away.
Tav.
Because they should have been back by now, Tav had said they would only say hello to the skeleton. Something about 'Not wanting him to feel lonely.' It's a thing only Tav would think about because who cares about a reanimated skeleton besides Tav? But that was almost thirty minutes ago, and these woods left a sickly feeling lingering in the air. Astarion was familiar with darkness, but these shadowlands were filled with malice and evil, still not fully comprehended.
Astarion should find them. Ensure they're not trying to bring home an orphaned squirrel, stray cat, or whatever Tav seems to get up to when he's not watching. Make sure they're safe so he can quell the fire of anxiety that's eating away at him.
But as Astarion is tossing his book down to leave, Tav emerges from the red foliage. Their face is stretched into a soft, beaming smile, and the moon's glow cascades down in dim rays. Gods, they're always so breathtakingly beautiful that he doesn't think he'll ever get enough.
Tav shakes their head and speaks down. That's when Astarion notices the small tiefling child holding their hand. He recognizes her from the grove, Arabella. He smirked when he remembered her attempted robbery of that artifact from those testy druids. Then the images of her parents lying stiff in those dirty cots press forward into his mind, and he has to look away.
Now that he knows Tav is safe, he tries to focus back on the book. It wasn't anything special, just a romance novel about a dashing pirate and a blushing maiden. But Tav had gone out of their way to keep his collection filled with new material so he would not complain about the lackluster writing.
Astarion was halfway through the chapter by the time someone had approached. By smell, he knew it wasn't Tav, so he ignored them and hoped they would take the message and move along.
They didn't because soon there was a tug at his sleeve and a small clearing of one's throat.
"Hey, you!"
Astarion lowered the book and looked down to find Arabella looking expectantly up at him.
"Yes, hello," Astarion says cordially before pressing his face back into the book.
If he was being honest, children unnerved him. After being entombed for that long, painful year trying to save that young boy, he did everything in his power to steer clear of them. Astarion's hoping if he ignores the young girl long enough, she'll get bored and move on to bother the next party member.
However, the little tiefling wouldn't be swayed so easily.
"You look sick."
Astarion freezes and stares unblinkingly at the girl. "Excuse me?"
"Yeah, you're pale, sickly pale. You have dark circles under your eyes, and even your cheeks look kinda hollow. Are you okay?"
Now Astarion is thoroughly offended. Scoffing, he crosses his arms and sticks his nose in the air.
"I'm a vampire. I can't get sick." However, Astarion betrays his confidence by bringing one hand up to his face to prod at the skin under his eye.
"Really?" Arabella says in surprise, causing Astarion to snap his gaze down to the child. "Aren't vampires supposed to look young?"
Now fuming and outright pissed, Astarion sees the ghost of a smirk on the tiefling's face.
"Listen here, you little sh–"
"Astarion!" Tav interrupts, walking up behind and touching the girl's shoulder warmly.
"What? The little shit started it!"
Tav gives him a pointed look that he knows means he needs to calm down, or he will be in the dog house tonight.
"I didn't mean to upset him, ma'am," Arabella says, all sickly sweet, playing into your caring side. "I was just curious. I've never met a vampire before."
"No, the little devil-"
"Astarion," Tav warns, forcing him to bite his tongue. "Don't mind him, Arabella. Let's get you something to eat. Gale made a beef stew tonight."
Tav offers the young girl her hand, and as the two walk away, Arabella sends a smirk over her shoulder and sticks out her tongue, taunting him. Astarions hand twitches towards his dagger, wanting to teach the twerp a lesson, but he takes a deep breath and turns on his heel, storming into the tent.
By the time Tav retires for the night, Astarion is tucked away in the corner of the tent. He's glaring daggers at the hand mirror grasped tightly in his hand, willing the glass to show his reflection. Nimble fingers are poking and prodding and pulling at the skin under his eyes and around his face, trying to pick apart any details he could not see.
A deep frown pulls at his lips and creases his brow. Astarion's shoulders are slumped, betraying how much Arabella's words have affected him. It wasn't a secret the man was vain and took pride in his appearance. To have a child pick apart his insecurities left him upset and wanting nothing more than to see his face just once more.
Astarion is pulled from his brooding thoughts when he feels two arms snake around his middle and the soft press of kisses peppered up his neck. Instinctively, he melts into Tav's touch, still astonished by the simplicity of this new relationship.
"Hey, handsome," Tav breathes into his ear, pressing one more fleeting kiss just below before pulling away to get ready for bed.
He absentmindedly greets them, still too focused on his internal conflict. Out of the corner of his eye, he watches Tav strip bare and move around, tossing random bits and bobs to find their night clothes. Once they're dressed, Tav stops and stands in the middle of the tent. He can feel them staring at him as he's transfixed on the empty mirror.
"Astarion,"
"Do I look sick?" He drops the mirror and turns to face Tav. "Do I look hollow and pale…old?" His voice trails off at the end, and he's unsure if he wants to know the answer, but it's eating away at him.
Tav's eyes soften. "Was that what Arabella said to you?"
Pity. He could see it in Tav's eyes, and he recoiled, disgust curdling in his gut.
Astarion scoffs." Please, Tav, I don't need your pity."
Tav grabs his hand and pulls him close. "There is no pity. Understanding yes. But not pity."
"It's all the same." Astarion looks down.
"No, but that's beside the point. Arabella is a child Star. They will say the most insulting things without realizing it or just because they know it will hurt. Do you want to know what I see?"
Astarion nods softly, holding onto the hem of Tav's shirt. He knows he's being foolish, but Astarion wants the reassurance that Tav is happy to give.
Tav cups his cheek, forcing him to meet their eyes. "Your face might look hollow to Arabella, but I see your high cheekbones and sharp jawline," Tav emphasizes their point by trailing a thumb against his jaw and pulling Astarion into a fleeting kiss. "Not to mention everything those lips and tongue have done to me."
Astarion smirked and chased after Tav's lips, pouting when he was denied.
Tav's hands trail down his chest and slip under his shirt, splaying against his cold skin. Astarion lets out a shaky breath. "Yes, you are pale, perhaps at times sickly. But I love it because after you've finished feeding, I see that beautiful flush covering your body."
"Maybe you have laugh lines and forehead creases that a little girl would consider old. But if you ask me? Astarion, when I see you smile and laugh, gods, it's the sexiest thing in the world. Because it shows me that you're happy and safe and here with me."
Tav has now thrown their arms over Astarion's shoulders and has pulled their body flush against his. Astarion is at a loss for words, especially when Tav looks at him with such love. Tav kisses him softly, and he tightens his hold, wanting nothing more than to meld into their body.
"So, who cares what a child thinks? You are beautiful, and between the two of us. I'm going to be the one worrying about wrinkles, not you, mister immortal vampire."
"Thank you, my love," Astarion whispered against Tav's lips, smiling into another sweet kiss.
"Let's lay down. I think it's time to cuddle, don't you think?"
Astarion's insecurities fade for the night because how can the darkness stand a chance when he has Tav as his guiding light?
Just something short and sweet while I'm in the middle of moving. Sorry if anyone felt ooc. Let me know what you guys thought of it.

Anya + unraveling the mystery of the Desmond family (and Damian being different)
When Melinda debuted, I wrote a post about how she was potentially a character against the Forgers because Anya hadn't met her (we gain insight into characters via our deus ex machina Anya meeting them and reading their minds). Anya has met her now and the narrative has established that she genuinely cares for Damian (even if she's still a mysterious character).
After a long time, Demetrius is finally here. He's still mysterious, but not antagonistic to his brother and still cares for him. Like I said in a previous post, Demetrius subverts what I said above because Anya cannot read him fully even if she's met him. But regardless, Demetrius is here, we've seen him, all four Desmonds have finally debuted. And in my mind, I can vaguely connect them to the Forger-Briar extended family:
Anya - Damian: The kids aiming for stella stars and seeking parental approval. Attached to their dogs. Occasionally heroic (dodgeball, handkerchief, bus hijacking), but ultimately silly kids dragged into "adult" political matters (Anya with more awareness than Damian).
Loid - Donovan: Standing in for WISE vs war, one of the central conflicts. They are fathers and authority figures. Loid, faking a job as a psychiatrist, seeks to understand people (as a fake job, but he also does this as a spy). Donovan famously declared that people would never truly sympathize with each other. A good, attentive father and a neglectful father.
Yor - Melinda: The mothers, the narrative kind of puts them in the background compared to their husbands, but we know they have plot behind them. Yor's job as an assassin is unknown to her family (sans Anya). Melinda has struggles of her own when it comes to parenting her kids / being married to Donovan.
Demetrius - Yuri: Bit of a stretch, but they're both characterized as genius brothers and on the side compared to the main father-mother-child trios. Yuri works for the SSS, in direct opposition to Loid. Demetrius is a middle schooler?? He’s a child so he’s probably not that involved in the main plot, and if he is, it’s not willingly / he was brought up that way. They're both younger (and less experienced) compared to the adults- Demetrius is still a child and Yuri is 20. Yuri's affection for Yor is overflowing and the Briar siblings are very supportive of each other. In contrast, Demetrius is passive and apathetic, but not uncaring.
Anya has met everyone except for Donovan. Anya thinks both Melinda and Demetrius are weird. And Anya thinks of Donovan as the evil super boss. To her, the Desmonds are "weird". "All of Sy-on boy's relatives are such weirdos" - not sure if it's just the translation, but this line seems to imply Anya thinks Damian is exempt to the weirdness of his family. After all, unlike Demetrius, she can read Damian's thoughts normally. And unlike Melinda (and Yuri, and Fiona), she usually doesn't get bombarded with an overwhelming wave of intense thoughts when she reads Damian's mind.
And that brings us to the next point - Damian's time in Eden and the positive influences he receives (away from his family). Damian and Anya are better friends now. E&E's loyalty and affection for him have been established countless times. Becky congratulates Damian this chapter. Despite Damian thinking people suck up to him to get close to his father, he has a group of friends who do care about him (including Becky who doesn't suck up to him). Outside of what we see from Anya's pov, Damian has teachers and his dorm mother (Jeeves too) who care for him. Damian isn't alone.
Damian is shown to be disconnected from his family for whatever reason. His parents didn't come to his orientation. Damian says he doesn't see his parents often. Melinda cares for Damian but isn't allowed to see him often / afraid to be seen with him (?). Damian has called Demetrius before but this is the first time we see him meet Demetrius in person. And we all know about Damian's goal of impressing his father. Damian seems to believe Demetrius and Donovan when close when they were younger (when Demetrius was slightly older than Damian’s age), but Damian receives no such attention. Despite this, Damian still manages to have a fairly happy school life with his friends and supportive adult figures.
I think Damian's growing friendship with Anya and the recent complete reveal of the Desmond family will push Anya into thinking Damian is not like his weird family. If anything, Damian is more like Anya and her associates. Post bus-hijacking, Damian from Anya's POV is seen as more likeable / sympathetic, even more so now that we know about his mother and brother.
Anya is a child who is exposed to some of the darkness in Melinda / Demetrius' heads (trauma from being close to Donovan?), and she doesn't really understand them. Melinda / Demetrius seem off to outsiders (we saw Yor’s reaction, Becky thinks Demetrius is creepy) but it’s only Anya who’s capable of reading their minds and knowing how weird their thoughts are. But Anya has a much better understanding of Damian, the youngest Desmond, who is a kid like her with understandable motivations (getting stars, impressing his dad) similar to Anya's own motivations.
Interesting to note that Demetrius, while at Eden, seems rather lonely and disconnected even within his peer group. When he walks down the stairs, the panel frames it as him being alone, while Damian has four friends with him. When Damian and Anya get their stars, their classmates are shown to be smiling / impressed. When Demetrius gets his stars, we see two of his peers sweatdropping, almost looking wary, while a blushing girl has her hands to her mouth. The story doesn't show Demetrius' peers celebrating his success. It feels like Demetrius' peers are used to him getting good grades but still in awe of how good he is, but... they're not really close to him. Demetrius is not social and says he doesn't understand people, and maybe he doesn't interact much with his peers.
This chapter also reveals Demetrius is not in regular contact with Donovan anymore, contrary to what Damian believed. So Demetrius seems removed from the Desmond family sphere, but also isn't super integrated into the Eden sphere (in contrast to his 6yo brother and his friends). We can believe Demetrius isn’t close to Donovan because he is annoyed (and triggered?) by the mere mention of his father. Clearly Donovan has done something scarring to both Melinda and Demetrius and their thoughts look weird to Anya. Damian, despite craving for his father's attention and being stressed about it, is still relatively unaffected.
From now on, I think we'll slowly get more information about the Desmonds while Damian remains separated from them in the narrative. Damian is introduced as a vital part of Plan B due to his connection with his father, but even Damian himself admits there's not much of a connection. Plan B is working (sort of) because Damianya are friends, but that doesn't mean it's easier for Anya to meet Donovan. I think the narrative has been pushing Damian away from being a plot device for Plan B to being Anya's genuine friend and a victim of the Desmond parenting. At this point, Damian is not really useful to the main plot and there's not much mystery to this 6yo child.
Damian still thinks of himself as a scion of the Desmonds and he’s desperately trying to get his father’s attention. But his dad doesn’t really care, his mom loves him but doesn’t want him to be near Donovan, his brother is similar and also seemingly doesn’t want anything to do with Donovan. Meanwhile, the story establishes him as a boy with a crush on Anya, a boy with friends who will readily sacrifice themselves for him, a boy who’s willing to protect his classmates. All around Damain, his peers, associates, and the story itself has long been defining Damian as someone outside of being the Desmond family. But Damian naturally holds onto it.
Damian isn’t mysterious to Anya because she can read him. Okay, she still thinks he’s a brat sometimes, but that’s Damain being Damian, not Damian being a Desmond. But everyone else in the family is mysterious and it makes Anya feel at least vaguely uncomfortable.
The Desmonds are probably connected to Project Apple, and with the recent hints of Anya’s backstory, we might get some of that. But Damian is framed as almost completely separate to whatever went on, while Melinda and Demetrius are portrayed as victims of Donovan, mysterious and a bit weird but still sympathetic.
And that’s why I think it’s coming together— hints of Anya’s backstory, Damianya becoming better friends, the Desmonds all here. We’ve scratched the surface off and we’re hopefully going to see more.
(Also, just a thought: if Damian indeed goes through a “dark arc” and becomes more like the rest of his family, Anya will know because she can read his mind. She will be able to tell if Damian’s thoughts also start being “weird”. But they are better friends now which could be a lead up to her helping Damian deal with the pressure and struggle.)

thank you for all the posts you've made, your takes are always so refreshing to hear.
I want to know your thoughts (if it's okay with you, you can also totally ignore this) about all the "men hate" I see online. like I (poc transmasc non-passing) get it, there are genuine societal gender problems. transmisogyny does exist-women face more challenges than men do. but it genuinely hurts when women, especially trans women, think it's funny/quirky to call men trash or say they want all men dead or whatever. idk I just am hoping someone else understands, you know?
There's a lot of nuances to this question. First, I just want to caution against focusing too much on trans girls as the perpetrators of this. A lot of the asks I get from trans men seem to really fixate on trans women as the perpetrators of hard line gender essentialism. I really think trans girls are not the main people we should be focusing on here. If a trans woman is saying this stuff, take the time to analyze her ideology outside of that pithy comment and consider how much trauma and how little power she has in the world. That said, trans women are affected by this kind of ideology just like us, and they rarely have the power to wield it against others in the way cis people can. I know it hurts to feel isolated by your own community, but that kinda gets into my second point.
Part of dealing with this is learning an impulse progressive cishet dude have had to get used to over the decade. Sometimes, "men are trash" or even "kill all men" are not literal phrases. They are things women say when they're in the throes of trauma to vent their frustration. "Men are trash" in particular is generally pretty lighthearted and used to complain when you have a bad date or something. You have to get used to analyzing what someone actually means and airing on the side of empathy. You, as a man, are the one with some amount of systemic power over that woman, so you are the one who needs to prove you are dedicated to not being a misogynist. The same thing happens when my friends say they hate white people. I have to assume they don't hate me given that I'm their friend, but that I still have some of the negative traits of whiteness. I need to care enough to be a good friend by being anti-racist and checking myself on my behavior. I need to be willing to prioritize their comfort over mine. That includes not becoming this meme:
Tumblr media
Now that that's established, there ARE times when "all men are evil and should die" is an actual ideology. It's an ideology that hurts tons of minority groups before it hurts the most powerful, but it's also not really great if we assume it only hurts cishet white guys. Following it to its logical conclusion, it just proposes a reversal of oppression dynamics. This gender essentialism is a key part of radical feminism, trans exclusionary or not, but it leaks out of that community to general feminism all the time.
As a young person on Tumblr and Twitter, this deeply affected me. I internalized the idea that you can "just be a girl." It was repeated by some trans girls, but also a LOT of TME people. It was framed as trans inclusive, but it's trans inclusive in the way "political lesbianism" is lesbian positive. It posits gender as a moral choice that is completely up to the individual and unrelated to biology. It's the lazy version of "gender is a social construct." I felt sick and disgusting for wanting to be a boy because tons of well-meaning friends of mine had made it clear that "being a boy" was a choice, and it was the wrong one. "Boy" was a social category that could and should eventually be eradicated. Trans women were conditionally supported because they, in theory, made this future possible. This didn't amount to actual support, of course. It was an ideology mostly spread by afab queer people that mostly benefited afab queer people. There were a few trans girls who spread it, maybe some due to genuinely believing in the ideology and some due to social pressure, but there were also a lot of people straight-up grifting as trans girls who used this thinking to feel powerful in a niche community of teens. Remember fucking Yandere Bitch Club???
At a certain point, I genuinely thought of being a man as an unambiguous moral failing, and I lashed out at out trans men because of it. I wanted to feel powerful, and here was a type of man in my community I could shame and exclude. I still feel bad for making a bunch of ~girls only~ stuff in HS that excluded the one out trans dude at our school, my friend, because he was just a ~binary man~ and leaving him with no friends and no community. I treated transphobia like it wasn't a real oppression on its own and, in doing so, perpetuated transphobia. It happens a lot.
I wasn't really able to accept that there was nuance to the concept of manhood until I read this article while struggling to accept my own gender:
This is a pretty seminal piece of writing. It has its flaws, of course, but the empathy and intersectionality it highlights was life-changing. It also shows that this kind of thinking is largely perpetuated by TME people and hurts trans women greatly.
Gender essentialism is a bad ideology, it's a transphobic, transmisogynist, racist, etc etc ideology. It's literally essential to patriarchy. But it's also very easy to repackage into leftism and easy to dogwhistle. As a result, it's natural to be hesitant when you see someone saying they hate all men, but you have to tread extremely lightly and actually care what they're attempting to express. Because, yeah, men as a social class still hold power over women. They still have reason to fear and hate men.
I'm writing a comic about this stuff, actually, so look out for it in the future..........

There’s a 50/50 chance that he’ll stay and chat for a while or he’ll say he can’t chat cause he’s still working.
Sometimes he doesn’t get back to you for a few days. If you’re lucky, he’ll message you within hours. If it is taking him a few days, there’s a good chance you may need to check up on him. Sometimes he loses himself when he’s too focused on working.
On some nights, you two video call on Discord while you’re both working. You may or may not end up getting sidetracked by playing a video game together. FPS, horror, or survival horror. So games like Left 4 Dead, Dying Light, Lethal Company, and even Halo are up there. As long as there’s co-op, you’ll be playing. Sometimes, one of you will share your screen so the other can watch. Games like The Mortuary Assistant, Resident Evil, Alien: Isolation, and Outlast are pretty good.
Going to each other’s concerts isn’t always a guarantee, but both of you try. Not to mention, the paparazzi will be annoying to deal with once people start to realize one of you is at the other’s concert.
Kayn’s not against introducing you to Akali. There’s a good chance she’s heard of you and probably listens to some of your works, so it’s a win. And so, you, Kayn, and Akali are all in a group chat where you just kinda laugh at some hate comments each of you get. It’s especially funny when the thread just keeps going with people arguing. It’s very tempting to go and leave a comment in the argument just to see how it’d go, especially since Kayn would actually try to get you and Akali to say something. Luckily neither of you actually did it. Imagine the articles and posts on social media that would be made about it…
Since this is before Kayn joined Heartsteel, Kayn does sometimes send you some of his works. You know, the ones that were never made public. He knows you accept both him and Rhaast, so think of it as his appreciation for it. Sometimes Rhaast sends ones that Kayn didn’t send yet, but in return, he wants a sneak peek at one of your own.
On that topic, you’ve kept up to date with what his old band has been up to, both before and after he was no longer a part of it. It wasn’t on purpose, it just shows up on your recommended time to time. There was some discourse, and then after Kayn was no longer there, things seemed to take a bit of a turn for the worst for both him and the band. The band was struggling and Kayn’s reputation crashed. Him not releasing his songs to the public didn’t help, but he had his reasons for that. You were in no position to pry, so all you can really do is continue supporting him.
The idea for a collab was always up there even if you’re running solo or not, but it never actually happens because Kayn and Rhaast always have drafts piled up. Rhaast just thinks it’d be pretty fun to do. But seriously, they do need to finish up their own works. A collab is the last thing he needs to add to his list right now.
Sometimes invites you to liven up an alley he found, or a wall in an abandoned building. If you have an idea for his idea, say it. He knows if you’ve got something in mind anyway, so it’d be better to just say it because he’d pester you about it. You’ll probably even notice he brings a little sketchbook sometimes. Also, those spray paints were totally not Akali’s. If you have paint as well, he’ll be taking those too. If you find some missing, you know who to interrogate. Don’t expect him to admit it though.
If you’re the one inviting him, he doesn’t mind if he just watches or pitches in an idea or two. Knowing him, he won’t always just sit and watch. He also doesn’t want you holding back on your artistic ability, so please, go all out and experiment if you have to. Not giving it your all, especially in front of him, is almost insulting to him.
Do you guys get caught? Maybe sometimes. The chase is always fun though. Well, maybe not all the time, but you can still look back at the memory and laugh a bit.
Kayn has one or two of your songs in his little private playlist. Will he ever tell you? Nope.
Sometimes the media goes overboard with your relationship with him. It’d be nice to debunk all of their theories and speculations, but Kayn insisted you let them go at it cause it’s funny. Admittedly, it was. Every small thing was “a hint.” There are some that take some “signs” differently and start wars between both of your fans. Still rather entertaining, but it did feel more concerning. Some fans can be pretty crazy. Usually, those little wars fix themselves within a few weeks if you’re lucky. Maybe months.
If it does come to it, Kayn won’t stop you from posting something in response to hopefully calm things down. Hell, he might even make a post himself. His wording might be a bit aggressive though.

Only Friends: Episode 6 Preview (Mew VS Ray)
Jesus Christ, the pain train will keep on chugging full steam ahead next week when it comes to Ray/Sand. Ray gets in an altercation with Mew (over Top), who proceeds to punch Ray in the face out of frustration. My jaw dropped to the floor.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There's an earlier clip where Ray is speaking to Boston and it sounds like Ray either finds out about the affair, or that Boston/Top have history. I have a feeling it's likely the latter, because Ray would be far angrier at Boston if he found about the affair. (As well as the fact we get another blow-up later between Boston and the entire group when this is revealed). Besides, knowing they had history is enough ammunition for Ray to believe that Top is untrustworthy and not deserving of Mew.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So Ray decides to approach Mew about it, probably in an attempt to warn him to distance himself from Top. However at this point, Mew's pretty loved up. Considering Ray's recent indiscretion and the fact he causes a scene (making this seem like drunken, rowdy behaviour), Mew ultimately defends and sides with Top, and sends Ray flying in the process. Ray hits the stage hard. Mew was not going easy in the slightest which left me speechless.
(*Has Mew become evil!Mew now that he doesn't wear glasses??)
Sand is also at the scene during this confrontation, and helps Ray up when he gets hit. Immediately after this is where Ray and Sand then also have their argument. This string of events makes a LOT more sense now, considering Ray's reaction.
Tumblr media
Ray must be incredibly heartbroken and utterly devastated. He probably never thought that Mew - the person who saved his life - would one day be capable of hurting him instead (and all in a bid to defend another man - a giant, red flag of a man).
Then Sand decides to top that off with "Can you stop thinking about something else for a second? Focus on me for once, will you?" perhaps not fully realising that this is THE ABSOLUTE WORST time to ask that question. I love you Sand, but this is really not the time to make this about you. I know you're still upset from this week's episode, but please give your boyfriend a moment's respite.
This results in Ray exploding in his face, shoving Sand to the ground and storming off.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ray's in an exceptionally heightened and raw state of mind in this scene. What he says to Sand is going to come out incredibly harshly, and he's not going to be thinking straight to consider Sand's feelings.
However, once he cools down, he's going to seriously regret it. Especially in immediate succession to hurting Sand just recently.
The aftermath is what I'm really concerned about. From Sand's perspective, everything that transpires 100% confirms Boston's bombshell, without a question of a doubt, that Ray does love Mew.
Both Ray and Sand will be in a very poor mental state after next week's episode, and I hope to god they're going to be okay.
Also - Ray should NOT be driving himself home when he's like this.

Now that I have everyone's responses to the "Durge was an Absolutist leader" reveal, I have thoughts. I think the whole thing works best if you tell the party about you being Bhaalspawn before going to the inauguration, because if you do that they're all like "It's okay, you don't have to be evil, you can fight your father, you have to fight your father" and while some Durges would probably be upset about the repeated insistence that they Mustn't Be Evil it's definitely well-intentioned and they want to support you. And then you get to the inauguration and they're furious about the Absolutist reveal. Which is mostly fair (Shadowheart getting mad at you specifically for not telling anyone when she knows you have amnesia is just a little unreasonable), but it's also like. all that support goes away the second they learn you weren't a good little non-murdery heroic Bhaalspawn like Gorion's Ward. To be fair, their anger and sense of betrayal are understandable, it's a hell of a thing to learn and I get the sense that the party really doesn't grasp just how strong Bhaal's hold on Durge is (I don't think it's a coincidence that Jaheira and Minsc are two of the calmest about the Bhaalspawn reveal or that Jaheira takes the Bhaal's Chosen reveal better than most of the party, they have more experience and so have a better understanding of what being Bhaalspawn actually means, but even they don't as far as I'm aware know about the "literally crafted from Bhaal's divine essence" situation)! I can definitely see why they for the most part react so overwhelmingly negatively, I would too in their position. But at the same time... poor Durge? I mean, they've just learned that they were a leader of the cult that stuck a tadpole in their and most of their friends' heads and is trying to take over the world. While the response to that would vary depending on the Durge, that's a heavy thing to suddenly have to deal with! And then the closest thing to support they get from the party is Minthara and Jaheira saying "Well, you fucked up big time but you can still sort of make up for it" and a couple party members not responding to it at all. The only person in this situation who seems pleased to have them around right now is Gortash.
...I wonder if that's part of the reason why Gortash chooses to reveal all of this here and now in front of the party rather than trying to find a moment to talk to Durge privately. It wouldn't have been hard for him to say "Well, I want to talk to the leader of your group privately and I won't give you any information until I get to do so," make it into some sort of power play or something and then explain the situation once they were alone. It might even have been smarter, since that way the party wouldn't be suspicious of Durge. But instead he spills the beans in front of everyone, driving a wedge between Durge and the rest of the group. The others love Durge enough to stick by them even after the reveal, but Gortash couldn't have known that would be the case when he told them! It doesn't make sense to deliberately cause problems among the party if he wants them working together as a team to deal with Orin for him, but it does make sense if his ultimate goal is to get rid of the rest of the party so he and Durge can rule together as was the original plan. After all, if the group decided they don't want a (former) Absolutist leader around and chase Durge away, where could Durge go other than straight to Gortash?

Legacy (Platonic)
Summary: Victory may be yours, but the Rangers see you fighting harder than ever. Now, seemingly at the end with a new family, you tell them why.
Requested by @wlwshiper
Tumblr media
Sometimes you were glad for the helmet and spandex. It could hide the rage in your eyes, the genuine anger and fury to once again have to have the world threatened by evil. You swung your sword, used your spin sword and everything you could. And, when it came to it, put it all into that final push of your blade to bring down the latest big bad of evil.
Everyone had survived. You'd done it. You'd won.
So why didn't it feel like it?
You knew why. You knew there would be another fight. Another evil.
Another Rita. Or someone just as bad as your mother.
You left her as soon as you could. The wave seemed to cleanse her but the damage was done. You aged slower than most, so you still looked like a teen. You had the attitude to match at least.
Your mentor seemed to know. It was looks he gave you. Understanding, for some reason.
You didn't realise why until Lauren came into the scene.
Secrets. Everyone had them.
Yours was more than just a sister of course. Yours was an entire legacy, and not a pretty one.
"Why aren't you joining them?" Lauren, the true red ranger, asked you. You were watching your friends, more so siblings, chattering and celebrating the win as you leaned up against a pillar.
"Just...trying to keep this picture in my mind forever."
She looked at them, then back to you, "are you ok?"
No one had ever really asked you that before. You were good at hiding your feelings. But here, it seemed that the walls had been let down.
So, you were honest before you could even stop yourself --
"My mother is the reason for all of this," you say, looking at her.
Lauren may of been sheltered, but she knew about the evil in the galaxy.
"...Rita..."
You nod.
At the silence from your friends you look back, only to see them now near you, concern on their faces.
"Is that why you never spoke about her?" Mia asks her big sister instinct seemingly on overdrive right now.
"Is that also why you trained so hard? To try and prove yourself?"
"Dude," Mike said, hitting Kevin on the shoulder, "but, Kev's right, is that why? I mean, if it helps, we don't think you do. It doesn't change anything."
"Yeah," Emily says with her bubbly smile, "you're still the same person who helped me out of my shell."
"And helped me catch some fish," Antonio says, joining in.
"Dayu was who I thought I could become at some point," Mia admitted, "but, thanks to you, I didn't. You kept me on the right path, Y/N. You're a good person."
Tears are in your eyes, "but...what if...?"
A hand goes on your shoulder. Jayden gives it a pat, "trust us, we know you. And, besides, without that, we wouldn't have met. We wouldn't have become a family. We wouldn't have helped each other how we have."
"We could've avoided the trauma. I could've had a mother."
There's a faint chuckle at your first sentence, then pity at the second.
"Maybe," Emily says, positivity shining through, "maybe there still can be. At some point. Maybe not right now. But, I mean my sister told me about that wave that saved the world from evil. I'm not saying that it will erase what she did, both to the world and to you. But, maybe if you wanted to, you could talk to her."
"But what if I don't..."
"Then that's ok, too," Kevin assures, "I dedicated my whole life to the Samurai and swimming, it's a new horizon for us all."
"Yeah, I mean, Mia is going to culinary school," you did snort. Mia rolled her eyes fondly.
"Yeah, yeah," she said, before looking back at you seriously, "but, Y/N, you aren't your mother. If you ever want to reach out to her, you let us know, ok? We'll be here. Always. What we have, that can never fully be broken."
You all move into a group hug. Maybe they're right, maybe your mother isn't the bad witch she once was. Maybe it was too late, though. Either way, you had them. And that was enough.
That was home.

sneak peek on the itachi and shisui one pls pls that sounds so intriguing 😩
k y'all i don't know how to do sneak peeks, so this is literally the start of the story, like our girl befriending itachi and meeting shisui. something's wrong w me, i'm too longwinded.
anyway, this is the original request - thank you so much to this person, whoever you are, you beautiful mind. death and angst to come, but for now, enjoy the fluff and smidge of tension, i suppose.
"Thinking about an Uchiha love triangle with Shisui and Itachi. Neither of them got to confess to the girl when they were still kids (also given how things played out for Shisui and Itachi….…) What if Shisui asked Itachi to keep her safe as one final wish? And that years after, she and Itachi ended up accidentally reconnecting. With him as an Akatsuki and her being assigned to investigate them and their whereabouts? What if after all these years, he’s always kept Shisui’s promise? That he’s always been her shadow??? That his feelings for her never faded????? HhhhhH Djdjdncn I’m definitely not a writer but I’m imagining angst. So much angst."
Masterlist💿
Loving From Afar
Pairing: Uchiha Itachi x f!Reader x Uchiha Shisui
Summary: A little brainwashed by public opinion, our reader is extremely stand-offish when faced with an Uchiha. Itachi changes that, and then had to deal with our reader being nicer to Shisui than she was to him in the beginning.
W/c: 5.3k (IM SO SORRY)
Warnings: Reader's a nervous puker, talk of throwing up but not particularly detailedly, kids flirting with kids (it's all rated G, dw), brief kids bullying kids, Itachi trying to overshadow his cousin
Ages: Itachi - 6 in the first n second bits, 7 in the third | Y/n - 7 in the first n second bits, 8 in the third | Shisui - 9 in the third
Notes: lmk if y'all fuck with this, if y'all hate this, what you would change, add, keep, throw away - just let me know!!!!
Tumblr media
You wished you hadn't been so quick to assume the opinion of your parents, in your younger years.
Your father, a Jonin, terribly wounded by the attack of the Nine Tails, cursed the Uchiha, whom he was certain were behind the carnage. Though a housewife, your mother steadfastly stood by his opinion, spitting on the once noble name with her husband. Like most of the village, you listened to those who seemed to know best.
They were evil, so evil that even the farmers on the countryside called the Uchiha a Family of Red Devils. Your thoughts were rightfully in accordance with the general public opinion - but it seemed you were one of the few sensible children at the Academy.
"Isn't he dreamy?" Yuna sighed, staring at Itachi over her sandwich.
"Totally," Mio agreed. She didn't even pretend to eat, like Yuna. Mio just stared at Itachi unabashedly, with her elbow propped on her knee and head in hand. "None of the boys in our year have muscles like his."
"Do you think he likes girls with-"
"Who cares what he likes?" You snapped, swallowing a mouthful of white rice. Mio and Yuna both turned their heads painfully slow, looking at you like you had just committed the highest treason. Indignant, you scoffed, quoting your parents, "He's an Uchiha - they're all reprobates, all rotten, vile people, and the more rotten and vile they are, the more powerful, and dangerous, they become. They come in two flavours only; weak or awful, and this one skipped a year, so he's not weak."
Neither Mio nor Yuna were able to come up with a quick enough reply. They just looked at you, and each other, opening and closing their mouths like stupid fish. Relishing the silence, you ate the last bite from your bento box, and threw it back into your bag.
When you looked back at your friends, their eyes were back on Itachi. You rolled your eyes, finally sparing Itachi a glance as you as you asked, "What can he be doing that is so... interesting."
Well, he was staring at you.
Your group, at least, you figured. Staring-staring, blatantly. His dinner-plate-sized, pitch black eyes stood so starkly against the pristine whites of his eyes and the pale glow of his face. You'd never seen such large eyes before in your life.
It scared the daylight out of you.
"What a creep!" You exclaimed, pulling at your bag over your shoulder and running back into the Academy building, right into Daikoku-Sensei's classroom to hide. He was your favourite instructor, and you were, by far, his favourite student.
Surely, Daikoku would protect your peace and let you spend a little while in his classroom before class.
He greeted you quite jovially, halfway through his own lunch and grading papers. Daikoku let you pull up a chair to his desk, just listening to you yammer about the most trivial things in the world as he marked the pages before him with a red pen.
However, your peace was disturbed again, too soon after it was restored. A knock came and Daikoku called them to enter.
"What a pleasant surprise! My two most gifted students, come to visit," your sensei said warmly once the door opened.
Intrigued, and a little jealous, you turned your head. Ugh.
"Come, pull up a chair, we weren't talking about anything important."
"I was just leaving actually," you interjected, collecting your bag from the floor beside you.
But, of course, Daikoku knew you were lying. He chuckled, "No, you were about to tell me about making a new dye for-"
"No, I wasn't," you snipped, standing up quickly. Despite him standing behind you, you could feel Itachi's eyes on you, trying to strip you down to your bare soul.
"Where can you possibly need to go, ten- nine minutes before my class starts?"
Itachi's eyes tickled your skin, searing through. But you kept your calm, trying still to not be rude. You just stammered, "Er... the- the library. I, er, have an over-due book, that I have to, y'know, give back."
Tucking your bag close to your body, you breezed past Itachi, who let you go without a word. You tried not to look at his eyes, having heard the horror stories, but they were just so big, and they were glued to you. Wide and unmoving, as if he were restraining himself greatly, and waging an internal battle.
He freaked you out.
To your core, Itachi unnerved you. Like all of the Uchiha.
It was bad enough that he had been moved up to your year because of his accomplishments, but you never had to interact with him before. You still hadn't, not properly, and, as you scurried away from Daikoku's classroom, you noticed that you were shaking like a leaf.
The unease travelled to your stomach, and made your mouth fill with saliva.
As quickly as your legs would carry you, you ran down the hall and out the back doors of the school.
You were just in time, kneeling into a bush and pulling your hair back, just as you began to throw up. Hot tears welled into your eyes, but you didn't make a sound as you gagged.
You could hear the doors swinging open again as you heaved into the bush, but you were far too occupied to care.
"Cor lummy - I didn't know you hated me this much."
Great. Yeah, perfect. Just what you wanted.
"Leave me al-"
Another wave took over your body, cutting off your command and taking every bit of authority out of it.
Much to your dismay, at the time, Itachi came behind you. With fingertips as gentle as feathers, he collected the loose strands of your hair, bringing it back properly and sliding your impromptu ponytail out of your hand.
You wanted to swear at him, yell at him to stop touching your hair, but you couldn't - you just kept throwing up.
After another wave, Itachi's hand came to the center of your back. You could feel a warm tingle were his hand was, and it almost seemed to tingle at the only frequency that could stop the vibrations in your stomach.
"Are... are you okay?" He asked in a unbefittingly soft voice as he stroked small circles into your back.
"No, go away," you snapped, head still in the bush.
Itachi just stated, his hand stilling, "I'm not going to leave you... not if you're not okay."
Coming out of the bush, you sat on the pavement and looked up at Itachi as he stood from his crouch. Your hair fluttered back to your shoulders, feeling strangely warmed, and almost dirty. Your mother and father would have been incensed if they had seen what just happened, so you knew you had to be as well.
"Why?"
"Because," Itachi hummed as he sat in front of you. "I want to show you that I'm not rotten, or vile, or weak, or awful, or that one strange word you used."
"I... I didn't..." He was making it so hard to stay true to your parents' word. You felt guilty to have repeated it. "I know you're not weak."
"And I'm trying to show you I'm none of the other things either."
They said there wasn't a good Uchiha to ever touch grass, but here the good one sat before you. He may have just been trying to prove his worth, but he did, somewhat, no matter how forced his action could have been.
"Thanks," you finally said, still so unsure.
"Do you want to be friends?"
You were wildly taken aback, and your parents late-night tirades flashed through your mind. Scampering to your feet at the speed of sound, you took up your bag, not caring about the pin that fell off in your hasty movement.
In response to Itachi's kindness, you ran.
Back into the Academy you went, finding the nearest girls' washroom to camp. You stayed for fifteen minutes, making yourself late for Daikoku's class intentionally.
When you arrived, you were woeful to find out that Itachi's wide-eyed stare had suddenly changed.
He glared at you now, and you wished for anything but.
Itachi's sharp eyes ripped your skin off, just to examine the many layers at their own leisure. You felt as through he was piercing through your soul, cutting it like cloth, with his plain, black eyes alone. Quick as you came, you tried to leave.
"No, I have to-"
"Y/n, you just got here-"
As your sensei stood in front of the door, blocking your only exit, you dove for the trashcan beside him.
It was stupid to think that you had gotten whatever was bugging you out earlier, because it wasn't like you ate some bad clams. You had captured Uchiha Itachi's attention, and you were sick to your stomach.
Tumblr media
Tossed in the gutter, you and your reputation became worthless. People used to like you, but once you became the Nervous Puker, people started to steer clear.
Whatever. It gave you a certain freedom you had never had before, not restricted to plans or anyone else's schedule.
The moniker was nasty in the first week of your naming, but you slowly stopped hearing it as people stopped talking to you. You assumed they probably still called you that, but you weren't bothered by it, because it was never staring you in the face.
Meandering the edge of the recess-yard, you stared out at the adults, ninja and civilians alike. They milled around, going about their business in various directions and ways. Some held cases, where others had bags strapped to their backs - the ones with the briefcases styled their hair much more nicely than the others, and you admired one blond man's perfect quaff as he walked past the Academy.
You couldn't wait to get out of the prison that was the Academy, and you forced yourself to make all the progress you could, as quickly as you could. The instructors loved you and gave you top marks, the work was simple, but that only supported your theory that the Academy was only stagnating you. Though, what use was a seven year old on the battlefield?
"Hey! NP!" One of the boys from your year called behind you, making you turn your head in acknowledgement. He laughed, "It's good to see you're used to your new name."
"It's just as good to see you're not eating," his friend commented, barely containing his laughter. "Don't want to put any fuel in the tank!"
Pursing your lips, you just nodded as they cried out with laughter, and turned your head back toward the passing people. Their taunts did little to bother you, so you weren't going to pay them any mind.
That was apparently the wrong thing to do, as a hand gripped your shoulder, throwing you around before you were pushed, back against the chain-link fence. The two boys jeered at you, both pinning your shoulders to the fence as it rattled with your attempts to move.
"Where are you trying to go? Feeling a bit nervous?" The blond boy snickered.
To add, his brunet friend sneered, "We'd better clear the splash zone."
Like a flash, your saviour appeared. You never got the chance to ask him what it was that spurred him to act, but you were always thankful for that decision of Itachi's.
"You two have nothing better to do?"
Their holds instantly relaxed as Itachi's eyes darted between them. You stared at him, confused, but undoubtedly grateful for his intervention. Anxiously, the two boys turned to Itachi. They were both taller than him, but Itachi's mere presence dwarfed them.
"We were just-"
"I don't care, stop bothering my friend."
Hey, you weren't going to poke a hole in that now.
Itachi was saving you, scooping you up like the hand of a god, being the only person who could realistically stop the teasing, other than Father Time.
When the wave swelled, you knew you had to ride it as far as it could take you. No gift-horses' mouths were getting looked into by you.
"Dude, you can't be serious," the brunet almost chuckled. "You, friends with the Nervy Puker? Puh-lease."
In an instant, Itachi's eyes swirled, turning from the, regularly unnerving, inky black to a bloody, Ruby red. The sickness came to your stomach immediately, and you looked away from the scene as best you could, scared in every respect.
"Call her that again at your own personal risk."
Yeah, you were going to throw up again. His voice... good, gracious Creator. You'd never heard such a sternness. Such authority. Especially not out of some six year old.
Because he wasn't some six year old. He was an Uchiha.
Just like it had a little over two weeks ago, your mouth began to fill with saliva. You swallowed it furiously, but the more you swallowed, the more came up. Heat travelled through your body, carried by the deep vibrations that pained you dully. In your attempt to stop the feeling, you hadn't even noticed the two boys running off, nor Itachi's eyes returning to their normal hue.
"Look at me."
You swallowed again and looked up. Itachi looked at you like he had a few weeks before, wide-eyed, as something you couldn't name flickered behind his pupils.
"We should go around back again, if you're feeling... unwell," he offered, voice restrained but still kind. Swallowing and clearing your throat, you shook your head, finding it hard to speak. To your surprise, Itachi came forward, stuttering, "I- er, the other day, when you... ran, I-I picked this up, for you. Y'know, so I could, like, give it back."
"Where did all your confidence go?" You teased, feeling greatly eased by his sudden nerves. You sank to the ground while leaning against the fence, arms wrapped around your stomach.
After looking at you strangely for a second, rifling through his pockets, Itachi let a small, straight-faced chuckle pass through him as he replied, "It seems to leave me when I speak to you."
"That's a real troublesome problem between friends."
Itachi's eyes lit up. "You... friends?"
"Isn't that what you said to Jiyuna?"
"Yeah," Itachi grinned, sitting next to you on the fence as he pulled your pin out of his pocket finally. "But... I thought... why'd you run, then?"
Without any good answer yet, you just shrugged and admitted, "You scare me."
As Itachi extended the pin to you, you held out your hand, and he pressed it right into the center, letting his touch linger. His eyes twinkled in a way that somewhat invited you, and his smile wasn't obnoxious or arrogant. Your parents were wrong, you realized then. You also realized you had never seen Itachi smile before, not even a little.
"So, friend, comrade, associate," Itachi started happily, moving his hand to point at the pin in yours. "Tell me about The Ballads of the Green Cloth, and convince me to get a matching pin."
From that day, onward, you and Itachi were as thick as thieves. The people who stopped talking to you tried to start again, attempting to get into Itachi's Good Books through you. It didn't work. Itachi hated them to an extreme, and the people who had actively teased you, even more. He steered you away from all of them, offering you some of the best company in the world; himself, alone.
Tumblr media
After every school day, Itachi began to invite you places. He would take you to the library, to his favourite spot on the creek, to the confectionary just off the main road. With your parents under the impression that you were attending extracurricular classes, you had two or three hours every day to spend with Itachi, completely unadulterated.
Gradually, over a year of spending the afternoons together, you and Itachi had built a steady rotation of places to go. The cycle started at the confectionary, with another nine places on the roster regularly (ten in the Summer). It wasn't set in stone, but you quickly came to find out that Itachi only ran on schedules.
"It's pissing down rain right now, Itachi," you pointed out, motioning to the massive window beside you, that the two of you sat on the ledge of. "Let's just stay in the library today, the creek will be flooded."
"It's creek day, though," Itachi countered.
You groaned, pressing your forehead to the cold glass, "I know, but it's not the day to go to the creek."
"What are you talking about? Yes, it is, we went to the stationary store yesterday."
"I've been meaning to ask you about that; why do we keep going there if you never buy anything? My pen purchases can only support us for so long - they're going to stop being to happy to see us."
"Why would I need to buy something, if you buy a pen every time?"
"My man! I buy the pens because you don't buy anything!"
Laughing lowly, Itachi took the honeysuckle juice that you had made in your kunoichi class that day from your hand and sipped it greedily. You grumbled something about how absolutely gluttonous he was, which only made Itachi laugh louder. The sound of his laughter hit your ear very kindly, cracking your resolve, and making you smile almost instantly. You bit it back, snatching the half-full container from him.
"You are so rich, and yet, you never pay for your own stuff."
"Well, duh, how else do you think I stay rich?" Itachi joked, laughter calming, developing a blush. You giggled, but his face got a bit serious, and he captured your eyes. Gently, a tad regretfully, Itachi asked, "Should I... should I be... paying for you? Like, your stuff?"
For some reason, his tone spoke to your heart, setting it ablaze. Your breath caught in your throat, feeling a tight pinch in the center of your chest. Goosebumps rose on your skin, cascading down your spine, and back, up, all the way up to the top of your head. A chill settled just underneath your skin, destined to never be warmed, save by one thing.
Perhaps it was the cold glass beside you, withstanding a particularly strong sheet of rain.
"No," you whispered.
Blinking a few times, the tension was cut, and you repeated, shaking your head and looking out the window,
"No, no. You shouldn't." Swallowing thickly, you chuckled, "You're younger than me anyway, I have more birthday money saved."
"Pretty girls like you shouldn't ever pay for themselves - Itachi, you idiot."
If it weren't for the slight shred to the other's voice, you would have thought Itachi had spoken.
But the voice was inherently not Itachi's, the melody was missing; the colloquialism replaced by a certain type of suave charm.
Your suspicions were confirmed as you looked at the window's glass and saw the reflection of someone on the ground. He was looking up, between you and Itachi, as your friend motioned to him, trying to be discreet. Making you feel even more confident in your deduction, the standing boy looked extremely similar to Itachi. His nose, and general facial shape, seemed a bit rounder, more soft than Itachi, with much shorter hair. And he definitely looked older.
It dawned on you that you were in the presence of another Uchiha, and the fear bloomed within you - it was quickly squashed by a heavy-set guilt for feeling that fear at all.
The guilt just made your stomach feel even worse.
It was as if your mind was on open display to Itachi as he immediately uncrossed his legs, coming closer and putting a hand on your knee as he hissed at the other boy, "Shisui, go away, now. I'll see you later."
"Why? What's wrong?" He, Shisui, asked, sounding so genuinely concerned that it just made you feel guiltier.
"Nothing. Bye. Go away."
"No, not if she's not okay."
Through the window, you watched the reflection of Itachi carrying out a silent fight with Shisui.
You just closed your eyes.
You were mortified. Itachi was so kind, and, here you were, getting all frightened over one of his family members, and then being the cause of his rudeness. If it was his father, you might have been justified in your fear, but another kid? Get serious.
"Look at me."
You did, remarking Itachi's eyes gleaming in the honey-shaded light of the library. A warm comfort overpowered all of your other emotions, wrapping you up tightly. It brought air to your lungs, in a deeper breath that you maintain to have ever been your deepest.
Itachi smiled gently, taking your hand into his and finding the perfect middle of your wrist. He rubbed small firm circles onto the pressure point.
"Do you want to go get an ice-pop, or something?"
"Popsicle," you corrected with a breath.
Chuckling lowly, Itachi nodded, "Whatever. Let's get one."
"Sounds tasty, can I come?" Shisui interrupted.
You froze at the other boy's voice and took a deep breath as Itachi gauged your reaction briefly. Immediately, he geared up to send Shisui on a long walk of a short pier. But, when you looked at Shisui, the words seemed to die on Itachi's tongue.
Nodding slowly, you found you couldn't speak. Well, you probably could have, but it would have sounded like a croak, and you didn't want that.
To your surprise, Shisui smiled broadly. Extending his hand to you, like Itachi always did to help you off of the ledge, Shisui beamed, "Great. I know a lovely, little place to get some really good fruit ice-po-psicles."
"We have our own designated spot, thank you very much," Itachi replied for you, smacking away Shisui's hand just before you were ready to take it.
He jumped off the ledge and extended his hand to you, providing a much more usual sight. You smiled as you took Itachi's hand, jumping close to him as he put his hand around your back as a precaution. Leaning close to Itachi's ear, you brushed his long hair back with your index finger as you whispered, "Maybe we should go to his place, so we don't disrupt the sanctitude of ours."
Gritting his teeth, Itachi leaned into your ear and whispered back, "I don't want him to come at all."
"Why?" You asked in a hush, lips brushing Itachi's ear again.
Dramatically sighing, Itachi bent his knees back and looked at you with narrowed eyes before leaning back into your ear to whisper, "You're going to like him more than me."
"Not very likely, but let's see," you giggled, not bothering to lower your voice. You looked to Shisui behind Itachi's shoulder, and he grinned at you, obviously feeling left out. Gathering up your courage, on Itachi's good word, you finally said to Shisui, "Itachi never mentioned an older brother."
"Ugh, are you calling me ugly, Ms. Nervy?" Shisui joked.
The nickname made your eye twitch, but that was nothing compared to the force Itachi turned around with, turning you with him.
"Don't you dare-"
"Shhh," you hushed, hoping to put Itachi off being even ruder to his uninformed family member.
"We're in the back of the library, and it's a Tuesday," Itachi snapped at you, before setting his fiery gaze back on Shisui who you couldn't see. Resuming a threatening tone, though even lower, thus quieter, Itachi hissed, "If you call her anything like that again, you and I are going to have a bigger issue than you can even fathom."
Sounding taken aback, Shisui said to you, as sweetly as his raspy voice would allow, "My deepest apologies, I should have known your guard dog can't take a joke."
"You know what-"
"Hey," you said gently, letting go of Itachi's hand. His hand on your back lingered a moment longer, but dropped as you approached Shisui. You smiled up at the older boy, remarking how sweetly his eyes shone, giggling lightly as you said, "You're a lot taller than I thought you were, up on the ledge."
"I suppose it's all about perspective, darling," he hummed, that suave voice from before returning. Flickering his eyes to Itachi behind you, Shisui chortled, "Is that one okay, or are you going to threaten me?"
You thought it was more than okay. No one had ever called you darling, except for your mother. Especially not so... lovingly? Of course, Itachi felt a different way. Coming from behind, Itachi tugged at your waist to get to you move around Shisui. You did and Itachi followed you, Shisui folding in behind him.
Once your group made it outside, you were left to your own umbrella, while the boys shared Itachi's. Apparently, Shisui wasn't much for planning.
As the two debated between where to go to get a popsicle, you let yourself get used to Shisui's voice. You quickly discovered they were cousins, but were much closer than any set you had ever seen. Shisui was a year older than you, and two years older than Itachi, which made you wonder if Itachi's voice would soon turn to be like Shisui's on day. Truly, his cadence lacked all the melody that Itachi's had a surplus of. Shisui spoke more loosely, and never went very long without a joke or a little quip. Even their scents were markedly different, as Itachi smelled like herbs and spices, whereas Shisui smelled of harsh soap. You came to know Itachi to be a member of the main family, while Shisui was a part of the branch family.
"Together, or separate?" The shopkeeper of Shisui's spot asked as the three of you put your chosen popsicles on the counter.
"Together," Shisui said quickly, getting out his wallet.
Itachi noticed, and got out his wallet as well, readying himself to beat Shisui to the money dish. Within your pocket, you collected 70 yen from your own wallet.
"That'll come up to..." The shopkeeper started, typing on his dated machine as it clicked and zipped. "68 yen."
You were first.
Smiling, oh, so very smugly, you looked at the boys as the shopkeeper took your bills from the dish with a soft chuckle.
"You two," he said, pointing at Shisui and Itachi as he gave you your change. "Ought to be paying for this sweetheart."
"Yeah," Shisui said pointedly, capturing your eyes before his smile returned. "If this sweetheart would let us pay for her, that is."
"I hear you, brother," the shopkeeper grinned, pushing the popsicles at you. The three of you took them up as the shopkeeper continued, "I've got a feisty one, too, back at home. They make the most wonderful wives, if either of you ever prove so lucky."
"They won't!" You exclaimed with a bubbly laugh, feeling embarrassed.
Maybe the shopkeeper would cause Itachi to recognize the signs of infatuation you displayed, and then he wouldn't want to be your friend anymore, and nothing scared you more. Not even your previous conceptions about the Uchiha.
"Oh, yeah?" The shopkeeper challenged you.
"Mhm."
The boys were strangely quiet, just staring at you. Maybe that was them seeing through your lie, so you decided to add,
"Honest! I like blonds."
"Blonds, hm?" He asked. You nodded with a soft smile on your face, praying that Itachi couldn't see through it. As if a test, the shopkeeper told you, "My son's a blond. Golden blond."
"Get me in contact with him," you laughed.
Before you could continue to dig yourself into the hole of your creation, Itachi put his hand on your shoulder, squeezing, though not strongly enough to hurt. You looked to him, and were met with that god-forsaken, wide-eyed stare.
Itachi needed to only look at you for a second before he kissed his teeth and relaxed his eyes, throwing his arm over you as he guided you out of the shop. Shisui gave the shopkeeper his thanks for the sale, and darted in front of you and Itachi, holding the door open for the two of you to squeeze through.
"Thank you," you and Itachi chorused in mumbles at the same time, before looking at each other and dissolving into a short laugh.
As you undid your umbrella, Itachi gave his umbrella to Shisui, staying by your side. The three of you began to walk slowly, down one of the back roads, Shisui with his own umbrella, you and Itachi sharing. You held it steadily for the two of you, only flopping a bit with the bounce of footsteps.
"I would dye my hair, if you would like it more," he asserted once at a comfortable pace, holding his popsicle to his chest to pop it out of the wrapping. Itachi moved to hold the stick as you took the end of his wrapping, holding it as he pulled it out. He looked at the cherry popsicle and gestured, asking, "Does it need to be blond, or can I do something cool, like red?"
Blushing, and leaning into his arm, you ducked your head down and laughed, "Platinum blond."
"I would look terrible, but if it's what you like..." Itachi replied, helping you with the wrapping of your popsicle before opening his palm for his wrapper in your hand. You gave it to him, and he shoved the wrappers in his pocket, giving you a smile as they crinkled.
Sighing contently, you and Itachi began to eat the popsicles. Your steps synchronized, and soon the bounces of your shoulders did as well.
"You two are cute," Shisui murmured behind you.  Itachi's head swiveled sharply and the elder cousin snickered, "I rescind that; one of you."
"Oh, you're such a charmer, Shisui," Itachi derided. He was, you thought. But leave it to Itachi to know what you were thinking. Shaking your shoulder a bit, Itachi leaned into your ear and whispered, "Don't fall victim, I'm your friend."
"You're my best friend, Itachi," you said loudly, grinning ear to ear as you swapped your popsicle for his. You licked his and he licked yours, and you both hummed,
"I like yours better."
Laughing again, you both shrugged and continued eating the other's popsicle. Shisui, no doubt feeling a bit left out again, came up beside you on the street and you angled yourself toward him, though Itachi's arm remained on your shoulders. You looked at Shisui as he gave Itachi a very playfully taunting look.
"This is what you two do?" He asked, making Itachi quirk his brow. Shisui motioned at his own popsicle, then the rainy day. "Get treats, and flirt, while walking around?"
Caught, your face screwed up. You didn't know where the line of obvious flirting was, and Shisui could tell you were interested in Itachi... so why couldn't Itachi?
"We're not flirting!" Itachi exclaimed, defended himself, his honour, his family's honour- "Yuck, don't say stuff like that, Shisui, that's so gross."
Oh. Okay.
You distinctly remembered that pain for the rest of your life. It was like a knife, impossibly sharp, and quite unforgiving.
For a year and change, you'd been using your small crush on Itachi to help with that overwhelming fear - you convinced yourself that he could have a crush on you too, and if that were true, then he really wouldn't hurt you. You would be safe.
But he didn't. Obviously, he didn't. Why would he?
Cripes, you didn't even feel like throwing up. Just crying.
"Hey," you mumbled, drawing Itachi's attention like a magnet. You looked at him, biting your tongue, as he looked at you with a tentative smile, worry in his eyes. Worry about what? Shaking your head, you got a grip, and half-smiled as you said, "I have to go."
"What?" He asked, smile dropping.
"Mum's making a nice dinner, so I have to go help," you explained, not exactly lying. Itachi nodded, opening his mouth to say something, but closed it just as soon. He moved to join Shisui's umbrella, and you grinned to the older cousin, "It was lovely to meet you, Shisui."
"And you, as well," he hummed. Shisui's smile was broad as he winked, "I hope we meet again, maybe do some flirting of our own."
In response to Shisui's kindness, you nodded, and ran away.

Man the recent episodes of Horizons have been pretty interesting with the Explorers.
But I also kinda feel at this point that among the Explorers admins, it seems like Spinel and Chalce are the two who are going to be the real "villains" of the group and the true threats to be taken down? The two are very clearly in cahoots with each other, and they're working together and seem to be the "leaders" of every operation the Explorers take on and are the ones to devise the plans. Especially this current one that's been happening throughout the entire chapter, where it's clear that the two had been leading the scheme from the beginning.
Spinel seems to have open hostility towards Amethio and has been working with Chalce to sort of lock Amethio up with Liko in a cave (the latter separated from her friends and with him because of Chalce), while Chalce snuck Coral and Sidian into the academy as a mole and now the two are facing Roy and Dot in a battle that will happen next episode. I think Spinel and Chalce seem to have their own motives in the group and intend to throw out even their fellow admins for their goals. Considering we now know that Amethio is Gibeon's grandson, and Gibeon has chosen him as the heir, I feel like Spinel wants to overthrow Amethio specifically as the heir to the Explorers after Gibeon. Which also explains his total yes-man behavior in regards to Gibeon: he seems to want Gibeon's approval and win him over to become the new head of the Explorers himself, and wants to get rid of Amethio to eliminate the "threat" of him since Amethio has the favor due to his blood relation to Gibeon. Maybe Chalce is also in the same boat.
Because on the other hand, all three of Amethio, Sidian, and Coral seem fairly redeemable. Amethio's sole motivation is to win over his grandfather's approval to be accepted as head of the Explorers, while Coral and Sidian don't really seem to have any innately evil motives for anything and are little more than battle-thirsty blood knights who love battle and seem to actively enjoy getting in the kids' way and beating them up for the fun of it. Sidian is very nice and affable, while Coral isn't and is rather immature and hot-headed, but they don't really feel like they belong with the Explorers...they seem to be there because they want opportunities to battle people and show off how strong they are. The three have had very close interactions with the Explorers at a personal level even as civilians in Coral and Sidian's cases and don't really seem innately "evil". Coral and Sidian are still dragged around by Spinel and Chalce and obey orders when they feel like it but they also tend to act on their own and it's obvious almost every encounter they've had with Liko, Roy, and Dot is by their own will with them disobeying orders in just about every instance. Amethio meanwhile has gone practically completely rogue and is acting on his own.
But I think those three aren't really the villains. Amethio will probably end up siding with the RVT in some way, while Coral and Sidian are at best an annoying nuisance to the kids and will probably just have a weird frenemy relationship with them long term that's built around them battling each other because Coral and Sidian feel like it.
While I don't know what'll become of Gibeon it seems he may not be the sole "big bad", if that's even what he'll end up being at all. Hamber despite being the second-in-command seems like he could be redeemed in some way, and the way Diana talks about him suggests that's how she feels. Even if their current relationship is antagonistic, Diana still does consider Hamber to be her friend, and she feels that she can still do something about him and that he's a better man than he shows himself to be outwardly.
Meanwhile Spinel and Chalce are outwardly "villainous" in their actions and I feel if anyone is certain to be the "main villains" of the story in the end that the other characters have to take down, it'll be them. They're very clever and cunning, and they also clearly have their own plans that will likely involve undermining the Explorers and Gibeon himself. I feel like the others will likely have a better outcome and either will side with the RVT or end up in a place where they're still free and about, either on a new path in the case of Amethio and Hamber, or in the case of Coral and Sidian, vitriolic frenemies with the kids. But Spinel and Chalce will probably end up having to be defeated and ultimately punished in some way, they seem to be the true threats.
A lot of thoughts but yeah that seems to be something I'm inclined to believe. Spinel and Chalce being the real "big bads" at the end. Meanwhile Gibeon and Hamber almost scream "misunderstood good guy" and I feel at least Hamber and Amethio will end up on a better path and redeemed. Amethio is most certainly going to be an anti-hero in the end. And then the "troublemakers" Coral and Sidian are basically going to be the new Jessie and James, two misfits who have nowhere to go so they cling to Liko, Roy, and Dot.

yes THANK YOU for saying it i hate those specific fanon nicknames as well. my other pet peeve are the terms 'bakusquad' and 'dekusquad' used in fanfic because i feel like those are okay to use in fandom discussion but the actual characters would NOT come up with those names much less use them unironically c'monn
SAMEEE these terms used in fics make my eyes roll fr. and I think the longer I've enjoyed mha the less bakusquad and dekusquad make sense to me anymore, even in fandom discussion
in the early days of mha fandom it was pretty normal to split up deku and bakugou bc 1.) not a super cool awesome amazing relationship at the moment and 2.) both of them were becoming friends with other members of the class (thank you season 2!!!). so if they were befriending different ppl then making two fanon friend groups seemed like the right fandom thing to do.
but fandom has always flanderized relationships pretty badly and mha, imo, is one of the most egregious examples. the loud majority of early fandomgoers were too scared of bkdk being connected in any possible way. they were abusive, toxic, evil, etc.etc.etc. and if you liked them then you fetishized bully/victim relationships. hence, in order to be a Good Fan, you had to separate them.
I fell for this belief back in 2019-2020 so I get it but like. it's crazy now. thinking about it. because horikoshi has Never meaningfully separated bkdk. they have always been joined at the hip regardless of how bad their dynamic was at any point in the narrative. in fact, this has been a core reason why bkg hated dk at the start. it's bc they literally could not distance themselves from each other 😭 idk. do you ever just think about how dissonant the popular fandom bible was to the Legitimate Canon Word Of Mouth.
there is no "dekusquad". there is no "bakusquad". it was a fundamental misunderstanding of the story to assume there are. bakugou has always been a part of deku's "squad" he just refused to admit it until recently. (he is also conveniently drawn in a lot of group illustrations with characters that are stereotypically a part of the dekusquad.) likewise some characters in these groups straight up don't interact anymore. anyway as of late mha has been prioritizing the Entire Class Of 1A as a singular entity instead of splitting it up into distinct factions.
I don't think the dekusquad and the bakusquad should be abolished, after all they're just typical fandom creations that get widely adopted because they're digestible and charming. if you like them then you like them! I don't dictate how you digest mha. but if you think bakusquad and dekusquad are still established friend groups that mean anything to the narrative and you navigate fandom discourse with this particular mindset I WILL look at you funny
ANYWAY THANK U ANON U GET MEEE

I am fully on Israel and the Jews side during this war; but omg some of the hardcore Jewish leftists. I want to say I feel frustrated but I actually feel so bad for them. I saw a post where a christian girl was expression how stupid and evil she found Christians being antisemitic, and the post got full of people saying stuff like “but christianity is inherently antisemitic! It’s built into the very fabric ! It and you are always going to be antisemitic!” Like saying that on a post where someone is literally condemning hatred in their own community is ????? The whole “I have decided you are a bigot and can never stop being a bigot” talking point has always been one of my least favorites. And the posts I’ve seen where leftists Jews are expressing how terrible it is that Jews are now being seen as white, and they acknowledge that it’s being used to excuse any and all hatred towards them, and how they need to get people to realize they are a middle easter group. Which yes, you guys aren’t white, you are middle easterners; but shouldn’t this be making some of ya’ll question the whole notion on the left that white=bad and that’s it’s not okay to categorize different people in that way? It’s just sad to see so many of them going through the utter betrayal they have but are still clinging to the super left way of thinking and just seem totally lost. And I’m not even saying to go right; but to at least acknowledge that maybe the whole black and white “white straight Christian American=Bad Everyone Else=good” rhetoric was always going to go bad for anyone who peddled it? It happened to Asians too in recent years. And I’m absolutely not trying to say this is a Jewish thing, just a far leftist thing, because I can remember all the Jews (and Asians, and Latinos, etc,) who were really trying to sound the alarm that once they lost their place on the oppression hierarchy, a lot of these far leftists treat the minority groups they used to champion even worse than how they treat white people. I don’t know. I just feel sick to my stomach seeing all these people feel so heartbroken and betrayed by what they considered their close friends and community. I just wish this didn’t have to happen to them this way.
It really is sad watching it happen. It should be a lesson to them of the dangers of playing so hard into identity politics. It's an inherently bad way of approaching situations and they approach every situation that way. Wars are a little more complex than this skin color = good and that skin color = bad but they've let their brains get so damaged by that way of thinking over the years that they're really going to have to put in the work to change and I just don't see that happening.
It's such a shame.

Full Mingo
I cannot be stopped, I cannot be contained, I’m writing Rise of Red fic now. (canon divergence, but I’m still getting to that part)
+
Ella throws an arm out across Red's chest, preventing her from walking into the courtyard. "Hold on. Don't talk to those kids by the fountain. They're the worst."
This, of course, means that Red wants to talk to them immediately. She's the worst kid around when they're in the correct timeline, so naturally she needs to talk to the current, ancient worst kids. Even though they're probably going to grow up into people like her mom. Her current-future mom, not the bubbly girl they have right now, before everything went wrong.
"Who's the worst?" Chloe asks, leaning out into the courtyard around Ella's arm to gawk at the kids gathered around the little fountain and sitting under the trees sprinkled throughout the place.
Ella yanks her back in by the back of her shiny, empty sword belt. "Nobody. Don't look at them, don't make eye contact with them, and definitely don't talk to them. They'll eat you alive if you do the wrong thing, and uh, no offence or anything, but you two look a little...different than most princesses around here."
"Aw, Ella. You don't need to be so careful all the time!" Bridget chirps. She's still holding the tray of magic cupcakes, and even though she knows the magic is going to get weird if she eats more than one, Red's fingers itch to take another one. The sugar-sweet frosting flavor isn't lingering  anymore, but the memory of the taste is making her mouth water. Whatever her mom's faults are now, she sure was a hell of a baker back in high school. The cupcakes are so good that Red almost lets herself wish that her mother could be like this now. Sweet, brainless, and able to make cupcakes lighter than air, soft and light and sweet as sugar.
And magic.
Can't forget the magic.
"I have to be careful, because you keep talking to everyone and getting us both into trouble!" Ella is saying. "Don't talk to those kids, Bridget. You've gotta set an example for our new transfer students. If you show them how you talk to everyone they're gonna get the wrong idea about school and think that it's some kind of happy birthday party all the time."
"You worry too much," Bridget giggles. "It's my un-birthday today, so we should treat it like a party. Life's just sweeter when you're nice. I'll talk to them."
"Don't."
"Yeah," Chloe chimes in. "Um, maybe don't?"
Bridget beams at them all.
And then spins past Ella's outstretched arm, cupcake tray in hand.
"No, don't, stop." Red intones. Bridget's already halfway across the courtyard, but she lifts a hand anyway, like it'll do anything to stop her mother. Even without the whole evil thing, this girl is determined. "Noooo."
Chloe's already out of their corner, hot on her heels. "Come on you guys, we have to go with her!"
"We don't!" Ella calls. "We really, super don't!"
Well then.
Red leans back against the wall of their alcove. "We could just leave the goody-two-shoes to their own devices for a while. Let them get out of their own trouble for once."
Ella shoots her a bemused sort of smile. "You say 'for once' like you already know us."
"I feel like I do. You two are cool," Red lies. "I think we're gonna be good friends. Y'know. If those two survive."
"They'll survive, but they might wish they hadn't," Ella says darkly, "Ulyana and her VK cronies are the worst. They look down on anyone who isn't a part of their clique, and they're obsessed with using dark magic to seem cool and edgy. They already got a group detention for breeding snakes in Morgie's room, and they just switched to breeding them behind the greenhouse instead. They're not even using them for magic or anything, they just think it's funny to drop them in people's bags when they're not looking. The snakes don't even survive most of the time."
"Animal lover?" Red guesses. Sure, she's guilty of using the trained flamingos in her mother's game sheds to torment Isaac and the other guards, but she always keeps them alive during the pranks, and even gives them extra shrimp afterwards. Some of them look up from the krill pond when she comes in now. The flamingos aren't talking animals, so they can't berate her for whatever it is she's failed to do each day, and they can't spill her secrets to anyone. Not like Isaac and Maddox. (and oh, even thinking about them hurts, but they're in the future now, and Red can worry about fixing her friends after she's fixed her mom). "I feel like my mom's animals are my only friends sometimes."
Ella gives her a real smile this time. "Yeah. I have mice living in my room."
Red's nose scrunches up without her conscious control. The doormouse is fine, but regular mice? Regular mice eat the sugar from her tea and chew up her secret, favorite clothes when she leaves them hidden under the bed for too long. "Ew."
"They're trained. They bring me sewing pins and ribbons when I need them for my dresses. I know it sounds weird, but they're my best friends."  "Next to Bridget?"
"Um." Ella shoots a glance over to where Bridget and Chloe have been waylaid by a pair of tall, pretty teenagers with dark hair and purple clothes. "Sure. Let's go with that."

We sort of touched on it in a prior post, but you’ve gotten a fair few details on how Mark and Carol raised Victoria by this point.
From what details you recall, how does her handling/raising of Kenzie fall into compare and contrast with those details?
Wooh. Hm. Well, I think she has Kenzie's ultimate wellbeing in mind more than Carol probably did while raising her and Amy. At the same time, when Victoria's first reaction to Kenzie getting publicly pilloried was "lets get you in front of cameras to argue your case, and also while we're at it lets keep our cape-network plan from falling through by jumping on the public-Scion-reveal grenade" I thought well. Yeah that's something Carol's daughter would think to do huh.
Its a dangerous relationship they're in. Victoria legitimately wants to keep Kenzie safe and stop her from overworking herself. She also really wants this cape group thing to work. She'd probably not consciously let the latter get in the way of the former, but she will let Kenzie fight as a hero if it seems like that's what Kenzie wants. The problem, of course, is that Kenzie wants what Victoria wants. Kenzie will act in whatever way will make the people around her happy, and so if she thinks Victoria wants her to be a hero (which you don't exactly need to be an observation tinker to notice), she's gonna make being a hero her whole thing. Not to mention that Kenzie also knows Ashley wants her to be an active cape, Sveta enjoys being on a hero team, etc....
I'll also say that the way Victoria's treating Chris.... kind of reminds me of how Carol treated Amy growing up? Victoria sees him as her responsibility: he's a member of the group Dr. Yamada asked her to shepherd, and he's a kid, and now that Dr. Yamada's gone that responsibility is even greater. Victoria is burdened with Chris in the same way Marquis burdens Carol with Amy; sure, Victoria does it a lot more voluntarily.... but she's also doing it more because she agreed to care for "the group," not for Chris. Chris is a responsibility that came packaged with what she wanted to do. And while the care she has for Kenzie seems to come from a place of genuine concern and affection, her keeping tabs on Chris feels strictly procedural. She's responsible for him, she'll keep tabs on him, nothing more to it. There's a lot of resentment and some frustration that boils into how Victoria treats Chris as a result. Insert your arrested development "I don't care for Chris" image here.
Hell, despite otherwise having pretty wildly different viewpoints when interacting with people, Victoria ends up resembling Taylor a lot in how she thinks about Chris, because it matches up so well with how Taylor thought about Regent. Its another case of "That guy I'm not as close to as the others, the dangerous one, the one whose probably a sociopath waiting to be let loose." I remember thinking that Chris seemed like "the Regent of the group" in my early reading, but they're really not so alike personality-wise, or even in terms of their place in the team dynamic; they're just positioned the same way in the mind of each text's narrator.
I read Taylor's reaction to Alec as one part fear-response to people who seem to delight in other's pain for no obvious reason, and one part a reaction to all the stuff she doesn't like about herself projected onto some twink in leggings. Her fixation on the idea that Regent must just like hurting people, that its just the kind of person he is, comes from the same scared confusion about why her best friend and the whole of the school started torturing her for no apparent reason. Its a reaction from a person who still categorizes everyone as bullies or victims, and is distressed about whether there's more to that and where she is on the spectrum. In her mind, he's a kinda evil dude that likes to hurt people because hes a bully and that's what bullies are, but actually maybe he's fine to hang around with? Which is getting churned in her head alongside her pledging to protect people by becoming a horrifying warlord and making long arguments to Pariah and Flechette about how villains can be helpful and heroes can be bullies. Taylor's relationship to Alec and her distance from him is symptomatic of her evolving views about who people can be, what power can be used for, and why people act the way they do.
Of course, Taylor conversely forms one of her strongest emotional bonds with someone who reminds her of her bullies even more than Alec does. But I think this makes sense for the same reason Chris and Kenzie could both remind Victoria of Amy but inspire such differing treatment. Bitch's first encounter with Taylor was a seemingly random attack that Taylor directly compares to the trio's assaults: she instinctively looks for a reason to hold back like she did for them, and then finds freedom in not having one. But while Rachel at first seems to directly fit the "bullies because she's a bully" model, Taylor learns pretty early on that Rachel has perfectly understandable reasons for her behavior, and that she can be predicted and made into a close ally if she just pays attention and puts in the work. Taylor's relationship with Alec is her sticking to the idea that the world is bullies and victims, and you have to find your place in it without understanding it because there's nothing more to understand. Taylor's relationship with Rachel, meanwhile, is her finding out the world isn't just bullies doing bad things because they're bad people. Rachel is the possibility of understanding the world, bringing it to heel, learning to love it and make it love you.
Similarly, Victoria's relationship with Chris is a reflection of everything she internalized from the Wretchening, while her relationship with Kenzie is her reacting against those internalized lessons towards something more hopeful. Chris is a medical freak who becomes a horrible misshapen monster on a regular basis and who suffers horribly for it, yet keeps choosing to do so. He's wretchening himself at the slightest provocation—he's impatient to wretchen himself! Add to that how his emotions rule him to the degree that they physically transform him, and that he shows absolutely no desire to reign them in, and its pretty clear why Victoria is often so negative to him. He's a powderkeg waiting to go off in a horrible way like his sister was, filled with strange and offputting desires turned into strange and offputting flesh, and unlike Amy he doesn't even have the decency to shamefully repress it. Chris is Amy as the deviant who qua deviancy will inevitably be a danger to everyone around him. Kenzie, meanwhile, is Amy as the sister who gave too much of herself. Victoria's shown at times that she hasn't forgotten how she loved Amy as a sister, how she wasn't inherently evil. She spoke with regret about not listening to Amy when she begged Victoria not to hug her. And she's pretty much said in-text "I don't want Kenzie, who I love as I once loved my sister, to exhaust herself to the point that she becomes lost in the way my sister did." Victoria looks at Chris and is reminded of all her fears of what strange and dangerous people will do, of her belief that bad people do bad things because their bad people. Victoria looks at Kenzie and remembers that's not true, and that she can do something about it.

Hi my friend sent me your Lynn cub reader fanfic and it was Soo cute!🥰
And I wanted to request something different
But the same thing at the same time
Can I have a yandere link's playtonic x baby hatchling lizalfos female reader
The links found the egg it a weird one and it just hatch in front of them
Like who would be her father and mother figure
And we all know wind is the best big brother!
I just think it funny and think differently links would be good monster fathers and mothers lol
The egg twitched- then bounced. Moving across the ground while bouncing from side to side.
“Is that… I mean is it really?” Sky trailed off. He was asking the question on everyone's mind, Was there really a baby lizalfos in there? Was this where they came from? The group had seen groups of enemies spawn from dust or dark magic- but never considered how they might go about creating their own young once fully grown. It was an assumption they were all born through darkness.
It all felt so natural to just assume the creatures didn't have any young. He had never fought a baby lizalfos or ever heard of one. So why was this egg moving? There was no way this was some egg they carried in as food because if it was they'd have swallowed it by now. Sky looked to the spot where the two lizalfos guards had died. They refused to move even as the rest of their camp was slaughtered.
“Seems like it. I’ve never even seen this before but I've heard the story. Their babies hatch so quickly they're only in eggs for a day or two which makes them hard to spot in the wild.” Twilight tilted his head studying the egg as it twitched again before standing still. It almost knocked itself over. “I don't think it's going to stay in there for much longer.”
“Are you guys just going to talk around or do we plan on actually doing something?” Four was the first to make his way over after clearing out the rest of the camp.
“It's just a baby.” Twilight was quick to defend the egg. He could see the anger in Four, the man wouldn't do anything, but it was smart to remind him that you were no danger. When you hatched you would be too young to do anything and hardly the size of a cat. If you attacked they could manage getting away and leaving you alone. For the sake of a new life in the world he would choose peace.
“It's a monster!” Four couldn't understand why Twilight was acting so nonchalant. Did the rancher really have it in his mind that this thing was anything like his goats? That the moment you hatched you would come out and sniff his hand? Of course not. Ganon’s minions would never know rest. You would either grow up in the wilds and be a killer or by some miracle you would be raised in an environment that would encourage goodwill.
“I’m still unsure about this. Granted it's still a monster, but you guys were wrong about dragons." Both the rancher and smith turned to Sky. He was staring off into the distance. A tell tale sign that he was somewhere else right now. “I mean everyone here thinks they’re evil but I’ve met friendly faces of theirs.”
“If we keep them we’ll have to feed them and keep them out of trouble. It may hurt us or it may imprint and protect us. No way to tell.” Time made his way over with the rest of the group. This was Wild’s era. if anyone would have a good clue what was going on it would be him. Four broke away from the group to ask the champion some questions.
The egg hadn't moved again. Time knew the stomping of their boots and sound of combat couldn't have made you feel safe. It was possible you were too scared to come out. With time maybe you'd grow closer to the group, it was only a matter of time. Both parties were apprehensive of each other. Unsure if the other was friend or foe.
Time knew the men here well enough to know that no matter what happens they would be taking the egg. Everyone could argue about it but it was set in stone. Curiosity would get the better of them all. If they left the camp now- leaving you in it- someone would wrap back around to take the egg. It would cut down on time if they just took the egg and let the baby run off when they hatched.
“You found WHAT?” Wild had heard the news and was going to rush over at any moment. Time scooped the egg up with both hands. You could fit in one but he wanted to make sure he didn't drop you. The boys wouldn't let him live it down if he did. It felt a bit rude to be taking you from what was your home. He knew however that your family was dead. taking you with them to a palace more packed with food was your ebay chance at survival.
“Our leader has spoken.” Twilight studied the old man's face. There wasn't a sliver of doubt in his mind that they would be taking the child with them. The rancher knew where to look to see the curious child that was hidden in their commander. The other may only see the kind and tough leader but his elusive other self was right there underneath the surface. Time had let his curiosity and hope get the better of him- or maybe make him better than the rest.
Wild was the first to run over. Hyrule was rushing over as he heard the news. The rest of the group was left to search for loot and make sure no stragglers snuck up on them. Wild was enamoured by the egg. In all his time in the wilds he had never come across one. He assumed they must be rare or well hidden but Hyrule disagreed. He had seen a baby lizalfos along with a few eggs in his home era.
Hyrule was insisting that it wasn't terribly difficult to find an egg or baby even. It was the danger of them that made you lucky if you never found one. The hatchlings were vicious. Born with a ferocious appetite they would eat anything they could get their hands on. They needed a large amount of food to grow up as fast as they could.
They spent very little time in adolescence and grew full size in the matter of weeks or months. Hyrule had never come across an adolescent lizalfos- which only made him think they could grow within a few days if supplied enough food. Why else were there so few accounts? Wild had no need for these accounts. He had heard rumours from stable hands and was sure he knew everything he needed to.
“How cool is all of that?!” Wild was ecstatic. Eyes wide he stared at the egg in Time’s hands. The old man kept trying to walk but was stop by the constant barrage of questions and hands trying to touch the egg.
“No! Not cool at all.” Hyrule turned to Time. “We can't bring this thing into our camp. We don't know-”
“I've made up my mind.” Time was calm as he interrupted Hyule. “We know what we're doing and if the worst happens we'll just leave them and let nature take care of the rest.”
“You don't know how much they eat!” Hyrule said.
“Two WHOLE raw cucos.” Wild stared at Time. “Hyrule said he saw one- a baby- eat two whole raw cucos. Twice the child's size.”
“I'm sure he's exaggerating.” Time was not sure any child could eat that much.
“When I was travelling I came across a baby lizalfos and I saw it eat two whole raw cucos. Whole! I stayed hidden because I had never seen one before and couldn't recognize what it was until it was halfway through the first. If we allow this to hatch in our camp it will eat everything it thinks is food.” Time could see what Hyrule was trying to stay. He was worried about those that had food that wasn't locked up in magical sheikah tech.
“I’m sure we can manage. It won't be able to swallow us whole and the champion can hold all food we don't want them getting their claws on. We won't allow them to just help themselves but there are ways to make sure they get fed.” Time pated the egg and felt it twitch as the child inside moved.
“How big?” Sky turned to Hyrule.
“What?” Hyrule looked past Time to the other man. Twilight was silent watching Wild prance around Time trying to get a better look at the egg now that it was moving again.
“How big was it? A cuco is pretty big, bigger than our egg here. If it ate a whole one it wouldn't be able to move from the weight of something its size stuck in its mouth.” Sky thought he had a good point. Hyrule held out his arms to represent the size of the one he saw. It was roughly the size of a gator. The egg was as big as one of their heads. The newborn hatchling would be too small to eat that much.
“I think we should be more worried about when this’ll hatch.” Twilight moved around Time and put a hand on Wild’s shoulder. He was not able to stand still at all and was bouncing around. You had been moving when they approached to take care of the monsters, and only stopped once the fighting was over. He figured since they were all new they were scarring you from coming out. You had to get used to them first.
“We need to keep moving. We simply don't have the time to wait there all day. We're taking them with us. If we can handle the adults in this camp we can handle whatever the kid throws at us. If they turn out to be hostile we will leave them or take them to a different monster camp.”  Time walked out of camp. Everyone followed behind him and made their way back to the road.
. . .
“You can't rush nature. They'll come out when they feel ready to.” Warrior was sick to his stomach watching the champion do something crazy. It was always the fear someone would get hurt while on his watch that got to him. Everyone else watched with their breaths drawn waiting for the champion to finish his task.
“They might be stuck!” Wild had heard stories of this happening. Sometimes baby birds would get stuck in their eggs and would need help coming out or else they wouldn't hatch. You had to intervene or let nature take its course- and take the life of the young in the egg.
“Do you know what you're doing?” Wind was sitting next to Wild helping him by keeping watch. He planned on cracking the egg himself. He was hesitating. The idea of hitting your head terrified him.
Everyone was unloading their packs in the clearing. It was midday and the weather in this region was far too humid to push any further. Faron was a jungle and the line of sight here was terrible. The moment anyone went off road they were out of view. Time was the only one to stay on the road the whole time. Electing not to take shortcuts or other paths so they wouldn't get lost.
He was the one that was holding you for the most part. He was worried you would hatch and scurry away into the underbrush and disappear. The others all got their chance but everyone passed it back once they had their fill. Warrior said the egg reminded him of a dragon which got Sky talking and by the time he was done it was time to call camp. Everyone was exhausted and sore from fighting and then walking for hours; but the most unbearable part was how the egg wouldn't hatch.
It had been hours and not one time did the baby break the shell. Four figured they had the hatch date wrong but Hyrule was sure that they only started moving when they were ready. What was the point of the rocking if it wasn't from you trying to get out. That meant something was wrong. It shouldn't take anymore than an hour or two and it had been double that since they took you along.
“Alright, here goes nothing.” Wild took his right hand and tapped the hilt of his dagger. Just hard enough to hammer the tip of the blade into the shell. He pulled the knife out. There wasn't any blood. He put the tip back in and tilted the knife wedging a sizable piece of shell off. Once it started to give way he removed the knife and pulled it away with his hands.
There was a flash of silver scales through the hole he made. You were in there and moving around. Squirming to try and break out. You had been stuck; not strong enough to break the shell on your own. Wild took another piece of the egg and broke it off. There was now a hole small enough for a hand to fit through.
“Hey Wind, think you can reach in there and pull them out?” Wild tilted the egg towards the kid. His hands were small enough that he would have no problem reaching in and grabbing you.
“Sure thing!” The sailor was all too happy to help out. He reached in and pulled. He had his hand around a leg of yours and was gently tugging you out of your shell. Wild helped out by breaking more of the shell off. In a matter of moments they had managed to free you. The inside of the egg was dry. A testament to however long you had been stuck in it. Everyone watched as a singular silver lizalfos opened its eyes and looked around.
“Well I’ll be.” The rancher was off to the far side of the camp watching. For something so strong you sure weren’t a fighter. They wouldn't have any issue caring for you that was sure.
“Hey everyone! Look!” Wind stood up and held you by one leg; holding you like a prize fish he just caught. The smile on his face was wide and you looked from him to everyone else in the camp out of surprise.
