Another fun thing about arc 20: it was happening in Arcadia. The school that everyone knows all the Wards go to. So when Taylor was calling on the student body to form around her, a bunch of people who know they're classmates with some of the heroes in the room went up and helped Skitter anyway. They're looking at Clockblocker and Kid Win, and knowing that they're also students here (maybe someone they interact with often, underneath the mask), and getting in their way anyways.
Clockblocker is watching Kim from History class and Patricia who sits next to him in Social Studies aid and abet a criminal—what is it like going to school again the next day as Dennis? Running yourself ragged trying to keep things in the city from falling apart, then seeing a sizable portion of your fellow students—the people you're trying to protect—choose to help this villain over you? It shocked Taylor to hear them talk about how Skitter had helped them. After hearing her justify herself before the echidna fight, what's it like for Dennis to realize so many of his classmates feel like she helped them more than he did?

Sanderson choosing violence against his fans today.
[Image description: A passage from Tress of the Emerald Sea. It reads “She took the took that resembled a shield and pressed it onto the roseite. The crystals responded immediately, pulling toward the metal, which (from the slate grey color) seemed to be simple iron. The other tool, the trowel, made the crystals grow away from it. It was of polished silvery metal. (Steel, for those who compulsively track these things.)” End ID.]

Howdy, it’s star system here.
Here are some things about ROTTMNT that our Leo fictive said were true
-Mikey loves sea shanties
-it’s actually Don who gives the best hugs
-Leo’s favorite artificial flavor is any red flavor
-Raph snores like nobody’s business
-Leo has intense trauma induced psychosis from the kraang invasion
-Leo and Don love rain and thunderstorms, while they make Raph and Mikey really anxious
-Leo actually can cook, but tried to do an advanced recipe right out the gate and failed and that’s why he’s banned from the kitchen
-Turtle pile is the best way of sleeping, hands down
-Don’s ‘flavorless juice’ is really just a drab looking protein shake. We call it flavorless because it’s grey and tastes boring.
-Shelldon never actually time traveled to get dad those eggs, he bioengineered them Jurassic park style and then painted them. He was counting on the microwave getting destroyed so he wouldn’t have to keep up the charade. Because- think about it, if Shelldon could time travel so easy, the kraang or shredder would never have been an issue, like at all.
-Leo and Don are closest to each other. Not that they aren’t close with Raph and Mikey, but Leo and Don are twins. There’s like, an extra level there.

To the people saying "Jason wouldn't have jumped into tartarus for Piper, like Percy did for Annabeth" as a way to demean him. Jason, plunged into the sky from the grand canyon to catch Piper in the first few pages of the lost hero without even knowing who she was, and without the knowledge that he could fly. so he basically jumped to his death attempting to catch her. In the first few pages of his journey, he didn't mind dying to save Piper, and ironically, that's also what he did in the last few pages of his journey. Y'all just be making the most out of pocket claims abt jason fr

the brothers ever :)
idk if this relatable to anyone else, but i don’t really talk about my special interests to anyone irl. like the thought of anyone finding out, especially close friends and family, that i like rise as much as i do makes me want to die a little bit on the inside. of course it wouldn’t be a big deal but still… does anyone know what i’m talking about or am i just being silly…?
i haven’t watched Bluey so idk much about it other than it has dogs so i just made leo like it for the same reasons i like rise (family shenanigans)
also messy comic ik but it is what it is

Leo's relationship with death
Leo really doesn't like to think about death.
I mean, we all saw how much impact Karai's death had on all of Mad Dogs but Leo was the only one that had to be dragged from her, yelling after her, he really, really didn't want to lose her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And I think when he lost her it left a deep scar.
I saw posts talking how Leo wants for things to get back to normal and pretend nothing happened, which I completely agree with. I think it's in big part because of his fear of repeating losing a close one.
He REALLY doesn't want to even acknowledge death.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here Raph seemed to be getting through to Leo-
Tumblr media
-but the moment he mentions possibility of his family dying?
Tumblr media
Nope, time to deflect, joke and feign ignorance.
Leo's aware that death is a big part of being a responsible hero and that's why he'd rather goof off with his brothers and not train.
Because obviously when you ignore something it just dissapears, right? So if they ignore severity of certain situations and possibility of dying it won't happen, right?
Tumblr media
If they don't treat it seriously they'll be fine! Totally!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then Raph shields Leo from the Krang and sends him away.
Tumblr media
And it's as if Karai's death stared right in his eyes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So Leo picks up the slack of leadership in order to save Raph. He behaves carelessly during this time but can you really blame him, he desperately wants to save his brother, to stop yet another family member from death that he is so scared of.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He still tries to be positive and nonchalant, that "pfff obvioulsy everything will turn out alright!" but at the end of the day, it's not that simple.
Tumblr media
Casey's speech had hard time to really hit Leo, he's still avoiding confronting resposibility, literally and metaphorically turning away from it. But the moment Casey says Leo's whole family died?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now that made an impact.
And every time his family is in terrible danger he looks absolutely terrified and basically every time Leo has to be dragged away to not just return and try to save them again.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And when there's nobody to drag him away?
Tumblr media
First thing he does is sacrifice himself. Because I don't think Leo is scared of his own death, or at least he is not as scared of him dying as his family. He'd rather give away his life than live through another grief.
Obviously I'm not sayin that the rest of the fam isn't terrified of close ones dying. But while they seem less aware (Mikey) and/or more ready for the possibility (Raph)...
Leo's wholly aware but he'd rather not be and ignore his fears until he can't anymore.

Take the following observations:
Taylor kissed Rachel to cure bonesaw's miasma (wildbow 2012, part 14.11)
Taylor could have spit on a bug and had it fly into Rachel's mouth to cure the miasma (@ty-bayonet-betteridge, 2023)
Wildbow has stated numerous times that neither of these characters are supposed to be taken as queer.
Taylor kissing a girl on the lips in a scenario when there were other options she likely would have thought of to cure her is Gay
These three observations all seem to contradict with each other, such that we cannot take them seriously without one of them giving. Most would place their doubt on 3, claiming that wildbow intentionally created a yuri moment for his readers and then backed away from the implications this would have on the larger story. However, careful reasoning reveals that there is no necessary contradiction:
A normally gay action isn't actually gay if all your alternatives in the situation would be more gay.
The most-often stated alternative for what Taylor could have done involved flying a bug down Rachel's throat.
Taylor's swarm is noted numerous times to be an extension of her body.
We can thus conclude there is no contradiction between are initial quartet of observations as long as we accept the following: Taylor having a bug fly down a girl's throat is more gay than simply kissing them.
With this out of the way, we can turn our attention to a section from 19.7:
Tumblr media
We have an instance of Taylor doing what she was fully capable of doing in the miasma incident, and sticking a bug down her teammate's throat—in this case in order to stop talking. Based on our above reasoning, we can conclude that Taylor did the equivalent of dipping Lisa into a surprise kiss sloppy style to shut her up. The fact that this strategy worked and Sundancer did in fact nuke those guys is an important piece of evidence for my ongoing theory that Worm acts on the logic of a romantic comedy—

The problem with modern philosophy is that we’ve come up with too many damn thought experiments. We need to streamline things a bit. That’s why I’ve constructed the following syllabus for any philosophy 101 professors:
The Trolley Room: every time the city trolley gets damaged running over one-to-several people tied to its tracks (which is often,) the city takes off and replaces the damaged part. Eventually, the city trolley is made up entirely of new parts. At the same time, a band of occultists have collected the discarded original parts to re-construct the trolley to harvest the energies of its countless slain. Which trolley would you rather your taxes go towards supporting?
Omelas’ Basilisk: If you fail to do everything in your power to help bring about the creation of a benevolent god-machine AI, then once inevitably created the AI will duplicate your brain patterns and put them into the mistreated child whose suffering allows the utopian lives of the many. Would that be fucked up or what?
The repugnant paradox: does the set of all societies whose populace have lives just barely worth living itself constitute a multiversally-constructed society? If so, does it contain itself? If not, why are you so lacking in whimsy?
The Gettier Room: Actually, do enough people on this site know about John Searle’s Chinese Room thought experiment for a joke to land? Honestly I hope not. Searle is a bastard and his argument is shit.

i like the vibes of the Tress posts but i don't know anything about the series, is it fine to start w tress of the emerald sea or would you need to read something else first
Tress is technically part of Sanderson's wider cosmere saga, and there's a lot of references to his other works in the story, but none of them are really necessary for understanding what's going on. The whole thing is meant to be in a fairy-tale register similar to The Princess Bride. There are characters who show up who readers of Sanderson's other work will see and think "oh, that's clearly an X from the planet Y," but a non-Sanderson reader will get to them and think "oh, that's a person with strange magical powers," which given the tone is a good reader reaction. Reading Sanderson's larger canon will tell you why this side character can't be killed, but its not a story where knowing why is something you need. Sometimes there's just a weird magic dude and you roll with it!
If you did read anything else in preparation, I believe the main intertexts are Elantris (his first book in the cosmere setting) and the originial Mistborn trilogy. But honestly you could just read it and have an enjoyable time and then ask around about anything that you want to read more about later.
