necro elysium (yuck!!) by @mercyisms
A confession: I LOVE fics that use the Disco Elysium format, and The Locked Tomb is just the perfect fit for this type of AUs (and going over the top with book design). And this one is so so so good!
🫀 I knew I wanted to mimic the layout of the text in DE basically as soon as I finished reading and saw the gorgeous illustration by @smapis.
🫀 The cover is inspired by the description of the card, but instead of trying to recreate it exactly (and messing with glitter) I went for the same theme and the kind of DIY arts and crafts style project vibe. Hence my first buttonhole stitch binding, with the heart painted with chromatographic ink (the color is called Unicorn’s Tears) and inked it over in hot pink with a glass dip pen. I also painted the folds of the pages and filled in some of the frames (where the narrator is YOU).
🫀 The rest of the portraits are cropped out of the aforementioned gorgeous illustration, except for Jod’s, which is a photo of a black hole (presented without comment).
🫀 I always want to play with textures for TLT fics, so this time the cover is black felt over a pink gift bag with nice leather-textured pink endpapers, and the textblock paper is a gorgeous 125gsm half-cotton that bravely took everything I threw at it.
I had so much fun working on this 🥰

It's Done!

Three months of work from start to finish! All so I could finally present to the world:
Pocket, Minecraft Edition:

Some standard rambles and fun progress images under the cut :)
So, I started this project in early August, mostly as something I could do during downtime of a then upcoming trip.
I had seen some absolutely amazing art pieces by @royalnaym which kinda gave me the idea that minecraft rendered in pixel art has a pretty interesting while still very recognizable look. At the same time I came across @groupcritpowerdynamics 's speedrun pastel pieces and those really inspired me to try depicting my favourite game in one of my favourite mediums!
In the middle of August 6th, while in the middle of packing for my trip to the UK, I decided I wanted to do this and I wanted to have it to work on during the trip, so I loaded up minecraft and went looking for a screenshot worthy of immortalization. Unfortunately I couldn't find exactly what I was looking for so I made a brand new world and started looking around for the right vibes.
I knew I wanted a lone tree, and that if I ended up including the hot bar I wanted some hearts and food missing, so after running around for a few minutes I decided I would just do it myself and planted a sapling to serve as my centrepiece.
I gotta say I think the resemblance is striking!
And now as promised, the progress gif: mind the slight flashing, I did take these in all manner of different places including but not limited to: a plane, a handful of buses, and a small inn on the shores of England (not in that order).
It's pretty neat to me that you can see how different tones of lighting affect the perceived colour of the thread, I definitely noticed it more on this piece verses other larger stitch projects.
#orange peels#I am so extremely happy with this patch#life has been hectic these past few weeks and getting to finish a project of this scale is so rewarding#minecraft#embroidery#I do wish I had more photos of the buttonhole stitching going on but I am the one true hater of the buttonhole stitch#so I was more just in a rush to get it over with#1k

Finished my buttonhole tutorial video! It's 22 minutes long. Here's a link to the blog post, with a written tutorial for the basic buttonhole (the video has a lot more than that) and source links for all the photos I used in the video, plus a few that I didn't.

giant bags of thread collected by old ladies over their lifetimes and never used, then donated to antique shops or sold on FB Marketplace, save me
protect and preserve me, immense ziplock bags full of 50 years' "oh but I have to have the EXACT SHADE of this fabric even though I'll never use 300 yards of thread!"
("Marzi why not buy new thread?" 99% of it is plastic and finding more than a handful of colors in cotton thread is incredibly rare in brick-and-mortar stores. let alone thread in fibers besides polyester and cotton, or buttonhole twist)
("come on, now, Marzi- THREAD can't possibly make you sweat more or catch fire and stick to your skin while burning, and isn't that your reasoning for using only natural-fiber fabrics?" listen. Irrational Brain Like When Zero Plastic. don't @ me)
#there's some law that every thread assortment must contain one (1) small spool of gold/cream/yellow silk thread#and one (1) spool of the gnarliest buttonhole-twist you'll ever see in your life#sewing#also tbh it is cheaper this way and you support a local business! the local fabric store gets plenty of money from me without chump change#that is buying thread

~ Book Notes periodical, 1913
I love this ad so much. I wish I could be friends with Annie E. Rider so we could drink wine and she could show me how to make shirts with a Durability Approaching Perpetuality. Also, I would place many Orders for Buttonholes.

POUCH!
@bigcats-birds-and-books asked for a pouch to keep masks and things safe in a bag :) years and years ago, someone made me something similar but smaller and I just sat and stared at that for a while before Doing This. Thinking back, I probably should've done a mock up in scrap fabric but nothing went horribly wrong so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
last photo it's stuffed with one of those grocery bags that fold up and fit in a pocket. This was fun and healing and a good brain scratcher thank you!!

@mxbuster replied to your post “Any tips on learning to make buttonholes? I've...”:
Wait, Vince, can you take a picture of how to use the scissors? What's the screw thing for? How do I cut the buttonhole with it?
Yes, sorry for the delay!

They work like this! The gap behind the blades leaves room for the edge of the garment, though it's still a bit small for some larger things like coats, and not really much help for vertical buttonholes.
The screw thing is so that you can adjust them so that they don't close all the way, which is useful if you have very short buttonholes. The one on mine is pretty worn and a little bent, but it's not completely stripped yet, so it still works.

These ones aren't as dull as they look, but I really ought to get them sharpened & cleaned up at some point. Mine came from my Grandma and I don't know exactly how old they are, but there are some very similar looking ones in the 1897 Sears catalogue.

I did some metallic buttonhole samples a few years ago and have wanted to put them on a garment ever since, and am finally getting around to it!
These ones are made of little strips of metallic leather stitched down with fairly widely spaced buttonhole stitches, using doubled metallic thread. I'm using one thread for each side of the buttonhole, so it doesn't get the chance to wear out where the needle eye rubs against it, and doing a bar tack at each end as usual. Under that there's a cut and overcast hole (just like I did in my buttonhole tutorial) and I'll piece the lining in around them.

Affirmations for sewing
I can deal with frustration
I am capable of trying things on scrap fabric and not caring when it looks bad
Things won't be perfect first time
I do not need to buy a thousand more things for projects
There's no time limit on these projects
The sewing machine is not my enemy
I will not go Office Space on my sewing machine
#narinatters#it's FINE that the fabric keeps getting caught when i try to do buttonholes it does not matter. i am zen.
