Messenger's Dove
Closed starter for @crew-from-capulet (Hermes)
It was a quiet Sunday morning when she woke up. Her eyes blinked at the sunny rays that fell through the windows of her bedroom before she stretched extensively.
Wanting to start the day relaxed, Aya decided to lie down for a while, watching the dancing shadows cast by the sun on the wall. When she noticed that something seemed to be shimmering in between, she turned her head to the side.
Surprised at what awaited her on her bedside table, she sat up, squeezing her eyes shut once more to make sure she wasn't still asleep and dreaming. Next to a magnificent bouquet of bright tulips, she found a pile of jewelry, gold and silver, almost glowing.
“What the--” Then it dawned on her. “Hermes...?”

Small notes about how Ancients view transformation, and how Emet personally sees it:
Emet describes transformation as being vainglorious to the point of being akin to running around robeless. Vainglorious is an important word here: transformation is, ultimately, a case of releasing sheer aetheric power. The ancients valued equality and assimilation, everyone equal and no one jealous, and that means no one greater than the rest, which means showing off your power is unacceptable. We also see ancients in recreation amaurot telling us to put on robes because our non robe clothing comes off as prideful.
Some go about this far in their analysis and decide that the metaphor of nakedness had more to do with pride rather than any kind of impropriety we would associate with nudity, and stop there, and that's fine. But I think it's also literal, at least for Emet. Emet who seemed uncomfortable with taking off his mask, who was uncomfortable at the idea of seeing another transform, who even after the sundering wore several layers.
Emet who was born with incredible power that he cannot hide. Who was always made to feel bare, who always covered his emotions in bristling and crossed arms. Who, by my headcanon, was criticized for pridefulness when all he ever did was exist. He began to fear the idea of being robeless. Of being seen. Transformation is a vulnerability to him like being naked is to us. Showing something he was taught by his society to hide. A part of him that's vital to his very being, woven through his body, something he would not be him without. If baring something like that isn't akin to nakedness, what is?
At the same time, I don't see Hermes's transformation as being akin to nakedness. If anything, I see it as drawing a protective barrier tight around him, putting up a metaphorical shield. He is not prideful, but he is autistic, and he does not understand why existing in a way he is strong could be so forbidden. I see it as a crutch or coping mechanism, vital to him, yet criticized by a world that doesn't understand.
For Elidibus, I see it as closest to what it was mechanically described to be, a hard shell of aether to fortify, built up around him and strengthening him, allowing better wielding. It is only a tool. A fact. There is no vulnerability or shame to it, only his existence, one that we accept. But I also don't think we ever truly saw what he was behind that shell. He never truly let his shield down. Perhaps what lies beneath would be the nakedness to him that transformation is to Emet. This is all much the same for Lahabrea.
All this to say, it's okay to have a flexible sense of what an ability means in world. The same things will always mean something different to different people. Transformation doesn't have to be nakedness, but it also can, in the same world at the same time, for different souls or different contexts. That's all.

unsure if this has been a talking point before but the whole thing with hermann canonically having a family offscreen is so gut wrenching to me because of the implication that he knew that his child would never grow up or likely even be born. vanessa was supposed to be due in april '25, around the same time he calculated the triple event would take place </3
#im just so emo about him lately#all the time even#i dont buy that he'd have a wife and kid like#look at him.#that is a lavender marriage at best#but still#i believe he'd have respected vanessa and he would have loved his child and fought for a chance#at them having a future even if he didn't have the time or brain space to devote to them#like personally i dont think he'd have ever wanted kids just bc his work is so. exacting and demanding and alive. what he does is his baby#but i think he does love children or at least the concept of them#like hes just this character with so much hope and faith in humanity how can he not have the utmost respect for the way that curiosity#and passion for life comes unfiltered through children#he would have been a good father#a patient one#he'd have been committed to not treating that child like lars treated him#and even though he probably didnt want kids that reality being within reach only#to be ripped from him (and vanessa) is so heartbreaking. and like. yk he never told her#or at least he couldn't bc he doesn't calculate there being the chance of a multi event til after there were already double events#and that might have been months after vanessa was already along her pregnancy#but also b/c he would not want to tell her that😭 in my heart he kept her blissfully unaware and was prepared to face the end of the world#knowing his child would never be born and that his wife was kept as safe as she could have been from that information the entire time#he's far from a family man but he definitely cared about the potential of that child & the comfort of its mother as well#sorry that was so long i just really love herm and what would have been his family#hermann gottlieb#pacific rim#pacrim#i wish pacrim had been given a chance longer than it lasted. i'd have loved to see hermann & newt's families
