In this golden age of Hollywood, two dashing actors have caught the public's eye with their incredible talent and undeniable charm: Jeffrey Hudson and Gregory Kant. These two heartthrobs, best known for their roles as Flash Gordon the space hero and Buck Howard, (sheriff of Dustbowl in the TV series “Hardwood”), are two of the most eligible bachelors on the planet! Nevertheless, these two bachelors seem to enjoy spending time with each other just as much as they enjoy attending glamorous star-studded  premiers with a beautiful starlet on their arm.

Their shared home, an elegant sanctuary hidden in the Hollywood Hills, is the epitome of style and sophistication. Decorated with tasteful, modern furnishings, the living room is a testament to their shared love for contemporary design. This warm, inviting space is where Jeffrey and Gregory spend countless hours discussing their craft, sharing stories, and enjoying each other's company and with close friends invited for a weekend getaway.

Williams controversially only spoke in Polari during the entire film leaving some audience members baffled and confused. Subtitles were suggested for some theatres, (especially those located outside of large metropolitan areas), but this proved difficult as Polari was fairly obscure even in the 1960s, (although it had come into more common consciousness through some radio broadcasts). Finally, a small company called “Bona Lingo” was hired from a little shop in Soho, London, which was able to provide the translations. The following is a sample of Williams announcing his plans for universal domination:

“As Emperor Omipalone, the villainous nanti-bona emperor of the cosmos, I've nattered to me palones and omies about me bijou plan to troll over the universe, naffing it up as I go. Vardering me lacoddy, all zhooshed up, and me basket well-crammed, I cackle to them, "Varder at me, omies and palones, we'll dish the dirt on all the other planets, scarpering their bijou dreams and turning them into a meshigener mess. We'll screech our Polari lingo from the zhooshy stars to the naffest corners, leaving chaos in our wake. Let's charper the universe together and make it bow before our wickedly fantabulosa reign!"”

On the King estate was a wild ravine where a stream known by the name “Awiehawken” dashed over a part of the famous duel ground, “which has been called the most interesting spot in the county of Hudson.” There handsome young Philip Hamilton in the dawn of his manhood fell by the hand of George Eacker three years before his father met a like fate from Aaron Burr. His second on that occasion was his cousin Philip Church, who had recently returned from England with his father, where he had been studying at Eton. These two grand-sons of General Philip Schuyler are said to have been strikingly alike in personal appearance, and their remarkable attachment, which led them to be seen constantly together, is one of the pleasantest memories in the annals of the society of the period.

I find this description interesting because it's one of the very few descriptions we get of Philip's appearance, aside the general elucidation of “handsome”, and Hamilton who once described him as having common, basic, infant attributes—Additionally, he was only eight months old, and any of these said features he very well could and likely did grow out of;

It is agreed on all hands, that he is handsome, his features are good, his eye is not only sprightly and expressive but it is full of benignity. His attitude in sitting is by connoisseurs esteemed graceful and he has a method of waving his hand that announces the future orator. He stands however rather awkwardly and his legs have not all the delicate slimness of his fathers.

Also particularly because this edition was published in 1902, before Allan McLane made the grave mistake of titling William's painting as Philip's in 1910. [x] Which would then spur others to make the same mistake like Ron Chernow, and even Phillip Thomas Tucker, who wrote; “A healthy and handsome dark-haired son Philip Hamilton was destined to be born on January 22, 1781.” [x] The presumption of dark hair likely originating due to William's shaded portrait.

But at the same time, Weymer Jay Mill was born in 1880 in Jersey City, and died in 1939. So, he was hardly talking from firsthand experience considering this would have been a whole 79 years after Philip's death, and P. Church who died in 1861. He also doesn't bring up any source material to this particular claim, so it can only be defined as hearsay. Although his claim isn't entirely far-fetched as a whole, P. Church visited his Hamilton relatives often and did seem to be close with his similar namesake cousin. He was definitely close to his Uncle Hamilton, He also served as an Aide-de-camp to for him between 1798-1800, while he was Major General and Inspector General of the Army during the Quasi-war. And both he and his cousin Philip were part of a literature society. It was a Literature Society composed mainly of boys in their early twenties. It looks as though the members belonged to the same generational group, and were all rather acquainted with each other. A reappearing pattern being that; most of them were from New York, studied law, and graduated from Columbia in the 1790s.

About this time, Mr. Jones was a member of a literary society, (of which the late Peter A. Jay was president,) composed, among others, of Nathan Sandford, Charles Baldwin, John Ferguson, Jas. Alexander, Rudolph Bunner, Goveurneur Ogden, the first Philip Hamilton, William Bard, Wm. A. Duer, Philip Church, John Duer, and Beverley Robinson; of whom the last five are the only survivors.

But I still have yet to see any claims that could be more solid about Philip looking similar to P. Church. Either way, it is interesting and could be plausible. Although judging by the common depictions of P. Church, I wouldn't consider that a compliment!

I am absolutely in love with the idea of Sherlock and William adopting a kid in America during their three years there. Here are some headcanons I have for another OC.

It was Moriarty who actually first found the child in between 1880 and 1881, bartering at an outside stall shop. It wasn’t really bartering, it was more of the child stealing & got caught. What caught his eye was that the child had an injured eye, not so unlike his, and the facts she was spitting out about the selling of spoiled fruit.

Somehow (i.e. not plotted out), Moriarty ended up bringing this child home after seeing the horrible conditions of how the child was living on the street & ended up parenting a seven-year-old child. 

It was really funny for Sherlock the first time he met her b/c it was one of those times when William was in his narcoleptic period & passed out, and he just sees another lump curled up next to him with a blanket covering the both of them. 

To this day, the child mainly only sleeps when William does much to their dismay (but that meant William had to have an acceptable sleeping cycle, so Sherlock considered that a win).

The child & Sherlock had one row before they became inseparable—the child had a keen interest in the self-defense that Sherlock had expertise in & Sherlock was interested in her designs that she sketched out from memory. 

The child’s name was Violet, and she had a penchant of revising already existing inventions and experiments. It was funny to William as to how she could point out every single flaw in Sherlock’s experiments, and then, not know how to read. 

Right before they moved back to London, she called William, “Papa,” and Sherlock, “Pop” & BAM—adoption papers signed at that point. Her name became Violet Holmes (b/c being associated with the Moriarty family was not doing any favors) & they took her to London to meet Uncle Louis & Albert. 

That was also the funniest experience when she met her parents’ friends b/c half of them absolutely loved her (Bond, Fred, and John) while the other half was wondering how Sherlock and William could raise a functional child (Lestrade, Louis, Moran, and Hudson).

Von Herder basically took her as a protege—MI6′s weapons were suddenly even more several generations ahead. 

Bonus: Billy was the bad influence of an older brother (who def taught her how to use a gun for self-protection—it’s America y’all) and def carried her on his shoulders.

Happy 100th Birthday Flying Scotsman

It might be a little late but I would be remiss if I didn’t put up a Happy Birthday post to the most well known locomotive in the entire world, the great Flying Scotsman.

I met him as a wee Gunzling at AusSteam ‘88, while he was being exhibited with NSWGR C-Class Pacific 3801, VR Hudsons R707 and R761 and others at Spencer Street Station. It was beyond imagining for a youngin’ to meet the great green Gresley himself.

This is something I will not forget.

Here’s to you, Scotty, and your friends Alan Pegler and William McAlpine; had they not saved you, we may not be celebrating this today, or have celebrated AusSteam ‘88 or anything.

To cap it off, enjoy once again the famous BBC documentary 4472 featuring the Rev. W. Awdry on the non stop Anniversary run from London to Edinburgh Waverley.

Rebel Without a Cause seems to me a better movie than either of the other two James Dean made: East of Eden (Elia Kazan, 1955) and Giant (George Stevens, 1956). It's less pretentious than the adaptation of John Steinbeck's attempt to retell the story of Cain and Abel in the Salinas Valley, and less bloated than the blockbuster version of Edna Ferber's novel about Texas. And Ray, a director with many personal hangups of his own, was far more in tune with Dean than either Kazan or Stevens, who were shocked by their star's eccentricities. Granted, Rebel is full of hack psychology and sociology, attributing the problems of Jim Stark (Dean), Judy (Natalie Wood), and John "Plato" Crawford (Sal Mineo) to parental inadequacy: Jim's weak father (Jim Backus) and domineering mother (Ann Doran) and paternal grandmother (Virginia Brissac), Judy's distant father (William Hopper) and mother (Rochelle Hudson), and Plato's absentee parents who have left him in care of the maid (Marietta Canty). In fact, Jim and his friends really are rebels without a cause, there being neither an efficient cause -- one that makes them do stupidly self-destructive things -- nor a final cause -- a clear purpose behind their madness. Fortunately, Ray is not as interested in explaining his characters as he is in bringing them to life. Unlike Kazan or Stevens, Ray gives his actors ample room to explore the parts they're playing. There's a loose, improvisatory quality to the scenes Dean, Wood, and Mineo play together, more suggestive of the French New Wave filmmakers than of Hollywood's tightly controlled directors. It's no surprise that both Jean-Luc Godard and François Truffaut were admirers of Ray's work. At the same time, though, Rebel is very much a Hollywood product, with vivid color cinematography by Ernest Haller, who had won an Oscar for his work on Gone With the Wind (Victor Fleming, 1939), and a fine score by Leonard Rosenman. Most of all, though, it has Dean, Wood, and Mineo, performers with an obvious rapport. At one point, for example, Dean puts a cigarette in his mouth backward -- filter on the outside -- and Wood reaches out and turns it around, a bit establishing their intimacy that feels so real that you wonder if it was improvised or developed in performance. (In fact, I noticed the gesture because I had just seen Billy Wilder's The Lost Weekend, made ten years earlier, in which Jane Wyman performs the same turning-the-cigarette-around action for Ray Milland several times. Cigarettes are nasty things but they make wonderful props.)
