it's funny because back in the day people used to say they couldn't/didn't ship characters of color because they were "boring" or "under developed" compared to gringitos but now that we have a slew of well developed, interesting, and prominent chars of color people just say you can't ship them because of [insert problematic bingo square] and idk man I find all that cardi b that's suspious dot gif

looking at that one new thunderbolts poster where the characters are overlayed with silhouettes of themselves, i would almost venture to say that the overlay versions are the versions of themselves that they are going to face in the void.
which, you know, would insinuate that yelena sees herself as an assassin/a black widow, walker as when he was captain america, red guardian in his prime… and bucky as the winter soldier

Ooohh! Late night (maybe secret) milk and cookies fresh from the oven! 🍪🥛🍼
ooooh i love the idea of this.... and not just because i made milk & cookies tonight!!
maybe its past your bedtime but daddy hasn't turned off the tv yet, he can sense that you're just not tired yet, and not in a good way either. most nights when you stay up late its because you're far too energized to sleep, running and skipping and dancing around the house insisting you don't need to rest, until next thing you know you're half asleep being carried into daddy's bed... but tonight you're just angsty. you already had your nighttime bottle, you've been cuddling with your stuffy while a calm cartoon plays, but your brain is elsewhere, half small and half spaced out.
then you hear the oven beep on.
"come here angel, i got a surprise"
daddy takes a packet of cookie dough from the back of the fridge, high up on the top shelf where you can't even reach. he puts two squares on a metal sheet, one for him and one for you.
"don't tell... but these are dada's magic cookies. sometimes when you're already asleep, daddy makes a special cookie before bed as a little treat... maybe they'll work for you too!"
cookies are one thing, but a magic cookie? and right before bed?? you couldn't believe how quickly your night was turning around. your sour mood dissipates as the kitchen fills with the smell of sugar. daddy pours another bottle for you to wash down your cookie, and your tummy feels just as warm as your heart as daddy rocks you to sleep.

Bridgerton (But Not Really)
Pairing: Bucky Barnes x Reader
Word count: 1.1k
Notes: I’m posting this in the parking lot of a Barnes and Noble
Tumblr media
Day 6: Face Fucking
Bucky tugs at the tie around his neck, loosening it and tossing it to the bed. His hands freeze for a second as he looks around the room. There are rose petals all over, several candles are lit, and he’s even sure he can smell something sweet.
You step out from around the corner, leaning against the wall and smirking
“Good evening Sergeant” You purr, and he looks you up and down, his eyes taking in the sheer pink robe, and little to nothing underneath it.
“Mrs. Barnes” He greets you, slowly unbuttoning his shirt, his eyes still on you. You approach him slowly, a seductive sway in your hips as you reach up and move his hands away to unbutton the shirt yourself.
“So when you said you couldn’t possibly make it tonight… and left me to go through a night of torture alone”
“Tony’s annual employee dedication ceremony” you correct him
“Torture. This? Is what you were doing?” He gestures to the room and you smile excitedly. All the sexy, seduction out the window for a second
“Happy birthday”
He squints, tilting his head back as he thinks for a moment, and goes back to undoing his shirt, pulling it from his pants. Your hands stall on his belt buckle as he looks back at you.
“Is it really the 10th?” He asks, placing his hands over yours and you nod
“Sure is… I’ve had this planned for weeks!”
“It took you weeks, to toss some rose petals down and light a candle?” He grabs your hips, his voice light and teasing and you smack his chest
“Okay, first of all, jerk. I’ve got way more planned… second of all. You’re having a party tomorrow”
“Are you shitting me?” He sighs into your shoulder and you giggle, putting your arms around his neck
“It’s just all of us… we wouldn’t let Tony throw a rager. Just so you know he’s doing that next weekend”
“Of course he is” he mutters and you stand on your toes, pecking his lips. He squeezes your hips in his hands, loving the soft, plush, curves.
“So what’s all this for hm? If I’m having two parties”
“I have to give you my present… in private”
That gets his attention, not that any of this wasn’t already. You finally unbuckle his pants, letting them fall around his ankles before getting on your knees. You kiss his boxers, leaving behind little lipstick marks and he groans quietly.
“Whatcha doin' baby girl?” He runs his hand over your hair, tilting your chin up to look at him and you bat your eyelashes
“Your favorite thing” You shrug like it’s nothing, like you both don’t know what he likes to do. Your fingers come up to toy with the waistband of his boxers and he chuckles, letting you pull them down. Even when he’s soft he’s impressive.
You spit into your palm, still staring up at him as you take his cock, stroking it slowly. He lets his head fall back, moaning softly as he thrusts into your hand.
“You sure you can handle it?” He mutters, his hand massaging your scalp
“I'm sure” You lick your lips, staring at his massive cock as it hardens for you, kissing the tip and giggling when his eyes roll back
“I don’t want you to be gentle,” You tell him, sucking the tip and swirling your tongue around it “I want you to use me, baby”
“Is that so?” He asks, pushing his cock past your lips and deeper down your throat. He gently moves your head, you can feel his cock twitch in your mouth and you moan
“That’s my good girl” He thrusts slowly, getting you used to his size and you gag slightly as he pushes it further down
“Better get used to that real quick” he warns you, letting go of your hair and holding you still for a moment while keeping it there.
“Oh this is gonna be good” He curses under his breath, feeling your throat clench around his length, so tight and warm for him.
He can’t help the way he gets when you do this, he reaches down, wiping a tear from your eye and grins wickedly and that’s when you know he’s done being nice, done letting you adjust.
He grabs your hair again, forcing you to take more of him, his cock hitting the back of your throat, making you gag even more.
"That's it, you're such a good little cocksucker. You were made for this, weren't you?"
He thrusts into your mouth, his hips moving in a steady rhythm, his dick filling your throat, his balls slapping against your chin.
You gag on his cock, your eyes rolling back as you drool, coating it with spit as he thrusts in and out of you. You can feel the absolute waterfall between your legs at the nasty things he says to you, he knows exactly what he’s doing to you.
He groans, his hand tightening in your hair, loving the sight of you choking on his cock, your eyes watering, face flushed. It drives him crazy seeing you like that, you can feel his cock twitch, his precum sliding down your throat.
He pulls out for a moment, letting you catch your breath. He grins, watching you cough and splutter before shoving it right back in, making you gag again.
His hands flow over your hair once more as he grabs fistfuls of it, tugging you on his cock as he builds that steady rhythm again.
“Fuck, you’re such a good girl for me, takin’ this cock so nicely. Bet you’ll swallow my load too huh? You better not miss a drop”
He thrusts deeper, his hips moving faster, he lets out a loud groan, filling your mouth with his hot cum, making you choke and gag as he fills you with his seed.
He falls over onto the bed, panting harshly. You collapse next to him, your cheeks are tear-stained, your lips are a deep red. He reaches his hand out, tucking a strand of your wild hair behind your ear.
“That was the hottest fucking thing we’ve ever done” He whispers, using the covers to wipe up your face. All you do is nod, your throat almost too thoroughly fucked to speak. He pulls you into his arms, his fingers trailing over your skin softly.
“Jarvis? Have some tea sent up for Mrs. Barnes” You blush deeply and he winks, putting your thigh over his leg, holding you as close to him as he can
“Right away Sir” the AI answers and you wave excitedly, signing something to him and he smiles.
“Jarvis? And some strawberry ice cream”
He tilts your chin up, running his finger over your lips before softly kissing them. You feel him reach down, teasingly rubbing his cock between your soaked folds before slipping it inside you.
“Best birthday ever”

Honesty pt. 3 | n romanoff
Tumblr media
hey brother, new beginnings
part 1 | part 2
summary: the chaos of moving brings a whole host of feelings, especially when family life takes a turn for the worst. but with her brother and best friend by her side, there isn’t anyone… or anything that Kaiiarina can’t face.
pairings: enemies to… (natasha romanoff x o!c)
wc: 6.2k
note: it’s starting to get going now :)) and yeah, Nat really is a bitch, isn’t she…
-⧗-
"Mama?" Kaia called out as she entered the house. It was eerily quiet and this made her uneasy. She placed her car keys in the bowl by the door and wandered into the front room. The door was closed and she wasn't expecting the scene she saw as she opened it.
Her parents were surrounded by suitcases and bags, clothes strewn everywhere as they tried to fit what looked like their life's worth of possessions into 4 cases.
"Um- what's going on?" She hesitantly asked, but of course she was ignored. Or they just didn't hear her. "Hello?"
"Oh! Kaiiarina! Finally. Took you long enough." Her mother was as cold as usual, which was oddly comforting in comparison to the chaos. "Can you grab that box from the shelf? The- no- not that one- yes that one." Kaia rolled her eyes internally as she handed her parents whatever they demanded.
"What is going on?" She tried to ask again, but no response came and that pissed her off. "Will someone just tell me!"
"Kaiiarina that is no way to talk to your father." Her mother scolded, but the teenager payed no attention.
"Will someone please just tell me what's going on!"
Her father was a large, stereotypical businessman, always in expensive suits. He towered over Kaia, but the girl wasn't scared of him. She knew how to handle him, thanks to her brother.
He placed his hands on his waist and straightened up, staring at his daughter who stood with her arms folded. "Your mother and I are leaving on a business trip in..." he glanced down at his expensive watch. "10 minutes."
His Russian accent was thick but it was something Kaia didn't even think about anymore. "You're leaving? And you didn't think to tell me? Great parenting guys."
"Kaiiarina you will watch your manners. This was a last minute trip. There was nothing we could do." Her mother never ever used her nickname, which Kaia hated. "Now, you're in the way. Go and see your brother." She ushered her out of the room, but Kaia stayed put.
"Wait... JB's home?" Her brother wasn't supposed to be back for another 3 months, way after she started at college.
"Yes. He's looking after you for-"
"I'm not 5! I don't need looking after!" Kaia groaned, once again annoyed at being treated like a child. Her parents didn't pay much attention to her, and she swore they'd forgotten she'd had birthdays since she was 5.
"Kaia, just go and see him." Her father handed her a matt black bank card and she stared at him blankly. "All the money you will need. Don't worry about running out. Your mother and I love you-"
"Bullshit." She muttered under her breath, to which her parents were oblivious.
"Ivan the taxi is here. We need to go." Her mother adjusted her hat and sunglasses in the mirror, looking elegant as ever. Her platinum blonde hair was pristine, as was her fur coat and heels. Nadiya was the only person Kaia knew who wore heels at the airport and didn't complain. "Kaiiarina, don't do anything stupid."
They dragged suitcases outside and Kaia followed them, watching as they stuffed the taxi full.
"When will you be back?" She called out. But the car doors just slammed shut and gravel scattered everywhere as the driver sped away, leaving Kaia stood on the doorstep all alone. She didn't care about being alone, but sometimes she just wanted to punch her parents.
"Okay... well... i guess this is no different to normal." She looked at the black card in her hand. "Just with even more money, I guess."
Slotting it into her phone case, the girl went on a hunt around the house for her brother. She wouldn't admit it to his face, but she'd missed him. They grew up close, finding the comfort in each other that they didn't get from their parents. But when he left to join the army when Kaia was 13, she was crushed. Every time he came home she made sure to make the most of her time with him before he left again.
"Bucky?" She called out as she knocked on his bedroom door. She was the only one allowed to call him Buck at home, except from his best friend Steve, who also joined the army with him. They were as inseparable as Kaia was with Yelena.
"Kai?" Shuffling could be heard before he clicked the lock and opened the door, a beaming smile on his face. "There's my favourite sister."
"I'm your only sister, dipshit."
Bucky chuckled and rolled his eyes. "Shut up and come here." He pulled her into a hug and she happily complied. He was much taller than her, standing at 6"0, and so his chin rested nicely on her head. "I've missed you."
"Damn, travelling really made you soft didn't it." He had taken a break from the army for 2 months to travel, his most recent stop being the glorious coasts of Italy.
"I could still easily take you down, and you know it." They pulled away and Bucky flexed his biceps jokingly, making Kaia do the same. "Nice muscles Kai. Still have those noodle arms I see."
Kaia smirked and casually pulled her leg up to her head in a leg hold, knowing how much her flexibility freaked him out. "Still have those stiff joints I see, old man."
"That's still as creepy as the first time you did it. Stop." She laughed as she let go of her leg, wishing she'd stretched before attempting that. She was really going to feel that tomorrow.
"Did you bring me anything back from Italy?"
"You mean 'did I bring you a postcard to go on your wall with the others?'" Kaia knew she'd been caught out and she nodded sheepishly, to which Bucky opened his door more and invited her in. "Well what kind of brother would I be if I didn't?"
"Umm- one that was raised by mama and papa?" It was meant as a joke but there was an element of sadness in her voice and Bucky reached out and rubbed her shoulder.
"You'd rather be with me than them, wouldn't you?" Kaia nodded, pulling a smile back onto her face. She didn't need to be sad right now. "Okay here you are." He handed her a paper bag and she grinned harder, knowing exactly what was inside.
And the picture didn't disappoint. The stunning waters of the Italian coast were outlined by the branches of an orange tree, the vibrant blue contrasting to the dazzling orange of the fruit. It captured everything Kaia loved about the country; it was perfect.
"I love it." She breathed out, tracing her finger along the rocky shoreline. "You get it right every time."
"And that's why I win the Best Brother Award."
"Keep dreaming."
There was a steady silence before Kaia spoke up again.
"Oh um.. I'm going to the studio tomorrow so don't wait around for me. I've got a lot of issues to dance out."
Bucky looked at her with a quirked brow. "You- okay I'm not gonna question that. But thanks for telling me."
"You gotcha." Kaia cringed as she did finger guns at her brother. "Hey, you need to tell me all about Italy over dinner."
"Pizza?"
"Duh."
-⧗-
"I can't come today Ki. Coach wants me to come help the younger kids. You know this is gonna look good for me at college."
Kaia groaned down the phone. "I know. Ugh okay, I'll be round after, okay?"
"Yup! Okay I gotta go."
"Bye Yelly."
"DONT CALL ME THAT!"
Kaiiarina laughed to herself as she threw her phone into the passenger seat of her car. She kind of wanted Yelena at the studio today, just so she could rant about her parents. Yelena was a really good listener when she wanted to be and Kaia was grateful for that. She also returned the favour when it was needed.
The dance studio wasn't far from her house, so she drove slowly, jamming to whatever came up on spotify as she shuffled her playlist.
The familiar smell of hardwood floors and resin hit her nostrils as she walked into the building she'd basically grown up in and Kaia couldn't help but smile.
Signing herself into the register book, she chatted to the receptionist who had one of the older dance recital programmes out. Kaia couldn't have been older than 10 and she looked adorable with her pink tutu, arms raised above her head with a beaming smile. Front and centre, of course.
She had no plan of what she wanted to work on, so she took her time to stretch and warm up. She'd created a playlist dedicated to improv so she danced her heart out to these songs for 30 minutes until she heard the door swing open as she was in the middle of a turns section.
Coming out of them gracefully, she swivelled round to see the interrupter standing in the doorway. She wouldn't mind if it was anyone else, but her red headed enemy was the last person she wanted to see right now.
"Oh I'm sorry. I thought this room was free."
Kaia paused the music on her phone. "That's Bullshit Natasha. You can hear the music in the hallway."
Nat shrugged slyly, crossing her arms over her chest. "Guess I just wanted to check out the competition. Oh, and I never formally congratulated you for getting into Pale Oak. I'm surprised."
"The competition?" Kaia scoffed. "Natasha, you've seen me dance since I was 6. You know better than anyone how I dance."
Natasha simply shrugged again, allowing her back to slide down her arm and onto the floor. "Still. If we're gonna be on the same course, I need to know who I'm dealing with. You know, seeing as I'm dan-"
"-as you're dance captain." Kaia cut her off mid sentence with irritation. "Yes I know. So does the entire population of instagram. Now, can I get back to practicing?"
"Of course. Don't let me stop you. You look like you need it." She grabbed her back and whipped round and out of the door, leaving Kaia seething in the middle of the studio.
As the door swung shut, a waft of Natasha's perfume floated under Kaia's nose. It was exactly like Natasha. Fiery, spicy and intense. Kind of nic-
"Fuck!" She exclaimed, her forehead falling into her hands. Natasha knew exactly how to get under her skin. And it worked. Every. Single. Time. If she wasn't so popular, Kaia would have said something years ago. But everyone loved Nat. She was the queen bee. Worshipped by most, feared by all.
She turned her music back on but Nat's words were in her head and she felt stiff and awkward. Her movements didn't flow and her turns were wobbly.
"I fucking hate Natasha Romanoff." Was the mantra the young girl muttered to herself as she packed her stuff away and stormed to her car. A 45 minute session wasn't what she planned, but she needed therapy. Yelena therapy.
Luckily, there was no chance of Natasha being home seeing as she was at the studio. So Kaia texted Yelena and rushed to her house, smiling for the first time at her best friend waiting at the door.
"I don't know how I'm gonna do it." She complained all the way up to Yelena's room.
"Do what?"
"This course! University! With your absolute witch of a sister."
Yelena stood in the doorway and watched with surprise as Kaia flopped face first onto the bed. "What did she do? I thought you were at the studio?"
"I was! Until your sister showed up and walked into my rehearsal room!"
"Kai you know she only does that to get under your skin. Just ignore her."
Kaia sat up and looked at Yelena deadpan. "Ignore her? Really!" Yelena looked dejected. "She basically called me shit Lena. How the fuck are you guys so different."
"Beats me." Yelena mumbled as she put on some chill music. "Look, I know she's making your life miserable, but you're barely gonna see her. You'll see the better Romanoff- Belova instead." She grinned and struck a stupid pose, to which Kaia couldn't help but laugh at.
"She's dance captain Lena. My life is going to be a living hell."
Yelena gasped and ran over to her best friend, grabbing her hand. "You know what you should do?" Kaia looked at her to continue. "Challenge her."
"I'm sorry what?" Kaia had to hold back a laugh. "This isn't some weird tv show or book where they have a dance off and fall in love. I'm not challenging her to a dance Lena. And besides, she's 2 years older!"
Yelena rolled her eyes. "I don't mean a dance, dumbass. I mean as captain. Can freshmen be dance captain?"
Kaia's eyes went wide as she realised what Yelena was suggesting. "That is the worst idea you've ever had." If she ever so much as breathed on Natasha's title, her life as she knew it would be over. "Do you even know your own sister?"
"Hmmm nope. She's scary."
"I'm doomed."
Yelena grabbed the tv remote and flicked to Netflix. "You, my friend, need to stop thinking about her. Let's watch a movie. You need to chill."
Kaia ran her hands over her face. "How am I supposed to chill when she's all I think about! Dance is supposed to be my therapy but now she's always there I can't cope! It's like she's infected my brain like a virus!"
"And that right there... is your problem. Stop thinking about her. You're giving her the satisfaction of knowing she can get to you. I know you Kai. You're a badass. Show her that." Kaia smiled. "My sister is a bitch, but she's still my sister. She's not going anywhere anytime soon. So you have to learn to deal with her."
"You're annoyingly good at this."
Yelena tossed her braid over her shoulder. "Ha! I know."
-⧗-
"Right, you all packed?" Bucky asked as they shut the trunk of his truck. They'd been packing all morning and in the blazing august heat, it was hard work. Kaia had been strangely quiet as they worked, despite Bucky's attempts at conversation. She'd said a word here and there, but nothing like her usual self would reply.
Kaia stared at her reflection in the window, the tinted window disguising the boxes and suitcases that took up the entirety of the backseat. "Yeah." She sounded dejected and JB's big brother instincts kicked in quickly.
"How about we go get a drink? There's smoothies in the fridge?" Kaia was a sucker for a smoothie and she couldn't resist the offer, especially with Bucky's wide smile.
"Sure."
Their fancy air-conditioning system made sure the house stayed cool all throughout the summer, even when the outside temperature was excessively hot. Bucky poured the smoothies into 2 glasses and added a blue straw into Kaia's glass, just as she liked it.
"Okay Kai. Talk to me." He sat across the island from his sister, the bar stool swivelling slightly as he adjusted his weight. Kaia just stared into her drink and stirred the straw around, a million thoughts swirling through her mind. "Hey, what's going on? Is it because mom and dad are gone?"
Kaia scoffed and looked at her brother. "There's nothing new there. Except more money."
Bucky shrugged in agreement. "Okay, so what is it? College?"
"I just-" Kaia sighed and slumped back in her chair. She considered her words for a moment, pulling her knee up to her chest to rest on as she thought. "It's a lot. It's new, it's different and I just don't know what to do."
"You and Yelena are guaranteed roommates right?"
"Yeah we got it confirmed last Friday."
"So then it's just like you guys are having a giant, year-long sleepover!" He did small jazz hands to try and bring some life into his words, but it only brought a small smile to Kaia's face. Which was better than nothing.
"That's not the part I'm worried about. I'm just scared that I'm not gonna be good enough for this programme. I mean, Natasha's the captain for god's sake! And she's amazing! Which means everyone else is gonna be amazing too, and I'm gonna be the worst in the class and-"
"Okay woah hold up. Do you hear yourself?" Kaia just stared at him blankly, so he continued. "Kai, it feels like you've been dancing since before you could walk, so-"
"No, I-"
"Let me finish. You auditioned for this programme right?" She nodded. "And they accepted you based on your audition alone, yes?" Another nod. "So the professors think you're good enough. And that's really all you need. But there is one more person who needs to think you're good enough, or you're not gonna get the most out of your course."
"... and that is...?"
Bucky smiled softly. "It's you, Kai. If you don't believe in yourself you're just gonna hold yourself back."
His words hit a spot somewhere inside her and she had to swallow hard to keep the tears at bay. "When did you get so wise?"
"Since I spent every day with Sam. He's like Mr Motivational."
Kaia laughed and sipped her drink thoughtfully. He was right, annoyingly so. But it wasn't going to change her mind that quickly. She needed time, and she needed to leave. The build up was the worst part and it was only going to make her spiral more if they sat here doing nothing. "When can we leave?" She asked.
Bucky glanced at his watch. "Let's say... 20 minutes? Gives us enough time for one last house check, just to see if you've forgotten anything."
"Okay." Kaia slid off her chair and headed upstairs, leaving Bucky alone in the kitchen. He was worried about her, but there wasn't anyone he could contact to share his concerns. It's not like their parents were around enough to care. They'd just send more money their way and tell them to sort it out. He had to fill the shoes of a father as well as the duties of a big brother. Kaia was independent but she was only 18. Going off to college with no parents to help you move in was going to be tough.
Kaia had poked around her closet and dresser, pulling out a hoodie she wanted to take. But nothing else caught her eye so she sank onto her mattress, legs hanging off the edge of her bed. As she looked around her childhood bedroom, memories came flooding back.
Afternoons spent with Bucky playing dolls, much to his dismay but he suffered through it. Sleepovers with Yelena where they'd stay up until 3am whispering and giggling to each other. The night Yelena came over crying because she'd figured out she was asexual and didn't know what to do. Framed photos and dance trophies sat on shelves all around the room and it was going to be weird not having them around.
So much had happened in that room and it felt weird to leave behind. But she wasn't finishing her story. The page was just turning, another chapter beginning. The cover was not closed yet. She had so much more to see and experience at university, and with Yelena by her side, anything was possible.
She held the hoodie tightly in her lap, taking a final deep breath.
"You ready to go?" Bucky poked his head around the door with a bag of food in his hand. "I got snacks."
She shot her brother a soft smile and stood up, smoothing the covers of her bed down. "I think so." She paused for a moment. "Is it weird to say goodbye to a room? I mean, it's not like I'm leaving forever."
"I don't think so. I did."
"Well, goodbye room. See you at christmas." And with that, she shut her door behind her. "Did you get m&m's?" Bucky reached in the bag and shook the packet. "Ugh I love you."
"Good, because I wouldn't be doing this 5 hour drive if you didn't!" He wrapped his arm around her shoulder and they left to the car. As they pulled out of the driveway, Bucky drove slowly so Kaia could take one last look at her childhood home. This was the last time she could ever call it her home. But that didn't make her feel as sad as it maybe should have done.
"Can I be on music duty?" She asked, connecting her phone to the car's bluetooth.
"Be my guest!"
Their journey was then filled with songs of all different kinds: Fleetwood Mac, ABBA, Taylor Swift, Harry Styles, AC DC, as well as miscellaneous songs from Kaia's various playlists. She even added some old jazz, more for Bucky's enjoyment. Got to keep the driver happy.
She was texting Yelena the entire time, screaming back and forth about moving in together. Her wild hair blew around her head as they drove with the windows down, the contrast between the sun on her skin and the breeze cooling her off. The car stopped a few times for gas and so Bucky could stretch his legs, giving Kaia the perfect opportunity to grab snacks. Cheezits, fruit pots, iced tea and jelly snakes were her pick. Chocolate would have been ideal, but her box of milk duds had all melted and formed a gooey mess, so Bucky advised against more.
The road signs started showing directions to Pale Oak University and Kaia could see the top of the clock tower peeking through the trees in the distance. She pulled her journal from her bag by her feet and immediately started scribbling her excitement. It was like her second outlet, besides dance. She always vowed if she didn't make it far with dance that she'd become a writer. Creativity really was her strong suit.
She barely stopped writing to think, just getting every thought down on paper so she could remember forever. Bucky softly smiled to himself as he heard her pen scratching away, all too familiar with the sound. They turned off the highway and drove down roads lined with trees, canopies of green protecting from the powerful rays of the mid August sun.
"Hey Ki, you might want to see this." He nudged his sister who managed to tear her eyes away from the page for a second before they almost bulged out of her head at the view in front of her.
Huge white stone pillars marked the entrance to the next 4 years of her life, 'Pale Oak University' carved ornately into the large structures. Trees were dotted around the luscious lawns, twisting sandy paths disappearing around the corner. The car parks were filled, as well as staff golf buggies that were zipping around, transporting new students and parents to the dorms.
Several adults in dark blue polo shirts were helping direct the flow of traffic so they could clear the road as quickly as possible. Bucky rolled down his window to talk to a brown haired guy who looked to be about 30 with a super cheesy grin. As he nodded along to the directions given, Kaia shot a text to Yelena, who was still 20 minutes behind them. This was perfect. Meant Kaia got first dibs on beds.
Once Bucky had backed into his parking space, a golf cart was already waiting, a trailer on the back ready to be filled with Kaia's things. It was starting to feel very real.
"Hi! Welcome to Pale Oak University! We are so happy for you to be joining us!" A bouncy woman with blonde hair scraped back into a ponytail came running over as Kaia and Bucky climbed out of the car. The siblings shared a look, Kaia failing to disguise the smirk tugging at her lips. They just had to accept the cheesiness. It wasn't going to go away, no matter how hard she wished it.
Adjusting her bag on her shoulder and raking her hands through her hair, trying to tame the waves, Kaia smiled at the woman, who was excitedly flicking through the papers she had attached to her dark blue clipboard.
"You must be..."
"Kaia." When the woman's smile dropped in puzzlement, Kaia cursed herself internally. "I think I'm down as Kaiiarina. Kaiiarina Lenkova?"
"Ah, gotcha." She fished into the little pouch around her waist and pulled out a key and card, handing them over to Kaia along with a bunch of leaflets and papers. "Okay so we've got you room key and general entry card, which we can get set up when you go to collect your student ID card." Kaia nodded, feeling a weird feeling rush around her body as she held her key. Well, it was gonna be the same as Yelena's. Their key.
"And then this is your map of campus, dont worry, I still get lost." She winked at Kaia, who smiled politely. She hoped that she wouldn't get lost. Although her sense of direction wasn't the best, she just went where she felt. A free spirit. "And you've got all the contact numbers of different help services that we provide, as well as all of the activities that are happening during the next week at freshman orientation."
"Like the fair?"
"Exactly! You can find all of our societies at the fair on Tuesday. Sports, music, even Taylor Swift, we've got a society for everything. Do you have any ideas of what you want to join?"
Kaia looked at the glossy booklet in her hand. "I guess, but I just want to see everything first."
"That's a good idea Kai." Bucky had been leaning on the bonnet of his truck, not wanting to interrupt as Kaia got acquainted. But he came into view and the woman visibly gulped, adjusting her posture.
"I completely forgot to introduce myself. Im Madison!" She shook both of their hands, spending a little bit more time with Bucky. Kaia just rolled her eyes, knowing she should have expected this. Bucky seemed to have that affect on every girl he met, even when he was clearly not interested. Looks like this was gonna be his tour rather than hers.
"Bucky." He flashed her a smile which almost made the poor girl pass out.
"Hi."
There was a split second silence before Kaia couldn't take anymore. Every second they spent out here was time she was losing to pick the best bed. Couldn't have Yelena sleeping in luxury for the whole year.
"So, can I take my stuff to the dorm now? Or..." She trailed off, gesturing to the trailer.
Madison seemed to snap out of her Bucky trance and she bounced back, grabbing the walkie talkie hooked to her back pocket before it clattered to the ground. "Right! Yes. If we load up now then I can take you straight over. It's the most exciting part, isn't it?" She grinned wide at Kaia, who nodded.
"Oh yeah."
It took about 20 minutes to load all of the boxes and bags in the trailer, and Kaia still had to sit with her large stuffed bear on her lap as they rode the buggy round to the dorms. The campus was heaving with people, students lounging in groups on the grass, music blasting from speakers, and little food stalls set up across the courtyards, mostly to feed the hangry parents.
"You're in room 201B. And your roommate is Yelena Belova. Do you two know each other?"
"Not at all." Kaia said with a straight face, trying not to break character as she heard Bucky stifle a snort behind her.
"Well she should be here soon so you two can get to know each other."
"I can already tell we're gonna be best friends." Oh what an understatement.
Madison stopped outside a room, the brass plate reading '201', with both Yelena and Kaiiarina's names written on the door sign. "Here we are!" She gestured to the name cards. "I admire your positivity. Some people aren't too enthusiastic about sleeping in a room with a stranger."
Kaia smirked. "Oh I can imagine."
"Well, you've got your key and my contact number on your information card. Anything you need, just use that number. And I'll be back in an hour or 2 to check how you're doing." She gave Kaia a small smile and then widened it as she looked at Bucky, her arm intentionally brushing against his hand as she walked off.
"Okay well you can't visit me if you're gonna have that effect on every single girl here." Kaia huffed, fumbling the key in her fingers. She watched a flake of nail polish chip off as the side of the key caught it accidentally.
Bucky chuckled as he took the papers from his sister's hands so she could open the door properly. "Don't you worry. I'm here for you and you only."
"Still not on the dating game then?"
Bucky rolled his eyes. "Can we stop talking about my love life? I want to see your room."
Kaia puffed her cheeks out as she exhaled, clutching the key. It felt weird knowing this room she was going to walk in on would be her home for the next year at least. "Fuck it, let's go."
It wasn't anything special, but Kaia's creativity was spiralling through her mind as her eyes darted across the plain wooden furniture. Like a new song, the foundations of a beautiful dance just waiting to be uncovered.
There was a lot of floor space, partly because the furniture was pressed against the walls. Each girl had a bunk bed with storage space underneath, a desk, another set of drawers and a wardrobe each. They were set up parallel, with one large window spanning the back of the room. The bathroom door was on the left and Kaia counted herself lucky that they didn't have to use the communal washroom.
"Oh fuck Kai- have you seen out the window?" Bucky was leaning on the ledge looking out across the view with his jaw slack, eyes wide. They were on the 5th floor so the window panned out onto the main lawn area and the woodlands beyond, just a sea of greenery. The sun sparkled through the branches, casting shadows and making shapes that you could only appreciate from above.
Kaia's breath caught in her throat. This university was beautiful. The hairs on her arms stood up as she peered around until-
"Is that a lake?" She exclaimed, squinting into the distance as hard as she could.
"Uh-," Bucky dug around for the map and tried to find his bearings. Army training really came in handy here. "Apparently so. Yes."
"No way." She breathed out, breath fogging up the glass. It was like something she'd imagined in a book but never thought it to be real. Her hands rubbed along the windowsill, trying to figure out if she could turn it into a seat. It was just wide enough. "This place is amazing."
"You can say that again." A familiar voice spoke from behind her, making Kaia whip round so fast she almost gave herself whiplash. And there was only one person who could ever get her attention like that.
"Yelena!" The girls screamed and ran to each other, almost collapsing to the floor in a pile of limbs as they met in a giant bear hug. "Took you long enough!"
"I know I know. Nat made us turn around because she left a bag behind." It has been an interesting car ride to say the least. Nat had tried to lay down some rules but Yelena was having none of it. Her sister was not going to change anything about the way she spent her time at Pale Oak.
"You drove 5 hours with Nat next to you?" Kaia asked in shock, to which Yelena nodded. "That sounds like hell."
"I think I got the best deal, by the sounds of it." Bucky spoke, coming over to give Yelena a hug. "Hey tiny."
"Hey Buckster." Yelena had given him that nickname when she was 10 and it had stuck, much to Bucky's distain.
"You're never letting that go are you?" Yelena shook her head, a wicked grin plastered across her face.
"Is she here now?" Kaia questioned quietly, nodding her head towards the open door where she could see Melina and Alexei stood chatting to a student rep.
Yelena laughed at her friend's wariness. "Noooo. She ditched us the moment she could. Can't possibly be seen with a freshman now, can she?"
"Hello Kaia." Melina popped her head around the door and smiled sweetly, giving a little wave to practically her third daughter. "We might need to bring your stuff into the room girls. You overpackers are taking up quite a lot of room in this hallway."
Both girls abandoned their bags on the beds, accidentally choosing which side of the room was theirs. The adults were all grateful for the floor space so they could move around without being cornered by boxes as everyone tried to unpack.
Of course the first thing Kaia set up was her record player, wanting to spend as little time without music as possible. Melina had kindly wiped down her desk so she could place it on display, a case of vinyls slotting neatly down the side. She placed a Led Zeppelin vinyl to play, the sound of 'Since I've Been Loving You' coming crackling out of the speakers, the guitar resonating around the empty room.
It took about 2 hours before everything was finally in place. Rugs were spread on the floor, fairy lights strung up, posters and pictures were nearly arranged on the cold stone walls. The room felt a lot more homely than it had done a few hours ago, and everyone stood around to admire their hard work.
"Well I must say, I think it looks amazing in here." Alexei piped up, hands placed firmly on his hips as he turned to inspect the room. "We did a good job."
"It's our home now." Yelena looked at her best friend as she said it and squeezed her hand, like they had done all those years ago at ballet class.
The blinds were still open as the sun had begun to set, leaving the whole room to be bathed in a warm orange glow. They really did have the best view from their window.
"This is insane." Kaia said in disbelief as she hauled herself up onto the windowsill. She watched the tiny people down below just going about their day, chatting with friends and munching on food that they'd brought away from the dining hall. The parking lot was a lot emptier as some parents had said their goodbyes and left already.
"Why don't we go and see what food is available? Somewhere has to have pizza." Bucky felt his stomach grumble at Melina's suggestion and he turned to his sister to help her down from the ledge.
"Can you put mac and cheese on a pizza?" Yelena's voice carried as she walked out with her parents, leaving Kaia and Bucky to follow.
They fell into step beside each other and Bucky threw his arm around her shoulder. "You okay?" He asked, looking across at her as they walked down the hallway.
"Yeah." She hummed in response. "Don't you need to leave soon?"
Bucky poked her in the ribs. "What? You want to get rid of me that badly?"
"No!" Her face dropped in shock. "No- I- that's not what I meant. I just wanted to know when I had to say goodbye."
Bucky rubbed her shoulder lovingly, wanting to lighten the mood a little. With no parents there, Bucky didn't want to let her go just yet. He didn't know when or if he was going back to the army yet. All of this uncertainty made him want to stay. "I booked a hotel about 30 minutes away. So I can come see you tomorrow before I go. Is that good?"
Kaia couldn't stop the smile break out onto her face. Even at 18, she still needed her brother sometimes. "Yeah. I really like that."
This was it. Night one as Yelena's roommate and a student at Pale Oak University.

"I do." Aurelia simply says as she crosses her arms over her chest and scoffs at his words. "Why would you assume that I would expect you to insist? You don't know me and I wouldn't want you to insist at all. I'm not being stubborn, I know that I'll be just fine." She remarks with a roll of her eyes.

❝ i don’t need your help. ❞ (Aurelia to Anyone)

.。.:*☆ "Well, if you say so...." Buck only shrugged his shoulders as he looked at the other, making clear that he would not push his help unless one of their lives was in danger in any way.
Tumblr media
"Like, do not say something like that and then expect I would insist. I am not that type of person. If you want to be stubborn and get hurt, be my guest." Because for some people, in his experience, it seemed to be the only way to actually learn their lesson.

and if i said i'm working on a modern au clegan dog–play fic... then what. if gale makes a joke about getting john a collar and notices heart–on–his–sleeve john looks a little more keen than intended. if john thinks gale's joking the first time he brings up doing a scene like that, and if john ends up really, really enjoying it because it gets him out of his head on rough days, and he likes following gale's instructions, having someone else think for him...

thinking about neighborhood walks with daddies & how different it is for each of them......
steve takes you in the day time, early enough that its not too hot yet. maybe the mailman is out on his route and steve says hi as he pushes your stroller past. as a matter of fact, steve says his to everyone he passes, kids playing in the driveways, homeowners tending to their lawns, the little old couple that sits on the porch and always offers the two of you something sweet to take back home. steve keeps a pocketful of dog biscuits for any furry friends you see, to the point where all the neighborhood pets recognize the sound & smell of him coming.
bucky prefers to take you out in the evenings when theres less people around. he puts a podcast on his headphones while you nap in your buggy, just soaking in the fresh air, quality time, and contented quietness of a calm night out together. if you wake up, he'll help position your seat to make sure you can see the moon following you around like a balloon on a string. sometimes he even runs, his super soldier speed like a thrill ride through the night. as the exertion heated his body up, he takes his jacket off and wraps you in it to protect you from the brisk night air.
