@sunsweets / aoife thatcher “are you alright?”
Popuri stood outside PoPoultry with her arms crossed and brow narrowed, an atypical look for the chipper woman. "Ohhh, he just makes me so—!" Popuri raised her hands, fingers curling into fists and then shaking them as if she had a hold of someone.
Aoife's sudden appearance made Popuri jump and her hands fell to her side. "Aoife! Ah, you caught me, I guess. I just..." Her voice trailed as Popuri thought about the events leading to this moment. Her mistakes, Rick yelling at her, how harsh his tone had been...
Tumblr media
Tears pricked at her eyes and Popuri wiped at them. "I'm—" More tears came. "I'm- I- n-nooo..." The single caring question had opened the flood gates and she was now crying, shaking her head and holding her hands over her face. She wasn't alright at all!

Hey there. I'm writing a story set in New York City and am not American. I have few characters, but most of them are arab or white. I can't help but feel a bit wrong about it, given that America is much more diverse than that, and NYC being an emblem of that. Do you think I should force myself to include more representation or should I just tell my story, and leave that more diverse cast to some other story I could write? I know this is a neverending debate and there are many opinions about it, but I've always agreed with everything you've said in matters of representation in fiction, and so I'd be curious to know your personal answer on it.
I'm a little confused by how you're using "representation," here. It sounds like you think representation = "randomly sticking BIPOC everywhere." I think when most people use that word, it means something more like "create an accurate or at least plausible depiction of a group or place." In actual New York, there are plenty of Middle Easterners and white people who live in relatively homogeneous small communities where they might only see someone of a different ethnicity on the subway. If your story is set in one of those communities -- and you do stick some random BIPOC in that subway scene, because that's plausible -- then it sounds like your characters might be an example of good representation.
(Note: if you're not writing something set in the real world, but it features human beings, it needs to represent humanity as a whole, unless there's a good in-world reason not to. But if it's our world? You can get specific.)
Here's the catch, tho: plausibility is relative. If you've absorbed some biases and haven't done enough research, then you might end up writing something that feels plausible to you, but which isn't actually representative or plausible to anyone else. The way to avoid this is to do the research and check (to the best of your ability) your biases. For example, you aren't American, I assume you've at least visited NYC? If not, you should. You can visit some of the communities I mentioned! You can eat in restaurants, visit mosques, have conversations with actual real people who are living the life you're writing about! If you don't have the time, money, or spoons to do that, there are other ways to do good research -- films and YT/Tiktok videos made by people from the communities in question, for example. But you'd need to watch a lot of them to get a good representative sample.
I recommend this book to all the writing students I've taught at Clarion, and other writer workshops: Writing the Other, by Nisi Shawl and Cynthia Ward. There's a particular part of it that seems relevant here, which is a kind of hierarchy of "appropriate" appropriation, I think first mentioned by Diantha Day Sprouse but included in Writing the Other. Basically it says that if you want to write about a culture that isn't your own, you can learn about that culture in one of several ways: a) You can be an Invader, and just go take whatever intellectual and artistic tidbits from that culture that you want, regardless of how damaging this might be to members of that group. Example: non-Indigenous people who write about actual secret practices, or who encourage the desecration of sacred places. b) You can be a Tourist, in which you're still mooching from that culture, but at least you're figuratively paying someone for it and accepting tidbits that the culture has chosen to sell. Example: getting a sensitivity reader. Or c) you can be an Invited Guest, who brings in as much as they take out, and who has formed relationships that are beneficial to all involved. Example: being part of an exchange program, both as a student and later as a host, and maintaining those friendships outside of the program.
The goal is to be an IG, but that isn't always possible. Tourist is still better than being an Invader. (...I feel like I'm leaving out a category. It's been a while since I read the book; any more recent readers want to check me here?) But the closer you can get to actually participating in that culture, the more your work will be informed by reality instead of biases or misinformation, and the more likely your work will read as plausible not just to you, but to your widest possible audience -- people familiar with the culture and people who aren't.
(I'm a little concerned about your phrasing of "force myself to include more representation," note. Why would that need to be a forced thing? A writer's goal should be to write something that feels lived-in and authentic to [if it's a real place] most people's experience -- not to meet some arbitrary standard, but because that's how you master immersion and characterization. If good immersion and characterization feel forced to you right now, that suggests you need more practice. I recommend writing short stories!)

currently rewatching riverdale bc my 2 year long middle school purgatory pulled me back in Violently and my god do i despise jughead jones. when i was 12-14 i adored him and the ship between him and betty but he’s just so. EW. the jokes he makes, the way he talks, his stupid little american girl doll teeth. and like yes, part of this is because of my undying hatred for c*le sprouse, but like back when i was watching originally i hated him and loved jughead, so now i think it’s just me maturing and realizing he’s terrible. and the annoying thing is, HE HAS POTENTIAL. his season one character could’ve been cool if his personality wasn’t that of a bacteria infested dishrag. his shit with his dad? him wanting to get his mom and sister home? him being homeless? HE COULD’VE BEEN SUCH A COOL CHARACTER. it’s just him and his weird, pretentious ass way of interacting with people that ruins all of that. i don’t know how betty put up with him for so long, but i’m personally tired of their relationship after 3 episodes of them being together so… idk… where’s archie come save your girl

do you think xavier will even be in season two? with everything that happened? :(
Of course he will. He's part of the main cast, and no anti's rage is going to change that. Netflix knows he's innocent - they were the ones telling him to stay quiet the whole time; you can bet your ass that they had people look into this and if they'd come to any other conclusion than the one that Percy is innocent he would have been publicly fired months ago - and the rest of the world knows it, too, apart from a few hateful people who want him to be guilty to validate spreading their hate for him.
It's not the first time an actor in a popular Netflix show has been falsely accused of sa; it's not been that long since the same thing happened to Lili Reinhart, KJ Apa and Cole Sprouse from Riverdale and their roles on the show haven't been limited or anything.
Even if you argue that all Netflix wants is money and that they'd fire someone who's been proven innocent, not caring what kind of message that would send or what dangerous example that would set in the future (namely how easy it would be to actually ruin someone's entire career with a lie on twitter) - and that it could happen with all their popular shows btw - then they'd have fired him already. Bear in mind that once you set the example that false accusations have any power, that they can get someone innocent fired, Netflix would be biting their own asses because the number of people falsely accusing Netflix's actors would instantly skyrocket, sadly. Percy's case isn't an outlier, sadly, and the way Netflix handles it is a make-or-break moment for the future - and the way they did handle it already btw (by telling him to stay quiet for so long, as is generally advised when someone is falsely accused of a crime, because the house of lies these girls have built was bound to crumble eventually) proves they never planned to let him go.
And if this ask has been inspired by the article going around assuming that he would have no role or a limited one in season 2 because Jenna said they were cutting any romantic ties: Xavier was never just a love interest, and viewing him as such does his character great injustice. A) there's so much to explore of his background etc that's only been hinted at so far, and B) they literally ended the season with them making up and forging that tentative friendship that can easily be built further. C) Jenna and Percy are friends, and with Jenna now being executive producer there's no way in hell she'd scratch the romance and just wave Percy bye-bye because that wouldn't make sense when she already said she was interested in Wednesday and Xavier's friendship.
So yeah, I'm not worried and neither should you be 🖤

Jughead Jones: Cole sprouse
Tumblr media
Cole Mitchell Sprouse was born in Arezzo (Italy). His parents Matthew Sprouse and Melanie Wright are Americans, they taught English at a language school in Tuscany. Cole was born 15 minutes after his twin brother, Dylan Sprouse. Cole Sprouse was born on August 4, 1992, his zodiac sign is Leo. Cole was named after the jazz singer and pianist, Nat King Cole. Four months after his birth, the family moved back to his parents' native Long Beach, California.
Tumblr media
Based on his personality both on screen and off, Cole Sprouse could possibly be an INTP (Intuitive, Introverted, Thinking, Perceiving) personality type. He has demonstrated a great interest in photography, writing, and the arts, indicating his intuitive and creative side.
Tumblr media
Cole and his brother, Dylan, began acting at the age of eight months in a diaper commercial at the suggestion of their grandmother, Jonine Booth Wright, who was a theater teacher and actress. Sprouse's role was shared with his brother—some of his first roles were shared roles as a baby or child in commercials, television shows, and movies.
On May 31, 2020, Sprouse was arrested after joining protests in Los Angeles for racial justice following the murder of George Floyd.
Sprouse is a comic book fan and worked at the Meltdown comic book store in Los Angeles.
Tumblr media
Sprouse has an avid interest in photography. In 2011, she launched a personal photography website and took classes at NYU. She has had assignments for major fashion publications including Teen Vogue, L'Uomo Vogue, Sunday Times Style, and W, among others. He is represented by LGA Administration.

Okay, for starters....Like PP's dress, but it's waaayyyy too much for the event and OFC she made MM's premiere ALL about herself, endlessly attention whored.....and her face looks REALLY weird these days....
PP literally treats SweatBoi like her servant AND looks miserable unless there's a camera....(he's legit her nu SlaveTay!)
Tumblr media
A) even if this were true (no), how fucking high school/moar confirmation the BB is (at least intellectually) 12....
B) And yet they ONLY are ever together once every 6 months, for very public events to Powerpuff Girls together, because they still think that's what makes them relevant....interestingly, Crotchi didn't bother to actually see PP when she did her photo ops at Coachella (despite name dropping her in an interview)....and MM doesn't bother, period.
C) Just realiced: MM has now led her own, likely successful theatrical release and while it was so bad I had to turn it off, Musica did get good, albeit entirely unjustified reviews....ironic, no, BB that all the Plaiderdale peeps "unemployed" during the strike, while PP scabbed are now moar successful than she is, huh????
Tumblr media Tumblr media
TBF? It's for the cameras, but SweatBoi looks kinda threatened, no? DW, CB, so long as you're a good slave, she'll keep ya around!
Tumblr media
Like I said, "true slave".....dude, normally this task is assigned to a low level flunkie.....but does show how juvenile you are about, literally, everything....that you think it's amazing that he holds her purse...
Moooommmm!!! I don't wanna gooo!!! I hate your friends and these dumb clothes you bought me from the International Male Collection at Sears are itcheeeeee!!!
(not sure what's "hot" here, BB.....cuz I see zero chemistry and, again, two people who appear to actively dislike one another....)
Tumblr media
Oopppsss!!! PP got wasted!
Tumblr media
When the International Male Collection at Sears tries out its nu Cole Sprouse line....without consulting Cole.....and fails...
OML.....MM and Crotchi clearly dislike CB....they won't even acknowledge him! And, again, moar distant MotherBoi!
Tumblr media
You're 12 again...also, too, also:
MOTHERBOIIIII!!!!
Tumblr media
Ummm.....noooo, that's "such a Cole move", so, once again....
A) Copycat!
B) MOTHERBOIIIIII!!!!
C) Nose tries to shade Cole, weirdly, with this....while confirming the copycatting....
D) "identify"?????
And, lastly, why does PP need to buy "old $$$$" SweatBoi nu clothes from the International Male Collection at Sears, anyway???? (and, ofc, those clothes look cheap and ugleee to meeee!)
Errmmm.....again, nope....she dragged her slave along, cuz time to refresh her lipgloss....
Tumblr media
As u admit upthread, Nose, it old, uglee and he's repeating (which, again, you TRY and pretend isn't copycatting Cole/somehow awesome when done by SweatBoi)

Do I think C*le Sprouse is hella pretentious where it's annoying at times? Yes. But nothing about him speaking about his experiences in a relationship has to do with it? Are you just mad your fave may not be perfect? I hate to tell you everybody screws up in relationships. Like you’re also ignoring the parts where he said he wasn’t always the most emotionally available and took accountability for his faults too.
