I drew some concept -esque art for my would be ca:cw redraw / au

- in this canon, Shaw, Ross, and Mr. Sinister have come together to manipulate, falsify, and overall cause a series of botched / failed missions regarding metas, mutants, and other superpowered individuals in order to push the Registration Act. They are responsible for the incident and deaths in Lagos, as well as several other “publicly botched” missions across several teams- including several teams of Avengers, X-Men, and other meta-human groups.

(Exposition: General Ross is involved in all of this because of his blatant hate and want to control anything meta, superpowered, or mutant. Ross is the immediate push for the creation of the RAFT, which is introduced here. Shaw is involved for the access the act would give him regarding superpowered, meta, and mutant individuals so he may manipulate, trick, and control people into becoming essentially an army for himself. Mr. Sinister is involved for similar reasons to Shaw, except he wants access to all mutants, metas, and superpowered individuals so that he can have access to their DNA, powers, and genes ala his background regarding mutant gene-splicing and gene manipulation. The RAFT exists as both a containment prison, but also as Shaw and Sinister’s labs.)

Lagos happens in my redraw / au very differently. The Nigerian government contacts the Avengers team regarding a series of Hydra agents appearances and attacks. The Avenges arrive in Lagos after getting info that Crossbones is in the area and the lead on these attacks. After a small conflict regarding these agents and Hydra, crossbones is knocked down by Captain America Steve. After a small confrontation, Crossbones activates a bomb vest, intent on killing Steve, himself, and the crowds surrounding them. This detonation is stopped by Wanda, who makes it to the area just in time. Lifting crossbones and his vest into the air, Wanda is able to disperse the energy and weight of the explosion evenly, causing it to burn out in the air above them. After lowering Crossbones’ charred and burnt body, Wanda and Steve share a small moment- which is cut short when the tall building nearby suddenly suffers a series of explosions.

Shouts, screams, and general terror is heard from the building and the crowd around the two Avengers. Upon rendering aid to the building and returning home, They find that a video has been released to the internet and news stations everywhere. The video features the incident with Wanda, Steve, and Crossbones- including the section in which Wanda lifts Crossbones’ body up high. However, instead of showing wanda disarm and dissipate the explosion like she had, the video cuts to the building exploding and people shouting. The avengers, specifically Wanda, have been framed for this accident and the deaths involved. Eye-witness statements are mixed, and a growing distrust of super-powered individuals surges- especially after several more “botched” missions come into public speculation.

A set of three WinterHawk stories. The first is how they become soulmates and how they deal with the complications. The second is how they manage their relationship with the never-endingly annoying press. The third is my favorite. When Clint is hit with a magical curse that removes all of his senses, he and Bucky have to figure out how to continue Avenging – not to mention whether or not they even can. There’s plot going on too – the first two mostly with Bucky’s Hydra programming, and then the third with Clint’s determination to do everything himself despite having Bucky as backup.

Bucky’s going through his recovery in Wakanda when there’s an attack, and Steve sends Bucky with Clint to safety. It goes pretty well, until it doesn’t. This fic had me on the edge of my seat in the second half.

Bucky Barnes wants Steve to stop looking for him. So obviously the best way to send a message is to kidnap Clint and threaten him until he delivers it. Except Clint’s really bad at convincing Steve to do anything, plus he’s really easy to kidnap, and now there’s a dog, and is it really Bucky’s fault that he keeps kidnapping Clint? ‘Course not. Guy’s too kidnappable, that’s the real problem here.

Ain’t That a Kick in the Head by Finely Honed

(Explicit, new relationship, no powers, disabilities, PTSD)

So technically this is the third in a series that focuses on Stony, but as this is a prequel to the main storyline, it works as a standalone really well. Clint and Bucky are newly invalided out of the Army, and have to navigate not only their new relationship but also their new personal situations (Clint’s hearing loss, Bucky’s amputation) and the reverse culture shock of being civilians again. It’s the trifecta of trauma! But no, seriously, this isn’t half as angsty as it sounds, and their joy in each other is the best part of the fic.

FIC REC WEEK 47 – CANON DIVERGENCE

AUTHOR SPOTLIGHT: RiotFalling

What RiotFalling excels at, in my opinion, is Bucky and Tony's intricate inner monologue. Their descriptions of what each character is going through at any given moment really get under my skin. And on top of that, RiotFalling's voices for them are hilarious – their banter makes my entire day every time I read one of their fics.

A Work in Progress: You and I

Pairing: Bucky/Tony Rating: M Words: 33,937 Tags: BDSM AU, Banter, Cuddling

Summary: It’s not just the cabin that’s under construction, it’s Tony and Bucky and this thing between them that was supposed to be temporary and is seeming less and less so as time goes on.

Reasons why I love it: This fic cleansed my pores, watered my crops, paid my taxes. It gave me everything I love – hilarious banter, Dom/Sub goodness, shmoopy smut, it's all so incredibly satisfying to read. I love it more than I can say, and I really hope you give it a shot if you haven't already.

I had no choice (but baby to get it right)

Summary: After all those years of furtively dreaming about it, reading everything from scientific papers to romance novels, after all the times he told himself not to but still hoped, Tony thought he knew what to expect if this day ever came. Finally, after all this time, all the worrying and wondering and telling himself to just give up already, he finally meets his soulmate and finds out what all the hype is about, and it has to be like this. It just has to be Barnes.

Reasons why I love it: Aaaah, this fic is everything! The inner monologue is perfection, both Tony's and Bucky's feelings and thoughts feel so real, I'm in awe. And the ending puts the biggest smile on my face. Also, there's fantastic art by Sagana_Rojana_Olt in here, which you definitely don't want to miss out on!

Pairing: Bucky/Tony Rating: T Words: 4,499 Tags: Bodyguard Bucky, Valentine's Day, Mutual Pining

Summary: So maybe three years in Bucky is completely in love, and this might be his first bodyguard gig but he's pretty sure that's breaking Rule One. It's definitely one of the top five rules, at the very least. He can't even be surprised with himself either, not when it's Tony. Bucky’s job is basically to hang out with his crush all the time, and sure sometimes he gets shot or stabbed or has to physically drag Tony out of his lab when he starts sleep-deprived-rambling about building some piece of tech from a scifi movie, but most days Bucky doesn't have a single thing to complain about. And then there's Valentine's Day.

Reasons why I love it: This is the cutest fucking thing, oh my god, I love it. All of Tony's friends obviously being in on his plan just makes it even better. If you need some good vibes today, definitely check this one out, it's amazing!

I call out to you

Pairing: Bucky/Tony Rating: M Words: 18,528 Tags: BDSM AU, Therapy, Light Angst

Summary: Making friends is not something Bucky thought he’d be doing after all these years, but here he is, taking a risk. On himself, on Tony, on everything, it seems. Tony is... unused to being happy. That’s not to say he IS happy, but the feeling residing in his chest these days feels a lot more like happiness than anxiety. It’s fine. Everything is fine. Right?

Reasons why I love it: RiotFalling and WhiteIronWolf do a fantastic job with the two perspectives in this fic. I love the therapy session in the beginning, it really suits Bucky's character, and it's amazing to see how well he's doing for himself. And of course, Sam is the best bro, I love him. This fic is wonderful, and you should definitely read it!

Those Three Words (Let Me Help)

Pairing: Bucky/Tony Rating: M Words: 21,267 Tags: Flashbacks, Bucky Needs a Hug, Angst

Summary: Something is wrong. It’s all wrong and Bucky just wants— He hurts and he can’t— it wasn’t supposed to be like this. This isn’t how Tony thought his Friday would be going, but he’s going to do whatever he can to help. Even when things go further off plan than he ever expected.

Reasons why I love it: The way this fic is written really got under my skin, especially the beginning. It's visceral and raw and left me with a lingering sense of dread, it's amazing. RiotFalling and WhiteIronWolf really outdid themselves here! I hope you give this one a shot, because it's amazing.

After returning the infinity stones, Steve doesn’t go back in time with Peggy, and instead comes back to the present. He still passes on the shield to Sam Wilson so he can live an ordinary life.

Alternate ending 2: No one is dead after returning the stones and the Avengers are intact. This is for my own delusions because I want everyone back together.

Elaborating (yes, this is long, wotever, I have lots of thoughts and chronic insomnia):

Regardless of intention, this change implies that the first three CA movies are a separate fandom from CA:BNW. That isn't the case, at all. CA:BNW is Captain America 4. It's not a reboot and it's not like James Bond, where there's historically been relatively little continuity among films. It's a Captain America movie, full stop. There are other cases where fandoms with multiple entries aren't broken out into such granular detail, so this wasn't an inevitable choice.

There are a couple of implications to build on with this. First, users have always been able to filter for specific movies, using their titles in the "Additional Tags" sections. As this post mentions, that would still be the case here. There are also additional tags to specify who's Captain America, plus, obviously, character tags. There really wasn't any need to change the fandom tag.

This is also going to result in a lot of fics being mistagged, since everyone who's been writing CA fics set after Endgame, with Sam as Captain America, are now going to have to manually go in and change the fandom. Like, I think it's important to emphasize that this will disproportionately affect Sam!Cap fics, making them harder to find.

Next, a lot of people in the notes are claiming that this makes filtering easier. As someone who's actually in the CA fandom, I disagree. This is worse for fics that span from CA:CW to CA:BNW, for AUs that are in conversation with the CA movies, but which don't have a specific Captain America, and for AUs where Sam becomes Captain America prior to CA:BNW. Yeah, all of those fics could just be tagged MCU or tagged with both CA tags, but that's a vaguer solution than just having a CA (Movies) tag.

There's also the fact that like... CA:TWS and CA:CW are both Cap movies with both Mackie and Evans! I think a lot of people are just going to end up tagging their fics with both fandoms, which renders this kind of pointless.

And then saying that you can tag both "Marvel Cinematic Universe" and "Captain America: All Media Types" just... doesn't really make sense? Again, that's a tagging structure that's much less specific than just having a tag for the CA movies.

Finally: I know talking about racism in fandom is fraught, I know people are just going to be like "it's not that deep," whatever. "many Steve Rogers fans will likely want to filter out movies where he doesn’t appear" is a statement that would be perfectly neutral and fine if we lived in a perfectly neutral world, but we don't.

The phrasing here is both inaccurate and deliberately dancing around the point -- you know there are going to be plenty of CA:BNW fics where Steve appears. The actual impact of the tag split is that people can (theoretically) filter out fics where Steve isn't Captain America. Choosing to make that distinction against a backdrop where people have continuously posted shit about Sam not really being Captain America, where there has been an immense amount of resistance to having a Black Captain America, is not a choice that exists in a bubble.

And I'm going to assume best intentions and believe that wasn't the goal here. But also, yeah, I think you have the critical thinking skills to recognize that this does more for the "not my Cap" crowd than for the people who have been writing about Sam as Captain America since Endgame, and even before.

There are people in the tags talking about archival best practices. As someone who has both an academic and professional background in that sector, controlled vocabularies should both reflect the needs of the user community and consider the wider context in which they're being applied. This change does neither.

On Your Left! — Changes to Captain America Fandom Tags

Hello! In the near future, Marvel tag wranglers will be updating fandom tags on AO3 to separate the upcoming Captain America movies featuring Sam Wilson as Captain America from the trilogy of films with Steve Rogers as Captain America.

To do this, we will be renaming the fandom Captain America (Movies) to Captain America (Chris Evans Movies) and creating a new fandom named Captain America (Anthony Mackie Movies). Both will be made subtags of Marvel Cinematic Universe and Captain America - All Media Types.

In summary:

Captain America (Chris Evans Movies) will refer to the 2011, 2014, and 2016 movies featuring Steve Rogers, Peggy Carter, and Bucky Barnes. 

Captain America (Anthony Mackie Movies) will refer to the 2025 movie Brave New World featuring Sam Wilson and Joaquín Torres. This fandom tag will also refer to any sequel Captain America movies starring Sam Wilson in the title role.

Fans interested in reading about both movie series can include both Marvel Cinematic Universe and Captain America - All Media Types in tag filtering. The current fandom tag for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (TV), which is a subtag of Marvel Cinematic Universe but not Captain America - All Media Types, will also be unaffected by these changes. We’ve included more details of our reasoning below, which better explains why we’re making this change.

Why are you making two separate fandom tags? Can’t everyone just keep using “Captain America (Movies)”?

Despite both having the superhero name “Captain America” and the same continuity, fundamentally the main character has changed between the original trilogy and the new 2025 movie. We also wanted to hopefully make it easier for fans to differentiate between which movies and continuities they’re discussing. Many Sam Wilson fans will likely want to filter for the movie where he’s the central focus; conversely, many Steve Rogers fans will likely want to filter out movies where he doesn’t appear. 

We’re specifically using “Chris Evans” and “Anthony Mackie” in the fandom tags as they’re the most recognizable and consistent aspect of the movies. There’s no consistent set of directors between all Chris Evans Captain America movies, and actor names are much more recognizable than including multiple years in the fandom tags. This style of making fandom tags named after actors is similar to other fandoms on AO3. For example, there are many James Bond movie fandom tags which differentiate via the actors’ names. 

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is also not the only time Captain America has been adapted to the big screen: there’s a 1944 movie starring Dick Purnell, a 1979 movie starring Reb Brown, and a 1990 movie starring Mat Salinger. The current fandom tag Captain America (Movies) is worded in a way that technically encompasses these unrelated movies as well. It doesn’t make sense for these unrelated continuities to share one fandom tag, so we would have changed the existing Captain America (Movies) tag to be more specific regardless of the release of Brave New World. 

Like we mentioned above, fans interested in reading about both MCU movie series at once can filter for both Marvel Cinematic Universe and Captain America - All Media Types.

Why Mackie Movies instead of Brave New World?

The movie title has already changed several times in between promotion and release. It’s also highly likely Marvel will make sequel movies. Formatting the tag as Captain America (Anthony Mackie Movies) prevents the disruption of renaming the fandom tag in the future. 

We will be creating an Additional Tag for Captain America: Brave New World, similar to how there are Additional Tags for Movie: Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014) and Movie: Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021). We hope the Additional Tag will help fans filter for specific movies within the broader series of movies.

Why does Brave New World get a separate fandom tag while First Avenger, Winter Soldier, and Civil War would still share? 

Captain America: The First Avenger, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and Captain America: Civil War all encompass the trilogy centering around Steve Rogers. While Captain America: Brave New World is also set in the same continuity, the main character and actor has changed, and the role of Sam Wilson has changed from being a supporting character to the main focus.

It’s likely that Marvel will release sequel movies to Brave New World, which will not receive separate fandom tags and would instead also be covered by the new Captain America (Anthony Mackie Movies) tag. We hope that separating the fandom tags now will prevent the messiness of renaming tags again in the future, and also allow fans to filter for works that focus on the specific Captain America they are looking for.

Hey, thanks for the ask!

So, the suit AI AU basically gets its beginning from Mikitta unknowingly sowing a seed of doubt in Tony's mind, about the safety of this Ultron project. He ofc knows it's risky from the get-go, but maybe he should have a bit more care, here. So he implements more security measures, one of which is that Ultron, when he comes online, doesn't have the kinda freedom of access he has in the movie.

So, yes, he's still off-balance when he comes online. He's still looking for a body that isn't there. But he doesn't go through that Avengers and world history dive he does in the movie. (For the record, I don't claim everything stated in the linked video is accurate, but it at least gives a closer analysis of what Ultron finds during his internet dive.)

Either way, this results in him accepting his core programming and Jarvis' words more at face value, at least for now. Jarvis successfully contacts Tony, who leaves the party to check up on Ultron.

Now, after some introductions, Tony offers Ultron the possibility to learn the ropes via protecting one person, the other resident newbie—who is, it's worth noting, also plenty capable of protecting themself should anything go awry, a detail Tony doesn't particularly emphasise. Ultron is in this moment quite aware of the limits of his reach, so he quickly agrees. He is... confused. But he will learn.

So, he will be the suit AI for the suit of armour Tony gives to Mikitta.

The thing is, with these changes, the whole CA:CW movie is moot. Wanda never becomes an Avenger. There are no Sokovia Accords, Zemo never loses his family, Bucky is never blamed for a bombing, which never happened, Tony and Cap never find themselves at odds, T'Challa doesn't lose his father... I'm not quite sure where to go with the AU, in terms of a more overarching plot!

I might make Wanda a villain, I suppose, considering that is where canon had her end up. Perhaps Pietro joins the Avengers in her stead :') We'll see!

2. Where do you get your fic ideas?

The most random corners of the universe, honestly. Beyond The Walls Of Sleep came to me while playing Dead Space and theorizing the suit mechanics compared to Tony Stark's Iron Man. It ended up a three part AU starting during the Battle of Manhattan and stretching all the way up to CA:CW.

When I read Stephen King's Misery, it sparked the idea for 4 Strong, which eventually morphed into a post-apocalyptic road trip with a focus on found family dynamics.

A Walk Down Lafayette Street actually originated from Pinterest suggestions on how to conservatively stabilize a hip fracture. Sounds random, right? That's because it is. I have no idea how the algorithm decided that was relevant to my interests, but somehow it turned into a first-person time-travel romance with plenty of twists and turns along the way. In which nobody breaks their hip, in case you were wondering.

12. Do you outline your fics? If yes, how detailed are your outlines? How far do you stray from them?

For me, it all starts with a simple prompt that lingers in the back of my mind until it grows into a scene. I may jot it down or just keep it in my head. If it sparks more ideas or makes me curious about other aspects, I know it has potential to become a Big Project.

That's when I start outlining and coming up with a rough plot from beginning to end. I do tend to deviate from my original plan as I get caught up in rewrites and edits, though. In fact, my latest work has gone through five rewrites so far, and now I've discovered a sixth version that intrigues me even more.

That's why I like to include a "Behind The Scenes" and "Deleted Content" section at the end of my stories; it gives me a chance to share some of the ideas that didn't make it into the final draft.

25. What’s your favorite part of the writing process (worldbuilding, brainstorming/outlining, writing, editing, etc)?

Hm, tough one.

I like outlining, but I only really enjoy it when I can brainstorm with another person; unfortunately, these days it's rare for me to find someone to bounce ideas off of.

Writing is a love-hate relationship for me. There are times when the story just leaks out of my brain like a burst dam, but there are also tortuously long dry spells where every word feels like it's being dragged out of me with a pair of rusty pliers.

Editing is where the magic really happens. I can sit and obsess for days about using one word over another, polishing up dialogue, and sometimes even rewriting entire scenes or overarching plot points. It's the crucial stage where I'm almost finished...or about to start from scratch again.

I have a really hard time saying ‘Okay, I am done, this is it’ and just publish my work. And of course, once it's out there, I almost always seem to notice typos, grammatical errors, and glaring mistakes that somehow slipped through my twenty-five prior rereads.

But what I do enjoy is going back and revisiting my works after some time has passed—enough that I can't remember everything I've written. I might read a passage or two and think… but what if?

And a new fic is born. :)
