"Evacuated Farmers Allowed To Return To Pick Apple Crop," Owen Sound Sun-Times. October 2, 1942. Page 2. ---- May Enter Military Area at Certain Specified Dates ---- GO BY 9TH LINE ---- Former residents of the St. Vincent and Sydenham tank range have been given permission to remove the fruit from the farms formerly owned by them. Announcement to that effect was made on Thursday night by Brigadier E. C. Spencer, Camp Commandant at Camp Borden. Special permission has been received from the Department of National Defence in order that the former owners will not lose weir fruit. Brigadier Spencer pointed out that when the Department purchased these properties it included all the fruit in the area, and it is only because of a concession on their part that they are now being permitted to go into the area and take it out. It was officially announced that firing would cease on the range at midnight on Thursday nights for a three week period, and will not be resumed until midnight on Sunday night. The open dates on which the farmers will be allowed to get their fruit are Friday, Saturday and Sunday, October 2, 3 and 4: Friday, Saturday and Sunday, October 9. 10 and 11, and Friday, Saturday and Sunday, October 16, 17 and 18 It is to be clearly understood that only fruit will be permitted to be removed from the premises. All entry to the area will be made on the 9th line of St. Vincent, where there will be a military guard, and those gathering the fruit will sign in and out at the south boundary of the 9th line. On no condition should any former resident endeaver to enter the area at any other point than the 9th line gate.
The military authorities feel that this should be a sufficient length of time to permit of the gathering of all the fruit in the area. Brigadier Spencer also pointed out that it was never intended that there should be any waste of the fruit in the area, as had not this permission been granted soldiers under the order of the Transport and Supply Department would have been sent in to pick the fruit. which would have been taken to Camp Borden and used by the soldiers.

eep i have a test on all of ww1 and ww2 (and the interwar period! yay!) tmrw and i'm not very ready!! anyways i'm going to summarize most of what i know ABOUT WW1 under the cut. mostly for my studying but if you want to see you're welcome to read it. BEWARE IT IS LONG
BACKGROUND
scene opens on Germany, a young nation eager to prove itself as strong to the other European powers, namely Britain, who has lots and lots of colonies at this point. (the sun never sets on the British empire!). Britain also has the strongest navy. Germany believes in "Weltpolitik", meaning aggressive expansion.
Germany has recently beaten France in the Franco-Prussian War and acquired the territory Alsace-Lorraine. France is angry and embarrassed. It went from being the biggest European power under the rule of Napoleon to this!! France hates Germany.
Russia is poor but MASSIVE and has a HUGE POLULATION. if it is awaken, it will do serious damage. luckily it is "sleeping" for now.
The Austria-Hungarian empire is made up of many different nations along the Balkan Peninsula who hate being part of the empire. The Balkan Peninsula is known as the powder keg of Europe because a single spark could make it blow up.
There was also the Moroccan Crisis where Britain decided to support France (against Germany) in Egypt and the Suez canal. There is more here, but basically it solidified the hard feelings between Germany and France/Britain.
Everyone starts beefing up their military because conflict is coming!
ALLIANCES FORM
Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy ally themselves to form the Triple Alliance. Germany organized this to try to isolate France.
Britain, France, and Russia ally to form the Triple Entente because they were a bit worried about Germany (especially France).
THE SPARK
Archduke Francis Ferdinand, heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary, goes to visit Sarajevo with his wife. He thinks the people will love him! He doesn't know that he is visiting during a parade for Slavic independence. They don't like him. Gavrilo Princip, a member of a nationalist group called Black Hand, kills Francis and his wife.
Austria-Hungary is ANGRY. It blames the government (who didn't organize the assassination, but who weren't sad about it either) and makes unreasonable demands to Serbia, who refuses.
Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia.
Russia mobilized troops to protect Serbia.
Germany declared war on Russia for mobilizing its troops. Germany was aligned with A-H, so it was at war with Serbia too. Germany also declared war on France because it was allied with Russia (and Germany just didn't like France).
Germany marched through Belgium to get to France quickly so it could defeat France before Russia "woke up". This was called the Schlieffen plan.
Britain declared war on Germany because it had secretly agreed to help Belgium remain sovereign. Now that Britain is at war, so are its many colonies. The war has breached European confinement.
WAR WAS LONG. NO SIDE MOVED OR GAINED MUCH TERRITORY. MANY DIED.
CANADA'S INVOLVEMENT
Men had the idea that war would be quick and glorious so lots signed up!
Germans and Ukrainians were forced to register with authorities and many were sent to internment camps.
Black and Indigenous men faced obstacles trying to enlist because of racism.
French Canadians enlisted less because they had, for the most part, been in Canada longer than British Canadians, so they didn't feel as emotionally attached to France. They also didn't appreciate being encouraged to go fight for Britain because they weren't British.
Women's suffrage and prohibition became two large issues across the country.
Conscription - Borden had promised not to have conscription, but then he took it back. People were angry. He gave women with husbands overseas the right to vote because they would want to send help to the war to bring their husbands back. Yay?
THE BATTLE OF YPRES: Germany introduced poison gas and created a gaping hole in the defences. Canada remained strong and closed the gap. It was the first European battle Canada fought in and it established itself as a powerful country. yippee.
THE BATTLE OF THE SOMME: one of the bloodiest battles in history for all sides. 68 of almost 800 Newfoundland soldiers survived the first few days.
BATTLE OF PASSCHENDAELE: seen as a symbol of ww1's senseless slaughter as thousands died on the field (either killed, drowned in the mud because it was super rainy, or got trenchfoot (don't google it. yucky.))
VIMY RIDGE: this becomes a source of national pride to this day. Canada was able to take a ridge held by Germany that nobody else had succeeded in taking. Ultimately it gave Canada its own seat in post-war discussions and made it recognized as a country. HOW DID WE DO IT? They build a system of caves and tunnels and a railway to transport explosives. During the attack, a creeping barrage of soldiers made its way up the hill, in between heavy artillery fire (in front of and behind them) that was also making its way up the hill. This way, when they stopped firing, the Canadians were on top of the German soldiers. This is called the Vimy Glide. ARTHUR CURRIE was the general who came up with it.
TURNING POINTS:
Not really a turning point but i don't have another section: GALLIPOLI: Australia was a British colony so it had to fight for Britain. Britain threw Australians at the Ottomans as a feint. It was a slaughter.
ITALY CHANGED SIDES due to a secret treaty granting it territories that Italian people lived in. (After the war, they weren't given this territory, leading to the rise of Mussolini).
THE US ENTERED THE WAR: Americans had wanted to stay neutral, but they hated Germany thanks to British propaganda. A German U-boat sunk the Lusitania, which contained American civilians. THE ZIMMERMAN TELEGRAM was from Germany to Mexico saying to attack the southern states to the US was busy fighting and couldn't join the war. The US intercepted this, got angrier at Germany, and joined the war. This helped wear down the Triple Alliance (now down to 2 because of Italy).
PEACE TREATY WAS SIGNED ON NOVEMBER 11 1918
there was then a revolt against the German government because German people had believed they were winning.

“GERMAN-BORN SOLDIER GIVEN TWO YEARS,” Barrie Examiner. June 11, 1942. Page 1. --- Had Unlawful Registration Card and Failed to Register as Alien ---- CAME TO CANADA, '29) --- Convicted of unlawfully having in his possesin a registration certificate which was not issued to him, a 30-year-old soldier. Eric Horace Brandt, was given a term of two years in Portsmouth Penitentiary by Magistrate Compton Jeffs yesterday morning, and on a, second charge of failing to register as an alien between December. 1941, and  April of 1942, was given twelve: months to run concurrently.
When apprehended on April 15, he was in A-9, Canadian Armoured Corps (Advanced) Training Centre. (at Camp Borden, under the name of Reuben Schilski.
Constable James N. Clish of the" R.C.M.P. Toronto, detailed to investigate the case, told that he found that Brandt was born in Germany and came with his parents to Canada in 1929. After war broke out he enlisted in the Canadian army while living with his family at Lashtown. Sask.. in February, 1940, but was discharged in June, 1940, on a nominal excuse of being under age. At that time he was suspected of being pro-Nazi.
Witness stated that in November, 1941, he received permission to. move to Vancouver, but turned up later at North Battleford. Sask.. stayed overnight with a friend, Reuben Schilski, took the friend's registration certificate, and enlisted at Lloydminster under that name.
While at Camp Borden he had been in Toronto and registered at the Metropole Hotel as Roy Davis.. His father was believed to be in the German army.
The accused, of slight, build and normal appearance, told in detail his actions since 1927, when he claimed the family came to Canada. To the statutory question regarding church affiliation his reply. was, "My father is a Lutheran." He also told that he had been notified to return to Germany before war broke out with the assurance that after six months' labor camp and two year's army camp, he would be allowed to return to Canada, but he had decided to stay here. He had written asking for a guarantee of return but had received no reply.
To a question of Crown Attorney Frank Hammond, he stated that he had not taken the matter seriously but could easily have gone back to the German army if he had wished.
Mr. Hammond's view of the case was that the background gave it more serious proportions. The young man was not acting foolishly and if he had been doing so we could not afford to take a generous view:
"He is a potential danger," the Crown said.
Magistrate Jeffs thought that the situation looked like a need for internment.

Hier zien we elkaar weer. Ingrid is onderweg vanuit Malmö.

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media

KARKAT: WHAT FUCKING FAITH?
KARKAT: AS JUST DISCUSSED I HAVEN’T DONE A DAMN THING TO EARN ANYONE’S FAITH.
KARKAT: SO FAR ALL THIS “TROLL REBELLION” HAS AMOUNTED TO IS A WHOLE LOT OF DICK ALL, WITH AN ADDITIONAL SIDE SERVING OF JACK SQUAT, FOLLOWED UP BY A FINAL COURSE OF GETTING TO WATCH OUR TOP ANALYST, CLIPER BORDEN, BEING FORCED TO DANCE TO AVOID LIFE IMPRISONMENT IN A LABOR CAMP ON LIVE TELEVISION AND MAKING A COMPLETE ASS OF HIMSELF.
SWIFER: Poor Cliper.
SWIFER: He could record a stat like nobody’s business but no one ever taught the boy how to dance.
SWIFER: If only we knew, this all coulda been avoided.
KARKAT: NO!
KARKAT: HE SHOULDN’T HAVE TO DANCE IF HE DOESN’T WANT TO.
KARKAT: THAT’S WHAT THIS IS ALL ABOUT SWIFER.
SWIFER: Oh.
KARKAT: BUT WHAT’S THE POINT IF I CAN’T EVEN SAVE ONE OF MY LIEUTENANTS FROM MORTIFYING PUBLIC EMBARRASSMENT FOLLOWED BY A LIFETIME OF HARD LABOR IN THE CAKE MILLS?
KARKAT: IF I CAN’T PROTECT MEMBERS OF THE SO-CALLED RESISTANCE FROM THE FICKLE AND CRUEL VAGARIES OF JANE’S INSANE, PASTRY-BASED SHADOW DICTATORSHIP, HOW ARE WE SUPPOSED TO PROTECT THE COMMON PEOPLE?
SWIFER: Golly. Look Commander. That’s a big question that I think you gotta take up with someone more in the know than myself.
SWIFER: I just swif the floors.
KARKAT: OH, YEAH. RIGHT.
KARKAT: SPEAKING OF WHICH.
KARKAT: THE LEAK IN THE CEILING?
KARKAT: YOU KNOW, RIGHT ABOVE THE PLACE WHERE WE KEEP ALL OF OUR FRAGILE LOGISTICS EQUIPMENT?
KARKAT: DIDN’T I TELL YOU TO FIX THAT A FUCKING WEEK AGO?
SWIFER: Well sir you told me to “take care of it” and I sure as heck took care of it!
KARKAT: THEN WHY IS IT STILL LEAKING?
SWIFER: Oh. By “fix” you meant that you wanted me to plug the crack!
KARKAT: WHAT THE HELL DID YOU THINK I MEANT?
SWIFER: I thought you meant for me to mop up the water that had gathered...
SWIFER: And then use that water to swif the bejeebus out of the floors.
SWIFER: Which is, by all accounts, what I did.
KARKAT: UGH.
KARKAT: YOU KNOW WHAT?
KARKAT: I’M GOING TO GET SOME FRESH AIR.
KARKAT: BY THE TIME I GET BACK I EXPECT THE HOLE IN THE CEILING TO BE “““SWIFED””” THE FUCK CLOSED.
KARKAT: OR AT THE VERY LEAST
KARKAT: PUT A FUCKING BUCKET UNDER THE LEAK OR SOMETHING.
SWIFER: Sir! Oh my gosh! A bucket? Sh-should we be seen...
SWIFER: Consortin’ with a bucket?
SWIFER: *Together*??
KARKAT: OH MY GOD.
KARKAT: GROW THE FUCK UP, EGGMOP.
KANAYA: Well
KANAYA: That Was A Lot
KARKAT: OH SHIT.
KARKAT: I DIDN’T REALIZE YOU WERE STILL ON THE LINE.
KANAYA: We Hadnt Finished Our Conversation About The Clandestine Transportation Of The Mother Grub
KANAYA: Which I Hope You Realize Is Still An Operation Of Grave Importance At Least On Par With The Terrible Threat Of The Leak In Your Office
KARKAT: SORRY. I KIND OF HAVE A LOT GOING ON RIGHT NOW.
KANAYA: I Can See That
KANAYA: Please Do Not Be So Hard On Swifer She Really Does Try Her Best
KARKAT: YEAH. I KNOW.
KARKAT: TO BE HONEST THAT WASN’T ABOUT SWIFER AT ALL. OR EVEN ABOUT THE LEAK.
KANAYA: Yes Karkat That Was Obvious
KANAYA: Rose And I Have Been Following The Dance Off Tribunals Very Closely This Month
KANAYA: Your Lieutenant Does Not Have A Chance
KANAYA: But Do Not Let It Weigh Heavily On You
KANAYA: Everyone Who Joins The Rebellion Knows That Being Exiled To The Cake Mills Is A Very Real Possibility If They Are Caught
KANAYA: That Includes You Karkat
KANAYA: If You Bear The Responsibility For The Lives Of Every Member Of The Rebellion Youll Crack Under The Stress
KANAYA: And As Much As You Are Loath To Admit It
KANAYA: You Are The Face Of This Movement
KARKAT: YEAH.
KARKAT: I HATE IT, BUT YOU’RE RIGHT.
KARKAT: FUCK YOU, YOU’RE ALWAYS RIGHT.
KANAYA: As My Wife Likes To Tell Me Often
KARKAT: UGH. FUCK HER, SHE’S ALWAYS RIGHT TOO.
KARKAT: HOW THE HELL DO YOU TWO TOLERATE EACH OTHER?
KANAYA: Quite Thoroughly Enthusiastically And Often
KARKAT: WOW. UGH. OK.
KARKAT: THAT’S ENOUGH OF YOU FOR TODAY.
KANAYA: Oh I Am Sorry I Did Not Mean To Rub My Interspecies Happiness In Your Face I Understand That Its A Sore Subject
KARKAT: THE ONLY THING THAT’S SORE IS MY EAVESDROP FUNNELS FROM LISTENING TO YOUR ENDLESS MOTHERING.
KANAYA: Karkat I Am Sure That If You Were To Just
KARKAT: DON’T
KANAYA: Call Dave And Ask Him To Join You...
KARKAT: WOW, IS THAT ANOTHER CAVE-IN I HEAR HAPPENING SUDDENLY ALL AROUND ME?
KANAYA: He Would Be At Your Side Instantly
KARKAT: KANAYA WE’RE BEING OVERRUN BY IMPERIAL DRONES! IT’S HORRIBLE! THERE’S DEATH AND FIRE EVERYWHERE, AND ALSO I CAN’T HEAR A FUCKING WORD YOU’RE SAYING, SO IF YOU WERE TO EVER TO ATTEMPT TO REFERENCE THIS CONVERSATION IN THE FUTURE I WOULD HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YOU WERE TALKING ABOUT
KARKAT: SO IT WOULD PROBABLY BE BEST FOR EVERYONE INVOLVED IF YOU’D DROP THE SUBJECT AND NEVER MENTION IT AGAIN!
KANAYA: Okay Karkat Have A Good Walk Ill Talk To You About The Mother Grub Tomorrow
KANAYA: Goodbye And Take Care
KARKAT: OH. YEAH. YOU TAKE CARE TOO. TALK TO YOU TOMORROW.
