Sception Reads Cass Cain #38
Tumblr media
Batgirl (2000) #18 - September 2001 Writer: Kelley Puckett Pencils: Damion Scott Inks: Robert Campanella Colors: Jason Wright
Ooh, a guest in Cass's book. Is this the first we've seen that? I think it might be. We get to see whether Tim gets a better showing in Cass's book than she's had in his.
Far more importantly, though, this issue starts with a dream sequence, one that I've referenced a few times already. I misremembered it as happening much earlier on in Cass's run, because it is so fundamental to understanding who (this version of) Cassandra is as a character.
Tumblr media
It starts with 8 year old cass in a stealth suit (if there was one thing I think could improve this flashback, it would be if she was wearing the grown up batgirl suit all clearly too big for her, like the cover of issue 4), sneaking around the Batcave, a mischievous smirk on her face like a kid who knows they're getting away with something. She's tiny in a world too big for her as she creeps up onto a computer panel to reach the bat-cookie jar. There an expression of gleeful triumph on her face as she reaches a hand into the jar to snatch...
Tumblr media
No, she's caught! Batman, Dick, Alfred (somehow? Has she even met Alfred?), Helena, Tim, Jean-Paul (nice nod there), they've caught her with her hand in the cookie jar neck of the man she killed. She's grown and wearing her batsuit now but she's still so small and they're so big and they're calling her a murderer while Barbara sits dejected, looking up to say 'How could you?' so hurt that Cassandra would betray them all this way, would betray her specifically, sullying the legacy of Batgirl with a murderer's bloody hands, and then the dead man speaks, and it's not the man she killed anymore, now her fingers are buried in the throat of her Father, David Cain, as he admonishes her. "Did you really think you could fool 'em forever?"
...
There's just so much happening here. The cookies - the treat, the prize she's stealing, labeled with the bat symbol? That's being Batgirl. And saving people as Batgirl is the only way she knows how to do to atone for what she did. Except she's a murderer, she deserves to be punished, not redeemed. Worse, being Batgirl is fun! It's exciting and thrilling and the best life she could possibly imagine. It's a reward, not the punishment she deserves, and deep in her traumatized and guilt-ruined inner 8 year old's bones she knows she's getting away with something she doesn't deserve.
Sooner or later her new family will catch her, they'll learn the truth, they'll realize she's not good like them, she's only pretending, really she's a murderer, and when they find out she's sure they'll all turn on her. From this we can infer that her isolation isn't just something imposed on her by Bruce, it's also something she's doing to herself, or willingly allowing Bruce to do to her. After all, the closer she gets to the others, the sooner one of them will realize that she doesn't belong. The more it will hurt when they cast her out.
And there's David Cain calling her out. David, the only one who knows her secret, who knows the real her, the murderer.
....
This is such a good look into Cassandra's character and mental space, into how she sees herself as Batgirl. How dearly she loves it and how badly she wants it and how sure she is that she doesn't deserve it and it's only a matter of time before the others find out and feel the same.
...
I would also say it's fantastic foreshadowing, because this is clearly building to a number of major reveals & confrontations, right? When Bruce finally has to admit the truth and does try to reject her, tearing their family apart in the process as Babs sticks with Cass and the rest are forced to choose sides. Or wondering how Cassandra will react when she finds out that Babs already knows, that she already knew almost the entire time, and that she doesn't care, still loves her, still is proud of her, still wants her to be Batgirl - will she feel relieved, or will she lose respect for Barbara for not holding Cass to the same impossible moral standard that she holds herself to? One could imagine a conflict of Babs vs. Bruce over whether Cassandra is worthy of the costume only with Cassandra taking Bruce's side rather than her own. And David Cain is still out there, potentially throwing the whole thing into an even deeper level of turmoil.
Sadly I can't say this is good foreshadowing, because none of that really happens. Fantastic set up, but not quite landing the follow through. But we're still in the set up part, and the set up part is so, so good, and this dream sequence is maybe the best two pages of it.
...
Tumblr media
So yeah there is an actual story in this issue, it's not just a two page dream sequence. I've spent most of my analytical energy already so I'm not going to go in depth, but it's a cool team up story with Tim, where Tim is trying to take down a mob boss while Cass goes after an assassin the boss hired then failed to pay. It's good stuff actually, and well worth a read, but I just want to pick out a couple bits...
Tumblr media
We get an explicit limit/exception to Cass's body-reading ability.
Tumblr media
Just a bunch of cool art, I like this panel a lot.
Tumblr media
We get this moment where Cass opens up a bit to Tim, who starts to connect with her in a way that he hasn't in their previous meet ups.
Tumblr media
And it ends on this nice moment of Tim admitting he's been cold to Cassandra and apologizing, extending a hand in friendship. And it's a really nice moment, though the fact that this is coming from Batgirl's creative team makes me wonder Robin's creative team will maintain the better relationship going forward.
As for the question of Whether Tim comes off better in Cass's book than Cass did the last few times she showed up in his, I mean, obviously. What's maybe more noteworthy is that Tim is more likable in this book than even he is in his own, at least as of the last couple issues we looked at. He's thoughtful and intuitive here, self aware, capable of self reflection, capable of recognizing when he's been in the wrong and taking steps to correct himself. All in a story that still emphasizes his detective skills and tech savvy. It makes me sort of wish Tim had his own book... Unfortunately he did.
Of that run of Robin I've only ever read the few issues we've talked about in this project, most notably the two we looked at most recently, and those two especially were were pretty miserable. Not in the sense of being sad and heavy like Cass's book often is, just kind of awkward and unpleasant and mean spirited. Weird choice for a Robin title, imo, you'd figure people would be looking for something a little more light hearted out of that book, with a more likable protagonist. Then again it's really not fair of me to judge an ongoing book when I've read so little of it, so I'm just going to let it go there.

contrast, the contributors to Stanford University’s “One Hundred Year Study on AI” argue that “there is no race of superhuman robots on the horizon,” and such a scenario probably is not even possible. Given the complexity of the technology, however, predicting if and when an AI superintelligence will arrive may be a fool’s errand

enforcers are meant to correspond to the tarot cards this makes me wonder what would it be like in a persona series crossover where they interact with the people from persona series who match their respective tarot card like bleublanc with naoto ( detective prince) and chihaya mifune , mcburn with morgana and Yosuke Hanamura like the joker, narukami and the p3 protag and akechi with campanella for the fool tarot card , or Ann and rise and yukari with the lovers tarot card interacting with Luciola, shirley with mamoru hayase, akihiko sanada (p3 portable) , teddie, hifumi togo for the star tarot card , cedric and the persona series Akinari Kamiki Yumi Ozawa Ayane Matsunaga , Toranosuke Yoshida (p5) for the sun tarot card,
fuuka yamagishi , yukiko amagi, makoto nijima from persona series with leonhardt for the high priestess tarot card
Lucrezia Isselee with Mitsuru Kirijo Persona 3 Margaret Persona 4 Haru Okumura for the empress tarot card
sayoko uehara, ichiko ohya with renne for the devil tarot
I really don't feel like that it is important what kind of tarot cards they correspond to. Because... what would you expect from someone like McBurn meeting someone like Morgana? They have not much in common, aside from the fact that there is more to them than meets the eye, but their characters aren't really alike at all. I can't see Campanella and Akechi getting along that well either.
In all honesty - and I think I said it before - I find it really hard at times when I read the descriptions of the tarot cards to feel like they really fit the characters much. You have to look really deep to find the connections, if you find any at all. And I think at the end, the tarot cards don't really describe the characters, but are more likely to give a hint to their destiny. Especially since, if you look at the Persona games, the three girls carrying the lovers-persona are not much alike at all and I would not compare them in the slightest with Luciola. So I have no Idea what it would be like for them to meet. I actually think people like Shirley would give a damn about corresponding to the same taro card or having the same destiny or something.
I don't think the two different ways Persona-Games and Trails-Games go fit with each other anyway. And as I said, I am not a big fan of Crossovers.

1853, Casa Nostra
fandom: the house in fata morgana
relationships: maria campanella & jacopo bearzatti
characters: maria campanella, jacopo bearzatti
words: 1555
Written for Maria Week 2022 (hosted on Twitter). Stolen moments of Maria Campanella's childhood with her best friend. The beginnings of her unyielding and fatal resolve, in a time yet unstained by the hatred of a blood feud between families. Read below or on AO3.
“W-what do I do? It’s all over you! I-”
“Shut it, Maria! It just looks worse than it is."
What is she supposed to say, when he levels such a look at her?
Congratulate him for putting on his big boy pants and toughing out the pain?
This boy. He’s all of twelve years old, yet he fancies himself to be a fighter.
Sì, Jacopo, you certainly showed those older boys who’s the boss. What the hell is up with men and this reckless, bullheaded urge to fight losing battles?
There’s blood beginning to crust under her fingernails, and it’s all she could do to keep herself from gnawing them into short little stubs. That’s one thing to wash off once they reach the hideout; Jacopo’s face needs looking after, before she can even think of herself. She forces her trembling hands to still as the idiot sways on his feet. Someone needs to keep him upright, and that someone turns out to be her. Figures.
“You didn’t have to do this.”
Her arms come up to hold him as he nearly topples over. Jacopo’s head slumps against her chest; the crimson dripping from his hair and face stains the lace of her dress. Her long gloves are both goners, removed and used to wipe some of the blood off. Ah, well. Today’s outfit is the awful peach dress that her mother chose for her, it wouldn’t be such a big loss. Hah, she just has to sit through a scorching rebuke. Perhaps Mamma would even box her ears.
Not as big of a hit as what this fool took for her.
“Need? I wanted to.”
The usual bite is missing from his voice. Unable to bite her fingernails, the unladylike habit not yet browbeat out of her, Maria instead finds herself worrying her lip.
“Let’s get to our place first.”
“Before what?”
He keeps talking. She fights the urge to pinch him in the arm, hard enough to make him squeal. Maybe this is a good thing, a mouthy Jacopino means he’s gonna be fine.
Right?
“Before you tear me a new one?”
“Oh, I would, Jacopino, but you already took enough losses today.”
“What - they ran off!”
One slightly bungled attempt at slinging his arm over her shoulder later, Maria makes her way towards their little home. She has to stoop a little to accommodate for the shortie, not missing the way he huffs when he notices.
Because of course, he does.
It’s a weak little breath, barely the scoffs he’s capable of, that leaves his slightly slackened mouth.
“One day, I’ll be taller than you.”
‘One day, I’ll protect you.’
Maria wants to cry at hearing this.
This makes her relax. Some tension leaves, softening her clenched jaw. If he could still be offended, as is his talent, then he’s fine.
Because if he’s not -
Then she’d find some way to make those boys’ lives hell. It’s not the sneering, arrogant words that make her blood boil. It’s not ‘Your father’s just a whimpering little lapdog’, because, for one, her father can defend himself just fine. It’d only take a week at most, for word to get back to him and those curs would lose their tongues. Not even ‘And you’re just the little bitch birthed from that unambitious dog Campanella’ gets to her.
Jacopo, in all his foolhardiness, jumps the loudmouthed youths they come across earlier.
A Bearzatti, coming to the defense of a Campanella? That is already preposterous on its own. But he’s always been different. The other children of the land that her grandfather owns are soft-bellied and weak; they do not understand her, and the legacy that runs in her blood.
The blood that spills on Sicilian soil today isn’t hers, but it may as well be. He is her other half in all the ways that count.
Maria is a girl. And girls can’t always fight with their fists, not in a world dominated by men. Men who take what they want with their fists, with their guns, and with their money. But there are other ways to fight. Words have been hammered into the malleable metal that is the young Maria, forging her into something not quite as hard as steel — for she is only ten — but the beginnings of something like her beloved guns, wrapped in a layer of silk.
Revenge is best served as a knife in the dark; an unexpected, slow and insidious poison works better than immediate savagery.
These are the words she learned from her Mamma.
_____
Awareness comes back piece by piece, like the broken pieces of a sunken ship floating back to the surface.
Jacopo stirs on the makeshift bed, the salty taste of iron still in his mouth. There’s something soft pressed against his skin, wrapped around his forehead. When he lifts a hand to tug it off, a sharp ache lances up his side and makes him stop.
His other hand is wrapped around small, slender fingers. They are more calloused than one would expect.
“Ma… ria?”
A head of golden hair is tucked against his other side. His friend is sprawled on her front, sitting against the side of the hay bale. Why would she not sleep on the other bed…? The bonnet she dislikes wearing is haphazardly clutched in her free hand, nearly falling out of fingers lax with sleep.
He starts at the sight, sitting up and jostling himself.
“Ouch-!”
The noise rouses Maria, who lifts her head and blinks back at him, the haze receding from her green eyes. When her gaze locks on Jacopo, she furrows her brow and tightens her lips into a straight line.
They stare at each other, and he fights the urge to fidget like a misbehaving child.
For once, Maria Campanella’s bright and mischievous eyes are unreadable. This alone makes him feel like his mamma caught him sneaking an extra cannoli at dinner. He feels himself begin to sweat.
He’s known her since they were eight, scrappy young kids left alone by others their age. Their first meeting is memorable, what with the fisticuffs that ensued. He refuses to acknowledge that this blonde girl in a ruffled dress nearly won against him, even years later. Maria would claim it’s a tie, but the smirk on her face tells another story.
“You’re stupid, you know that?”
Maria breaks the silence, squeezing his hand. Is that a good sign?
“Who’s stupid?! Me, or the one who got shoved by those bastards and smiled?”
He rises to the bait anyway, feeling his cheeks darken. He squeezes back even as he raises his voice, and the sound of his strident proclamation — the impudence in it — makes a little life return to Maria’s eyes. Jacopo feels like he passed some unspoken evaluation.
“Why wouldn’t I smile?” His friend fires back. “Papa would hear what happened, and those boys would regret it.”
“They called you a bitch!”
“Am I not?”
This brings all of the gears in his mind screeching to a halt. He gapes at her, and she has the nerve to roll her eyes at him.
Maria takes his silence as her cue and speaks the most perplexing words Jacopo Bearzatti, twelve years old, has ever heard.
“Mamma says that it’s good for a woman of the cosca to be a bitch. It means we’re not falling over for the stupidity of man.”
“Uh? That’s-” He flusters for a response, feeling quite out of his element. “That’s still not a nice thing to call you…”
“I don’t need to be called nice things. Those people are nobodies anyway.”
“When I grow up and work for your father — or you,” Jacopo blurts out with his foolish mouth, “I won’t let them say things about you.”
Maria finally cracks at this, the strange, almost frightening look she’s worn since she laid eyes on him melting away. Her laughter bounces off their hideout’s walls, and that’s when Jacopo notices the morning sunlight peeking in.
“Ahaha! Does Jacopino want to be my bodyguard? You’re a skinny shortie!”
The sun casts a halo about Maria’s golden hair, but an angel, she is not. The ruddy flush on her peachy skin as she doubles over laughing mirrors the red quickly spreading on his tanned face.
“You never cut me any slack! I’ll work out and be like those big men in the cosca, just you wait!”
The sun also brings out the bruises on her knuckles in stark relief. This reminds him of the glove currently wrapped as a makeshift bandage around his head.
As her laughter eventually lulls, Jacopo sighs and lifts her hand, inspecting the damage.
“You still throw one hell of a punch.”
_____
After the kick in Jacopo’s side that sends the young boy rolling on the ground, the thug also finds himself going down as pain erupts between his legs. Jacopo still cringes at the memory. What finally chases those brutes off, in the end, is the murder in Maria Campanella’s face as she peels off her fancy gloves and throws her entire weight into her fist, driving it into one ugly mug.
‘Every bruise on my knuckles is one less finger for you later, by the way.’
‘Now scram. The more I look at you, the more I want to be a bitch.’

FlashFicFeb - Prompt 8 - Weapon
And so now they think I’m a supervillain. Great. How binary. How remarkably small-minded. How boring.
And how ridiculously annoying. I am simply a man who wants to know as much as I can about the world around me. I don’t want to hurt anybody, I don’t want to threaten any of their pathetic governments, I just want to see things. I just want to know things.
But in this world, you can’t do that. Knowledge is power and they don’t want anyone to have that much power unless it’s one of them or one of their lapdogs. One of their banal “superheroes.”
So here I am, building a weapon. Which is the last thing I want to build! It’s the most boring thing I could build, but they have given me no choice. They’ve pulled me away from my peaceful research and turned me into an enemy of the state. For what?
Yes, I may have fucked with the stock market a little, but programming an AI that studied patterns and day traded isn’t illegal! I needed some starting wealth to build my base and my lab. It’s not like I robbed a bank or something.
And yes, I admit, I did steal a few trinkets from the Museum of Natural History, but those fools didn’t realize they were housing three parts of a magical orb that could look into men’s minds! It was just being wasted under glass next to some old broken bowls and dishes!
To be the master of science and magic! Is that not worth a few white lies and broken rules? To build armor that is both infused with nanotechnology and imbued with the power of the Egyptian god Thoth!
But no, apparently I “broke international treaties,” and “caused an economic catastrophe,” and “ripped a hole in the fabric of reality.” Come on, people, omelets and eggs!
And so I had to abandon my brownstone in Park Slope! With the charming little gargoyles and parquet floors. I had to move to fucking Antarctica, which is just a logistical nightmare. And I had to sink all of my free time into constructing a neutron ray.
Not that I want to use it! It’s really just to make a point and to get people off my back. You leave me alone and I’ll leave you alone. I just want to do my research in my giant Brutalist ice base. All I’m asking for is food, supplies, rare earth minerals, and an easy way to shuttle my more buxom fanbase to the south pole.
Some women, (and men!) get me and aren’t turned off (and maybe are turned on) by someone whose head has grown 245% its original size and who has glowing onyx armor fused to his body.
But I’m getting off track. I need to get back to my work. Reading the minds of everyone in the northern hemisphere and finishing my targeting algorithms and perfecting croissants and practicing La Campanella.
Let’s all hope I never have to use this weapon and that the rip in time-space closes on its own, as I said it would.

Hi! It’s Ana again! Sorry about the information i missed!
I’m a scorpio, with sagittarius rising and aquarius moon!
I would like to know how M feels about me and if I should invest in this relationship(i don’t know his chart, only that he’s a sagittarius)
Thank you so much, and if you find it to much answering thentwo questions you can answer only one!
Thank you so much again and have a great day!
No worries, Ana! I’m glad you decided to try again, so let’s see, yeah?
Tumblr media
The Fool + Ame no Uzume by Wednesday Campanella
So it seems that these two questions of yours are dependent on one another, due to that, both will be answered, as there seems to be a certain continuity to them. What that means is that, at the moment, M’s feelings for you seem to be directly linked to your effort in investing in the relationship.
The Fool warns you towards the duplicity of this statement, meaning that perhaps you’ll have to invest more effort, time and emotions for it to work out positively than the other part - this could lead you to a point fo exhaustion without reciprocity in which the losses will be more than the gains, but there can also be a probability of success. This, as compared to how M. feels about you, indicates a very tiny seed that is present, but without intent an direction won’t grow.
The music leaves the impression that there are hidden things that have been kept bottled up, as such, the continuity pertains - before deciding whether you want to take that bet and invest in putting the effort to mature this spark of emotion that M. feels towards you, try to first have a self check and discover how you feel towards M. instead, and how worth they are worth of having your investment and time. If that answer is positive, do that process with them, maintaining an open and communicative link so that doubts have no place to grow.
That’s it, Ana! I hope the reading was helpful, let me know what you think about it, yeah?
Whichever decision you take, I wish you all the best with a clear mind and a light heart. ✨

Justice League Annual #1 “Germ Warfare”  Keith Giffen- Plot and Breakdowns; J.M. DeMatteis- Script; Bill Willingham- Pencils; Dennis Janke, P. Craig Russell, Bill Wray, R. Campanella, Bruce Patterson, Dick Giordano- Inks; Bob Lappan- Letters; Gene D’Angelo- Colors; Andy Helfer- Editor
Summary:  A mysterious zombie-like contagion is infecting people near Kord Industries facilities. The League splits into pairs to investigate and soon become infected themselves- all except for Martian Manhunter, whose alien DNA makes him immune.  Desperate, J’onn puts on the Helmet of Fate to try to learn how and why this plague is occurring.  The helmet reveals it to be the work of “a sentient cell. An accidental mutation that they had no idea they’d even created. Fools! It extends its influence by total cellular takeover of the body- then passes its contagion from person to person,”  which seems legit.
When the zombie Justice League realize they can’t turn J’onn, the infected squish into this gross amalgamation:
Tumblr media
Manhunter tosses the Helmet of Fate at the sprawling mass of humanity
Tumblr media
and then somehow traps the infection within his Martian body.
Tumblr media
Manhunter assures Guy that “as long as the cell is within me, you’re in no danger.” Which, okay.  I guess it works because that’s the end of the issue.
I Love the 80s:
Tumblr media
The Walking Dead:
Tumblr media
Thoughts:  Man, this is a letdown after last issue’s Booster Gold showcase.  Willingham’s art is fine for an 80′s superhero book but it’s not really on the same level as Maguire, even with a bevy of all-star inkers.  The plot of this issue is nothing we haven’t seen before, and the jokes don’t reach Bwa-Ha-Ha status.
This issue is worth reading for two reasons:  First, we get a little information about the Blue Beetle’s off hours.  Readers of his solo title know all about Kord Enterprises, but this area was unexplored to this point in Justice League.  Second, Dr. Fate has been MIA for almost the entire series and he is a cool character.  Otherwise this annual is skippable.
