Steve Harrington has been awake for fifty four hours. With luck, he'll be able to eke out another eighteen. Three days seems to be the sweet spot, even if he only makes it there half the time and, of that half, it only works half the time.

It's better than nothing.

Maybe four days is the sweet spot. Ninety six is close to one hundred, and that seems like a good omen.

Omens don't really matter though. What matters is staying awake.

So, Steve chugs his coffee and walks into the conference room. Coffee isn't enough, not nearly, but it'll do until he gets desperate enough to take something.

He really does try to only take them when he's desperate. It's easier that way, to just do it when he feels like he needs to rather than measuring dosages and remembering times. Hours start to blur around hour forty of being awake.

He walks in, sits down in the chair closest to the door, and is met with a withering glare from Eddie Munson.

Listen. Steve isn't happy about this either, but at least he doesn't look like he stepped in dog shit on the way here. Then again, Steve doesn't have the luxury of ever looking truly unhappy.

Eddie is a rock star. Mean is part of his brand, while mean is the antithesis to Steve's.

Whatever.

"Are you kidding me?" Eddie says, still staring at him, but Steve knows he's not who he's asking.

"He's the best person for the job," Chrissy, Eddie's manager, says.

"We don't need him."

Someone taps Steve's left shoulder. He turns to see Jeff, the lead singer of Corroded Coffin, give him a warm smile.

"Nice to meet you, Steve," he says, and Steve shakes his proffered hand.

"Happy to help," he says, and it's only half a lie.

The drummer and the bassist - Steve would probably be able to remember their names if he wasn't so exhausted - wave their hellos from a few seats away.

"Hi, Steve," Chrissy says.

He takes another swig of his coffee and gives her a little wave in response.

"We don't need a pop singer to write lyrics for us," Eddie says, still not letting this go.

"Yes, you do," Steve says. He sets his coffee cup down on the table and opens the folder he brought with him. "I read through the lyrics of every one of your songs."

"You didn't even listen to them?"

"Would have taken too much time."

That's a lie. Listening, even with the lengthy guitar solos, probably would have taken less time. But Steve needs something to fill the hours when he's supposed to be asleep, and reading, that slow process with its ample, awakening frustration, is the perfect thing.

"You became so much less interesting after your first album," he says. "Every one of your songs talks about the same thing. Conquering evil, killing demons, blah blah blah."

"That's what's in right now," Eddie snaps.

Out of the corner of his eye, Steve catches the drummer and Chrissy make the same motion. They pinch the bridges of their noses, clearly frustrated.

Steve sees why Chrissy wanted to talk to him.

"It is," he concedes. "But I also read the lyrics of every song by the bands with top ten hits. They don't talk about it nearly as much. They sing about other stuff. And they don't use an F major chord in every one of their songs."

"We don't-"

"We kinda do, Eddie," the bassist pipes up. "I'm a little sick of playing F."

Eddie takes a breath. Steve takes the opportunity to take a pill.

He found a way to make it less obvious for people who have something to say about it. Steve will take one from his pocket, yawn, cover his mouth, and swallow it dry. Easy peasy. They don't notice, he doesn't have to deal with people who don't get it making comments.

Except when he does, this time, Eddie narrows his eyes. Like he knows what he's doing.

Steve doesn't like that look.

"Have you read my stuff?" He won't ask if Eddie has listened to any of it. He knows the answer is no, if he keeps bringing up genre like that really means anything.

Eddie doesn't respond. He keeps those narrowed eyes trained on Steve and stays silent.

"Didn't think so," he says, and he slides over the thick stack of papers Robin stapled together for him last night. "Here's everything. Read it. Tell me if you like it. I'm only helping you if you give a shit. This goes two ways, and I don't want to waste my time if you think I'm wasting yours."

Eddie doesn't take the stack, but the drummer, sitting next to him, tugs them closer. "Thanks."

"Let me know tomorrow."

"Tomorrow?" Jeff says, eyebrows raised.

Steve forgets that most people don't actually take advantage of their twenty four hours.

"End of the week," he says instead, and he relaxes when Jeff does.

The drummer starts flipping through the pages while the bassist looks over his shoulder.

"Need anything else from me?" Steve asks Chrissy.

"I don't think so," she says. "I'll call you back to set up a time for Saturday."

He's amazed by the fact that someone as sweet as her works with someone as pretentious as Eddie.

"Sounds good," he says, and he walks out, trying to ignore the feeling of Eddie's eyes on him as he goes through the door.

It only halfway works.

The pill should kick in soon, within a half hour, maybe shorter because of the coffee. Maybe he'll write something. Maybe he'll work on the piano melody he's been tinkering with for the past week. Maybe he'll read the latest book Robin picked up from the library, something interesting enough to be worth the frustration of the moving letters, something that will still fill the time.

He'll make it to seventy two hours. Then he'll crash because his body is a worthless piece of shit, and he hopes this is the half of the time when he doesn't have any goddamn nightmares.

Maybe he should pop another pill, just in case.

A/N: Again, this took over a week for me to write because I get distracted easily. It's a shorter one, more like a blurb, but it's cute and does the job 💕

Daisy Jones and The Six Masterlist

There were many things you could look past when it came to The Six's behavior. Their constant arguments were one of them.

Once the disagreements started, you knew better than to stick around and watch it play out. So you just took your things and sat on the back porch, waiting for the yelling to die down.

On most days, it was Billy telling everybody to fuck off. Other days, it was Eddie telling Billy to fuck off. And some days, it was Karen telling them both to fuck off.

Being their neighbor, you heard most of their arguments. I mean, there wasn't much space between your houses and they weren't exactly quiet people.

Regardless, you had grown to love them. You, Karen, and Camila hung out every Thursday night at your place so they could get a break from whatever shit the boys were getting into.

Other days, Warren came over with his drumsticks to test how they sounded on your pots and pans—which he claimed "sounded different" than the ones they used at their house.

He'd spend hours just banging on different pieces of metal until he found a beat he liked. Then, he'd take your face in his hands, loudly say, "I'm a genius", and run back to show Billy what he's figured out.

Of course, Billy told him to talk to him when he wasn't high on marijuana—which wasn't often.

Those were the moments you enjoyed. Not wanting to ruin your friendships with the band, you stayed out of any drama that ensued between them for your own sanity. Sure, you had plenty of things you could say, but you'd never be able to finish a sentence without being spoken over.

So you kept your mouth shut, grabbed a bottle of wine, and sat in what had become "your chair."

Tonight was like most nights, the band was having a small spat. Billy was irritated that Daisy was there, Graham and Karen were God knows where, Eddie was sulking, and Camila was trying to fix everything.

You were in the same spot as always, rocking back and forth with a bottle in your hand, looking up at the endless array of stars.

It was peaceful and oddly humbling—knowing you were just a tiny fragment in the world. God, you were drunk off your ass.

Light footsteps behind you broke your train of thought and you watched as Warren came into view.

"Hey, neighbor," He said with a smile, nursing a bottle of beer, "Mind if I join you?"

"They're still fighting?"

He shrugged, sitting beside you in the other rocking chair, taking a swig of his drink, "Billy's not happy."

"When is he?" You scoffed, throwing back your wine, finishing the bottle, "He's always in a fucking mood."

"That's Billy for you. Always grumpy."

You dipped your head back with a groan, "I don't know who's worse—him or Eddie."

"Oh, Billy. It's definitely Billy."

Unable to stop yourself, you burst out laughing. The alcohol was starting to take a toll on your physical state, "So, what brings you out here? You stargaze often?

He grinned at your teasing tone, breaking eye contact and looking down at his feet, shaking his head, "No, no, just wanted to keep you company. And see if you'd do weed with me."

"Better than the alternative."

"What's the alternative?"

You gave him a knowing look, "Not doing weed with you."

You and Warren were laying on the floor of the back porch, laughing hysterically at something he said—but you couldn't exactly remember what he said—and neither did he. That itself added to the humor of it all. At least, it did for you.

Nothing could disturb the two of you, not the lights going out, Julia's crying, or the loud sound of the swarm of people inside of the house.

"So she walked in to see Eddie in a dress and Graham in nothing but his—his—" You couldn't even get the words out without laughing.

Warren slapped the wooden boards beside him, laughing so hard he was practically snorting, "I wasn't any better, I was a pirate."

You kicked your legs, holding your stomach, "I can't—I can't breathe—"

Warren sat up, leaning over you, "I can give you CPR."

You were pretty out of it, but you understood what he was saying. The thing is—you didn't want him to give you CPR.

"We could just go to my place instead."

Warren raised his brows, "You think we can make it that far?"

"I think we can at least make it to my front lawn."

He got on his knees, grabbing the rocking chair to pull himself up. The chair swung back, causing him to fall back down to the ground.

You looked over at him—and as soon as his eyes met yours, the two of you burst out laughing.

Pushing yourself up off the ground, you reached your hand out, "Come on, let's get you out of those clothes."

You've never seen him run faster in your life.

back then, it was easy to get into studios, wear something a little flashy and boom you’re in. after seeing the reoccurrence of the group ‘the six’ alongside daisy jones, you took it upon yourself to hang around them more often.

you lingered at the door, listening for instruments. you didn’t want to walk in on a take.

“hey babe,” you heard warrens voice from behind you. “hi warren.” you turned around quickly, you were faced with a tall, fit man, with a wife beater and slightly tight pants. “we’re not recording a take, don’t worry.” he walked in front of you to open the door for you. “after you.” he smiled.

you walked into the room and seeing a soft atmosphere. eddie creating a bass riff, julia dancing to the riff with her mother, billy and daisy revising lyrics, karen and graham were no where to be found.

“this was way before we knew they were screwing to be honest.”

“warren, ‘bout time.” eddie smirked with cigarette hanging from the side of his mouth. he rolled his eyes as he walked closer to julia and camila. “hi mija.” he picked julia up in his arms.

you watched as he bounced her up and down to eddie’s riff. “she loves this riff…” camila laughed as she brushed her hair behind her head. “i can tell.” you smiled.

“you always used to find something that could hold you up, your knees would be just a’going.”

camila watched the way you adored warrens careful touch with julia. “do you want one y/n?” she spoke softly before placing her chin on your shoulder. “wha- huh? you mean now?!” you turned around with a panicked look.

“no! no… don’t be like me,” she sighed as her eyes glanced over to billy entranced by daisy, as if they were the only people in the room. “in time… you think warren would want one?” she looked over to him taking julia to his drum set. you watched as he carefully placed the big headphones on her and placed her on his lap. he handed her two drumsticks and cupped her hands and slowly starting playing a rhythm.

“i don’t think he’d want a baby with me.” you shook your head with a chuckle to follow. “why would you think that y/n.”

“i’m not fit for it cam. i don’t want to bring a kid out in this world… it’s cruel. what if i’m not a good mother!” you quietly yelled to her. “what? you’d be an amazing mother. i thought i wouldn’t be able to handle jules. believe it or not, i was crying almost every night. it’s natural but you know what else is natural? you becoming a good mother.”

you smiled at her words. “this may sound weird but i wish you were my mother.” you chuckled as you looked down. “i’ll be your faux mom.” camila lifted your head up by your chin as she glanced in your eyes.

you could depict the hurt in her eyes, this conversation was more complex than it sounded to anyone else. all you could do was telepathically apologize to camila. she sent back an ‘it’s okay.’ with her eyes.

“your mother… she was a strong woman. an extremely strong woman.” you sniffled as you put a smile back on your face.

you stayed at the house where the band (minus cami and billy) lived. it was late when everyone got back, everyone had a quick bite of chinese food and headed off to bed.

you finished up your shower and headed to warrens room. “hey, i feel like i haven’t talked to you all day.” warren watched you walk to the bed. “sorry, just… thinking.” you nodded as you wrapped up under the covers.

“what about, my love?” he turned to you, propping his head up. “do you ever… in the future, maybe… want a baby?” you looked over to him. “of course i do. i’ve gotta carry this drumming legacy on somehow!” he joked. you scoffed as you rolled your eyes. “alright ringo. camila had asked me when i came to the studio.”

“oh yeah?” he grabbed your hand and placed a soft kiss on your knuckles. you hummed as you nodded your head. “i just want to be ready for him or her. i want to be a good mother.” your eyes stayed on his hand.

“and you will be. right now, we’re gonna be young and in love. we can worry about that later alright? don’t stress yourself out.” he muttered before placing one last kiss on your forehead and a lingering hand rubbing your cheek.

“i feel like i’ve done this mothering thing right. i mean, i’ve done it three times.”

What Kind of Story Can You Do?

Anything. No, wait. I'm afraid you don't believe me. I mean... ANY T H I N G. You want hardcore smut that boarders on problematic? I'm in. You want the fluffiest fluff that ever fluffed and would make Hallmark movies cringe? I got you. Angst? Dark stuff? General? Literally Anything you want. I only have one or two things I'm not comfortable with but that can all be discussed in private, and honestly, after almost 8 years doing this, no one's ever come close to asking for them so you're 1000% good to ask for whatever.

What's the bottom line here?

Well, your story, which will be anywhere from 1,000 - 20,000 words depending on how wordy I get, will be a flat rate of $20. This includes my full attention to your story from start to finish, accompanying art, specific detail inclusion, and an emailed PDF file that you can print out or delete, or whatever you want. It's yours.

I do not write for word counts, only the story. If your complete story can be told in 1k words, that's great. If it takes another 40,000 and we end up with a novel, that's great for you and I won't charge you any more for it! I'm more worried about giving you the best story I can than worrying about word counts.

Commissions are open now until Christmas Eve Eve (Dec 23, 2023).

i read a lot of books in january so i figure that i'd give y'all a quick rundown on what i loved, what was terrible (affectionate), and what was also terrible (derogatory).

top reads:

Daisy Jones and the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid okay, why did no one tell me how good this book was? i knew the show was about music but wasn't super into giving it a watch. i was not expecting the format at all but boy did it set up a compelling story. billy and daisy truly were the bitch4bitch relationship everyone needs. 5 stars

Locklands by Robert Jackson Bennet this is the final installment in the founder trilogy and what. an. ending. the first, Foundryside, was a solid start with a weird plot point at the end but and it picked up in Shorefall with more lore (that i loved) but really blossomed into something amazing in Locklands. the POV changed, the villain evolved, the lore - i love a good magic system, truly i do, and it just came together for me. came for the sapphic romance (of which there is not much in Foundryside) and stayed for the story. would recommend to my cousin. 5 stars

terrible (affectionate):

Yearning by Gun Brooke this was just... okay, so. aliens. aliens and a femme-butch cop (you know the type) and a high-femme librarian (you also know this kind) whose clinical exterior is broken down by the sudden realization that she can be queer because she's actually living in a town filled with descendants of aliens. it was quick and easy and i just kept going, "aliens. fucking aliens." 3 stars (no alien-makeout scene)

terrible (derogatory):

Wild and Wicked Things by Francesca May i tried to like this one. i really did. Great Gatsby meets Practical Magic isn't my cup of tea but my cousin recommended it and she reads for a living so i said sure. that cousin is uninvited from christmas next year. the pacing was so off and the two main characters were either "edgy" or a wet mop. their romance was terrible (edgy-witch too edgy to be in love) and felt forced. the story either zipped through major plot points that needed work or just. dragged. on. almost did not finish but it would have haunted me not to 1.5 stars

honorable mention:

i read Nevernight by Jay Kristoff again. it's a classic. mia and ash, my favorite murder children. i will read godsgrave posthaste 10 stars

plans for february:

Faebound by Saara El-Arifi i'm reading this one now and i like the premise so far. Samantha Shannon gave it a stamp of approval, hence my willingness to give it a shot. guess we'll see!

Roots of Chaos series by Samantha Shannon a friend just reread A Day of Fallen Night and it's got me longing for 800 page books all over again. might have to just give in

i am currently eagerly awaiting to be free to play A's route, I'm so ready for the slowburn. 😩

i love all the ros, but there's something about emotionally constipated ROs that hit different for me, they're just such babygirl material (gn). 🤌

if you are looking for more emotionally constipated ros, i recently played the demo for an if called precious: eyes of shan by @precious-if and you might like the ro insu. i normally don't really like friends to lovers trope, but when i tell you that another ro called hansol had me on a chokehold throughout the demo, the tension between him and the mc was chefs kiss. and i highly recomend it if you like historical fantasy.

i also forgot to ask if you had any manga/anime faves. sorry for cluttering your inbox with another ask lol, i just have the brain of a peanut.

every book i read in september 2023

i did in fact bring this back because i thought it would be fun and all my followers should know that before everything, i am a book nerd. i genuinely think i only feel like i'm alive when i'm reading regularly. no spoilers for any of the books i talk about because i can only have one cut per post

before i get into the books here's some general info on reading stuff this month. so i read 9 books which i'm really proud of myself for after being in a reading slump for ages. i was still reading then but i really was not enjoying myself nearly as much as i was in previous months and i'm really enjoying myself now. 5 of the books i read were physical copies of them, 1 was an ebook, and 3 were audiobooks. my average rating was 4.29/5 and read a total of 13.78 hours on audiobook and 2476 of pages shout out to storygraph for all this info i am telling you use storygraph if you want to track your reading its so great

the cruel prince. i really liked this surprisingly??? the worldbuilding was great and i loved all the political aspects of it. jude was a really interesting main character and i had a lot of fun with the story (especially the plot twist/s, no i'm not saying if there's more than one). i liveblogged a couple parts of the entire series this month so you can check my tfota tag for more in depth thoughts

the lost sisters. it was pretty interesting to see the plot of the cruel prince from the perspective of a different character but i didn't think much about my enjoyment of it since i was just reading it for more info on the series lol

captain stone's revenge. so i went on a nancy drew diaries binge once and i've been keeping up with the series ever since then just because, and i had a hold on this book for like 2 months at the library and i finished it in a day lol. it's a short book and definitely not as good as other books in the series but yk it wasn't awful still had fun reading

we are okay. this is one of my favorite books and i cried for 40 minutes straight as i finished the last like 50-80 pages. it's a really great exploration of different kinds of grief that are complicated and how it affects people. i posted while reading it "every chapter there's something that makes me take psychic damage" which was very fun but also deeply painful (in a fun way most of the time, sometimes i was in public trying not to cry). the ending is so hopeful it made me cry for a different reason why i was crying for the past 35ish minutes. it's a great book i highly recommend it it's only like 230 pages.

the wicked king. sequel to the cruel prince, i also really enjoyed this but i don't think i enjoyed it as much as the cruel prince. still well written though and i have more in depth thoughts under my tfota and/or reading commentary tags

queen of nothing. 100% my favorite from the trilogy i loved it i thought the characters and plot in this one were all super great and i loved the ending especially. i do have more detailed thoughts that i wrote down for me personally but this is a no spoilers section so i won't share it unless someone asks

cress. this is the 3rd book in the lunar chronicles series and aaaaaaa i loved this so much i had so much fun reading it i love the alternating povs and how they all end up clashing with the dramatic irony in that one scene i loved kai's povs i wanted to keep reading constantly i love these characters so much go read the lunar chronicles please

chalice of the gods. uhhh so i finished this in less than 12 hours i liveblogged it all i really enjoyed it you can see my thoughts there go check it out (cotg or reading commentary tag). a lot of cringe moments (WHY does he mention boomers so much) but i am choosing not to see it i only see percabeth and percy grover friendship content again and i enjoyed reading it

daisy jones and the six. i listened to this on audiobook and it was incredibleeeeeeee the voice actors were amazing it was so entertaining. another taylor jenkins reid book about the drama between famous people and it was very entertaining to read about. stressful at times but overall i liked it. once again there are some notes in the reading commentary tag

i also started winter this month but i am definitely finishing it in october so i don't count it lol

all the beauty and the bloodshed: nan goldin 4eva, obviously i cried when david wojnarowicz turned up

rye lane: beautiful brightly coloured jewel of a romcom! feels like a musical without being a musical somehow, you should see it!!

saint omer: powerful and told with such restraint and empathy

god's creatures: emily watson paul mescal very good! honestly what's stayed with me is the sound design and this version of the wild rover which fucking goes so hard

diarmaid maccullouch, thomas cromwell: a life: finally finished this and it just made me want to plunge back into a wolf hall reread

rob delaney, a heart that works: strongly recommend listening to rob delaney tell this story about his son and love and loss and care, my heart

eleanor catton, birnam wood: i feel weirdly invested in catton ever since i wrote part of my MA thesis about her MA thesis (the rehearsal fucks!!), this was a fun and zippy, like, eco-thriller about how billionaires are the worst

carmen maria machado, in the dream house: a memoir: the structure of this is dizzyingly good, it's rough going but worth it

dorothy dunnett, the ringed castle: lymond 5/6!! had to take like a three month break in the middle of this because work was taking it out of me and i felt simply too stupid and tired to go on but ohhh my god. i'm at a place with these books now where i Know it's useless to try and like anticipate the twists and the turns bc dorothy is infinity times more clever than i am, but they pack such an emotional punch and the writing is!! wildly good!!! most evocative descriptions, so funny, bananas POV stuff... she can do it all

maggie millner, couplets: i had a false start with this at first because it was like, oh, it's like Couplets couplets, but when i picked it up again i tore through it and highlighted so many lines. more poems about fingering honestly!!

so i read daisy jones & the six when it first came out. and as a the daughter of a seventies baby, i was hooked. as a kid raised on fleetwood mac, zz top, the rolling stones, eagles, tom petty and so many more, i was obsessed. i read the book everywhere while jamming out to my favorite seventies tracks. and when i finished the book i went, wow. that was fantastic, i felt like i was in the seventies. so good. and then they announced a show and i was super weary because, woah, book adaptations suck usually. i didn't watch the trailers, i didn't look up the cast and then the first three episodes dropped. i watched them and now i am on episode five and here's my hot take.

it's a good show, it's not a great show. they chose not to glamourize the things in the book that made it feel more seventies for me, but hey, maybe they will address it later. they took out the jumpsuits. i don't know why, this bothers me a whole bunch. can't explain it. the pacing is really slow, but in a good way, like, i enjoy it. the casting is fantastic, and you can really tell, just like book daisy, that show daisy is heavily stevie nicks coded, and it works well without being distracting. in fact, i notice it most in the present day shots. so congrats. the music was the most emotional part for me, because i know all the lyrics but have never had a beat for any of the songs. and that's, they did that well. also, the blackout scene in episode four i think. i love cam, i think cam is an angel who i wish i could protect. but cam. he hates her. and then you see them sing, and you are too good a person to see where this is going. it's in the lyrics of the first song baby. also i did in fact cry during oh la la.

anyway, it's no house of the dragon or the last of us or arcane or succession or yellowstone, i might not rewatch it ever, but it did make me want to read the book again. and that's the most important part of an adaptation for me. does it make you want more enough to read the book again? play the game again? also, do not dress like daisy, the line between seventies boho and christian boho is too thin. think first.

The End of Love, Florence and the Machine

Florence Welch is probably one of my favourite artists these days, and this song is my absolute favourite of hers since it was first released. It inspires me so much whilst writing, and I love the emotion that washes over you when you listen to it. Especially with my favourite lyrics; ‘I’ve always been in love with you / Could you tell it from the moment that I loved you?’

Look At Us Now (Honeycomb), Daisy Jones and the Six

I have been obsessed with the soundtrack of this album since the Amazon series dropped last month. The team did an abosolutely incredibly job in creating an album that feels like it charted in the 70′s (and feels very Fleetwood Mac), and after finishing the show myself I quickly had to order the vinyl record for this.

I knew Riley Keough would kill the vocals when it was announced she was cast, but I had no idea Sam Claflin would be so good too!

Tango in the Night, Fleetwood Mac

I have so much love for this band and oh my goodness, Tango in the Night is such a fantastic album which often gets overlooked for other albums like Rumors. But there are so many good songs in here, and Tango in the Night is one of my favourites. I used to own this on vinyl too, but I am cursed as every copy I have brought has been damaged in some way :( My mum treated me to the CD version a few years back for Christmas however, so it still gets played often.

This Hell, Rina Sawayama

Probably one of the more recent songs I listen to these days, but I fell in love with this song as soon as I heard it. Really powerful message and honestly? It’s just a bop. I mean, how can you go wrong with lyrics like; ‘The devil’s wearing Prada / And loves a little drama / This hell is better with you’.

Hunter’s Moon, Ghost

Ghost never fails to be awesome, and when I’ve loved this song since the day I watched Halloween Kills and went ‘hey wait a minute - that’s Ghost!’ when the credits played. The song fits so well with the film too and the story which is just, such a big plus in my book (also yes cinema, can we return to the days of having great soundtracks for movies? Because I am liking the returning trend). Another recent vinyl purchase too, as I realised I had no Ghost records and had to rectify that immediately during a record sale.

You had never been a fan of the tabloids—the endless gossip and chatter about who slept with who and how much weight so and so had gained. Half of the time, it wasn’t true. And the other half was just plain hurtful. These celebrities had a lives, too—star studded lives filled with private jets and millions of dollars to waste—but lives nonetheless. They deserved privacy, and selfishly, you deserved to be able to go somewhere without seeing your ex-fiancé on the cover of said tabloids.

Waiting in line at Hazelwood Coffee, your sister, Leah, stepped in front of the magazine rack in a failed attempt to spare your feelings, “So, Y/N, you going to go with iced or hot today?”

Although you appreciated her attempt to protect you from the countless photos of Eddie getting handsy with girls on tour, it didn’t take long for your brother-in-law to audibly gasp at the magazine, “He did what?”

Leah glared back at him, rolling her eyes. They had started dating after you and Eddie split, so he hadn’t been around for the countless nights you spent crying into her arms on your mother’s couch. No, he had grown to love The Dunne Brothers, reminding everyone that he had, in fact, gone to hear them play at a bar in town center one night a few years back. Despite his knowledge of your past with him, nothing could cover up the shock on his face whenever he saw their faces on the front cover of The Scoop or whatever tacky magazine he stumbled across.

Despite your efforts to act like you didn’t care about where he was in his life, Leah saw right through you, reassuring you that it was okay to be hurt. You were supposed to be right there with him, backstage as he played in some of the greatest concert venues in the world. But you weren’t, because three years ago, Eddie Roundtree had left you at the alter.

3 Years Ago

It was a warm day in June, the perfect amount of clouds in the sky but not enough to block the sun from beaming down on you. Everything was perfect. You were getting married to the love of your life and, to you, nothing could possibly go wrong. But your idea of perfection would come to bite you in the ass when you heard a knock on the door.

Leah looked up from doing your makeup, “You stay here, I don’t want you messing up your hair or brows.”

You smiled up at her, staring at your reflection in the mirror. You had never felt more beautiful.

When you noticed how long Leah had been gone for, you tuned into the conversation she was having at the door, “Eddie, it’s bad luck to see the bride before the wedding.”

“I really need to see her, Leah. It’s important.”

“Eddie, don’t start this marriage off on the wrong foot. I’m telling you, it’s bad luck,” She groaned, “Can’t you just wait to screw her until after the ceremony?”

You whipped your head around, “Leah!”

She glanced back at you apologetically, “It’s Eddie. He wants to know if he can come in.”

“Right now? I’m not done getting ready, but he can take a seat while you finish.”

Eddie pushed the door open a bit more, “I need a minute with you—alone.”

Leah raised a brow, looking between the two of you, “Hear that? Alone. Can’t blame a girl for wondering, can you?”

“Out, Leah,” You said, shaking your head, unable to contain your amusement.

She stepped out of the room, letting her soon to be brother-in-law squeeze past her. He shut the door behind him, twisting the lock. It was at this moment that you realized he wasn’t in his suit yet. He was still wearing his bell bottoms and turtleneck.

You swiveled around in your seat, “You’re not dressed yet? The weddings in an hour, Eds.”

He nodded his head, sitting down on an ottoman across from you, trying to think of the words to say.

Watching him struggle in silence, you rose from your seat and moved to sit across his lap, “Everything alright?”

His heartbeat starting picking up as you ran your hands through his hair, undoing the tangles, “You know you can tell me anything right? Including why you aren’t dressed yet.”

You watched as he swallowed hard, pursing his lips, “I’m leaving today.”

Letting out a breathy, confused laugh, you tilt your head, pressing the back of your hand to his forehead to check him for a temperature, “I know, honey. That’s kind of how honeymoons work. Are you feeling alright?”

“We’re not going on a honeymoon.”

“What? Why? We’ve been planning it for months.”

Eddie took a deep breath, “Because we’re not getting married.”

You felt your heart break in an instant, confusion spreading across your face. Enveloping his head in your hands, you shook your head, “What are you talking about?”

He didn’t meet your eyes, instead he just bowed his head.

Sliding off his lap, you took a step back, crossing your arms. You went through a list of reasons as to why this was happening in your head, pacing the room before turning back to him, “You’re a fucking dick if you think this is funny. I love you, Eddie, but doing this on our wedding day is a sick joke.”

He winced before looking up at you, “I’m not laughing. It’s not a joke.”

Tears starting falling down your face and your chest heaved, your voice cracking as you asked the one question he didn’t want to answer, “Why?”

“Honey…”

You shook your head, “Don’t call me that. Don’t you fucking call me that. Is there someone else? Someone who you love enough to run away with on our wedding day?”

“Y/N, it’s not like that, I promise.”

Shaking your head, you narrowed your eyes, “Well you seem to make a lot of promises you can’t keep.”

“The band is moving out to LA, Y/N.”

“So? I’ll go with you.”

He shook his head, “I can’t ask you to do that. You have school.”

“I’ll graduate in two years, Eddie. I can just transfer to a school out there.”

“No, you worked hard to get where you are—and your family is here.”

You took a step towards him, “I can still see them on trips. It’s not like I’ll be gone forever. Besides, you have family here, too.”

“I just have Gran. It’s not like I’m leaving an entire family behind.”

“You’re leaving me behind.”

He bowed his head, “Y/N…”

“Well, it’s true.”

“I’m doing you a favor.”

“No, you’re taking the easy way out.”

A knock on the door stopped him from responding, but you hastily called out, “Hold on!”

“Don’t give up on me, Eddie—on us.”

“We’ll be living paycheck to paycheck, all crammed in a four bedroom apartment. I can’t support you like that.”

You sighed, “Then I’ll get a job, pull some weight. It’ll be enough to float us.”

“No, you have too much to focus on with college—I don’t want you to have to worry about making ends meet.”

That’s when you broke, desperate for him to change his mind, “Please, Eddie. If you change your mind and marry me right now, I’ll pretend none of this ever happened. I’ll forget about it—you’ll never hear a peep from me. I love you, baby. I’ll go anywhere with you—I’ll finish school out here and follow you out there when I’m done. Just please, please marry me.”

“I’ll always love you, Y/N. But if I can’t give you the life you deserve, I don’t deserve to be in your life.”

It was routine for him to kiss you whenever he left, whether he was going in another room or off to an audition. This time was no different, except that the kiss he pressed to your cheek meant goodbye instead of see you soon.

Watching him walk out the door, you stood unable to move.

Leah shuffled back in, eyeing him as he walked down the hallway before closing the door, “Did you two have fun in here?”

Seeing your sister come into view, you fell to your knees, sobs racking through your body. She rushed over to you, cradling you in her arms as she had done the day your parents had bought you home from the hospital. Petting your hair as you cried into her chest, she squeezed you tightly.

“Oh, honey, what happened?”

“The wedding,” You choked, “Is off.”

Leah winced, holding you tighter to her as you cried.

Eddie had left you to make it big—and that was enough for you to crumple. How could you ever love again?

Hi! I just finished Daisy Jones and the Six and was wondering what your thoughts were on the show since I know that you were watching it too. As a book reader I thought they did a fairly good job. My main critique was that I didn't like how they changed Daisy and Billy's goodbye in Chicago since I felt they made it more about Camila and less about Daisy and Billy themselves.

Yes, I read the book as well and it's one of my favorites. The audiobook is just like the best thing ever, I swear! It's a whole new experience!

As for the show. I loved this adaption! I have no complaints at all. Everything from the cast to the music was just top notch! Most of the changes they made worked out well in my opinion like giving Simone more of a storyline and that whole thing between Eddie and Camilla 👀

Idk, I liked the ending! I figured it would be something this dramatic cause its a tv show but like Daisy saying this is a love song before Honeycomb starts to play 😭😭 that's how it was originally written, a love song for Camilla 🥺 and Daisy reminded Billy of that (I'm Team Daisy and Team Camilla, I said it before that DJATS made me realize you can have more than one great love and it even inspired one of my storylines)

The crowd singing their song, and Daisy telling Billy to go had me bawling my eyes out! She told him to go find his light, and we got to agree that was Camilla. Him and Daisy, it wasn't their time...yet 😭😭 and now I want to cry just thinking about it again!

That entire scene of the band on stage playing their final song ever gave me chills. I can't believe my favorite fictional band broke up just last week 😥 and I'm still depressed about it ☹

8 TV Shows!

1. Buffy the Vampire Slayer - My username, my very first online fandom and the first one I wrote fanfic for. Also Spuffy is still huge influence on my ships and Spike was one of the first villain characters I realized I loved. LOL

2. LOST - This show changed my life in so many ways. I always say I found myself through this show and it’s fandom. It’s what made me realize I wanted to be a writer, made so many friendships I still have to this day.

3. The Young and the Restless - My last daytime soap opera still on TV. I grew up actually watching this, “Guiding Light”, “As the World Turns”, repeats of the original “Dark Shadows”, and “All My Children” and not only did both my parents both watch them but so did my grandmothers, and my great-grandmother. Thankfully I still have this one that is on almost every day of the year that these characters feel like family.

4. The Office/Parks & Recreation - I agree these two shows feel like they go together and still two of the best comedies in the history of TV.

5. Daisy Jones and the Six - This show just finished airing but it was amazing!!! :D Like the book I loved it tells the story of a fictional 70s rock band that’s based on so many of the 70s classic rock bands and singers out at the time. I’m a huge music fan, especially of both music biopics and fictional bands, and this was so well done with such good music.

6. Once Upon a Time - Another one of my favorites that I was hugely involved in the fandom for. Loved how they mixed fairy tales, classic novels, and Disney. Still one of the best examples of redeeming a villain and actually having him be the female hero’s main love interest and they got a happily ever after.

7. Cobra Kai - I grew up loving the “Karate Kid” movies and love this show!!! :D Redeemed Johnny Lawrence and made me loved him. One of the best examples of doing a continuation series too.

8. The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power - This is my current major fandom and I loved this show!!! :D Brought back my love for LOTR and Tolkien’s books. Changed how I felt about both Galadriel and Sauron as I fully can understand them and they do work together as a ship. Also love their version of Elrond and all their original characters and excited to see how it is in season 2.

the stolen heir : holly black ⭐⭐⭐⭐

it took me about a week to read this book and by that i mean i read half, wasn’t impressed, took a week and came back and finished it. like with the cruel prince, the beginning and middle of this book aren’t all that exciting in my opinion, but holly takes the cake as usual for her incredible endings. honestly at this point reading a holly black book is worth it just to see how she wraps it. but yeah, i think it was a good starting point for the duology, im positive the prisoner’s throne will be better, as was the case with tcp > twk. im happy to say towards the end i had really connected with oak and suren/wren, however i feel like despite how fun of a concept it is to put wren and jude in direct opposition its...hm, bad ? to clarify, i wish that i felt conflicted on who’s side i was rooting for. but even if wren was in the right, which...bridle aside she isnt, i would still be in jude’s corner simply because even with all the time spent with wren it’s not enough to...connect with her on the same level as i did with jude. and thats a heavy ask to be fair; jude is one of my favorite character’s in the ya/new adult genre. but i think a understandable worry with this duology is that the folk of the air series might overshadow this new story holly black is trying to tell. i can’t say definitively if it has or has not, but i think she’s done a better job of balancing the new characters and plots with reference to the old. it’ll really be a testament to how well she can keep both separate and important in the next book as she’s hinted that jude and cardan will have a bigger role (which makes sense, since we’re uhh going to war. uh oh).

the invisible life of addie la rue : v.e. schwab ⭐⭐⭐

i read 60% of this book probably over a year ago. maybe two. on a plane. this is a reoccurring problem. but i gotta say, schwab is the queen of concepts. she hasn’t had a single book concept that i wasn’t at least a little intrigued by. unfortunately, uhh, this doesn’t always translate to an interesting plot. the beginning of this book is good, it’s engaging (as far as i remember), bestie lost me when she introduced the most uninteresting man in the world: what’s-his-name. no actually, what was his name--hold on--henry ! his name is henry. he is boring. i understand his purpose in the story, but uhh, the most interesting thing about that man was...the deal he made with the devil i guess ? and that gets revealed so late in the game you have to wade through addie being infatuated with this Regular Guy (not that i blame her when he’s the only one that can remember her), but god, yeah that’s a pretty comprehensive reason for me putting this book down for so long. the ending though, see this is the important part, the ending was very good. i was happily surprised how open-ended it was. though the hopeless romantic that lives deep inside my chest and chews on my bones will continue to believe that the dark could learn to love, okay. i don’t think that should be held against me, either way addie wins. slay queen.

daisy jones & the six : taylor jenkins reid ⭐⭐⭐

very different book from the two other before this, lol. im pretty sure i picked up this book offhandedly the last time i went to b&n, i read the seven husbands of evelyn hugo last year and wasn’t...super impressed ? authors tend to hit me a lot harder with their debuts then second or third releases. for some reason. i really respect reid for her use of journalism styles to tell these fictional stories, how much historical research probably goes into making everything seem realistic. i do think--as a personal opinion--writing about music is a very challenging thing. it’s very difficult to properly convey how music sounds, or feels, without being able to hear the music itself. (i feel the same about dancing, but that’ll probably come up another day). but the story is as much about the music as it is about the complex interweaving relationship of the characters in and outside of the band. shout out to my girl, camilla, the best character in that book. i think the most impressive thing to me about the book, besides the stylistic choices (aka the interview aspect), is how the waves minor characters like camilla or teddy or simone make deeply effect every aspect of the story. very akin to real life, there’s so many people that can change the game for you--especially for character’s like daisy and billy who are so deep in substance abuse and addiction at certain points. overall, really great book, the very last page made me laugh out loud.

beach read : emily henry ⭐⭐⭐⭐

emily henry books feel like a guilty pleasure to me at this point. i started reading her books on my flight to new york last summer, which is coincidentally where i picked up a physical copy of beach read that slept in my suitcase for uhh...six months ? anyways i finally decided to read her after talking about emily henry and her books with a friend of mine. it was a very good decision on my part--this is my favorite of her books. i feel like i need to start with the things i dont like about this book, lol. my biggest pet peeve with contemporary romance is that every single one of these characters is an author, or a publisher, or does something in the literary industry. please stop. i get thats where a lot of these authors have experience, it is their field, but jesus christ can we just have like. an illiterate main character. someone with an undeniable hatred for everything book-related. let’s be quirky and different...please ? all that said, january and gus have some actually great conversations about writer’s block and how it feels to write outside of your comfort zone. i’ll say out of all the books ive read in recent years that have to do with writers (another of which being an emily henry book 🙄), this is the best its been done in my opinion. the relationship development in this book is just very gradual and i love that, the fact that they knew each other before, but not deeply enough to be friends so we still get to see them get to know each other beyond their work is really important to me. sidenote: completely understand what january means when she’s talking about the sad and depressing shit people write about in an undergrad creative writing program. good lord. the heavy topics in this book felt very well handled in the context of...yknow a romance novel, it was kind of nice to have a love interest that wasn’t like...secretly a huge asshole who���s hiding the worst secret in the world. they had me worried for a second there when the exwife showed up, but the swerve at the last second was very appreciated. this book would have a very different review if that had been handled differently. lemme tell you, lol. overall, very enjoyable, probably the most fun ive had in this genre since the hating game. wow.
