Thanks for the ask! I've always wanted to talk about the best boi. It took me couple days to think some of these out but I came up with a few that are really meaningful to me. I may have slipped into arkos territory at the end but that's not unusual for me in the slightest.

Ever since my first run-through of the series, I always wondered if he kept Pyrrha's recording from v4 on his scroll...and honestly I believe he does still have it even after upgrading scrolls in v7 (i'm not even trying to cope with v9 yet because, like, does he even have his scroll anymore?)

Touch is his love language, as well as keeping physical reminders/items as memories (as we see with pyrrha's sash)

Unless it's already been confirmed (I looked, couldn't find anything official) I see his birthday as being late march/early april (aries season baybee). This is entirely selfish because that's when my birthday is. But also bunny imagery makes me think spring/easter. Idk.

Other people can feel when he's using his semblance on them. It's not painful, more like a tingly feeling. But a good feeling nonetheless.

Even though he's great with kids and came from a large family, he isn't sure he wants his own (human children, anyway). He is, however, absolutely down with being the fun/cool uncle for Ren and Nora's kids (or if anyone on team rwby has kids)

Pyrrha shows up in his dreams sometimes. It happened more frequently right after the fall but has lessened over time. He believes that this is her visiting him/letting him know that she's ok. Sometimes these dreams are so real that he wakes up and the grief hits him as bad as it did right after her death. Usually, though, he takes comfort in these dreams.

Despite his size, he is shit at sports.

You can't convince me he didn't think of Pyrrha during the renora moment in v8. I know it was supposed to be funny because haha Jaune is finally able to read the room and leave but talk about really feeling like a third wheel, especially when your partner's been dead for almost 2 years.

Whenever he takes off the red sash, he handles it with care and sometimes holds it a little too long (not even gonna mention v9 here).

Similarly, when cleaning/polishing his weapons, especially his shield, he lingers on her headpiece and will touch/trace it softly, especially on days when he's really missing her.

So, I suppose these give a little bit of insight into how I characterize Jaune. Some of it is purely me projecting, but a lot of it I feel fits him realistically. Y'know, I've only been into rwby for 2 years but only now I'm feeling brave enough to make content. Hmm, wonder why that might be.

How specifically do Ren and Nora react when Jaune finishes his story of being the Rusted Knight?

His brother looks tired.

It’s the only thing Ren can think as he listens to Jaune and team RWBY explain what happened. The words are just washing over him, he’s listening but he’s not hearing. He can’t stop staring at his brother.

It was back in Beacon when they first called each other that, and Ren said it partially out of jest. Partially to get Jaune to leave so he could put a gods damned shirt on.

It wasn’t until he was standing next to a screaming-crying Nora and he could see the petals of his own grief swirling in the air where there once was a portal that he really realized what it meant to have a brother.

His brother looks tired.

He’s tall, and he’s confident, and he’s sure of himself, and he looks like a strong wind might bowl him over. There are white streaks in his hair, and his eyes hold an age that Ren has only seen in Oscar’s too-old eyes.

Jaune’s hands won’t stop shaking. Ren can see it, even though his brother is clearly trying to hide it. He keeps clearing his throat when he speaks, looking faintly surprised every time his own voice exits his mouth.

“-and then we were in Vacuo, and you guys found us,” Jaune finishes. His smile is the same as Ren remembers, blinding and sheepish in equal measure.

Ruby is talking about something, but Ren can’t stop staring at Jaune.

He’s never known Nora to be so quiet.

His brother is staring at him.

“Can I…” Jaune interrupts Ruby. “Can I just have some time with my team?” Ruby doesn’t even blink, just nods. The rest of her team follow her out of the room.

Then it’s just the three of them. In a silence so tense he could cut it with his father’s blade.

Jaune is just standing there. He reaches up to brush something out of his eyes, finds nothing there, and drops his hand back to his side. He doesn’t invite them to sit, he doesn’t even sit himself.

It’s like he’s forgotten how to be a person.

“I…” Jaune’s voice creaks into the silence, he trails of. He clears his throat, frowning. Tries his voice on again, like an old coat that hasn’t been worn in years. “I’m sorry I didn’t…” Shakes his head again. “I really missed you guys.”

Ren nods absently. Nora is stiff at his side, her hand as cold as the Solitas tundra in his grasp.

“Were you safe?” Ren asks.

Jaune shrugs, grinning sheepishly. “Mostly,” he concedes, and that’s probably as good as they’re going to get. Bright smile or not, Jaune seems more fragile now than even his spiral in Mistral.

“Were you happy?” And Nora’s hand tightens in his grasp.

Jaune’s eyes widen, and his hand twitches at his side. Ren wonders why he doesn’t grab his sash.

When his brother hesitates further, a shuttered look crossing his face, Ren blinks into gray scale.

Conflict, grief, confusion, joy, rage, sorrow, pain, pain, pain

“I was the Rusted Knight,” Jaune says, stiff as the armor of his title. “It didn’t matter if I was happy.” If I die buying them time it’s worth it, they’re the ones that matter.

“But were you happy??” Nora asks. Her voice is steady, calm, but her whole arm is shaking in Ren’s grip. Scars from lightning cracking across her shoulders, echoing white streaks in his brother’s hair.

Oh the way a person is marked by thinking they’re only worth what they can do for others.

Was he happier? Did he wish he was still there? Did he not want to come back? He was the hero he always wanted to be, a literal beacon of valor and bravery. He was making a difference.

Ren always preferred the Cat, personally, (and how that stings now) but the Rusted Knight was adored. In the books scrounged from drop-offs, and the storytime sessions in libraries, every kid cheered and wept for the brave and cheerful knight. You couldn’t find a better storybook role model than him.

How cruel that his brother had to crumble to dust for the character to exist.

“I was alone,” Jaune creaks eventually, voice as rusty as his armor, as if that’s enough of an answer.

And from anyone else it wouldn’t be. But from his brother, who lives and dies for the people he cares about, no sentence could be more telling.

Mirror Man AU: Does Team RWBY try to convince the Rusted Knight he is Jaune Arc before he comes to that conclusion himself? How does that go? How does he react?

Of course they try. Their friend’s mental faculties have fractured as a result of extreme stress, solitude, and trauma. Of course they try

As for how it goes… well the Knight reacts about how you’d expect: With increasing anger the more they insist that he’s Jaune

At first he feels sorry for them. Jaune Arcwas a monster of a person who tricked these people into loving him, but the Knight only blames Jaune Arcfor his deception not RWBY for having caring hearts. So he politely corrects them and moves the subject along

They’re in mourning, their friend is dead, and although the Knight knows they’re better off without that monster, he lets them grieve how they need. Even if it means comparing him to Jaune Arc

The more it goes on, though, the more irritated and eventually angry he gets. Jaune Arc is dead. It’s idiotic for them to say that the Knight is him. Jaune Arc was a monster, a liar, a failure. The Knight is none of those things, and it’s insulting that they keep insisting he is

He’s the Rusted Knight. A hero, a paragon of virtue and glory. He saves people and slays monsters, in fact the first monster he slew was that heartless murderer Jaune Arc

It all comes to a head after the Paper Pleasers ascend

Because Jaune Arc didn’t kill the Paper Pleasers

For the twins au, assuming Jaune and Raven have the chance to hold an extended conversation, how would it go?

Depends when in the timeline it would happen

Jaune is much more ambivalent towards Raven than Yang is, mostly because he only relatively recently even learned who she was. So he hasn’t had that growing resentment the way his twin has. Mostly he hates her because of how Raven abandoned Yang, not how she abandoned him

That being said, it would be very tense. Jaune is fiercely loyal, and has been known to overlook slights against himself in favor of slights against people he cares about. So I could definitely see him railing against Raven for abandoning Yang

If it’s post-Ever After though, he’d probably be more open to talking to her. Not for healthy reasons, of course, but this IS Jaune we’re talking about

Because of what he was forced to do in killing Penny, during his spiral in the Ever After he becomes convinced that he’s no better than Raven. If Yang is their mother’s conviction, then he is their mother’s “ends justify the means” nature

So it’s unhealthy as hell, and she’d be the one to approach him. Because honestly talking to Raven is so low on his priority list right now (especially because he doesn’t want his own flaws to be reflected back at him)

How does the Rusted Knight come to accept that he is, in fact, Jaune Arc?

Tragically, it’s not until after the Pleasers ascend/Ruby drinks the tea that the wall comes crumbling down

The Pleasers’ deaths damage the barrier, when he’s shouting at Ruby he occasionally stops referring to himself in the third person. It’s when Ruby drinks the tea that he finally breaks down

Because now he’s failed to protect people as “Jaune Arc” AND as “The Rusted Knight”. He’s no better than Jaune Arc, he’s a killer one way or another

The fragile wall he’s built separating himself from the horrible thing he had to do comes crashing down. And with it… down comes the barrier between Jaune Arc and the Rusted Knight

And he finally FINALLY breaks

Except that the Rusted Knight believes this about Jaune Arc in a very literal sense.

If you think you’re bad at video games

I’ve had to restart my entire Fallout 1 game twice now.

No like… I’m LEGIT bad at games. This isn’t just me saying that because I’m humble or whatever, I’m legit bad

I can’t walk in games. Like at all

That’s why I only play low stakes games like Minecraft or Slime Rancher. Cause being bad at walking in those games doesn’t get you killed forever

And even then, I die about a million times at the start of every Minecraft world cause I get backed into a corner and can’t get myself out cause I’m THAT BAD AT WALKING

Does the Rusted Knight remove his helmet in front of RWBY? How long does it take them to realize he is Jaune Arc?

Yeah he takes his helmet off in front of them, and it doesn’t take them very long to realize at all

The ending of that episode goes almost exactly the same “Team RWBY, you finally made it” RWBY realize that he’s Jaune almost immediately, and tell him as much

Not that RK takes very well to being compared to that monster
