#SinfoniaToronto #practicechallenge continues... #Repost @marylovesclassical • • • • • • Day 2 of working on Wieniawski’s Scherzo Tarentelle. Usually I will record an excerpt of a piece multiple times and chose the one I like most to post. This time, I’m posting the first recording I made so I can identify any problems in my playing and fix them for the next time. My teacher isn’t the biggest fan of slow practice. She encourages me to practice the piece at its normal tempo. That way, I’ll be able to identify any problems and fix them right away. After watching the video, I can already say that my shifts in section B are very lazy. I was not engaging my whole arm. If I were to have practiced that slowly, I probably wouldn’t have noticed that. I also noticed some intonation issues at the beginning. Each triplet can be played as double stops so I’m first going to play them like that so I have the right hand frame and know where my fingers need to be. When I feel I’m ready, then I will play it how the piece calls for it to be played. I’ll probably post how I practice it on my stories later tonight. Also my upbow spiccato notes are not as powerful as the downbow so I’m going to spend some time on that. I often #practicescales and #arpeggios #startingfromthetop This allows me to be more alert to my hand and arm position in the upper register. Also, since I’m changing to the next #arpeggio at the top, my mind is most alert at the most challenging part of each arpeggio. Additionally, changing from one arpeggio to the next makes it clear how the upper position hand shape changes from one to he next. For additionally reinforcement, I announce these changes out loud as shown. Carl Flesch Scale System. I've had this book since I was 14. At the beginning of January, I decided to seriously start practicing through the whole book, doing all the scale exercises. Today I made it to the end, having practiced all minor and all major scales, including 3rds, 6ths, octaves, fingered octaves, 10ths (hahaha as if I can reach that in tune), and harmonics. Adding the double stop into daily scale practice was incredibly difficult for me, and for the first couple of weeks, my left hand was sore, all the time. I made it to the end of the book (not counting Max Rostal 'Supplenent' at the end), and tonight, I'm going to return to the very beginning of the book, and make the journey all over again. Flesch recommends that 'the key must be changed everyday.' Only in the last few weeks, I have been following his instruction. I hope that this type of practice and exercise for my fingers, will pay off in my repertoire, such as the octave passages in Sibelius Violin Concerto. #carlflesch #violin #practiceroom #fingeredoctaves
