Carlos Ezquerra, gone four years now. I've loved his work all my life, and having him draw one of my Judge Dredd strips was a career highlight! Rest in peace, Carlos -- you magnificently drew the future, and graciously carried us with you!

Fantastic retro TV ad from 1977 for British newsstand stalwart “2000 AD”, celebrating the release of issue 1 and its hard-to-find free SPACE SPINNER. Never has a piece of plastic been seared into the minds of a generation so permanently. The ad’s presenter is long-serving alien editor THARG.
"2000 AD" is a British weekly science fiction comic magazine that debuted in 1977, created by writer and editor Pat Mills. Known for its gritty, satirical, and often anarchic style, the magazine quickly set itself apart from other comics of the time. Early issues featured a mix of science fiction stories, including "Flesh," "Invasion," and "Harlem Heroes." The publication became a launchpad for many notable creators, such as Alan Moore, who wrote "The Ballad of Halo Jones," and Grant Morrison, who created "Zenith." Other influential contributors included Garth Ennis and Dave Gibbons, each adding to the magazine's diverse and innovative storytelling.
Judge Dredd made his debut in the second issue of "2000 AD" on 5 March 1977, and swiftly became its flagship character. Created by writer John Wagner and artist Carlos Ezquerra, Judge Dredd is a law enforcement officer in the dystopian future city of Mega-City One, known for his strict adherence to the law. Alongside Dredd, other notable characters like Johnny Alpha from "Strontium Dog," Rogue Trooper, Slaine, and Nemesis the Warlock helped define the magazine's unique blend of dark humour, social commentary, and imaginative storytelling. "2000 AD" has maintained its status as a cornerstone of British pop culture, continuing to publish weekly and influencing generations of comic creators and fans.

Art I love.... Mick McMahon's first ever drawn epsiode of JUDGE DREDD was actually published in Prog 6 ( Judge Dredd started in Prog 2 ). The editors decided to publish later drawn episodes first ( as the stories were all one offs ) to better establish who the character was. • • • You'll notice Dredd has a badge just saying 'Judge' ( not Dredd ) as Carlos Ezquerra first drew all the Judges with a generic bage of office. Mick was given cooies of Carlos's work to base his on. It was later decided to give them name badges to make them easier to differentiate. • • • The story was also heavily censored as this was being put together pre-launch and at the same time as IPC Publishers were having trouble with Action weekly and had been criticised in the media for overly violent content. • • • This page contains the first ever printed image of Judge Dredd astride his lawmaster bike, whick was orinted as an advert in 2000ad Prog 1 and in other IPC comics to generate interest in the new title! Thrill power overload! • • • #originalart #comicshistory #2000ad #mickmcmahon #carlosezquerra #JudgeDredd #comics #comicbooks https://www.instagram.com/p/B2uN7ynBFi854PXp_Y7czjzLPpCZCAq_gK-fEQ0/?igshid=1qd66uasjsfcv

Carlos Ezquerra was a truly unique talent and I miss seeing his work in the pages of @2000adcomic. While this book features a couple stories each for Strontium Dog and Judge Dredd, it focuses mainly on work that hasn’t been collected elsewhere, including some early girls’ comics stories. We get a couple of Ray Pack takes, but also a lot of self contained war stories. While he may be best known for his 2000 AD and Battle stories, so much of those series have been reprinted elsewhere that this could have been an overly familiar collection. Fortunately, the editors seem to understand this, and even with the more popular characters, they’ve chosen stories from annuals. Not only are those less frequently seen, but they also showcase Ezquerra’s amazing color work. With crisp, clear reproduction, this book really showcases how fantastic Ezquerra was for his entire career. #thismakesmehappy #books #2022reading #bookstagram #comics #graphicnovel #britishcomcs #artofcarlosezquerra #judgedredd #strontiumdog #ratpack #carlosezquerra https://www.instagram.com/p/ChUtOB6L5Qb/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
