I adore Big Bird
Making friends with people from other countries is so crazy. I sent my group chat a Big Bird gif.
And this one girl says, “why isn’t he blue?”
I’m like, the fuck you mean??
So today I learned that in the Dutch version of Sesame Street, they do, in fact, have a blue Big Bird.

I was baffled by this so I went on Muppets Wiki and guess what.
In Mexico, Big Bird is green and his name is Abelardo.

Turkish Big Bird (aka Minik Kus) is apparently fucking orange.

This looks like a fuckin alternate universe or smth. I can’t.

Hi There, Boys and Girls! America's Local Children's TV Programs (Book, Tim Hollis, 2001)
You can digitally borrow it here.
(Video search tip: when searching for any of the shows it mentions, if the show's title isn't enough, try adding the city and/or state.)
Above: Jim and Jane Henson and a drawing by Carroll Spinney (Big Bird, Oscar the Grouch) of his short-lived local TV puppet character.

🧊 🍀 for oc ask!
🧊: No, actually, Creator's design has come a long way from his og design!
🍀: He's inspired by a handful of people, mainly Aaron Fechter (The creator of the Rock-a-Fire Explosion) and one of my friend's OCs. He's partially inspired by Carroll Spinney but not too much.

Big Bird almost died in the Challenger disaster.
Alice: . . .I beg your pardon, what???
Victor: [baffled, searching on his phone] That has to be a -- it's not.
Alice: I need an explanation. Please.
Victor: Simply put, NASA invited Big Bird onto the Challenger, as a way to help teach kids about space, but the plan was never approved -- the puppeteer, Carroll Spinney, was sure that it was because the costume was simply too big. Which, uh, ended up saving his life.
Alice: That is -- wow.
Victor: [nods] Yeah.
#~M: I want some questions! now! (ask)#~M: grin without a cat (anon)#tw: death mention#~V: Cuddlepile#~T: Girls Love Girls And Boys#big bird and challenger#~C: Victor Van Dort#~C: Alice Liddell#((sentences I did NOT expect to read today#like holy shit#I am so glad that the costume was too big and they never went any further with the plan#yikes :( ))#~M: with this hand I will lift your queue

I Am Big Bird it’s about the creator and original puppeteer of Big Bird Carroll Spinney he was performing Big Bird well into his 80s! And he just seemed like such a sweet man I loved hearing about how he fell in love with his wife Debbie
That sounds lovely! I'll keep my eye out for it :)

In case you're curious, the current performer for Elmo is a guy from Philly named Matt Dillon, which is cool. Not as cool as the fact that Matt Vogel, who plays Big Bird, his last name, loosely translates to bird in German. Matt Vogel actually apprenticed under Carroll Spinney, who originated the role who passed away a few years ago. Matt Vogel also is the voice of Kermit the frog which is a bit unpopular in the fandom but in my opinion, Steve Whitmire got fired for good reason he didn't wanna work with new performers and if the Muppets are going to continue to go on you need to start bringing in fresh blood as a lot of the original performers no longer perform or even passed away at this point.
cool!

Street Gang: How We Got to Sesame Street (2021) is a documentary about the beginning and early years of the children's television show Sesame Street. It roughly follows the show from its start in 1969, through some highlights, and ends with Jim Henson's death in 1990.
Sesame Street revolutionized television with the belief that a show for kids could be both educational and fun without sacrificing either value. The intent was to enrich children's lives without talking down to them, and to do it using as much creativity as possible. This is the beauty of this documentary, the merging of artists and educators to create something amazing.
The history of Sesame Street is long and ongoing (the show is still on the air). Some of the stories in this film don't feel like they get the time they deserve, but one hopes that they just make more documentaries about Sesame Street. Modern-day interviews with the show's creators are accompanied by archival clips and behind-the-scenes footage.
This film made me cry twice at how thoughtful and loving my favorite children's show was to me when I grew up. If nothing else, watch it for the Muppet bloopers.
