chriscolfer: Happy Struck By Lightning Day!⚡️ Ten years ago, I wrote, produced, and starred in a little indie movie called “Struck By Lightning.” It was directed by the amazing Brian Dannelly and had an incredible cast and crew, including Allison Janney, Rebel Wilson, Christina Hendricks, Dermot Mulroney, Robbie Amell, Angela Kinsey, Sarah Hyland, Carter Jenkins, Roberto Aguire and my dear friend, the late Polly Bergen. (You should have seen me dancing around the production office when the cast was confirmed - I hope there isn’t video.) Making a movie about a teenager driven by ambition, instead of sex and popularity, was an enormous challenge. Also, a project starring a young openly gay actor was nearly impossible to sell back then. But it happened! More than a decade later, I still get stopped on the street by strangers who tell me how much the movie helped them while growing up. The letters, the tweets, the fan art, and the overall support the film has received since 2013 – not to mention the heated arguments many of you got into with critics - is the greatest gift a writer could get. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, and remember, always wear rubber-soled shoes during a storm. I'll play! :) What was your very first fandom?

Ooh, this is fun. Great question.

I always rooted for the unexpected couple like Chloe + Clark, Chandler + Monica, Carter + Lucy, Carrie + Aiden, Sidney + Will, Joey + Pacey, etc.

But I really wasn’t an active “fandom” participant until ARROW.

I started watching ARROW during the second season in the spring of 2013. I had just been let go from a job I hated (no loss) and had all this free time. I had been scanning Twitter and a tweet popped up by jbuffyangel where she gave an in depth analysis of the latest episode of ARROW - like hard core analysis - down to the lighting and script- with a link to her blog here on tumblr.

I was intrigued. As I have mentioned before, my mom was an English scholar and she edited all my book reports and she always wanted me to “read below the surface” and to “find meaning beyond the obvious metaphors.” I always did very well when I could find a nugget and build a whole argument around it pleading my case with other aspects of the story as supporting evidence. Up until that point, I had never considered turning that critical eye towards a tv show. Jen had taken the teachings of my mom, and applied them to a tv show, with a built in mythology and this thing called “canon.”

I thought ARROW was such a random choice - why do I care about a second tier super hero on a second rate network (CW had just rebranded itself)? And her analysis was breathtaking. I had never seen an episode when I read her critique and I fell in love with Oliver and Tommy and Diggle and Felicity… and I now had a critical filter through which watch the show.

I love movies and tv shows - the idea of dropping out of my current state of existence and “being Andrea” and stepping into a whole new world, letting go of my deeply-rooted in science belief system and just getting sucked in to these new characters and their experiences was and still is like real world magic to me. I don’t care about the lighting or the staging, I just want a story to make me feel something.

I binged ARROW on Netflix and then watched it religiously through the remaining seasons. I was and still am an Olicity super fan. I donated money so an Olicity bench could be put up in a park in Vancouver. I watched every Facebook live with Stephen Amell learning about him and Oliver and the show in general.

I was part of the Olicity army that supported the show through all the show renewals, through the spin-offs, through the building of this whole universe of DC SUPERHeores- which is still a core part of the CW line up almost 10 years later.

The one area I never participated in was writing fan fiction. Oh I read a lot of it (gimme all the Bratva Felicity/Oliver stories please). But Chenford and the Rookie is what triggered in me a desire to actually write about episodes, and answer questions (like this one) and write stories about characters I see in my head. I am so grateful for that.

Cine: Struck By Lightning (2012)

“Struck by Lightning” tiene un comienzo sorpresivo: Carson Philips (Colfer) es el narrador de la historia... a pesar de haber sido fulminado por un rayo. Así, desde el Más Allá, da un vistazo a sus últimos momentos de vida. Cómo fue adquiriendo un tono sarcástico frente al mundo, merced principalmente a la separación de sus padres, mientras persigue su sueño de ser editor de medios como “The New Yorker”. Su obstáculo: es presidente de un club de escritores en el que abunda la apatía del resto de sus miembros. Su vida es tan poco estimulante como el resto del poblado de Clover: convive con su madre alcohólica y depresiva Sheryl (Alison Janney), su abuela (Polly Bergen) apenas sí lo reconoce debido al Alzheimer que padece y su padre (Dermot Mulroney) está a punto de casarse con la farmacéutica April (Christina Hendricks). 

Para lograr la admisión en la Universidad a que quiere asistir, Carson funda una revista literaria escolar, buscando sorprender positivamente a sus autoridades. Como no hay quien se apunte a la idea, la única opción que se le ocurre es... chantajear a varios compañeros.

El divertido filme, dirigido por Brian Dannelly, no especifica la sexualidad del protagonista; dado que fue escrito por Colfer no es errado esbozar que haya querido imprimirle algo personal. Por caso, sí hay una sorpresiva pareja homosexual: la conformada por el gay de closet Nicholas Forbes (Carter Jenkins) y el presidente del club de Drama, Scott Thomas (Graham Rogers). Ambos caen víctimas de la extorsión de Carson, a la que también ceden la porrista Claire Mathews (Sarah Hyland), la gótica Vicki Jordan (Ashley Richards), el capitán del equipo de fútbol americano Justin Walker (Robbie Amell), el falso estudiante de intercambio Emilio Lopez (Roberto Aguirre) o el fumón Dwayne Michaels (Matt Prokov). También hay que añadir a la lista a Malerie Baggs (Rebel Wilson), su mejor amiga y siempre en estado de bloqueo de escritor.
