I know I'll write more spn fanfic after/besides Schrödinger's wip, because there's so much I can't touch on in the context of that story, so many characters I can't develop. Also Cas being head over heels madly in love with Dean Winchester forever and ugh that's right there's his brother, he's okay if annoying, I guess? is a very funny reluctant in-laws dynamic, but I can't possibly fit it in a context as tragic as WWI where Sam is a conscientious objector and Cas an officer who tries his best to spare him out of love for Dean. I can't see a way to use it without making it ridiculous. But someday!

sam and cas are so... they're like brothers-in-law that are always slightly awkward bc their relationship only exists bc of a different person. and the first few seasons getting to know each other they keep getting pissed off if they exchange more than a few words ("he's an abomination", "i'll hunt you down and kill you", etc) but there's still somehow an inherent admiration there (bc that's Dean's Brother/that's An Angel). and eventually they do become some sort of actual friends. bc along with everything else. they realized that they can be bitchy to each other without toning it down and enable each other's most insane ideas.

compared to sam+dean and cas+dean's relationships, sam+cas are remarkably unaffected by everything that happens. they might have seasons long fights or plots with dean, but with each other they're always just kinda chill. like, yeah, course he's always gonna be there. we're friends and i don't actually like him that much but he is my 2nd closest family member in the world. he can be super annoying but i'd die for him in a heartbeat :)

If Benny came back as planned with Sam and Bobby, Sam would have befriended him. At first because he helped him but then… then he'd have noticed how Cas hardly stand him and Benny would have been his weapon anti-Cas. Whenever Cas insults him just because he's here (I find the sound of your voice grating, Sam of course is an abomination, you're damaged in ways even I can't heal, etc etc), Sam would compare him to Benny. Benny would get along because he thinks annoying Cas is funny.

And Dean would be exhausted. It'd be even worse than when they were stuck in Purgatory.
