A great hush came over the student body of Hogwarts: School of Witchcraft and Wizardry when the great Headmaster Dumbledore raised his hands over his large golden podium and became to speak with a booming voice. “Now that we're all settled in and sorted, I'd like to make an announcement.”
The students - minus the First Years - all glanced at each other. With how the school years have been with the arrival of The Boy Who Lived, who knows what warning, rules, and regulations the Headmaster was going to say.
The Weasley unashamedly stared at Harry with knowing eyes and smirks.
Harry ignored their eyes.
“This castle will not only be your home this year, but home to some very special guests as well. You see Hogwarts has been chosen to host a legendary event: The Triwizard tournament!”
Murmurs and excited whispers bounced off the stone walls of the Great Hall at the news. “Now for those of you who do not know, the Triwizard tournament brings together three schools for a series of magical contests, but for the first time ever the Ministry of Magic has granted acceptance for a fourth school to be entered!”
More excited chatter erupted across the four houses.
“What school could it be?”
“There’s only five other schools outside of the European continent.”
“Maybe the school in Japan?”
“I hope it’s Castelobruxo! I love Brazilian food!”
Dumbledore hushed the students again.
“From each school a single contestant is selected to compete. Now let me be clear, if chosen you stand alone, and trust me when I say these contests are not for the faint hearted, but more of that later.”
The room turned ominous at his decree. But many continued to vibrate in excitement for the tournament.
In particular, a pale blonde boy in green robes puffed his chest out in pride. His cronies grinned at him.
“Let us begin introductions, shall we?” Dumbledore smiled widely as he waved his hands towards the large wooden doors of the Great Hall. “Please join me in welcoming the lovely ladies and gentlemen of the Beauxbatons Academy of Magic and their headmistress Madame Maxime!”
The large doors burst open as a group of girls in blue silk uniforms pranced in a triangular form. As they made their way down the center aisle they sighed dramatically and leaned to the sides of the lined dinner tables. To add to the show, the females released a swarm of blue butterflies as they made it halfway down the hall.
Some of the female students of Hogwarts watched the Beauxbatons girls with distaste and jealousy and elbowed the drooling boys sitting next to them.
“They’re all veelas! Of course they’re all staring at them like pieces of meat.” Angela Johnson of Gryffindor huffed. She made a face when the blonde girl leading the parade of butterflies and sighs smiled in a knowing way.
Other than the drooling attention the boys gave the girls, all attention went to the large woman that made her way down the aisle. She was large, and that word was not taken lightly! She was at least a good three feet taller than their half-giant gamekeeper, Hagrid.
“Blimey, that's one big woman.” A student whispered as they watched Madame Maxine walk by.
After the ladies finished their entrance, the male students of Beauxbatons school sauntered in. They mimicked the same ballet arms, hops, and sways as their female colleagues, but with less sighing.
This time it was the male student body of Hogwarts that had to elbow the females out of their stupors.
A pair of Ravenclaw girls fanned themselves and held onto each other for support.
A Slytherin girl actually fell off the bench when a handsome raven haired student winked at her.
“You were saying?” Lee Jordan of Gryffindor teased Angela after he elbowed her.
As the school’s last pizazz to their entrance was a young blonde girl in a pink and white leotard. She did an impressive show of acrobatics and a ribbon dance down the aisle, before ending in an impressive flip beside the same blonde that led the pack. They looked similar - Sisters, perhaps. The French school bowed in perfect synchrony after their performance - The Entire Hogwarts student body climbed to their feet in applause and whistled.
“Encore!” Someone yelled from the crowd.
Professor McGonagall shook her head in disappointment.
Dumbeldore greeted the giant Headmistress and showed her to her seat at the professor table. He turned back to his students. “And now our friends from the North, please greet the proud sons of Durmstrang and their high master Igor Karkaroff!”
These boys were the exact opposite of the Beauxbatons’ boys - they were large and rugged, with a more mountain man appearance rather than the delicate, pretty princely types of Beauxbatons.
They all wore red blood uniforms with variously colored fur coats, making them even more intimidating; All marched into the Hall with heavy wooden staffs that they banged and stabbed into the floor like war drums. Sparks erupted from the ends of their staffs, before the students turned and began a choreographed fight with their staffs.
“Blimey it’s him!” Ronald Weasley of Gryffindor swooned as he spotted his role model (and man crush). “Viktor Krum!”
The legendary Quidditch Seeker marched beside the Durmstrag headmaster, both wearing fierce, intimidating looks.
To finish their entrance, a boy blew fire to create a fire dragon to swirl around their High Master to further their intimidation tactics.
The two headmasters greeted each other with a pat on the back and a small smile, before they separated and Dumbledore went back to his podium. “And now for our final and our most special guest, our friends from across the pond, from Salem, Massachusetts: Quendrum Academy and their Headmistress Agatha Hallewell!” he gestured towards the doors again, but nothing happened.
Brows furrows and mutters of confusion erupted throughout the Great Hall. Some students rose to their feet to spy anything out of the ordinary.
Suddenly, the floating candles in the Great Hall dimmed slowly, almost becoming extinguished, and fog began to seep from the fireplaces.
Students of Ravenclaw and Slytherin Houses inched away from the fireplaces beside them. Gryffindor and Hufflepuff students stood instead to see the fireplaces.
Screams erupted when the fog sparked and large green flames erupted in the hearths.
Students and teachers feared the worst. Was someone Flooing in??
Cackles and jeers then erupted throughout the Great Hall, but still no one was seen-!
The large doors of the Great Hall finally burst open, nearly ripping the hinges out of the stone and a brigade of shadowed figures with pointy hats on brooms soared in the room.
Some of the witches from Quendrum Academy messed with the students, even the foreign ones. They grabbed their uniform hats, pulled on robe hoods, and snagged food from people’s plates. Students ducked and yelped to avoid getting a face full of broomstick straw.
The witches cackled as they messed up the Beauxbatons’ perfect hairstyles with their reckless flying.
The other bunches of witches simply high-fived some students or used their wands to rain down gold sparkles.
The new First Year students especially loved the sparkle showers.
A group of five soared into the hall in a ‘V’ formation, keeping ranks as they circled the entire interior of the Hall before flying low to the ground. Four of the witches flipped back as the leading female came to an abrupt halt in front of the Headmaster and floated in front of the pedestal.
“Agatha, lovely to see you again.” Dumbledore greeted with a warm smile.
The Headmistress smirked underneath her large witches hat. “A pleasure it is indeed, Albus.” She grinned widely. She was tall and thin with a perfect face and salt-and-pepper gray hair. Her blue eyes twinkled as she hopped off the broomstick and waved her wand to brighten the room again. “My girls and I are honored for you to have us.” At her words, her students floated down from the high ceilings and landed on the floor, benches, and tabletops.
With normal light returned, the audience could see the entire Quendrum student body. They all wore black and gold uniforms with long cloaks pinned around their necks with golden brooches of the school insignia in the front. They all wore classic witch hats with large brims and tall points, but all were vastly different from the other. All were decorated in wild, different ways.
One girl had cobwebs with a live spider hanging off the brim of her hat (the little spier did a small curtsy), while another girl wore a pastel colored hat with clumps of colorful flowers and lots and lots of lace. Another girl had a leather hat with intricate cloth patterns sewn into the fabric, two large golden thunderbird feathers and tiny colorful beaded charms swayed with every movement she made.
Half of the Gryffindor table gawked up at the young witch that nearly stepped in the bowl of mashed potatoes upon landing. You chuckled in embarrassment, “Sorry about that.”
Harry couldn’t help but stare at the pretty witch. The details of your face were delicately illuminated by the small balls of fire that floated within the small glass spheres that hung around the brim of her hat.
“Girls!” Mistress Hallewell called out.
The students of Quendrum fell in line and made their way up the center aisle.
Chuckles erupted when a witch in a terrarium themed hat slipped on a spoon and landed roughly on the bench.
The little frog housed within the pointed glass top jostled in its wood and mossy home and croaked in annoyance. “I’m sorry! I’m sorry!” She lifted a hand up and gently rubbed the glass to soothe her poor familiar.
Neville and other Gryffindors gawked at the terrarium the witch wore. Neville’s friends were positive he had just fallen in love right then and there.
Ironic since a witch in a bright pink hat with red roses, glittery hearts, and dove wings helped the witch with the frog to her feet.
You snickered at your friend as you carefully stepped down off the dining table, jumping when your free hand was grabbed and you met bright green eyes that shimmered like emeralds.
“T-Thank you.” You nodded in gratitude as the pretty boy helped you off the table and onto the floor.
Harry’s friends smirked and grinned up at their friend at the interaction. The twins elbowed and smacked each other as they couldn't believe their eyes.
Harry James Potter?? Having game with a pretty foreign witch?? Who knew??
Harry knew exactly what he had done, but did he care that his friends were going to chew him out and rip him apart tonight in teases and jests? Not one bit!
Not when his emerald green eyes stared into your illuminated (e/c) eyes.
The little glass spheres chimed and twinkled like fairies with every as you stood back on the ground.
“C’mon, (Y/n).” The same pink hat witch with hearts walked past with the frog witch. She also smirked at the interaction.
Your little love bubble popped and you remembered where you were. “Uhh t-thanks again.” You couldn’t fight the rush of butterflies that filled your stomach and your face expressed those feelings.
Harry nodded with a small smile - still star struck.
As you joined your covenant, Harry slinked back into his seat, but his eyes never tore from you.
Not even when Ron, the twins, or any of his other friends grinned at him.
At least his female friends made their curiosity and excitement less obvious.
“Now that we’ve all been introduced, let’s give our foreign friends a proper Hogwarts welcome!” Dumbledore whipped out his wand and flicked it, golden words appeared from the air and a small pointer bounced on the words as the Hogwarts student body began their performance.
“Hogwarts, Hogwarts, hoggy warty Hogwarts, teach us something please. Whether we be old and bald, or young with scabby knees our heads could do with filling with some interesting stuff.”
The foreign schools all had different reactions when the students began to sing.
Beauxbatons was gathered on the right side of the hall and exchanged pathetic looks with one another.
Durmstrang stood in the center and kept their usual unamused stone faces, however some fought off smirks and snorts.
“For now they're bare and full of air, dead flies and bits of fluff, do teach us things worth knowing.” Students didn’t know the words - or purposefulyl sung the wrong - others were incredibly off key and off beat. from somehwere in teh ocean of Hogwarts students someone sang it like funeral march.
Quendrum was gathered on the left and weren’t afraid to hide their expressions. Some danced in a goofy way, others stood expressionless or grinned and chuckled.
Harry flushed in embarrassment when his eyes met yours again; His arms were raised in the air to sway along with his colleagues as they sang.
You covered your mouth to hide your giggles, but Harry loved the way your cheeks rose and eyes squinted with your grin.
“Bring back what we've forgot! Just do your best! We'll do the rest and learn until our brains all rot!”
Harry ducked his head when Ron and Lee wrapped their arms around his shoulders and began to rock him back and forth to the beat. You laughed again.

Artemis Hexley and the Circle of Khanna

Chapter 12: Alanza Alves
A/N: There’s a new student at school… And Artemis isn’t keen. Thankfully, she has another visitor, and this one is much more welcome. Warnings: Mentions of death and grief.
Tumblr media
At breakfast on Sunday morning, Artemis received a message from Professor Sprout: the foreign exchange student - her new charge - would be arriving that afternoon.
“Oh, but I’m sure it will be okay,” said Penny, over the top of the Potions notes she was going over with Tonks as they ate their toast. “You never know, she might be really lovely!”
Artemis pursed her lips. She didn’t really care how lovely the new girl was, she still didn’t want to be the one to have to look after her. Still, she made her way to the entrance hall at the time Professor Sprout had requested, and found her head of house standing beside a girl in green robes.
“Ah, Artemis,” Sprout smiled and waved her over. “I was hoping that you would arrive soon. This is Alanza Alves, our new visitor from Castelobruxo.”
Alanza Alves was pretty - very pretty - with an olive complexion and brown eyes. Her hair was not quite as dark as Artemis’, though it was much neater, and her smile was broad and friendly. Artemis did not return it.
“Alanza, this is Artemis Hexley. She’s a sixth year, like yourself, and she’s one of the prefects. She very kindly has volunteered to help you to settle in.”
Artemis frowned. She hadn’t volunteered at all. Alanza Alves, however, seemed not to notice her unfriendly expression - or had maybe chosen to ignore it - for her smile widened even further, and she promptly placed her hands on Artemis’ shoulders and kissed her on both cheeks.
“It is so nice to meet you, Artemis, and very kind for you to want to help me,” she said, her voice bright in spite of Artemis’ obvious discomfort. “I am so looking forward to getting to know you.”
Artemis couldn’t say that she honestly felt the way, but was obliged to nod her head. “Yeah, sure.”
“I think it would be worth showing Alanza around the castle before dinner, so she knows where to go for her lessons,” said Professor Sprout. “As well as showing her the library, the Common Room, the Great Hall…”
“That’s probably a good idea,” Artemis agreed, and Sprout gave her a pointed look. “Oh, you want me to do it.”
“Yes, Artemis, that was the plan. I will make sure that your trunk and uniform gets to your dormitory safely, Alanza. You girls have fun.”
“Thank you, Professor Sprout,” Alanza beamed at Sprout as she walked away, before turning to Artemis expectantly. “Okay, so where do we go to first?”
“Depends. What do you want to see?”
“Everything! It is a beautiful castle, I would like very much to see it all, if you could show me.”
“Uh, right,” Artemis took a step away from Alanza, who was standing far too close to her for her liking. “Well, what subjects will you be taking? I can show you those, if you like?”
Alanza nodded ecstatically. “Herbology, Astronomy, Charms, Defence, and Creatures.”
That gave Artemis five places to show her, at least. She led Alanza through the castle and out towards the grounds, pointing out various places and things that might interest the foreign exchange student, but otherwise staying fairly quiet. Alanza did not seem to mind Artemis’ taciturn nature. She had enough enthusiasm and spoke enough to make up for the both of them, loudly admiring everything that Artemis showed her and telling her all about the similarities and differences between Hogwarts and Castelobruxo.
“You have so many towers,” Alanza sighed, looking up at the rooftops of the castle from the greenhouses. “We do not have nearly so many where I am coming from. Our school is tall but very square, and it shines like gold in the sunshine, which is very beautiful. It has a forest around it, like yours.” Alanza gazed wistfully in the direction of the Forbidden Forest. “Perhaps we can go to the forest next.”
Artemis felt her whole body tense.
“No,” she said, quickly. Too quickly, because Alanza tilted her head in curiosity. Artemis shook her head. “No, students aren’t allowed in there. Too dangerous.”
“The forest at Castelobruxo can be also very dangerous. One time, I went out looking for plants, and I became lost. I lived off ants and rainwater for two weeks before I found my way back. Do you have any interesting stories about Hogwarts?”
“Not really,” Artemis lied. “Alanza, do you want to go and meet my friends?”
Alanza was as delighted by the prospect of meeting Artemis’ friends as she had been by everything else in and around the castle. This was just as well, for Artemis had already grown tired of talking to her, and Penny would be much better at it than she was, anyway. But somehow, Artemis managed to miss Penny and Tonks in every place she thought they would be, from the Hufflepuff Common Room to the library. In the end, she gave up looking for them. It was almost time for dinner in the Great Hall, and there was bound to be someone there who would be happy to chat with the foreign exchange student so that she wouldn’t have to.
Penny and Tonks were already in the Great Hall when they arrived, and as it turned out, several people were interested in coming over to meet Artemis’ new companion.
“Hi there,” said Diego Caplan, scooting down the bench to sit next to Alanza, “I don’t think we’ve met before. I’m Diego, it’s lovely to meet you.”
Artemis rolled her eyes as Diego held out his hand to Alanza for her to shake, and again as Alanza responded by kissing Diego on both cheeks. When Charlie, Andre, Jae and Barnaby walked over to say hello to the new girl, all three of them received the same greeting. Andre returned the gesture and complimented Alanza on her necklace, Charlie cleared his throat awkwardly, Barnaby’s cheeks turned pink and his eyes widened, and Jae smirked.
“You’re going to make yourself very popular,” he told Alanza, a look of mischief in his eyes. “If that’s how you say hello to strangers, I can only imagine what kind of treatment your friends receive.”
Tonks choked on her treacle tart, and Jae promptly received a sharp elbow in the ribs from Artemis. Further down the table, Beatrice Haywood was watching the scene whilst pouring pumpkin juice onto the table next to her glass.
“Your friends, they are so funny,” Alanza laughed, as the boys walked away, Barnaby still staring at her openly over his shoulder. “I think that we will all get on very nicely.”
“Oh, I’m sure that we will,” Penny nodded encouragingly. “Now, have you considered joining any clubs or societies at all?”
Artemis sighed, partly out of exasperation and partly relief. At least she could count on her friends to make hosting Alanza bearable. Or so she thought, until they returned to the dormitory to find Alanza’s belongings at the foot of Rowan’s empty bed.
As Artemis watched Alanza get into the bed that had until the previous month been Rowan’s, she felt a painful twisting sensation in her core, a mixture of anger and mournfulness at the sight of Alanza in a space that should have still belonged to Rowan, followed a sudden pang of guilt when she realised that this was the first time all afternoon that she had pictured her best friend’s face. She knew why she felt so awful all of a sudden: it was as if Alanza was attempting to take Rowan’s place.
And, worse still, Artemis had allowed her to do it.
By Thursday, Artemis had already had enough of Alanza Alves. It wasn’t that Alanza was unpleasant, on the contrary, she was too friendly. Not that everyone else seemed to mind that. So far, every single one of Artemis’ friends and teachers had been charmed by Alanza’s enthusiasm, bright smiles, loud voice, and wild stories. Then again, they weren’t the ones having to spend almost every minute of every single day with her.
Luckily, on Thursday lunchtime, Artemis was given the promise of some respite, when Charlie came to sit with the Hufflepuff girls at lunchtime.
“What are you doing this evening?” he asked Artemis.
“Nothing.”
“Alright,” Charlie shrugged. “That’s good, because I’ve got a surprise for you after lessons. Meet me at the Clock Tower?”
Artemis agreed, and after lessons finished for the day, left Alanza in the company of Penny and Tonks. She met Charlie at the Clock Tower as he’d suggested, and followed him in the direction of the main gates.
“We’re going to Hogsmeade?”
“McGonagall said it was okay,” said Charlie. “She thought that you could do with… Well, you’ll see.”
He continued walking until they reached the Three Broomsticks, at which point he stopped outside the main door, and turned to face Artemis.
“You want me to close my eyes, don’t you?” Artemis muttered, and Charlie hummed in response.
“Well, you don’t have to, but it is a surprise.”
Artemis looked at him blankly before closing her eyes. She heard the door to the Three Broomsticks open and swing closed again.
“Sorry, I forgot you wouldn’t be able to just follow,” Charlie’s voice told her. She felt the light pressure of a hand on her upper arm. “That’s me, by the way.”
“Thank Godric for that.”
She heard Charlie laugh gently, and as he led her forward, the air changed from being bitterly cold to warm as they entered the inn. After a few more steps they stopped.
“Alright, you can open your eyes now.”
Artemis did so, and found herself standing face-to-face with Bill Weasley. Tears pricked her eyes as he wrapped his arms around her and she buried her face in his woollen coat, her own arms around his waist.
“I’m sorry, little one,” she heard him whisper, as he stroked her hair. “I’m so sorry.”
Artemis pulled her head away and shook it. “It’s not your fault.”
“I know, but Rowan…” Bill sighed. Looking at him properly, he appeared to have lost weight, and his face was paler than Artemis had expected, considering that he had recently returned from Greece. “I can’t believe it. It’s just so crap.”
There was nothing Artemis could say to this. It was true, of course, but it was an understatement. Bill nodded his head towards a table, and approaching it, pulled out a seat for Artemis.
“How is everyone doing?” he asked her.
“Horribly. Penny keeps bursting into tears and Tonks can’t change her hair properly.”
“I see. And you?”
There was a silence, in which Artemis frowned and considered the question.
“I don’t know how I’m doing,” she told Bill, eventually. “I’m just doing, I guess.”
“How do you feel?”
“Tired, mostly.”
“And are the teachers doing stuff to help you?”
“Sort of. Sprout said we should have things to work on and take our minds off things a bit. Penny’s helping Tonks to catch up on the N.E.W.T. level potions course. They always seem less sad when they’re doing that.”
“That’s good. Really good,” Bill nodded. “What about you? What have you got to do?”
Artemis sighed. “I’m looking after Alanza.”
“Foreign exchange student,” Charlie explained, clearly having noticed the confused look on Bill’s face. “From Castelobruxo.”
“That doesn’t sound great,” Bill’s expression was growing more concerned by the second.
“She’s alright. Bit much, but-”
“I mean in general, Charlie. What made Sprout think that was a good idea?”
“Well, I don’t know,” said Charlie. “I suppose she thought that Alanza would be good company, or something.”
“I just think it’s a bloody stupid idea trying to get Artemis to look after some girl from Castelobruxo when it only takes one look at her to see that at the moment she’s hardly able to take care of herself.”
“She’s right here, you know,” Artemis scowled, and both Bill and Charlie turned to look at her. Bill’s lips twitched into a small smirk.
“So she is,” he leant over to ruffle her hair, stopping when Artemis made no effort to make him stop. He smiled sadly. “Somewhere, anyway.”
Not really sure what Bill meant by that, Artemis leant with her chin on one hand as Bill and Charlie continued their discussion, looking up when Rosmerta brought over a tray of Butterbeer and large bowl filled with chips.
“Make sure she eats those,” the landlady told the boys, her free hand still resting on the crown of Artemis’ head, before she left to serve a paying customer.
“Do you really want to be looking after this Eliza girl?” Bill asked, pushing the bowl of chips towards Artemis.
“Not really.”
“You should tell Professor Sprout.”
“I tried. But Alanza knows I’m meant to be looking after her now, so it’s too late. She’s moved into our dormitory and everything,” Artemis told Bill. She neglected to mention exactly where in the dormitory Alanza was staying, blinking hard to not have to think about it.
“Can Penny and Tonks not keep an eye on her for you? She must be with them now, right?”
“Yeah, but they’re too busy with Potions, aren’t they? It’s all they’re ever doing.”
“Okay,” Bill frowned. “Charlie, you could maybe take her off Artemis’ hands every now and then, couldn’t you?”
Charlie shrugged. “Yeah, I guess so. We’re in a lot of the same classes.”
“That settles it, then. You keep Eliza out of Artemis’ way so she can focus on… Well, whatever seems to help.”
“That sound alright with you?” Charlie asked Artemis, taking a single chip from the bowl and handing it back to her. Artemis nodded, and he smiled, pushing the bowl closer to her.
“Things will get better, Artemis. You just need to concentrate on yourself right now.”
“Thanks,” Artemis whispered, letting Bill squeeze her shoulders again. “And thanks for coming, too.”
“I couldn’t not come, not after everything that’s happened and how upset Charlie said you were. I just wish I’d come at Christmas, really.”
“How was Christmas?” Charlie asked him.
“Weird not having you there. Either of you,” Bill smiled sadly. “Ron and Ginny were okay, but everyone else was worried about you, and sad about everything. It wasn’t the best Christmas, to be honest.”
“Still gutted to have missed it.”
Bill seemed to consider Charlie’s words for a moment before tilting his head, almost smiling.
“Why don’t we give it another go?” he suggested. “I’m here, the castle’s just there. Percy, Fred, and George could do with a distraction from all this as much as we could.”
Charlie shrugged his shoulders and nodded his head, and Bill nudged Artemis with his elbow.
“Eat up, Artemis. We have to get back.”
The three of them returned to the castle with a small crate of Butterbeer from Rosmerta and some cakes from Madam Puddifoot’s, which Artemis and Bill took down to the kitchens while Charlie fetched the three younger Weasley brothers from the Gryffindor Common Room.
With a word from Artemis to the house elves, they were quickly provided with an ample supply of gammon, potatoes and vegetables, and Bill conjured reams of bunting and several multicoloured candles which hovered in the air over their table. When Charlie arrived with Percy and the twins, the kitchen was filled with the smell of hot food and a cosy glow that reflected off the boys’ five red-haired heads.
As the Weasleys gathered around the table, adding noise and movement to the scene in front of her, Artemis was filled with the strange sense of looking in on something from the outside. She backed away, towards the door of the kitchens.
“Artie, where are you going?” Charlie leaned back from the table to call across to her. “Come and join in.”
“No thanks. I’m fine,” Artemis said, and five pairs of eyes stared back at her. “This is a family thing. I’m not family.”
Charlie shrugged his shoulders in response, and Bill’s eyes became filled with a deep sympathy. The twins exchanged glances, but neither of them said a word. The only one to speak at all was Percy.
“You might as well be,” he said quietly. “Come and sit with us. You deserve a second Christmas as much as we do.”
Percy’s voice held no judgement or condescension, and his face was completely straight. He offered Artemis a small smile, which she returned as she walked back towards the brothers and joined them, the little colourful candles continuing to bob above their heads.
Artemis returned to the dormitory better fed than she had been in for a fortnight, and for the first time in almost a month, she managed to sleep through the night without the aid of a potion. The following morning, she awoke groggy and dazed, unsure of the point at which her dreams had begun and ended.
She looked around the still dark dormitory, and seeing that all beds were filled, her heart lifted. Perhaps she had been dreaming for long than she realised. But then, the dark-haired girl in the bed next to hers turned over, revealing her face. Alanza’s face. A lump formed in Artemis’ throat, and she swallowed it back hard, reaching for Fergus and burying her face into his fur so that she would no longer have to look at the girl in Rowan’s bed.
When the bell rang to mark the start of the day, Penny and Tonks soon began to stir, but Alanza was the first to actually get up and start to dress herself, chattering away with so much energy that anyone would think that she had already been down to the Great Hall for breakfast and a cup of coffee or two.
“Wotcher,” Tonks yawned, still sitting in bed with her hair - a less mousey shade of brown than it had been a week ago - in complete disarray. “You’re happy this morning.”
“Yes, I am very excited,” Alanza nodded, hurriedly tying her tie. “Today we have Creature class. It is my favourite class back at Castelobruxo, and the one I am most looking forward to at Hogwarts.”
Alanza’s high spirits did not lower all morning. If anything, by the time she and Artemis made their way down to Kettleburn’s outdoor classroom, she was practically bouncing with excitement.
“One time, I found a fire slug, and I tried to keep it in my bedroom as a pet, and it set my pillow on fire,” she told Artemis, gesturing wildly with her hands as she did so. “Oh, but when my mother found out… She has never been so angry.”
When they arrived for the lesson, they found that the paddocks had been filled with a several white horses each with a single horn on their heads and accompanied by a gold foal. Alanza clapped her hands together delightedly and grabbed hold of Artemis’ arm as she pointed with her other hand.
“Look, Artemis! Unicorns!”
Artemis pulled her arm away from Alanza’s grip and forced a smile. Alanza rushed over to talk to Barnaby, Liz, and Charlie, who were all watching the unicorns at a slight distance, just as Kettleburn limped over to the group.
“That’s right,” he smiled at Alanza. “Unicorns. Identifiable by…”
“The bloody great horns on their heads,” Merula said, rolling her eyes.
“Yes, Miss Snyde, that is their most discernible feature. But sometimes they do not have horns, can anyone tell me why?”
Ismelda Murk raised her hand, and Kettleburn nodded at her.
“Someone might’ve chopped it off,” she told him. “Like, with a big knife or something.”
“Well, yes, that is an example,” Kettleburn said, regarding Ismelda out of the corners of his narrowed eyes. “Any other, less violent, reasons? Yes, Miss…?”
“Alves. Alanza Alves,” Alanza beamed, her eyes still lit up with the sight of the unicorns. “The foals, they do not have horns yet. I think they do not get horns until they are maybe a few years old. They are not gold then, I don’t think, but silver. They turn white like these later, but their hooves stay gold even then. So, even if the horn has been cut off with a knife, you can still see that it is a unicorn and not just a white horse.”
Kettleburn smiled, clearly impressed with Alanza’s answer. He wasn’t the only one. Liz Tuttle’s eyebrows were raised almost to her hairline, and Barnaby’s mouth hung open until Charlie nudged him gently and cleared his throat.
“Stop staring, it’s rude,” Artemis thought she heard him mutter under his breath.
“Of course, at Castelobruxo your teaching in the field of Magizoology must be top drawer,” Kettleburn told Alanza. “Perhaps you would like to be the first to attempt to win the creatures’ trust, Miss Alves.”
“I would love to!”
Alanza didn’t need to be told twice. She clamoured up over the fence and into the paddock, where she started to approach the unicorns, one hand held forward.
“They do prefer females, generally, do unicorns,” said Professor Kettleburn. “Still, the younger ones do tend to be more trusting of both wizards and witches.”
“It is okay,” said Alanza, shaking her head. “All creatures like me.”
Behind Artemis, Merula made a derisive snorting noise, but Alanza had a point. One by one, each and every unicorn started to walk slowly towards her until she was giggling and attempting to pat all of them at once, while one nuzzled her neck.
“They are super great!”
As Alanza continued to ingratiate herself with the unicorns, Kettleburn started to lecture the class on poaching and husbandry. Merula leaned in and hissed in Artemis’ ear.
“So, this is your new friend, then?” she asked, her eyes narrowed at Alanza.
“Not really. Sprout told me to look after her.”
“Why are you doing what Sprout says?”
“I dunno. Just am,” Artemis muttered, and Merula made a disapproving noise. “What?”
“Well, I just didn’t think you’d want to replace Khanna so quickly, that’s all.”
Artemis’ breath caught in her throat, and though she opened her mouth to respond to Merula, she found herself unable to say anything at all.
“You alright?” Charlie asked, as the class split into their small groups. Artemis nodded, not sure she even had the ability to repeat Merula’s words. “Come on, let’s go and join Alanza.”
Each of the three groups had their own unicorn and foal to work with, though the others had difficulty dragging their unicorns away from Alanza. As Charlie and Artemis joined Alanza with the remaining unicorn, Artemis could still feel Merula’s cold stare on her back.
“That was pretty impressive,” Charlie told Alanza, feeding a carrot to the unicorn foal, its mother still eyeing him warily from behind the girls. “They seemed to take to you really quickly. The unicorns, I mean.”
“Ah, but like I say, creatures like me. My grandfather always said that I have a gift. Maybe he is right, I don’t know,” Alanza paused to kiss the unicorn on its nose before continuing. “You know, one time, I went for a walk, and I thought I stood on a piece of wood, but it was a dugbog. I fed it some biscuits from my pocket, and it followed me all the way home. It did bite my leg too, I still have the scars, see.”
With that, Alanza swung her leg up so that her foot rested on the rump of the unicorn foal, and she pulled down her sock to reveal a set of very old tooth marks on her shin. Charlie blinked twice before nodding his head slowly.
“I do see, yeah,” he said, quickly averting his gaze. He made eye contact with Artemis and pulled a face as Alanza returned her foot to the floor.
Normally, Artemis would have laughed, but after Merula’s comment, she didn’t feel like it. She hadn’t felt like it in a while, now that she thought about it.
“Alanza, I think we have the exact same timetable, actually,” Charlie said, still looking at Artemis. “I was thinking, it probably makes sense if we go to our classes together for a couple of weeks. The castle’s enormous, and it would mean you won’t need to worry about getting lost between lessons.”
“This isn’t too inconvenient for you?” Alanza asked him, and Charlie shook his head.
“Not at all.”
“That will be so nice of you! Artemis, you have such kind friends.”
“Yeah, I do,” Artemis said, and as Alanza’s back turned from her, she looked at Charlie and mouthed the words: “Thank you.”
“My older brother had a penpal from Castelobruxo,” Charlie continued, having given Artemis the faintest hint of a smile. “Sounds like a fascinating place, Magizoology-wise. He told me about the Caipora…”
“Oh, yes! They are such sweet little spirits,” Alanza sighed. “Oh, but they are very troublesome, always up to mischief. One time, they summoned every single left shoe in the school and hung them up on branches all through the forest. It took almost a week to get everybody’s shoes back. We all had to only wear one for days. Do you have any creatures that are so mischief-like at Hogwarts?”
“Just my younger brothers, really.”
Alanza placed her hand on Charlie’s forearm and laughed loudly, and he looked at her as if she might have gone mad.
“I am half-joking,” he told her, grinning a little. “But we have our fair share of creatures here, too. There’s the unicorns, of course, then we have wolves, grindylows, merpeople, Thestrals, don’t get me started on Kettleburn’s missing Chimaera…”
“Thestrals?” Alanza asked, her hair falling over one shoulder as she tilted her head. “I have heard of those, they are supposed to be fascinating. Do you think we will get to see those in Creatures class as well?”
“Uh, I’m not sure,” Charlie glanced sideways at Artemis, who had stiffened at the mention of the Thestrals. “Probably not.”
“Oh, that is a great shame,” Alanza said, wistfully. “I would very much love to see a Thestral.”
There was a moment of tense silence that seemed to stretch out into an eternity. Eventually, Charlie lowered his head to look at the ground, his voice low and steady as he said:
“No, you wouldn’t.”
There was a questioning look in Alanza’s eyes, and she frowned. Charlie looked up at her with a good-natured smile and quickly changed the subject back to the Caipora of Castelobruxo.
Artemis looked away, her vision starting to blur. But in her periphery, she could just about make out the violet eyes of Merula Snyde glaring at Alanza angrily and unwaveringly.

Speaking of Castelobruxo's uniform, I've made this based on actual brazillians schools thinking about the cold and hot days, but I still think that something is missing 🤔

Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mas vou dar o privilégio da dúvida que as roupas por baixo da capa são de Hogwarts, ou dela de frio pq a saia é diferente do uniforme de lá.
Mas bem eu tb que sou chata kkkkk

Castelobruxo, A History
a/n: This is half-based on the post in Wizarding World and half-based in my own ideas (talked about it earlier here). Hope you all enjoy! Never meant to offend! Let us all remember that South America is incredibly big, so I had to say there’s (at least) a second school there. If my “readers” come from Castelobruxo, this is gonna be the version of it, so stay tuned for those fics! *gif not mine
The Brazilian school for magic, which takes students from all over South America, found hidden deep within the rainforest. The fabulous castle appears to be a ruin to the few Muggle eyes that have ever fallen upon it (a trick shared by Hogwarts; opinion divided on who got the idea from whom). Castelobruxo is an imposing square edifice of golden rock, often compared to a temple, but that is just its facade, because, as you walk in, one may found a gigantic place, with its design similar to Portuguese castles.
Tumblr media
HOUSES:
Inspired by Hogwarts, during the colonization of Brazil, Portuguese and other European wizards decided to create Castelobruxo’s own houses. If you want a test to find out your house, click here.
Pintadas: The determined and driven by-power students get regularly selected for this house, represented by the colour black. Students from Pintadas are often very good at Defense Against the Dark Arts classes.
Guaras: This house is for the clever and lonely workers, represented by yellow. The students are generally great at Potions.
Botos: Here are the students known for their generosity and authenticity, and they are all very good at Transfiguration. Their house colour is pink.
Araras: The most patient and disciplined students are from here, with blue as their symbol. Their speciality is Herbology.
Even though separated, students tend to sit mixed with the different houses for the feast and such activities. As for the sports concern (competitions), they have teams not based in your house, so anyone can try out for any team.
*2016 Update: After the change of Headmasters, they no longer divided the kids in houses as they were abolished.
UNIFORM:
Although, in the beginning, the school used to be very strict about the uniform — females with dark green skirts and white shirts and males with dark green trousers and white shirts, all with green robes —that is not a general rule anymore. There are many different types of uniforms on sale for the students, with the school colour or their houses colours all acceptable. Females are not obliged to wear skirts anymore, and shorts are allowed — however, they must be knee-length.
ORIGINS:
The actual origins of the school have yet to get discovered. There are legends that the indigenous tell, but there is nothing confirmed. The lack of knowledge about the foundation is due to colonization. With the arrival of European wizards to the South American countries, they changed everything the indigenous had established, leaving just some tricks behind — like the protection offered by the Caiporas and the spells around the building that made the school invisible to the Muggles.
The school used to be much more welcoming to the native people, as it only received native students. However, with the arrival of Europeans, many native students got decriminalized, and they were no longer welcome in the school. The new wizards set reforms in the school, such as in its intern appearance — it now resembles Portuguese castles — and they stopped teaching spells only the indigenous knew.
One of the improvements set was the spell for the idiom surrounding the school — the student can have any native language, but once inside the castle, they will start speaking the same one, English. The chosen language was another attempt to copy England.
Around 1780 and 1900, non-Brazilian wizards were hunted and killed by the Brazilian colonizers because they were “different and dangerous”. Once the period was over, the students were accepted again in Castelobruxo. However, most of them choose to go to the second, a newly founded school in South America — a location unavailable for Brazilian wizards.
Castelobruxo only started accepting indigenous and black students in 1895, due to the end of slavery in Brazil, in 1888.
RELATIONSHIP WITH THE MUGGLES:
The “normais”, as the Castelobruxo wizards refer to the Muggles, are not seen with poor eyes. On the contrary, witches and wizards of South America, especially Brazil, were consistently fond of them, usually copying their clothing style and cuisine.
Their likeness towards the “normais” only raised over the years, and they lived pacifically together. There are, however, many things they disagree with the Muggles, essentially when it comes to political affairs.
The school accepts any muggle technology (such as cell phones, laptops, etc.). They work fine on school grounds, but there is a limited time to use them. The school also offers telephone booths for those who do not have their own cell phones.
SPORTS:
Castelobruxo offers a range of sports activities. There is a stadium-size Quidditch pitch available for any team to use. There is also a football, the Muggle sport, field, which the students use more often. Although they practice the Muggle version of the sport, they often prefer the Wizard version, where the enchanted ball runs by itself. They also have swimming competitions in the school pool, and there was a time around the 1980s that the school offered dance lessons.
SEMESTERS:
The classes in Castelobruxo start on the first Monday of February and end on the last Friday of November. In that way, during the holidays at the end of the year, the students stay home.
They also have a week to recess in the middle of July, but since it is an option, most would rather stay in school.
The first class is right after breakfast, at eight a.m. After that, students have a lunch break around eleven a.m. and then return at one p.m., only leaving for their free activities at three p.m.
The school starts welcoming students around the age of 14 for the first year, and they graduate around the age of 18.
It is optional if the student wants to do a specialization that the school offers (similar to a college). However, if the student decides to do so, they start the year after graduation and, depending on the chosen theme, it takes them around two years to graduate.
NUMERICAL DATA:
— Number of Students per Year: There are around thousand and five hundred students per year in Castelobruxo.
— Students’ Home Countries (in %):
Brazil: 90%
Venezuela: 5%
Colombia: 2%
Paraguay: 1%
Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia, Uruguay, Chile, Guyana, French Guiana and more: 2%
— How many students decide to do the specialization program? Around 45% of graduates choose to do the program.
— Exchange students per year (from other magical schools): Castelobruxo offers an excellent exchange students program and generally welcomes ten students from other wizarding schools.

I haven’t made it to year seven yet but has Alanza made an appearance in the main story yet? And if so, is she still wearing her Castelobruxo uniform since she decided to stay in hogwarts? I have to admit, I am curious to see which house she would be put in. My bet’s on gryffindor or hufflepuff.
As far as I can tell, no. She has yet to make an appearance in the main story of Year 7. I’m pretty sure her last appearance was at the party in the Three Broomsticks at the end of Year 6, when she talked about staying at Hogwarts for another year.  Which has yet to be expanded upon itself. I hope she’ll tell us why and how that happened, but she might not. Otherwise, I’ve yet to see any evidence that she’s shifted from her Castelobruxo uniform, and I follow the data-mines, so I think a sprite like that would probably have shown up in the game’s code beforehand.
Of course, if they did give her a sprite in Hogwarts robes, I feel like this wouldn’t be a question that came up. Like, not to burst anyone’s bubble, but there’s a good chance they would just put Alanza in the generic, black-lined and neutral version of the Hogwarts robes. Y’know, the ones that everyone wears before they get Sorted? We know the sprite exists, from the opening sequence of the game. Alanza would very likely just be given that, to avoid a need to commit to “Sorting” her or opening up the can of worms that would be that particular question. Like, if she’d get Sorted at all.
I mean, she probably wouldn’t, but there’s no reason it’s impossible. And at the end of the day, she would need to stay somewhere, right? I guess she could be staying in one of the teacher’s offices, or Dumbledore’s office, but that’s the boring answer and it’s hardly the full experience of being a Hogwarts student. As far as her House goes, I agree with you. Though it somewhat depends, since going off her everyday personality, she’s less out-of-the-box...but she could still be a Gryffindor. About time we got some girls in Gryffindor.

Castelobruxo
Tumblr media
I never had a problem saying that I am Brazilian, so obviously I would be a student at Castelobruxo. So here is a simple drawing of me wearing the South American school uniform.
So, I would like to know, according to your country, in which wizard school would you study? (And also find my companions from Castelobruxo).
I look forward to hearing about your school.

09/01/1998 (2)
Part 1 || Part 2
Here’s part 2 of a 2-part fic that I wrote that commemorates Clara’s Hogwarts friends/peers lost to battle against the forces of evil. I hope everyone’s enjoyed it so far.
The backyard wasn’t really much to look at at first glance. It was just an open grassy field, almost as big as the Quidditch pitch, with a few Wiggentrees sprouting by the border to accommodate the Bowtruckles that live there. Over the last few days, though, Barnaby had set up a couple of comfortable tents for the guests, courtesy of Hagrid who lent them for this occasion--and in the centre of the ring of tents was a huge bonfire pit with a stone border around it. A little ways away stood a table where large sky lanterns around the size of Hagrid’s pumpkins were sitting on, as well as the refreshments that a few were kind enough to move from inside. Indeed, as the two sisters arrived everyone else was milling around waiting for them--the sun had almost fully set by now, and the first stars were just beginning to twinkle in the dark periwinkle sky.
“Everything alright?” Charlie asked Clara then. “Nothing serious?”
Clara nodded. “Yeah. Everything’s fine--I just remembered, I had to wear this dagger for this important ceremony. It was custom in the Chinese Wizarding Task Force to wear this as part of our uniform, but also to wear to honour the fallen.”
“Cool,” Ismelda remarked quietly, a wicked smile growing over her face. Somehow it seemed like her love for blades never went away.
“I think we should start lighting up the bonfire at least. Hopefully no one asks too many questions about it,” Clara said. “And then we’ll get to the lanterns.”
Everyone nodded and spread out around the fire pit in a large ring, pulling out their wands and pointing them at the pile of wood in front of them. “Incendio!”
The moment the flames caught the wood and rose to the sky, the moment the lanterns were lit, Clara looked around at everyone present before staring at the lantern in her hands, the bright orange flames pulsing through the thin white paper. Soon, the sky would be lit with more than just stars tonight. Where joy was once spread through the Great Hall as students old and new dined upon the fine feasts prepared by the Hogwarts house elves, there was now the hint of solemnity not often present on the day of fresh starts.
“Wait, Clara! Don’t start without us!”
Clara’s head snapped at the sound of her brother’s voice, and she stared in awe as Jacob came running towards the group, two women she almost didn’t recognize trailing behind him. One of them had her brown hair tied up messily in a bun, her navy blue robes swishing as she ran. The other had a bright green scrunchie wrapped tightly in her long brown hair, her face marked with a light layer of soot and her t-shirt ripped from what could only be a set of claws.
Her heart leapt at the sight. At least Jacob was here tonight--and he would stay for much longer than just a few moments.
“Jacob!” she called, waving them over. “And…”
“Aurelie and Alanza,” Jacob explained, gesturing to the two women. “They showed up at the door just as I came by. Probably came by Portkey, not sure--but they said they knew you and wanted to join you in tonight’s ritual, so I agreed.”
“Of course they’re welcome,” Clara said, a small smile on her face as she recalled fond memories with the two girls back at Hogwarts. Aurelie was Penny’s pen-friend from Beauxbatons, and she came by Hogwarts at one point to visit and search for an invaluable alchemy artefact. Alanza was an exchange student from Castelobruxo who came to Hogwarts shortly after Rowan’s untimely death, and she helped her get back on her feet again in the time she was there with her sunny disposition and cheerful outlook on life. “It’s good to see you both again.”
“Oui, it has been so long!” Aurelie agreed, stepping forward to give Clara a hug. “I trust that you have been well?”
“As well as I have been,” Clara responded with a nod. “We all definitely need to catch up some time.”
“Were you really in China for a while?” Alanza asked. “How was it?”
Clara only chuckled a bit at Alanza’s question--after all, she once said as an exchange student she came to Hogwarts looking for adventure. “It was...quite interesting, to say the least. I got to see more of China in my task force days, so that counts for something.”
“We can join the circle, can we?” Aurelie asked then.
The circle. How strange it was to think back on the last time the circle was so important. Clara nodded and swallowed at a lump in her throat, forcing herself to retain the smile on her face. “Of course. You can grab one of the lanterns there--we have a few extra.”
The two women nodded as they went over to Badeea holding up two more lanterns already decorated and lit.
Jacob smiled as well at his little sister, holding up an all-too-familiar scarf in his hands. “I brought this from home, just in case.”
It was Rowan’s scarf--the same scarf Clara suggested she’d buy at Diagon Alley the very first time they met. She found it in the school courtyard one night while mourning for Rowan on her path to becoming Head Girl, and she protected it with her life ever since. She reached out to take it, feeling the fraying wool between her fingers, and wound the stripes of white, red, orange, pink, yellow, and green around her shoulders.
“Thanks, Jacob.” Clara gave her brother a nod, and Jacob nodded solemnly as he picked up another lantern from the table, then took his place between little Em and Bill in the circle.
Eventually, everyone took their places in the circle around the bonfire, and Clara cleared her throat.
“Thanks for coming, everyone.”
Clara glanced around at the group of friends gathered before her, each of them looking expectantly at her. The memory of another time, a smaller circle of friends, struck her with the force of a bomb once again, and she clenched her fists tightly at her sides in hope that she wouldn’t cry. No, she couldn’t cry. Ben and Merula were no longer here to back her up.
“I know it’s a bit weird to call you all here only two days before the wedding,” Clara commenced in a strained voice. “And I have a very good reason for leaving the wedding off for so long at all--but that’s not what I want to talk about. Do you remember what September 1 used to mean to us?”
“The day we board the Hogwarts Express to go to Hogwarts?” George recalled fondly, glancing over at Charlie and Bill who nodded encouragingly.
“Exactly. It marked the start of a new school year…” Clara confirmed, taking a shaky breath. “The end of the summer holidays used to mean another chapter in the making--for all of us developing our individual talents, sharpening our magical skills, strengthening friendships and relationships...and, for me, unearthing the secrets of ‘R’ and the Cursed Vaults.”
She caught sight of Murphy and Orion sharing an uneasy glance before turning their heads back to her. Murphy had just opened his mouth to say something when Skye shot him a glare, and he closed his mouth respectfully.
“Over the years, we lost some friends near and dear to us,” Clara continued. “Rowan Khanna died a hero in the face of the unforgivable. Cedric Diggory was killed defying the Dark Lord alongside Harry Potter in the Triwizard Tournament. Dobby sacrificed his life defying his masters to save Harry. He died a free elf.”
Bill and Fleur nodded grimly at that, Fleur clutching tightly onto her handkerchief while Bill put a comforting arm around her. Even Aurelie and Alanza clasped hands at the news--clearly, they had missed out more than they dared to hope.
“And there were more casualties in the Battle of Hogwarts that I know we wouldn’t forget any time soon,” she went on. “Ben Copper. Nymphadora Tonks. Talbott Winger. Merula Snyde. Fred Weasley. Remus Lupin. They fought for the greater good of the wizarding world.”
The grip on her lantern wavered as she struggled not to cry. Tears were already burning in her eyes, blurring the figures of her friends and loved ones in front of her--she blinked them away and shook her head.
“Today, on September 1, 1998, let us not forget the sacrifices they made,” she proclaimed then. “On the day that we feast like kings and laugh like knights, we must also remember the heroes that made this possible for us. We now live in peace because of what they’ve done for us. We’re here today because of all they’ve given many yesterdays ago. Let this day be a new chapter for all of us, not only to live our best lives, but to honour those who made it possible.”
Somewhere up in the clear summer night, she could see the stars twinkle and gleam with the bright souls of her fallen friends. Perhaps Barnaby was right--given the right visionary scope, they would be looking down upon everyone just like angels in heaven. Each wink a laugh, each glimmer a smile. She smiled up into the vast deep blue above, feeling the pressure upon her hands and heart lift skyward, and for a moment she felt as if she was airborne.
“Preach!” Andre cheered from the other side of the bonfire, followed by a loud huzzah from everyone else around him. The shout eventually brought Clara down to earth, and she looked at Barnaby who nodded at her.
“Let us now lift our lanterns to the sky,” Clara finally told everyone. “Our gift to the souls who watch over us every day.”
Slowly, everyone raised their lanterns, releasing them into the air with a little push at the tips of their fingers. With their pulsating flames flashing brilliant orange light within their white wrapping, they looked like tiny hearts beating with life, dancing among the stars in the night. As they lifted their heads, gazing up at the lanterns now, Clara could only see the smiles of the dead in the sky, laughter echoing in her mind. Her heart swelled at the sight of Rowan’s smile in her memory, and she welcomed the tears burning in her eyes, trickling down her cheeks.
“I’m not one to gush, but...it’s nice,” Ismelda finally remarked with a nod, a subtle peaceful smile on her face.
“It’s beautiful,” little Em agreed, gazing over at Jacob who chuckled and wrapped an arm around her..
“They’re like little beating hearts,” Liz murmured in awe. “New souls granted to the ones who watch over us.”
The higher the lanterns rose, the lighter Clara’s heart felt as the burdens and grief crumbled away, bit by bit, into the dark cavern of oblivion. She glanced around at everyone now--Penny and Beatrice had their arms around each other; Liz, Chiara, and Tulip were all pointing at the stars above in the sky; and Diego, Jae, and Charlie stepped back from the bonfire to admire the view above. Even Murphy and Erika teared up a little at the sight, and Aurelie and Alanza dabbed at the tears in their eyes with spare handkerchiefs Fleur lent them.
“Hey! Let’s not forget a toast to the impending bride and groom!” Bill called out finally, conjuring a fine goblet of mead out of thin air and holding it up to Clara and Barnaby. “To your union!”
Barnaby only chuckled as he took Clara’s hand and spun her around once, pulling her close to him. “So, you think they liked that?”
“Yeah. You’re right, Barnaby,” Clara murmured, leaning her head on his shoulder. “Everyone here liked it--I’m sure they will too.”
As everyone conjured their own glasses of mead and repeated Bill’s toast, Barnaby took out his wand and pointed it to the sky--seconds later, enchanted fireworks popped and dazzled the sky, illuminating the night with colourful sparks. Pulling him close into a hug, Clara revelled now in the comfort of the night, the warmth of his embrace, and how lucky she was to be alive right now--with friends at her side and a heart as light as air.
Time cared not how anyone felt in this very moment. The seconds would tick on and on, but the moment will forever be immortalized in the memory of the living.
For it’s the living who cared how anyone came and left in the world, and it’s the living who would make every moment count.

So recently the lovely @angellazull did an awesome piece featuring himself in his country’s magic school’s robes  (in his case, Castelobruxo)...and I got inspired!
Being from America, my magic school should be Ilvermorny, but...yeah, Ilvermorny lives in New England. I spent almost all of my formative years in Maryland, not far from Washington, D.C. -- and quite frankly, if you don’t live in the U.S., then you’re probably unaware of the tensions that crop up between different areas of the country (i.e. Northeast VS South; Midwest VS Northeast and West) as well as between individual states (i.e. New York VS New Jersey; Texas VS California; Florida VS...everyone else...). It’s basically like saying that Beauxbatons is the only school for all of Western Euro -- oh wait. XDD
So yeah, um -- I have the headcanon that Ilvermorny and the Salem Witches Institute are not the only magic schools in North America, because that is absolutely impossible. So I made up a school for my younger self (since I’m no longer in school, LOL) that would’ve fit comfortably in my home state of Maryland -- a pair of schools called the Virtue School of Sorcery and Violl University, often casually shortened to Virtue-Violl. (Way too much additional info under the cut because I am a humongous nerd.)
The school was founded in the mid-18th century by Virtue Violl, a witch who was the last woman to be accused of witchcraft in Maryland’s history. She was spared punishment by the colony’s first Attorney General, a No-Maj named William Bladen. Even though Bladen suspected Virtue might in fact really be a witch, she had been nothing but kind to him, and so Bladen declared her innocent of any crimes and set her free. The two later became close friends, and Virtue decided to open a school where others like her could safely learn their craft away from No-Maj eyes. Decades later after the end of the Revolutionary War, this school would later be split in two, with both being named after her.
When a young mage in the Maryland area turns 10, they receive a letter inviting them to attend Virtue School of Sorcery the following school year. If the child’s family is magical, then the family can always decline in favor of attending another magical school or teaching their child magic from home. If the child’s family is No-Maj (or non-magical), then it’s strongly encouraged to accept the invitation or that of another school, but if the family still refuses, then the MACUSA may need to get involved to make sure that the child in question doesn’t become an Obscurus. If the invitation is accepted, then the following year, the child is provided a Portkey that will take them to their orientation.
Just like in other American private schools, the students are grouped by year (no house system here), and at the end of every school day, they’re allowed to return home to their families and sleep in their own beds. This both makes it easier to hide the two schools (the locations of which keep hopping up and down the Potomac River every few years to avoid No-Maj detection) and encourages the magical children to continue living in the No-Maj world so their magic isn’t as easily detected. (In America, the Wizarding World is even more underground than in the U.K., so Virtue-Violl strongly advocates its graduates being able to live comfortably in both the No-Maj and Wizarding Worlds. This is also why their school uniforms don’t include robes the way Hogwarts’ do.)
Once a student graduates from Virtue at the age of 14, they then move up to Violl University and study there for four more years. If Virtue teaches its students the building blocks of magic, then Violl teaches them how to apply what they’ve learned in the No-Maj and Wizarding Worlds. Violl students are more likely to be sent out into the No-Maj world on assignments and sent on field trips to the MACUSA, hidden magical communities, and other magical schools. Although the legal age in the Wizarding World is 17 and so senior year Violl students can openly use magic, they’re given an extra year of education in advanced magic like Animagi Transformation and Alchemy, both to make sure they’re well-rounded and so that Violl alumni are legal adults in the No-Maj world by the time they leave. Each Violl student must also pick an area of study like Charms or Magizoology as their specialty (rather like choosing a major in college), and is allowed access to a specific clubhouse (rather like a fraternity or sorority) for students interested in their area of study.
Virtue and Violl’s school uniforms have similar color schemes (burgundy/white/gold/black, just like the Maryland state flag), but slightly different designs. Virtue’s features a long-sleeved white shirt, a gold caped vest, a plaid burgundy skirt or shorts, black ankle boots, and (optional) a white pointed hat with a burgundy ribbon and Jobberknoll feather. Violl’s features a long-sleeved white shirt with a collar, a gold vest, and high-waisted, wide-legged burgundy plaid slacks -- the traditional hat is generally discarded at this point, so as to encourage a more “No-Maj-like” appearance in its older students, in an attempt to encourage future integration into No-Maj society. Burgundy-trimmed white wool capelets and long gold-trimmed black trenchcoats with flared sleeves are worn in colder weather.
The school’s mascot is the Jobberknoll, a magical bird that is silent its entire life before giving one last, long song just before dying. Its insignia, which depicts an crossed arrow and wand, resembles a Native American symbol of friendship and symbolizes the strong platonic bond between William Bladen and Virtue Violl.

Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry
I’m American and I will make this school much better. Screw Canon is stupid.
Countries of North America:
Canada
USA
Mexico
Greenland
School rules!(Aka headcanons):
Uniforms are only required for special events
One language course is required but Two(Different Languages) is the norm
There are a lot of ghosts
talk to the kitchen ghost he likes to chat but only knows Spanish so learn basic Spanish or be shunned, His name is Miguel and he likes to cook and enjoys the modern era
Make fun of someone’s culture/religion/customs/accent is instant detention and you have to write a 2 page apology letter.
If there is a fight take it outside and don’t bleed on your homework
Put your full name on something that can be lost, there are a lot of students and there will be name repeats
No moose/horses/cattle/deer/dragons/large animal not on the approved list in the cafeteria
If you need to order something go to the mock school at the front gates and order it, remember to use your own amazon account and card
Package day is on the monday and wednesday, if something comes in between you will have to walk down there and check yourself
letters are to be received during Lunch (and if requested by sender, when arrived)
there is a lot of bbqs on the weekends, just ask and you might get a plate. Maybe bring a pack of sodas
Tech in the dorms during school hours and for love of the gods beings damn pencil! We are not hogwarts! Notebooks and pencils none of the quill bull!
don’t scare the transfers
don’t prank the other schools(hogwarts can’t take other schools having fun and DON’T take a ‘drink’ from Koldovstoretz students, they have lax rules we don’t)
Make friends but remember they have different customs so be respectful and maybe learn or teach them something
It’s a free for all move in week
Treat others with kindness and respect, please do not fight other students… or schools
General headcanons
They have two people to a room and it’s fun. The dorms are huge towers near the front of the building are are huge spiral ramps with rooms. Co Ed dorms but only boys can be roommates with boys and girls can only be roommates with girls.
Some kids can do wandless magic with ease while others struggle, it depends on the student ’s genetics
They don’t tiptoe around history, they tell it how it is. There was a lot of white washing in the beginning but in more recent (last 80-90 years) years they have been trying to find out was truly happened and they are close to find out the full and true story
There are a lot of smaller wizarding schools it’s just that Ilvermorny is the biggest
The entrance to the wizard town around Ilvermorny is threw a fireworks stand
There is a lot of creature studies, the kids love it.
There has been rumors of changing the school name but no one can decide on a name
The headmaster is a nice Native American man and his wife and they don’t take your sh**
Mr Miguel the kitchen ghost is the head of the kitchen and culinary course, he’s very willing to learn new recipes and has a huge binder of recipes.
Lunch it spent anywhere the kids please as long as they don’t leave campus
All travel is covered by the school
It’s not in Massachusetts, the old school is in Massachusetts. The building was abandoned after a couple decades. The building is in southern Colorado/north New Mexico. It’s in the middle of the two basically. It has a LOT of land surrounding the buildings.
Bill Nye is a wizard that teaches at the school and he is 100% the most loved teacher there
Call teachers Ms/Mr last name, or professor last name. Otherwise is a big student cringe since they all were raised to say mr/ms
They made their own cheerleading teams because a lot of kids were disappointed they couldn’t continue their hobby
Lots of people lots of trouble
The student to teacher ratio is 13:1 but classes tend to be 15-28 students per class if there is one teacher
The new buildings of the school where actually built in the early 1900’s witch is when a new man was elected to take over the school
The way to get to school is a subway, there are hundreds of subways that lead to the school’s mock school. It costs nothing and makes it easy for people from all over North America to get to school
Castelobruxo (Brazil’s school) and Ilvermorny like each other, the students tend to hang out together when the quidditch matches take place. The Castelobruxo kids love the cheerleading Routines that the Ilvermorny kids put together.
Southern Hospitality is absolutely thriving.
So many animals… SO MANY
permanently frozen lake, it’s fun
Wizard Girl scots, they get so much money
Goes from age 10/11 to 19/20 but there are optional years of 19/20 - 23/24 it’s FREE, it’s wizard college
They have to wear something symbolizing their house, often a jacket, hat or bandana. But the uniform isn’t mandatory
Smart but dumbasses
They found their way to take electronics into school. Nothing stops a spiteful American.
NOTHING.
They find it hilarious that most other schools don’t have tech
The stairs move but the kids are having NONE of it. A cheerleader threw her bag and jumped onto the stairs grabbed her bag and bolted to her physics class. Nothing stops a cheerleader who’s close to failing physics.
It was in front of Hogwarts students, it shocked them.
Quidditch isn't very popular, they like hockey and (American) soccer more, no magic or anything just fun. Kids also like to teach American football but tend to go easier on the kids that are much smaller than they are.
They compete against the
Therapy is provided.
They doing WAY better then the rest of the US rn
There are no stairs, only ramps. That is because people like to skate down the ramps and it was easier to just make stairs ramps then repainting the railing like 100 times a year
Freedom of expression
They don’t have a lot of history to talk about they talk a lot about other countries.
Almost everyone Can to the splits or something close to it.
They study normal classes but now as uselessly.
Pe is a thing
More to come
