the Catch Me If You Can musical is CRIMINALLY underrated. It honestly slaps

I despise the Catch Me if You Can musical, it's one of my favorite movies and it's such a bad adaptation, and I've harbored resentment against everyone involved in it since. BUT since I've recently been listening to Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and Big Fish and just realized how fun Norbert Leo Butz is -- what if he had been Frank instead of Carl? I feel nothing for Aaron Tveit, and I'm only ever going to miss Tom Hanks as Carl in any adaptation anyway, so might as well put NLB in another role where he's a bold and charming jerk yet again.

I have a new favorite relationship arc:

Character A and Character B have been bitter rivals for years (bonus points if immortal enemies but I’m not picky). Like, dedicate their lives to taking each other down, getting inside the enemy’s head and understanding them intimately. Still enemies, but they understand enough to respect each other. Maybe even like each other. Still dedicated to bringing each other down, but now it’s more a game of wits, a challenge to outdo and out maneuver each other, like a chess game. Then the realization that maybe nobody understands them like their rival. That nobody knows them as deeply as this enemy. Still on opposite sides, but now they care for each other and even as they seek to destroy each other it speaks of a level of respect how they go about it. It’s become an understood mutually assured destruction. Or possibly the creation of their own little world. Doesn’t even have to be romantic. In fact, I prefer the romantic tension to be implied rather than direct because the shared intimacy is not one of affection but of shared struggles - those struggles being this huge chess game against each other.

Yes this is enemies-to-friends/enemies-to-lovers but the nuance. Rivalry in the details! Tension borne not of longing but of knowing that someone who is set against you can know you so intimately and yet not at all! Exhilaration and delight at besting and being bested! “How will you try and thwart THIS plan?” Fascination with that which you are supposed to revile! Give me enemies who play at being charming and charmed but are always on their guard with each other, now this one having the upper hand, now that one. Eye rolls at someone else trying to set themselves against you because “you’re not my REAL enemy,” because who could compare?

Catch Me If you Can musical concept idea: the stage starts being stripped and the actors change out of costume into their regular clothes during Goodbye. The band stops playing and Frank keeps singing. When the song ends, Carl is STILL there - because he’s still right: even after this, Frank doesn’t get to end the show.

i keep seeing people say "oh eddie would be x in a modern au" "eddie would be y in a modern au" and im ???

a modern day eddie would still be a metalhead dnd player who's probably read the LoTR triology more than once; he'd just also own all the movies and know a bunch of useless trivia about the actual filming and production.

he'd probably still be a drug dealer, still gets held back a year in high school, probably has a second hand phone with a cracked screen that he only uses to listen to music, skips class because his teachers don't like him, runs a dnd club either in the drama room or the art room, either forges notes to get out of phys ed or just doesn't show up, he strikes me as someone who enjoys the process of burning music onto cd's so he probably has a bunch of mixtapes in his glove box and steve would hate driving with him bc his car wouldn't have an AUX port or anything so he'd either have to listen to the radio or eddie's music

a modern day eddie would still be eddie, he'd just have the luck of getting to experience all the nerdy shit that comes out after the 80's and also modern technology
