Hi this may divert from my usual content, but as someone with a platform like this I need to speak up about this.
The Philippines-China maritime dispute has been going on for years now, but lately the tensions had been getting more and more worse to the point it’s super concerning now.
Here’s a bit of a history lesson: China claims that the West Philippine Sea is theirs because of the nine-dash line, but the Permanent Court of Arbitration in the Hague ruled in 2016 that that had no basis under international law. Other than that, the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) said that China’s historic rights on the territory no longer exists. So basically, the West Philippine Sea belongs to the Philippines.
However, China rejects that decision. They have harassed, intimidated, and even used armed conflict on our vessels. China Coast Guard (CCG) vessels had even used a water cannon against our ships TWICE, in which one incident resulted to getting seven Navy personnel wounded.
Worse, there are also allegations of a spy being planted here. Alice Guo, one of the mayors in Tarlac (a city in the Philippines) had mysteriously risen to power despite having no prior experience or connections whatsoever. Literally no one even knew her in her town. She just claims to live in a simple farm. However, she owns a luxury sports car and a helicopter. And somehow, everything regarding her past is inconsistent; she doesn’t know what her mother’s name was, who she grew up with, no school documents, hell she didn’t even have a birth certificate up until she was 17 years old. This was all brought up because she was involved in the criminal activities (like human trafficking, scams, etc.) of the Philippine Offshore Gaming Operator (POGO) which also has the Chinese involved.
The US has also been taking advantage of the situation by deploying 9 EDCA sites (military bases) for a supposed military pact, but former US Marine Intelligence Officer Scott Ritter has admitted to using the Philippines as a tool to gain leverage over the Chinese.
What has our government done regarding this dispute? They’re too busy infighting to focus on the bigger picture and on how to settle on an agreement with China.
I just want to take the time to speak up and make people more aware about the ongoing dispute. I know that this has been going on for several years now, but my memory and knowledge about the topic may be a bit wonky so I apologize in advance if I had said anything wrong. You can add more information regarding this or correct the information that I've given if I phrased things wrong.
Regardless, I do know one thing: the West Philippine Sea is ours.

Ghoul Worldbuilding Headcanons:
Ghoul kitchens are always clean. Very few ghouls actually cook to begin with, which makes most of their kitchen indefinitely clean. And all of them can’t afford to leave evidence of their meals, so they clean up immediately.
Because of this, ghouls are commonly known as very tidy people among their human friends.
Koalas and Panda Bears are common favorite animals (or at least, animals of heavy interest) among ghouls for the fact that they also live on a single food source (albeit both plants — eucalyptus and bamboo)
Carnivorous animals that get demonized as “eating machines” like Sharks are also common favorite animals / animals of interest
Because of this, a lot of ghouls take interest in animals and want to go into a work field of either studying or working with animals. (If you can't work against the demonization of your own species, might as well work on helping other species!)
Given that Hide can keep Cain’s mouth shut in the novels to make him swallow human food, what if ghouls are like crocodiles and alligators? Incredible bite strength, but the muscle that opens their mouths is really weak.
Acting human requires a lot of suppression, far beyond what canon covers. Think about it: They have to ignore the scents they smell, everything they overhear, keep their strength and agility in check, avoid dangerous objects because they can't be harmed by it. And they have to guess and estimate all these limits, because they can't just ask. They even have to play dumb and fearful about knowledge of their own species, as public knowledge on ghouls and even the CCG is very low.
And it requires a lot of supplementation, too. They have to catch up on the importance of food in human culture, from favorite foods to grocery shopping. And be able to recognize the variety of human food, and pay attention to and prepared for common eating times. They've probably never experienced a true human restaurant besides coffee shops. They also have to make up family history since most ghouls are orphans, and stick to a single believable backstory.
Given that the CCG take ghoul bodies after killing them and turn them into quinques, having a body at all is a big deal amongst ghouls, and in recent history makes their death ceremonies not entirely unlike humans'
Having a real disconnect when it comes to the blood and gore side of horror. They can tell its meant to be terrifying and disgusting, but it gives them the complete opposite reaction. Which could either be really fun and enjoyable, or the source of alienation and guilt, depending on the ghoul
Whether its through chemosignals or simply overhearing heartbeats, ghouls can sense fear
(And lying too, probably)
If they can sense chemosignals, then that would make communicating through masks easier for them, as they don't need to read each other's expressions to tell emotions
Cats don't just purr from contentment, but also often purr when stressed, and there's a theory that cat purring aids in healing, which feels really ripe for worldbuilding considering that ghouls have regeneration. Maybe they go hand-in-hand — purring whenever their regeneration kicks in, or maybe they tend to purr when their regeneration gives out — instinctually using a more primative form of healing
(The theory also says that cat purring can lower stress and aid healing in humans too, so consider that for your ghoul x human ships! It wouldn't be an enhanced form of healing for humans, but it would still be comforting and have minor healing properties like the cat purring theory!)
Ghouls' eyes glow. Their kakugan glowing is pretty accepted as canon, but what if even their "normal" eyes glow too?
(Examples of :re Donato because I thought it was cool)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also bonus headcanon for this specific scene: Donato really likes to sit in the dark and let his eyes glow creepily, just another fun little way to freak out cochlea's doves. But they quickly caught on to this and started keep the lights on. As Donato's friend, Haise's the only one who lets him sit in the dark during interrogations anymore. Enrichment :)

Let's discuss: Queerness in Tokyo Ghoul!
To start off, I just want to mention that these are things I have noticed. Nothing is necessarily canon (or non canon) but it's something I'm very interested in. I've been learning a lot in the queer horror club I'm in and it's been really fun dissecting Tokyo Ghoul in the same way!
This will go character to character. It's not going to be a complete list as there's SO much to cover but...
Kaneki: Not to state the obvious but his friendship with Hide surpasses a Lot of what heteronormativity usually allows. I don't think he's even fully aware of his attraction until after he meets Touka. Because Hide had been such a permanent fixture in his life growing up, they never really had ever been apart. Their bond is deep and strong and definitely can be looked at from an extremely queer perspective. (I'm not trying to say that all men who show affection to one another are queer because that is simply not true.) Once he becomes a ghoul and he has that separation from Hide, I think that is when his sexuality is fully recognized. Especially in the manga, his bond with Hide runs deeper than with almost every other character. I'd say the exception to that rule is Touka in :re. In the manga during the death kiss, he didn't even know if Hide was real or not. He was in such a state of disorientation and confusion but Hide was still the one that he saw. Of course, Hide was actually there with him. But because Kaneki was in such a delirious state, surely he could have hallucinated the death kiss to be with Touka? Or anyone else? Why specifically did Hide come to mind during that time? Again, he was in a moment of crisis and Hide had always been that stability for him but it's just curious to think about...
Hide: I've seen and read so many different rumours about how Sui Ishida intended for Hide to be canonically bisexual. However, I can't find that interview or confession ANYWHERE in a way that makes it clear that Sui Ishida actually said that so we will disregard that for now. Setting that aside, Hide has a very intriguing point of view of Kaneki. His insight on Kaneki's life is the closest we get to an outside perspective of Kaneki's behaviour from an intimate view. Obviously we see other ghouls, CCG members, etc. studying the way Kaneki behaves but we never see it in the same way that we do with Hide. That boy has been taking notes on Kaneki since he first started acting odd. He caught onto Kaneki being a ghoul with ease (ofc this depends on the version as well. We are ignoring the live action version because it screws up the source material.) No matter how hard Kaneki tried, he could not get Hide to stop caring and stop observing. Hide went undercover in both the CCG and ghoul world to make sure Kaneki was okay. His life centred around Kaneki. That in itself is a confession of love and not in the platonic way.
Uta: Setting aside the way he looks at Renji for a moment, his entire being breaks the norms which is what queerness and queer history has always been. Uta quite literally makes masks so ghouls can create a whole other identity surrounding their otherness. His entire presence screams queer-coded.
Tsukiyama: I don't think I need to explain this one much tbh but his obsession with Kaneki cannot be overlooked. It is obviously super creepy in a lot of way and he crosses a TON of boundaries. However, that level of obsession is definitely not in a "you're my guy pal, let's go lift weights at the gym" (idk what cishet men do I'm sorry). His fascination with both the male and female ghouls feels very queer to me even though it is to an extreme that needs to be observed and dissected with caution.
Nico: He is the embodiment of a gay stereotype. Obviously not all rep is good rep but he definitely fits the mold and he is definitely queer, no doubt about it.
Mutsuki: Without a doubt, he is trans. Many people argue "oh he only transitioned so he could become a Quinx Squad member and change his identity better blah blah blah." HOWEVER. I raise you: once Urie found out his assigned gender at birth, why did he feel so deeply uncomfortable? Obviously, he was worried that Urie would tell everyone and their mom but even after Urie kept that a secret, he was still nervous. It's almost like he didn't want to be treated differently because of his assigned gender at birth and transition... There is a lot about Mutsuki that could have been handled better but I also think that him keeping his preferred name, pronouns, etc. is so important. Not once did Urie question it, he just wanted Mutsuki to keep doing his job well. Mutsuki is a very complex character and you can dissect his storyline from a million povs but I think first and foremost that he is trans and that there isn't really a question as to whether or not he wants to be referred to as a man or not
Overall, all these characters are only a small part of an even LARGER queer analogy! Tokyo Ghoul is about a man learning to grapple with being both ghoul AND human. Taking this into account, a ton of queer people have to be worried about being 'found out' or 'outed' because we live in a world where it is dangerous for queer people to exist still (much like it is dangerous for ghouls to exist). Kaneki is coming to terms with the fact that he might not be fully human (or the societal norm). Learning to deal with that, especially when you feel like you're the first EVER because you have no prior experience or relationships with other members of the LGBTQ+ community is terrifying! That feeling of 'otherness' or 'monstrosity' is unfortunately something a lot of queer folks have to go through. The CCG has a very religious/governmental parallel to it and could even be used as a metaphor for the hate that queer people receive from institutions that benefit from our suffering. However, Akira AND Amon both empathize with Takizawa eventually and are subject to abuse and rejection because they love and care about someone in the 'other' community. Haise's transition and morphing with Kaneki is a beautiful metaphor for how many queer people will try to be 'normal' or conform to society for protection but you always kind of know your identity is there. As mentioned earlier, Uta makes masks for other ghouls so they can create a separate identity to protect themselves when trying to exist. That feeling of two separate identities, two separate worlds that you think cannot combine is SO common in the queer community. Kaneki feeling like he isn't enough of ghoul OR human to fit into the world at all is often how queer people are treated too. Being told you're not enough of something and being rejected by communities who allegedly were there to protect you. To conclude, I'd like to say thank you for reading all this (if you did) and also feel free to add on, debate, or include things I'm missing! Also I wrote this very very sleep deprived so I'm sorry about my grammar. Okay goodnight oomfies

Chapter 1: Remit to see, limit to see—Remind
Tumblr media
previous chapter  masterlist next chapter
Tumblr media
"Mornin boys, I'll be your escort today." Reina saluted them as they walked out the front door.
She wore a white button up blouse, leaving the first few unbuttoned to show off a good chunk of her cleavage. A coffee colored skirt that hugged her thighs, and her signature 3'' heels. She decided to forego the white coat with something more fashionable—a long beige coat that covered most of her from head to toe. Her hair tied up in a high ponytail.
Shirazu greeted her with a big smile and started to chat with her, but Urie on the other hand wasn't amused. In fact he was annoyed, but at least she was better than their other useless mentor—Haise Sasaki.
He rolled his eyes and walked away from both of them.
"Sorry to interrupt, 'razu, but Urie's leaving without us." She motioned with her thumb that he was at least a good foot away from them.
Quickly apologizing, the blonde boy scurried to catch up to the other boy and whined about how heartless he was for leaving without them. The purple haired boy remained quiet and didn't say a word and instead just kept walking.
Walking behind them she admired the scene in front of her, reminding her of the good times she had with her older sister before they started drifting apart. A small smile was etched on her face.
Tumblr media
As they arrived at the warehouse the trio was met with an investigator.
"Aki—I mean Investigator Mado! I came to escort the boys to get their back up quinques." She bowed.
"Investigator Nakou, good to see that you're cleaning up your act. Good to see you too, investigators Urie and Shirazu." She nodded their way.
"Hey, I don't like what you're implying, Mado!" The lilac haired woman argued but sighed in defeat knowing it was true.
During the past few days she's been stepping up and acting more like a mentor than before. But she had yet to drop the facade she'd put up since she entered the CCG as mentioned after Akira spoke to her directly—though she had reason as to why she wanted to sell herself as the dumb-good-for-nothing-bimbo.
"Any progress with the case?" Mado ignored the whining woman and proceeded to converse with the two boys.
Shirazu beamed at the acknowledgement meanwhile Urie just answered her question—annoyed by all the small talk getting in the way of what they were originally came here for.
Tumblr media
"A plain Tsunagi." Akira motioned as they were handed their quinque.
"That's so boring." Reina nagged.
"They're backups, and they're still as good as your own quinque."
"You mean Widow? My baby glides through everything so smoothly, I doubt these can be as good as Widow. Can't wait till you both get your own!" She turned to the boys and patted them on their shoulders.
"You two, don't neglect your quinques just because you can use a kagune. The quinque is an anti-ghoul weapon developed by former general chairman Yoshiu Washu—the father of General Chairman Tsuneyoshi Washu, in partnership with the German Bureau Chief Adam Gehenna." Akira went on,
"The CCG engaged ghouls with firearms back then but were ineffective against a ghouls' kagune. Research into an alternative weapon gave birth to the idea of using their own kagune against them—manufactured weapons based on a kagune. Quinques.”
Reina shifted from side to side seemingly uninterested with the topic at hand. She ended up zoning out in between the woman's history lesson on how they came to be.
"A soldier with a built-in quinque, if you will. That is what you Quinxes are. But, even with that ability—you are not ghouls. There are limits to a Quinx's ability." Akira turned to face them all,
"You've never seen Sasaki fight at his best, have you?" She asked.
Both males shook their heads at the higher up, meanwhile Reina just smirked at her question.
"No. But he uses a quinque very skillfully. There's much I can learn from him." Urie reluctantly complimented his useless mentor.
"Well if you both want to know, he's an interesting fighter. He uses techniques he's learned from the CCG until-"
"I think that's enough of that." Akria gave her a pointed look, meaning she's crossing a line that shouldn't be crossed.
"I didn't say anything." Reina giggled and surrendered.
The boys just looked confused as to what was going on between both their mentors. Urie though understood that Reina held a lot more information than she led on. Just how much did she know about Haise Sasaki?
Turning back to the boys, Akira told them to always use their quinques and bid them goodbye.
"Let's get going. I know you both want to go find Torso—and I know you both have a lead on him." She crossed her arms across her chest.
Her face was uninterested as she told them. Immediately Shirazu tried to deny her claim, but quickly came to find out that he was a horrible liar. She could clearly see through him and it didn't help that Urie's usual poker face was falling apart. Veins littering his forehead indicating he was upset at being caught. How foolish could he be thinking that he could get away with such information.
"So you mind telling me your lead or should I tell Haise about this little scheme you have?"
Tumblr media
"I think you might wanna speed up if we wanna catch up with them!" Reina yelled, gripping on to Urie's waist so as to not fall off Shirazu's motorcycle.
The three of them piled onto the vehicle, while both boys wore protective gear in case of an accident, Reina wore none at all seeing as she was not involved in the original plan to capture and eradicate Torso. Urie inevitably squished between the blonde boy and lilac haired girl.
"Karao Saeki!" Shirazu yelled.
Behind him Urie urged the same message realizing that they had no chance unless they did so. The blonde concerned about breaking the law hesitated to do so until both of them yelled at him to hurry up. The cab in front of them waved side to side in an attempt to avoid oncoming traffic.
Quickly Urie realized they could have an advantage if a certain person had the capability to do so.
"Take out the tires with your kagune!"
"Are you serious?!"
Looking behind him he saw that the purple haired boy was serious about his idea. Groaning at the plan he did so but warned him that if he missed they weren't to blame him
Swiftly pushing on the gas pedal the blonde released his ukaku. It branched out, spikes formed threatening to detach themselves from their place. Attempting his best at aiming at the cab he released three missiles continuously all imploding as they missed the cab.
Groaning at his incompetence, Urie jabbed at his horrible aim, but Shirazu just threatened to knock him off the bike.
"Could you both shut up and concentrate on the task at hand?!" The forgotten girl scolded the arguing duo.
At this point they were noticed by the cops and were told to pull over. Taking this as an opportunity to alert the cops of the upcoming danger Reina looked behind her and motioned her hand in an upward direction. As if getting the memo immediately the cop car sacrificed itself and pulled up by the cab attempting to tell them to pull over .
But in doing so—Torso—ripped their faces off with his kagune and flung them through the window to dispose of them. With no driver to maneuver the vehicle around it slammed into the wall of the tunnel they drove into. Just as Torso thought he had escaped law enforcement officials, the end of the tunnel was blocked off with a few barricades and cop cars surrounding them.
The cab came to a stop and the drivers door opened revealing a thin, half-naked man with his shirt wrapped around his face in an attempt to keep his identity anonymous. Hopping off the bike they all assumed a stance, not even a few seconds later Torso released his kagune and struck at the trio.
Unsurprised they dodged his attack and moved aside letting the expensive bike take the hit. Regaining his composure quickly, Shirazu released his ukaku and launched his projectiles towards the "masked" man. Shocked, the man was glued to the ground which left him to be the perfect target for the Quinxes onslaught.
They made quick work of him until a new obstacle made themself known to the trio. A masked person in a coat walked out of the shadows, their kagune ready to strike at anyone that gets in their way.
"I'm sorry but that scrawny half-naked guy is ours. You guys are Quinxes right? You use a kagune, right? You Doves make me downright sick. You're no different from Aogiri." The clearly distorted voice echoed throughout their ears.
A sense of familiarity struck the girl. That bikaku, that tone of voice—she swore she heard it from somewhere.
"And now that you've made me sick... I wanna have some." He snapped his head up eyes piercing through the mask,
"Nish-" Reina was interrupted with a strike thrown her way. She backed up and instinctively hid behind the abandoned cars.
Decidedly done with her he switched opponents, Torso long gone from the battlefield. Rate: S Orochi was now the main target. He dashed past the girl and swung his leg into Urie's gut—sending him flying into the wall of the ditch. The boy coughed up blood from the sheer force of the kick to his abdomen.
"Sorry, but I don't hold back against Doves. You'll get in my way one of these days. Better to nip you guys in the bud when I can." He sneered as he neared the bloodied up boy. Behind him Shirazu snuck up behind him and released a few missiles his way thinking they'd absolutely obliterate the masked man.
"What was that? A pea-shooter?" He mocked the blonde boy as he simply dodged them.
Both boys quickly got fed up with all his taunting. Wanting to get this over with, they came at him with all they've got. They swung their kagune and attempted to strike him, but all that came was more frustration. They jumped and leapt from place to place destroying more and more of their surroundings.
He kicked Urie down to the ground, his kokaku shattered and destroyed. He sat down on top of the destroyed cars and looked down at the furious boy, mocking him.
"That's it? For a kokaku? All it took was a kick? Guess it's an imitation after all." He chuckled.
The sound of footsteps could be heard growing louder and louder as they neared—Shirazu. He quickly took a stance and swiped at him releasing his missiles a dust cloud quickly forming not allowing them to see the extent of how much damage the blondes kagune actually did to the ghoul.
Once it cleared away he was left unscathed. Realizing they didn't have a chance to exterminate the Rate: S Ghoul Shirazu opted to retreat until backup came, not wanting to risk his life for something he knew they couldn't handle yet. Angry at his words Urie didn't relent, but instead tried to push forward. His method of keeping alive—self cannibalism.
He dug his teeth into the flesh of his forearm, the sound of squelching and the aroma of blood overwhelmed his senses. Reina looked his way, the smell of blood enticing her to take a bite of him. She shook her head and walked towards them.
"Hey four eyes! Seeing as they're useless, how about we have a match of our own?" She yelled out, a smirk creeping up her lips.
The ghoul turned around and looked at her,
"What's a bimbo like you doing in the CCG?"
"Still judging others based on their looks, Nishi? How about I remind you how strong me and my sister were when we kicked your ass."
She released her rinkaku, purple like tentacles reached out in front of her and in the blink of an eye they cleanly cut his hand off. She sighed and rubbed the bridge of her nose.
"Shit, I'm getting rusty. I meant to go for your whole arm. Luckily I got the other one though." She mumbled as she waved it around in her hand.
Her squad looked at her in awe and fear, the sheer speed and talent to distract someone was a talent to have at this point. They looked back at his figure and noticed that he was regenerating at a quick pace. His thick bikaku swayed back and forth before it readied to strike her until a quinque split it in half. She dissolved her kagune and watched the back up she called come to their aid.
"Sasan!!"
"Sir!"
"Who the hell are you? The king of the imitators?"
"Mutsuki, contact Investigator Mado.”
The man didn't respond to his taunting voice and instead went to attack the ghoul without a second thought. He uttered a word in between every attack and dedicated each attack with his heart—thinking about his squad with each swing of his sword. The Rate S ghoul eventually caught up to his attacks and gave him a taste of what he was like.
The ghoul muscled him in the gut like when he did so with Urie a few moments ago. Haise doubled over and screamed in pain, his quinque out of reach, probably somewhere behind him. He stayed there for a while until he rose to his feet, raising his right hand—he cracked his pointer finger, the same crack released his kagune.
In an instant Haise's demeanor changed. No longer was he the looked down upon investigator, but rather a strong, intimidating man. Just as the ghoul tried to attack Haise, he moved out the way like this wasn't the first time he engaged in a fight with a high rated ghoul. This was the first time the squad saw their mentor use his kagune at all.
He skillfully jumped and leapt away whilst keeping up with his attacks against the masked ghoul. Within a few seconds Haise had shattered the ghoul's kagune, and though it regenerated almost instantly, it was still a major feat for them.
"You're— tough." Haise gritted through his teeth just as Orochi approached him face to face,
"Well, thank you." He kicked Haise in the gut just like before, but this time Haise regained his composure in an instant and his kagune reached out to grab his quinque and it settled in the palm of his hands.
The squad noticed that he was depleting in stamina, his dodging time slowing down to the point where he was dodging the attacks just in the nick of time. When Orochi struck him again he fell to the floor, immediately coming to his aid the squad reached out for him but he put his arm out.
"Stay back-"
"We can still fight!"
"We're not just gonna stand here and watch-" they protested, but all Haise did was look back and grin at them.
"That's an order. Reina, help me would ya?" He motioned.
Grinning from ear to ear she slid her coat off her back and let it fall to the floor. She released her kagune, long, thick, deep purple tentacles following behind her as Haise stretched before going back to attack the Rate S ghoul.
"You definitely intrigue me more than those punks." The masked ghoul hummed.
Haise chuckled, "I'm not sure if I should be honored. But I don't think you want to get to know... me." He cracked his knuckle and attacked him without a warning.
Haise showed no mercy, his actions were a lot more fluid and natural, his instincts told him what was right and what was wrong. When Orochi leapt away from Haise's attack, Reina formed her kagune into thin, razor sharp arms and pinned him into place... like a spider with their prey. They pierced through his skin, his shoulders and hips; the areas bled profusely.
This gave Haise the perfect opportunity to pierce Orochi's abdomen like before. Haise didn't have any reaction, he just looked concentrated as his hand contorted as if it was the one controlling his every move. That was until his second tentacle pierced through another part of his torso. Haise began grinning from ear to ear as he continued his onslaught of torturing the ghoul. Painful groans along with squelching noises could be heard from the pinned body.
"Just returning the favor.." he smiled manically, clearly enjoying this little show of theirs.
Removing his kagune from the ghoul's abdomen Reina shoved and grated the masked ghoul into the wall of the tunnel. When she let go he dropped to the floor like a rag doll incapable of moving himself around.
Pushing themselves off their kagune they reached the now unmasked ghoul. The girl picked up the mask and hid it behind her, meanwhile the boy straddled him and looked like he was going to give him the easy way out.
"'I'm dying I'm dying...' is that how it goes?" He coughed out as he laid on the street
The duo paid no attention to his words.
"Oh buddy, guess you still haven't found salvation, huh... Kaneki." He revealed his face from underneath the hood he had on.
That familiar face... orange hair..
"...nishio..?" Haise slipped out.
Haise lost his mind. Memories distorted, blank faces haunting him, mouths moving but no sound coming from them. The only sound he could hear was his name ringing in his mind... Kaneki.
"Guess playtime's over Nishio, take care." She said as she tossed him his mask.
Walking over to Haise she hugged him, her kagune shattering his. She held him as he thrashed around her hold, her grip never letting loose. His nails dug into her skin drawing blood from the scratches, his screams and wails echoed throughout everyone's ears. The pain he inflicted onto her was nothing compared to his.
Memories of her hugging her restrained sister filled her head. She called out her fathers name, her name, she seeked comfort from those she trusted. Haise in return had no one to tell him to cry it out, to let him feel. No one but himself, and not having anyone to remember them by was a greater pain none of them would ever understand.
She took his hits, his scratches, until they ceased into small cries. The RC bullet put him to rest for a while. They both collapsed onto the floor as he muttered his name, Haise Sasaki, over and over again. Looking down at him, Reina brushed his hair aside in a comforting manner hoping he'd find comfort in it as it was the only thing she could do at the moment with all eyes on them.
Although he still clawed at her, the pain was much more manageable. She ran thimble fingers throughout his full head of hair and nodded at his words. "You're you," she caressed his face with her free hand, wiping his free flowing tears. She noticed her subordinates looking at them... fear... jealousy... and awe was clear on their faces. She felt his hand grasp her wrist, she looked down. He looked into her eyes and was about to speak up—almost expecting his words she reassured him,
"You didn't kill anyone, don't worry. We're all safe. Get some rest now, Haise."
And with those words of reassurance he closed his weary eyes. A deep slumber falling upon him. Sighing in relief Reina picked the man up with ease and carried him into one of the cars their back up came with. Closing the car door she went to pick up her discarded coat on the floor and threw it over herself.
"We're riding elsewhere, I'm driving."
"Will Sasan be okay?" They mumbled out.
"Of course he will. He always bounces back." She smiled back at them before she entered the escorted car.

A/n: I haven't read the Tokyo Ghoul manga in like ages so if this took long know that I was just refreshing my memory 😅 anyways Hide deserves the world and also more people need to write about him (myself included) so if you have any requests, send them. Hope you like it 😘 also I made some changes here and there but it's okay because I can't fuck it up more than the anime did. Hopefully you wanted the Raid of Kanou's Lab and not the Third Cochlea Raid but if you didn't, I can gladly make it a two parter.
Pairing: Hideyoshi Nagachika x reader
Summary: Hide has been hiding things from you and when he actually comes to reveal them, you're not sure you can let him go
Trigger warnings: mentions of death
Tumblr media
Something was wrong with Hide. It wasn't obvious but you knew him well and you were pretty sure that he knew that too. He had gotten a new job at the CCG as a part-time staff assistant. What that meant you didn't know but all of a sudden the dates between the two of you were not as frequent, no more sleep overs and most definitely no hanging out at his place.
If you didn't know Hide, you would have thought he was cheating on you but there was simply no way this ball of sunshine would ever do something like that. So you did nothing other than making sure that he was eating and sleeping properly. Not spending time with him made you feel bad for sure but you assumed he was getting accustomed to this new life without Kaneki so you just wanted to give him time and space, confident that he would confide in you if he wasn't doing well.
With you being a history major and him studying Foreign Languaged Studies there had often been times when he would help you with a few classes here and there, mostly when it came to translation of a few passages. And tonight had been no different. You had asked him a week prior to arrange this small study date just to be sure that it would not overlap with his part-time job.
But here you were, watching the news, books scattered all over the place and Hide was still not there. Two hours. He was supposed to be there two hours ago. You had called him almost ten times and sent countless of texts yet he hadn't answered to any of them even though you could see he was active.
And then there was a knock on your door. Lowering the volume of the television, you stood up before heading to open. Hide pulled you in a tight hug before you could even say anything.
"Sorry I'm late." He walked inside with his usual smile even though this time you could see it was somewhat forced.
"What is this bag for?" You pointed at the black backpack he set on the floor before removing his shoes.
His first instinct was to raise his hand to his chin and that was when he gave himself away. You saw him looking behind your shoulder, at the television. "Ah it's all over the news..." He mumbled and took your hand.
It didn't take you long enough to understand what he meant, where he was going or what he had come to your place for. It took you mere seconds.
"No..." You stared at him, eyes starting to water. "Don't do this to me."
"Shhh..." He hugged you again, his left hand rubbing circles on your back as his right one held your head in place against his chest. "Nothing will happen. Marude told me that people in the position I will be in rarely die." He laughed. "And you know me... nothing bad is going to happen."
"You don't know that." By that time you were full on crying and Hide was trying his best to calm you down by placing soft kisses on the top of your head.
"But I do." He chuckled. He was glad that your face was buried in his chest and you couldn't see the tears rolling down on his cheeks. "I might be a little late but I'll come here after the whole thing is done. We haven't slept together in a long time."
"Promise?"
"Do I even need to say it? Of course I promise. I will come back here and we'll spend the entire night together, or day it depends on when I will return." He giggled.
Hide returned two years later.

Urie for the character ask :3
AJOWOEWPRKOWOEKDKEK yes i’m normal about him
My first impression: i didn’t like any of the quinx squad but i think i liked him slightly more than the others
My impression now: yeah i love him so much he’s an asshole sometimes but i love him also he’s just like me fr (is that a problem)
Favorite thing about that character: he’s such an asshole and i love him. i think he’s a really good picture of someone who puts too much pressure on themself to be the best i have a thing for characters like that i guess
Least favorite thing: i’m trying so hard to think of something…i would always want to see more of him ofc, and in the anime his story was kinda skimmed over if yk what i mean? like i felt there were gaps in his development in the manga too but the whole ending of re was rushed so i don’t complain too much. but in the anime? there’s like minimal sign of discontent until the coup against furuta. and in the manga i loved that he and saiko visited the chateau in the epilogue but the manga makes it seem like they never talked again.
Favorite line/scene: the “we’ll just become terrorists” line
Favorite interaction that character has with another:
Tumblr media
for a while urie was really angry with haise for leaving the squad especially after shirazu’s death, but i think this moment showed urie making peace with what happened and understanding of kaneki, as well as accepting peace with the ghouls and rejecting what the ccg had him thinking
A character that I wish that character would interact with more: kaneki and kuroiwa. i want to see him make peace with his past and himself so bad :(
Another character from another fandom that reminds me of that character: i thought of this while i was writing this, as i said i have a type, i love to see a character who puts too much pressure on themself so for that reason i will compare him to mello. both my fav characters from their respective medias, both yearning to be the best, working so hard, and facing the mental consequences. burning rage. ugh theyre so me…
A headcanon about that character: yall know i think about this man daily. i think he really likes studying random things, like stuff like history, philosophy, poetry. more than people may think, he’s an academic at heart (not projection..). he loves reading but don’t tell sasaki
A song that reminds of that character: bullet with butterfly wings by the smashing pumpkins
An unpopular opinion about that character: sometimes i think my unpopular opinion is that i like him at all ☹️ yall just dont get him no one gets him like i do.
Favorite picture:

I think it would have been cool to see other ghouls around the world, and how they go about their existences in whatever place they live in (The Washuu and Rosewald families' respective places of origin were only mentioned in passing, and that's only two places). Subsequently, how humans there also go about having precautions and countermeasures against ghouls. The history of ghouls around the world would have been interesting as well, because they have super strength and kagune. Maybe they were worshipped as deities in some places? Were they involved in historic events? Also, I wonder how human society progressed with technology so well, despite ghouls supposedly being in their midst for all of their existence? Like, you think they might have preemptively tried stopping their food from gaining the upper hand? Just speculating, sorry to bombard your inbox.
Oh I love this. No worries about the long rant! I absolutely think you're correct in all your theorizing, it'd be awesome if there were one or two infamous incidents where a ghoul attempted to sabotage an advancement in society or, even more confusingly was discovered to be a ghoul after helping make some significant discovery, leading to controversy and suspicion around that development. We know the CCG has reach into at least one other country (Germany) and we know that V has reach all over, so I imagine the hatred of ghouls is a rather widely-accepted ideology (and not incomprehensibly, they are humanity's natural hunter in this universe) or at least it is in the modern universe. If the hatred of ghouls is something that was spread with travel and they were originally revered in some areas that would actually just further the weird minority allegory. Anyways, sorry this took me a bit to get to, thank you for the thoughts anon.

Hey dude! I was just wondering, with all the worldbuilding you do, do you have any tokyo ghoul ocs of your own?
I do! @fawntastic (who I made these ocs with) did a drawing of them here and I’ll put details under the cut because i have brain rot
First is Arlen Cain
Tumblr media
He’s 6’0, 42 years old, ex Mormon, and seemingly a normal, if a little too straight laced, associate special class investigator in the Las Vegas branch of the CCG. The story he tells people is that he lived a normal life until a ghoul broke into his house and killed his family, which prompted him to become an investigator and attempt to hunt down the ghoul known as the Shrike who was believed to be the one that killed them. He has a reputation as a kind and hardworking man who is popular with his coworkers and impressive in his ghoul killing skills. However this is a carefully cultivated facade. In reality, the abuse and repression from his family had him on thin ice when he met a ghoul he fell in love with, and they killed and ate his family together. From the beginning he was working at the CCG to have an inside advantage in keeping his husband safe and has a long history of killing any partners who get too close to figuring them out. Between being raised in a cult, an affinity for cannibalism, and the increasing ease with which he kills other CCG employees, he has something so very wrong with him. He loves his family but everyone else is fair game and he doesn’t much care for human life
Next is Leonard Cain
Tumblr media
He’s 5’0, somewhere in his late 30s, known to the CCG as the SS ranked Shrike and extremely off putting. He was born in tokyo, and lived on the streets as he never had a human identity. He moved from gang to gang to avoid being exterminated but became too high priority for the doves after he killed a senior investigator. So as not to endanger more people by staying in groups of other ghouls, he stowed away in a shipping container and ended up in bullshit nowhere Utah, where he met Arlen. He ended up falling for him after enough of his clumsy attempts at communicating with him despite knowing he wasn’t human, and after killing his family with him per his request, he stuck around and eventually married him. He worked several jobs as a bouncer before eventually settling into one at a casino his adopted son’s distant family owned, and since he says maybe 5 words a day and can’t make a normal amount of eye contact to save his life people mostly leave him alone. He has a reputation with the CCG for hunting with long Ukaku sharks by hand and staying on buildings or in trees
Then there’s Angela Kazmarik
Tumblr media
She is 5’9, 33, a moderately strong kakuja known as The Plague Doctor and was only weeks away from getting her doctorate before she was outed as a ghoul. She was orphaned when she was young and to survive she stalked a notoriously bad foster home until one of the kids was killed, and quickly ate the body and took her place before the death could ever be reported. She was incredibly clever and skyrocketed through grades, eventually getting a full scholarship to an accelerated medical program. Her goal was always to find a way to allow ghouls to eat non-human meat food, but was discovered before she graduated and has been in hiding since. She lives with the Cains as she’s been a long time friend ever since she met Leonard while hunting and just refused to leave, and continues her work in secret. She funds it by doing questionable art commissions online and steals medical equipment. She’s become oddly obsessed with investigator Vivienne Mallory, makes massive shows of killing doves, and is all around a theatrical nuisance who is unfortunately able to get away with her cringe ass performances because she is horrifically strong. She’s no stranger to cruel and unusual methods of slaughter and her victims are often found uneaten but missing organs
Next is Ahiga Cain
Tumblr media
He is 6’8, 16, an SSS rated kakujas known as Roadkill and an absolute horror show of a ghoul. As far as anyone knows, he’s a living fossil, the last surviving ghoul from a bygone era that was never meant to survive this long and who both humans and ghouls find deeply upsetting. He’s a southwestern American subspecies once known as the N’daga Hasteen, but is currently referred to as the Cave Ghoul thanks to fossil records of creatures like him and the CCGs reluctance to publicly admit that a ghoul with adaptations meant for hunting megafauna and mimicking human voices is still out there. He was born deep in the Grand Canyon where his mother was hiding him, and he lived there for only three years before the CCG launched a massive raid to kill her. She bought him time to escape, but he could only flee so far, and was found by Arlen hiding behind a dumpster. Thankfully for him Arlen reported him as a human child found captured by a ghoul and adopted him. Human Friends of his mother who were part of the tribe his family came from confirmed the story, and he’s lived with his dads and sister since. He grew close to them and spent several years living peacefully, but after being targeted by gourmet ghouls who wanted a piece of the last Cave ghoul, he and his sister began hunting and fighting against the CCG. Becoming a kakuja came naturally to him, and the CCG was completely unprepared to handle Cave Ghoul fighting abilities. He amassed a gang which has become quite a problem for the doves, and hopes to eventually be followed out of loyalty rather than fear that he’s well aware he instills in people. He is an apex predator, and despite his desire to be likable, he needs to be dangerous right now, even to the point of kakuja induced chronic illness and no longer being able to pass as human. But despite being built like a sleep paralysis demon, he hopes that eventually the conflict between humans and ghouls can end and he can go back to school and focus on a somewhat normal life
Finally there’s Megan Cain
Tumblr media
Megan is 5’8, 16, avid 4chan user, and known to the CCG as the S rated Jaeger. Her mother was a friend of Arlen’s at the training academy and in the same squad as him in the Coyote King Extermination Operation that killed Ahiga’s mother. Unfortunately she was also killed in this attack, and Arlen, being her godfather, adopted her. Since she and Ahiga were both the same and and both orphaned in the same event, they became inseparable, and by the time the language barrier wasn’t an issue and they could speak each other’s languages easily, they were as close as biological twins. Being raised by a human and a ghoul and with the single weirdest subspecies still alive, she ended up very good at telling when someone is a ghoul, and with all the ghoul behaviors she’s picked up ghouls often think she’s one of them. When her brother was taken by a gourmet circle and came back changed, she was enraged by what people could get away with doing to ghouls and joined in on the war against the CCG. She was a natural with coding and machines, and she designed a lot of viruses for CCG computers and weapons for the ghouls. Her biggest job is keeping Ahiga under control. Since his kakuja is so massive, it has a mind of its own, all his brain power goes towards just keeping it alive, so she rides on it’s neck and gives it commands. Between that, and being the one who makes and equips the armor and kakuja mounted turrets, they are always together when they fight. The CCG has no idea she’s human, and if she spent as much time producing more weapons as she does bullying people on Reddit, they’d stand no chance
Again The other three OCs, Vivienne, Fawn, and Jonah, belong to @fawntastic and are part of the same universe! I’ll leave it to him if he wants to gush about them but oughhh I have so many oc thoughts I am rotating them in my mind

Episode of Bardock (2011)
Tumblr media
In 2011, Naho Oishi published a three-chapter manga entitled Dragon Ball: Episode of Bardock.  Later that same year, it was adapted into an anime short which was premiered at the Jump Festa convention.  A year later, it was released as a bonus feature in the video game Dragon Ball Z: For Kinect.  But I’m pretty sure everyone just watched it on YouTube instead, because that game sucked.
As I recall, the purpose of Episode of Bardock was to help promote a toy line that included, among other things, a Super Saiyan Bardock figure.  Between 1997 and 2013, there wasn’t a lot of new Dragon Ball content to be found, and even though 2008 saw the premiere of Yo! Son Goku and His Friends Return!, it was generally understood that this was just a nostalgia one-shot, and not a comeback for the franchise.  So around 2007-2012, there seemed to be a lot more indulgence for “what if” content.  Vegeta and Broly got Super Saiyan 3 forms in the Raging Blast games. The Dragon Ball Heroes CCG game started up around this time, and it played with a lot of what-if scenarios and forms.  And Dragon Ball Online introduced a ton of new lore set 200 years after the end of DBZ, including Trunks’ service in the Time Patrol.
So an official Super Saiyan Bardock toy probably wasn’t a big surprise at the time, although it would have been pretty surreal to see in, say, 2004.  Fans would make what-if art like that all the time, but now Toei was doing it.  That may be why they wanted an official manga and anime story to tie into the product, so that fans wouldn’t assume this was some sort of bootleg thing.
The trick is, how do you make Super Saiyan Bardock a thing?  Everyone remembers him from his classic TV Special, but he dies at the end of it.  He certainly couldn’t have turned Super Saiyan before that, or otherwise he would have changed the course of history.  So what do you do?  Naho Oishi’s answer was simple: Time Travel.
Tumblr media
The special opens with the climactic scene from Father of Goku.  Bardock’s confronting Frieza in the upper atmosphere of Planet Vegeta, and Frieza explains that he’s begun to find the Saiyans too bothersome to keep around, so he’s going to wipe them all out.  Oh, and also, he wouldn’t want to have to deal with that pesky Super Saiyan legend.
Tumblr media
So the planet explodes, and Bardock dies in the blast... and then he wakes up in bed?!  What the hell?
Tumblr media
Bardock is confused, but his benefactors have no answers for him.  Ipana (left) is the village healer, and he uses a secret ointment to heal Bardock’s injuries.  His son, Berry (right) was the one who found Bardock at the edge of the woods, and brought him back to the village for treatment.  According to Ipana, they’re on the Planet Plant.
Tumblr media
So Bardock quickly deduces that he somehow went back in time.  He’s never seen these aliens before, but he knows that Planet Vegeta used to be called “Plant” before the Saiyans conquered it from the Tuffles.  And the scenery looks just like Planet Vegeta.  On top of that, Ipana’s “secret” ointment is identical to the fluid used in the Medical Machines by Frieza’s organization.  As impossible as it sounds, Bardock has been flung into the distant past, before the Medical Machines, before the Saiyans came to this planet, before even the Tuffles arrived on this planet.
This raises several important questions, which never get answered.
1) How did Bardock go back in time? It’s implied that Frieza’s blast did it somehow, except that’s ridiculous.  Frieza destroyed all sorts of things, including everyone else on Planet Vegeta that day.  Are we saying they all went back in time too?
2) What happened to the Plantians?  Bardock has never even heard of them before, indicating that they were long gone by the time the Saiyans settled on this planet.  I always liked this little detail, because it implies that the Tuffles wiped out the Plantians at some point, much as the Saiyans destroyed the Tuffles later on.  This neatly wraps up the moral ambiguity that surrounds Tuffle lore.  Sometimes the Tuffles are presented as innocent victims of the Saiyans, and other times they’re shown to be remorseless conquerors.  Episode of Bardock suggests that there’s an uncomfortable truth somewhere in the middle.
3) Who repaired Bardock’s uniform?  It was all shredded at the start of this short.  And then it completely disintegrated as Frieza’s attack hit him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But now it’s fine.  The Plantians might have fixed it, but how would they have even managed to find all the pieces?  I’m imagining Berry combing the area with a tweezers.
4) What happened to Bardock’s psychic powers?  These are never mentioned or referenced in this short, but it’s obviously a sequel to Father of Goku, where Bardock had psychic powers.
Now, I’m not necessarily complaining about any of these things.  There’s simply no way for Bardock to investigate any of these questions.  No one, past or present, knows how this happened to Bardock, so there’s no one to ask.  I have a lot of questions about the history that played out between this era and the destruction of Planer Vegeta, but Episode of Bardock isn’t long enough to answer them.  This is just A Thing That Happened, and Bardock has to deal with it.  And part of dealing with it means he has to accept that he may never understand it.  Life’s like that sometimes.
The loss of his psychic powers is kind of annoying, but then again, the way he got the psychic powers never made a lot of sense in the first place, so losing them without explanation isn’t exactly unusual here.  You can make up a bunch of timey-wimey nonsense to rationalize it.  For example, every flashback Bardock has to the events of Father of Goku is chronologically in the future, so technically he’s still having visions of things yet to come, even if they’re just his own memories now.  So maybe he still has the psychic foresight, but it’s no longer relevant.  But that’s just me spouting fan theories.  The source material is silent about this, so I’m just going to assume that Naho Oishi quietly dropped the psychic powers because he didn’t need them for his story and he didn’t think anyone would mind.
Tumblr media
Besides, Bardock doesn’t have time to investigate his predicament, because suddenly a pair of aliens show up in a spaceship that resembles Frieza’s.  They attack the village, claiming the entire planet for their leader, Chilled, the Space Pirate.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bardock kills them both with ease.  The Plantians hail him as their savior, but Bardock refuses their gratitude, telling them that he doesn’t care if they live or die.  Then he buggers off and takes shelter in a cave.
Tumblr media
But Berry tracks him down and brings him a basket of food.  Bardock gets angry over it, but he hasn’t eaten in like, negative 3000 years, so he’s too hungry to turn down free grub.
Tumblr media
Over the next few days, Berry brings more food to Bardock, and gradually, Bardock warms up to the kid, eventually letting him get close enough to sit beside him, and Bardock even shares some of his food with him.  He even tells Berry his name, something Berry had asked about the day he woke up.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, Chilled hasn’t heard from his henchmen for ten days, so he decides to go to Planet Plant to investigate in person.
Tumblr media
He and his crew arrive posing as the Space Police, and ask about two “evil men” that might have come to this planet.  The villagers explain that Bardock killed them already, so Chilled is very interested in “thanking” him.
Tumblr media
But Berry suspects their intentions, and he goes to Bardock to warn him, and to ask him to save the villagers.
Tumblr media
Bardock tries to insist that this doesn’t concern him, but then he has flashbacks (flash-forwards?) to the time when he went to Planet Meat and found his whole crew dead at the hands of Dodoria.  And that seems to motivate him to get involved.
Tumblr media
Sure enough, Berry was right, and Chilled starts attacking the village.  You’d think he would have waited until he found out where Bardock was, but I get the sense that Chilled is a lot more impulsive than Frieza.
Tumblr media
So Bardock shows up to clean house, but when he sees Chilled he flips his shit and starts shouting “Frieza!” at him, because they basically look alike.  Chilled overpowers him, and says he has no idea what he’s babbling about.
Tumblr media
And while Bardock is realizing that Chilled must be one of Frieza’s ancestors, Berry runs up to try to help, only for Chilled to blow him away with some big ki attack.
Tumblr media
And that’s the last straw.  It takes a full minute, but Bardock gets so frustrated over his failure to stop Frieza or Chilled, and his failure to save the Saiyans or Berry, that he flips his shit and turns Super Saiyan.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, Chilled has never seen or heard of this before, so he doesn’t think it means anything.  But I think we all know where this is going.
Tumblr media
One major criticism of this special is that it just repeats the same old formula.  And to that I would respond: What did you expect?  There was a joke about “a Super Saiyan bargain sale” back in 1993.  In Dragon Ball Z.  Seriously, thirty years ago, Vegeta was griping that there were getting to be too many Super Saiyans in this show.  I mean, this is like watching an episode of Naruto and saying “They’d better not have any adolescent ninjas in this one, I’m so sick of that.”   Or turning on Spongebob and seriously getting annoyed to see the Chum Bucket.
Tumblr media
Seriously, if you’re burned out on Super Saiyans, you need to find something else to watch.  I’ve seen too many embittered fans who think that any minute now this franchise is going to ditch the Saiyan characters and focus on Launch or Yamcha or whoever.  And I’d be up for that, honestly, but it’s not going to happen.
Tumblr media
I’ve also seen Bardock fans complain that this special (along with every other presentation of the character) somehow changes or diminishes Bardock.  In their eyes, the Father of Goku special got it right, and everything that folowed-- the dub of Father of Goku, Episode of Bardock, Dragon Ball Minus, and the Broly movie-- all of that made Bardock a little different, and therefore bad.
Here’s the thing: That happens to every character who appears in more than one story.  I remember reading a fan-comic that spoofed Bardock by having all the different versions of him appear in the same space and talk to one another.  So you’d have Funimation dub Bardock talking about redemption and Minus Bardock being a loving father, etc.  And honestly, I had trouble keeping them all straight, because they’re more alike than different.  If someone made a comic like that about Batman, how many different versions of Batman do you think there would be?  Wait, I forgot, they already did one of those:
Tumblr media
Superman: The Man of Steel #37 had tons and tons of different Batmen in it, each one based on the stylings of different writers and artists from the past.  And this comic came out in 1994.  There’s been at least seven or eight new variations of Batman since then.
And the same thing is happening with Bardock.  You don’t have to like every new Bardock story, but I think it’s kind of silly to clutch your pearls whenever they add new lore like “He loves his wife” or “He doesn’t hate everything.”
Tumblr media
Where was I?  Oh, right.  So this special isn’t exactly doing anything novel, but I think it does make for a nice demonstration of what Super Saiyans are really all about.  The Saiyans define themselves as a warrior race, but without compassion for other, weaker beings, their pursuit of battle is hollow.  Bardock was doomed to fail in Father of Goku because he trusted that his enemies would always be weaker than himself, while Frieza would never betray him as long as he followed his orders.  Then he got “cursed” with the truth.  Frieza would betray the Saiyans in spite of their loyalty, and there was nothing Bardock could do to stop it.  In Episode of Bardock, history repeats itself, almost literally, and Bardock finally discovers that his passions can be applied to other people.  He can care about the Plantians and fight on their behalf, and by taking up their cause, he can discover new ways to rise to the occasion.
A lot of that gets overlooked in DBZ, because for Goku, standing up for the oppressed is kind of second nature, so there’s no chance to dwell on it.  But in Episode of Bardock, we see a character who’s an anti-hero at best, and it doesn’t take much to push him into doing the right thing.  Because what else was he going to do?  Hide in that cave and wait for Chilled to leave?  To be Saiyan is to be constantly pushed toward compassion for the weak, and those who resist that push will only suffer for their resistance.  That’s the story of Bardock.
Tumblr media
Anyway, Bardock defeats Chilled, who somehow survives long enough to escape and send a warning to his family.  “Beware of the Saiyans who turn golden.”
Tumblr media
And that brings us full circle.  Frieza wiped out the Saiyans because of the ancient warning from his ancestor, Chilled, but by destroying the Saiyans, he accidentally sent Bardock back in time, which was what caused Chilled’s death in the first place.  So it’s a nice little predestination paradox we have here.
Tumblr media
Back in the past, Berry looks like he’ll be okay...
Tumblr media
... while Bardock wanders off into the sunset.  I’m not sure where he can possibly go, since I don’t think there’s any spaceships around.  Well, it’s a 20 minute special, so it’s not like they have to have all the answers.
So I think the implication here is that Bardock didn’t just get sent back to some random moment in history.  I think he wound up going back a thousand years, and becoming the same Legendary Super Saiyan that Vegeta grew up hearing about.  You know, this happy character:
Tumblr media
Of course, Episode of Bardock was never more than a “what-if” story in the first place, so it’s not like it’s anything close to hard canon.  Hell, Father of Goku isn’t canon either, so how could Episode of Bardock be canon?   Still, I like the idea that Bardock didn’t just die with Planet Vegeta, and that he got flung back in time to become one of the heroes of Saiyan legend.
Of course, I put a lot of time into making a Super Saiyan OC who fills that same role, so my personal canon is that Bardock went back to 3000 years before Planet Vegeta’s destruction, and he became the Legendary Super Saiyan of that millennium.  Basically, I adhere to a strict “once every thousand years” rule, and the Super Saiyan lineage goes like this:
3000 years ago: Bardock
2000 years ago: Chanisp
1000 years ago: Luffa
Present day: Goku.
But that’s just my silly business.  The rest of you are free to interpret this special as you please.
It is also plausible that Bardock did not become a historical figure.  Maybe he lived and died in relative obscurity, and no one else heard about his adventure on Planet Plant.  I mean, Chilled asked his crew to warn his family, but we have no way of knowing if the word actually got out.  They might have turned renegade after Chilled’s death, or maybe their ship was destroyed in a space anomaly before they could contact anyone.  In this scenario, the Legendary Super Saiyans were their own thing, and Bardock was just a rando Super Saiyan who never got included into Saiyan folklore. It’s fun to think about.
Anyway, that’s all we’ve got.  If you like Super Saiyan Bardock, it’s a fun little thing, but not much more than that. If you hate Super Saiyans and/or Bardock, you’re gonna have a bad time.

Idk if anyone’s asked about the Tokyo Ghoul AU yet ? But 👁️👁️
oh yeah that one lmao
so I've always loved the world of tokyo ghoul because I just think it's really interesting, and a more 'monstrous' take on vampires in a way. I've always considered doing an au of it but never had any ideas for plot until recently.
tommy is a junior ccg investigator (the organization that hunts down ghouls) who was being mentored by wilbur, one of the youngest ever ccg investigators to reach first rank. despite tommy's less than stellar reputation from the academy, he and wilbur get along like a house on fire, and bond really really quickly. they're doing great in their investigations and things seem perfect-
until wilbur goes missing.
he disappears one day without a trace, and instead of letting their record get stained with assuming one of their most promising investigators got killed by a ghoul, the official report ends up concluding that he killed himself since he had a history of dealing with that kind of stuff. tommy calls bullshit though because while he knows wilbur had dealt with that stuff in the past, he knew wilbur better than anyone else and knows that wasn't what happened.
he gets reassigned under a new mentor—a special rank investigator named sam—and while he gets along fine with sam he's grieving wilbur and refuses to accept what the ccg told him. and as time goes on, when he's walking back to his apartment at night he feels like someone's following him. eventually he confronts his stalker and realizes its a ghoul. one who doesn't say a word but flees the second tommy turns on them instead of trying to fight. and the mystery starts to unravel from there.

Today in Great Lakes shipping history. May 24th.
2023: Tuesday evening the Canadian-flagged motor vessel Cuyahoga called Mayday reporting an engine room fire.
Search and rescue vessels CCGS Cape Dundas, Colchester Guardian, and CG45756 sped to the area to assist, as did an airborne USCG MH-65 Dolphin helicopter. Nearby lakers Indiana Harbor and Radcliffe R. Latimer were also called to the scene.
According to the Coast Guard, crew members were able to remain on board while the fire was put out. Lifeboats were lowered as a precaution. No injuries were reported. Cuyahoga was heading from Marblehead, OH to Kingsville, ON.
There are varying reports about the severity of the incident, many based on live scanner traffic, which may have made the fire sound worse than it may have been. There is no information about the damage to Cuyahoga and no information as to what caused the fire.As of 9 a.m. Wednesday the vessel was anchored roughly 6.4 nautical miles from shore off Leamington, ON, Municipal Marina.
The Cuyahoga was built in 1943 and is the oldest operating vessel in Canada’s Great Lakes fleet.

Learning from Friends: “The Collective School”
The below conversation was published in e-flux Education on March 30, 2023. Thank you, Tyler Considine, for the invitation.
Asia Art Archive (AAA) in Hong Kong recently hosted “The Collective School,” an exhibition and a program series exploring artist-driven and collective models of learning. Developed in collaboration with Gudskul, a Jakarta-based collective that runs a grassroots school for other collectives, the project provokes debates about the necessity and adaptability of collectives today. Amid the growing expectation for art institutions to address social change and learn from collaborative and self-organized initiatives, art collectives have become more relevant than ever. Here, Susanna Chung and Özge Ersoy, two members of the AAA team, discuss the exhibition’s unfolding and what they have learned in the process.
Özge Ersoy: Imagine: You walk out of the elevator onto the eleventh floor of an office building in one of Hong Kong’s old neighborhoods. Through the windows, you first encounter the city’s landscape. Focusing closer, you see a library, with tens of thousands of books nestled among artworks and archival documents about contemporary art collectives. You walk into a spacious reading room and see a large column with hand-drawn graphics highlighting some key values about the current exhibition. You read: knowledge sharing, learning from friends, and collective sustainability.
These concepts have been central to Asia Art Archive’s group discussions with the Jakarta-based Gudskul, our main collaborator for “The Collective School,” and eight other collectives: ba-bau AIR, Hanoi; BiSCA, Bishkek; Load na Dito and Salikhain Kolektib, Quezon City; Omnispace, Bandung; Pangrok Sulap, Sabah; Scutoid Coop, Kaohsiung; and Yayasan Tonjo Foundation, Yogyakarta. 1 Together, we asked: How can we shift the focus of art history from individual artists to communities? How do artists learn from each other outside of formal education and through collectives?
I’ve been excited about our collaboration with Gudskul, especially because they run a grassroots school for other collectives. For us, Gudskul’s model articulates a bold proposition about existing art-educational models: Art schools are often geared toward individual mastery, skill refinement, and career-oriented networking. In contrast, students at Gudskul are already members of existing collectives. They join other collectives to study historical precedents, discuss collective working models, and develop exhibitions and projects together. Eventually participants work as a collective of collectives.

Susanna Chung: After we invited Gudskul to collaborate on “The Collective School,” they asked us to contribute to their study program. We joined Batch 4, the program’s fourth year, to develop it together with Gudskul and the cohort. While Batch 1 to Batch 3 were held at Gudskul’s campus, where collectives lived and studied together, Batch 4 was held completely online due to the pandemic. Collectives emerge in response to their unique contexts, and while many of them share ideas on the sustainability of collectives and the creation of education platforms, they respond to their contexts with different artistic practices. Becoming more adaptive and responsive to current events, Gudskul engendered new possibilities by connecting beyond Indonesia. As part of this unprecedented Batch, we were able to share and learn about different contexts in which collectivity persists.
Through four seminars, we introduced AAA’s extensive research on art pedagogies in relation to the development of contemporary art across Asia. After sharing case studies from China, India, the Philippines, and Thailand, we invited each collective to focus on one historical collective that most resonated. 2 Those who shared similar interests formed a group, which our researchers joined to exchange ideas, answer questions, and provide materials to inspire the collectives’ artworks. Our team crafted the exhibition narrative and display ideas only after all the works were finalized. All decisions were made in group discussions.
ÖE: The circular model of working diverges from our usual ways of organizing projects, which are often linear and entail a clear division of work. It’s refreshing. I would like to highlight an artwork here: In the middle of the library, we have a one-meter-high fire sculpture made by Quezon City–based collective Load na Dito. It is placed on top of a table covered with the reproduction of a black-and-white photograph depicting a burning action by Xiamen Dada, an art collective known for their radical performances critiquing art institutions in China in the late 1980s. This sculpture is further juxtaposed with a video documentary showing the creation of a four-meter-high effigy for a street demonstration by a group of collectives from Quezon City. Here, Load na Dito proposes the act of burning as a symbol of change and regeneration, a metaphor of collective actions that challenge institutions. By showing their connections with other collectives—both past and present—Load na Dito pays tribute to the legacy of activism of collectives and carries the torch forward.

SC: Another compelling contribution is one between Pangrok Sulap and Salikhain Kolektib. They both responded to Womanifesto, a feminist art collective and biennial program in Thailand that was most active from the mid-1990s to the mid-2000s.
Pangrok Sulap uses woodcut print as their medium to empower rural communities. Depicting key moments in Womanifesto’s history, their work illustrates the solidarity among women artists and local craftspeople, prompting reflections about the role of artists as custodians of traditional cultural knowledge.
Salikhain Kolektib arranges archival materials about Womanifesto and their own collective chronologically. In the spirit of collaboration, Salikhain Kolektib joined Pangrok Sulap in creating a mirror display box. The mirroring effect melds the two collectives’ works in a fascinating way: the reverse of Pangrok Sulap’s print, featuring a protest for gender equality, can only be seen through Salikhain Kolektib’s artwork. Conversely, the partial reflections of materials through angled mirror slabs disrupt the chronological timeline of the latter’s installation. Rejecting the linearity and singularity of time and place, both collectives’ works invite us to think about sustainability, adaptability, and survival—common foundational concerns of contemporary art collectives.

ÖE: It’s crucial that Gudskul, Batch 4, and our team discussed not only the potentials of working together but also the challenges and even limitations.
ba-bau AIR created an interactive jenga installation that materializes these conditions. Each hardwood block features terms from three texts related to Black Artists of Asia, a collective that initiated VIVA ExCon in the early 1990s. VIVA ExCon is the longest-running artist-led biennial in the Philippines, and this is another example of a contemporary collective revisiting art-historical documents and art actions in the region from the 1980s and 1990s.
As you begin building with the blocks, free associative readings about resilience and survival emerge. However, a jenga tower will eventually collapse, pointing to the tensions between construction and deconstruction. Yet when we think about the work not as a competition but as a cooperative game, the results become less finite. Your collective work might sometimes feel unstable, but the intention is to keep building together. Even if or when it collapses, other chances of regeneration will emerge.

SC: The fluidity of art collectives, as showcased by “The Collective School,” inspires the work we do. An archive is a mobile being, constantly rethinking its positioning and priorities through connecting with artists and collectives.
Their ideas shape our research, programs, and the sites we inhabit. “The Collective School,” for instance, has made us reflect on our long-term interest in pedagogy as a site where modern and contemporary art histories of the region have been written. Beyond the role of art school, this project has also encouraged us to generate new questions about artist-led models of education and alternative pedagogies. Apart from learning in schools, artists also learn from their peers. Collectives can serve as a continuous learning platform for those who have completed art school, as well as those who have not attended art school.
ÖE: One important takeaway from this exploration of how art collectives learn and educate is their insistence on play. It has inspired new programs, such as “Assemblage at AAA,” a durational performance by Hong Kong–based collective Floating Projects. For two days in a row, members brought in found materials as well as items from our library and office and from their own space, and began creating.
I immediately think back to a conversation with Floating Projects, where member Wong Chun-hoi said, “We should be in the same space and play together, instead of talking about what we do and how we do it.”
In the performance, the space of the archive was activated by sharing and collective action. One artist assembled a chess-like game, another few built a sculpture with shredded paper of the collective’s confidential documents, while some others made music and did automatic writing. Anyone in the library was invited to join.
SC: This collective model of learning also helped me rethink our educator programs. Since 2013, we have been organizing the annual Teaching Labs, a professional development series for teachers, each year focusing on a theme that is relevant to contemporary art and education, with this year’s being art collectives.
Working with Gudskul taught me that “art collectives” is not simply a “theme” for study but a model of learning. It inspired me to experiment with a new program, “Knowledge Kitchen,” where ten artists and ten educators gather for six hours each month to engage with creative exercises, games, chats, dinners, and sharing sessions by guest artists. We would like to use this process to practice and experiment with new models of learning. Our goal is to explore how teachers and artists can co-learn, co-create, and co-work together.
Arts programming, like formal education, often transmits knowledge one way; artists or teachers unilaterally impart their knowledge and experience to an audience. This program seeks to cultivate a more open and equal environment for knowledge exchange. We want to link artists’ unique abilities to interpret the world with educators’ intimate understanding of classroom settings. It’s exciting to see what comes out of this. Who knows? Maybe self-organized collaborative projects, lifelong friendships, and more. Our hope is that through this exploration, teachers and artists will reconsider their relationships with students and audiences in various educational and artistic settings, and engage with new imaginations for the future.

ÖE: Yes, we hope to move away from hierarchical ways of knowledge sharing. Apart from “Assemblage at AAA” and “Knowledge Kitchen,” we also hosted a live-streamed cooperative board game called “Speculative Collective.” Rather than inviting Gudskul and the eight collectives to present a talk, we asked them to show us what they cared about through playing. By responding to a series of challenge cards and drafting solutions, they revealed how they approach resource-sharing and collective decision-making. We wanted our audience to engage with—not to be told about—the exhibition.
SC: It’s important to us that this exhibition is the inaugural one of our newly renovated library. We have built a reading room in the center of the library, creating a space for co-working and co-learning, which also serves as a social space for discussion and learning from one another. Working with art collectives across Asia has not only helped us reorient the direction of our programming but has also allowed us to see the necessity and urgency of collectivity here in Hong Kong. We’ve deepened ties with our local partners Floating Projects and Rooftop Institute, whose practices revolve around alternative learning models. This is our first time studying the topic of collectives so closely, and the new library reflects who we are in the spatial sense. Since the beginning, we did not want the library to be a static collection, but rather a place to open up discussion. The study of collectives has made us realize that we share many values with Gudskul, such as learning from friends, engaging in artistic conversations, sharing knowledge, exploring the ecosystem, caring about sustainability, being speculative, and making friends, which are all essential for archive building.
A series of programs at the library resulted from organic discussions with these collectives. In particular, Hong Kong Conversations brought together different generations of artists and cultural workers to discuss historical and contemporary conditions that make collective work necessary in the city. The first talk gathered members from eight Hong Kong collectives founded in the 1990s—Southern Artists Salon, Green Wave Art, The Originals, Epical Chamber, NUX, Community Museum Project, Your Ears Covered, and Kultkuli—followed by three younger collectives—Black Window, Floating Projects, and Popo-Post Art Group. For me, it was a historical moment to see different generations of collectives in the same room, listening to and learning from each other.

ÖE: “The Collective School” is an example of how we see archives as social spaces to bring people together, to exchange knowledge, and to connect regional and local contexts. Some consider archives depositories that do not have to interpret or display their holdings. For us, artistic collaborations, including the ones developed from “The Collective School,” are crucial to challenge this view.
Our collaboration with Gudskul and eight other collectives taught me to insist on using exhibitions and programs as research as well as pedagogical tools. The project rearticulates our understanding of art history, one that prioritizes relationships and communities over individuals and singular artworks.
As part of “Assemblage at AAA,” here is an excerpt from the automatic writing of Linda Lai from Floating Projects: “A fresh new library surrounded by chaos and calm before a tempest. Free conversations absolutely free and automatic and without a frame from a handful of frames and many breakable frames.” 3 This is how I would like to imagine our library—a site for artistic intervention and knowledge via the engendering of fragments, play, and free associations, whether they are verbal, sculptural, or textual.

On Guilty Pleasure
Been a while since I've done a,, navel-gazing kind of post, so here's a brief, meandering, possibly pointless look at my relationship/history with the concept of "Things you like that you're hesitant to tell other people about".
So for me, I was pretty much unashamed of what I was into until I hit Grade 6 in school. Before that point I went to a small, close-knit school where everyone in the same year was more or less friends. But in Grade 6 we moved to a new building, taking in kids from a bunch of different elementary/primary schools and things became kind of... fractionated, cliqueish. Suddenly I was ostracized, not just by the strangers but by my best friends as well. Why? Because I didn't like football. Or South Park. Because when we were told to do independent reading, I had the audacity to actually read. Because I enjoyed Digimon. And videogames that didn't say "EA Sports" on the back of the case. It sucked, and I stopped mentioning the stuff I was into because of that kind of social sense of shame. But hey, happy ending, near the end of the school year I finally fell in with other kids who were also into the nerdy shit. I still talk to most of them even now. But there was still stuff that was too nerdy even for them. I could talk about anime and CCG's and Final Fantasy and sci-fi books with them, but they'd get a little... non committal when I talked about fanfiction. Which, I get, not for everyone, I just enjoy fanfics in private and don't talk about it, but unlike Grade 6 I still actually have friends, so that's nice. But it kind of set a precedent.
I started backing off of stuff that I was into and my friends weren't. Eventually I stopped reading fanfiction. I changed what music I listened to, none of it was forced, and it's not like I didn't actually enjoy the same stuff my friends were into, I just took the path of least resistance. Years of stuff like backpedaling on my enjoyment of Code Lyoko, or half-heartedly defending FFXIII when a friend called it irredeemable. Eventually I got over it. I matured, my friends matured, eventually they stopped feeling the need to judge the worthiness of every piece of media and I stopped tying up my own value in the approval of my friends over my own interests. When I got into pro wrestling after checking out a new podcast from Internet Funnypeople LoadingReadyRun, I hid it at first, then started slowly sneaking in jokes and references. When I admitted I was a wrestling fan now I hedged and justified and my friends...didn't care. Eventually I fell back into reading fanfiction and I started sharing funny moments from a Slyvanas/Jaina political marriage AU while we were playing WoW together, and they fully laughed along with me. The worst anyone said was that they didn't like Slyvanas as a character. Now I'm kind of over the idea of 'Guilty Pleasures,' I enjoy the things I enjoy, and I don't feel any guilt or shame over it, so I don't hide it. The closest I get is that some stuff just doesn't come up. For example, until FlashFictionMonth a couple years ago it was never really relevant that I have a particular fondness for sweet romance stories about queer women where one is a single parent (For the curious my infection vector on that one was First Time at a Second Chance by TheGreatWeissShark, It's great, but does contain some smut; I think you get warned about it when it comes up but I can't recall for sure, so just go in aware). Or more recently I've come to greatly enjoy stories about trans folks coming out (cracking their egg/hatching is a term I've seen used?) and getting love and support from either their family, friends, or even strangers; I find that kind of thing beautiful, but it's also the kind of thing that's not necessarily the kind of story that's mine to tell, you know? (Putting Myself Together by AmaraWolfe is where I first realized I had a pattern in regards to that kind of story)
Yeah this is another one of those rambling posts that doesn't have a point. I guess what I'm saying don't be afraid to like what you like? Or to talk about it with your friends, because even if they don't share your interest there's a strong chance they won't care. Or at least not for very long.

Haise Sasaki [ Tokyo Ghoul: Re ]
Tumblr media
{ Info } ☾ { Roleplay with me } ☾ { Ask this character } ☾ { Tag } ☾ { Guidelines }
Name: Haise Sasaki (previously: Ken Kaneki) Canon: Tokyo Ghoul: Red Canon Point: Chapter 45 Age: 23 Species: Half-ghouls/half-Kakujas History: Wikia
Personality:
As Kaneki faced Arima in V14, he had one wish we never found until later: he wanted to die. In fact, he wanted to be loved and to be remembered and then, he wanted to die in style. None of this happened. In fact, Kaneki survived and was brought into the Ghoul prison, Cochlea, where he was kept under control. But Kaneki has no control, not over his life and not over his body, and as such he went mad each second he was locked inside that room. Arima, his reaper, brought reality upon him everytime and though we don't know what happened exactly, we know that from all of this something happened: Kaneki's mind broke into so many tiny pieces that it couldn't be found. He became a blank slate, his memories completely forgotten possibly due to trauma, docile and useful and this is how Haise Sasaki was born.
While the CCG studied his case, they also came up with ideas how to use Haise. According to the testing performed on him, they found him to be very intelligent with great memory capabilities and superb learning abilities, seen from his desire to read and learn. He is extremely empathic, but lacks assertiveness and shows to be very introvert. Above all, they came to realize that Haise craves for parental figure, specifically a mother. Decided to turn him into CCG's newest weapon, they offered him Akira Mado in order to fulfill that role, and Arima Kishou as the father figure. In fact, Haise himself admitted to see them exactly as such: rather than dwelling on the family he has lost along with his memories, he focus on his "father" Arima Kishou and his "mother" Akira Mado. The objective of this make-up family was not only to keep Haise under control by giving him what he craved for, but also for him to mentor a new kind of Ghoul Investigators, the Quinx. The Quinx members are humans with a built-in Quinque (a weapon that is fashioned from a ghoul's kagune) in their bodies, and the four only Quinxs - Urie, Shizaru, Mutsuki and Saiko - form the Quinx Squad, affiliated to Mado Squad and monitored and overseen by Sasaki, who is in turn overseen by both Akira and Arima.
The Quinx is a controversial project, not only because how weird it is to see a human with a kagune (even if it's not like an actual kagune), but also because they have Haise as the monitor. Though he is a diligent worker, at first he seemed to have problems controlling the members of the squad, often being too lenient on them. In fact, Haise seems them as children - his children - and he is very protective of them due to their unusual situation (Saiko calls him "maman"). He often tells them it's better to run if they are facing a stronger opponent, "even if your limbs have been cut off" and he is even protective to the point of allowing his own kagune and mind to run wild if it means to protect them (like it was seen during the battle with the Serpent), and he allows them to talk back (Urie), to slack off (Saiko), to go alone (Shizaru) and doesn't pressure them to better control their incorporated quinque (Mutsuki). Though at first it was incredibly hard for him to keep everything running smoothly, with time the team begun to trust him more (perhaps except Urie) and begun to accept Haise's words - Haise himself grew to become a bit more strict as he was criticized for not being so, and begun to face his underlings head-on. Due to this, the Squad managed to earn their place among the CCG squads and Haise was even promoted from Rank 1 Investigator to First Class Investigator. With Haise's mentorship and protection, they were able to become stronger and much more united. Besides mentoring the "kids", Haise also teaches CCG newest investigators, which only shows further his enjoyment in teaching others, to mentor them, to become their support, as well as acting a bit like a father. All of this is parallels Kaneki's relationship with Hinami.
Though he seems to be overall integrated in the CCG, there are several rules when dealing with Sasaki: he is to be treated as a human, but if his kagune runs wild, he will be seen as the SS ghoul Kaneki once was, and will be exterminated. For this reason, Haise's squad should not see Haise as a ghoul (Urie was specially rude when he found out about Haise's nature), and the same should be applied to all the other investigators but such does not happen: Haise suffers much prejudice and hatred from many Investigators, to the point they refuse his plans of investigation even if they are good plans. However, Haise is very amicable and doesn't seem to mind this; he takes this prejudice without appearing to hold grudges, and often seems friendly even during arguments, trying to reason rather than focusing on his co-workers hatred of him and his nature, and he event shows himself to be very humble even if he has earned many medals from his achievements. Akira has told him his kindness will be the end of him, though he truly seems to forget about the cruel things told to him: he wants to support his friends and co-workers and even when they are crude and rude, he still genuinely cares for them (though they consider it condescending). It's important to notice that while Haise accepts insults when they are directed at him, he usually makes a stand if they are aimed at his "children", and even tries to argue some of the orders given that he sees as dangerous.
The reason he seems to take hits like that is that Haise wants to be human even with "a body like this". In truth, being seen a ghoul seems to upset him greatly and though he hides his true feelings on the matter and smiles, he often avoids any conversation that will lead to talk about him being a ghoul. He is even seen doing "human things" like sitting with other people during meals even if he doesn't eat anything; though this would seem rude for most, to be eating around someone who can't eat anything at all, small things like this make Haise feel human, which is what he truly wants. While Kaneki's greatest fear was to be alone, Haise still fears this a lot and it brings him a lot of despair: he’s still “alone” as a ghoul in the CCG.
Despite being a CCG investigator, Haise doesn't believe in senseless extermination of ghouls and defends that there is no need to harm a ghoul more than necessary. This is frowned upon by many people - including Akira - as he appears to be a ghoul sympathizer, but often he has been vocal about his disapproval of some of the CCG's methods. Strangely enough, though he does not harm an enemy sadistically, most of the CCG compares Haise to Arima: someone who will do whatever he is told to do. Someone who always says "yes". So even if he argues sometimes and even if he doesn't torture ghouls, if he is told to exterminate them, he will - and he has. It's not surprising he is compared to Arima; after all, Haise pretty much imprinted on him. However, this is also related to the fact that Haise believes the moment he goes against the CCG, he will be discarded by them and by his made up family.
Generally speaking, Haise seems to be a continuation of Kaneki before he was captured by Aogiri, as mentioned by Tsukiyama. He loves books - though not the same type as Kaneki did - and he is kind and gentle. However, though he is an introvert because he doesn't speak his mind and lacks assertiveness, Haise is shown to be much more outgoing that Kaneki was. He appears to be constantly surrounded by allies, and seems to love stupid things like puns or silly humor (think dad jokes) and even Shizaru mentioned that though Haise sees the squad as his children, Haise is the most childish one. For example, he gave Mutsuki the nickname "Mucchan" quite out of the blue, and he usually tries to look cool but fails (Mutsuki didn't want to let him down and tried to reassure him he was very cool!). Sasaki seems to be Kaneki reclaiming his human side. He’s caring and compassionate, towards humans and ghouls alike; he values all life and actually finds rather sad that Takatsuki Sen (once his favorite author) shows such despair and hopelessness towards the world in her writing.
It'd be great if I could stop here and tell you that Haise is, despite his Ghoul-related problems, rather normal. He is not. After all, Haise is Kaneki.
It's usual for Haise to have flashbacks and dreams from his previous life. Deja-vús and weird memories that don't belong to him are often seen, and he knows what they mean: they came from his previous life. In truth, Haise thinks he's a parasite living in someone else’s body, though he still wants that body and fights for it. At first, Haise didn't even know the name of the person he was, but from the start Haise always saw someone else inside his mind. He pictured Kaneki as a kakuja monster, a hungry ghoul who wanted to consume him. He constantly heard him telling him he wanted his body back and whenever Haise felt like he was too weak to protect someone, Kaneki would appear and tell him to accept him, which shows Haise to believe Kaneki was not only a monster, but a real powerful one. This is the struggle Haise feels within his mind every time, but it's an artificial conflict he created: there aren't two people inside of him and this Kaneki is but his own view of everything he has forgotten and Kaneki actually changes accordingly to what Haise finally accepts.
Haise knows Kaneki is the past him, but doesn't want to lose what he has built with the CCG, his fake-family and his fake-life. And though he tells himself he is happy living like this and that's actually a lie, he holds on to everything the best he can. As response to it, Haise mind makes Kaneki tell him that Haise indulges in his twisted self-value that he has of himself, but that doesn't really exist and when it fades away, he will be discarded by the CCG. This is something that Haise really fears and Kaneki is often shown poking exactly at Haise's fears as a way for Haise to cling back to his existence harder while he continues to refuse to see the person he forgot he was.
However, he is finally forced to accept his past existed, and he honors the request to look at "Kaneki", the being appears to him as a white-haired child that he feels the need to protect. Just a child, also afraid to disappear and who doesn't want to be erased either - and because of such, he decided he will "save" Kaneki. He will not erase him. Or reject him anymore. And this is when he seems to come up with a "relationship" with this tiny child he sees inside his head; Tiny!kaneki is often seen reading, talking to him, filling up small gaps of memory that are never important enough to bring out all the memories. Haise also decided to search for himself, through records and talking to others about who and what Kaneki Ken was, as a way to see and save Kaneki.
But it's obvious that Haise can't continue to live while he has Kaneki inside. They can't coexist, and the more Haise looks at Kaneki, less "sane" he becomes and he feels like he starts to fade away. Though Kaneki gives Haise this warning, and Haise realizes that means one needs to disappear, he still attempts to know more about Kaneki: yet again, Haise shows us he is a continuation of Kaneki before Aogiri, by being unable to make choices.
Honestly, it's very complicated to look at Haise-Kaneki relationship and we have different interactions in different situations because it's all a response Haise has to his memories and his existence. The Tiny!Kaneki was never a complete representation of Kaneki: He's a representation of his vulnerability, misery, and mistakes. Haise reduced the monster he saw to a child, who is weaker and afraid; he was always a manifestation of his thoughts and fears more than anything else, which Haise shaped as he faced them. The fear of being a ghoul and then the fear of disappearing. But it all comes down to the biggest problem both Kaneki AND Haise manifest: they never choose. He is and always has been Kaneki, but he is pretending to be a different person and creating another persona in his head to keep his memories separated so he can keep acting like he’s a different person from who he used to be - and when those memories come to him, he continues in a limbo of wanting to exist and yet not wanting to forget, instead of just deciding to wake up from that pretend-life or to embrace it completely.
While there is this internal struggle, we see many similarities between Kaneki and Haise. Hinami herself mentions that a lot of things it feels like it's Kaneki talking, like the way he overthinks things. He also still has many of Kaneki's physical twitches: touching his face when he's lying or cracking his knuckles when he senses something dark or that reminds him of a hidden memory. However, even if there are similarities, they still show many difference between each other (like mentioned above) because someone's personality does come from their experiences.
