At 1:10 am PST Chiron gallops into Aries, and will remain there until 2026. In mythology Chiron was a centaur. His Oceanid mother, Philyra, was raped by his father Chronos. Abandoned by both his parents Chiron was raised by Apollo who taught the young centaur many skills like healing, herbalism, how to be a warrior, and astrology! Chiron later trained Jason, Achilles, and Hercules to be great heroes and warriors. Wounded by one of Hercules’ poison Hydra arrows and in insurmountable pain, Chiron offered to take Prometheus’ place rolling the boulder up the mountain so that Prometheus could escape an eternity of suffering, and Chiron, who was mortal, could receive an honorable death. • Sometimes seen as a minor planet, sometimes seen as a comet, Chiron represents the duality between being a warrior wounded in battle and healing from those wounds. Its Aquarius season! And we're almost halfway through- coming up on the "Avatar point" of the season.

The degree called an "Avatar" point is 15 degrees of any foxed sign. Any planets at this Avatar point show greatness, accomplishments, and (sadly) sacrifice. And 4 times a year the Sun lands on one of these points.

Each Avatar point is unique to it's sign, and also correspond to the cross-quarter holidays. This one in Aquarius is Imbolc, or Saint Brigid's day, or Candlemass.

So let's dive in to the Aquarius Avatar Point:

This point is 45 degrees away from the 0 degree of Capricorn, the preceding cardinal sign. So it's naturally semi-square to this very strong cardinal point, creating a tension and drive forward. Capricorn is about consolidation, order, authority; Aquarius is about detachment, and freedom. Aquarius takes the rules of Capricorn and decides which are good, and which need to be broken and reformed. It's about systematically improving the world, and working toward building a better future. (Can you see the Saturn connection between these two signs?)

The next step gets a bit more complicated. We add in the decanate* and dwad* to get a deeper picture. At 15 degrees, we have moved in to the 2nd decanate- in this case, that means Gemini (ruled by Mercury) is influencing the degree. The dwad, marked from 15 degrees to 17 1/2, is Leo (ruled by the sun). These create a mini sign- a very specific image of this one degree. This is a very head-and-heart placement. Mercury rules the mind, and you have two air signs at play; Leo rules the heart, and is a fiery aspect. Fixed, mutable, fixed. Air, air, fire. A lightning bolt, a decision made, a fire in your belly.

Rosa Parks was born with her Sun at 15 Aquarius. She is most well known for refusing to give up her seat on a segregated bus. She worked for the government, which means that in her daily work segregation was illegal. And she was married to an activist, meaning she was well versed in the political issues of her era. After already being seated, and being seated in the segregated/designated area for black people, the bus filled up and the driver decided to move the sign separating sections to behind her- making her give up her seat to a white person. Rosa refused- which was 100% legal. The bus driver was not allowed to move the sign. She had already been seated and had rights to refuse being moved. And yet she still lost her case!

In this example, Rosa Parks was known for how she handled this situation. She was calm and yet firm. She knew her rights (mercury), she was detached (Aquarius), but she stood her ground (sun, leo). The freedom of Aquarius and the structure of it's traditional ruler Saturn came in for her in the follow up: she got legal help and fought this in court. She had the stamina to stand by her convictions and fight.
