Ugh, this hurts so much… I don’t think I’ve been this emotional about a ship since the Merry, and it would be bad enough regardless since I’ve always loved the fact that Law’s crew all lived in a yellow submarine but knowing the whole backstory…that Wolf gave Law and Bepo and Penguin and Shachi the Polar Tang as a gift for helping save the town…that it was the same vessel they first set out as a named pirate crew in and has been with them since the beginning…that makes it even more sad.

Though that little sub did some pretty incredible things… It saved Luffy’s life at Marineford, helped the Scabbards sneak into the raid, saved Luffy’s life again at Wano… It put in work and I’m proud of it.

Chapter 1081 — Kuzan, the tenth Blackbeard captain

And thus the prophesies became true and Kuzan, protégé of Garp and admiral of the navy, was confirmed as the tenth titanic captain of the Blackbeard pirates. And lo, he is firm in his conviction and supports his new master and doubt does not plague him.

The chapter is gorgeous. Although I’m still miffed about the quality of the line work, the panelling is beautiful.

a) Great timing and teamwork! These people have been doing this before.

b) How does it feel for Pizarro to get his body modified like that? Can he override Prince Grus’s powers or do their powers cancel each other out?

c) Confirmation of Garp’s Conqueror’s Haki

d) GIVE US GOD VALLEY, ODA, I NEED TO SEE WHAT GARP AT PEAK POWER WAS LIKE (if he’s losing his touch here)

So Garp will obviously lose here and get captured (I don’t think Oda is going to kill him) together with Koby and the rest of the marines. I can’t think of a narrative that would let them escape here (will come back to this later) and we need something to kick off the final battle — why not Blackbeard kidnapping Luffy’s family and oldest friends?

I just want to point out the beautiful little foreshadowing of Garp’s grey focus and the very pretty panel of Hibari-san freezing over.

I wonder why Kuzan didn’t freeze Koby?

I wonder if it's less ambiguous in the original, but "It's be a bad look if Koby escapes" does scream FORESHADOWING FOR TURNCOAT-KUZAN with big, neon letters.

So at least Vasco Shot, Doc Q and Juan Wolf picked a fight with Kuzan and got popsicled. Why were they there in the first place? What is Blackbeard’s plan?

Nice to see how they met, as well! What a meet-cute. "You froze all my friends, let's be pals!" And confirmation for the rumours(?) about Kuzan losing a leg to Akainu. That's got to hurt.

And of course, his temper is quite something.

This is actually quite interesting: Kuzan seems much more on edge now, which might be understandable since he’s now missing the Marine safety net. He wasn’t quite as quick to the draw before the time skip. Of course, here he was just (indirectly) threatened with horrible death and dismemberment, and great reactions to freeze his opponents in a heartbeat, but still.

However: the Blackbeard captains seem to lack haki since they all got frozen over and Garp bursts out quite easily (as did Whitebeard at Marineford).

And iiiinteresting — I didn’t realise that Kuzan was Garp’s previous protégé. I knew Garp favoured him over Akainu, but this confirmation is new, yes?

Garp will probably lose, but Hachinosu is keeping me on tenterhooks!

And then.

And then my poor heart broke.

Into a thousand little pieces.

Like the Polar Tang.

Sinking into the sea.

Please Franky; please fix it.

Not even SULONG-BEPO (!!!) is enough for this heartbreak.

I wonder why Oda saved Law. Is he such a fan favourite that he couldn’t have the same sound defeat as Kid (who didn’t escape)? Is there a deeper meaning to the ‘picking fights’ and ‘defending yourself’? Is there something to the ‘trust you crew’ mentality Oda wants to point out?

(And silly Bepo: the Hearts will be captured and then you and Law are going on a suicide-rescue mission.)

So I know that a lot has been said about Sabo being a Replacement Ace, and there have been comparisons between Law and Nami (or Law and Robin (and I even saw Law as just a different flavor of Mihawk once, rawr)), but I would like to propose for the internet’s consideration: Law as a Replacement Ace.

Tall, dark, and handsome? Check.

Super-overpowered Devil Fruit? Check.

Tattoos? Check.

Delightfully allergic to shirts? Check.

Fun hat? Check.

“Why the fck is this adult man putting up with Luffy?” Check.

Secret name? Check.

Shipped with Nami, Zoro, Sanji, and Luffy with varying success rates? Check.

Survived the torching of their home? Check.

Broody little shit who surrounded himself with delightful loonies after leaving home? Check.

Fucked over by the WG? Check. Multiple times? Double-check.

Entire existence very specifically irritates Sengoku? Check.

Offered Warlord status? Check.

Adopted by a Very Tall Man? Check.

After living with a bunch of weirdos who love in their own way I guess? Check.

Adventures with the Straw Hats, featuring Smoker and Tashigi? Check.

An adventure that was a side-quest before toppling a Warlord unjustly ruling a hot-climate kingdom? Check.

Got into a fight with Blackbeard while I was in the middle of writing fic with them as semi-to-major players? CHECK.

In conclusion, these two men from polar opposite Blues share a lot of the same beats and I dig it. Except pls one of you two needs to stay safe and we only have one option left. I mean, there’s so many characters in this series that it’s highly unlikely one won’t start seeing some patterns, but you know... it’s just neat to notice.

Now Luffy just needs to learn what happened in ch.1081 and snap into Friend Protecc Mode.

One Piece 1093

Congratulations to Law for his second time trending as "Law's female form" and congrats to Kamiya Hiroshi too for trending alongside him!! (her?)

I have no doubt that Law's role would always be special to Kamiya. The way he strained his voice to raise his pitch to a new high made my throat sore on his behalf..... But I liked it more than I expected! I could feel in my bones that it was an uncomfortable transformation Law wanted to free himself from as soon as possible bwahahah

I like the anime original dialogue とにかく、ヤベぇ！(tonikaku, yabee!) Even with my crap japanese it was as hilarious as hearing him say "Anyway, I'm cooked!" I don't think Law uses the term "Yabee" a lot so that felt refreshing lol

It seems the more controversial quote was this one, the speech in Japanese would be literally translated to "my strength isn't coming out as usual". Personally, I didn't immediately associate it to weakness due to being woman but moreso as an additional side affect that came with it, after all, it's dubbed as a disease. I like to think Doc Q didn't only come up with it as a deranged fantasy but to impose a real handicap for the victim to have their body modified in a way that limits their ability to fight and use their usual powers, either due to magic or just out of discomfort. Unlike Ivankov's fruit that alters hormones, it's just a physical change, it makes sense why it's more unnatural and uncomfortable.

The female Law scene was animated by Yuu Yoshiyama, he also did Hancock's scene from Amazon Lilly invasion episode. The scene was fanservicey but thankfully not as over the top as the Bonney scene from few episode prior to this one. The episode didn't drag on even during the slower parts, the screentime was well spent. The obnoxious, repetitive closed up reaction shots weren't there.

Moving on to B part, nothing much to speak of Ishizuka's brilliant storyboard that hasn't been said. My favorite observation was this:

Some parts where characters didn't immediately follow up with a second attack was frustrating until I remembered Blackbeard and Law both put their lives on line when they use their fruit and so can't take risks. Cheaper trick shots and silly gimmicks that people blame Law for not using more frequently were probably never the best option. That said, unfortunately, Law lost the moment he used both his strongest attacks onscreen and failed. I don't think the fight was longer than what we saw here. The anime just made it more obvious.

Another anime original dialogue I liked is Blackbeard saying "what a handy ability you've got!" right before their final clash. He was using Tremor fruit until that point and then he switched to his OG attacks, it was unsettling how he's not only fighting but looking at Law's abilities as something that he'll soon take away from him. Unlike Doflamingo, Teach had no pre-decided plan involving Law's fruit and considered selling the fruit as appealing alternate as using it for its abilities. Honestly, we can't underestimate Doflamingo's knowledge. There's no way he stays in prison during the final arc.

And finally the Kuzan scene,,

rightfully the most praised section and probably my favorite part of the episode too. According to his tweet, Henry Thurlow animated the Kuzan scene traditionally on paper. Let's give Toei credit where it's due; they let their animators take time, be creative and love their work. Otherwise we wouldn't get scenes like this.

And that's it! The first (and the last?) time we see Heart pirates in proper action. Ch. 1081 is only ~17 chapters away. Hopefully we'll see it animated around the middle of this year. Hopefully Law's current condition in the manga is updated by then, otherwise it'll be very painful.

His wounds were something you haven’t seen before; even after Dressrosa the cuts and hits weren’t as deep and severe as those.  

Quickly, those who still can swim freely or with some difficulty, pull the ones at risk out of the water into the coasts of Victor Island.

Ahead of them, some yellow pieces of your home sink into the cold abyss of the Grandline. That in which Polar Tang had been surrounded and hugged, now seems to be its graveyard.

You can only focus on the pain your soul can feel, the physical wounds are nothing compared to it. But it's not just yours; it's what Law will feel when he finally wakes up.

Because he will. And your hands will make it possible.

A day or so has passed, the wounds have been treated. Bepo has returned to his usual form, and besides Penguin and Shachi nobody can stop asking him about his Sulong state. You were able to smile for the first time since the incident because of it. Seeing such a sweet polar bear turn into such a beast and then go back to his apologizing ways is always a little funny.

However, there is something that you can all agree… there wouldn’t be enough gratefulness towards him for saving Law from getting his most precious treasures out of him; his life & the Ope Ope no mi.

A new night came and the still pretty tired -but alive- crewmembers head to their improvised beds still on the coast of that island. Law, continues to be submerged into unconsciousness. Maybe is not that he is not strong enough to wake up, but he doesn’t really want to.

You snuggle on his side. It’s a blessing to be able to grab his hand and feel it so warm. It could have been different. It could have been terrible.

Inside that little cave where you dragged him in, the soft brilliance of the moon only reaches the entrance, and the sound of raging waves fill the place. You wonder if those same waves are softly lulling Polar Tang to its eternal rest and some tears sprout from your eyes.

“I’m sorry…” he mumbles. Soft tattooed hand sloppily reaching for your cheek. It gets wet because of the tears.

“La-Law! You are awake!” you chime, trying to choke back tears that won’t stop falling. “Don’t try to move, you are still pretty hurt” you tell him, while grabbing his hand and planting a kiss on his palm.

“Your face… it’s hurt… I’m sorry… I couldn’t protect our home” he murmurs, with just one eye open because that’s what his swollen eyelids allow him to do.

You don’t care about anything; your wounds are nothing. He protected you all, he fought against a man who plays it dirty. Who is a coward and can’t win if he doesn’t steal other’s dreams. How dare him speak of dreams, when he goes around this world snatching them from others?

“No, Law. You are such a strong man. You protect us all. Your mission was completed, you put yourself in front of us to fight!” you try to make him understand he is not weak, that he should be the winner because Teach wasn’t able to take what he came to steal; the Ope Ope no mi.

Law turns to you with difficulty and grimacing in pain. His hands reach your cheeks, and his forehead presses against yours. “I’m glad you are alive. How is the rest?” he asks, with trembly voice. He is scared to hear what he doesn’t want to.

“The whole crew is alive. They are all safe and sound!” you inform him, allowing the poor doctor to breath a sigh of relief.

He nods, closing his eyelids tight. A tear tries to scape. Because there is yet another crew member he knows he lost. But, there is even more he wants to discover… He lifts his arm, putting his hand in the classic form to cast his “rooms”.

“ROOM…” he shily says, still with eyes closed and trembling lips.

With difficulty, a blue bubble of light sprouts from his palm illuminating the surroundings with its magical hue. Law barely opens his eye, and lets his body fall limp on yours. He is so relieved. His fruit, the reason why Cora-san died, the heart of his life is still inside him.

“Bepo saved you. He was the one who gave Teach the final blow to prevent him from stealing it. Bepo turned into Sulong… he saved you as a vice captain should” you proudly inform your captain -and lover-.

Law fixes his watery icy eyes on yours. And a smile you rarely see appears on his beaten-up countenance. “I’m so proud of my brother… I wont have enough life to pay him for this”

You know Bepo doesn’t need anything back for doing what he did, but you agree with Law either way.

However, Law’s sight reach for the sea outside the cave. And countless silent tears bathe his cheeks. He knows there will be no coming back, and his only home for the last 12 years is definitely gone.

“What will you do, now? I lost our home… how am I gonna face Mr. Wolff after this?” he murmurs, burying his head on your chest.

“We lost it the physical body of Polar Tang yes, but we didn’t lost our home Law…” you whisper, kissing his ruffled black hair with delicacy and tracing circles on his back with your palm.

You let him cry all he needs. After all, he is just human. And soon shy eyes surround you all. The whole crew wait to say something, they were all sleeping but his captains heartbeats surely woke them all.

“Law… are you sure we lost our home?” you ask, again, making him look up towards his nakama surrounding you.

You make them all come to him, slowly. Bepo is the first, however, to run and hug him. And in a big, sweet hug you all melt. “Captain, you are alive!” they all chime. But Law can’t stop apologizing for losing Polar.

“Law, I’m gonna ask you again… are you sure we lost our home?” you repeat, grabbing his cheeks. He blinks, in between blurry sight he keeps silent.

And you all, at unison repeat; “Captain… home is where the heart is!”

Heart Pirates Week 2024: Day 7: April 12: Bepo: Return

Bepo swore to Law that they’d return to their comrades, or their comrades would return to them. After all, the Narwhal followed the same routes, year after year after year. The snow goose migrated from one landmass to another, chasing the warmth. The orca navigated the seas. Return was inevitable. He had hope. They'd be a crew without a ship for sure. A return to old days. But they’d managed before and would again. Everything they’d invested their love and loyalty in to would be returned tenfold. He was certain of it.

This was the part that hurt the most reading through the raws because Law literally cannot do anything at this point and that he’s conscious at all is probably a miracle but his first concern is that he doesn’t want to abandon his crew. I remember way back during Dressrosa people were so adamant that Law didn’t really care about his crew so I hope that argument can go away entirely now because he cares so much, all he’s ever wanted to do is protect them and not get them involved in what he considers his personal issues.

But I’m going to trust Bepo here, because we know at least that Penguin and Shachi are unmatched in the water and if Bepo says they’ll be okay, I have to believe they will be (this also brings back Law’s words to Blackbeard at the start of the fight where he said that Blackbeard’s whole crew is at a disadvantage since they all have fruit powers and now the only reason Law and hopefully the rest of them got away is because Blackbeard has no way of chasing them underwater).
