I know mine's an unpopular opinion, but the Near/Linda comparison really isn't convincing? Linda was not ranked first at Wammy's. Near was. Being one of the two top successors, and with Mello dead...I don't think Near had that much of a choice. Call it entitlement, call it pride, refusing to carry L's legacy would kinda ruin the point of Near's existence in the story...

Mm, I don’t know that the person who was ranked first at Wammy’s would have been forced to become L regardless of their desires though?  I know Another Note certainly paints a pretty bleak picture where everyone is kinda forced into it, but I just don’t see this as being true of the manga. For all intents and purposes, it really did just appear as though Near wanted to be L and happened to be the highest ranked. 

But to your last point…. I get that you mean this more in a circle of life, Simba has come to reclaim his throne from Scar, sense of it but like…. isn’t the purpose of Near’s existence whatever he chooses to do with his life? Indulge me in an AU hypothetical for a moment here, but if, at the end of the series, Near realized that it was futile to attempt to live out his life as someone he wasn’t and decided to forge his own identity as N, with the help of the SPK, I don’t think that’d invalidate Near’s existence in the story at all. It’d be cheesy af tho, lmao.

I mean, at the end of the day, I guess I just don’t think I’d characterize Near’s decision to become L as coerced? It was not a decision made at the threat of his life etc. Whether he felt pressured to choose one way or another doesn’t negate the fact that he had the free will to make a different choice. Like generally speaking, just because there may be more pros to making a specific choice than cons doesn’t mean you lacked the freedom to make the choice that came with more cons. etc.

And again, I’completely agree that saying the choice was driven by a sense of entitlement isn’t necessarily fair, but I also don’t view Near as being a victim of the Wammy’s machine either. I think he did genuinely want to become the next L, and I think the fact that he seems to be so concerned about how well he’s fulfilling that role in Ch 109 shows that he wants to give that his sincere best effort. I didn’t get the sense that Near had any regrets or felt any kind of resentment over his choice, let’s put it that way, haha. 

But overall, yeah – there’s probably multiple reasons for Near’s decision. My only point had been that it just didn’t seem like the principled choice from an outside perspective. That’s not to say that there aren’t in character reasons for it, it’s just a thing that makes me :/

How to Write in Shorthand

So I’m the minute taker for the weekly meetings where I volunteer, and the handful of times I mentioned that the notes I take in the meetings themselves are written in shorthand, at least one other person has been impressed and excitedly exclaimed: “you can write in shorthand?!”

But like…. it’s super easy to write in shorthand. 

SO! Here’s all you need to know about shorthand!

Shorthand is great for taking notes in class, meetings, etc. Because it’s just quick, abbreviated writing. (I would however recommend that you type them up after the meeting for everyone else’s sake!)

There is no right way to write in shorthand!!

Everyone has they’re own personal shorthand, and others often have a hard time reading each other’s versions because of this. The point of shorthand is that the person writing it can do it quickly and without thinking about it, so if you’re trying to remember other people’s rules... it kinda defeats the purpose.

Tips for Writing in Shorthand:

- Use point form. Don’t bother with fully constructed sentences. You are writing quick short versions here. Just write the important words in the sentence and move on. Drop smaller words that don’t contribute much to the sentence. Like it’ll contribute flow, but you can still determine the important information without them. For example: instead of writing “We decided on doing a new design for our business cards.” You can just say “Business cards: new design.”

- Use txt spk. Yea, abbreviate words like you’re texting on an old cell phone that doesn’t have a full keyboard. Drop vowels, only write the first few letters of the word. For example: abt for about, diff for different, etc. Even doing “no.” instead of number is technically one of these.

 - Use acronyms and initials. For example I volunteer for a youth organization, so the word “youth” gets used a lot. So I just put a capital Y instead of writing youth. Also I have created several of my own acronyms. For example every week we have to come up with a “Question Of The Day” for the icebreaker during our youth group, so I just write “QOTD”. When talking about youth engagement, I write YE. etc, etc. And luckily for me most of the people in my group don’t share the same first letter of their names, so I can just use their first name initial when referring to them. (But for two that do, I just do B and Br to distinguish - r being the second letter in her name. (There’s also C and Ch, etc.) And if you have two people with the same name or the same first few letters of their names, just use initials. Like we had two Valeries for a while, so I did VB and VM)

- Use symbols and punctuation marks in place of words. Some are pretty obvious, like using $ in place of words like money, funding, payment, etc. or @ instead of at, but I also do a funky + for ‘and’ (because honestly how many people do you know that can consistently write/draw “&”?), but I have even come up with my own little simple symbols for certain things. Granted most of the time they are recognizable/common symbols or shapes, but just using them in place of words is what I mean. Some of them are obvious, like a heart for love or like, but I remember I used a triangle for something in highschool - I don’t remember what it was now, but several of my high school science notes have it. (And no it wasn’t the delta symbol, I remember specifically deciding that some specific long word would be a triangle from then on.)  Also I’m not sure if this is a symbol or an initial, but for ‘with’ I do a w with a line over it. You can even get creative: draw a simple mustache when talking about facial hair or something related, a super simplistic building (like a 3 sided rectangle with a few dots in it) for location, etc. etc. It’s your shorthand after all! Do with it what you want! If you’re worried about using the same symbol for multiple words (for example my $ for money, funding, payment, etc. thing), usually you can figure it out based on context. Plus I do really recommend typing up or writing out the notes afterwards, preferably within a week while it’s still somewhat fresh in your mind. For minutes it’s good for others, for your class notes: hey studying/securing the info in your head. And you can then organize your information to find it easier later on.

Plus you can use symbols to help forgo entire sentences too! For example during our meetings we’re coming up with ideas for future workshops, outreach, changes to how we do things, etc. etc. So for suggestions I do the initial of the person who suggested it, then the idea, then a check mark or an x beside it depending on whether or not we approved it. For example: K - speed friending X Then when I type that up in the minutes I would write: Kye suggested that we do a speed dating only for friendship instead of romance, however it was decided that we wouldn’t do it.

- Connect related topics with arrows. So say something was discussed, then something else was brought up, but then they said something else about the first subject. Well now you’ve got items from the first subject separated by something unrelated! Well instead of rewriting what the subject is, just write an arrow in the margin connecting the two chunks of text. Also if there’s some clarification just to be added on something already said, do a big one of these { in the margin beside it, and write the extra little info about it there in the margin - clarification can include “oh this is all relating to this one subject that hasn’t been mentioned, so I’ll just do ‘} YE Trainin’ in the margin!” (for example)

So that’s about everything I can think of. Good luck with your quicker notes! Also at first it will probably be fairly boring without many of these things in there, but over time you’ll get better with it and more used to using it, and eventually your notes may become completely illegible to anyone else because of all the symbols, abbreviations, acronyms, etc! 

Also: DON’T WORRY ABOUT MESSY HANDWRITING! That’s kind of part of it ;) (also feel free to make the whole thing look messy too, like one time I realized I forgot to write the timing of an event I wrote about, but I was already two pages past in my notebook, but there was a bit of space to the right of the page where it was written about, so I just wrote the time there diagonally and circled it to distinguish it from the other stuff written - like to show it wasn’t part of any of the other sentences.)
