From Resistance to Resilience: Rewriting the First Draft of Change
From Resistance to Collaboration: The Human Side of Change Ever notice how the first draft of anything—whether it’s a blog post or a major organizational shift—rarely resembles the final version? It’s raw, messy, and often riddled with self-doubt. Author Anne Lamott coined the term “Shitty First Drafts” in her classic book on writing, Bird by Bird, encouraging writers to embrace the mess as a…

EMOTIONAL CYCLE OF CHANGE: NAVIGATING TRANSITIONS AND TRANSFORMATIONS - CHAPTER -02
Tumblr media
***Continued from Chapter 01 (Emotional (Cognitive) Changes, Cognitive Reappraisal, The Emotional Cycle Of Change, Five Stages Of The Emotional Cycle, The Kubler Ross Change Curve)
Link to Chapter 01:
Embarking On Organizational Change
Organizational change is a huge undertaking. Too often, organizations focus on the expense of the project in terms of logistics and targets, and ignore the significant loss of revenue that will occur if its people never fully embrace the new way of working. Those initiating the change may expect colleagues to buy in and share their enthusiasm.
But changes – even those designed to benefit the individual and the organisation – can be traumatic, engendering feelings of loss of control, disempowerment and fear. A positive change for one person might mean a loss of status or security for another. Some might simply not be sold on the benefits, and may be reluctant to part with old ways, so they simply ignore the communications and the training and continue with the status quo.
Also, if the changes do not have buy-in from our teams, business improvement and ROI is unlikely to follow. The disruption of changing things over gives way to unease and murmurs – or outpourings – of discontent. The easier it is for people to make their transition through the change curve, the greater the organization’s likelihood of success in the new venture.
Change Curve Leadership: Managing Emotions Via the Change Curve
No matter how resilient someone may be, we all progress through the change curve when faced with significant changes to the way we work. Having an awareness of the stages and assessing where we are is a great place to start. It is not enough to understand or explain the various stages of the change curve. Individuals will need to be helped through each stage.
Team leaders can coach their teams through the change curve. The objective is to minimize the negative impact of the change by making the curve shallower and narrower.  Leading through the change curve is complex. Some points that may help are:-
Tumblr media
A)-> Not Treating Everyone The Same:
It’s really easy to look at the change curve and see it as a linear process, with each team member plotted neatly on it, but this doesn’t reflect reality.
It’s important not to make assumptions about where people may be on the curve, or that everyone will have the same worries. One person may be concerned about mastering the technical challenges of a new procedure whilst another is worried about their job security, as the procedure will eliminate the need for part of their role.
B)-> Advocating The Benefits Of Change:
Foster a sense of ownership and inclusion by talking about the positives that the change will bring about. Identify the obstacles that it will help overcome and relate them to people’s workday. Where possible, involve people in the rationale behind it.
C)-> Finding The Right Communication Style:
Resource Investigators are likely to respond enthusiastically to new prospects and possibilities, creating buzz around the change. By contrast, Monitor Evaluators will need time to reflect and may come back later with searching questions. Once we know the Team Role make-up of everyone (Belbin Team Roles), we will be well placed to provide the right communications at the right time.
D)-> Ensuring That Training Is In Place:
In order to embrace a new way of working, people will need to feel confident that they understand what is expected of them, and can fulfil their role. It’s crucial to ensure that training is thorough, timely and allows time for questions and practice, so that people feel comfortable with the new order.
E)-> Celebrating Success:
It is not just a case of acknowledging everyone’s hard work in bringing changes about and navigating the curve. It is also a way of embedding hard-won successes in corporate memory, so that adaptability is accepted as part of the organization’s DNA. With this outlook, people will be even more ready for the change the next time it comes around.
Belbin Team Roles and the Change Curve
Everyone has a different baseline when it comes to accepting change. In Belbin Team Role terms, Plants are likely to be on board if the change stems from their own idea. Resource Investigators and Shapers are likely to be the most comfortable with change, because they find it exciting and enjoy the prospect of new opportunities and visible progress.
Tumblr media
On the other hand, conservative, process-oriented Implementers are likely to struggle most with changes, which will threaten their efficient ways of working, at least in the short term. Monitor Evaluators are unlikely to respond with high emotion, but may be skeptical if they are yet to be convinced of the benefits of the change. Having the tools to communicate with, and support others, can help managers and leaders who are coaching people through the change curve. If we understand someone’s Team Roles -- their approach and priorities – and our own, we are better able to tailor our leadership style or coaching style to help coach them through the curve.
Leading and Managing Change: Reflections Along the Curve
First Reflection: People sometimes get stuck in one stage, or oscillate between two – often around ‘blame’. Sometimes people regress through this process. However, the stages it describes – where people progress through them – are normal human responses to change.
Second Reflection: The length, as well as the depth of the personal change curve, can be anything from a brief and minor ‘wobble’ (fluctuation) to a major ‘roller-coaster’ lasting for months. Some factors that tend to affect this length and depth – and the probability of emerging successfully on the upside – include: –
Tumblr media
This may go a long way towards explaining the relatively small disturbance that follows ‘positive changes’; in many cases, these are changes that we have initiated ourselves and feel more in control of.
Third Reflection: The change curve is a function of time. Some apparent ‘resistance’ simply reflects a difference between the position of those announcing a change and those receiving it. Those announcing the change have had greater involvement in the process to this point, so their personal change curve is shallower and shorter. They have also had more time to process the impact of change on themselves. So are typically further through the curve. So, at the point of the announcement, those receiving the change are right at the start of their curve. Judging their early reactions too harshly as ‘inappropriate resistance’ simply fails to recognize the natural process of human change.
Fourth Reflection: When people become angry about the change in general, or about particular aspects of it, and when they blame those announcing the change, they are (at least in part) expressing their own process of adjustment to the change. Of course, all feedback should be listened to and taken seriously. However, anger and blame from the recipients of change do not necessarily evidence that change is being managed badly.
Tumblr media
Fifth Reflection: It is important to note that this characteristic pattern of human response to change remains true for the positive changes in life as well as for unwelcome ones. Of course, not everyone will experience these things in exactly the same way, but many will recognize – from their own experience – elements of these descriptions.
Alternative Models for the Emotional Cycle of Change
Personal Change Cycle
The "personal change cycle" refers to the series of stages or phases that individuals go through when they undergo personal transformation or change. It encapsulates the psychological, emotional, and behavioral shifts that occur as people navigate changes in their lives, whether they are intentional, imposed, or circumstantial. This cycle typically involves stages such as awareness and recognition of the need for change, exploration and experimentation to make a conscious choice, adaptation, and ultimately conscious integration of the new changes into one's identity and lifestyle. Understanding the personal change cycle can help individuals manage transitions more effectively and adapt to new circumstances with greater resilience and self-awareness.
Tumblr media
The 5 Stage Emotional Cycle of Change
This is a framework that speaks specifically to voluntary change–change that we seek out for ourselves. It's this kind of change that often begins with incredible optimism. As we start building the narrative of what is to come once change happens, we focus mostly on the upside. It makes sense–the upside is likely why we are making the change in the first place.
But, as anyone who has seen change through would know, optimism is often poked with bits of pessimism and realism along the way, as the act of change requires a fundamental shift in something that was once deeply rooted and familiar. This can be hard. It is so hard that sometimes we turn around and say "maybe later" to our dreams of a changed future and stick with how things have always been. The framework has five stages:
Tumblr media
1. Uninformed optimism: Here, we imagine the benefits but have not experienced any of the costs. Uninformed optimism sits above the line the land of positive emotion. We brainstorm and strategize for the future.
2. Informed pessimism: Uninformed optimism does not usually last long. As we learn the reality of what it takes to change, positive emotions quickly sour with pessimism starting to set in. Here, the benefits do not seem as real, important, or immediate, and the costs of the change is apparent.
3. Valley of despair: This is when many people give up. The pain of change is felt and the benefits seem far away and unimportant. The quickest way to end the discomfort is to quit and go back to the way we did things before the change was introduced. We will be able to persevere if we know why we are making the change and have a compelling future vision of what we want to achieve.
4. Informed optimism: The possibility of success increases and we are back in the positive emotional zone. The benefits of our actions are starting to bear fruit and the cost of change is feeling worth it. The key here is not to stop but keep going.
5. Success and fulfillment: Here, the benefits of our new behaviors are fully experienced and the cost of change is perceived now as worth it. The actions that were once difficult and uncomfortable are now routine.
The 12 Emotional Stages Of Change
John Fisher’s Process of Transition curve explains how people respond to change through defined phases that are followed in succession until they accept the change. This change theory is based on earlier studies by Elisabeth Kübler-Ross who identified various stages of grief. Fisher’s model is more focused on business.  Much of the actual transition through the phases is completed subconsciously. The key to understanding the phases is not to feel like we must go through every one of them, in precise order.
Tumblr media
Implementing Change
When implementing change, organizations often focus on the systems, processes, and outcomes, but fail to understand or consider the emotional impact it will have on people. Equipping people both physically and emotionally to deal with change effectively will significantly develop the resilience of the individual, the team and the organization. The 7-Stage Change Model below is a fluid model to manage change. Each stage may be revisited as changes are implemented, depending on the needs of the organization. The stages include:

one of my favourite aspects of supernatural that you very rarely see in paranormal shows is that sam and dean are already versed in the world they live in. there’s no sudden discovery of ghosts and demons and now they have to learn about them along with the audience; they are born into it and already know all about it. it allows the audience to follow their personal story instead of also trying to figure out this new world and its rules
the first season is full of knowledge we never see them learn; “w*ndigoes are in the minnesota woods or- or northern michigan. i’ve never even heard of one this far west.” […] “great. well then this [his gun] is useless.” (1x02), “you don’t break a curse. you get the hell out of its way.” (1x08), d: “it’s a god. a pagan god, anyway.” […] “the annual cycle of its killings? and the fact that the victims are always a man and a woman. like some kind of fertility right.” […] s: “the last meal. given to sacrificial victims. d: “yeah, i’m thinking a ritual sacrifice to appease some pagan god.” (1x11)
almost every episode in the first season is a monster they’ve faced before that they then explain to the audience in a way that should feel patronising; like it’s the same speech given over and over again but instead, the audience almost feels included in the knowledge. it’s stated with such an innate confidence and comfort in said knowledge that it feels like we already knew it too; “spirits and demons don't have to unlock doors. if they want inside, they just go through the walls.” […] “the claws, the speed that it moves; could be a skinwalker, maybe a black dog.” (1x02), “it's biblical numerology. you know noah's ark, it rained for forty days. the number means death.” (1x04), “no no no, not the reaper, a reaper. there's reaper lore in pretty much every culture on earth, it goes by 100 different names.” […] “you said it yourself that the clock stopped, right? reapers stop time. and you can only see 'em when they're coming at you which is why i could see it and you couldn't.” (1x12)
they already know and, at least in the first season, already have what they need to kill whatever they’re hunting; already know to salt and burn bones for spirits, fire for a w*ndigo, exorcisms for demons, a silver bullet to the heart for shapeshifters. there’s only three times in the entire first season that they run into something new to them; 1x14 when sam gets his first vision that leads him to another psychic, 1x16 when dean calls caleb for help on the sigil he put together and he tells him about daevas, and 1x20 when they find out vampires are real- and they only don’t know that bc john thought they were hunted to extinction and not worth mentioning
(there’s also technically two half instances if you count one of them knowing something the other doesn’t - sam figuring out the tulpa in 1x17 and dean already knowing about the shtriga in 1x18 - but those still rely on sam and dean having prior knowledge)
even when they’re uncertain about facing something, it’s not bc they don’t know what it is; it’s precisely bc they know what it is and acknowledge that it’ll be a difficult hunt (“i don't know, man. this isn't our normal gig. i mean, demons, they don't want anything, just death and destruction for its own sake. this is big. and i wish dad was here.” 1x04)
so much of the tension in paranormal shows typically comes from the main character(s) not knowing what is happening to them/the people around them and having to find out how to resolve it. supernatural is unique in that it operates more like a police procedural. the tension comes from solving the clues and identifying patterns to figure out who (what) the killer is and intercepting before they can take another victim
it’s such a different tone to go for when compared to other shows that came both before, during, and after its run. it sets sam and dean on even footing with each other since they both have the same knowledge going in, and it puts them in a place of authority usually reserved for an outside character
the shows i compare spn to most is charmed, buffy and teen wolf; every main character in those shows are brought into the paranormal world knowing nothing, putting them on the same level as the audience, and they have their mc interact with others already knowledgeable about that world in order to overcome their problem/monster of the week. the audience organically learns about this new world as the characters learn about it. it’s a sound writing strategy that prevents “as we already know”-style exposition but something that complicates it is if your world building isn’t unique or intriguing enough, this slow introduction can become boring
we’ve seen shows like these before; sitting through the same tropes of characters learning to use their powers, struggling with no longer feeling normal/relating to the regular world around them, and not knowing how much they can trust the people already involved in this new world gets repetitive. all three shows eventually reach the same level of comfort with their new world that spn starts with but if the characters aren’t enough to draw you in, you can end up dropping it before they reach that point (and often, before the overarching plot can really kick in and evolve the show beyond the villain of the week format)
it’s the superhero origin movie in tv format; dragged out and overplayed. dropping the audience into an established world of course comes with its own problems but you also have the benefit of pre-existing established character dynamics that let the audience slot in like they’ve always been there instead of just getting to know all the characters while the characters also get to know each other
sam and dean already knowing about the supernatural lets the audience immediately get to the core of the story; the conflict between sam and dean, the search for their father, and the mystery of what killed their mother
#i could go on forever theres literally so many examples#dean figuring the ‘two dark doubles’ is a shapeshifter sam figuring out the changing ghost is a tulpa#also peak how many of these examples come from dean despite them pushing so hard for sam to be the one knowing hunting theory#this format is why i cant stand watching the first season of charmed despite loving it so much#i just cant be bothered watching them have the same struggle ive seen a hundred times play out again#different genre but sons of anarchy does this well too; all the characters are already in the club life and already have inner conflict#spn having such a natural introduction makes me so glad they didnt go with the original plan of sam not knowing about hunting#that wouldve been Painful#watching spn so young has really shaped my view of media bc i legit cant stand things with a learning curve#give me an established world damnit#lord of the rings never stops to explain what a dwarf is! you just go with it! and it rules!#dean is just as theoretical and lore savvy as sam and id go as far to say he actually knows more#instead of trying to do this bullshit brains v brawn divide they shouldve done new tech vs analogue#sams laptop is famous and he also knows how to hack thing where the second dean doesnt know something he defaults to books#have dean be the one where if its written down he can find it almost like a proto bobby#they even kind of support that by him being the one to find the phoenix in s6 when they go through all their books#but this was 2005 and characters could only be so conplex and theyd already decided dean needed to be the hot one and sams the nerd one#side note how many of these metas am i going to write on this rewatch? tbd#side side note included all the quotes and episode numbers makes me feel so academic#coming out of my cage and ive been doing just fine.txt#carry on my wayward son#talk meta to me#meta#supernatural meta#spn#supernatural#dean winchester#sam winchester#save post

weird thing: in kh2, xigbar saying "as if" is intentionally dated—the game came out in 2005, and "as if" is 90's slang, popularized by the movie Clueless, which came out ten years prior to the game's release. hes a ~50 year old man (ignoring [gestures at his Whole Deal]) trying to sound like a teenager and failing, maybe on purpose. one of those people who misuses teen slang around teenagers specifically to watch the light fade from their eyes.
however. the years start comin and they dont stop comin. kh4 takes place only ~1-2 years after kh2; the timeline of the games is progressing much more slowly than the timeline of Real Life. xigbar will still be a 50 year old man (ignoring etc.) using 90s slang.
but soon. a 50 year old man using 90s slang will read less as him wanting to annoy teens, and more as him using slang that he would have used as a teenager in the 90s.
though hes also very much still doing it to annoy teens. thats a critical part of his character.

Any thoughts about how you're gonna approach moons sis def being a fading kit? How would this work in your world?
I've gotten this question a few times and it's honestly really simple; she can be a Fading Kit who refused to fade.
Fading Kits are extremely common to the point of not being a thing that is mourned. Clan Cats believe that they're StarClan spirits who come down to deliver the souls of the rest of the litter, and sometimes "fall in" either by accident or to briefly visit.
So, Moon's parents would believe she was just a normal occurance, until they were wracking their brains trying to figure out what's happening and realize the description fits what should have just been a StarClan visitor.
But that's as far as I'm going with it for now. I need to see where this arc goes, because I might end up deciding that it would fit the story better to do something different entirely. You know how the writing team is about having 6th books that are massively disconnected from the tone and themes of the 1st one.
It's just too early to be making plans-- but the idea that Moonpaw's sister would be a Fading Kit in BB's cultural overhauls isn't even slightly hard to work with.

At the start of this project all I wanted was to 'learn how to draw' using comics as a medium and the MDZS audio drama as inspiration.
I've come *very* far from making simple, 3 panel black and white comics, and I truly do intend to go even further. Thank you to everyone who cheered me on throughout 2023, it has been an incredible year in so many ways I never could have imagined. I look forwards to drawing throughout 2024 B*)

There are many things people expect from one called 'God of Blood'. Always, the first thought is the blood of war, the blood of violence, the blood of the weak shed for the goals of the strong. Ares doesn't think of the blood of battle at all. When he thinks of blood, he envisions the many tied knots of blood bonds and bonds forged in the blood of battle. Blood sons and blood daughters, blood brothers and battle sisters, blood oaths and blood vengeance - he watches over them all and keeps close each one of these bonds.
One cannot begrudge his displeasure then when he realises he cannot tell Leto's offspring apart just by looking at them.
It was easier when it was just Artemis. Dark hair curled about her shoulders, a fierce mien whenever Father summons her to the mountain, a scattering of bones and blood shed whenever she was disturbed; the eldest child of Leto was a wild thing, sharp toothed with sharper claws always at the ready. There's whispers of her being a twin, of her other half being made to crawl on their belly as penance for their sin of god-slaying but Ares pays it little mind. What twins look alike among their number? Even dog litters are born distinct with all their unique markings inlaid in their fur. Artemis' twin too would be much more than their sister's mirror image.
Pouring over his list now, he wishes anything about Phoebus Apollo was that simple.
Mirror image did not begin to describe it. The twins were the same height, the same build, had the same colour and texture hair, ate the same raw food and drank the same amount of nectar. There was no difference in how they dressed, no difference in the company they kept, no variance in the weapons they used. There are some days Ares still cannot believe Phoebus will grow into a man and not some nymph with the way his ears have that slender point. He watches them now, sitting together beneath a shady palm and stringing their bows in an uncanny unison and curses because he still cannot tell them apart. What use is his skill in knowing blood when they both have the same damn blood running through their veins? What bond is there to sense when they are tied so tightly together, Ares can scarcely tell brother from sister?
He sighs. Unadorned and completely alone, the only way to know who is who is to speak to them. He'll have to find more ways to tell them apart from a distance. Surely they cannot stay this similar all the rest of their immortal lives.
Tumblr media
#ginger writes#hello and welcome to my 'ares is doing his best' corner#I can't overstate enough how alike Artemis and Apollo are as young gods physically#literally identical twin status which only begins to change as they acquire different domains#I was really happy with the font I got because it very closely resembles what I imagine Ares' handwriting to be like#But I'll gladly add an image description if it's too illegible#That said Ares has an interesting dynamic with the twins#In a lot of ways there's a sense of guilt/wariness surrounding him for Apollo and Artemis#because he knows how much they stress his mother out and he also knows how much Hera doesn't like Leto#But there's also a bit of fascination because Artemis is extremely strong#(in a way that's markedly different from Athena's strength)#while Apollo has all of these crazy stories attached to him from killing Python + his work while exiled#but when he returns he's very placid and calm and almost?? too nice? Definitely nothing like Artemis#in terms of personality#Ares doesn't really trust it until he learns that straight up that's just What Apollo Is Like#That too will change eventually but for now Ares just doesn't want to approach Artemis the way he'd approach Apollo#because he'd get his head caved in with the curved side of a bow#There are precious few encounters Ares has had with Artemis where he hasn't walked away with#at least a few arrow wounds LMAO#He'll eventually be forced to accept that it's Artemis' love language#ares#artemis#apollo#pursuing daybreak posting#writing

I think sometimes people go into a media with a set opinion/moral or they see something along the way that they can attach that moral to, and then they get really attached to that interpretation, only to find themselves disappointed when later events reveal the media/writers have their own moral in mind. And then they take it out on the media (bad writing/inconsistent/etc.) or on other fans (my way is the only way type thinking) rather than admit that their interpretation differs from the writer’s intent or that they originally misinterpreted something. Or just that there are multiple ways to interpret something or that some plot points are complex.
And I think this can especially happen with Wicked when somebody watches Part 1 and gets really attached to Elphaba’s plotline, awaiting the moment when she overthrows the government and makes everything better, only to realize at the end that Wicked had different themes in mind, which Glinda is very central to and not just in a, “she does everything wrong” way.
omg totally agree! some additional thoughts, though:
wicked is a tragedy, and both elphaba and glinda's ending show the tragedy of extremist and institutional politics respectively
elphaba's decides to defy the wizard because she cannot tolerate injustice and is extremely principled. and i think this is good. we should all strive to be more like elphaba, to stand up against injustice, to put ourselves at risk for the good of others
unfortunately, all of the things that make elphaba a good person are also the things that lead to her downfall. she's admirable for not being willing to negotiate with the wizard, the wizard is horrible, but this also means she sacrifices all of her social capital. elphaba does good things as the wicked witch, and she frees a lot of animals. but ultimately, the system of oppression is so much bigger than what she can fix. she's left exiled from oz, the glorious revolution she imagined kinda a failure
glinda chooses to stay in large part because she is selfish, and willing to tolerate/ignore some level of injustice for her own benefit. there is a limit to how much glinda is willing to exploit others for her own good, but she's objectively more selfish than elphaba. a lot of the good she does it superficial. she's the ultimate liberal, i fear
and selfishness is what causes her to lose elphie and fiyero at the end of the musical. but because she's played the game, she's the only one left with any real political power. she's the one who ultimately overthrows the wizard and morrible, and she's the one who's able to do good
so wicked speaks to a fundamental contradiction in unjust power structures. gaining political power means you have to be selfish enough to ignore the suffering of others. standing against the system may be the morally correct thing to do, but it means giving up social capital within the system
wicked resolves this tension by arguing that you need elphaba and glinda, together, to bring about effective change. glinda ultimately tries to rule oz how elphaba would've wanted her to and in the name of fulfilling elphaba's dreams and honoring her. their love for each other is ultimately what changes them (and oz) for the better. they balance each other out, make up for each other's shortcomings
elphaba is what changes glinda and motivates her to stand against injustice, but they can only make effective change by utilizing the social capital she's accumulated, which is why elphie insists glinda doesnt clear her name
and honestly i think a lot of ppl are just hella disillusioned with institutional politics (which i mean can you blame them look at the state of america dawg) and see the only way forward irl as elphaba-esque revolution. and if you think that good on ya god speed but like that's not the message of wicked lol its just not. and i think a lot of glinda hate just comes down to not agreeing with wicked's message and contorting plot points in the musical to align with a certain worldview

@heropartnerweek Day 1 - Accessories
I've drawn both Sorrel and Astrid (from my fanfic Severed Link) with accessories before. Might as well show them buying them! (Nova is sitting that stop on their shopping trip out. Though he does have his bag as an accessory.)
I've also edited everyone's designs to a certain extent since the last time I showed them off. Sorrel's flower is the most noteworthy, but everyone has at least a couple new/changed markings. (Astrid's is the most subtle, especially in this form.)
