The little buddy effect: Defined as when you (usually a version of sonic or a character made to directly parallel Sonic) have a short best friend you cherish dearly. Anyone affected by the little buddy effect has the tendency to take to others of little buddy material or who remind them of their own little buddy very quickly. While generally (although not 100% of the time) the universe of Sonic the Hedgehog mandates each person affected by the little buddy effect gets to keep only one little buddy, this does not stop this person from trying. While all relationships come and go, the one between the affected and their little buddy is one to outlast them all (as long as the little buddy is properly cherished of course).

Another name for the "little buddy effect" is "the Tails effect.

Sorry, I'm reading Archie Sonic and it's like. So far in every Sonic media, none of the Sonics affected by the little buddy effect recognize the eternal bliss you may receive by cherishing the little buddy and giving them lil kisses (aka pursing at least a not completely platonic but also not famial relationship). In fact, sometimes they neglect the little buddy to pursue romance with a girl (that ultimately doesn't work out).

been on a bit of a sitcom kick recently and more than EVER i need a sonic sitcom in my life. its 6 am and i havent slept so this is just gonna be me infodumping abt a fun concept i think abt from time to time. cool? cool. shadow visiting amy and accidentally knocking over and shattering a vase at her house, vowing to do whatever she wants to pay for it. she doesn't care much so she has him spend a day doing favors for big instead, as she doesn't see him spending much time with anyone else in the gang. shadow grumpily wearing a "men want me fish fear me" hat fishing with big until he realizes that he genuinely adores taking it easy and the meditative trance it puts him in watching the sunlight dance on the water. b plot of sonic holding on to the back of metal sonic flying away after thwarting another one of eggman's plans and he just. falls into the water and shadow fishes him out with greater finesse and skill than big has EVER seen someone fish with. shadow is super embarrassed abt it and sonic teases him about it every chance he gets, always emphasizing that he did it to save him. the chaotix have a slow month at the detective agency and DESPERATELY need cash so they change gears to journalism to make ends meet. cue the worst vertical phone footage you've ever seen of the trio bugging knuckles to DEATH on angel island about the master emerald and it's powers and knuckles trying his absolute best to not throw them off head first for trying to make fast vapid content about something so important to him. once they realize they've upset him they pivot the footage into a really spottily edited documentary about knuckles' dedication to his title, and the episode ends with knuckles asking tails if there's a way to put an entire video on his fridge.

sonic and tails hear blaze is visiting from her dimension so they spend every second of the next few hours trying to spruce the place up, only for eggman to show up with a pack of badniks just to mess with them. desperate to end things quickly and keep all their hard work in tact, sonic charges at the badniks to clear them out with as little of a ruckus as possible. since he was so headstrong about dispatching them without considering the method, broken bot parts and debris end up all over the garage. blaze shows up just as the last metal sheet slides across the floor against her shoe and you can watch her own attempt at formality falter as she laughs so hard she falls over, and tails just stands there with his face buried in his hands. do u see it do u see my vision

i would like to know any novel gayemeralds thoughts about. knuckle <- predictable. (or mayhaps whoever non-shadow you’d like to talk about bc we’ve all heard enough about the corpse they keep dragging out for today)

thoughts on knuckles…… you know despite the fact he’s intimately connected to a million things in life i surprisingly don’t have a whole lot of thoughts on him. but I’ll give you my top three

1) i like to think he probably raised tails more than sonic did. classic sonic especially was not the type to be tied down, and i can’t see him being interested in basically raising a kid. he’d let tails tag along on adventures but i think tails spent a majority of his time hanging out with knuckles. knuckles was sort of annoyed at sonic just dropping tails off at his doorstep every few weeks but tails was eager to learn everything he could about Angel island and echidna culture and lore and knuckles was e static to find someone who would listen. knuckles had also just broken out of a 12ish year isolation period so the social contact with tails (after the mess with eggman and sonic, whom he still had very conflicting feelings on) was nicer than he would ever admit. knuckles and tails do hang out with each other outside of sonic, like in sonic heroes, so i like to imagine they really bonded during the classic era

2) to me the eventuality of the sonic franchise is that all the chaos energy eventually gets destroyed. so when that happens sonic chronicles has already taken place. echidnas have populated angel island and are taking proper care of it. the master emerald is gone. so i think knuckles, rouge, and amy eventually partner up to go treasure hunting for a few years, glob trotting the world in search of ancient history and artifacts. they spend a lot of their time trying to piece together ancient history (like the precursors, babylons, gaia temples, ancients, etc).

3) i kind of think knuckles should be in less games. he’s a very stationary character and it doesn’t make sense to involve him in adventures where the master emerald isn’t involved or the world isn’t completely ending. i think his duty vs desire conflict, wherein the master emerald keeps him stationary despite his own interest in travel/treasure hunting is a very important part of his character, and at the moment i wish they would explore that more if they keep having him in random games. that said i also kind of wish they would actually Use him more- like use the master emerald in games more, and by extension knuckles himself (to where it makes sense). that wasn’t coherent but like. i want knuckles around i just wish they would do a better job of why and maybe lean into how him being there is him being conflicted by his duty/desires instead of him just Being There.

bonus: i need a knuckles chaotix reboot right fucking now i have the perfect pitch for it (mighty and ray go missing and knuckles enlists the chaotix’s help to find them as their backstory)

amy is IN LOVE with egghog sonic. for better or for worse, she is devoted to him. she is convinced for a long time that love will change him somehow, make him different. and part of it is that she wants it to be her that fixes him. it's partially genuine concern, but is also a key piece of her ego.

amy's commitment to stopping eggman is its own kind of devotion, i think. the mutual knowledge that they have molded each other into who they have become, lives forever intertwined even if one of them ceases to exist.

tails, knuckles, rouge, the chaotix, everyone tells her that being this committed to sonic is a bad idea. that she's overworking herself for the sake of other people. she doesn't feel listened to or understood about this, not really. her devotion to other people isn't matched or accepted. (she does need to practice a little more self care though... having to be selfless all this time really does make one's self preservation instincts tank. the price of being a hero, i think)

then two robotniks end up in her partial care.

she understands them better than anyone else. she sees their love and pain, feels it fiercely, hurts for them. especially because a lot of what they feel is the same.

in the end, sonic crawling back to eggman doesn't stop amy from loving him. it doesn't stop her from wanting to take down eggman. she is still devoted.

the redeemed boys feel much of the same, seeing a loved one become so lost.

i think amy, shadow, and silver all need each other in this narrative. amy really needed someone who would not only understand but share her deep devotion. the boys need someone who will truly comprehend what being severed from people you love would feel like. better together, i think

Roles in THWDLM

Shadow takes on the same role as Paul. He's the guy who doesn't like musicals. He's the first to realize everyone singing constantly is weird, even by Mobius's standards. He teams up with his friends to figure out what's wrong and stop it- except, Sonic is missing. Hmm.

Rouge is Shadow's #1 ally, similar to Emma. However, rather than a romantic dynamic between the two, they're much like siblings. Just an immortal hedgehog and his older thief sister on their way to try to save the world.

Sonic and Amy are the Sam and Charlotte of this situation. Amy realizes Sonic isn't with the group, so everyone sets out to find him. He's saved the world so many times, no reason he can't do it now! Unfortunately, he's dead. He's a singing alien zombie, just like much of the town. He's already taken the Chaotix into the hivemind, and after getting his brain knocked out with a trash can lid by Knuckles, he's taking Amy down with him.

Knuckles is the brawn of the team. As long as he can stay alive, the group is safe, because he can fight the infected off the easiest without weapons. All he's gotta do is survive, and not dwell too much on the loss of his friends.

Vanilla and Silver follow the same role as each other. The day the hivemind infection broke out, Vanilla was out of the house, as Blaze took care of Cream and Marine. With insanely perfect timing, as soon as Vanilla realized the trio were on their own, Silver came in from the future in a panic, demanding to see Blaze. Vanilla and Silver agreed to make sure Blaze, Cream, and Marine were safe, and to take them into the group if they were. Unfortunately... they weren't, and soon Vanilla and Silver weren't either.

Tails and the Chaotix were working separately from each other for the same purpose- research the infection and stop it. They figured they could cover more ground if they were split up, but the Chaotix refused to leave each other, so the three would report their findings back to Tails. But when Sonic got the jump on the team, Tails was left alone to work. He realized that as the alien blood was infecting Mobian blood, the safest way to remove it would be Chaos Control- and even that proved useless. Stumped and panicking, Tails was frozen to his chair as the Chaotix broke down the door to the lab and attacked. Knuckles and Tails were in their hands, and Rouge barely made it out alive with Shadow.

Blaze and Marine had been called by the Sol Emeralds to Mobius a few days prior to the infiltration, much like how Silver's time travel called him because the past was in danger. However, whatever danger was to come hadn't showed its face yet, so the two stayed with Vanilla and Cream. Vanilla left for about an hour to get groceries, leaving Blaze in charge of taking care of both little girls. But in the time Vanilla was gone, she was forced into hiding with the group, as Blaze tried to keep everything under control. Her efforts to keep the infected away were useless, and she and Cream were infected. Marine quickly hid in the basement, locking the door behind her. When Vanilla and Silver arrived, Cream and Blaze attacked them. Now infected, they managed to coax Marine out of the basement and took her into the hivemind as well.

FANG THE HUNTER, ISSUE #2 - THOUGHTS

I once again find myself without TOO terribly much to say beyond, it was good, I liked it. Flynn's doing good writing, Rothlisberger and crew are doing good art, etc.

I, of course, loved the environments. Seeing Sandopolis Zone up close and personal was really cool, especially after we caught a couple tiny glimpses of it over in the Modern stories, but only ever as one small, barely visible part of the entire island.

I also really liked seeing Fang work his way through the tricks and traps of the actual level.

Really, Fang in general here waa really good! It was cool seeing how he operates deprived of his gang and watching him strategize his way around Knuckles on his own home turf!

Also, one weird little note, is Knuckles like... weirdly pale in this issue? Not really a complaint, just a thing I noticed. Maybe it's just me.

Then there's the B Plot of Sonic and Tails chasing down a strange aircraft that MIGHT be run by Eggman?

Again, the upcoming covers have already spoiled who's actually running the thing, but I'm sure there's more story to be had here.

What I find neat is that, when Sonic and Tails get close to the thing, it just... teleports away?

This is a Classic story, so this is, like... WAY before Chaos Control ever gets introduced as a concept.

It's probably not too much of a stretch that Fang's "eighth Chaos Emerald" is probably involved here. My current theory is that it's probably the Phantom Ruby, but I won't get into why for anyone who hasn't seen the upcoming covers and is avoiding those particular spoilers.

Back with Fang and co., I'm really interested to see Bean and Bark start to get truly fed up with Fang.

It all seems like it's building up to some conclusion where Fang learns to actually appreciate his allies and they see he actually cares and they go forward with their friendship renewed, but... I think they might not?

Hear me out, here, Ian Flynn stated on Twitter that this story takes place between Mania and Superstars.

Now, my personal interpretation of the story puts Mania and Superstars in different timelines - that's for another post - but I do find this look at the writer's intent interesting. In Superstars, we see Fang by himself. Bean and Bark aren't there. We've seen Fang alone before, but the three of them have been consistently shown as a group since the later Archie days. Even Modern Sonic still references them as a gang in Issue 3 of the main IDW series. But if the writers intend for this story to take place before Sonic Superstars, that means at some point, Fang has to end up alone.

I have a feeling that this whole arc may end with Bean and Bark, fully done with Fang's nonsense, really, ACTUALLY leaving him, and Fang setting forth by himself. A bit of a downer ending, to be sure, but I kinda like the idea, as it's not something we usually get to see from Sonic stories.

As we come up on the end of the Issue, we get another cool Classic setpiece, which I am told is Newtronic High Zone from Knuckles' Chaotix, a game I have not played much of.

It's neat that it's from that game, though, because...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this screen from SEGASonic the Hedgehog (the JP exclusive arcade game)? Is the implication here supposed to be that Miracle Island and Eggman Island are the same place? Who knows. I might just be wrong.

Anyway, it was a long wait, but I really did enjoy this one, and am, of course, excited for Issues 3 and 4, as well as the return to the main series with Issue 69 (nice) and the upcoming Riders arc!

With the sibling relationships, how much teasing and what kind do you think their is?

Like with Sonic and Tails its only snarky comments while the Chaotixs relentlessly bully eachother but only they're allowed to do so.

Sure! I can elaborate on this one!

I think Sonic started out teasing Tails a lot, but as Sonic got a bit more used to taking care of Tails, he eased off, as he could tell Tails was genuinely getting upset. As they've both gotten older, Tails' tolerance for tricks and games has increased, and he plays them on Sonic now, too, which Sonic loves. I think he is generally a guy happy to be the butt of the joke as long as everybody is laughing. Tails has a little bit of a mean streak, and sometimes retaliates disproportionately, and can get a little bit bitter when he's been fooled. He will grow out of it, probably helped by the gentle but consistent ribbing he gets from Sonic.

Knuckles is worse than Tails for getting sulky when he's bested, but doesn't actually retaliate much. I think Amy is maybe the person who can pull out the silliness from him best, as she is the right amount of Friend he can Trust + Friend he thinks can Take a Loving Smack.

Shadow only teases Rouge, and only when they are alone or with Omega. Rouge teases everyone, all the time, even when they don't know it.

I think the Chaotix have serious Silliness Escalation Issues, whereby a war will start over something initially tiny, and end with someone being thrown in the bin. I think theres always a contest going on somewhere in their house - often over Vector's pinboard being mucked with, random leaves added to Espio's fancy tea, Charmy's toys being moved by someone invisible, making him wet the bed... it's a dangerous place to be sensitive.

Y'all, there is not enough Team Chaotix love out there. Like come on, it's a big tough thug-looking guy, a moody ninja, and a literal child, running a detective agency together. Their found family dynamic is adorable and has so much potential for art and fics.

This is the story of how Vector and Espio found Charmy as a baby and decided to raise him. Ensue shenanigans of two tough dudes trying to figure out how on Mobius do they take care of a baby? It's technically an AU since I think there's an official backstory in the game "Knuckles's Chaotix," but I think it could mostly fit in with canon stuff. I have three chapters out so far and more on the way!

Both Issue 65 and the Halloween special came out a few days ago, and while I once again won't really be talking about the Halloween special, I will jump right into Issue 65!

So Knuckles finds the Babylon Rogues hanging out where he and Amy left the relic from earlier, but they end up beating him and taking it as well as the one that goes with it.

Unsure of where they went or what they're planning to do with them, Knuckles ends up going to the Chaotix to ask them to help him look for them, and they agree as long as they can finish in time to go to Vanilla and Cream's place after.

Vector deduces that since they first found the relic at the Eggperial City that the Babylon Rogues must have stolen it back for him, but when they go to Eggman's base to get them both back, he informs them that that is in fact not the case...

Later, Espio and Charmy get a lead to where the Babylon Rogues will be meeting their client to deliver the goods, and they're ready to intercept them before the meeting can take place.

Meanwhile, Vanilla and Cream are getting ready for their dinner with the Chaotix, but Vanilla sees that they've run out of butter and decides to leave for a little bit to get some more, leaving Cream to take care of the food while she's away. However, lurking in the bushes outside are a certain duo of skunk boys who are getting ready to cause hijinks...

Rough and Tumble then break into their house, but Gemerl finds them and starts fighting them before they take notice of Cream's presence and decide to take her hostage... just as the stove begins to engulf in flames.

And that's it for Issue 65!

if i recall correctly you’ve already been asked before about what would happen if either espio or silver turned against the other in rivals 2 because of the ifrit, but now i’m wondering - what would happen if they did actually turn on each other near the end of their own accord? like if, before getting to the final dimension hopping bit, one of them accidentally said or did something that either set the other off or make them question their companion’s true goal. kinda like a darkest hour moment before the action finale

That's indeed correct, I have a WIP fic about it in my folder (that's far from finished, but maybe I'll get back to it one day). Hmm, but as for them turning onto each other willingly... I find it very hard to imagine, to be quite honest. Espio is quite a honourable person who trusts Silver's statements about the future to be true, and Silver in turn seems to value Espio's efforts and helpfulness... But on the other hand, Espio is kinda a dick to some other characters in Rivals 2. He's very disregardful of Knuckles all of a sudden ("Hmph. Why should I care? Be gone!" to Knux when he asks if Espio saw Shadow or Eggman in Mystic Haunt Zone Act 1, Knuckles's story), rather forceful towards Tails in his statements that he'll stop Tails and Sonic from interfering, and of course he willingly steals Sonic's rings. Meanwhile, Silver is Silver, with all the blunt snappiness and short-tempered rude statements that come with it. So I don't think it's impossible that something could occur where Silver's hotheadedness and Espio's more crude nature clash. Now that I think about it, I'm not 100% sure if Silver is aware that Espio is technically actively chasing him down for the Chao-nappings: he says Espio's a strange one and doesn't bat an eye at Espio accusing him as the perpetrator, but the fact the Chaotix got hired for this is not brought to his attention, as far as I know. If he found out, I can see a possibility that he doesn't like how deep Espio is into this whole case and how Espio's first goal was chasing him down.

So, that is a thing wherein Silver can question Espio's true goals, perhaps. But vice versa I cannot see Espio begin to doubt Silver's motives, because Silver is just that blunt and honest about what he's doing and why, haha. Espio seems to be a good enough judge of character to figure Silver's not a liar. Hmm, I also doubt that they'd really get into an argument about how to solve the crisis they're in: Silver runs headfirst into trouble to fight it, but Espio is noted to thrive on danger and seek out treacherous situations to train and grow stronger. Either of them calling out the other for being reckless would be a tad hypocritical. So overall, I think a potential clash could be mostly because Espio is not revealing his true ulterior motive to Silver iirc, or perhaps because the worse aspects of their personalities come to a head and they begin bickering or similar. And as for what would happen if they were to turn on each other, I like to think they would make up again, because both Silver and Espio are kind people at their core and there's a crisis they need to solve together. But I can see it take a lot of effort from both to mend that gap formed between them!

dunno where else to say it so. Kyo sonic au shit I’ve had rattling in my brain ;

- the eggman was created in a freak lab accident involving a chaos emerald; the radiation created a split personality in ivo robotnik, with the two struggling for control

- Metal sonic (prime) had a “good half” the ivo part installed- a conscience. Much like eggman, Metal sonic was plagued by contradicting directives… until, much like himself, eggman split metal in two

- sonic isn’t the Big Public Hero Number One. While he’s certainly heard of as the fastest thing alive (and Eggman’s archenemy), the freedom fighters get more recognition than him. Sonic doesn’t care but it drives eggman up the wall

- Angel island is still populated by echidnas, their Imperator being Ix. Knuckles fell from his home when he was young, and has been searching for a way back ever since

- the super special sonic search and smash squad is made up of Eggman’s three previous sonic robots; silver sonic, robo sonic, and led by mecha sonic. Though they have loyalties to eggman, they aren’t directly connected to the Eggnet like lesser badniks, only tuned into it like a radio station. It means they, most of the time, are off doing their own thing.

- sir Charles hedgehog takes in the good metal sonic after it flees from eggman, and helps repair him into shard. shard still has his combat functions, but would rather be part of rescue services like firefighters or extraction

- shadow is half-hedgehog, half-black arms. his power is unstable, and has to be held in check by his inhibitor belt. rouge is a former G.U.N. spy, and E-123 Omega is a violent cousin to robotnik’s E-Series robots. they answer to no authority, and help or harm whoever they want (though in the end, they’re ultimately a force of good)

- as I mentioned the e-series were built by robotnik (NOT eggman), and are instead learning robots meant to aid in research and sample gathering. Omega and Beta were both yoinked by eggman to create weapons, but only omega was able to escape his ultimate fate. Beta was robo-lobotomized. Gamma has learned to fight out of necessity, from Amy rose’ cousin Rob. He acts as a sniper instead of a front-liner.

- E-Merl is a lost echidna weapon that’s roamed the world for centuries. Despite being created with the capacity to destroy entire civilizations, E-Merl has a child-like personality and is easily roped into others’ schemes. The deception always ends in broken bones, however.

- G-Merl is an updated Gizoid designed by Shade. Like Gamma, he despises fighting- *unlike* gamma, he refuses to use any offensive weapons altogether. His most dangerous gadget is a taser.

- humans and anthro animals have been in contact for ages. The anthro animals (coined ‘mobians’) first called humans Overlanders, due to first contact being via crashing aircraft.

- the Black Arms are a roaming alien race, facing extinction. all they want is a home, but their way of life can be brutish and distressing. Shadow was created to be an envoy between the two worlds, but something happened to the Black Arms since then; they haven’t returned in 50 years. Shadow remains vigilant

- both shadow and Maria escaped the ark, but Maria’s disease caught up to her on earth. Shadow still holds his final promise to her. Due to being on earth for *much* longer than in canon, he’s come to understand both the good and evil in humanity. His greatest mission is to save the last living robotnik from his own alter ego.

- omega’s pissed all the time because eggman Fucked Up his reprogramming. Omega loves to make noise, be it from explosions or making actual music. He has more of a ‘bad boy’ persona than ‘DESTROY ALL EGGMAN ROBOTS’

- the chaotix are a much larger group, containing the duo of mighty and ray, alongside bomb and heavy. Knuckles is also an honorary member.

- if sonic could choose any adversary to keep personally, it’s the SSSSSS. mostly because they don’t really hate sonic, and their schemes and traps are always fun to evade.

- tails doesn’t know what pronouns are

Blaze: 14 but from another dimension? she wouldn’t go to rouges club anyway. rouge doesn’t know much about her and she’s a princess, and honestly she’s pretty chill and wouldn’t cause any problems, so rouge would let her in

Chaos: i mean he is over 4000 years old but also he has no form of id. Rouge would let him in just to see what would happen

Shadow: chronologically he’s legal but physically he’s not. Rouge lets him in sometimes and only supervised. He doesn’t really like the club anyway; too loud and bright

Metal sonic: a robot so? no real age? rouge would let him in though just to cause problems, especially if sonic was there at the same time.

Omega: a robot so? no real age? rouge lets him in but only with supervision or he might “accidentally” destroy the whole club

Eggman: i mean. he wouldn’t go to her club but if he did… rouge would probabaly let him in out of curiosity, especially if sonic was also there

Eggman Nega: i mean he’s technically of age but he also hasn’t been born yet so. rouge is a spy and would notice he’s nega, not Eggman, so she might let him in anyway. i mean there’s no parties in the future probabaly so might as well let the guy live a little. maybe he won’t be a dick then

Cheese: okay. rouge isn’t going to admit she knows anything about chao. i guess if chaos can come in then so can cheese. but cheese wouldn’t be separated from cream, who’s definitely not allowed.

There’s an analogue clock on Amy’s wall.

It’s hung just above her fireplace, in her living room, black hands displaying the time- 10:35 P.M. At least, Silver thinks it’s somewhere around 10:35? Reading those things are difficult and he has little practice with them.

It’s old, Silver thinks, even for this time period. It’s a clock he’s only ever seen in ancient books and torn pictures unearthed in rubble. It’s shaped like a box, but crafted to look… fancy. A fancy box. Red paint peeling and chipping away to reveal the brown wood underneath.

It’s nice. Silver can admire the details and the fancy swooshes at the corners and the bronze swinging thing in the middle behind a glass barrier. Blaze would have better words to describe it; she’s always been the more knowledgeable about these types of things. Too bad she’s handling responsibilities in her own world right now.

Tick tick tick.

When he walks through the threshold, it’s the first thing his eyes go to. A nice clock, really, Silver isn’t one to criticize his friends’ furniture and home- but he could do without the subtle noise that it makes every second. Each second, the thin red hand moves, ticking and ticking in a way that gets under his skin after too long.

Silver cringes as he sits down on Amy’s couch, next to Knuckles. The scrapes on his elbows hurt and the back of his hands burn like they always do whenever he overexerts his powers.

[Amy’s called a meeting with everyone at her home at the edge of town. Knuckles, The Chaotix, Silver, even Sticks.

Well, almost everyone. Rouge and Omega have already been contacted, and Tails and Sonic are nowhere to be found. It’s deathly quiet when she sits them all down in her living room and passes out the first aid supplies. She hangs her head low, and Knuckles thinks the battle must have shaken her up more than usual.

She looks like she’s been crying.]

Silver hisses while applying an ice pack to his bruised leg.

“Have all the evacuees made it out of town?” Espio asks. Silver turns to look at him. He’s to the right, sitting down in front of the pink loveseat where Charmy and Vector are. Right in front of the fireplace, right below the clock.

Amy nods, putting the first aid kit on the coffee table in the middle of the room. She takes a seat in front of them, in a peach chair that looks like it needs serious upholstering.

“Good, we should focus on our next move,” Espio dabs antiseptic onto a scrape on Charmy’s knee. The bee whines. “Eggman’s not wasting any time.”

“Yeah,” Vector gripes. Silver sees him flinch when he presses an ice pack to a bump on his head. His headphones and gold chain have been tossed to the side. “And he’s got a real bad team with him this time. I mean, did you guys see that masked guy?”

They did. It was fast. Silver couldn’t get a hit in no matter how hard he tried, couldn’t even keep him still with his telekinesis. He’s still sour about that. He glares at the floor like Amy’s cream carpet will give him forgiveness.

Tick tick tick

Besides Silver, Knuckles removes his gloves roughly. Silver wisely chooses to tilt away from Knuckles before he elbows him without thinking. “Chaos was there,” Knuckles says while applying a heart patterned band-aid on his palm. He frowns ruefully at them. “But I don’t get how or why. He’s supposed to be on Angel Island.”

“What the heck was Zavok doing here, too?” Sticks calls from the floor somewhere to Silver’s left. “I thought Sonic took care of him and his goons months ago!”

Zavok isn’t someone Silver has any real personal experience with, but he was a formidable opponent.

“Metal Sonic was mean…” Charmy whines.

The ice pack he’s pressing on his knee doubles as a balm to his aching hand. It’s white and nothing much, but Silver frowns at it all the same.

Metal Sonic was his usual fast and unflinching robotic self. Was that other guy, the one with the mask, a robot too? They shared similar traits…

“…We saw Shadow as well,” Espio mumbles.

There’s a pause in the air- a tense silence that hangs and goes on for too long- almost overpowering.

Tick tick tick tick

Silver chances a glance around the room and sees that everyone else is looking at the floor, at the walls, at their own hands, like that will give them any sort of answer. No one really knows what to say about their friend who turned enemy again.

[Knuckles knows what he would say, but he’s been told he can’t say those words around Charmy.]

When Shadow had first teleported beside him in the middle of battle, Silver had expected assistance. He hadn’t even considered the possibility of Shadow being a threat! That’s why he was completely caught off guard when Shadow grabbed him by the quills and flung him meters away.

This isn’t his time period, he’s so out of his element again, he doesn’t know. It’s frustrating that he doesn’t. Frustrating that he hesitated before engaging in battle against a former ally. He would fist his hands in anger if they weren’t aching so much.

Silver flinches when Knuckles balls his fists and growls. The hearts on his palm bunch up and wrinkle.

“Forget this!” Knuckles says. “We don’t have time to wonder why Shadow’s bad again or why so many of our enemies are back. Whatever’s going on, it’s nothing some good old-fashioned force and teamwork can’t fix. I mean, how strong can they be? We’ve beaten them once already!”

[That has them lifting their heads a little bit. Knuckles sees Vector smile, and Silver sit up just a bit straighter. Good.]

Silver feels himself smile, despite everything. Right. They just need some time to reorganize, is all. Even after that rough battle and loss, Knuckles still looks tough; ready for the next fight. He’s a good person, Silver thinks. He’s grateful he has these people now. Grateful he has someone like Knuckles to rely on.

Tick tick tick.

[Amy still seems down though. Hm.]

Probably feeling bold, Knuckles smirks and raises a fist. “So they got the upper hand today. Big deal! Just some luck on their part that we’re a little rusty. I, for one, can’t wait to head back out there and show them that no matter how much muscle they bring, we’ll always be stronger.”

Sticks sits up. “Knuckles is right-”

[Heh, as always.]

“-for once-”

[Wait what?]

Sticks [rudely] ignores Knuckles’ indignant growls, and Silver has to hide his laugh behind a cough. Charmy doesn’t hide his at all. “-But we’re gonna hafta decide on a plan fast, because with Shadow on his team, there’s no telling how much time we’ve got! That guy will cover so much ground like nobody’s business!”

Speaking of fast…

Switching the ice pack from one hand to another, Silver looks at Amy, who’s sitting on her armchair and staring resolutely at her hands folded in her lap. “Were you able to track down Sonic and Tails?”

Amy’s muzzle moves with a thick swallow.

“I-” she begins, and then glances to one corner of the room. “I- found Tails. He’s, um- he’s in my room right now. Resting.”

Tick tick tick tick

Had Tails been a part of the battle without them realizing? Silver feels a pang of worry go through him thinking about young Tails, going into battle against such powerful foes, completely unprepared. At least Amy’s taken care of him now.

[She keeps blinking. She’s trying to keep her eyes from watering. Knuckles stops paying attention to everyone else in the room, focusses solely on her. His own heartbeat is loud in his ears.]

“What about Sonic?” Charmy’s high voice pipes up.

They need Sonic. Silver frowns and thinks. Where was Sonic during the battle? Taking care of Tails? He’s always been pretty protective of him.

Once they get Sonic and the rest of the team here, they can figure something out. Like Knuckles said. Nothing they haven’t done before. Silver lets himself feel a little bit of hope, lets the ball of anxiety in his chest turn into anticipation.

Keep a cool, level head. Just like Knuckles, who’s not saying anything and is looking at Amy. Looking for the next step.

[Knuckles doesn’t think anyone else is watching Amy as intently as he is, he feels like he’s the only one who sees how unnaturally stiff she’s become. Sees how she fiddles with the tassels of her throw pillow.]

“We didn’t see him anywhere!”

[Knuckles is suddenly struck with a familiar sensation. A stomach-dropping, time stopping one. He’s been here before.

Why? Why does he feel like this? Amy hasn’t even said anything, but he already feels like- like she’s told them-]

“He’s… Sonic is-”

Is what? Is he hurt? Silver blinks and tilts his head forward. Amy cares a lot about Sonic’s well-being. That must be what’s gotten her so bad.

Tick tick tick tick

[Amy takes in short, quivering breaths. Like she’s trying to keep herself together- like she’s seconds from falling apart.

Knuckles knows immediately where she’s going.]

Everyone’s looking at Amy now. No doubt wondering what’s got her pausing and why she looks so tense. Amy takes a deep breath brings her gaze up- not looking at anyone specifically, Silver thinks. She’s looking but- she’s not? How is that even possible?

[It’s familiar. It reminds Knuckles of the day he realized his tribe wasn’t coming back.

…Is that what it is? Maybe it’s something else entirely.]

What’s this déjà vu? Silver is struck by an image- fuzzy and almost a memory- that flashes in front of him. For a second, he thinks he sees Sonic. On the ground and surrounded by- by- something. Someone? A purple and black sky overhead, twisting and distorting, as he and his friends surround- something-

It’s gone. The memory- memory?- is gone a moment later, barely a whisper of a thought left when Silver tries to prod at it.

Amy sniffs, and Silver zeroes in again.

“Sonic is no longer with us.”

Tick.

What?

“…What?” He hears someone- Vector- ask.

Amy closes her eyes, and now Silver can see her clearly. Her jaw is stiff, her hands are shaking, and her back is so straight he thinks she must be in pain.

“What do you mean?”

Is it just him, or is everyone’s eyes too dry all of a sudden?

A ringing in his ear, sharp and growing, almost drowns out everyone’s words. Except for Amy’s. Amy’s words as she explains that- that Sonic was there. He was there before everyone else, along with Tails.

“…Tails saw it happen… -one with the mask- ended his life right in front of him-” Amy is saying, but Silver’s not really hearing. “Early this morning-”

Tick tick tick

He can’t hear because- because of the ringing in his ear. Subtle, but still there. And- and the clock. And- Has the light always been that bright? Have his lips always been this chapped? The room was warm before. A nice place to be during a cold night. Now it’s suffocating. His fur is uncomfortable. And blinking- it’s such a weird motion, isn’t it. He’s never thought about that before.

Amy’s still talking. “…found Tails in his room- scared- … neck was snapped-”

Breathing- breathing is weird too. He’s never noticed. He’s hyper aware of every breath and the way it fills his lungs because it will never fill Sonic’s ever again.

Tick tick tick

Has the clock always been that loud?

[There’s a strange air in the room. Like all of this is not quite real, but Knuckles is hyper-aware of every one of his senses. The bruises on his arms and legs and the way the bandages hug his injuries. The way his heart is thumping in his chest.

He’s aware of the way Silver’s become deathly still beside him. How Charmy’s cries sound and the shuffling noise Vector makes when he goes to hug the kid.

He doesn’t turn to look at any of them, but he can feel.]
