Note
Okay, this is very specific but I saw #4 and all I could think of was the fics where Fo Ye and Ba Ye were deaged to toddlers, so maybe something there, if inspiration is cooperative?
Let's just not talk about how long that ask was in my askbox or how long the half-written prompt was in my drafts. Let's just cheer the fact that i'm apparently on a writing spree today :D
Little bit of context: so this is set in a 'verse where something happened to Ba Ye at one point and he came back not quite right. And then some undetermined time later, him and Fo Ye got de-aged somehow.
I hope you enjoy this :D
4. “Don’t mess with me, I’m a big boy now and I’m very scary”
Rishan knew it was a mistake to leave the safety of the manor. But after a week of constant anxiety and worrying, his judgment had definitely been impaired.
Even if it had started off with good intentions.
He might not have the first clue about how to take care of toddlers, but he can recognize when someone is getting antsy with boredom. Especially Fo Ye and Ba Ye. And that's without mentioning that with them being much younger versions of themselves, they are even easier to read than usual.
It's not like he had been worried they would cause him any trouble either. Yes, they are playful as children, especially once Tiezui had managed to coaxed Qishan out of his stoic shell, but they are also very obedient. And since whatever has reverted them back to toddlers also seemed to have an effect on Tiezui's singular condition, he didn't even have to concern himself with what potential mayhem would result from him having a tantrum.
Not that he seems inclined to fits of bad temper at all. He is a sweet child and even as an adult, Tiezui is rather well-behaved all things considered. It's just that with this new condition of his, it is nearly impossible to stop him once he starts losing control.
But that's not a problem with Tiezui as a toddler. His main reaction whenever he has been displeased with something had been to pout. And if it has indeed convinced Rishan a couple of times to give into whatever he wanted over the week, well, he would dare any man to resist those puppy eyes, especially when Qishan starts copying him too.
Nevertheless, leaving the manor had been a bad idea. Even with Er Ye's manor being his intended destination and how much he trusts him implicitly with their safety, actually going there comes with its own risks.
Even now that the war is over, Fo Ye still has enemies. And only a fool would think they have managed to keep his currently vulnerable state entirely secret.
But Rishan had been confident he could protect them easily against any threat, especially under the cover of the fog that had risen over the city. And maybe in usual circumstances he would have been right.
But defending two grown men who knew how to get out of the way is very different from defending two very scared toddlers.
He has been doing a decent job so far keeping their attackers away from the children, but there are simply too many of them. Rishan is a good fighter, but even he has his limits.
He takes his attention off their attackers for a precious moment to tell Qishan to grab Tiezui's hand and run. Qishan might not be able to help him fight right now, but he is still a Zhang. Even if he is so very young, Rishan is painfully aware what his childhood has been like. If Rishan can give them a good head-start, if he can distract their attackers long enough, then they've got a chance to get away and hide.
As much as it breaks his heart that Qishan doesn't hesitate a moment to obey Rishan's order, he's grateful to see them disappear into the fog. They're gonna be safe. He'll make sure of it.
Not that he can spare them any more thoughts after that.
He can only fight and continue to try to thin out the number of his attackers.
Unfortunately, he's been outnumbered since the beginning. It was only a question of time before exhaustion and pain slowly got the better of him.
He's too late to block a blow to his temple and he feels himself tumble backwards, losing his balance, knowing he'll fall.
It's that, more than the pain that makes him wince.
Once he's on the ground, it's over. He won't be getting back up and he knows it.
Except he never does fall.
Instead he feels his back make contact with a strong chest, two arms coming around his waist to hold his weight easily.
"I've got you Rishan."
Now, Rishan had never truly lost hope that he would get Fo Ye and Ba Ye back to their adult selves. But given the circumstances, he can certainly be forgiven that hearing Fo Ye voice again has him this close to weeping in relief.
But relieved or not, Rishan is still ever the protector and if he knows that Fo Ye is safe at his back, that doesn't tell him where Tiezui is. If it was any other time, he wouldn't worry, because Fo Ye wouldn't be so calm if he thought Ba Ye was in any kind of danger, but this is not any other time. Who knows what Fo Ye remembers of their current situation.
Even as Fo Ye is backing them away to safety, fear starts rising in his throat unbidden, as he tries to ascertain through the fog that all their attackers are still in front of him and none has managed to sneak past somehow.
Sudden terrified screaming from behind lets him know that at least one man had gone after the children when Rishan was making his last stand.
But this is not Tiezui's voice abruptly cutting off in a disgusting gurgle.
The few men left standing are clearly getting nervous now as they very well should be.
It's a well-known secret something happened to Ba Ye some time ago and he came back slightly different. Most people assumed it was trauma.
Those who have ever learned otherwise never lasted long enough to let anyone know how wrong that assumption is.
A body flies past them a few seconds before Ba Ye emerges from the fog, his teeth bared in what no one in their right mind would think of as a smile. It's not even a threat. It's a promise.
Still, he doesn't attack at once, instead stopping by their side, something that could be worry flashing in his eyes as he glances over Rishan's body. Whatever it was, it's soon replaced with cold fury.
Ba Ye turns his attention back to their attackers and usually Rishan would at least try to stop what he knows is coming next. It's hard to muster the energy to care now however. And it's not even because he got hurt. He's never really cared about that.
It's because they've tried to come at defenceless children. And they nearly succeeded in it too.
Now, they get to deal with a grown up Ba Ye. A different Ba Ye.
And if Rishan knows anything about him, it's that he won't even let those men have the time to regret their attack today.

5 Favourite Characters Poll (Tag Game)
I was tagged by my lovely friend @forerussake and also by @lunanoc, thank you and sorry it took me so long!
Rules: make a poll with five of your all time favourite characters and then tag five people to do the same. See which character is everyone's favourite.
Oh dear, I've never made a poll, let's see if I can manage this...
Gosh this was hard... The moment I opened this poll my head was filled with just white noise and "Is there another character I like besides Zhang Rishan...?" (and characters I loved but chose to get rid of because of certain authors....)
Okay, who to tag... @sunriseverse, @s1utspeare, @elletromil, @mejomonster, @lacommunarde if any of you want to do this and haven't done it already (I wasn't on here for the last 3 weeks or so, so I have no idea).

So I'm gonna hold out on an Official Opinion on Zhang Rishan, the character, until I read the Mystic Nine book, but the actor who plays him? Zhang Ming'en?
I am absolutely, definitely a fan.
Like. The way he plays him, you can tell that this in a very old man in a young body. The body-language, the weird little sniffles, all of it.
Even the figthing style he was given: contrary to the much more fiery and energetic Xiaoge, Rishan just can't be arsed. He fights exactly like Cohen the Barbarian and his Silver Horde is described in the Discworld books: no hurry, zero superflous movements, just always conveniently out of the way of any hits and weapons.
Also the 'Liang Wan impersonates Zhang Rishan' sequence was flawless, I loved every second of it.
Hats off, sir!

DMBJ Entry Level Fanwork Recs
Following on from this post a few people asked for some recs for fanworks they can read to get a better handle on the fandom and the characters if they don't know much about what DMBJ is about
This is by no means a definitive list, and I'd suggest checking the tags on any fanworks to make sure it's something you'd enjoy before you dive in.
I have my own personal preferences when it comes to favourite characters and ships and while I've tried to throw a bit of everything in here this is a fandom that loves its rarepairs and poly ships so I can't cover everything.
Please, by all means drop me an ask or a reply if you have any questions. I'm always willing to drag new people into the pits with me
A couple of things to start off with:
@foxofninetales has written a very useful list of possible entry points to the fandom
And if you want a very brief overview of the main players (this franchise has So Many characters it's totally okay to be confused) I wrote one over on Dreamwidth at the start of the year
Okay, to try and organise this in some sort of coherent way I'm going to break it up into canon fanworks and AU fanworks. Sometimes an AU is a better way to get to know the characters, or you might want to get a feel for the canonical settings. Reader's choice.
Then I'll break it down into ships in case Fox's guide has got you interested in something specific
Canon
Wu Xie/Zhang Qiling
Keepsakes Box by ShenWeiLightning
When Zhang Qiling loses his memories, the Zhang family attempt to whitewash Wu Xie from his world. Only the box he instructed they give him as a precaution was never checked for compartments and some of the pictures hidden inside, lead to certain conclusions...
The POV character has amnesia so you learn things along with him
Tabula Rasa by xantissa
Zhang Qiling forgets. Then he comes to some interesting conclusions regarding his relationship to the man named Wu Xie.
Another amnesia fic so same thing applies as above. I'm pretty sure this was the first fic I read in this fandom myself.
Visible to All But Me by Hils
“To the merging of the Wu and Zhang families,” his uncle toasts with a raise of his glass. "It's not what I'd hoped for in terms of securing the future of our family, as you know, but at least it's better than nothing."
Wu Xie blinks at him and raises his glass to take a drink while he tries to figure out what’s happening. There aren’t that many members of the Zhang family that his uncle has had dealings with. Xiaoge would have mentioned something if he’d entered into some sort of arrangement with his uncle. Perhaps his Ershu has made some sort of business deal with Zhang Rishan.
OR
Five times Wu Xie didn't know he was dating Zhang Qiling but everyone else did, and one time he figured it out (with some help)
Yes, it's probably poor netiquette to self-rec but this is hands down my most popular DMBJ fic and it's mostly just about Wu Xie being oblivious with no real ties to the canon plot
Liu Sang/Wu Xie/Zhang Qiling
Cat's Paw by Merinnan & Xantissa
While some very basic knowledge of The Lost Tomb Reboot is needed for this, you mostly find out what's happening through Liu Sang's perspective so it's not entirely necessary.
Wang Pangzi/Wu Xie/Zhang Qiling
A Distracting Effort by elenothar
“Teensy tiny favour,” Hei Xiazi starts, with the kind of grin that says he knows he’s about to stir some shit and is looking forward to it. “I need someone to distract Zhao Ji and you” – he points at Wu Xie – “happen to be exactly his type.”
Wu Xie blinks. That’s… not what he’d been expecting.
Next to him Pangzi looks like he’s readying himself to bristle in protective outrage at any moment now and across the room Xiaoge’s relaxed sprawl has turned into something rather more threatening.
or
Hei Xiazi has opinions on Wu Xie's wardrobe, Wu Xie has opinions on interior decorating, Pangzi has opinions on Wu Xie's flirting and Xiaoge lurks protectively (and pointedly).
While this is not about tomb raiding it is exactly the sort of nonsense that happens in canon on a regular basis
Reunion to Rain Village by achray, hils, teyla and fangirlishness
A series of stories that are all standalone but are all set in and around our shared version of Yucun. The stories are not connected beyond some background themes and characters.
The only thing you really need to know is that the canon franchise ends with the three main characters retiring to a country village to run a restaurant and live in a house that Wu Xie designed and built for them. This series is set during that time but apart from that no canon knowledge is needed.
Hei Xiazi/Xie Yuchen
Why does it have to be you? by blackwatervial
It’s common knowledge that, if a delicate flower finds itself in a dire situation, a knight in shining armour will come to the rescue. Only that Xie Yuchen is no delicate flower, and his knight in shining armour is more of an overpriced mercenary.
This fic is only short but it perfectly covers everything you need to know about their relationship
Gen
Cascade by frith_in_thorns
Liu Sang didn't need looking after. Absolutely not. It had only been a small stabbing.
Unfortunately, Wu Xie overrode him.
Even more unfortunately, that was only the start of everyone's problems.
An excellent tomb raiding adventure with plenty of whump, misunderstandings and tomb nonsense
Take a Cup Of Kindness Yet by fox_of_nine_tales
There are several reasons Liu Sang doesn’t drink, and all of them are true.
I'm trying not to make this rec post entirely about Liu Sang because, as I mentioned in my DW post he's really only in one of the dramas/books. But he's very popular in my corner of the fandom so...
AU
Wu Xie/Zhang Qiling
Those who fear darkness have never seen what light can do by Merinnan & Xantissa
When Wu Xie was seven years old, he snuck away from his guardian during one of the digs that Sanshu took him to. Only things went wrong, the entrance collapsed, and it took a week to dig the child out from the near collapsed tomb.
They expected a body. They prayed that the child had somehow survived, but seven days without food or water for an adult would have been deadly, a child had no chances of survival at all.
They found Wu Xie deep in the tomb, sleeping on his little backpack. He was warm and healthy, confused at why the adults were yelling, looking like he’d just stepped into the tomb five minutes ago.
An alternate first meeting where Zhang Qiling is a supernatural creature.
A Swiftly Tilting Planet by slutspeare
Yincangui is Where Lost Things Return, and Wu Xie, captain of the Wushanju , has been trying to find it since his uncle went missing fifteen years ago. The only thing is that no one is quite sure that it actually exists, except for Liu Sang, who manages to finagle his way onto Wu Xie's ship and into their quest. Without any solid proof or idea of where they're going, it seems like Yincangui is always going to be a lost dream... unless the crew of the Wushanju can unravel the threads of the universe and lead themselves to what they've been searching for.
Absolutely stunningly written space AU where no real prior knowledge of canon is needed.
Liu Sang/Wu Xie/Zhang Qiling
Catch and Release by Merinnan & Xantissa
After weeks of being on the run from the people who'd been experimenting on him, Liu Sang was cold, hungry, and still hiding as a fox. When he came across a live capture trap in a large garden, baited with good, good food, he decided it was worth the risk. Then kept coming back again. And again.
Wu Xie just wanted to catch and socialise a feral cat into a pet. He hadn't planned on a fox deciding the trap he'd put out was a convenient and consistent source of food.
There's a lot of fics in this fandom where Liu Sang can turn into a fox. It's entirely down to this Liu Chang photoshoot so I figured I'd put one in here as a taster. Plenty more where that came from if you like it
Hei Xiazi/Xie Yuchen
Ad Hoc Services by fox_of_nine_tales
If assumptions make an ass out of you and me, well, why let a perfectly good ass go to waste?
In which Hei Xiazi is mistaken for a prostitute and his evening just gets better from there.
This might be an AU but it perfectly encapsulates how ridiculous these two idiots are
Vids
If you're more of a visual person these vids are a taster of what the fandom is all about (also linked in my DW post if you've already looked at that). It's a mixture of general fandom vibes and ship specific vids (and one solely about Pangzi because I love him)

This is just a very small sample to get you going. If you're not in the fandom and this has piqued your interest feel free to let me know and I can try and put together a more specific rec list for what you like
If you are in the fandom, feel free to reblog with any additions that you think should be on the list. This is only intended to be a sampler.

you know what tho, props to these guys but especially wu lei, for making me care about characters that are neither wu xie nor xiaoge. in particular i am subsisting during a long wu xie-less stretch of episodes during which these teenagers have done not much more than receive large numbers of inconvenient parcels with objectionable contents, and yet i am still fairly engaged* in the drama *(but if zhang rishan doesn't kiss the doctor soon i might lose my damn mind)

Small Fandom Summer Update
I felt like running the numbers on Small Fandom Summer, the thing where I'm trying to write a fic every 1-2 weeks, schedule permitting, for a fandom that has fewer than 1000 English-language works in it on AO3. Bonus points for rarepairs!
It's been going pretty well! Here's what I got so far:
The Rightful Ruler (少年歌行 | The Blood of Youth - 106 total works, 50 English) - Lei Wujie/Xiao Se (25 total, 4 English - and of those four, this is the only one that actually contains content for this pairing)
The Doctor is In (心宅猎人 | Psych-Hunter - 25 total works, all in English) - I tagged it as Jiang Shuo/Qin Yiheng (22 total), but it's really just Qin Yiheng/Original Male Character (the only one!) with extra Jiang Shuo voyeurism
A Single Explosion (终极笔记 | Ultimate Note - 652 total works, 509 English) - Pangzi & Xiao Ge (64 total) or Pangzi/Xiao Ge (68 total), depending on how you read it
Dog (伪装者 | The Disguiser - 1,382 total works; 128 English) - Ah Cheng/Ming Lou (517 total, 39 English)
And I am green, and you are wood (沙海 | Tomb of the Sea - 1,303 total works, 519 English; 老九门 | Old Nine Gates - 650 total works, 270 English) - Qi Tie Zui/Zhang Rishan (167 total, 98 English), Liang Wan/Zhang Rishan (44 total, 38 English), Liang Wan/Qi Tie Zui/Zhang Rishan (4 total, all English)
Stay (괴물 | Beyond Evil - 1,165 total works, 877 English) - Oh Jihwa/Yu Jaeyi (8 total, 6 English, and so far as I can tell, mine's the only one where they bone)
Little Spear (少年歌行 | The Blood of Youth) - Sikong Qianluo/Xiao Se (11 total, all English, and mine's the only one rated above Teen)
动须相应 (棋魂 | Hikaru no Go - 653 total works, 129 English) - Shi Guang/Yu Liang (233 total, 77 English)
One Quiet Night (킹덤 | Kingdom - 218 total works, 191 English) - Lee Chang/Yeongshin (105 total, 89 English) and Lee Chang/Seobi/Yeongshin (6 total, all English)
Not that I usually play around in huge fandoms or anything, but it's been kind of startling to get in there and realize just how much of a ghost town some of these places are.
Then again, this has been good for me, in a way. I hate the sensation of feeling like I'm screaming into the void, so it's been a worthwhile lesson in accepting from the start that I'm basically going to be screaming into the void, and then doing it anyway. Like, maybe someday, some weary future traveler will stumble upon these leavings and be grateful that there are twenty-five total stories for them to read instead of twenty-four. But for right now, if I want validation, man, I should not be expecting to find it here.
Anyway, we'll see what else I can get up to. Besides repeats of the above, fandoms that might get swept up in this project, depending on my mood, include 七爷 | Qi Ye (408 total works, 308 English), 손 The Guest (230 total works, 132 English), 君子盟 | A League of Nobleman (84 total works, 35 English), 风起陇西 | The Wind Blows from Longxi (26 total works, and if you exclude crossovers, it brings the number down to 8 total, none of which are in English).
Here's to making someone, somewhere out there obscurely happy.

Luci's ask game of the night: Favorite DMBJ character (right answer) and one-sentence explanation (wrong answers only)
Zhang Rishan, because someone in this secret organization of tomb raiders has to keep the kids in line.
For real though this was hard bc i was like ‘who is my favourite dmbj character? wait, who is my favourite dmbj character?? do i have a favourite dmbj character??? And for a good solid 15 minutes the only answer i could come up with was specifically Reboot Wu Xie (true), because Zhu Yilong plays him (also true)… Do with that what you will.

twenty questions for fic writers!
tagged by the lovely @sunriseverse, thank you dear!
And I'll also do my tagging up here so you don't have to work your way through all my blabbering :) @s1utspeare, @forerussake, @kholran, @lacommunarde, @adelaiderowan, @elletromil if any of you want to do this!
The questions (and my answers) are below the cut :)
1. how many works do you have on ao3?
12
2. what's your total ao3 word count?
541,787 since september 2021
3. what fandoms do you write for?
at the moment only dmbj and basically only fuba, I have two (and a half) Stranger Things WIPs, but I don't know if I'll ever get back to them. Also there are some original works floating around.
4. top five fics by kudos
Mostly my multi-chapter ones (which I guess only have that many because one of my regular readers is unregistered, and as a guest you can leave multiple kudos on the same fic, something I did before I made an account, too). Okay, lets see: 1. Like a lonely house 292 kudos 2. The Crystal Menace 266 kudos 3. Promise in the Dark 256 kudos 4. We go deeper than the ink beneath the skin of our tattoos 85 kudos 5. Stolen Moments 55 kudos
5. do you respond to comments?
Always, at least to thank the reader for reading and taking the time to write a comment. I love hearing what people think, especially with the multi-chapter stories, what they think is going to happen and all that. It might take me a few days to respond, but I wouldn't miss it.
6. what is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Hmmmm, probably The Crystal Menace because it's the first part of a series and has a rather heartbreaking ending (because it's not the actual end of their story). I generally tend to give my characters a happy ending because to me whump is only fun if it gets a happy ending.
7. what's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
As I said in 6, I usually give my stories a happy ending because while I love putting the characters through it, I need them to be safe in the end. I guess Like a lonely house has the happiest of them all, if I had to chose.
8. do you get hate on fics?
No, AO3 user are all lovely and I don't really remember how it was on the sites I used before (like ff.net), but I don't think I ever got hate there, I'm sure I would remember that.
9. do you write smut?
Oh yes, I love writing smut :) I even have a series that is only smut.
10. craziest crossover?
Hmmm, probably the Sailor Moon & Stargate crossover I wrote back when I was thirteen and that I never finished. I have never written a crossover since, at least not that I remember.
11. have you ever had a fic stolen?
not that I know of. But the only fics I have on AO3 are from such a small fandom that stealing would not be profitable.
12. have you ever had a fic translated?
I don't think so.
13. have you ever co-written a fic before?
Oh yes, that's how I started out writing fanfic. Always with one other person in an rpg-style (each had a main character and we planned the story together and shared side characters). I was the one with the crazy ideas and my writing partners mostly tuned them down and brought order to my chaos. I loved writing like that, sharing thoughts, having someone to discuss things, someone to give input on my ideas, to shape all the rough ideas into something better.
14. all time favorite ship?
Nope, not gonna chose. I am a multi-shipper and even if I have been writing dmbj-only for 3 three years, that doesn't mean anything.
15. what's a wip you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
Hmmmm, there is a Hei Xiazi/Zhang Rishan-idea in my drafts, but it's only an outline, it's not even really a WIP, so I don't know if it counts. And I still haven't given up hope that I will finish my Stranger Things WIPs one day^^°°°
16. what are your writing strengths?
erm.. I have been complimented on my smut, recently. Other than that, no idea. I'm not good at telling these things.
17. what are your writing weaknesses?
Knowing when to quit, probably? I hate having to let go of characters and finding a good ending for a story.
18. thoughts on dialogue in another language?
Full dialogue? I'd probably write that the character speaks in another language, depending on the POV character. In one older story I wrote with a partner we used ~ as a marker that certain dialogues were in another language because the reader was supposed to know what they were saying while one of the main characters wasn't. So I would write the dialogue in the language I'm writing in and then add a "said character in language" if the POV character understands that language and otherwise just mention that the other characters are talking a language MC can't understand.
19. first fandom you wrote in?
Stargate SG-1 and Sailor Moon if I remember correctly.
20. favorite fic you've written?
I love all my stories, but Like a lonely house will always have a special place in my heart because it was the first story I wrote all by myself and the first story I wrote when I started writing again after my dad died.

So I recently learned that Sha Hai was shot before Ultimate Note, which explains something I was a bit confused by when I first watched UN, namely why introduce this Zhang Rishan guy for like half a scene and then never mention him again?
That's because Sha Hai gave them no choice. They included Zhang Rishan, a character long dead by then in novel canon, so now UN was tasked with having to explain why'd he just let the Iron Triangle trash Crescent Hotel like that?
And honestly I think, knowing this, the way they handled this is just glorious.
It would have been so easy to mention off-hand how he's out of town. Out of the country even.
But nah. Zhang Rishan takes a look at the situation and decides that, nope, not his circus (...literally his circus tho), not his monkeys (one of them is literally a Zhang, and one he has an Awkward history with, so yes, his monkeys) and locks himself up in his study.
