When there's a little tuff of hair poking out from under the padded coif/space hood (I have a very specific character design element that tickles my brain)

Thin, pale, and clad all in dusty black, the Patrician always put Ridcully in mind of a predatory flamingo, if you could find a flamingo that was black and had the patience of a rock.

Back when S2 was airing, I read an interesting analysis of Ed's hair and how it represents Ed's mental state. When Ed wears his hair up (trying to make himself appear more together) it's an easy sign he's mentally falling apart. When Ed wears his hair down, he's more relaxed and/or being more honest with himself.
Tumblr media
Which is interesting! But I'd like to say that Stede has an equivalent: the less Stede is wearing, the more emotionally open and vulnerable he's being.
Wait, come back. Hear me out. I know we all love the stiddies. But have we considered the few times we've seen the stiddies? We see Stede full tits out three times (not counting when Izzy rips Stede's shirt, we'll talk about that later): when he talks to Ed for the first time, when he closes the curtains at the end of "Calypso's Birthday", and when Ed comes back with breakfast the morning after.
Tumblr media
Interestingly, when we see Stede shirtless at the end of "Calypso's Birthday", Ed has his hair down and he's taken off his jacket (for the last time until Episode 8). They're being vulnerable and human, shedding their personas. And Stede being shirtless is a nice callback to the last time they were in the window bed together, being vulnerable and (both metaphorically and literally) meeting each other without costumes.
That's not to say I think Stede's S1 wardrobe was purely "costume". Just that he needed to shed all that to meet Ed on neutral ground. The fancy man stripped of his fancy clothes and his markers of traditional upper class masculinity, injured and human. Simply a little guy. And Ed, whom Stede sees not as the man, the myth, the legend but simply as a human being performing a very human task (watching over his bedside).
Let's go back. To Stede's ripped shirt. To the first ever time we see the stiddies. To Izzy cutting Stede's shirt open.
Because you see. This is the moment of truth. When Izzy reveals this guy isn't a pirate, he's a sad hopeless damsel who thinks he's a man.
But. That's not what happens. Stede outwits Izzy. He's the romantic hero of the story. Izzy cuts away.a layer of Stede to reveal underneath a tougher shell than Izzy expected a fem queer man to have. Not in spite of Stede's queerness, but in tandem. He's both the Jane Austen heroine and the dashing romantic hero.
Stede's layers are cut away piece by piece, until we get here.
Tumblr media
A little bit of Ed (the single earring) and a little bit of Stede (the color blue) and a little bit showing more of himself (the slutty neckline).
